To have a great season, Georgia simply must win Saturday. The same went for Missouri. It likely won’t be easy. Vanderbilt won in Athens in 2006, nearly beat the 2007 Georgia team that finished No. 2 nationally and nearly beat the 2011 Georgia team that went to the SEC Championship Game. The Commodores are certainly improved under James Franklin’s watch, and the Bulldogs will have to play an excellent and sound game to win. But to be where Georgia wants to be, this is another that the Dogs have to have. Georgia can’t lose to Vanderbilt and expect to have a great season. Repeat the motto – “Our team. Our time. No regrets. That’s what the Bulldogs of 2012 are saying and that had better be taken to heart for a first – the Dogs and ‘Dores doing the gridiron dance at night between the hedges. It says a lot for the rapid advancement of the Vanderbilt program that they were picked to host South Carolina as the featured game to kick off the campaign the Thursday night before the Labor Day Weekend. It says a lot about Georgia that the Bulldogs are hosting Vanderbilt in a Saturday night primetime SEC showdown. Usually when these two meet, it’s a lock for 12:30, or the new 12:21 kickoff time. A night game should help Georgia’s players and fans get extra juiced. Let’s face it, although Vanderbilt has beaten the Bulldogs and come awfully close to doing it more than once in recent years, it’s still the Commodores. And as much as coaches preach to players that this is not their father’s Vanderbilt, the fact that Vandy has been around the bottom of the league on the gridiron for numerous decades makes it tough to fully grab the attention of players and the faithful throng clad in red and black. If Georgia can survive this one – as the Bulldogs did against Missouri – that would make it a perfect 4-0 with a couple of defensive stars returning. This is a critical stretch for the Dogs – Vanderbilt, Tennessee and then South Carolina on the road prior to an open date. We’ll know then if this has the chance to be a truly special season. This year is the 30th anniversary of one of Georgia’s signature wins over what was arguably the best Vanderbilt team of the Southeastern Conference era. The Commodores, led by star quarterback Whit Taylor, twice runner-up to Herschel Walker for SEC Player of the Year honors, posted an 8-3 regular season. Georgia went on to a perfect 11-0 regular season, capturing the SEC championship for a third consecutive campaign. Legendary Bulldog All-Americans – all three of whom would later be in-
ducted into the College Football Hall of Fame – led Georgia to a 27-13 victory over Vandy that beautiful October Saturday. Walker carried 38 times for 172 yards and a touchdown. Kevin Butler connected on a pair of field goals, including a critical kick that tied the game at 13-13 at the close of the third quarter. And Terry Hoage had one of his greatest games, intercepting a trio of Taylor aerials – the third that helped deliver the knockout blow prompting one of the Mighty Munson’s greatest calls - “all day long, Hoage, Hoage Hoage! The Georgia faithful breathed a huge collective sigh of relief when it was over. It was a memorable victory of the year and the series. The game was one of seven on the season that this great resilient Bulldog team trailed in, and then came back to win. Does the 2012 Bulldogs second win of the campaign spark some memories? Jarvis Jones had an incredible performance in Columbia that goes down with Hoage’s game against Vanderbilt in ’82 (as well as Bill Stanfill against Florida in ’66, Jake Scott at Kentucky in ’68, Freddie Gilbert against the Gators in ’83, Champ Bailey at Auburn in ’98, David Pollack vs. South Carolina in 2002, Thomas Davis against Alabama in ’03 and Jones’s own five sack showing a year ago in Jacksonville) as one of the great individual performances in Bulldog lore. Georgia showed great fight two weeks ago in Columbia, coming back from five deficits. And Georgia finished the game strong, scoring the final 24 points to win 41-20. It will take another performance like that for the Bulldogs to beat Vanderbilt. It will take a 60-minute performance akin to the Bulldogs final 16 minutes at Mizzou for the Dogs to put together a great season like the ’82 juggernaut. So the question is, can the Bulldogs do it consistently? Saturday night is a big test, the second tough opponent that Georgia has faced. That 60-minute game has two meanings – you have to finish strong, like the Bulldogs did at Missouri. You also have to put together a full 60-minute game, meaning start to finish, meaning the Dogs need not be sluggish out of the gate, as was the case at Mizzou. Should the Dogs survive Saturday, that defense figures to be at full strength, and it should be a ferocious and frightening stop unit. Walking the walk and letting the others talk and tweet, and staying focused on the upcoming Saturday will lead to an outstanding year – if Georgia adheres to the motto. Dogs-23, ‘Dores-18.

