The Publisher Cheri Leavy My husband Vance’s family trade has put ink in my blood. He is fourth generation of the fourth estate, print journalism. And we already bled Red and Black, so our endeavor into publishing Bulldawg Illustrated has truly been a labor of love. When we created Bulldawg Illustrated nine years ago I never dreamed that it would lead us back to our alma mater and a home in Athens nearly full time. We are coastal kids, right? But now I find my trips “home” to St. Simons shorter and shorter because we don’t want to miss the Dawgs vs. Kentucky in Stegeman. Or we don’t want to miss our neighborhood progressive Christmas party down University Drive. Wait how can we skip a Tribute to Dan Magill, the greatest bulldog ever, at the Classic Center? (By the way, that is set for January 28.) Allgood is playing at Melting Point and we can’t miss that now can we? We need to support our clients that are participating in the Taste of Athens benefit- oh I’ll come clean- who wants to skip all that great food? You get the drift, there are so many reasons to enjoy Athens and we do. There is so much going on all the time. We love it! So those that know us know that all our interests end up in print. Vance felt strongly that we needed to support winter and spring sports so last year we launched BI Athens from January to June to cover beyond the hedges. We deliver it in print to Athens and Oconee, while everyone else can follow along online. This year, we are adding the Athens flavor to the publication. We are covering philanthropy, music, culture, the downtown vibe and more. It comes a little easier after two years of getting to know so many of the movers and shakers and their enterprises through our guide2athens book and website. It is the perfect fit. You will notice the way to navigate BI Athens is the sports news is on red pages and the Athens entertainment news is on black. Of course I know your favorite part of the publication will be the photos from all the happenings. “You never know who you’ll see in BI,” coined our sports guru Jeff Dantzler years ago. He even admits to looking at the photos first before delving into the articles. Our entire team that contributes to Bulldawg Illustrated at the end of the day is first and foremost comprised of diehard Dawgs fans. Dantzler spends his days and nights covering the Bulldogs as a sportscaster on air and has done so for three decades. He lives and dies for the joy of the Ws. Murray Poole has covered the Dawgs in print for nearly a century, first at The Brunswick News and now more for fun than a paycheck for Bulldawg Illustrated. Our BI Athens editor, Ryan Scates, is going to be a “Double Dawg” when he wraps up law school. Our Public Relations Director Andrew Miller was graduated from UGA. Our sales girls alum Holly Stanfill and Kelley Blanton are both super fans. Our Athens delivery fella for the last four years, Zack Miller is a senior at Georgia. Throw in our interns from Grady and we have a pure bred UGA staff. I hope Bulldawg Illustrated reflects the spirit that guides us - the enthusiasm and love that we as fans feel for the Bulldogs we support. I will let you get to it. Plus I want to get out into the snow day. My neighbor just skied down University Drive. Never a dull moment in the Classic City!

The EDITOR Ryan Scates It’s great to be back in the saddle for another year of Bulldawg Illustrated Athens and a glorious spring semester in America’s favorite college town. You may notice some changes to this year’s format of BI Athens, and since we’ve added on-campus distribution for 2011, this may even be the first time you have picked up a copy of our paper. This year, BI Athens, BulldawgIllustrated.com and Athens.Guide2s.com are teaming up to bring you comprehensive coverage of not only the best in spring semester sports, but also the latest and greatest in Athens lifestyle and culture. Also you will notice some new names and faces in the publication this year as we welcome three new interns to Bulldawg Illustrated/Guide2Athens. Brittany Biddy, Alana Carithers and Chelsea Swanheart are respective rockstars in UGA’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, and will join returning sports contributor Chelsea Lipocky, who is fresh off an internship with ESPN up in Bristol, Connecticut. After nearly a month away from Athens, no doubt many students are itching to get back to the Classic City and all of its glories. Brittany covers the Classic City on New Year’s Eve for those that popped back over to celebrate the holiday. For those of you who maybe overindulged a little over the break, Alana Carithers takes a look at the best places to find a healthy meal in Athens to get back in shape for that spring break trip you are probably starting to plan this month. Be sure to check out Chelsea Lipocky’s profile of the newest Gym Dawg, Lindsey Cheek. The Watkinsville native just graduated from Oconee County High School in December. In order to stay within the NCAA rules, Cheek trained on her own until high school graduation in order to be ready to compete with the Gym Dawgs in their first meet in Denver that they won on Jan. 8. Of course I would be remiss not to encourage you to check out all of the fan photos we have included in issue one of BI Athens 2011. Be sure to read Chelsea Swanheart’s compilation of fan profiles on page 14 and see if you have been spotted by one of BI’s photographer’s roaming around town! After a great start for BI Athens, we are looking forward to a bigger and better 2011. In our second year of publication, we hope to be a meaningful part of your Athens experience. If you have any suggestions, comments, story ideas or events that you think we should cover, feel free to contact me personally anytime at ryan@bulldawgillustrated.com. Here is to a Happy New Year as our cover says. And it couldn’t be off to a better start which is shown in the photo I took of Trey Thompkins dunking during the Kentucky win. Speaking of, if you haven’t jumped on the Hoop Dawgs bandwagon yet, you better hurry up because it’s filling up fast. Get out and support all our spring semester sports whenever you can. We’ll be looking for you. Go Dawgs!

