The Publisher Vance Leavy It’s hard to believe, but many of Georgia’s sports beyond the hedges have already concluded or will so over the next month. It’s amazing how quick 2010 is zipping by. It seems like it was just yesterday, when BI Athens editor, Ryan Scates and I began formulating a plan to produce 11 issues every other week from January to June. Now in a flash when I complete this article, Issue 7 will be put to bed, which means there are only four more in our inaugural year. Much like our previous issues, we have spotlighted the UGA sport that has something big in the horizon, for this issue. Anyone who has traveled on Lumpkin this past year has surely noticed the extensive renovations at the Spec Towns Track. I love how the track and the other UGA sports facilities combine for a perfect viewing landscape as you’re heading north towards downtown. Obviously the track is meant for much more than a spectacular view. It is where UGA track and field athletes hone in on their perspective talents. The UGA track was always nice, but it now has all the bells and whistles that will only help the entire program grow. After months of waiting, the UGA team gets to show off both its facility and its athleticism this weekend in the Spec Towns Invitational. To my right, Ryan does a great job of telling you exactly who Spec Towns was, while also catching you up on UGA’s current track superstar, Torrin Lawrence. And on page 6, Chelsea Lipocky discusses how she thinks track is one of the most under-rated spectator sports at Georgia. And she reminds us that the Spec Towns Track is one of the few UGA facilities that can be used by the public. It should be an exciting time this weekend for the track and field team members. If you’re heading to the G-Day game or going to watch the Diamond Dogs take on Ole Miss make a little extra time to lend some support to Coach Wayne Norton, his staff and their amazing student-athletes. Since I just mentioned the Diamond Dogs, let me echo Jeff Dantzler (page 4) by saying not to give up on Coach Perno’s boys just yet. Yes the start has been brutal, but hopefully our pitchers are finally shaking their terrible case of Walk Syndrome. By eliminating that combined with some hot bats, there’s absolutely no reason this team can’t get back into the mix on both the SEC and national scene. The beauty of a long season is there is time to right the ship. And knowing David Perno, without question, the message has been sent loud and clear the TIME IS NOW to start producing. Finally I would like to end with a reminder that Georgia’s gymnastics, equestrian and golf teams are either in or about to enter the postseason and would love your support. Check out our sports calendar on page 11 and get out in this beautiful weather and support our much beloved Dawgs.

The EDITOR Ryan Scates When sitting down to write this issue’s editor’s note, it dawned on me that this week marks my one-year anniversary of working for Bulldawg Illustrated. And to be perfectly honest, one year ago I could have never imagined what a rewarding experience I was in for.Over the past year this publication has taken me to places I had previously only dreamed about. From the sideline at Sanford Stadium to the baseline at Stegeman Coliseum and everywhere in between, I have been truly blessed to get to cover an institution in Georgia athletics that means so much to so many. And with a full year of covering UGA Sports under my belt, I can confidently say that there is maybe no better time of year to soak in some Georgia sports than right now while spring is in full swing. Aside from the obvious upcoming sporting events in our region such as the Masters and G Day, there are plenty of great opportunities to get outside and see some of the nation’s best collegiate athletes compete right here in Athens. The baseball team is preparing to host homestands against Clemson, Georgia Tech and Ole Miss while the Women’s Tennis squad hosts Florida before gearing up for the SEC Championship Tournament, which is slated to be held April 23-25th right here in Athens. The Georgia Golf Team is preparing to defend its conference title at the SEC Golf Championships at Sea Island on Friday, April 16-18. Coming off a strong performance in Greensboro at the Linger Longer invitational, don’t be surprised to see the Dawgs bring home what could be their 28th SEC Championship under the live oaks down in Glynn County. Perhaps the most anticipated event coming to Athens this spring, however, is the Spec Towns Invitational. Debuting a brand new, state of the art facility, the Georgia Track program is primed to shine in their opening home competition of this season. Between admiring the new track, field, landscaping and spectator areas, be sure to keep an eye on Torrin Lawrence, who is quite possibly one of the fastest men on the continent. Lawrence has been named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Male Track Athlete of the Year for the 2009-2010 season, and is the first member in the history of the Bulldog men’s program to be named a national athlete of the year. At the NCAA Indoor