The Publisher Cheri Leavy There is such a wonderful bond between Athens and the Golden Isles of Georgia. What a reciprocal relationship! Coastal Bulldogs flock to the Classic City for athletic events especially in the fall for football. And of course for music and food and culture too! And Athenians travel south to the beach throughout the year to enjoy surf and sun and sand! Many families own homes in both places. Lots of generations have grown up traveling to the other town all their lives. And over the years many have joined the two towns through matrimony and even a few franchises. The connections are endless. I am proud of Islander and UGA student Lexie Love organizing a fundraiser benefitting the Boys and Girls Club in Athens. The UGA Rec and Leisure Program will host Swing for the Kids on April 10th at the UGA Golf Course designed by Lexie’s father Davis Love, III. You can register for this 18 hole golf tournament by contacting Kacy Jenkins at 706.424.6565 or kmjenks@uga.edu. The grand prize is a golf date with PGA Golf Pro Davis Love, III. (Thanks Dad!) And now that spring has sprung, it finally has hasn’t it? The migration to the beach has begun. How fun to approach Bennie’s Red Barn and see a very decorated WoW Boot Camp car from Clarke County parked in front. We walk in and visit with our Athens’ neighbors Laura and Bobby Wilfong. After we speak to some St. Simons’ friends and are seated, an attractive couple approaches and says, “are you the Bulldawg Illustrated people?” And we met April and Michael Williams of WoW Boot Camp from Athens. It has continued like that for several weeks. The Athens families pouring through town…Catherine and Corky Warner, Eleanor and Alex Sams, Sarah and Tom Ellis, Patti and Ted McWhorter, Gena and Davis Knox, Amanda and John Dufur and Alison and David Abernathy. Familiar Classic City faces abound at the grocery store, the Beachclub and Bubba Garcia’s. Not that you need an excuse to book a trip to the beach but mark your calendar for the SEC Men’s Golf Tournament on St. Simons on April 17th. Coach Haack’s dawgs will need a fan gallery so head on down. The match is at Sea Island Golf Club, Seaside. Vance and I went last year when it was at Frederica Golf Club, a Tom Fazio design, located on the north end of St. Simons Island next to the Sea Island Equestrian Center. It is a beautiful spot to follow along and it was nice at the end to gather on the bank and watch the teams finish. There were plenty of Bulldogs in attendance. And there were Gators and I mean both kinds, our rival and also an alligator! Coach Haack said the alligator was on the bank last year for Adam Mitchell because his shot was sort of in the drink. Seaside Course will be much the same environment with an incredible setting, great golf and a fun intimate feel but add in a spectacular ocean view! And while you are on the coast, play a little golf yourself. Make sure you get some Southern Soul BBQ and a cocktail at Brogens. Don’t miss Jazz in the Park on the lighthouse lawn on Sundays or the freshest seafood in town at Halyards or Crabdaddy’s. Come coast awhile! The EDITOR Ryan Scates Some don’t believe it until the calendar makes it official. For others, the arrival of March Madness or the sound of a cracking baseball bat is reason enough to believe it. Over on Milledge Avenue, you know it’s here with one word: sundresses. No matter your method of meteorology, there is no denying that springtime has arrived in Athens. Though the kudzu is still dormant, a few dozen Diamond Dawgs fans brought life to Kudzu Hill at Foley Field for Georgia’s SEC opening series against Auburn. Also, it was hard to miss the familiar black tarps that lined River Road and Milledge as spring fraternity band party season commenced this past weekend. For your humble correspondent, nothing proclaims the arrival of spring like getting out to the golf course to chase a white ball around the woods for an afternoon. Luckily, the fine folks over at Jackson Spalding Public Relations hosted a media day at the UGA Golf Course in preparation for the Stadion Athens Classic at UGA. The Nationwide Tour event is going to be great for the Athens area, and Stadion is making sure that the event will have plenty of local competing in the field. Sponsors exemptions have been guaranteed to Jay McLuen of Danielsville, UGA grad Paul Claxton and two top performers from the current UGA men’s golf roster. I have to be honest here. When Jud Doherty, president of Stadion, walked to the podium to announce the sponsor’s exemptions, I had to fight to keep my hopes from getting too high. I mean, who wouldn’t want to give a roundabout 11 handicapper who was MVP of his high school golf squad in 2006 a shot at competing with the big boys in May? Well, apparently the powers that be passed me over this year. In a quest to prove my playing abilities to myself, I left the presser at the clubhouse and headed out to the course to post a score that would get Coach Haack and Stadion’s attention. With publishing magnate Vance Leavy as my scorecard attest, I posted a score that was definitely newsworthy. Unfortunately we have to pay the printer by the letter to publish this paper, and my score just took up too much valuable copy space to print here, but if you email me I will send it to you. I already sent it to Coach Haack, and I’m waiting on his invitation to join the Georgia Golf team with bated breath. In the meantime you can find me outside enjoying Athens much-anticipated emergence from winter. Sunshine and outdoor