The GURU Jeff Dantzler

Georgia athletics could be in for a banner winter and spring. On the hardwood, the Bulldogs secured a huge win over Kentucky in the Southeastern Conference opener. As fans of every school in the league know, victories over the Wildcats have been rare through the years and they are tough to come by. Mark Fox is an excellent coach with a lot of talent, led by Trey Thompkins and Travis Leslie. There’s no question that the Bulldogs can contend for the Southeastern Conference title in the rough and tough East division, which could have five NCAA Tournament teams. Come March, the Dogs could be poised for a run in the dance. As usual, legendary hall of fame coach Andy Landers has another outstanding squad. The Lady Dogs captured their SEC opener and upset then No. 10 Kentucky, breaking the ‘Cats 25 game home court winning streak. They have a great opportunity to contend in the league and receive an invitation to the NCAA Tournament. Georgia has received bids to 27 of the 29 all-time tournaments. Jack Bauerle has another pair of fantastic swimming teams. The women, with Chelsea Nauta amongst the standouts, could contend for the program’s fifth national championship. The men will be in the running for another top ten finish. Bauerle, head coach of the 2008 United States Olympic Women’s Swimming team, was on the blue ribbon search committee for Georgia’s then vacant athletic director position and had a big role in the extremely popular and unifying hire of Greg McGarity. It’s tough to follow a legend, particularly one who won 10 national championships, including five in a row to close out a phenomenal career. Jay Clark, as an ace recruiter, had a huge role in Suzanne Yoculan’s incredible success. With Cassidy McComb amongst the top performers, Georgia’s gymnastics team is banking on being right back in the thick of the national championship race. On the links, Kelly Hester’s women’s golf team will be one of the SEC’s best. Chris Haack’s men’s team is loaded and a prime contender for the national and Southeastern Conference championships. The same can be said of Georgia’s two tennis teams. Jeff Wallace has a typically strong team, led by defending NCAA singles champion Chelsea Gullickson. Her southpaw brother Craig – more on the David Perno’s Diamond Dogs to follow – will help anchor Georgia’s pitching rotation. Georgia’s men are stacked. Along with returning standouts Drake Bernstein and Javier Garrapiz, the Bulldogs welcome in the country’s top class with seven newcomers. There’s no program in the land that has enjoyed the consistency and camaraderie of Georgia tennis. The NCAA Championships are in Palo Alto this year, and both Georgia teams will have a shot at that precious trophy. The tournament returns home to Athens in 2012. Wayne Norton has a new track and men’s and women’s teams that will be amongst the best in the SEC. At the top of the list is one of the elite athletes not just at Georgia, but in the world. Torrin Lawrence is one of the fastest runners on the planet. NCAA championships and a berth on the Olympic track team could be in the cards for this phenom. On the diamond, Georgia’s lineup and defense will be amongst the best in the SEC, led by electric center fielder Zack Cone. The big question mark is on the mound. Gullickson, fellow lefty Alex Wood and junior righty Michael Pallazone are the leading candidates to hold down the three weekend rotation spots. Hard throwing righty Cecil Tanner is a big key to the bullpen. David Perno has done great things at Georgia, highlighted by three trips to the College World Series, two SEC titles and five of the program’s 10 all-time NCAA tournament berths. It’s so tough in the SEC, especially with the incredible facility upgrades around the league, but Georgia will certainly have the type of team capable of making it to the postseason. And for the near future, the Bulldogs recruiting class – the freshmen of the 2012 campaign – has been ranked No. 2 nationally.

