Athens
The Publisher Cheri Leavy It feels like we are having a grand slam tournament this year with the NCAA Championship being hosted by Athens on the 25th Anniversary of the 1985 team winning its national title. For those of you visiting Athens for the NCAAs we welcome you to the classic city. If you are looking for food and libation and shopping in Athens while you are here, guide2athens has the best of Athens spotlighted so visit www.athens.guide2s.com or guide athens look around town and pick up a copy of the little black book. On page 15, I make a few suggestions of where to frolic but if you are here for the tennis, you should not miss the Intercollegiate Tennis Hall of Fame located at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex . Our editor Ryan Scates shares a visit he had with curator of the Hall of Fame and legendary Bulldog, Coach Magill, and then he makes suggestions of what you must see in the Hall of Fame on page 6. It houses over 800 photographs and murals honoring past collegiate players and coaches. You can view memorabilia and artifacts that date to the 1800s including the first tennis rulebook used in the country in1879. I hope you are lucky enough to meet Dan Magill, the curator, when you visit as he is absolutely the best treasure in the entire Hall of Fame. Ryan also got a video of him chatting that you can enjoy at BulldawgIllustrated.com. Our cover spotlights the trio of coaches Jeff Wallace, Dan Magill and Manny Diaz, who have served up decades of championship winning tennis at The University of Georgia. I was talking to a friend recently about what a family the former tennis teams make as a whole. Players from multiple teams all get together to watch the Dawgs’ current matches but also on football gamedays and weddings. It is a tribute to the community the coaches on the cover have created and nurtured. And it is probably another reason when the NCAAs have been held in Athens, they draw some of the largest crowds. Our sports guru on staff, Jeff Dantzler, is no stranger to this great group of guys that spans several generations of UGA tennis. He counts many as his dearest friends and future groomsmen and Coach Magill is his most beloved mentor. He has been talking about these guys coming to town for a reunion at the NCAAs for months. And he does a great job giving accolades to the 1985 national champs in his column on page 4. We are all fortunate to get the opportunity to attend a Bulldawg Bites where some of the 1985 National Championship team will be holding court. Come enjoy a guest speaker panel of former UGA All American tennis greats Coach Dan Magill, Allen Miller, Mikael Pernfors and George Bezecny on this Friday, May 21st. The doors at The Foundry Ballroom will open at 7:30 a.m. for business and bulldog networking with an incredible breakfast spread and the sports talk starting at 8 o’clock. Tickets are available in advance at www.meltingpointathens.com for $8 or $10 at the door. I hope the 25th Anniversary gives the 2010 dawgs the advantage!

With another round of finals and graduation complete, Athens seems to be taking a collective sigh of relief as 20,000 students have vacated the classic city for the summer. Traffic is light, there is no wait at restaurants downtown, and “for rentâ€? signs are spreading like weeds in preparation for August. While summer brings a leisurely change of pace to most Athenians, as the heat rises on campus so does the pressure at the University’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The next two weeks bring the return of the NCAA Men’ and Women’s Tennis Championships to the “Mecca of Collegiate Tennisâ€?, Athens, Georgia. We have prepared a special issue of Bulldawg Illustrated Athens to serve as a spectator’s guide to the tournament, and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed putting it together. One of the most anticipated events of the tournament will be the induction of new members to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Hall of Fame, which is located right here in Athens. “Each year we put in five or ten great players from the pastâ€? explained Dan Magill, Hall of Fame Curator and Chairman of the Hall of Fame committee. “This year we will have the new members here for a ceremony May 26th, where they will get an award and a green Masters-type coat.â€? This year, former UGA standout and current Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of the USTA Gordon Smith will be enshrined in the ITA Hall of Fame. “Gordon was from Rome, about 6 foot five, a left hander. He graduated in journalism, he also went on and later got a degree in law (also from UGA)‌.and he became recognized as the most outstanding trial lawyer in the Unites States.’ “But he always was associated with tennis in some way‌and after he retired as a lawyer, the United States Tennis Association asked him to be their Chief Operating Officerâ€? explains Magill, who coached Smith when he was roommates at Georgia with current UGA head tennis coach Manuel Diaz. I had a chance to sit at Smith’s table when he was inducted to the Grady Fellowship this past November. As a nervous future law student at UGA, I had plenty to ask this giant of the Georgia legal scene before I was even aware he was in charge of the USTA as well. For a man of such incredible accomplishments, he was more than patient with all of my annoying questions and requests for advice. With the Georgia men’s team and women Bulldawg standouts Chelsea Gullickson and Nadja Gilchrist competing for NCAA titles, the atmosphere at the 2010 NCAA Championship is sure to be electric. As Coach Diaz told me this week, “The thing that makes Athens unique is the crowds.â€? Let’s live up to our reputation and show up loud and barking for the 2010 tournament. Go Dawgs, and see you at the Mecca of Collegiate Tennis! Sales Associates: Kelley Blanton Andrew Miller Holly Stanfill Michael Santos