sporting events not only make for great times with friends, but also better quality photos for the paper! Next time you are out and about in Athens be sure to keep a lookout for Bulldawg Illustrated photographers on the prowl for fan photos and profiles. Until next time, enjoy the sunshine and Go Dawgs! Georgia’s royal tennis program enjoyed a milestone weekend from March 12-14 On Friday, the 12th, the Bulldogs, then ranked ninth, trailed No. 6 Kentucky 3-0. The way tennis scoring goes is: one point is awarded for who wins the best of three pro-set (first to eight games by two) doubles matches. Then come six best of three singles matches. It takes four points to win, and a 7-0 makes for a clean sweep. Georgia came storming back to even things with the Wildcats at 3-3, winning a pair of three setters. With the match on the line, Winder native Drake Bernstein, who was fighting the flu, captured the clincher at No. 5 singles in three thrilling sets, rallying from a 5-4 third set deficit to win 7-5. The incredible victory was Georgia’s 70th straight at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. With a perfect Southeastern Conference record and the incredible home winning streak on the line, the Dogs came back on Sunday the 12th to take a thriller from Vanderbilt 4-3. Senior Jamie Hunt had the clinching win at No. 3 singles, emerging victorious 6-5 in the third to extend the Bulldogs Athens victory string to an amazing 71 matches. And for the premier coach in the country, the iconic Manuel Diaz, it was career victory No. 500. Taking over in 1988 for the greatest Bulldog ever, the legendary Magill who won 706 matches, Diaz, an All-American player and assistant for his mentor, has kept Georgia at the top of the collegiate tennis mountaintop in what is one of the great transitions of power in sports annals. Dating back to 1985, when Georgia captured the national championship, the Bulldogs have won six national titles and played for the championship at amazing 13 times. Georgia’s domination of the SEC has been astounding. Since 1971, the Bulldogs have captured the conference crown an amazing 32 times. That mastery continues. In the Bulldogs last 51 duel SEC matches, Georgia has won an incredible 49 times.
What has made the Georgia tennis program so incredibly special is the unique camaraderie and family atmosphere fostered through the tremendous success and unparalleled stability of having only two head coaches for the past 57 years. The 2010 season is a truly special one, as the NCAA championships, for both men and women, return home to Athens. It was Magill who was the pioneer of the team tournament format, which took the sport’s popularity to never before seen heights, and it was Magill who was the driving force behind making Athens the permanent and now semi-permanent home for the event. But for Bulldogs, what makes the 2010 campaign extra special is that it is the 25-year anniversary of the incredible national championship of 1985 – captained by the greatest senior trio of legends in collegiate tennis annals – Michael Pernfors, George Bezecny and Allen Miller. As an indicator of Georgia’s great tennis lineage, two of Bernstein’s youth coaches were Miller and fellow Bulldog legend Wade McGuire. The legacy continues. And oh by the way, Diaz celebrated his birthday on the 16th.

With championship-caliber training facilities, multiple alumni competing on the PGA and LPGA tours and enough SEC Championships to make your head spin, it is hard to ignore the Georgia Golf program. Led by head coaches Chris Haack and Kelly Hester, both the Men’s and Women’s squads are pushing for another SEC Title in 2010. The men claim 27 conference titles while women have 19 SEC trophies on the mantle. Best of all for local Dawg fans, both teams will be competing in local events. Georgia golf fans can see the men’s team in action at the Linger Longer Invitational, held March 26-28 at the Landing course at Reynolds’ Plantation in Greensboro. The women’s team will be hosting the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the UGA Golf Course during the same timeframe. On the men’s side of the program, youth defines the team’s character. The Dawgs only bring one Senior, Hudson Swafford to the lineup in 2010. Only eight men deep, the Dawgs feature three juniors, two sophomores and two freshmen. However, the squad features the third youngest golfer to ever win the Georgia Amateur Championship in Hudson Swafford. The Thomasville Junior was only older than Bobby Jones and Charlie Yates when winning the Georgia Amateur in 2007. Swafford was unable to defend his title from fellow Junior Georgia teammate Russell Henley, who set Georgia Amateur tournament scoring records at 10-under par and 16-under par in 2008 and 2009, respectively. The arrival of the Stadion Athens Classic at UGA to the University Golf Course in April brings an added fold to intrasquad competition for the men’s team in 2010. Presenting sponsor Stadion Money Management has announced that they will provide two sponsor exemptions for the two members of the men’s golf team with the lowest scoring average of 2010. In the event that a Georgia golfer who is not one of the two team scoring leaders wins low medalist honors at the SEC Championship Tournament at the Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club (April 16-18), that golfer will earn an automatic sponsor exemption into the Nationwide Tour event. Concerning the Women’s Squad, Spaniard sensation Marta Silva Samora anchors a Georgia team that is heading into their home tournament off a 7th place finish in the Tiger Wave invitational in New Orleans, Louisiana. Samora is a graduate of teaching guru Hank Haney’s International Junior Golf Academy and has been named by Golf Digest as a “Player you'll know by season's end.” Story by Ryan Scates, photos by Georgia Sports Communications