THE INTERN Brittany Biddy

As a new intern with Bulldawg Illustrated and Guide2Athens, it only took me about two seconds to decide what I wanted to write about in my Intern’s Note. Since I will be focusing on life and events in Athens, how could I not mention downtown and everything it has to offer? Fall semester was winding down and my roommates and I knew we wouldn’t be seeing each other for about three weeks as we all headed home for the holidays. I’m one of the lucky ones who considers my roommates some of my best friends. We then all decided at that fateful moment during finals week that we would be spending New Years Eve in Athens, together, as we counted down to 2011. As we got out of the car downtown on December 31, 2010, I instantly knew it was New Year’s Eve. Like I would have been able to forget. Ladies were dressed in rhinestones and four-inch heels, while boys were equally suave in Polos and khakis. I was personally donning my L.B.D., or Little Black Dress for you more fashion challenged individuals, as I counted down the last ten seconds of 2010 with my best friends. We all remember where we were as the clock struck midnight and I can't help but wonder what everyone else was doing at that exact moment. I’m proud and hope that you feel a hint of jealousy as I celebrated the new year in one of my favorite cities. The Classic City was so crowded downtown and resembled a game day on steroids. Good thing I don't know anyone battling claustrophobia. It looked as if the infamous Georgia vs. Florida rivalry had taken over Athens as the Battle of the Borders migrated to become a Battle over Broad. The weather was perfect and the bars had lines like I've never seen before. The smiles on everyone’s faces as groups waited to cross busy intersections proved that even the longest of lines were definitely worth the wait. It wasn’t just the bars that received all the business, but restaurants and other local hotspots accepted the surge in downtown attendance. Typical Athens restaurants were being craved as if they were foreign delicacies while the night’s festivities were winding down. We waited twenty minutes for a booth at The Grill, but despite that extra wait, the fries and feta dipping sauce have never tasted so good. There’s nothing else in my life that can quite compare to Athens. The feeling is definitely contagious and the energy is unimaginable. The atmosphere is almost overwhelming if it is your first time driving down Milledge Avenue or walking around North Campus, making sure to sidestep The Arch, of course. New Year’s Eve in Athens was just one aspect of the Classic City that I adored. So I ask you to reflect on where you were at midnight on January 1, 2011. It doesn't matter if you had a New Year's kiss or even if you spent the night in watching MTV drop Snooki in a glass ball. As long as you enjoyed yourself then 2011 is bound to be unforgettable. I know that I wouldn't put myself anywhere else but Athens, and downtown that evening is a mental picture that I'll never forget. I hope you enjoy the pictures on page 13 that I took that night at Magnolia’s and Boar’s Head so you too can experience Athens like I did. I’m incredibly lucky to have spent New Year’s Eve with amazing people. I was in an amazing city, that I will have the pleasure of writing about because life in Athens never disappoints me.

