The Publisher Vance Leavy Being one of the last graduating classes at Georgia that was on the quarter system, it’s still a little strange to me that current students close out the school year in the beginning of May. I understand that’s how it has to be, but some of my fondest memories of student life were May trips to the shoals and lakes. Nonetheless in the coming days, another crop of fine youngsters will don their cap and gowns and receive their diploma from our awesome university. Some will quickly enter the world of full-time employment, while others will continue their education by entering graduate school. And there will surely be a host of folks who will choose to travel or perhaps live in a ski or beach town for a season or two. That’s the beauty of graduation as young adults set their course for the next journey. Yes it’s both thrilling and frightening all wrapped up in one. While I chose option number three after my own graduation, I certainly appreciate those folks who know they are ready to start their careers or those who have such a keen interest in their field to further the education of it. My only advice to the Class of 2010 is to know there are plenty of highs and lows coming your way in the future. Enjoy the good ones and learn and grow from the not so good ones. To my right, BI Athens’ editor Ryan Scates will receive his diploma in the coming days and I must say he will have earned it by not only completing his course requirements, but also doing many great things beyond the classroom. The joke among people my age and above is that the current students of UGA certainly make our proud piece of paper on the wall worth even more. And that’s certainly the case with Ryan and the eight people we have profiled on our center spread (pages 8, 9). Not only will Ryan begin law school at Georgia this fall, he also will be marrying his sweetheart, Kiel Zanone, in the near future. Anyone who knows Ryan realizes what an old soul he has, so marriage at the ripe age of 22 isn’t all that surprising. And while some cynics may scratch their heads at such a huge commitment, I encourage you to check out the photo from their recent engagement party on page 10. I’ll put my money that those googly eyes will stand the test of time. Just like the school year, the UGA sports scene is drawing to a close. However for those who call Athens home or those hanging out through the remainder of the month, attending the NCAA Tennis Tournament for both the men and women will certainly be worth your time beginning on the 18th. For details turn to page 12. And while 2010 has been tough for our Diamond Dawgs, there are a few remaining home stands to soak up some rays and America’s pastime. Thankfully as Jeff Dantzler reports on page 4, our boys made it home safely from the torrential weather in Nashville this past weekend. For now, we say congratulations and good luck to the University of Georgia Class of 2010. Much success in whatever your future holds and of course, GO DAWGS!

The EDITOR Ryan Scates For over 5,000 UGA students, that bittersweet moment is drawing near. No, not the end of $1 Budweiser Tuesdays on Clayton Street, although those will be missed dearly. And as nice as it is to say goodbye to the prospect of an 8:00 am class, that’s not what I’m talking about either. Around 7:30 pm on Saturday, May 8th, University President Michael Adams will confer degrees on over 5,000 of our state’s best and brightest. No doubt many of these new grads will head straight up the hill to North Campus, where they can finally walk through the Arch and into the real world, joining the ranks of countless others before them who can look back at America’s first state chartered university with a smile and think “remember when.” Sure, having a University degree is quite an achievement, but when you are studying in a setting as ideal as Athens, who really cares to graduate? In our graduation issue of BI Athens, we have profiled a handful of the University of Georgia’s class of 2010. To think, when these students were freshman they could go see a concert at the Georgia Theatre, hang out with Knowshon Moreno during his redshirt season, get their picture taken with Uga VI and go park their cars where the behemoth Tate Center Expansion now stands. For better or worse, this group of graduates has seen plenty of change on both local and national levels during their time at the University. If you are interested in attending commencement, head over to Sanford Stadium at 6:00 pm to see the traditional procession which is led by the Athens Chief of Police with his saber drawn to ward off the danger of Indian attack. In sports news, preparations are heating up for the NCAA Tennis Tournament. The tournament will be held May 18-31 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex here in Athens. After both men’s and women’s tennis teams were upset in their respective SEC tournaments, I’m counting on seeing the Dawgs come out swinging for the big dance on their home turf. We have included an unofficial spectator’s guide in this issue to get you all caught up on this year’s tournament, so get fired up and ready to bark the Dawgs to their third national title in the past four years! Well that about wraps it up for this Senior Bulldog. As nice as it is to write about the prospect of graduation, the reality of finals keeps getting in the way of any premature celebration. I hope you enjoy the last issue of BI Athens to be edited by an undergraduate, and I hope to see you at $1 Budweiser Tuesday very soon.

