Athens
The Publisher Vance Leavy It’s hard to believe that our inaugural year of BI Athens is coming to an end. It seems like it was only yesterday when I dozed off that late evening having finally figured out how we could cover the other UGA sports. However the revelation was actually made in mid December when Cheri and I are normally enjoying some down time from producing weekly issues of BI during the football season. Imagine her surprise that next morning, when I told her the concept of BI Athens. And even more shocking, the realization that the first issue would need to debut in less than a month so that we could help promote the basketball programs of Andy Landers and new men’s coach, Mark Fox when spring semester began. I’ll give my wife credit. She didn’t throw anything at me or kill the lofty idea. Instead, we both came to the conclusion that the only way to produce 11 issues between January and early June was to have someone who would champion the new publication. Thankfully, we had a very dedicated UGA student in mind, who had been on the BI radar since he was freshman. Ryan Scates and I had probably one of the last lunches at the downtown Harry Bissetts to discuss what it would take to pull off the new publication. For him, he had to decide whether or not he could take on such an endeavor during his last undergrad semester at Georgia. Thankfully, Ryan accepted and BI Athens became a reality. And what an amazing run it has been. Cheri and I hope the coaches, athletes and most importantly the incredible fans that support all the UGA sports beyond the hedges have felt the love from our coverage in BI Athens. We’ve certainly not covered everything, but are hopeful that our sprinkles of information about almost a dozen sports programs have helped capture the vibe that each represents. It’s been incredible to experience the highs and lows of each sport. And how awesome is it that we get to wrap things up with the thrill of victory as UGA softball returns to the World Series and the awesome showing of both UGA tennis teams during the Nationals held the last two weeks in Athens. The tennis was phenomenal from the men’s team run to the final four at the beginning to Chelsey Gullickson’s impressive singles title to wrap things up with a bang. However I think what Cheri and I will cherish the most was the time spent with the 1985 national championship team and the realization of the passionate fan support of the entire tennis program. All of which is due in part to, as Jeff Dantzler says, “the Greatest Bulldog Ever” … Dan Magill. Coach Magill represents everything that anyone who loves Georgia should strive to be. For that reason, I asked several of his former players and JD to tell me the biggest trait they learned from the wise Magill. Their answers are a fitting end to what has been a great spring season of Georgia athletics. Because the qualities mentioned are what it takes to be a champion and more importantly a Georgia Bulldog. -

BEST OF BI ATHENs, YEAR ONe
The EDITOR Ryan Scates Here we are at Issue 11 of Bulldawg Illustrated Athens, and it’s only fitting that our coverage of UGA athletics ends on a high note. Watching sophomore sensation Chelsey Gullickson lay claim to the 2010 NCAA Women’s Singles Tennis Championship was a highlight of the semester. Although I imagine Chelsey would have taken the win in a less dramatic fashion, since her second set went into a tiebreaker her winning shot was the final stroke of the 2010 NCAA Tennis Championships. I don’t think anyone in Athens would have it any other way. And two days earlier on the other side of town, the Georgia softball team took the California Golden Bears to the woodshed, sweeping their rivals to the west to punch a ticket to the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. I am ashamed to say that the Super Regional was my first visit to the Georgia Sports Complex over on South Milledge Avenue. That softball stadium was rocking as the runs piled up on Saturday. Between Gullickson and the Georgia softball team, the Georgia women are stirring up some serious momentum as the Dawgs gear up for fall sports just three short months from now. It’s great to see the girls leading the way in terms of championships. Heck, just on Sunday acclaimed Georgia golfer Marta Silva Zamora won the Spanish Women’s Amateur Championship, and the women’s softball and track and field teams will be competing well into June. GATA girls! Also, the Diamond Dawgs won their first series of the year against Kentucky in the Dawgs’ home finale. It’s been a very difficult year for the baseball team on many levels, and to see this squad finish the year with their chin held high is a testament to that team’s character. Being the last issue of BI Athens for 2010, we have made sure to make issue 11 chock-full of photos and commentary recapping spring sports action. My favorite feature we have in this issue explains some of the best moments in putting the publication together over the past six months. I think my knees are still shaking from that trip to the rafters in Stegeman Coliseum back in February! Now, while this may be our last print edition of BI Athens, you can still stay on top of everything having to do with the Dawgs at our website, www.bulldawgillustrated.com. From there you can check out the Dawg Blog, look at expanded photo galleries, see special videos, read current and past issues of Bulldawg Illustrated, and follow our twitter feed. We hope to see you there! It’s been a great year, now to Golfer Russell Henley, the softball and track and field teams, FINISH THE DRILL! We are behind you all the way!