Rodney Bennett - From Big Orange to Red and Black Like a fellow member of the Board of Directors of the Georgia Athletic Association, Jere Morehead, Rodney Bennett also grew up in the shadow of one of the Bulldogs’ biggest rivals. But while Morehead was raised in the heart of Florida Gator country, Bennett’s young days were spent in the homeland of another shade of orange, that of the Tennessee Volunteers. Bennett, the University of Georgia’s VicePresident for Student Affairs, is a native of Knoxville who attended high school there before heading to Middle Tennessee State, where he earned both his undergraduate and master’s degrees, and then to Tennessee State University in Nashville, where he would earn his Doctor of Education degree. Bennett, in his high school days, was a pretty fair all-around athlete himself, competing in baseball, basketball and tennis, as well as running track for his prep team. “I came to Georgia in 2001 as dean of students,” related Bennett. “I came here from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina where I had also served as dean of students. So I started as dean of students at UGA and then I served for a year as the university’s chief diversity officer. The name of that job was Associate Provost for Institutional Diversity. And then, in 2004, I became vice-president for student affairs. Up until about two years ago,” Bennett said, “I did have the title of vice-president and dean of students but we were very fortunate to have been able to hire Bill McDonald to serve as the dean of students so now I’m just – I say just – the vice-president of student affairs.” In addition to his all-important role in presiding over the welfare of the university’s student body, Rodney Bennett is also a valuable member of the Georgia Athletic Board, working diligently with his cohorts to make the Bulldogs’ athletic program among the best in America. In this question-and-answer session with Bulldawg Ilustrated, Bennett talks more about his background and his role on the UGA athletic board. What is your occupation?
My job really involves oversight for the student life components at the University of Georgia, and of course there’s some functional areas that make up student life such as university housing and the university health center, Greek life and the Ramsey Center for recreational sports. All of that is part of the student life component so I have oversight for student affairs and student life but included in that are three or four very important functional areas that I spend a lot of my time on. One is budget planning and oversight for the division; the second one, and these are not in any particular order, is all of our HR (Human Resources)-related functions. We have more than 525 full-time employees from the division of student affairs and so the HR responsibilities go along with that. I also spend a good amount of my time on policy development and policy implementation for the units that report to me. And finally, I spend a good amount of my time in fund-raising. How many years have you served on the UGA athletic board?
I’m in my first term and each term I believe is three years so I must be maybe going into my last year of my first term. I’m an appointed faculty member, appointed by Dr. (Michael) Adams. I’m also a member of the executive committee of the athletic board. I’m just a regular executive board member; I’m not an officer of the executive group if you will. Where did you grow up and what made it special?
I grew up in Knoxville and I think the sense of community was really, really important and the sense of service within your community was really stressed and really important to the area that I grew up in but also to my family. And so, I sort of see service to the University of Georgia in this particular role as a member of the athletic board continuing the upbringing that I had … how do you give back, how do you serve the community that you’re in, and so on. What has been the most exciting part for you serving on UGA’s athletic board?
I think the most exciting thing for me in serving on the board has been the work we have done in integrating the student-athlete into the general UGA student body experience. I think that’s been very exciting for me because for a lot of athletes, especially Division I athletes, so much of their time is spent on their sport, in practice and in their classrooms, so they don’t really get to have a college experience like many kids across the country are able to have and I think we’ve been very intentional with how we can sort of

Rodney Bennett
normalize the college experience for our Division I athletes at UGA. And I think we’re starting to see real success with that. What has been the most exciting aspect of your career?
You know, in my line of work we sort of hold on to the delayed gratification of our work because we don’t always get to see the finished product and how our students turn out. They’re with us for four years or so and we hope they’ve taken advantage of all the programs and services and mentoring opportunities that have been made available to them and we hope that they sort of find their way in their careers and in their communities and within their families. But a lot of time that doesn’t happen until some years later so, for me, the most gratifying part of my work is when you get that unexpected email or unexpected letter or phone call from a former student thanking you for taking the extra time to invest in them or to help them work out something they were struggling with or to encourage them to apply for a leadership position or membership on a committee that they otherwise would not have really sought out. And that happens quite frequently. You might think that at a place like Georgia, you don’t ever really hear back from those students but this semester alone I’ve probably heard from four or five students, and it’s just early September, who have written to me to just thank me for helping show them the way while they were at UGA, and that’s very gratifying and I think it’s really what keeps us going. What do you think are the biggest challenges for Georgia athletics in the near future?
