From the editor : vance leavy Well here we are again, another trip to Jacksonville beckons for our boys in Red and Black. But before we go down that (often, dark) road, first I must give credit to this Georgia team for showing up in Lexington ready to play this past Saturday. Without question, a spark has ignited in this team where they are the aggressor and not surprisingly a barrage of points and big plays have followed. To this point, 2010 has been a story of two separate seasons for Coach Richt and his squad. The first part was very messy dropping games to teams that the Bulldog Nation could never imagine possible. Arkansas, Mississippi State and Colorado aren’t supposed to beat Georgia, but the reality is that it most definitely did occur including another defeat on the road to South Carolina that while crushing wasn’t so shocking. Thankfully for all involved the Georgia players finally found some rhythm on both sides of the ball and have struck back the last three games scoring 40 plus points against Tennessee, Vandy and now Kentucky. Now let’s all be truthful and admit that the Vols, ‘Dores and Cats were very sloppy with handling the football, which gave Georgia many opportunities. However don’t discount our boys either because not only did they take those opportunities, they pounced with an aggression that has been sorely absent over the last few seasons. Against the Wildcats in Lexington, each time Kentucky made a mistake, Georgia made them pay and built a lead that the home team could never

erase. And wow, how awesome was it to see Washaun Ealey run with such passion throughout Saturday night’s game. And as has become the norm, #8 A.J. Green continues to be a beast that needs to be continually served the ball. And Georgia’s dynamic young quarterback, Aaron Murray, continues to show the poise of an seasoned, upper classmen. While things hit on all cylinders for the Dawgs’ offense, our defense continues to have a few kinks in its armor. Most notably, third down continues to plague Todd Grantham’s crew. And most of those conversions have come at the expense of Georgia’s secondary. It should be interesting to see if the defensive coaching staff makes a few line-up changes for Saturday’s battle against our old friends, the Florida Gators. Oops, I just had to go and mention them, but , you know what, now is the time for everyone in the Bulldog Nation, from the fans to players to the coaches to put Urban Meyer and company in their sights. As Jeff Dantzler says on page 4, this year’s game against the Gators is one that we don’t just need, it’s one we’ve gotta have. Just in case, folks don’t know the reason for this, we’ve reminded them on this issue’s cover. I could go back over the last 20 years to further drive this point across, but instead I decided to remind everyone who loves Georgia just how bad the last two games in Jacksonville have been. Florida – 90 points …. Georgia 27 points Doesn’t that just make you want to barf? And I won’t even expound on Urban’s smirk. But Saturday’s game now offers our team the ability to strike back in a big way and send a message to Gainesville. JD is dead-on when he says this is a program game of huge proportions. Much like our Dawgs, the Gators are suffering through one of their worst seasons in decades,

which is why Coach Richt must have his boys in attack mode from the opening kickoff. With Florida having an open date last week, this challenge will be even harder, but for the good of the University of Georgia football program this a year where the Gators must go down. Here at Bulldawg Illustrated, we feel like we have done our part with this Georgia-Florida issue. With great commentary and action photos from our staff and awesome fan photos from the victorious road trip to Lexington, this issue should have the Bulldog Nation fired up when the football first sails through the air along the St. Johns River on Saturday. Speaking of our fans, huge kudos to everyone who made the trip to Kentucky. The Georgia G was well represented at Keeneland and in Commonwealth Stadium. And what a blast it was to celebrate with the players after the game with the Redcoats blasting Bulldog anthems into the night. Let’s keep this momentum rolling, there’s plenty of motivation to hit Florida in the mouth. Now’s let’s go do it! Before I wrap this sucker up, please be sure to also check out our center spread in this issue. My wife, Cheri, has provided a unique guide for folks heading to our hometown, the Golden Isles, this week. I know I can speak for everyone in the community in welcoming and also thanking the thousands of folks who will be arriving very soon. However with that being said, I also want to encourage everyone to do their part in keeping the Golden Isles golden. Particularly, the many of the Georgia students who will be hitting the beach for some good times with one another. Whoop it up and have a great time, but clean up after yourselves. Enough lecturing from this old guy, now let’s all band together and put it to those Reptiles! Go Dawgs!

Don’t just need it, gotta have it! This is a game that the Georgia program desperately needs. Two proud and storied programs, Georgia and Florida, are both in the midst of disappointing seasons. Whereas at least of these schools, and usually both, have been highly ranked headed into the annual Jacksonville showdown, the Bulldogs and Gators find themselves in the middle of a muddled Southeastern Conference pack here in 2010. While on a historical scale, the games of 2002, 2003 and 2005 carried much more relevance for the Bulldogs, who were squarely in the national championship picture during those seasons, this is one of those “program games that carries importance for the Bulldogs. There’s no championship, top 10 pot of gold and dream season for the Dogs or Gators in 2010, but Georgia desperately needs a win. “Don’t just need it, gotta have it. One of the most embarrassing records in Georgia history is the Bulldogs 3-17 mark against the Gators in the 1990’s and 2000’s. From 1990-1995, Steve Spurrier coached at Florida and Ray Goff was the coach at Georgia. The following season, Jim Donnan took over the Bulldogs program and Florida won the national title. Of those seven Florida triumphs, five came by at least 28 points. Behind a four-touchdown performance from Robert Edwards, Donnan’s Dogs roared to a 37-17 victory over Spurrier’s Gators en route to a 10-2 top ten campaign in 1997. From that point on through 2008, Georgia’s talent level was back on par with Florida’s. The Bulldogs were as good as the Gators in every year except 2006, and Georgia was better in several seasons. But only two more wins over the Gators would follow, as Mark Richt’s Bulldogs defeated Ron Zook’s Gators 31-24 in 2004 and Urban Meyer’s Florida team 42-30 in 2007 behind a dynamic 188yard, three touchdown showing from Knowshon Moreno. And that’s been it. Particularly painful were the losses of ’02, ’03 and ’05. In 2002, the Bulldog were undefeated and ranked fifth nationally headed to Jacksonville. Missed opportunities galore led to one of the most devastating losses in program history, as unranked Florida prevailed 20-13. That would be the lone blemish of a sensational season for the Bulldogs, who won the SEC Championship, finished 13-1, ranked No. 3 nationally. Had the Bulldogs beaten the Gators and won out (you never know if history would have played out differently), Georgia very likely would have played for the national championship. One year later once-beaten Georgia went to Jacksonville ranked fourth, while Florida was No. 23. Missed opportunities and red zone failings struck again, as the Gators won 16-13. The Bulldogs would close out the season with wins over Auburn and Tech, and Georgia wrapped the regular season at 10-2. Had the Bulldogs beaten Florida, Georgia would have headed to the SEC Championship Game with a shot at playing for the national title. LSU went on to beat the Bulldogs in Atlanta and the Tigers got the crack at the BCS Championship, which they won in New Orleans over Oklahoma.

What also stung about those losses is that Florida was coached, not by Steve Spurrier, not by Urban Meyer, but by Ron Zook. The Bulldogs had better players and the better coach and still lost. And with those losses, the Bulldogs lost out on national championship dreams. Zook was fired the week of the Georgia game in 2004 after the Gators lost to Mississippi State. Georgia responded with a 31-24 victory over the Gators. In 2005, Georgia was primed for a second straight win over the Gators. But the week before, Georgia’s star quarterback D.J. Shockley, the SEC’s offensive player of the year, injured his knee in a hardfought win over Arkansas. The Bulldogs were undefeated and ranked fourth nationally. Joe Tereshinski III, part of one of the great families in Georgia history, took over behind center and played well. But some missed opportunities yet again proved mighty costly and Florida won 14-10, handing Georgia its first loss of the season. What is so bizarre about those three Georgia losses is that those are the three seasons in which the Bulldogs made it to the Southeastern Conference Championship Game. What might have been. Over the last two seasons, Florida has dominated the Bulldogs 49-10 and 41-17. But those extremely talented Gator squads, both of which posted 13-1 records, finishing No. 1 and No. 3 nationally, have lost a great deal of firepower to the NFL. Florida had seven players picked in the first three rounds of this April’s NFL Draft. The Gators had seven players picked before the first Bulldog went in the draft. That includes Tim Tebow, the best player in Gator history and the most accomplished signal caller in Southeastern Conference annals. The Gators are vulnerable. This is a big opportunity for Georgia. This is a program game. For a non championship, top ten caliber season, or a campaign in which Georgia contended for a great year (so not counting years like 1966, 1968, 1980-83, 1997, 2002-2005, 2007, etc.), what is nationally the most insignificant Jacksonville game in at least 21 years is the Bulldogs most important since the 1957 drought-breaking victory over Tech. Georgia had lost eight in a row to the Yellow Jackets from 1949-56, the most infamous streak in Bulldog annals. But “Thunderin’ Theron Sapp crashed through and scored the lone touchdown of the game in a 70 Bulldog victory. Sapp’s jersey was retired, and that win over the Yellow Jackets started a four-game Georgia winning streak in the series. This 3-17 record against Florida the last two decades is right there with the drought as the ugliest rivalry records in Georgia’s proud and storied history. Clearly this is not a memorable season for the Bulldogs or Gators, but for Georgia this means so much. It’s a new decade and a shot at a new start for this series. Georgia is the hotter team. Florida lost a lot more talent than Georgia did. It’s there for the taking. A win would be akin to the droughtbreaker. For the Bulldogs, “don’t just need it, gotta have it.