It was 25 years ago when the proud University of Georgia tennis team hit the highest of highs, christened the grandest of careers, and set the table for the Bulldogs to become the premier program in the land – all behind the greatest senior class in the sport’s history. No program in any sport at any school in America has enjoyed the incredible sustained success that Georgia tennis has over the past half century-plus. With only two coaches since 1953, the stability and excellence of Georgia tennis is unparalleled. The Greatest Georgia Bulldog ever Dan Magill, while also serving as director of the Bulldog Clubs, Sports Information Director and barnstorming promoter nonparallel carved out the most wins of any coach in college tennis history. In a transition of power leading to continued greatness rivaling Dimaggio’s passing of the Yankees centerfield torch to Mantle and Young taking over behind center for Montana in San Francisco, Magill’s assistant and handpicked successor Manuel Diaz kept the locomotive steamrolling to championships. Since 1971, Georgia has won an astounding 25 Southeastern Conference championships. The highlight of the Bulldogs reign came from 1985-2008, when the Bulldogs captured six national titles and played in the NCAA Championship Finals an incredible 13 times in 24 years. It is fitting that the tournament is back in Athens for the silver anniversary of that first national championship team – one that came together and delivered a powerhouse performance behind a remarkable group of seniors. The top three spots in the Georgia lineup were filled by Mikael Pernfors, George Bezecny and Allen Miller, all members of various UGA, collegiate tennis, and state Halls of Fame. All were amongst the greatest athletes to ever play at Georgia and all have gone on to highly successful careers in and around the game. Pernfors followed up the national championship by winning the NCAA singles title for a second consecutive year, becoming the first player since Dennis Ralston at SMU two years earlier to accomplish this incredible feat. In fact, the next player to compete in two straight finals was Georgia’s Wade McGuire in 1992 and 1993. The next player to win two straight individual national championships was Georgia’s Matias Boeker in 2001 and 2002. Pernfors is a member of the college tennis hall of fame, the state of Georgia tennis hall of fame and center court at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex is named for him. Pernfors went on to a
highly successful pro career, highlighted by a run to the finals of the 1986 French Open. In his senior year, Pernfors went 723, and in the NCAA final, he defeated his roommate – Bezecny. “Gorgeous George won 42 of his final 43 matches heading into the singles final, most notably, an incredible victory in the team final when Bezecny overcame agonizing pain from an injured knee to notch a critical win in the triumph over UCLA. A member of UGA’s Circle of Honor as one of the most distinguished athletes in Bulldog annals, the three-time All-American is amongst a small group of players who has captured a team national championship and played an individual title. Bezecny also has gone on to a stellar career in the game. He is currently the head pro at the Fisher Island Club in Miami. Miller is the first ever four time AllAmerican in University of Georgia athletic history. A member of the College Tennis Hall of Fame, the Circle of Honor and state of Georgia tennis hall of fame, this lifelong Bulldog love literally got to live the dream of delivering a national championship to his beloved alma mater. As a sophomore in 1983, Miller teamed with Ola Malmqvist to win the NCAA Doubles Championship – joining the aforementioned elite group to win a team title and play for an individual championship. Miller and Pernfors wound up the 1985 season as the No. 1 ranked doubles team as well. The greatest senior class ever had another member, All-SEC standout Deane Frey, who enjoyed a stellar career. The No. 5 player, who had the clinching point in the victory over UCLA, was Philip Johnson, one of the great players in Bulldog history. Johnson moved to the No. 1 spot the next two years and went undefeated in SEC duel play. He led the Bulldogs to the 1987 national championship in Magill’s next-to-last season at the helm. Freshman Trey Carter was a standout in the No. 6 spot, and joined Johnson in becoming the first Bulldog to win two team national championships. These extraordinary Bulldogs, who’s class, popularity and success in their personal and professional lives dwarfs their incredible success for Georgia tennis, has great cause for celebration on the 25-year anniversary of the grand championship. That team photo – Magill, Diaz, Pernfors, Bezecny, Miller, Frey, Johnson and Carter – features nothing but the best, highlighted by two of the greatest coaches in the sport’s history and the best senior class in college tennis annals.