I think the biggest challenge for not only Georgia athletics but really all athletic programs is how to keep the focus on the student and how to find balance between the competing interests for what college athletics has sort of involved into … how we continue to focus on the student and ask ourselves what’s in the best interest of the student, No. 1, and then what’s in the best interest of the student-athlete, No. 2.
Crazy Good.
cooked slow... served fast These succulent new menu items are bathed in the tasty smoke of hickory wood for hours on end. Within minutes they are on your plate—sweet, juicy, and tender. Enjoy!
How has the knowledge from your occupation helped in the betterment of UGA athletics?
I think it’s the interpersonal skills we have to have in my line of work and working with students and parents and alumni and community members. I think the ability to really understand people, how to work with people, how to get along with people and how to communicate with people has really served me well in my role as a member of the athletic board. Your favorite UGA sports moment? Oh, my gosh, I’ve had so many! Wow! That’s tough for me to answer. I guess when I think about it, I just sort of think about the comprehensiveness of it all. I’m just always amazed and so much admire the commitment that our student-athletes make to be good students and good athletes and I don’t think that the readers of your publication can fully understand what these students are sacrificing, if you will, to be able to compete at this level. So I guess that would be my favorite moment if there’s any way I can tie that into the dedication and the support and love of their sport and the University of Georgia, that’s just pretty special to me. I just feel like I’ve been so blessed and so fortunate to be present at so many Georgia athletic events, it’s just so hard for me to pick one because they’ve all been so special to me.

Dogs vs. Dores Vandy arrives to Athens ready to settle a score from last year’s loss in Nashville By Travis Ragsdale
A
nother week and another win. Once again, it wasn’t pretty but a win is a win and wins build momentum. And with a a tough stretch of SEC games coming up, momentum is key to the Dawg’s success. But what will it take for this team to take care of business against Vanderbilt this week? A much, much cleaner game than fans have seen so far in the 2012 season. There were positives to take away from Florida Atlantic, though. 713 yards later, the Dawgs set a school record for total offense. Once again, the defense struggled in the first half but dominated in the second. Can the offense continue to produce? Can the defense string together a complete game? These are the tough questions that need to be answered before the Commodores come into town. “Pick your Poison”- Marlon Brown
Perhaps the best quote of the year by Marlon Brown. This came after the Missouri win and in reference to the expansive groups of wide receivers that the Dawgs have. He couldn’t be more right. For the third week in a row, Georgia had a different wide receiver gain over 100 yards through the air. First, it was Tavarres King, then it was Marlon Brown and this past week it was Michael Bennett. Fans can only hope this trend continues. Maybe it’s Chris Conley or Rantavious Wooten’s turn. Maybe it could be the tight end’s turn. Arthur Lynch had a great game. Sure, he isn’t Orson Charles but maybe because of that, he’s being underestimated by teams. This group of wideouts and tight ends that Aaron Murray has at his disposable may be the best group that Coach Richt has ever had while at Georgia. Each one brings something different to the table. Vandy’s secondary isn’t exactly the cream of the crop in the SEC so this would be the perfect opportunity for one of those five or six guys to have a bug break out game. Oh, and don’t forget about Malcolm Mitchell. Even if he’s just out there as a decoy, he’s still a dangerous weapon. As long as Aaron Murray can stay accurate with the long ball, the passing game should have great success on Saturday. Pick your poison indeed. First half defensive woes
It happened again. An inferior opponent was able to work their way down the field against the Dawg’s defense in the first half. It’s hard to explain this because it seems that as soon as the team comes out in the second half, the defense dominates. This trend has to stop and stop this week. Vandy’s offense with Jordan Rodgers at the helm can be dynamic in spurts. If the defense has a performance against Vandy like they did against Florida Atlantic, then get ready for about 24 points to be put on the board in the first half. The Dawgs have incredible capability on the defensive side of the ball, even with Ogletree and Rambo out. Having Sanders Commings and Chase Vasser back certainly helps out but the rest of the defense needs to step up this week as well. John Jenkins said after the game this weekend that he doesn’t know what is causing the defensive struggles. He also agreed and said that whatever it was, it needs to be fixed. It will help that Vandy will be visiting this weekend under the lights. With it being an SEC game, the crowd should be pretty juiced up and that always adds an element of swagger to a defense.