Five best Dog wins over the Gators As is being thoroughly detailed this week, the 89th meeting of the Georgia Bulldogs and Florida Gators Saturday at the newly-named EverBank Field in Jacksonville is like no other Georgia-Florida clash in the past 30 years or so. That’s because, for the first time since 1979, both teams are entering the game unranked in the national polls. As Georgia fans know, these 2010 Bulldogs started the season on a disastrous note as, after dispatching little Louisiana-Lafayette with ease in the opening game, they accomplished a negative record in the Mark Richt era by dropping four straight games to South Carolina, Arkansas, Mississippi State and Colorado. And although Georgia has bounced back strongly with consecutive wins over Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Kentucky to be able to carry a 4-4 season record and 3-3 SEC mark into Saturday’s game, this is hardly the season the Bulldog Nation was expecting back in preseason speculation. And as for the Gators, they are entering Saturday’s battle on the banks of the St. Johns River saddled with a rare three-game losing streak. At 4-3 overall and 2-3 in the conference coming off this past weekend’s open date, Florida’s performance has so baffled its supporters that one zany Gator fan even put up a FireUrbanMeyer.com site. But the shaky season records to date aside, folks, this is still the Georgia Bulldogs vs. the Florida Gators. It’s still one of the greatest and long-time rivalries in all of college football, one that is played at a neutral site (just like Texas-Oklahoma) where there are 42,000 or so fans wearing red and black and the other 42,000 wearing orange and blue. And it’s still a football game where the unpredictable happens more often than not … no matter if each team is 8-0 coming in or each team is 1-7 coming in. And what great thrills these two teams have provided us down through the decades. With Saturday’s contest being the 49th consecutive Georgia-Florida game I’ve been fortunate enough to attend, I have great memories of nearly every one of these Bulldog-Gator clashes that started for me in the fall of 1962 when I was a student at UGA. And, on numerous occasions, because of my longevity with this particular football game, I’ve been asked which are the all-time best Georgia-Florida battles (that the Bulldogs won) I’ve been privileged to witness? Of course, I think everybody knows which one I would place at the top of the list. Yes, it’s the historic 1980 Belue-to-Scott game, the win that propelled Georgia on to its only unanimous national championship. But then, the magnitude of that great game has sometimes overshadowed many other tremendous Bulldog victories in this storied series. And, today, I offer my take on my five favorite Georgia victories over the hated Gators that will always remain imbedded in the minds and hearts of Bulldog fans everywhere. 1966 – Georgia 27, Florida 10

The Gators came into this game ranked in the Top 10 and riding high and their quarterback, Steve Spurrier, was on his way to the Heisman Trophy. Although Spurrier led Florida to a 10-3 halftime lead, Georgia would come back to chalk up 24 unanswered points in the second half. With Georgia safety Lynn Hughes scoring on a 50-yard interception return to give the Bulldogs the lead for good and senior tackle George Patton and sophomore tackle Bill Stanfill making life absolutely miserable for Spurrier and the Florida offense in the second half, the Bulldogs surged on to one of their best all-time victories against Florida and it was a defeat that Spurrier was said to never forget as he got revenge on Georgia as a coach in the 1990s. 1975 – Georgia 10, Florida 7

Although I was well into my sports writing career and covering Georgia as sports editor of The Brunswick News at this time, I remember sitting in the west stands of the Gator Bowl with my wife for this 1975 UGAUF meeting. This one turned into a monumental defensive struggle as the again heavily-favored Gators led the Bulldogs 7-3 most of the contest with only Erk Russell’s Junkyard Dog defense keeping Georgia in the ballgame. But after the Gators punted the Bulldogs back at the Georgia 20, then came the play that will always rank as one of the most notable in UGA history. Quarterback Matt

Robinson handed to tight end Richard Appleby on a reverse and Appleby then pulled up and hurled an 80-yard touchdown bomb to mercurial Gene Washington who went the distance to give the Bulldogs a scintillating 10-7 victory and making for another gem of a call from Larry Munson: “Washington thinking of the Montreal Olympics ran out of his shoes, 80 yards! The girders (of old Gator Bowl) are bending now!”

1976 – Georgia 41, Florida 27

Just like the 1966 comeback victory, this was also a second-half Bulldog rally for the ages. Trailing the Gators 27-13 at the halftime break, eventual SEC Player of the Year Ray Goff sparked the Bulldogs to 28 unanswered points in the final two quarters while accounting for five touchdowns on the day. This was, of course, the game that will always be remembered in Florida lore as “Fourth-and-Dumb” as Doug Dickey opted to go for it on fourth and less than a yard deep in Gator territory only to see Georgia defensive back Johnny Henderson smash Florida’s Earl Carr behind the line. The Bulldogs took over at the Gator 28, scored and went on to complete the huge victory. 1980 – Georgia 26, Florida 21

Of course, the greatest maybe of all-time Georgia victory as, without this glorious win, the Bulldogs would never have made it to the national championship game against Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl and posted their perfect 12-0 finish. Early in the game, the Bulldogs’ fabulous freshman tailback, Herschel Walker, bolted 72 yards for a touchdown to get Georgia off and running. But the Gators roared back to take a 21-20 lead late in the game and with less than two minutes remaining had Georgia backed up at its own 7-yard line. As I’ve noted before, I was on the verge of taking the elevator in the Gator Bowl pressbox down to what surely would be a somber Bulldogs’ locker room scene. But, for some reason, I concluded that I would watch one more futile Georgia play before doing so. And then, there it came, Buck Belue throwing to Lindsay Scott on a crossing pattern, Scott streaking to the left sidelines in front of the Georgia bench and outrunning the Florida secondary the 93 yards into the southeast corner end zone where he was mobbed by both teammates and the Georgia fans that were on the sidelines. The play remains arguably the biggest in Bulldog history and prompted one of the greatest calls ever by a Georgia play-by-play man, Larry Munson’s “Run, Lindsay, Run.” And this historic moment has been documented superbly in Robbie Burns’ new book that came out this fall, “Belue To Scott!”

2007 – Georgia 42, Florida 30

Keeping this to just five of my best Bulldog wins over the Gators, it was most difficult to bypass Georgia’s identical 26-21 win over Florida in 1981 when Walker carried the ball on almost every play in the Bulldogs’ gamewinning 95-yard drive as well as Georgia’s 109 1983 win when John Lastinger led a 99-yard drive to nip the Gators. And then how about the 1985 game when Georgia stunned the No. 1-ranked Gators 24-3 behind two backs named Tim Worley and Keith Henderson and the 1997 game when Jim Donnan’s Dogs rocked Florida 37-17 behind the play of Robert Edwards, Hines Ward and Mike Bobo and braked a seven- game losing skid against Spurrier’s Gators. And, heck, I could even go back to the 1968 game when Mike Cavan threw the ball brilliantly in the rain as Georgia routed Florida, 51-0. All of these Bulldog wins deserve to rank with Georgia’s best ever in old Jacksonville. But in my No. 5 spot, I’ve got to go with the Bulldogs’ 42-30 pounding of the Gators in 2007. Entering this game, Georgia had lost eight of the last nine meetings with Florida with Richt’s lone win over the Gators coming three games earlier in 2004. But on this day, Georgia wasn’t to be denied. With tailback Knowshon Moreno proving unstoppable by rushing for 188 yards and the Bulldog defense sacking eventual Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow a whopping six times, Georgia – at least for this one fall afternoon – made everything right in this series once again as the Bulldogs beat the Gators 42-30 for what is now only the third time in the past 20 years entering this season’s matchup. Maybe, just maybe, come Saturday afternoon at 3:30, Georgia can begin writing another winning chapter in the Bulldogs’ storied rivalry with the University of Florida.