NCAA TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Athens one of the top destinations to host some of America’s top-ranked players A lot has changed since Athens hosted its first NCAA Tennis Championship in 1972. For instance, the Billboard top 20 featured songs such as America’s Horse With No Name and Neil Young’s Heart of Gold. In 1972 the Watergate Scandal broke loose, a gallon of gas cost 55 cents and crowds were raving about the new Francis Ford Coppola film, The Godfather. In 1972, the Georgia tennis team featured a freshman hotshot tennis player from San Juan, Puerto Rico named Manuel Diaz. 37 years later, the Puerto Rican has reached legendary status in the collegiate tennis world and currently serves as the head coach of Georgia’s storied men’s tennis program. Despite all of his successes over the past four decades, which include a .831 winning percentage over 21 seasons as a head coach, coaching Georgia to 12 SEC Championships and four NCAA Tennis Championships, and being selected as the Wilson/ITA National Coach-of-the Year in 1995, 2001 and 2007, Coach Diaz can remember playing in that 1972 Athens Tournament like it was yesterday. “The first time we hosted the NCAAs in 1972,” remembers Diaz, “I was a freshman and competed in that event. It was the first time we had scoreboards on every court and we had
chairs on every court…The crowds were monstrous.” While the tournament committee had already settled on sites for the tournament through 1976, the NCAA was so impressed with Athens that the University became the “semi-permanent” home of the tournament beginning in 1977. Georgia hosted the NCAAs 13 years in a row from 1977-89 before the tournament left for Southern California in 1990. “It was a phenomenal setting…for a round of golf,” said Diaz, “I think the tournament committee saw that it was a great setting for a professional event, but it didn’t compare to Athens for the NCAAs.” Since 1990, Athens has hosted the event 11 more times. Diaz gives tremendous credit to living legend Dan Magill for the event’s success in Athens. “Coach Magill was so instrumental in getting such great support for the event,” said Diaz. This week’s NCAA Championships will mark the 22nd time the national championship will be decided in the classic city. “We aren’t trying to corner the tournament, but we are available and willing to host,” explained Diaz. The event returns to Athens in 2012 after heading to Palo Alto, California in 2011. “It’s just a great treat for the University to have an event of this magnitude in our own backyard,” said Diaz. It provides a
great deal of recognition to the University and the fact that the committee continues to choose Athens for a tournament site is a tribute to the University and Athens as a whole.” Studs to Win NCAA Championships in Athens John McEnroe Former World Number One Tennis player, Three Wimbeldon Titles, Four US Open Titles. Won NCAA Singles Title as a Freshman in 1978 playing for Stanford. John Isner Current second-ranked American tennis player was standout at Georgia from 2004-2007. Won the 2005 doubles crown with partner Antonio Ruiz at Baylor and led UGA to the 2007 team championship in Athens. Kevin Curren Went on to win the 1982 US Open Doubles Title in New York after winning the 1975 singles NCAA title in Athens playing for the University of Texas. story by Ryan Scates, photos by ITA Collegiate Hall of Fame and Georgia Sports Communications

Dan Magill’s five must sees at the ITA Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame To call Dan Magill a living legend may be somewhat of an understatement. When I went to get some photos and check out the ITA Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame located in the complex with his namesake, you can imagine how surprised I was to find Coach Magill sitting behind a desk, ready and willing to give a personal tour of the facility. Below I have included five of my favorite highlights from the Hall of Fame, and we have the full video of the tour ready for viewing at BulldawgIllustrated.com 1. The Rogers Family Picture Magill- “Kenny Rogers wanted to make a donation to the Georgia Tennis program. I told him we were trying to raise the money to build a tennis hall of fame, well he ended up paying the whole amount‌.I thought he’d give about five or ten thousand dollars, but he paid the whole amount, $200,000.â€? 2. The Exhaustive Tennis Racquet Collection Magill- “We have the same model racket used by every national collegiate