JefF DanTzler Gullickson caps Georgia fortnight, Perno’s Dogs Georgia’s men’s tennis team had an impressive run through the NCAA Championships, advancing to the national semifinals despite some serious attrition. With six national titles, 13 appearances in the final since 1985, and an astounding 25 Southeastern Conference crowns over the past 40 years, the Bulldogs boast a bulging trophy case. This overachieving team, brimming with heart and fire, put forth an amazing effort and made the 1985 national champs, celebrating this 25-year reunion, and Bulldogs everywhere exceptionally proud. This will certainly go down as one of the great Manuel Diaz’s favorite teams. No place hosts the NCAAs like Athens and the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, the tournament fathered by the greatest Bulldog ever. Highlighting the Georgia fortnight was Chelsea Gullickson. With a dominating run through the draw, the ace sophomore became the third Lady Bulldog player to win the national championship. Lisa Spain captured the crown in 1984 and Angela Lettiere won it in 1994. Gullickson is a prime example of Georgia’s unparalleled tennis legacy. As a nationally ranked junior player, Gullickson was coached at the United States Tennis Association level by former Georgia great Wade McGuire, one of the best college players ever. McGuire, the Richmond Rifle, was the national finalist in 1992 and 1993. He was the first player to make it to back-to-back finals since the great Mikael Pernfors, arguably the best player in college tennis history, won two straight national championships for Georgia in 1984 and 1985. Gullickson’s father Bill was a longtime major league baseball standout pitcher. She is one of several outstanding athletes from the family. That includes her brother Craig, who will be pitching for Georgia next season. He began his career at Clemson, and transferred to Georgia to play for David Perno and figures heavily in the mix for the Bulldogs rotation in 2011. Gullickson, who had to sit out and redshirt due to transfer rules, went 4-2 as a freshman, with one of the losses coming to the Bulldogs on Georgia’s magical run to the finals of the College World Series and Southeastern Conference championship. As a sophomore, Gullickson posted an Earned Run Average of 2.45. Georgia had an obviously disappointing campaign in 2010, but closed the season playing its best baseball. The Bulldogs won the final series of the season over Kentucky, and four of the last
five losses were painful ninth inning setbacks. With one of the youngest teams in the country, which had to forge through an unfathomable rash of injuries, picking up a wealth of experience, Georgia returns every position player and a handful of pitchers who will be in fierce competition with a talented group of newcomers, including Gullickson and fellow southpaw Alex Wood, the North Carolina state player of the year, who has made an early recovery from Tommy John surgery. Like every other team, the Bulldogs will hold their breath during the draft when it comes to potential incoming freshman. At the top of the list is highly touted hurler Drew Cisco, who is heavily in the Bulldogs plans of 2011. Georgia’s top returnees will be shortstop Kyle Farmer, who hit .340 as a freshman while playing outstanding defense, and lightning fast leftfielder Zach Cone, the Bulldogs leader in batting (.363), homers (10) and runs batted in (53). The Bulldogs had to play for a month before getting Farmer and second baseman Levi Hyams healthy together. They head towards 2011 as one of the SEC’s best middle infielders. Georgia is hopeful that third baseman Colby May, who had an injury plagued campaign filled with struggles, can return to his freshman form when he hit .339-11-42. John Hester, who led the state in home runs at Middle Georgia, can play any infield position and could start at first or third. Along with Cone in the outfireld, Georgia returns Johnathan Taylor, who closed strong, and Peter Virdin, who has a wealth of talent. Kevin Ruiz played outstanding down the stretch and he’ll be in the outfield and first base mix. Behind the plate Georgia brings in junior college standout Joey Delmonico, son of former Tennessee coach Rod Delmonico, and freshman Brandon Stephens, a slugger and dynamic pitcher for Lassiter High. Pitching will be the biggest question, but the Bulldogs have six signees (four of whom project to be drafted, keeping the Bulldogs fingers crossed) plus Gullickson and Wood joining a staff that includes some talented young arms. Perno has had enormous success at the Georgia helm, guiding the Bulldogs to three College World Series, two SEC championships and five of the program’s 10 all-time NCAA Tournament appearances. An intense competitor, Perno is anxious for Fall practice to begin so he can continue to mold a team that has promising prospects for 2011.