Dogs vs. Gators Despite disappointing seasons for both teams, the winner Saturday keeps hopes of Atlanta still alive By Jeff Dantzler

I

t is indeed a rare occasion as both Georgia and Florida are unranked heading into Saturday’s reconvening of one of college football’s most storied series in Jacksonville. Since 1990, the year Steve Spurrier took over a perpetually underachieving program and quickly turned Florida into the beast of the Southeastern Conference, at least one of these programs has been ranked – usually both. From 19972008, the Jim Donnan and Mark Richt years that delivered a lot of wins and accolades, Georgia has been ranked highly headed to Jacksonville, right there with the Gators in pursuit of the SEC title. But not this year. Both Georgia and Florida are in the midst of disappointing campaigns, but the Bulldogs have been trending up, winning three straight. Urban Meyer has led the Gators to a pair of national titles, and 13-1 records in three of the past four seasons. This season has been the toughest challenge in his six years at the helm in Gainesville. Florida lost seven players who were picked in the first three rounds of this year’s NFL Draft, including Tim Tebow, arguably the greatest quarterback in SEC history, and a slew of talented defenders. The Gators got off to a 4-0 start, but often sputtered offensively against Miami of Ohio, South Florida and Tennessee. The Gators then routed Kentucky and seemed to be clicking for their highly anticipated showdown with Alabama. But the Crimson Tide annihilated Florida. Then came heart-breaking four and three point losses at home in the swamp to LSU and Mississippi State, saddling Florida with the first three-game losing streak of Meyer’s tenure. Trying to settle in on a quarterback, with John Brantley the better passer and Trey Burton an outstanding runner, and establish an offensive identity is at the top of the Gators to-do list. A healthy Jeff Demps will certainly help, and the Gators get back the suspended Chris Rainey. Georgia is settled at quarterback. Redshirt freshman signal caller Aaron Murray, a native of Tampa, has had an excellent season. Having the top two targets healthy and together, A.J. Green, who was suspended for four games, and Kris Durham,

who battled injury, Murray has fueled a resurgent Bulldog offense. Anemic earlier this season in road losses to South Carolina and Mississippi State, the Bulldogs offense hit its stride midway through the season. Mark Richt has led Georgia to a pair of Southeastern Conference championships and five consensus top ten national rankings. Were it not for failures against Florida, the Bulldogs may very well have captured a precious national title during the highly successful 2000’s. With Florida vulnerable, the Georgia people are starving for a victory. There will be no top ten finish for the Bulldogs or Gators in 2010, but the importance of this game to a proud and storied program that is an astonishing 3-17 against a bitter archrival over the last two decades is enormous to everyone in red and black. So can the Bulldogs do it? Here are some key match-ups that will determine Saturday’s Jacksonville victor: Dogs run D vs. Demps Jeff Demps is one of the fastest players in the country. He is lightning. Florida has had some offensive struggles, most notably in losses to Alabama and Mississippi State. A nicked up Demps greatly hurt Florida’s offense. He’s the big play guy. It’s so tough to sustain drives, and not having a home run threat makes it extra difficult to score. Georgia run defense will have to be up to the task. Disciplined gap play is a big key. So is sure tackling. Sacrificing a yard or two is okay. Gambling to make the big play, then missing Demps is a recipe for a game-changing, difference-making long touchdown run. Green and Durham vs. Florida DBs Ahmad Black and Will Hill give the Gators one of college football’s top safety tandems. The Gators are talented at corner, but certainly miss All-American, first round pick Joe Haden, who just killed Georgia (most notably with a back-breaking 86-yard interception return against the Bulldogs in 2008 that

Photograph by Rob Saye

pushed Florida’s lead to 21-3). Florida prefers playing man defense. This will be Green and Durham the opportunity to hook up with Murray for some big plays. Murray could also have some running opportunities. To beat the Gators, it takes touchdowns. A long score or two would give Georgia the kind of bounce necessary to claim victory Saturday. Mark Richt vs. Urban Meyer Both head coaches have put together outstanding resumes. Both are also in unusual positions. The Bulldogs went 8-5 last year and got off to the worst start for the program since 1993. But Georgia has been trending up. The Gators, after going 13-1 in three of the last four seasons, had to replace more talent than any team in the country this season. Florida has lost three in a row. That’s a first in the Meyer era. Both teams had top ten hopes for 2010. That’s not going to happen, but a win in Jacksonville will be a big boost for whoever comes out on top. It figures to be tight, so whichever coach has his team playing sharp, sound and enthusiastic figures to come out on top.

Florida scouting report

Go to guys for the Gators

Urban Meyer looking for answers in Jacksonville

By Jeff Dantzler

By Murray Poole

#35 Ahmad Black, S 5-9, 190 Sr. Lakeland, Fla. Florida’s leader and the heart and soul of the team, the physical, ball-hawking overachiever has been one of the Southeastern Conference’s premier safeties the last couple of seasons. He’s having a spectacular season here in 2010, and has clearly been Florida’s best player. Black tops the team with 60 tackles in seven games, 23 more than Jelani Jenkins, who is second on the team in stops. He tops the team and is amongst the Southeastern Conference’s league leaders in interceptions with three, with 42 yards in returns. Black was not a five-star recruit, but like former return ace Brandon James, Urban Meyer saw a great deal of potential in an undersized prep star with a huge heart and “game-changeability.

Location: Gainesville, Fla. Conference: SEC Enrollment: 59,050 Record: 4-3 overall and 2-3 in SEC after wins over MiamiOhio (34-12), South Florida (38-14), Tennessee (31-17) and Kentucky (48-14) and consecutive losses to Alabama (6-31), LSU (29-33) and Mississippi State (7-10). Mascot: Albert and Alberta Why Florida could win: What with Florida coming off three straight losses to Alabama, LSU and Mississippi State, the Bulldogs are facing a bunch of wounded Gators with their backs to the proverbial SEC wall. And, too, Florida had the open date this past weekend to iron out some things before facing Georgia this Saturday. The Gators seldom lose three consecutive games – much less four – and to beat Florida, the Bulldogs must first show they can get over the mental hump that has plagued them against the Gators the past 20 years when Georgia has been able to win only three times.

Photograph by Rob Saye

Why Florida could lose: Georgia could and should beat Florida this weekend because this is arguably the worst Gator football team in many a year. The Gators have struggled big-time on offense as John Brantley has yet to show he’s a worthy successor to the legendary Tim Tebow when it comes to running Florida’s spread-option offense. And the Gator defense has looked less than formidable at times also, as evidenced by surrendering 31 points to Alabama and 33 to an LSU offense that was sputtering before it came to The Swamp. Certainly, if the Bulldogs are to ever begin turning this storied series back in their direction, this is the year to do it. What Florida’s coach is saying: “I think a little bit of both (schematic and personnel wise), Florida head coach Urban Meyer said concerning what kind of changes fans will see against Georgia this Saturday. “I don’t want to get in too much detail because it’s not set yet, but we just have to improve. How do you improve? It’s two things: It’s scheme, it’s personnel. One way of getting better personnel wise is getting your guys back healthy. ... I can’t give you exacts and I wouldn’t give you exacts anyways, but that’s what we’re working on right now. What Florida’s players are saying: “We made a big point of that, said Gator senior safety Ahmad Black regarding Florida’s chances of still winning the SEC East title. “One thing we’ve got to keep in the young guys’ head is that we’ve got a long season ahead of us and there’s a lot of things that we can get accomplished still with three losses. We’ve got to take it one game at a time. We could win the next two (games), lose the third and we’re out of it. We just got to take it one game at a time and let the young guys know that. What Florida’s fans are saying: “We control our own destiny and we do deserve to go to Atlanta, said one still-optimistic Gator supporter. “If we beat UGA and South Carolina we will win the east. If we do that then who is more deserving than us? We should beat FSU and finish with a pretty decent record. We will still go to a respectable bowl. There is plenty of time to salvage this season. But this, from another not-so-optimistic Florida fan: “We may lose all three of our remaining SEC games. Vandy on the road isn’t exactly a gimme for this team. Georgia and Carolina are going to stomp us. We have a better shot at dead last in the east than winning it, and I really don’t think I am being pessimistic. Our offense really is THAT bad. Noteworthy: To illustrate the big lead the Bulldogs once owned in this series, Georgia continues to remain ahead of the Gators by a 47-39-2 tally despite having lost to Florida 17 times in the last 20 meetings. Former Georgia coach Vince Dooley, for example, posted a 17-7-1 record in his 25 games against the Gators. After downing Florida 42-30 in 2007, Mark Richt’s Bulldogs have been hammered by the Gators by scores of 49-10 and 41-17 the past two years. Richt is 2-7 against Florida entering Saturday’s meeting.