Photos by Rob Saye
The freshmen are feeling it
It’s really a lot of fun watching freshmen Keith Marshall and Todd Gurley. It was expected that these two guys would be good but maybe not this good. This past Saturday marked the first time since 2004 that two freshman running backs had over 100 yards rushing a piece. Gurley and Marshall have also become very dependable in pass protection, which is an integral part of the Mike Bobo offense. But can they keep it up? Neither of these guys has experienced a big hit from an SEC linebacker yet. Vandy’s Karl Butler is a rover and could be the guy to deliver that hit. But once again, momentum can’t be understated. They have tasted the success that goes along with being good college running backs and once you taste it, it’s hard to go back. Vandy’s run defense hasn’t exactly been stifling so far and they’ve yet to see a thunder and lightning combo like Gurley and Marshall just yet. Expect more big numbers from these phenomenal freshmen. Intangibles
This game is surprisingly a toss-up in the intangibles department. Sure, Georgia has a ton of momentum and it’s a night game at home. This would usually be enough to call this category in favor of the Dawgs but what happened last year is going to play a role Saturday. Georgia came into Vandy’s house and beat them in a tough game. Afterward, there was a bit of trash talking, right on the Commodore’s field. Players and fans didn’t take too kindly this. Now, it’s a safe bet that Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin has had this date circled on his calendar ever since. They would love nothing more than to knock Georgia out of the ranks of the nation’s best. But it’s going to take a lot more than emotion to kick this Dawgs team around. If the defense can come out firing on all cylinders then it’s “anchor’s down” for the Commodores, and not in a good way.

Scouting the ‘Dores By Murray Poole

Location: Nashville, TN
Joe Fisher, one of the best broadcasters in the country, does playby-play for Vanderbilt football, basketball and baseball. He’s one of the truly great guys in the SEC and once again takes the time to give us his insights into Saturday night’s game. Talk about the energy James Franklin has brought to the program? There is clearly a buzz around Vanderbilt football now. Despite the early losses this year, Coach Franklin has fans excited about what they are seeing on the field and in recruiting. I don’t think there’s any question that Coach Franklin’s presence sped up facility improvements here. We now have a new turf in the stadium, new jumbotron, new lighting, new meeting rooms and will break ground shortly on the multipurpose facility that will include an indoor practice field. What did it mean – even though it was a heartbreaking loss for the Commodores – to host the college football and SEC kickoff game with South Carolina? The atmosphere was electric; probably the most anticipation for a season opener here since Notre Dame visited to open the season in 1996. I think Vanderbilt fans also felt that the Commodores have earned enough national respect to be featured in a game like that. Where do you feel Vanderbilt has made the most progress over the last couple of years? I think the most noticeable difference in our product on the field is speed. I believe this year’s squad is the fastest, and likely most athletic, we’ve ever had. We have speed not only in the skill positions and in the secondary, but even on the defensive line. I think that’s an area where we have made great strides in catching up with the rest of the teams in the SEC. What are the team’s goals this season? The only goal this team ever talks about is winning the next game. I think fans believe that a great goal for this team is to reach a bowl game for a second consecutive year. That’s never happened here before and would certainly be a big boost.
Conference: SEC Enrollment: 12,859
What do you see as the goals for the program here in the near future? Ultimately Coach Franklin wants this program to compete for an SEC Championship. Obviously, that’s easier said than done, especially in the brutal SEC East. I think fans are hoping for a program that consistently reaches post season play, and competes on an even level with the powerhouse programs in the conference. What is your take on Georgia? I think Georgia is poised to have a great season. They have an excellent field general in Murray, and appear to have found the running back they were looking for in Gurley. Jones is a real impact player defensively, and it’s a team that doesn’t appear to make a lot of mistakes. Has having the Titans in town been a negative or positive for Vanderbilt football, or had no effect? I think the Titans in town has had an impact not just on Vanderbilt, but on every other college, professional, and even high school sports entity. It’s much more difficult to get a lot of media attention now with so much focus on the NFL, not to mention the impact on advertising dollars. Playing in the SEC and being a major university, we’ve been able to do fine, but it’s really had an impact on the much smaller colleges and universities in the area. One positive is that there are now pro scouts in our offices and at our practices almost every day. What does Vanderbilt need to do to win in Athens? First, we need a consistent performance from our offensive line to create the ability to run the football. That’s been a bit of a disappointment to this point. We cannot afford for Georgia to force us to become one dimensional offensively. Our team has not been very good in the red zone yet, and that’s got to change. When you get an opportunity to score against a quality opponent, you’ve got to take advantage of it. I’m looking forward to my first night game in Athens. Between the hedges and under the lights should be a great time.