Gullickson wins singles title, men have great run on historic anniversary
NCAA Tennis Finals
Athens is a place of almost religious reverence for the college tennis world, and when the premier event in the sport comes “home” to the Dan Magill Tennis Complex expectations are set high. The 2010 NCAA Championships did not disappoint, with hard fought battles raging on all courts in the late May heat. Bulldawg Illustrated was there for it all, and if you couldn’t make it to South Campus for the championships, here is the best of what you missed. GULLICKSON WINS WOMEN’S SINGLES TITLE IN STRAIGHT SETS
Asst. Coach Frank Polito, Chelsey Gullickson, Head Coach Jeff Wallace
To the tune of 6-3, 7-6, UGA Sophomore Chelsey Gullickson gutted California’s Jana Juricova to claim the NCAA Women’s Singles Title in front of a home crowd. Gullickson joins former Dawgs Lisa Spain (1984) and Angela Lettiere (1994) as an NCAA women’s singles champion. GULLICKSON UPSETS #1 FALCONI After dropping two regular season matches to Georgia Tech’s Irina Falconi, Chelsey Gullickson upset the nation’s #1 ranked player in the quarterfinal round of the singles tournament. “It was very exciting to get a big win in front of our fans. It was great to have them behind me.” Said Chelsea.
DAN MAGILL HOLDS COURT In 90-degree heat, legendary Georgia tennis coach Dan Magill walked down from his seat to tell the Court 4 referee to move the scoreboard so spectators on both sides could see it. MEN’S TEAM HAS AWESOME RUN On the exact day 25 years after the Men’s tennis team won their first national title, Manny Diaz’ current squad upset Florida with a thrilling 4-2 victory. With the victory, the Dawgs remain unbeaten (3-0) against the Gators in Nationals competition. The team then whipped Oklahoma to advance to the final four before falling to eventual runner-up Tennesssee. 25th ANNIVERSARY TEAM REUNION Former men’s players, Mikael Pernfors, George Bezecny, Allen Miller and Deane Frey convened in Athens to commemorate their national championship win in 1985. The gathering was highlighted by a ton of homage being paid to their mentor and coach Dan Magill. And Pernfors shedding tears when talking about his children’s first visit to the UGA bookstore. DOUBLES DUO MAKES IT TO SEMIS
JAVIER GARRAPIZ TAKES DOWN #1 MEN’S PLAYER JP SMITH In the Final Four men’s team match, Spaniard Javier Garapiz defeated #1 ranked player JP Smith of Tennessee to win Georgia’s first point of the night. Javier Garrapiz elevated his play throughout the NCAA tournament including beating Tennessee’s number one in straight sets.

BEST OF BI Athens
Editor, Ryan Scates reflects on most memorable moments Issue 11 marks the end of the first year of Bulldawg Illustrated Athens run. It has been a wild ride and a great experience to help put together the publication every other week during spring semester. Of course, covering all of the spring sports from basketball to tennis has taken us to some cool and unexpected places. We have compiled a list of the best moments that went into making BI Athens in 2010.
Hanging from the Rafters at Stegeman
Time spent with Dan Magill
For a lowly college senior doing his best to cover the Dawgs, UGA Sports Information Director Claude Felton is an intimidating guy. So you can imagine how it took all the nerve I had to go and ask him if I could take some photos from the rafters above the court at Stegeman Coliseum. The “Claude-father” reluctantly agreed to let me go up to the rafters for one half of one game, so long as he was aware ahead of time so he could let the Fire Marshall know I was up there. We agreed on the South Carolina game and got some great shots from above the court. It was a great experience and I owe a big thanks to Mr. Felton for trusting me to take those photos!
In Athens, Dan Magill is one of those names that ring as heavy as Vince Dooley, Larry Munson or Herschel Walker. You don’t have to know everything about the man to know that he is an Athens institution, so I was pretty surprised when I walked into the ITA Hall of Fame and he took me around for a personal tour. Coach Magill was sharp, gracious, and knew more about tennis than I ever knew there was to know about tennis. But perhaps the best part of the afternoon was when he started telling Lewis Grizzard stories. I am a big sucker for anything Grizzard, so hearing about the man first-hand from Magill was quite a treat.