#12 John Brantley, QB 6-3, 220 RJr. Ocala Barry Young, Keith Montgomery, Tron Jackson (who has an excellent band from Macon named in his honor) and David McCluskey had the unenviable task of trying to fill the shoes of Herschel Walker, the greatest college football player ever. Brantley is the successor to the SEC’s most successful quarterback ever, Florida’s all-time football hero Tim Tebow. Brantley has a strong arm and is a good athlete, but has had his ups and downs this season, while throwing for 1,266 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions. True freshman Trey Burton has been the rushing specialist from behind center, with eight touchdowns on the ground. Burton tallied six total touchdowns in the Gators blowout of Kentucky.

#2 Jeff Demps, RB 5-8, 190 Jr. Winter Garden, Fla. One of the fastest players in college football, Demps gives the Gators a big time big play threat. With Demps hobbled the past few weeks, Florida’s offense has taken a huge hit, including a porous performance in a 10-7 loss to Mississippi state in the swamp on September 16. Demps is averaging a whopping 6.5 yards per carry with a long of 72. Florida will also have Chris Rainey back as a weapon. The open date couldn’t have come at a better time. Demps was at his most dangerous two years ago when defenses had to focus everything on All-American dynamos Tim Tebow and Percy Harvin. He was lighting fast surprise counter-puncher. But through attrition and some offensive struggles, Demps has become the Gators No. 1 offensive option.

keys

to a victory 1.

Strike First – In 1997, Georgia jumped to a 7-0 lead over Florida and the Bulldogs won 37-17. Georgia led the Gators 7-0 in 2004 and won 31-24. The Bulldogs led Florida 7-0 (which was cause for much celebration) and Georgia won 42-30. You get the picture. When Georgia has struck first and early – and all of those 7-0 leads in the lone three wins against Florida in the last 20 years came in the first quarter – the Dogs have won. The confidence gets going and the Bulldogs believe. And coaches and players can say what they want, but Florida has clearly been in Georgia’s head. Several times the Bulldogs have been the better team during this horrid Jacksonville abyss, but the Gators have come out on top. A 7-0 lead on Saturday would be a good sign that Georgia will start the new decade on the Banks of the St. John’s victoriously.

2.

Touchdowns – Too many times in the 2000s Georgia has had to settle for field goals. This is a recipe for losing. And all too often, excellent Bulldog kickers have missed those field goal attempts. The SEC’s all time leading scorer Billy Bennett missed seven kicks in Jacksonville. All-SEC kicker Brandon Coutu had the only two miss game of his outstanding career in the heart-breaking 14-10 loss in 2005. Current All-SEC star kicker Blair Walsh had two misses in Jacksonville in 2008. The winds blow funny off the St. John’s. Georgia has to get TD’s, and if that means gambling on a couple of fourth downs, so be it.

3.

Avoid the turnovers – Does this theme sound familiar? Blow it in the red zone. Settle for a field goal. Miss the field goal. Be on the ropes. Florida pick six. It’s happened way too many times through the years. This will be Aaron Murray’s first start against the Gators, and the Tampa native is one of the Bulldogs prime weapons. But he must avoid those oh so costly interceptions that have plagued his predecessors and been the unfortunate finishing touches on dashed Bulldog dreams.

Photograph by Rob Saye

4.

Create turnovers – This is the flip side of the above. Florida’s offense has been sputtering, but the Gators have big play ability – especially with lightning fast Jeff Demps healthy. Georgia could really get the crowd and confidence rolling by coming up with a couple of turnovers that lead to touchdowns. The Bulldogs will be looking for a big boost and lift early, and the defense could deliver with a pick or fumble.

5.

BELIEVE – This is a new decade and an opportunity for a new starting point for Georgia. The record over the last two decades is one of the most embarrassing in Bulldog history – right there with the infamous eight-game drought against The Enemy from ’49-’56. From 1997-2008, Georgia was as good and sometimes better every year except for two, but just couldn’t get over the hump. Some good old fashion confidence and belief – combined with the aforementioned touchdowns and forced turnovers – is an absolute essential. And looking ahead, Georgia is in really good shape at quarterback for the next few seasons. Maybe, just maybe, the Bulldogs could turn this thing. But it has to happen Saturday. It won’t though if the Dogs themselves don’t truly believe it will. — Jeff Dantzler

loran smith Bill Saye made the difference for Bulldogs against Gators in 1954

(left-right) Bobby Pate, Bobby Bowden and Bill Saye. Pate, who played for Bowden at South Georgia Junior College, later coached for Bill Saye at Hartwell High School.

The attitude of former players often ranges from critic to loyalist. Interestingly, some of the most vocal critics often played on teams which did not fare so well which makes one conclude that they of all people should appreciate down times. After all, when they played, they gave it their best. They didn’t lose because they liked it. They didn’t fail because it was fun. On the contrary, it was a frustration that often is recalled with great disappointment. One of Georgia’s most devoted former players, a loyalist non-pariel, is Bill Saye who lettered for the Bulldogs 1953-55. He grew up in Athens and was joined at Georgia by his boyhood buddies, Jimmy Williams and Willie Fowler. Rules were a little looser in their day which meant this threesome was delighted when they were invited to go through spring practice at Georgia in the spring of their last year at Athens High. Georgia’s practice fields were convenient, and they felt “honored” to practice with the Bulldog varsity. Naturally, when they made spirited plays in scrimmage sessions, the coaches were wont to chide the varsity. “Look a there, so and so, you let a little ole high school boy run over you,” or “hey that high school boy just made you look silly.” While the Athens triumvirate had no interest in showing up their varsity teammates, they took it as a badge of honor that they were part of the team and felt blessed with the opportunity to wear the red and black. Following college graduation, Saye and Williams entered coaching, later turning to sales and management careers. Fowler joined the family business, “Fowler Products.” Inseparable in high school, they remained close throughout the years, with Saye and Williams frequently returning to Athens for football games and social outings. When Saye and Williams retired, they settled in Athens and renewed their friendship with Fowler. You saw them at Bulldog games and Georgia related events. They were, again, inseparable. They all had been season ticket buyers in football, but they added to their schedule baseball games and women’s basketball. Saye became treasurer of the Wally’s Boys Association which is an organization of the former players and friends of their beloved coach, Wallace Butts. He brought energy to the organization, which, with his affinity for detail, gave the association a much needed touch. He has always kept in touch with his former teammates, taking time to clip articles from newspapers and sending to his friends: A story about a former teammate, news of a teammate’s family member for some achievement, obituaries and other news of interest. Saye was the one who remembered birthdays and anniversaries. When a teammate or someone in their family died, he reached out to the survivors. Bill Saye cares about his friends and former teammates. As soon as he and his pretty wife, Margaret, became resettled in Athens, Bill became involved in the community. In addition to his work with the Wally’s Boys Association, he volunteers for the Athens Regional Medical Center. He joined the Touchdown Club of Athens and will be an officer in the coming year. He also assists the University of Georgia Hall of Fame chapter with its annual golf outing and banquet. For the last half dozen years, he, along