Championships, which were in Fayetteville in March, Lawrence clocked the second-fastest time in an NCAA indoor final in history (45.23) to win Georgia’s third national indoor championship and its first since 2001. The sophomore from Jacksonville has track Dawgs buzzing unlike they have since back in 1933, when an Augusta boy was given a track scholarship to UGA after a sports reporter saw him high jumping in his backyard. The Richmond County hurdles specialist went onto win the NCAA and AAU titles in 120 yard hurdles in 1935 before becoming the first Georgian to ever be named to the US Olympic team in 1936. The phenom athlete went onto win the gold medal in the Berlin Olympic Games and set a world record for the 120-yard hurdle event that would stand for 14 years. (13.7 Sec.) After joining the US Army in World War II, the now legendary Forrest “Spec” Towns returned to Athens and coached the UGA Track team until 1975. The Spec Towns Invitational is held annually in his honor, and the 2010 edition begins April 9th at the UGA Track. I hope to see you there!

An uncommon rash of injuries took its toll on youthful Georgia, and the Bulldogs look toward the second half of the season with a serious mountain to climb in the hopes of achieving the goal of an unprecedented third consecutive NCAA Regional appearance. Making it to suburban Birmingham for the eight-team Southeastern Conference tournament will take some moving for the Dogs, but it can be done. As long as David Perno is Georgia’s coach, there is great cause for optimism. After all, he’s led the Bulldogs to three College World Series appearances over a five year stretch, a pair of Southeastern Conference championships and five of the program’s 10 all – time NCAA berths. When the Bulldogs had their two most disappointing seasons of the 2000s, in ’03 and ’07, Georgia responded with magical runs to Omaha the following year. And with a line-up comprised entirely of freshmen and sophomores, some young arms, and a standout crop of prospects lined up, the Bulldogs figure to be back to the elite in short order. And that optimism doesn’t extend just to next year. The Bulldogs have far from kicked dirt on the 2010 campaign. Amongst those reasons for optimism: Georgia’s middle infield is finally healthy, with freshman shortstop Kyle Farmer and sophomore second baseman Levi Hyams giving the Bulldogs a top flight combination with a high ceiling. After suffering through a series of big-margin losses, the Dogs closed the gap once Farmer and Hyams came back. The signature moment of the SEC three weeks in was a 126 Game Two win at LSU in which both finished a triple shy of the cycle. Over an 11-game period prior to the April 3rd win in Baton Rouge, the Bulldogs suffered a painful seven one-run losses. After a week in which the badly-injured Bulldogs were beaten soundly several times by big numbers, the club got very competitive. But over the first three weeks of conference play, Georgia suffered four of those onerun setbacks. The bats came alive (Zach Cone left Baton Rouge with a
season best 17-game hitting streak and ranked in the top ten in the league in both batting and slugging) and the starting pitching took big steps forward on road trips to Starkville and Baton Rouge. So what’s the reason for optimism with those one-run losses? The baseball gods tend to even those things out. And as Georgia continues to grow, maybe, just maybe, some magic awaits. While a couple of relievers have had a tough go of things, a group of veterans and newcomers both have begun to shoulder some of the bullpen load. The bullpen has been Georgia’s biggest nemesis at times, especially at Mississippi State, where a pair of substantial late-inning leads got away. Amongst the relievers who have given the Bulldogs some quality outings are senior Steve Esmonde and freshman Cooper Moseley. Georgia’s starting rotation could be ready to peak. Junior Justin Grimm has given the Bulldogs three solid outings, while sophomore Michael Pallazone shined in Starkville, and senior Jeff Walters notched the victory in Baton Rouge. Under Perno’s watch, the Bulldogs have traditionally been strong closers while playing schedules consistently ranked amongst the toughest in the country. This April stretch, which began with the three-game series at fourth-ranked defending national champion LSU (a series that pitted the SEC’s two premier programs of the 2000’s), is college baseball’s toughest. Also on the April docket are contests with top 20 foes Clemson, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Tech, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. Without question, the Bulldogs will know where they stand come May. If Georgia can hold its own in April, then the Dogs will have a shot at one of those lateseason post-season pushes. If not, a strong finish could still be in the cards, which would help set the table for what has the promised to be an outstanding campaign in 2011. Either way it slices, this April schedule will test and strengthen the Bulldogs for a bright future – one that could shine as early as right now in the second half of 2010.