When you hear it’s tough on the road, believe it If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be a student – athlete - or to be associated with the team as part of the staff - for the University of Georgia on the road in the Southeastern Conference, it’s not all glamour. This could happen to you, because it did to us. Georgia’s baseball program has enjoyed unparalleled and incredible success under the watch of David Perno, highlighted by three trips to the College World Series, a pair of Southeastern Conference championships and five of the school’s 10 all-time NCAA tournament berths. But the Bulldogs are having a tough year. It happens in baseball. There are only 11.7 scholarships, the constant fight against the major league draft, an incredibly tough schedule, and this year, an inordinate number of injuries, beginning with the tragic life-altering accident suffered by the incredibly brave and courageous young freshman Chance Veazey – an unimaginable source of inspiration. While Georgia is in a rebuilding year, just two years removed from a spot in the College World Series Championship Series and a year away from being ranked No. 1 nationally for three weeks, the 2010 season is one that many of the Bulldogs chief rivals have been pointing to as a “can-do campaign. It’s been a perfect storm. And April was the absolute most brutal portion of a trying campaign. Of Georgia’s 19 games in the month, 17 came against teams ranked in the top 20 nationally. It was a difficult month. Then came May 1 in the Music City, as Georgia was set to play the second of a three game series with Vanderbilt. The forecast had not been looking good. Your fearless play-by-play announcer awoke to the Weather Channel, where the Interstate-40 corridor between Nashville and Memphis was listed as the worst weather area in the country. Following a quick workout and the normal morning routine of breakfast and solving all the problems of the world, we prepared for a delicious Italian pregame meal. The bus departed the hotel at 12:30 central time. We would return at 6:45. En route to Buca de Pepe, our bus driver was severely crossed up between the three Interstates of 24, 40 and 65, as well as the I-440 “loop connector. A 15 to 20 minute drive took an hour and 15 minutes. When lunch was done, we found ourselves trapped in the parking lot, as connecting roads were completely under water. Two people had to be pulled from their cars. We maneuvered around the lot looking for an escape route and discovered another dozen cars that were covered up to the windows. So we returned to the restaurant and watched tele-
vision with other stranded eaters. Nashville was in the midst of a record rainfall, a 100-year flood, and tornado watches and warnings. A portion of I-24 between the Music City and Chattanooga was completely washed over, and trapped 18wheelers were covered up to their roofs. Boats had to rescue drivers. We finally found an “escape route at 5:15 and made the getaway from the parking lot, where we found ourselves in another parking lot, also known as Interstate 65. What should have been a 20 minute drive took another hour and a half. A creek had risen so high on both sides of the interstate, that it was a mere foot away from overtaking the highway. First pitch was scheduled for 6:00. Vanderbilt coach Tim Corbin was insistent that there would be a break in the weather and that we’d be able to play. The Nashville Sounds minor league team cancelled their game. But with Georgia struggling, and the Commodores trying to post an over-.500 SEC record, the fact that floods had ravaged Nashville seemed to have no effect on the game. We arrived at the hotel at 6:45, and left to go to the stadium at 7:15. The mayor and emergency management agency urged all to stay home. Right before leaving, my buddy Chris Lakos, our sports information director, caught a tv report where two police officers, who were rescuing stranded drivers, had to be rescued from a tree. Five people died as a result of the storms and floods, including at least one stranded driver who drown in their car. We got to the stadium at 7:45 and started the game at 8:27 – 12 minutes later than Corbin had hoped. We played three and a half innings and the Bulldogs led 4-2 when heavy rains came again. It was back to the hotel, where we pulled in around 11:00, with tornado warnings in the area until 3:00 a.m. The forecast for Sunday looked awful. The week prior, it had rained hard in Athens and the forecast looked awful. The ultra – classy Perno, in conjunction with South Carolina coach Ray Tanner, decided to go ahead and rain the game out. We played a double header on Sunday and the Gamecock student – athletes didn’t have to spend an entire day in limbo. So as I sign off, I was hoping for a win and thankful for my Vanderbilt friends Joe Fisher and Thomas Samuel (our radio and SID counterparts), who gave us an alternate route to shoot past the flooded out portion of I-24 so that we might hopefully get back in a safe and timely fashion Sunday. Final exams started Monday. So when you hear that it’s tough on the road, believe it.

Lucky ones stay in Athens for summer Spring semester is already over? It is hard to believe that the 20092010 academic year is drawing to a close. As I cope with my own stress of finals and multiple project deadlines, I can not imagine what it would be like to add the pressures and stresses of also being an athlete on one of UGA’s teams. Our UGA Athletes have had an eventful past few weeks. Our men’s golf team just won the SEC tournament. The UGA Equestrian team won their third consecutive National Championship. The soccer team welcomed a new head coach. The Lady Bulldawgs Swimming and Diving team won the SEC Conference. There have also been multiple individual awards on all of Georgia’s varsity teams. Overall, the 2009-2010 academic year was a successful one for our student athletes. Even though most students are mentally checking-out after their last final exams and packing up their rooms, there is still a lot going on at UGA in the next few weeks. For sports, the men’s golf is moving on to the next step in their journey towards the National Championship Tournament. They qualified and will be participating in the NCAA Region Tournament at the end of May. The tennis teams will start the first round of the NCAA tournament in mid May. The baseball and softball teams are still in the midst of their seasons. Track and Field athletes have the Georgia Invitational meet and the
Meet Isreal machovec
SEC Championships coming up this month as well. Aside from the UGA athletic events that are still going on, summer in Athens has a lot to offer. While some students run off to their summer internships, foreign countries for study abroad programs, or head home for summer jobs, the lucky ones stay in Athens. It is hard to compare the summer I spent life guarding at my hometown pool, fishing out questionable items from the kiddy pool and telling ten year olds to stop running, to the summer weeks I have spent in Athen, but it is definitely something every student should try to experience. Athfest music festival, hanging out at the pool, taking classes; summertime in Athens is a different world than the intensity of fall semester that comes before you know it. Even though the thought of our first kickoff this September gives me goose bumps, I am excited about spending the little extra time I have this summer in Athens. Although I have to give up another wonderful summer babysitting 65 elementary school kids in the midst of a water-gun war fare, I am excited to hang out in Athens for a few weeks in the summer before making my way to my to Bristol for an internship with ESPN. Even though I will be up in Connecticut watching endless tapes of professional baseball and World Cup footage, my heart will still be in summertime Athens.
Major: Economics Year: Fourth year Hometown: Dacula Favorite part about being on the Track team: The coaches and my teammates. How hard is it to juggle school and being an athlete? It's very difficult but if you manage your time wisely it can be done. Favorite place to eat in Athens: Kelly's Jamaican Jerk What you miss most from home: my younger siblings and my mom’s cooking Favorite kind of music: Really into trance right now Best memory at UGA so far: Training in the summer after school is over and I just hang out with my roommates. Just lifting and throwing, it's the perfect life What you like to do in your free time: I like to watch tv. I don't like movies that much, just sitcoms mostly. If you could be on any reality tv show, which one would it be: Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew... just so I could punch Tom Sizemore in the throat.