www.bulldawgillustrated.com

with Willie Fowler, made a special effort to tend to the needs of their longtime buddy, Jimmy Williams. Back surgery left Williams with mobility issues, and his two former teammates were always pitching in. They ran errands for Jimmy, they took him to countless Bulldog athletic events and sports functions. They took it hard when he passed away last summer. Bill Saye was a fine football player in an era when the Bulldogs struggled on the football field. The long, grueling practices of his day were a challenge, but he concluded that the tradeoff—scrimmaging long afternoons on the practice field for an education—was to his advantage. He believed he got the best of the bargain. There was more. He was proud to wear the red and black. He was proud to play for the taskmaster Wallace Butts. He was proud to give it all he had so the chapel bell would ring on Saturday night. His greatest game came in Jacksonville in the Gator Bowl in 1954, a year in which the Bulldogs were inconsistent on offense, but only one team had scored two touchdowns on Coach Wallace Butts’s defense by the time of the big game in Jacksonville. With two victories and a tie in conference play, the Bulldogs could foresee the possibility of a bowl invitation, which had become standard in the forties. Georgia, like Florida, envisioned a run at the SEC title. The headliner in the 14-13 thriller was Bill Saye, who grew up playing in the culvert that runs underneath Sanford Stadium. Saye learned about Butts’s hard-nosed style of play from a Butts’ disciple at Athens High: Weyman Sellers. As a local boy playing for the local team, this meant that Friday night lights, for Saye, took place at Sanford Stadium. Although he has a tranquil demeanor, no Bulldog ever had a greater love of alma mater. Second effort, for Saye, was as natural as tying his shoelaces. He needed no practice field motivation. In the Florida game, his three interceptions (one was ruled incomplete because he stepped on the boundary as he caught the ball) and a fumble recovery were critical to Georgia’s victory. Herman Hickman, the heavyweight coach with a Yale affiliation, covered college football for Sports Illustrated in those days and wrote the following about Saye: “The Gators’ hopes of gaining a conference title and bowl bid turned dark. A Georgia center named Bill Saye (Hey) turned out the lights. Saye was the difference with two critical pass interceptions. He was the difference when he recovered a key Gator fumble. And he barreled in with Roy Wilkins to rush the kicker on the extra point try that could have turned Georgia’s victory into a frustrating tie.” in the fourth quarter, with the Bulldogs clinging to a one-point lead, punter Bobby Garrard punted dead to the Florida one-yard line. There were five minutes left on the clock when the Gators went to the air in an attempt to move downfield. Bill Saye, again with propitious timing, came up with a game-saving interception at the Florida 22 and, in the process, killed the Gators’ hopes for winning the Southeastern Conference title. It was Bill Saye who made the difference with his sparkling defensive performance in Georgia’s 14-13 victory.

National signing day for the recruiting class of 2011 has not arrived yet, but Coach Mark Richt and his staff are already building their class for 2012. CJ Curry, a Wide Receiver from North Hall High School in Gainesville, Georgia committed to the Bulldogs on October 9, accepting the offer her earned at Dawg Night in Athens this summer. Although he is only a junior, Curry already has good size (6’2, 200 pounds) for a high school Wide Receiver. Curry is happy with his commitment and has already started recruiting other athletes in the 2012 class, including St. Pious star Cornerback Geno Smith. This young man will be one of the top overall athletes in the State of Georgia for the class of 2012, and he is excited to be a Bulldog. Curry’s commitment has the Bulldogs’ class of 2012 off to a good start. Recruiting Tidbits Several big time recruits have visited between the hedges during the Bulldogs’ victories over Tennessee and Vanderbilt. One of those was playmaker, Quan Bray, from Troupe County High School. This four star athlete is currently ranked as one of the top 8 players in the State of Georgia and is ranked one of the top 120 overall football players in the country this year. Bray has lined up at Quarterback, Running Back, In the Slot and on defense at Cornerback. He is also a standout on Special Teams. He visited Athens for the victory over Tennessee and reportedly had a great time. Currently he lists his five favorite schools as Georgia, Alabama, Clemson, Auburn and Florida. While Bray currently plays on both sides of the ball, he has made it clear to those recruiting him that he prefers to play offense. Bray has a good relationship with his recruiting coach, Coach John Lilly, and really has appreciated the time he has spent with Head Coach Mark Richt. Right now, it looks like Georgia and Auburn may lead for Bray, but Alabama, Clemson, Florida, and many others are still very much in the hunt for this blue-chip athlete. One of the other recruits that Bray said he spent time with in Athens was four star athlete and current Alabama commitment, LaMichael Fanning. Fanning is a Defensive Tackle at Harris County High School. He and Bray were teammates and are still very close. While Fanning still says he is committed to Alabama, he does note that he is very fond of Georgia and has a good connection with the coaches, especially Coach Rodney Garner. He intends to take a few official visits after his senior football season has completed, and the Bulldogs will get one of those visits. It is clear that Fanning does still have a high level of interest in the Bulldogs. Even the other recruits that visited Athens with Fanning have said that anything could happen with his recruitment. Rivals Radio has announced recently that they believe CarverColumbus standout, Isaiah Crowell is favoring Alabama over Georgia. Others close to Crowell say that is not the case. The only person who knows at this point is Isaiah Crowell. In my opinion, if Crowell were to sign with the Bulldogs, he would have the opportunity to come in as

a freshman and have the same impact that Marcus Lattimore has had in Columbia. Hopefully these reports about Crowell favoring the Tide are simply attempts to add intrigue to his recruitment. In addition to Crowell and Bray, the Bulldogs have been examining a couple of other options at Running Back. Recruitniks are already familiar with the Grady standout, Damian Swann. Recently, the Bulldog coaches asked for film on Grady’s Running Back, Marcus Caffey. Caffey is 6’0, 191 pounds and has played both Running Back and Defensive Back. So far this year, Caffey has rushed for 768 yards and eight touchdowns through seven games. He has averaged a remarkable 13 yards per carry on the season. This three star athlete also has solid speed (4.4/40). While he currently lists his top five as Illinois, Perdue, Arkansas, South Carolina, and Kentucky (all of whom have offered), Caffey admits that if the Bulldogs were to offer, they would move into his top five. He would like the opportunity to play for the “hometown team Bulldogs, and would love the opportunity to play with Swann. Caffey and Swann have played together since they were four years old. The Bulldog coaches have also shown increased interest recently in Remi Watson, a Running Back from Like Gibson High School, in Lakeland, Florida. Watson has good size already (5’11, 200 pounds) and runs with power between tackles. Last year, Watson rushed for over 1400 yards and looks to eclipse that mark this year. According to Watson, Bulldogs’ Coach McClendon wants to bring him in for a visit as soon as possible. Like Caffey, Watson also could excel in the defensive secondary. Southwest DeKalb standout Terrance Smith took his first official visit the weekend of October 11 to the Classic City to watch the Bulldogs defeat the Vols. Georgia’s new defensive staff has been working for weeks to get Smith on campus. Not only did they get this standout Linebacker on campus, but it appears that they have him rethinking his commitment to Florida State. Smith loves Coach Grantham’s defensive scheme and thinks he could use his size (6’3, 215 pounds) and speed (4.58/40) to terrorize opposing signal callers. Terrance is one of the top 15 outside Linebackers in the country. It would be a real coup if the Bulldogs could steal Smith away from the Seminoles. Still a Long Way to Go Right now, there are rumors flying about any number of bluechip prospects in this year’s recruiting class. There have also recently been rumors regarding coaches like Urban Meyer and Nick Saban. Please remember that these are just rumors and there is a lot of time before National Signing Day in February. If the Bulldogs continue to take care of business on the field and they are able to get some of these prospects onto campus before signing day, I feel very good about our chances of landing a top five recruiting class. There is still a lot of football to be played this year and a lot of commitments to be earned. Go Dawgs.

A view from Jacksonville Longtime North Florida radio personality thinks the Bulldogs will take down the Gators By Jeff Dantzler

F

rank Frangie, an old friend, standout talent, and one of the great minds in all of college football, offers his thoughts on the Dogs and Gators. Frank is the president of SportsDay Productions and hosts an excellent daily talk show from 4-7 p.m. daily on Jacksonville’s 1010 XL.