To me, track is one of the most underrated spectator sports here at the university. The weather is beautiful, the athletes have winning records, and the track is new. The multi-million dollar renovation to the Spec Towns Track has made the perfectly located area even better. The track, named after former track and field legend and Olympic gold medalist Forrest “Spec Towns, has been completely re-surfaced. The wear and tear of athletes and the public using the track made the renovation necessary. The track hasn’t been refurbished since 1986, and the time had come. The great thing about the track, is that it is not only used for home meets in the spring. Athens-area locals, students and faculty all use the track as a safe place to exercise and enjoy the outdoors. How often can you toss around the football in Sanford Stadium? Or play H-O-R-S-E in Stegeman Coliseum? Probably never. Night joggers and exercising students have been eagerly awaiting the completion of the track. Of course, the most important users of the space are the track and field athletes. Initially, there seems to be a lot of athletes, and events, to keep up with. Once you get familiar with the different events, and the skills and talent it takes to do them, track meets become an intricate mix of speed, strength and determination. The 2010 season is already underway, and the latest match up with instate rival Georgia Tech resulted with another win for the men and a tie for the women’s team.
There are so many standouts on the team, there is always someone to cheer for. And with multiple SEC weekly awards, personal records and rivalry duels, the track is where the action is this spring. And it has been for a long time. These games have their roots in a deep history of competition. Track and field events date back to 776 BC, with the first Olympic events. In 2010, the tradition continues, and our Bulldawgs travel around the country competing. Another tradition carried out at the track is hosting the Relay For Life event. UGA was the first university to host its own event, and the organization is still breaking records. The first UGA Relay was in 2000, and since then has been one of the largest and most successful Relays in world. This year, Relay For Life will be April 23rd from seven at night, until seven the next morning. Relay is very grateful to be able to use the UGA track, as it is a big part of the event’s success. Having the UGA Relay For Life event at the track is crucial to making sure the night thrives. Because we have over 2,700 participants as of now, with that number expected to grow, having the location on the middle of campus is perfect for students. They can walk from their dorm or apartment and spend the night in the middle of campus, having fun and raising money to cure cancer! I can’t wait for the first home track meet on April 9th, and the Relay event later in the month.
Meet Brittlan Wall, Equestrian
Major: Biology/ Pre-Med Year: Freshman Hometown: Suwanee, GA Favorite part about being on the Equestrian team: Being able to represent the University doing something that I love. How hard is it to juggle school and riding? At first it was difficult because I was trying to get acclimated to college life in general, much less college athletics. But after a few months things got much easier, and it really isn't too difficult to balance the two as long as I stay focused on my schedule during the week. Favorite place to eat in Athens: Yoguri and Mellow Mushroom What you miss most from home: My family. Luckily I only live an hour away so I can see them whenever I want. Favorite kind of music: Rap/Hip-Hop. Best memory at UGA so far: Singing karaoke at Shokitini for a teammates birthday. Beating Auburn and South Carolina at the end of our regular season was pretty great too! What you like to do in your free time: Photography, hanging out with friends, working out.