Men’s Hoops Beats Tennessee
The SEC Golf Championships
In my four years at Georgia, no non-football regular season event has had a “football-like” atmosphere like this game did. Georgia had yet to win an SEC game, but the student body and Athens showed up in force when Tennessee came to the Stegosaurus. Tennessee was heavily favored and had just knocked off top-ranked Kansas in Knoxville, but on this day Mark Fox let the Hoop Dawgs off the leash. Perhaps the defining moment of the very young Mark Fox era came on Travis Leslie’s breakaway windmill dunk. That jam told Tennessee and the rest of the SEC that Georgia Hoops is back.
Like many of our readers, I consider myself to be a “golfer”, but what made this event so special had little to do with actual sporting event. Using the SEC Golf Championships at Sea Island as a decoy, I plotted with BI publishers Vance and Cheri Leavy a way to propose to my longtime girlfriend. On Friday night she said yes at the Beach Club and then Saturday we all went and watched the Dawgs tear up the competition at the Seaside course at the Lodge. It was an incredible weekend and Vance and Cheri provided some memories that will last a lifetime. Oh yeah, and Georgia won the golf tournament too. Photos by Ryan Scates

personal... “Totally unexpected is the only way I can describe it. I was used to the ‘big bank’, used to being an account and only recognized with proper identification. Then I switched to First American. They said they were different and I said, ‘of course you are’. Now I’m a homeowner, expanding my business to a new location, and ‘they’ know me by my first name. Georgia’s “Mr. Basketball” signs to play for the Hoop Dawgs
June 3, 2010
Tech coach Paul Hewitt has been quoted as saying the 2010-2011 UGA-GT Basketball game will be played December 7, 2010. While no contract has been signed, the date change reflects an effort to coordinate the game with each respective school’s academic year. The game is currently played while students are on Christmas break.

What to do in Athens this Summer if you are a Bulldog
Since the NCAA Championships have come to a close, Georgia will not be competing in Athens until the football squad squares off against Louisiana-Lafayette on September 4th. No worries though, BI has got you covered with plenty to get into until it’s time to bark between the hedges once again. 1. Get to AthFest. An Athens summer staple, don’t miss this year’s edition of AthFest, a music and arts festival that runs at various downtown venues from June 23-27. Some bands highlighting this year’s lineup include Bubba Sparxx, The Modern Skirts, and The Kinchafoonee Cowboys. 2. Cheer on Softball and Track and Field. With the Dawgs’ Softball team headed to the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City and the Track and Field teams headed to the NCAA Championship, local Dawg fans will have plenty to pull for well into the month of June. Track the latest on these teams at georgiadogs.com and bulldawgillustrated.com 3. Visit Terrapin. Perhaps one of the best-kept secrets in Athens, local Brewery Terrapin is open to the public for tours and tastings every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 5:30 - 7:30. Educational tours run at 6:00, 6:30 and 7:00. Terrapin also features live music, and a portion of every ticket sale goes to support local charities 4. Greater Atlanta Bulldog Club Meeting 2N VR WKLV RQH LV QRW LQ $WKHQV SHU VH EXW LV WKH EHVW ZD\ WR JHW \RXU *HRUJLD VSRUWV ÀOO EHWZHHQ QRZ DQG 6HSWHPEHU WK 2Q -XO\ WK Damon Evans and Coach Richt will sit down and take questions from Dawg fans and give a preview of this year’s football squad. The event takes place at the Cobb Galleria Centre at 7.00 pm and is free and open to the public. 5. Eat Out! If I have heard it once, I have heard it a thousand times, going downtown to eat on the weekend can be very crowded. But, with over 70% of the UGA student body away for the summer, there is no better time to go enjoy downtown Athens than the summer months. So get outside, enjoy the nice weather and short lines and soak up the nation’s best college town. (minus the students, of course) 6. Check Out The Melting Point Since the Georgia Theater is out of order for summer 2010, head over to the Melting Point at the Foundry Inn and Spa for some of the best live music in town. Concertgoers can dance in front of the stage, sit up on the balcony, or lounge outside on their huge patio. On Tuesdays you can count on great bluegrass and cheap beer as well, and if you are lucky you may catch a member of the BI team playing the washboard between sets. 7. Visit BulldawgIllustrated.com I would be remiss if I didn’t encourage you to stop by BulldawgIllustrated.com for the latest and greatest in social media. Follow us on twitter, join our facebook group, check out the videos on YouTube and see what everyone is up to in our online photo galleries. Of course, Dantzler, Andrew, Murray, Vance and Ryan will be chiming in on the blog with what’s going on with Summer Camp and plenty of preseason prognostication with Cheri putting up current editions and bulldog lifestyle blurbs.