Vanderbilt Commodores stars By Jeff Dantzler #87 Jordan Matthews, WR 6-3, 205 Jr. Madison, Ala. (Madison Academy)
#11 Jordan Rodgers, QB 6-1, 212 Sr. Chico, Cal. (Pleasant Valley H.S./Butte J.C.)
#2 Zac Stacy, RB 5-9, 210 Sr. Centreville, Ala. (Bibb Co. H.S.)
One of the elite receivers in the Southeastern Conference, Matthews burst onto the national stage with a tremendous performance in the Commodores tough-luck 17-13 season-opening loss to South Carolina in Nashville. Matthews burned the Gamecocks for 147 yards on eight receptions, including a 78-yard touchdown catch-andrun. This Biletnikoff Award candidate burst onto the scene midway through the 2011 season. He posted pedestrian numbers through the first five games of the year, but in Vanderbilt’s final eight games, Matthews hauled in 36 catches for 715 yards and five touchdowns. He had three 100 yard receiving games, topping the century mark against Arkansas, Florida and Kentucky – catching a touchdown as well against the Razorbacks, Gators and Wildcats. He is adding his name to the likes of Allama Matthews and Earl Bennett as all-time Vandy passcatchers.
In Georgia’s thrilling 33-28 victory at Vanderbilt a year ago, the Commodores offense made a huge jump once it turned to Rodgers as the team’s primary signal caller. An excellent thrower and runner, Rodgers has received plenty of attention for being the younger brother of one of the best players in the National Football League – Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers, 2011 NFL Most Valuable Player and Super Bowl XLV MVP. The nimble Rodgers is hitting right at 54 percent of his passes this year. With injuries plaguing standout tailback Zac Stacy, Rodgers has taken much more of the offensive burden. In the Commodores first two games against South Carolina and Northwestern , Rodgers led the team in carries. A year ago, Rodgers ran for 79 yards against Georgia. He accounted for four touchdowns – two passing and two running – in a heart-breaking loss to Arkansas. In a tough loss at Florida, Rodgers threw for 297 yards and a pair of scores. Rodgers and Stacy were a dynamic duo against Kentucky, combining for five TD’s, including a pair of scoring tosses from the Commodore signal caller.
One of the elite tailbacks in the Southeastern Conference, Stacy battled injuries through the first two games of the season, and that clearly slowed the Commodores offense. Well Stacy is healthy and was back in form in the Commodores rout of Presbyterian College. Stacy had a career-best 86-yard touchdown that sparked the ‘Dores and wound up with 174 yards on eight carries – a whopping average of 21.8 per pop. As a junior, he broke the school single season rushing record with 1,193 yards and set the Vanderbilt mark with 14 touchdowns on the ground. Stacy was the third leading rusher in the league, earning second team All-SEC honors. He averaged an extremely impressive 5.9 yards per carry. One of Stacy’s best games a year ago came in a rout of Ole Miss, as he carried 11 times for 169 yards, highlighted by a 77-yard scoring scamper. He was SEC Offensive Player of the Week for a 135-yard, three touchdown performance in a pounding of Kentucky. Stacy broke the team single season rushing record on the final day of the regular season with 184 yards at Wake Forest. Against Georgia a year ago, he had 97 yards on the ground and a touchdown. A hobbled Stacy was averaging just 3.2 yards per carry in Vanderbilt’s first two games against Division 1-A (FBS) competition.