What’s your take on Georgia? A team that is much better than its record. I had the Georgia-Tennessee game and that didn't look like a four-loss team to me. I think A.J. Green came back about the time Aaron Murray started figuring out this college stuff. The defense is athletic. A very dangerous team. Who plays in the SEC Championship Game? Right now, I'd say South Carolina by virtue of their win over Georgia -- I think Florida is really leaking oil. And I just don't see Auburn winning in Tuscaloosa, so I'll say South Carolina-Alabama rematch. What’s the Gator nation’s number one beef during this losing streak, the O.C.? Probably Steve Addazio, the coordinator. But the bigger question is how did they get to this point. I think everyone thought when Brantley got the job, they would simply change from a spread option team to a more conventional, I-formation, pro-set team, like Georgia. Everyone is finding out it isn't that easy. Is Florida struggling to find an offensive identity? Absolutely. Mainly because the pieces don't fit the plan. John Brantley is a pure dropback quarterback. He doesn't run the option well, he isn't made to throw swing passes to the sideline or run the read play. He is a downfield passer. They can play Trey Burton at quarterback, who is more of an option guy. But do you really play the true freshman over the fourth year junior with the big arm? What do you think the key has been for Florida’s mastery over Georgia? Especially in that ’97-’08 stretch when the talent was usually

comparable and the Dogs were actually better a few times. I really think Florida's domination of the last two decades is similar to Georgia's domination of Florida the two decades before that. You win a few and start believing you are better. For that reason, you play a little more loose, a little less tense. The opponent expects to lose so they tighten up and, invariably, don't play as well. The here-we-go-again mentality sets in for both sides. Terribly hard thing to change. Something dramatic has to happen to change it. You know how Florida changed it after Georgia dominated in the 70s and 80s? Steve Spurrier got there, made it priority number one, and then absolutely blew Georgia out his first two games and then found a way to win a few the Gators shouldn't have in the next two years. After that, Georgia started thinking they "couldn't" beat Florida. The same way Florida thought before that. What does Georgia have to do to win? Stack the box and take away Demps and Rainey, who will be back I believe. Make Florida, which has had a terrible time throwing the ball down the field, throw it. And blitz. The Gators have really struggled with pressure. And I think A.J. Green isolated. Florida loves to play man back there, but I'm not sure anyone can play Green man to man. I said today on the air, he may be the best player -- not just the best receiver -- in the country. What does Florida have to do to win? Somehow find a passing game. That will open up lanes for the runners, who are fast and shifty guys, but not physical runners. Hit some passes early in the game. And I would double Green -- make some other receivers beat you. I like Georgia's receivers overall and

Photograph by Rob Saye

all three of those tight ends are nice players. But they're still not A. J. Green.

Do you agree that these are two of the five to ten premier head coaching jobs in the country? If you go ten-deep, probably. At least seven deep. These are two great jobs. But so are Alabama and LSU and Texas and Oklahoma and USC. Ohio State is a great job because you sacrifice proximity to as many athletes as the southern schools have, but you gain far less competition in your region for recruits and wins. Who wins Saturday? Georgia. They are trending up, playing very well, gaining some confidence. Florida is reeling. I haven't picked Georgia to win this one in a long time - even when the Dogs had Stafford and Moreno and were No. 1 before the season, I said before the season Florida would beat them. And I picked Florida the year Georgia rolled them in 2007, too. But this year, I like the Dogs.

Kevin Butler’s players of the game Kevin Butler, former University of Georgia legendary kicker and a member of the Georgia radio broadcast team, will each week during the 2010 football season select his offensive, defensive and special teams players of the week for Bulldawg Illustrated. Here are Butler’s selections and reasons why for the Bulldogs’ 44-31 win over Kentucky Saturday. OFFENSE – Senior tackle Clint Boling, whose blocking while performing at several positions on the Georgia offensive line, paved the way for the Bulldogs to rush for 177 yards and also enabled tailback Washaun Ealey to run for 157 yards on 28 carries and set a new school record for rushing touchdowns with five. “I think Clint with his versatility on the offensive line has given us a chance to not only have (Trinton) Sturdivant in the game with Clint but also has given (Kenarious) Gates a great chance to develop as a young offensive lineman who can contribute right now, and that’s because of Clint’s ability to play several positions on the offensive line, said Butler. “Clint is a senior, a leader and captain and has worked hard to have success, and by having an offensive lineman that can play several positions on that line is just a tremendous advantage to Coach Searels and the whole unit. DEFENSE – Junior outside linebacker Justin Houston, who recorded five tackles and 2.5 sacks for 22 yards in losses while causing a Kentucky fumble that led to the Bulldogs’ first touchdown and also recovering a Wildcat fumble that led to another Georgia score. “Justin had an unbelievable game and is an unbelievable athlete, said Butler. “He caused their first fumble and I think he should have been credited with three sacks. Justin is certainly an All-America candidate on our defense. He plays with tremendous tenacity and unrelentless hustle. He’s a redshirt junior that is playing the role of a senior leader on our defense. Justin leads the SEC in sacks and is sixth in the nation and we’ll certainly need him to get to the Gator QB a couple of times this week. SPECIAL TEAMS – Junior cornerback and kick returner Brandon Boykin, who had the third 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in his career and also tied the SEC record with his fourth kickoff return for a touchdown. “Brandon’s electricity returning the ball on kickoffs is unmatched in the SEC, said Butler. “His ability to make that TD return on kickoffs makes teams alter their kickoff coverage. Anytime we can get the ball in his hands, he’s certainly a threat to take it to the end zone. His 100-yard return against Kentucky nullified their attempt to get the crowd back in the game and thus gave Georgia a bigger lead without even having our offense on the field. — Murray Poole

Game rewind: Georgia 44 Kentucky 31 By Murray Poole

Georgia continued its march toward Jacksonville and this Saturday’s annual meeting with arch-rival Florida by ringing up over 40 points for a third straight game and declawing the Kentucky Wildcats 44-31 Saturday night in Lexington. And one thing’s for certain, when junior tailback Caleb King returns to the Bulldog lineup this week, he may have a difficult time regaining the starting job from sophomore Washaun Ealey. After running for 123 yards in the homecoming win over Vanderbilt, Ealey turned in a record-breaking performance in the bluegrass, setting a new school mark for rushing touchdowns in a single game with five and tying Robert Edwards for most scores in a game as Edwards tallied four touchdowns rushing and one by receiving against South Carolina in 1995. Ealey also charged for 157 yards on 28 carries en route to those scores. “Our offensive line and (fullback) Shaun Chapas was blowing them off the ball early, and our defense made plays and put us in position to make plays, said Ealey. “It’s a great honor to get the record but I’ve got to put that behind me now and get ready to face Florida next week. “No one has ever had five rushing touchdowns in the history of Georgia football so that’s a big deal, said Georgia coach Mark Richt of Ealey’s feat. “Washaun is holding onto the ball well, is running well and when he gets banged up a little, he sucks it up and goes back into the ball game. I saw a lot of positive things from Washaun tonight. The Bulldogs, finally all even at 4-4 on the season and 33 in the SEC, streaked into a 28-3 lead on a 3-yard run by Ealey, a spectacular 100-yard kickoff return by Brandon Boykin – the third century return in his career – a 2-yard run by Ealey and then another 2-yard run by Ealey. Ealey’s first score was set up when Justin Houston separated Kentucky quarterback Mike Hartline from the ball and Cornelius Washington recovered for the Bulldogs at the Wildcat 23. Ealey’s second score came after the Georgia defense stuffed Kentucky on a fourth-down gamble at its own 39, and the Georgia tailback’s third touchdown followed a 56-yard Drew Butler punt to the Wildcat 3-yard line and another UK fumble that Houston recovered at the Wildcat five. The Wildcats’ firsthalf points came via a 41-yard field goal by Craig McIntosh and a 35-yard strike from Hartline to LaRod King. Ealey then chalked up the school record with his fourth and fifth touchdowns in the second half, on runs of two and one yards as the Bulldogs built leads of 34-10 and 41-17 before Hartline continued his assault on the Georgia secondary and finished the night with 353 passing yards and four touchdowns to pull Kentucky within the 13-point final margin. “We got four turnovers, take them away and it would have

been a much closer game, added Richt. “Our Achilles heel for us again was third and long. It’s good to get them in third and long, we’ve just got to finish off those drives. But it’s great to get a win on the road and we needed it right now. What Worked