The eighth-ranked Georgia team got wins from three of its seniors to close out a 52 victory over No. 16 Ole Miss. The victory was fittingly the 100th for the senior class in their Bulldog careers, as the foursome of Alex Hill, Jamie Hunt, Nate Schnugg, and Christian Vitulli was honored between doubles and singles. That group is now 10011 since arriving in Athens in 2007. photos by Ryan Scates, track and UGA sports communications

Lady Dawgs
Coach Andy Landers will certainly miss seniors Ashley Houts, Angel Robinson and Christy Marshall, who gave their heart and soul to the Lady Dogs’ program.
A sweet 16 year isn’t too shabby With another NCAA basketball season in the rearview mirror, a short reflection is in order. Anyone who follows Georgia sports beyond football is surely familiar with one Andy Landers, Georgia women’s head basketball coach extraordinaire for 31 years. Back in 1979, Landers was Vince Dooley’s first hire as newly appointed Athletic Director. Over three decades and 700 wins later, Landers is still competing at the top of his game, as evidenced by this year’s record setting 16-0 start and run to the Sweet 16. The 2009-2010 edition of Landers’ Lady Dogs was characterized by youth. The roster featured only three seniors, but six freshmen. After getting off to a school recordsetting start, underclassmen began to find their niche when senior leaders Ashley Houts and Angel Robinson were limited due to injury. Jasmine James, a freshman from Memphis, made a name for herself staring down three pointers and setting a conference record for earning SEC Freshman Player of the Week honors five times. Whenever a women’s basketball squad makes it through out-of-conference play unbeaten, that team’s potential for greatness is pretty clear. But this year, old Dawgs had to know that Andy Landers had a quality team from the very first game of the season. The Lady Dogs opened the 2009-2010 campaign with an impressive 62-51 victory over 2009 Final Four squad Oklahoma. Landers, in typical fashion, wasted no time dismissing any premature thoughts of how good his squad might be. “It was a big win, and we’re excited about that,” Landers said. “Now we need to get over it and move on.” They moved on to win 17 of their next 18 games, including a landmark 53-50 victory over traditional rival Tennessee. Watching two titans of collegiate basketball in Coach Landers and Pat Summitt go head to head in a game that came down to the final five seconds was one of the highlights of covering Georgia sports this year. After the game, even Landers couldn’t help but muster a smile. “This game was a lot of fun,” explained the coach, “and I am really appreciative to all the people that came out and enjoyed themselves." Coach, anytime you want to beat Tennessee, we are all too happy to oblige. Of course, the Landers’ ladies went on to post a 25-9 record for the season. The last win came in Tempe, Arizona, and was a gut-wrenching overtime game against Oklahoma State and ball-hog Andrea Riley. Jasmine James lit up the scoreboard for a career high 27 points to put the Dawgs in the Sweet 16 for the 18th time. Not too shabby. With a stellar recruiting class that includes McDonald’s All-American Ronika Ransford coming down the pipe, don’t look for the Andy Landers basketball machine to be slowing down anytime soon. In his 32nd year at the helm, Andy Landers may just be getting started. story and photos by Ryan Scates

Diamond Dawgs UGA-Tech rivalry one of the best Georgia’s baseball rivalry with Georgia Tech has undoubtedly emerged as one of the best in the country. These two long-time instate foes, through this past decade’s advent of the Regional and Super-Regional format and the annual affair at Turner Field that draws monster crowds, have given this rivalry extra flair that few – if any – can match. Beginning with Georgia’s story-book run to the 2001 College World Series and Southeastern Conference championship, and escalating under the remarkably successful David Perno era, Georgia’s baseball program has gone from 1990s league cellar-dwellar to one of the nation’s elite programs of the 2000s. For the past 25 years, Georgia Tech has been one of the best teams in the country. The Bulldogs had their moments, highlighted by a 1987 Regional win at Tech that sent Georgia to its first College World Series, and the 1990 national championship. But after reaching the summit in 1990, the Bulldogs went through a decade in the