Drive-By TruckerS NuCi’s Space Benefit Three night stand at the 40 Watt will be epic By Daniel Peiken Hello Bulldog Nation, Daniel Peiken here to give you my advice on live music in Athens, GA. I’ve been taking pictures at Rock Shows in Athens for over 10 years. I’ve seen 1000’s of bands and I’ve taken 1,000,000’s of photos. At least 100 of those are worth you seeing so please go to www.AthensRockShow.com and check out what I've seen. The first band that I will be telling ya’ll about is the Drive-By Truckers (www.DriveByTruckers.com). My first introduction with this band was on local radio in 2001. I first saw them on stage in 2002 and since then I have seen Patterson Hood or Mike Cooley (playing together since the ’80s) or the entire band over 100 times. Brad Morgan on drums, Shonna Tucker on bass, John Neff on slide guitar, and Jay Gonzalez on keyboards. I can hardly wait till the next show. No matter where I am, I feel at home whenever I hear the Drive-By Truckers. Their earlier songs were a little on the dark side of life about incest, murder and suicide. Their newer songs are about love, hate, Rock’N’Roll, and the radio, the future, the past and now. They are more on the Southern Rock side of Alternative Country and Punk. Next week they are returning to the 40 Watt Club in Athens for their Annual 3 Night Stand / Homecoming / Nuci’s Space Benefit Weekend. January 13, 14 & 15 the 40 Watt is gonna be filled standing room only with good and kind folks like you and me. Night 1 is the official Go-Go Boots World Premier with the 2nd Sons opening the show. DBT’s new album is called the Go-Go Boots and this night should be full of new songs and lots of fun. Tickets are still available for this night only so go to Schoolkids Records and get yours or charge by phone at 706.353.1666. Night 2 Henry Barbe (www.MySpace.com/HenryBarbe) opens the show and then Don Chambers & GOAT (DonChambersMusic.com) will get us rocking. Don sings songs from the swamp and the heart, gnarly voiced and well dressed, he’s spooky cool too. Barbe’s father plays on Saturday. Night 3 The Nuci’s Space Camp Amped Band opens the show for us and they are not to be missed. These kids have had the benefit of Nuci’s Space in their lives and have become very talented little guys and gals. David Barbe and the Quickhooks (www.DavidBarbe.bandcamp.com) will blow us away before the Truckers do. He’s one of Athens top producers and his band is made of Athens best musicians. You can get into a zone when 4 guitars are blaring at you in unison. There’s free pre-party fun at Nuci’s Space and everyone is invited. There’s a silent auction where you can win signed DBT treasures and other local goodies. Live music will be supplied by Scott Baxendale (who makes beautiful guitars for this and other bands) (www.MySpace.com/badbax123). Check it all out at www.Nuci’s.org 706.227. 1515 photos by AthensRockShow.com

HOOP DAWGS Huge win for Fox’s team at Stegeman against Cats By Ryan Scates Don’t look now, but Mark Fox and the Georgia Men’s Basketball team is the early class of the SEC East in 2011. With a conference-opening win over Kentucky, the Dawgs have claimed their first nine-game winning streak since the famous 1982-1983 season that ended in the Final Four. Further, the Dawgs’ nine game win streak is the best in the SEC so far this season. Through non-conference play, the Dawgs posted an 11-2 mark, which is the best start for the team since 2002. Considering both losses came to opponents who went on to be ranked at the beginning of conference play, Georgia looks to be a serious contender for the SEC East title. At preseason media days Georgia was picked by conference media to finish third in the SEC East, however some erratic play across the division may have some pundits changing their tone regarding the Dawgs. Florida, the preseason favorite to win the conference, has dropped contests to UCF and lowly Jacksonville State in non-conference play. Tennessee has dropped contests to Oakland, Charlotte and College of Charleston but has also shown an ability to win the big game with victories over Memphis and Pittsburgh. With a big win over Kentucky under their belt, the Hoop Dawgs are sitting pretty as SEC play begins. Of course, one of the biggest factors in SEC basketball is a raucous home court advantage. Georgia basketball fans are living up to the reputation earned in the 2009-2010 season when the Dawgs won five games inside a rowdy Stegeman Coliseum. At the Kentucky game the student sections were packed and the front row was filled with some of the most outrageous gameday outfits in the SEC. “Rocky”, a gorilla, a guy in a pink speedo and an overgrown elf joined the obligatory Green, Blue, Pink, and Orange men in the front row. But the Dawgs won’t have the luxury of playing all conference games inside the friendly and historic Stegeman Coliseum. One of the biggest weaknesses from last year’s squad was an inability to win games on the road. After posting wins in St. Louis, Georgia Tech and Mercer’s respective gymnasiums, this year’s team is providing plenty of reason to believe it can compete across the SEC. Mark Fox and the Dawgs take their 12-2 record on the road at Vanderbilt (1/12) and Ole Miss (1/15) before returning home for a three game homestand that brings Tennessee, (1/18), Miss. St. (1/22) and Florida (1/25) to historic Stegeman Coliseum for a showdown with the Red and Black. photos by Ryan Scates