Commodores in a thumbnail: After going 6-7 (2-6 SEC) including a 31-24 loss to Cincinnati in the Liberty Bowl, Vanderbilt began its second season under James Franklin this year by dropping a tough Thursday night season opener to South Carolina, by 1713. The Commodores then lost on the road at Northwestern, 23-13, before snapping back for their first 2012 victory, a 58-0 rout of Presbyterian this past Saturday. A look at the Vanderbilt offense: With eight offensive starters returning, Vanderbilt should have plenty of firepower on offense as the season moves along. In senior tailback Zac Stacy, the Commodores have an All-SEC performer who set a new school single-season rushing record last year by running for 1,193 yards and also a school record 14 rushing touchdowns. The 5-9, 210-pound Stacy, the SEC’s third-leading rusher in 2011, rambled for 174 yards on just eight carries including a school-record 86yard touchdown run in the pummeling of Presbyterian. Freshman Brian Kimbrow also topped the century mark, going for 137 yards on 14 carries. Senior quarterback Jordan Rodgers, who gave the Georgia defense plenty of trouble in the Bulldogs’ shaky 33-28 win over the Dores in Nashville last season, was benched in favor of Wyoming transfer Austyn Carta-Samuels in the Presbyterian game and the junior responded by completing 13-of-20 for 195 yards and a touchdown. The Commodores also have regained the services of former SEC Freshman of the Year Warren Norman, who sat out the 2011 season with a knee injury. A look at the Vanderbilt defense: Although the Commodores returned seven defensive starters from last year’s team, they did lose their leaders in tackles (Chris Marve), sacks (Tim Fugger) and interceptions (Casey Hayward). Still, the Vandy defensive unit has acquitted itself well in the three outings thus far, giving up just the 17 points to South Carolina, 23 in the loss to Northwestern and then the shutout against Presbyterian this past Saturday. Thus far, junior linebacker Chase Garnham and junior safeties Kenny Ladler (from Stone Mountain, Ga.) and Javon Marshall have been the Dores’ ringleaders on defense. What Commodores head coach James Franklin says: “This was a great win for us. We are 1-0 this week. We’re undefeated in the 2012 season that started today. (On whether Carta-Samuels or Rodgers will start against Georgia) We’ll see how this week goes. If after looking at the tape, if Austyn gives us a better chance to beat Georgia, then we’ll make that decision. Nothing is set in stone yet.” Game Prediction: What with their verbal confrontation after last season’s narrow Bulldog victory in Nashville, many have dubbed this game the Todd Grantham vs. James Franklin rematch instead of Georgia vs. Vanderbilt. But to those two coaches, that’s something that is ancient history and will have absolutely no bearing on this year’s game. It’s a big Southeastern Conference skirmish for both the Bulldogs and Commodores and that’s all Georgia’s defensive coordinator and Vandy’s head coach are concerned with at the moment. I called this one 28-17, Dogs, in my preseason forecast but now, I’m thinking this Georgia team will win a bit more convincingly, say by 31-14 Saturday evening.
Five keys for a Bulldog victory By Jeff Dantzler
1.
Big Push from the O-Line – Georgia’s offensive line has had it ups and downs so far this season. With players switching positions and true freshman John Theus in the starting lineup, there figured to be a learning curve for the unit. Now everything gets turned up a notch and the offensive line must continue to improve. In the first SEC game of the year against Missouri, there were too many breakdowns and penalties. But late in the contest, the unit was able to consistently get a good push. Georgia must success on the ground to beat Vanderbilt, and Todd Gurley and crew need for the big boys up front to give them plently of room to romp.
2.
D-Line Dominate and Contain Rodgers – In their season opener, the Commodores had a hard time consistently blocking South Carolina’s stellar defensive line. Georgia’s defensive front must take the fight to the Commodores in the same fashion. At the same time, as was the case against Missouri’s dual threat signal caller James Franklin, the Dogs must maintain their assignments and not get burned by the talented Jordan Rodgers on broken plays, or plays that spring out of the pocket. The new catchphrase for the NFL Talking Heads is called “set the edge.” Gotta do that Dawgs.
3. Slow Stacy – Zac Stacy has been one of the SEC best tailbacks the past couple of seasons – and that’s saying something in a league that has starred the likes of Trent Richardson and Marcus Lattimore. Stacy had a big game running against Georgia a year ago. If the Dogs don’t slow him down – and Stacy himself has been slowed by nagging injuries – that makes Rodgers, who is dangerous running and throwing, especially lethal. The Georgia defense must hit and wrap up Stacy. He is one tough back.
4.
Break Even (or better) on Special Teams – Georgia defeated Vanderbilt 33-28 last season despite a “Fminus” grade in the kicking game. The Commodores returned a kickoff for a touchdown, burned Georgia on a fake punt and blocked a punt in the closing seconds, with Drew Butler saving the game – and likely more – by making the stop. Georgia’s defense is better than Vanderbilt’s. The Bulldogs offense has a bit more firepower. So it’s up to the special teams to (at least) not cost the Dogs. It is early in the year, but the two big field goals at Missouri and Richard Samuel’s big stop on the fake punt, point to improvement in 2012. So far.
5.