dregs, while the Jackets flourished, first under Jim Morris and then (and now) with Danny Hall. There was no question who the best program in the state was. In fact, Georgia didn’t have much of a case with Georgia Southern who had the second best peach state program. But all of that changed in 2000 when Ron Polk arrived in Athens and kept on assistant David Perno. En route to Omaha in 2001, the Bulldogs beat Tech in the Athens Regional and one of the biggest rivalries in college baseball would be ignited. When Polk returned to Mississippi State, Perno was (after a six week search) named the Bulldogs head coach. The Athens native and Bulldog alum has led the Bulldogs to three College World Series, two SEC titles and five of the ten NCAA appearances in school history. The Yellow Jackets have also remained a constant in post-season play. But through the 2000s, the Bulldogs have enjoyed more postseason glory, and two of the grandest moments have come at Tech’s expense. Georgia’s aforementioned Athens Regional Championship in 2001 featured an elimination game victory over Tech that kept the Bulldogs alive. Jeff Keppinger then produced his unprecedented dramatics and Georgia would roll to the College World Series. A year later at the Atlanta Regional, the Yellow Jackets bested the Bulldogs in a pair of white-knucklers to move on to the Super-Regional. But since 2003, Georgia has controlled the rivalry. Prior to that season, representatives of the Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital approached the schools and coaches about playing an annual game at Turner Field. With the new Regional and Super format, and the likelihood, with the added incentive from the
NCAA of drawing monster crowds and producing super-charged atmospheres by pitting rivals, that the Dogs and Jackets would continue to be frequent postseason foes, the Turner Field game was a win all the way around. It provided the two programs the opportunity to be involved with a great charity. The game put the Bulldogs and Yellow Jackets on a national stage, as the game drew two of the four largest crowds in NCAA baseball history. And, with the rugged SEC and ACC slates, it made the scheduling easier for the two coaches. There would be a game on Tech’s campus, a game in Athens and the game at Turner Field. Georgia won the inaugural Scottish Rite game and has gone 6-1 against the Jackets in the event. Since 2003, Georgia has won the season series five times, and twice through rainouts the two national powers have split. It is the postseasons of 2004 and 2008 where the Bulldogs produced their biggest ever diamond victories over the Jackets. Unfairly in ’04, the SEC champs played the ACC champs in the Super-Regional in Atlanta. The Dogs swept the two-game set from the Yellow Jackets with heroics from Johnathan Wyatt and Will Startup to advance to the College World Series in Perno’s third year. Both the Bulldogs and Tech were national seeds in 2006, and did not meet in a Regional or Super. Both wound up in Omaha. In 2008, SEC champion Georgia was on the ropes, fighting through the losers bracket in the Athens Regional. But the Bulldogs, with Tech needing only one win, steamrolled to 80 and 18-6 victories with a large cast of hero’s including Nick Montgomery and Will Harvill. The Bulldogs would then win the Super Regional and advance to the finals of the College World Series. A third Omaha trip over that span put Georgia in an elite group of just six teams – including Texas, Fullerton, Oregon State, North Carolina and Miami – to make it to the CWS so frequently. Perno joined an elite group of just 12 coaches to make three Omaha appearances in his first seven years. While there is such genuine hatred between the schools on the gridiron, the talent in the state is such, the familiarity between the players (in-state players make up a vast majority of both rosters) is so widespread, the great success rate of the teams and coaches, and the continued explosion of college baseball’s popularity have made it so that Georgia and Georgia Tech can have an intense, healthy rivalry, while both can be highly successful on a national level. Both teams want to beat the other very badly, but for the continued betterment of the great game and the classic rivalry, it’s great that both have been so good – and for the red and black, extra sweet that of late, the Bulldogs have been a little bit better. story by Jeff Dantzler, photos by Ryan Scates