Obviously, Ealey and the running game worked as the Bulldogs rushed for 177 yards. And the Georgia passing game kept the Wildcats honest as Aaron Murray, though not throwing downfield very often, was 9-of-12 for 113 yards. Defensively, the Bulldogs forced those four UK turnovers and also limited the Wildcat running game to just 70 net yards. And, too, when Georgia had an opportunity to put Kentucky in a big hole early in the game, it did just that. What Didn’t Work

So many times, Georgia couldn’t get off the field on third down as Hartline burned the Bulldog secondary by throwing for 353 yards and those four scores with 27-of-43 completions. Like Richt said, if the Bulldogs hadn’t gotten the Cats into that early hole ‌‌ In other words, if Georgia had played any pass defense at all, Kentucky doesn’t come anywhere close to putting those 31 points on the Bulldogs. Top Performers

Ealey, of course, was the big story on this victorious night but there were numerous other Bulldogs who deserve the spotlight. A.J. Green had six receptions for 86 yards, Boykin had his 100-yard kickoff return and totaled two returns for 123 yards while also matching the SEC record with his fourth career touchdown return, and Butler averaged 50.7 on three punts including twice kicking the Cats dead inside the 10. Defensively, senior linebacker Akeem Dent continued his string of double-figure stops by rendering a career-high 15 tackles, Houston had five tackles and 2.5 sacks to increase his SECleading figure to nine and sophomore corner Sanders Commings had his third interception of the season. Rested Gators Await Saturday

The Bulldogs will meet a Florida team Saturday in Jacksonville that has dropped three consecutive games but had the weekend off to iron out its mistakes and get ready to attempt to defeat Georgia for the 18th time in the past 21 years. “We get a chance to go play Florida in Jacksonville, said Richt. “It’s something we always look forward to and we’re looking forward to seeing all our fans and the players’ families down there. We’re just looking forward to playing that game. “These past couple of games, we’ve seen that when we win the turnover battle, we win the game, concluded Bulldog defensive back Commings. “It helps us get the victory. I’m really looking forward to playing Florida. I would go down and play Florida tomorrow if I could, he said.

Bulldawg leader: Aaron Murray

His Foundation: His mother, Lauren Murray

Georgia quarterback would love to notch a win versus his homestate Florida Gators

Parents names: Dennis and Lauren Murray. Siblings names: Josh, 26 (a senior safety on Georgia’s team); Stephanie, 18.

By Murray Poole

lthough Aaron Murray is a redshirt freshman quarterback at Georgia, he is by no means a newcomer to the Bulldog system as Murray has been in the program for nearly two years now. And perhaps that strong familiarity with the Georgia offense is the reason the former Tampa high school great is off to a splendid start in his UGA career. After Georgia’s 43-0 win over Vanderbilt when Murray had a career-high 287 yards passing (15for-24, two touchdowns, no interceptions) and a season-high 190.4 passing efficiency, he was named SEC Freshman of the Week for a second straight week. And entering the Bulldogs’ game at Kentucky this past Saturday night, Murray’s season passing efficiency of 157.2 was No. 18 in the nation, No. 1 among freshmen, and he had thrown 12 touchdown passes with only three interceptions. In this question-and-answer session with Murray and his mom, Lauren, the Bulldog Nation is given a special insight into Georgia’s outstanding young field general. What do you view as the most important quality in being a leader for the team? To be a leader, you just need to be hard working and come to work every day. Everyone wants to get better but a lot of people don’t do what they say. To be a true leader, your actions speak for yourself, and it’s not just talking but doing the work. My goal is to lead by example, and that’s the way I try to lead.

A

Who do you consider to be the most important mentor in your life so far, and why? It would be my father. He’s been a big part of my life, and my goal is to be like him. Dad has done a tremendous job of raising my brother, my sister and myself and the way he treats my mom, he’s just a great man. He never asks anything for himself and is always putting us first. He’s always working to make sure we have everything we need, and he’s the one person I would want to be like. What fellow player on the team motivates you to be the best you can be and why is that the case? It’s Shaun Chapas. The way he works … he’s definitely the hardest worker on the team and one of the top leaders on the team. Shaun knows how to push everyone’s button to get everyone motivated, and always has us ready to go. Being a young quarterback, he’s always encouraging me, keeping me calm and ready to go.

Main attribute that makes Aaron a leader: Aaron is very goal-oriented and always keeps his eye on the big picture. And as a leader, that’s good because he never gives up. And he wouldn’t ask anyone to do anything he’s not willing to do himself. Aaron really leads by example. Best childhood story: Aaron was a great baseball player also when he was young and played AAU travel ball and league ball. Well, he would get in trouble because he always had a football in the dugout. The coaches would yell at him to get that football out of the dugout. He was always carrying the football around and the baseball coach would get mad and say, “This is baseball season, not football.” So Aaron would have to give it to parents to keep while the baseball game was going on. Photograph by Rob Saye

What is the best play or game you’ve had in this first year as Georgia’s quarterback and why? My best play would be the 35-yard touchdown run against Tennessee. I never scored on a run that long in high school so that was pretty cool, pretty exciting. And definitely my best game overall would also be the Tennessee game. Of course, I’m hoping there’s a lot more left in me in the games to come. When you leave Georgia in three-and-a-half more years, what do you hope folks say about your contribution to the program? Just going back to the leadership thing, I’m hoping people say that this was a kid who was always here to work hard. I hope everyone sees that, that I’ve put in the extra time and made sure that no one outworks me. What regular Georgia opponent do you enjoy playing the most and why? Of course, I haven’t played them all yet. There’s a couple of big-time rivals left to play such as Florida, Auburn and Georgia Tech. They’re all very big rivals for us and should be fun games. Of course, it would be cool to beat Florida (this Saturday). I grew up in Florida and a lot of my friends go to Florida, and it was a hard decision for me to leave the state. I have friends who go there and they have texted me that they have tickets to the game and will be excited to watch me play. I’ll have friends wearing both colored jerseys at the game, and my uncle went to Florida and he’s all excited about the game. It’ll just be fun having a lot of family and friends there and a win would be great but then, a win in general is always great.

Best thing about his time at Georgia: At Georgia, Aaron’s figured out what he wants to do professionally, and that’s to be a football coach. Obviously, he would like to play professional football if the opportunity presents itself. But he’s changed his major from broadcast journalism to psychology because he thought he could use it better in coaching. Nicest thing he’s ever done for you: Aaron does it every day – he texts scripture to me every morning. The first thing in the morning when I wake up, I have a text from him with the scripture of the day. Of course, he’s always the first to call on special occasions, such as my birthday and Mother’s Day. Aaron is just very thoughtful. A few things about Aaron outside of football: Aaron actually enjoys reading a lot. When he has leisure time, he likes reading and going to movies. And he really enjoys working with children in Special Ed. Most entertaining story about UGA fans: The Georgia fans are really phenomenal. They’ve hung in there behind the team, and I think they’re great. We’ve really enjoyed being around a lot of them, and the parents (of players) are just great, too. We’re making some lifelong friends there. What has Coach Richt meant to Aaron? I think with both Coach Richt and Coach (Mike) Bobo, they’ve given Aaron the opportunity to live his dream. Not everybody gets the opportunity to live out their dream, and they’ve also given Aaron the opportunity for his brother to be by his side at Georgia. — Murray Poole