ATHENS EATS Healthy options to stay true to 2011 resolutions By Alana Carithers It’s that time of year again- that time of year that we all buckle down and make resolutions to change ourselves for the better in the face of the New Year. Many people resolve to lead a healthier lifestyle by eating better, but this common resolution often runs into a snag- how does one eat healthy at a restaurant? Luckily, some of Athens’ favorite dining spots offer several wholesome and delicious options for the calorie- conscious New Year’s resolution diner. Farm 255 This unique Athens establishment offers everything a health- conscious diner could ask for in a restaurant: all food served is from local organic farms, and all meat is local, antibiotic free, and pasture- raised. The colorful, seasonal menu offers a variety of delicious meal combinations that will keep even the most health- conscious diner on their toes. The winter dinner menu features unique sandwiches, a fresh shrimp and grits plate, and a vegetable entrée plate that changes daily. They offer several soups and a (literally) farm fresh salad as starters! The brunch menu provides an extensive blend of meals that include fresh eggs, homemade granola, and the unique “Brunch Burger.” Farm 255 offers New Year’s resolution makers plentiful options to enjoy eating healthy. Barberitos Known for it’s made – to – order, quick serve burrito, Barberitos’ philosophy of fresh produce is perfect for the healthy- eater on the run. Their colorful produce arrives daily, making every bite crisp and fresh. All ingredients are free of added fats and preservatives, so each item is healthy. The menu offers diners burritos, tacos, salads, and quesadillas. An especially fantastic part of the menu is the “7 under 7” options. These burritos, tacos, and salads offer delicious meal choices that are less than 7 grams of fat. These meals such as the “Mini Chicken Burrito” still have all the flavor of the regular menu items, but with fewer grams of fat. Often a small side salad is substituted for chips- it still gives you the crunch, but with a fraction of the calories. Amici Italian Café This pizzeria and bar’s slogan “Fresh ingredients plus fun times” sums up the attraction of this Athens area staple. Set in the heart of downtown, Amici offers a wide variety of pizzas, calzones, and other Italian dishes. At Amici, healthy eaters can indulge while still sticking to their resolutions. Try ordering pizzas with vegetable toppings, such as the gourmet traditional “Gardenia” pizza, which is topped with red onion, green pepper, mushroom, diced tomatoes, and pepperoncini’s. Choosing pizza with more vegetables keeps down the amount of saturated fat in your meal, making it healthier . Another option is one of Amici’s delicious salads, such as the “Bistro Salad” which combines a unique blend of vegetables with vinaigrette dressing over fresh Romaine lettuce. Order dressing on the side, because you will end up using less overall, and consume fewer calories. So fear not Athens, though sticking to those resolutions for a healthier 2011 may seem intimidating, with the help of some savvy Athens- area restaurants, it is possible

GYM DAWGS Profile - Lindsey Cheek By Chelsea Lipocky The Gym Dawgs welcome a new member to their team, but she has been part of the UGA family her whole life. Lindsey Cheek was born and raised in Athens, Georgia, and recently graduated from Oconee County High School. She has been involved in gymnastics since she was four. Now she has taken her athletic career to UGA, and has been practicing with the team for the past month. I met her before practice to talk to her about how life as a Gym Dawg has been so far. So Lindsey, what has the transition from high school been like? I thought it was going to be a tough transition from high school, but all the girls have really made it easy on me. Every little thing I have had a question about, they have been there to answer it, and have been really supportive. They have helped me so much with this transition, and I am really happy that they have been here to help me. What is your major? Psychology, but an intention of pre-med. That sounds really challenging. Are you nervous about your classes? Yes, I am so nervous about class. I have been setting out the days, and what I need to do. I feel like I am going to get lost! Do you have any rituals or superstitions? I don’t really have any rituals before meets or anything. What is your favorite song right now? Katy Perry’s Firework. That gets me pumped! What motivated you to come to Georgia? Its just been my dream, I have been coming to gymnastics meets all my life, and that’s all I have ever wanted to do is come to Georgia and be a college athlete here.

Where is your favorite place to eat in town? Umm…La Fiesta. I love Mexican food. What is your biggest pet peeve? This sounds weird, but when I am in a middle split, I hate it when people touch my feet! I can’t stand it! Is there anything you like to do or eat that you don’t get to have when you are training? Ha, I am never not training! I am training all the time. Have you ever played another sport? I played T-ball when I was little. I was okay. I was better at gymnastics, so I stopped T-ball and continued gymnastics. Are you glad you are so close to home, or do you wish you went farther away for school? I don’t really know if I could have handled going far away. Just getting out of the house is enough for me. You said you have been coming to gym meets here for a long time. What is your earliest memory of UGA? Probably coming and watching Kim Arnold. I was probably six, and just coming and watching them…they rocked the house. They were great. I just remember that as my first experience.