tennis champ in singles and doubles since the very first one in 1883...We have 103 racquets that were actually used by the guys when they won. 3. The Women’s Tennis Exhibit Magill- “I have pictures of all the women’s champions, and I thought the appropriate spot for them would be back here by the ladies room...but their Hall of Fame is at William and Mary. 4. The NCAA Tennis Championships Program Collection Being the original UGA Sports Information Director, Magill has been sure to keep copies of every NCAA Tennis Championship Program dating back for decades 5. The “Standing Ovation Photograph Magill- “This is the biggest crowd that ever saw an intercollegiate tennis match anywhere in the world. 5200 screaming fans are pictured here the day we first won the tournament in 1985. compiled by Ryan Scates

It’s good to be the Mecca of College Tennis. The Athens heat, the thunderous crowd, and an avalanche of barking mad Georgia fans have characterized the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships for 22 of the past 38 years, making UGA the semipermanent home of the most prestigious event in college tennis. Bulldawg Illustrated had a chance to catch up with Head Men’s Tennis Coach Manuel Diaz to get a quick insider’s perspective on what to watch for as competition heats up on South Campus. In the singles tournament, who are the major contenders for the NCAA title this year? Well, there are a lot of talented players in the field, and any of the top 10 players is capable of winning the title. Some players to watch are Henrique Cunha from Duke (5’10’’ Freshman, Brazil), JP Smith at Tennessee (6’2’’ Junior, Australia), Oleksandr Nedovyesov from Oklahoma State (6’3’’ Senior, Ukraine), Steve Johnson from Southern California (6’4’’, Sophomore, Orange, CA) and Chase Buchanan at Ohio State (6’2, Sophomore, New Albany, Ohio) Who are the teams to watch for in the team tournament? Well, You have gotta say Virginia and Tennessee, who have great years and probably go into this tournament as the favorites. But, there are probably another four teams that could beat anyone in the field, its just a matter of if they can put four matches together. That is the big challenge in a tournament like this. compiled by Ryan Scates
Coach Jeff Wallace on the women While the Dan Magill Tennis Complex has played host to the Men’s NCAA Tournament 22 times, 2010 marks only the fifth time the women’s tournament will be held in Athens. Bulldawg Illustrated had a chance to catch up with Georgia head women’s tennis coach Jeff Wallace before practice Monday to get some insight on what hosting the tournament means to the program and who to keep an eye out for on the court. Speak a little about some teams to watch out for in the 2010 I mean, obviously you have got to take a look at Baylor, being the #1 seed. I would say North Carolina has had one of the best years that they have ever had, and then you have Florida who won the SEC Championship, so I think that they are a dangerous team as well. But I think that any of the 16 teams coming in feel that this is a year where anything can happen, so I think that everyone has a game plan to come in here and win this. How does hosting the NCAA’s impact the Georgia Tennis program? Well, it’s just a great facility, I mean, it’s the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, “The Mecca of College Tennis, so it’s a great place for all of these teams to come, and I think everyone enjoys coming to Athens and spending time in this facility. And within our community we have a great college town, so it’s neat to have the biggest tournament in all of college tennis here on campus. On the singles side of things, who are some players that fans should follow closely? Obviously you have Chelsea (Gullickson) and Nadja (Gilchrist) who are two Georgia players who are going to be playing, so we certainly want the fans to come out and support them. Georgia Tech has the #1 player in the country in Irina Falconi. You know, again I feel like it’s a bit like the team tournament in that there are a lot of players who feel like “I can put a good week together and win this thing. I think in doubles it’s kind of the same thing. Nadja and Chelsea have put together a great tournament and a great season in doubles, but again I feel like there are 15 teams at least who feel like on a given week they can win the tournament. I feel like the fans should really keep an eye out for everybody in this event.

“Totally unexpected is the only way I can describe it. I was used to the ‘big bank’, used to being an account and only recognized with proper identification. Then I switched to First American. They said they were different and I said, ‘of course you are’. Now I’m a homeowner, expanding my business to a new location, and ‘they’ know me by my first name.