No Catastrophic Turnovers – Along with special teams struggles a year ago, Georgia’s other self-inflicted wounds came from horrible turnovers – pick-six’s and fumble returns for touchdowns. The Dogs dodged a couple of bad turnovers at Mizzou, forcing a pair of field goal attempts, one of which was a miss. But it is dangerous to give the underdog great field position and extra possessions. To belabor the point, for the Bulldogs to ascend back to great from good, Georgia must first not beat itself.

Jeff Dantzler’s Top 25 This should be a great weekend on the gridiron. This past week, the best action happened at night, as Stanford, Florida, Texas and Utah all got big wins after the sun had gone down. The ACC has its biggest game in years. The SEC is clearly the best league, with the PAC-12 and Big XII both looking strong and deep as well. And then there is Notre Dame. The folks at 30 Rock are certainly smiling wth the Irish winning. 1. Alabama – You thought it would be bad. But did you think this bad? Alabama, defending national champions absolutely pounded Arkansas 52-0. The Crimson Tide have reloaded and, through three games, look comparable to last year’s BCS champions. 2. LSU – The Fightin’ Tigers continue to put up huge numbers. It was no problem in a 63-14 pounding of Idaho. LSU is hungry to jump into SEC play. Auburn has been struggling, and LSU has shown the ability to deliver that knockout blow. 3. Florida – The Gators make the biggest jump of any team. Florida has won back-to-back games at Texas A&M and Tennessee and that is strong. The victory over the Vols really stands out, because the Florida offense, which had struggled, showed big play capability on the ground and through the air. Kentucky is not good, so the Gators should make it an easy 3-0 in the league. 4. Stanford – Last year Stanford did it without Jim Harbaugh. This year, Stanford is doing it without Harbaugh and Andrew Luck. But that tough defense and running game is still there, and for the first time in history, the Cardinal have won four in a row over Southern Cal. 5. Oregon – The Ducks have played an easy schedule to date, but they’ve taken care of business. It looked like it was going to be Oregon easily in the PAC12 North, but Stanford’s win over Southern Cal. Chip Kelly has done an excellent job with the high powered Ducks offense. Here comes a big one with Arizona. 6. South Carolina – The Gamecocks were mighty impressive in a 49-6 win over UAB. That comes on the heels of a blowout of East Carolina. Steve Spurrier’s troops are putting up big numbers and gave no hope for any upset. South Carolina will try and make it 2-0 in the league, as Missouri makes the trip to Williams-Brice. 7. Clemson – Here comes Sammy Watkins and here come the Seminoles in this mega-showdown. Clemson’s offense is lights out, and now the defense will get a big test. Dabo Sweeney has the Orange and White faithful unseen since their glory days of the 1980’s and early ‘90’s. 8. Florida State – A team that had been a huge thorn in the Seminoles side – including a 30-0 win in Tallahassee in ’06 – Wake Forest got ambushed by Florida State 52-0 this past Saturday at Doak Campbell. Now comes Clemson in what is one of the biggest ACC games in a long, long time. 9. Oklahoma – It’s a mega-showdown in the Big XII, with the Sooners hosting Kansas State. The winner is arguably the front-runner for the conference title. The two head coaches Bob Stoops and Bill Snyder have won a bunch of games. 10. Kansas State – Bill Snyder has again rebuilt the Wildcats, it’s one of the great stories in college football. They have already crushed Miami and they would love to add Oklahoma’s scalp to the list. K-State has an explosive offense and will gve the sooners all they want. 11. Texas – I can imagine the scene in The Grove, with the Longhorns in town to battle Ole Miss. And Texas made a statement with a 66-31 victory. The Rebels couldn’t slow them down. The top of the Big XII is very strong and the ‘Horns are right in the thick of it. 12. Georgia – The gauntlet begins for the Dogs, as Vanderbilt comes to Athens for a Saturday night showdown. Georgia got off to a slow start against Florida Atlantic, but the offense really turned it on. Freshman tailback Todd Gurley could be elite. The defense is still shorthanded. Georgia needs to start stronger.