Gym Dawgs It’s now down to business with SECs on March 27th Rare is the occasion that a first year head coach is burdened with the expectations that come with being a five-time defending national champion. Come to think of it, rare is the occasion that any team, in any sport, is faced with overcoming such high expectations. Such is life for Jay Clark and the Georgia Gym Dogs. On Sunday night, the Gym Dogs’ class of 2010 celebrated Senior Night. Lauren Johnson, Courtney McCool, Marcia Newby, Lauren Sessler and Grace Taylor went out in style to the tune of a 196.800-193.900 win over NC State. It was the girls’ 100th win in a Georgia leotard. Yes, you read that right, 100th. This group of seniors also contributed in a large way to a home winning streak that now spans five seasons, 24 meets, and 34 competitions in Athens. For some perspective, the last time the Gym Dogs lost a competition in Athens, DJ Shockley was Georgia’s starting quarterback. The Gym Dogs’ success is unparalleled, and hardly inconspicuous. With conference rivals like Florida and Alabama tired of playing second fiddle to the Dawgs in national competition, the upcoming SEC Tournament looks to be a great preview of what each team will be bringing to the NCAA Championships. After dropping meets to SEC foes Florida, Alabama and Auburn earlier in the year, the Gym Dogs have bounced back and posted the conference’s highest score of the year, a 197.900 that came against UCLA in early March. SEC powers Alabama and Florida have posted top marks of 197.450 and 197.550, respectively. Perhaps Grace Taylor said it best after the final home meet of the year, “Now that senior day is over it is business. It is no more ‘last times.’ It’s business.” Jay Clark is preaching the same work ethic heading into the postseason, “The gymnastics needs to be the same,” Clark said of the postseason. “We have always said that we want to practice the same way we perform. So now it is time to get in championship mode and start performing like we practice.” If recent meets are any indication, the Gym Dogs’ practices must be looking up. After falling from their preseason number one ranking, the team has climbed back into the top five, sporting a number five ranking headed into the offseason. Alabama is No. 1 with a 197.195 followed by Oklahoma (197.100), UCLA (196.900), Florida (196.850), Georgia (196.690). The SEC Gymnastics Championships are in Jacksonville, Florida on March 27th. Georgia has won sixteen SEC Gymnastics titles.

End of the season banquet on Thursday, April 15 at the Athens Country Club
There is no better way to be a part of the action than to be a member of the UGA Tip-Off Club. The Tip-Off Club is a great place to meet new friends, make business contacts, and support the basketball program and its student-athletes. Membership dues are $100 per person. This individual membership will allow you to attend member’s only events before, during, and after the season.

Hoop Dawgs
Senior Albert Jackson and family with Mark Fox
Fox marks improvement in 2010 When I first met Mark Fox just under a year ago in Albany, Georgia, I had my doubts. Mark Fox was making an appearance alongside Mark Richt at the Albany Bulldog Club Meeting at Doublegate Country Club, to get the good people of Southwest Georgia fired up for a new era in Bulldawg Basketball. At the meeting’s end, the line to get Mark Richt’s autograph stretched around the pro shop and back to the Doublegate putting green. Mark Fox looked on, alone behind some Sharpies and a stack of posters that read “There’s a Fox in the Doghouse!” Seizing the opportunity, I stepped out of line to get Richt’s signature for a chance to talk to what I had penned as the quiet and calculated new basketball coach. With what had become admittedly low personal expectations for the Georgia basketball program, I didn’t expect too much from Fox. What I found when I introduced myself was a genuine guy who seemed consumed with bringing Georgia basketball to the big time. “We’ll see.” I told myself as I began the long drive back to Athens. Flash forward eight months and seeing was believing. The first sign came at the Gwinnett Arena with a three-point victory over Illinois. Next, Fox defended the Streak at Stegeman by defeating Georgia Tech. Here at Bulldawg Illustrated, we were so excited about the Tennessee and Florida wins that we devoted an entire cover to each. By the time Senior Night rolled around, scalpers were fetching more for the Georgia-Kentucky basketball matchup than they were getting for the Georgia-Kentucky football matchup. When the ticket black market starts to boom for Georgia basketball, you can bet that the culture and expectations on South Campus have changed for the better. While Georgia came up short against the Cats at Stegeman that night, the Dawgs were never outcoached. With Coach Fox looking to bring in a strong recruiting class for 2010-2011 and the Athletic Association giving Stegeman Coliseum a facelift, the future looks bright for the Hoop Dawgs. And as for the Albany Bulldawg Club, I am willing to bet the line for Coach Fox’s autograph will stretch at least to the tennis courts this year. story and photos by Ryan Scates