Jeff Dantzler’s Top 25 It was another great October Saturday. For the third consecutive week, the top ranked team in the country went on the road, faced a dangerous foe, and lost. Oregon will face arguably its toughest test at Southern Cal this coming week. The big game of the week was on the plains, and Auburn came through against LSU. The SEC West is just stacked. TCU, Utah and Boise State are all sniffing BCS berths. And kudos to Navy for beating Notre Dame again, Anchors Away! 1. Oregon – It would be tough for Oregon to be much more impressive. This offense is dynamic and dominating. Oregon just sliced through UCLA in a 60-13 pounding of the Bruins. Now comes arguably the Ducks toughest remaining regular season test, a visit to the Coliseum to face Southern Cal. 2. Auburn – War Damn Eagle! Auburn is flat out on fire. Cameron Newton is a leading Heisman Trophy contender and he headlines an outstanding backfield with some terrific runners. Nick Fairley is a beast on the nose. He dominated LSU’s offensive line. 3. Alabama - Even though Tennessee is down, for the Crimson Tide to roll into Neyland Stadium and blow out the Volunteers is a big deal. Bama got it cranked up in the second half. Now the Tide gets an open date, as does LSU, before the big battle in Baton Rouge. 4. Texas Christian – The Horned Frogs got their most impressive win of the season with a 38-7 victory over Air Force. TCU and Utah are on a collision course for an undefeated Noember showdown. Gary Patterson has a dynamite defense. 5. Missouri - The Tigers got one of the biggest wins in school history this past Saturday, taking care of Oklahoma in Columbia. The Missouri offense was dynamite and the defense did just enough for the Tigers to pull off the upset of the top-ranked Sooners. 6. Michigan State – The Spartans were five and a half feet under, trailing Northwestern 17-0 and 24-14, but Michigan State came off the deck and got a big victory. This looks like a charmed team, and 8-0 is sweet music in East Lansing. 7. LSU – In a typical hard-fought, physical meeting with Auburn, LSU came up short on the plains. The Bayou Bengals just can’t get the offense consistently going. There’s an open date and then Alabama at Tiger Stadium. Bama is off as well. 8. Utah – Kyle Whittingham has Utah clicking on all cylinders. The Runnin’ Utes just pummeled Colorado State 59-6 this past Saturday night. Utah can do it all offensively. The November showdown with TCU will have big ramifications. 9. Boise State – The Broncos had Saturday off, and shouldn’t have much trouble the rest of the way. Nevada and maybe Hawaii could hang in there with Boise State, but that’s it. Chris Pederson has created some major separation for Boise in the WAC. 10. Oklahoma – The Sooners dreams of an undefeated season came crashing down in Columbia, as Missouri steamrolled the Sooners. Oklahoma lost a lot of juice to the draft. Missouri really cut up the Sooners D, and Bob Stoops was disappointed in that. 11. Florida State – The Seminoles had an open date and will need to be on top of their game against North Carolina State Thursday night. Christian Ponder is a fantastic quarterback and this is Florida State’s offense is its best since 2000. 12. Stanford – Jim Harbaugh led the Cardinal to a tougher than expected win over hapless Washington State. Andrew Luck is a real talent at quarterback, a potential Number One overall pick. He could be Stanford’s best signal caller since the best of them all, John Elway.

13. Wisconsin – In what was arguably the best game of the day, the Badgers came back and beat Iowa 31-30 at Kinnick Stadium. It was an impressive victory on the heels of that memorable domination of Ohio State in Camp Randall Stadium. 14. Nebraska –In what was the highest scoring major game of the day, Nebraska outgunned Oklahoma State 51-41 in Stillwater. This was a big bounce back for Big Red after that disappointing loss at home to Texas. 15. Arizona – The Wildcats put together a nice effort, downing Washington. Arizona has really come along and they’re hanging in the PAC-10 race. The Wildcats are on the road the next two weeks at UCLA and Stanford. 16. Oklahoma State – It was a tough first loss for the Cowboys who went toe to toe with Nebraska in a Big XII offensive shootout. The Cornhuskers came out on top 51-41. But Oklahoma State got some help in the South Division, and the finale with Oklahoma could determine who plays for the conference title. 17. Ohio State – The Buckeyes pounded Purdue 49-0 in a double redemption game. Ohio State lost to Purdue a year ago and wanted revenge for that. And the Buckeyes wanted to get right after losing in Madison the week prior. 18. Arkansas – The Razorbacks erased any upset alerts early in their win over Ole Miss. Arkansas got the running game going, and when Ryan Mallett can throw off of play-action, it’s just too easy. Greg Childs and Joe Adams are one of the country’s top pair of wide receivers. 19. Iowa – What a heartbreaker for the Hawkeyes, who fell 31-30 to Wisconsin in Iowa City. Iowa had a shot down the stretch, but didn’t manage the clock well. The Hawkeyes had a 30-24 lead, but Wisconsin put together a big time drive to win it. 20. South Carolina – The Gamecocks bounced back from a devastating loss at Kentucky, and muddled their way to a 21-7 win at Vanderbilt. South Carolina did it without Marcus Lattimore. Big ones with Arkansas and Florida are on the horizon, and the Gamecocks are in the driver’s seat for SEC East. 21. Southern Cal – The Trojans absolutely pounded Cal two weeks ago and seem to have things going in the right direction. Southern Cal will have to be on its “A-game” against high-powered Oregon Saturday at the Coliseum. 22. Miami – The Hurricanes put it all together Saturday night and pounded North Carolina. That was an especially nice for Miami, since North Carolina is coached by Butch Davis, who rebuilt the Hurricanes. 23. Mississippi State – This is turning into one of Mississippi State’s best seasons. There’s still some heavy lifting to do, but chalking up wins over Florida and Georgia in the same season doesn’t happen much in Starkville. The only losses are to Auburn and LSU. It got a little against UAB though. 24. Virginia Tech – Undefeated in ACC play, the Hokies have really turned things around since those losses to Boise State and James Madison to start the season. Virginia Tech really put it on Duke Saturday. Tyrod Taylor is having an excellent year at quarterback. 25. Navy – It was shades of Joe Bellino and Roger Staubauch as Navy beat the fight out of the Irish. Navy is rolling at 5-2 and the Midshipmen will be belting out “Anchors Away” extra loud all week long, as the boys from Annapolis have won three of the last four against Notre Dame.

Those that made the trek to the Blugrass State had a great seat for the Washaun Ealey show and the Dawgs rode his record five touchdown performance to a convincing victory over the state revered Kentucky Wilcats. The 44-31 victory runs the winning streak to three games and finds many a fan forgetting about the dismal start. The boys have finally evened the overall record at 4-4 while also posting the same number on each side of the column in conference play. Some have even been willing to discuss the ways the Eastern division crown can find its way to the Butts-Mehre Building. That’s what happens when a game is in hand early. That’s what

nor to this winning streak we find ourselves in the midst of, it won’t mean much more than newsprint if we don’t get things done this weekend. Yeah, it’s nice beating up on Vandy and Kentucky. Whipping Tennessee is always nice even if they do seem like they’re a few deaths shy of a full fledged disaster. But, the money game is this weekend. Florida must fall. Has to, has to, has to. That is all there really is to it. Let’s not even discuss what might be discussed if this doesn’t happen. It just must. Florida is reeling. They’ve lost three games in a row. Mississippi State beat them at their home. Something as simple as the quarterback-center exchange has

happened Saturday night. The Dawgs pounced on the Wildcats and turned three early turnovers into a 28-3 lead. Three touchdowns were traded before our opponent found a bit of life and scored two touchdowns to our field goal making the game seem closer than it should have. This isn’t a game the defense can claim as a “finish. And, the third down defense is bordering on atrocious. Let’s not make a habit out of surrendering 423 yards. The opposing side won’t always be so generous to continue turning the ball over. The offense had the best running game of the year behind the workhorse aforementioned and Aaron Murray proved he can sit back and lead a steady attack that doesn’t much involve him. Fortyfour points is a big number in the SEC. It doesn’t matter the foe. This is a job well done. Without regard to this fairly well played game (pardon us for not spending a ton of time on this game, it’s still Kentucky and that only gets us so juiced, ya know?)

turned into a fire drill. They have to fall. Sure, they have a week off. So what? They aren’t the Florida we’ve known in the recent past. Make no mistake of their talent. They absolutely have a large group of very good football players on their side. They’ve lost some coaches but still have Urban Meyer. We don’t really care. For that matter, there really isn’t a whole lot we feel like breaking down in this column. Stats have been reviewed. Debates have taken place from every angle. Some of us true Dawgs have cussed other true Dawgs. Other true Dawgs have hung in there calm. Plenty have been willing to give analysis. Though, it really all sounds similar. We have players. They have players. This guy does this and that guy does that. Whatever. It’s all just conversation. Blah, blah, blah. This game is the reason we play. There’s a lot riding on this. There ain’t a whole lot left. It has to go down in Jacksonville. No excuses. Get it done. Go Dawgs!