Kevin Butler’s Players of the Game
13. Notre Dame – Brian Kelly is a very good coach, and he has the Fightin’ Irish hitting stride. After a tight win over Purdue, Notre Dame had one of its biggest wins over the last few years, dominating Michigan State. It’s a tough schedule, but Irish eyes are smiling. Another big rival is coming. The Irish host Michigan Saturday night. 14. West Virginia – The Mountaineers play an old rival in Maryland Saturday afternoon. The heart of the Big XII schedule is on deck. Geno Smith is in the Heisman race. He puts up great numbers and the Mountaineers will have a chance for some high profile wins. 15. Southern Cal – The Trojans are hurting after Stanford took them down. It is the fourth straight time the Cardinal have beaten USC and five out of six. Lane Kiffen has an explosive offense, but they couldn’t handle Stanford’s defensive front. USC still controls its destiny in the PAC-12 South but this was humbling. 16. Mississippi State – Coming off that huge win over Auburn, the Maroon Bulldogs had a letdown and got scared by Troy. But Mississippi State pulled it out. It should be easy with South Alabama Saturday night. MSU has a shot at finishing third in the SEC West. 17. Arizona – Rich Rodriguez’s team gets a major test with Oregon. The Wildcats steamrolled South Carolina State 56-0 to tune up. They got that big win two weeks ago over Oklahoma State, so they are battle tested. 18. Ohio State – The Buckeyes squeaked by Cal 35-28. It will take Urban Meyer another year or so to really get Ohio State rolling. But, even though they are ineligible for the postseason, they could be the best team in the Big Ten right now. 19. TCU – The Horned Frogs took care of business against Kansas in their first game as a member of the Big XII. It’s back out of conference for Virginia, which got blasted by Tech this past Saturday. Gary Patterson just continues to win. 20. UCLA – Jim Mora has the Bruin faithful smiling brightly. Oregon State comes to town for a big PAC-12 showdown. UCLA has an explosive offense, and they certainly will figure in the PAC-12 race. It may not be a monopoly in Los Angeles anymore. 21. Oregon State – The Beavers have only played one game, as their opener at Nichols State got hurricaned out. But Oregon State got an impressive win over Wisconsin at home and now they go to UCLA. 22. Michigan State – The Spartans looked like the class of the Big Ten. Until last Saturday night. They were dominated by Notre Dame. Obviously it wasn’t a conference loss, but it was a confidence blow. 23. Louisville – Charley Strong’s team looks like the class of the Big East. The Cardinals have put together some nice wins, including this past Saturday against North Carolina. Louisville heads south to take on Florida International. 24. Tennessee – It was a disappointing night for the Volunteers against Florda. Tennessee led 20-13 in the third quarter, but then Florida took over. The Vols should have no problem with Akron, and then regroup for a big game at Georgia. 25. Michigan – The Wolverines destroyed Massachusetts to move to 2-1 on the year. After getting rocked by Bama and nipping Air Force, with Notre Dame on deck, the Wolverines needed an easy one.
Call Ahead for Large Orders
Kevin Butler, former University of Georgia legendary kicker and a member of the Georgia radio broadcast team, will each week during the 2012 football season select his offensive, defensive and special teams players of the week for Bulldawg Illustrated. Here are Butler’s selections and reasons why for the Bulldogs’ 56-20 win over Florida Atlantic. OFFENSE – Junior quarterback Aaron Murray, who completed 14of-19 passing attempts for a careerhigh 342 yards and two touchdowns and also tallied two touchdowns himself on a pair of quarterback sneaks. “Aaron was 14 of 19 and it was just a very sharp, consistent performance for Aaron,” said Butler. “He had great touch and he spread the ball around to eight different receivers. His ability to place the ball for the receivers gave them the ability to turn plus yardage after the catch. Their average of 25 yards per catch was a terrific game for Aaron to build his confidence going into the SEC schedule.” DEFENSE – Sophomore inside linebacker Amarlo Herrera, who had a 35-yard pass interception run for a touchdown and also recorded six solo tackles and one assist to help the Georgia defense shut out the Owls in the second half. “A tremendous big play on defense was turned in by Herrera,” said Butler. “In a linebacking core that has a lot of names Amarlo has given consistent play all season and will play a very big part in the success of our defense in the upcoming weeks.” SPECIAL TEAMS – Senior snapper Ty Frix, who continued to sparkle on special teams play in the Bulldogs’ romp over Florida Atlantic. “The captain of the specialty teams elected by his teammates, Ty just keeps performing with great consistency,” said Butler. “Since we have a freshman punter and freshman placekicker, the ability that
Ty has to make perfect snaps on both punts and placekicks relieves any worries or concerns the punter and placekicker would have. And he’s getting downfield covering the ball like a senior.” - Compiled by Murray Poole
