Conclusion Evening Program

Dear Friends,

In the heart of every vibrant community and healthy democracy lies a profound truth: the pursuit of justice is a shared responsibility that binds us together. The themes of community, justice, people, and pro bono took center stage in Volunteer Lawyers for Justice’s 2022 Annual Report and they do so again tonight at our 2023 Arts & Eats for Justice Gala.

Community is the cornerstone of VLJ, a place where compassion converges with action. For over two decades, our collective work displays that the path to justice is paved not by a dedicated few, but by the unity of many. Partnerships are the threads that weave our success, and together we defy limitations, expand our reach, and fight for a fairer, more just New Jersey.

Justice is not a distant ideal; it's a living reality we cultivate every day. As an organization, we believe that everyone, regardless of their socio-economic status, deserves justice, and our volunteers who stand up in court, reform unjust laws, and provide legal advice on perplexing matters are shining examples of advocates championing justice.

People, their stories, challenges, and dreams, are at the heart of everything we do. In 2022, VLJ staff and volunteers worked on 1,960 cases. Those cases represent 4,561 individuals and families who found their voices, reclaimed their dignity, and stood tall against a system designed to operate against them. Their stories fuel our “Why?” and energize us to fight further.

A BENEFIT FOR VOLUNTEER LAWYERS FOR JUSTICE

Pro bono is a beacon that lights the way to a brighter system of justice. Our community understands that every human deserves not just access to justice, but to know, see, feel, and breathe it. Through your unwavering dedication, 568 volunteers were beacons of hope, donating over $2.4 million in pro bono legal services. Your generosity amplifies our impact, proving that justice isn't an abstract concept it's a powerful force that transforms the lives of clients and volunteers alike.

Each page of this journal is a testament to the impact of our work. The triumphs of those we honor Paul J. Fishman, Reed Smith LLP, and Verizon along with the support of the community joined here tonight, speak to the collective power that we harness through our pro bono efforts.

Tonight, let's celebrate pro bono, each other, and the knowledge that justice looks good on New Jersey.

In solidarity and gratitude,

4

VLJ’s mission is to ensure access to justice for people experiencing poverty.

REED SMITH

BEACON OF JUSTICE AWARD

Reed Smith is an international law firm with 31 offices around the globe, we are dedicated to helping clients move their businesses forward. With an inclusive culture and innovative mindset, we deliver smarter, more creative legal services that drive better outcomes for our clients Our deep industry knowledge, long-standing relationships and collaborative structure make us the go-to partner for complex disputes, transactions and regulatory matters

Pro bono is at the core of Reed Smith’s identity and is an invaluable part of the firm’s culture, allowing it to make a positive difference by providing free legal advice to low-income individuals, charities and not-for-profit organizations Consistent with its values, Reed Smith is proud to be active in supporting countless organizations in New Jersey and throughout the country.

For over 15 years, Reed Smith has been actively involved in working with Volunteer Lawyers for Justice (VLJ), handling matters in a variety of practice areas including those impacting vulnerable survivors of human trafficking and veterans. The firm also provides advice and counsel through VLJ’s legal clinics, to help advance racial, economic and social justice for New Jersey residents

The commitment of the Princeton office to empower underserved communities extends to various other areas One notable collaboration is with HomeFront, an organization dedicated to assisting the homeless in Central New Jersey HomeFront addresses the immediate needs of families while harnessing community resources to provide them with the skills and opportunities necessary to break the cycle of poverty. Reed Smith has more than 20 years ’ experience of providing representation in domestic violence, divorce, child support, expungement and municipal court proceeding

Reed Smith is also a long-time supporter of Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) and stands with KIND in its belief that no child should ever appear in court without high quality legal representation To date, the Princeton office has provided pro bono legal representation to 11 unaccompanied children in New Jersey in collaboration with KIND’s Newark office. This is no small accomplishment, when one considers that immigration cases for most unaccompanied children span several years and often require multiple filings and representation in various forums One of our partners also serves on the Newark Advisory Committee for KIND in New Jersey, strategizing with other committee members on policy recommendations and solutions to the latest challenges impacting migrant children.

Our attorneys in Princeton have worked tirelessly over the years, tenaciously advocating for various underserved communities. The Princeton office partners with organizations that handle matters ranging from cases ensuring the government provides merited disability benefits to our nation’s 22 million veterans and active duty personnel, to assisting low-income renters facing tenancy challenges, to dedicating resources and time to help the homeless population in the surrounding area.

Reed Smith encourages all its lawyers to get involved in pro bono work and supports them to proactively seek out and develop new pro bono opportunities The firm has a dedicated Pro Bono Committee, working to further the firm’s pro bono mission and goals across its global platform. The importance the firm places on pro bono work is reflected in its policy under which up to 140 hours of pro bono per year count toward lawyers’ chargeable targets

Across the entire firm, Reed Smith provided 92,000 hours of pro bono in 2022, with more than 60,000 provided by our U.S. offices.
