A BIG PLATEAU social housing & urban platform T E A M : v. m a l a m i , e . g e r o s t a t h o p o u l o u RESPONSIBILITIES: concept , design processing, 2D-3D visualization TYPE: housing / urban design TUTOR: a. vazakas SEMESTER: 7th (2011) LOCATION: rethymno, GR, 35.371058, 24.473155
The site’s adjacency to the archaeological site of “Fortezza” venetian castle, along with the lack of large public spaces in the narrowly-built old town of Rethymnon, lead to the pursuit of the creation of a public “plateau” that promotes the interaction between the tourists and the local life. This platform develops itself in the interspace between life-hosting social housing “bars” and is perforated in order to relate the activities of the public level to the underlying parking space. This interaction is managed through large atriums that act as light and air sources for the parking lot, while strands of vegetation appear on the visitors’ level, without affecting the continuity of its ground’s topology. The apartment blocks consist of 4 types of life capsules, according to the number of inhabitants, ranging from 30 to 120 sq.m.. These capsules can be inserted to a scaffold-like hosting structure, creating a mutable environment that alters according to anthropogenic and natural changes in the course of time.

TEAM: individual TYPE: infrastructure/urban design TUTOR: p. karamanea SEMESTER: thesis (2015) LOCATION: athens, GR, 37.917888, 23.744079 Aim of the project is the regenaration of an area that lies on the boundary between the cohesive urban tissue and the southern suburbs of Athens. The area has attracted new interest due to the upcoming large-scale landscape and housing project in the neighbouring ‘hellinikon complex’ (former airport) as well as to the future project of a tunnel that will facilitate access to ‘eleftherios venizelos’ airport from the city. Nonetheless, the area does not have the appropriate transit infrastructure to support this change. The site expands on both sides of vouliagmenis avenue, an artery that connects the city centre to the southern suburbs, and is a spot in need of redefinition of the relationship between urban and suburban, as well as between the eastern and western side of the highway, that presently tend to have a clearly differentiated character. In order to strengthen and clarify these relationships, the avenue has been downgraded to the lowest level of the site and dealt with as a “river” that flows throughout the project. Above the avenue, a broad overhanging platform connects the two neighbourhoods, while two diagonal routes, one on each side, connect the large scale of the urban facade to the small scale of the suburban neighbourhoods.

jumping installation in Letten (2018) TEAM: C. Cirrone, V. Malami TYPE: installation TUTOR: Ciro Miguel INSTITUTION: ETH Zurich LOCATION: zurich, CH, 47.386139, 8.534191
During summertime, Letten transforms into a space where risk is performed and celebrated. All of a sudden, bridges become part of an adventurous landscape. The action of jumping emancipates those who dare from the constraints of everyday life and the monotony of the real. To jump is to express the weight of the body in its literal meaning: its degree of attraction towards the earth. Once the jumper steps on the podium, the viewer can imagine the moment that comes next, the collision of the body and the horizontal surface: the climax of gravity’s violence. ‘Take the leap’ proposes a transposition of the act of jumping to the winter months, during which the area of Letten presents an abandonment image, in total contrast to the summer vividness. It invites the daring ones experience different types of collision through an almost suicidal intallation scenery.

an inclusive startup incubator (2018) TEAM: J. Li, D. Ahn, V. Malami TYPE: workspace TUTOR: Marc Angelil, Charlotte Malterre-Barthes, Something Fantastic INSTITUTION: ETH Zurich LOCATION: zurich, CH, 47.386139, 8.534191 President Macron wants France to be a “start-up” nation. We want Marseille to be an inclusive city. Recognizing a vicious circle between the notions of unemployment, lack of education, precarious living conditions and spatial discriminations, we qualify the new digital language to be a binder between users of different backgrounds. An inclusive start-up incubator, Silicon Babel©, provides education and employment opportunities to the inhabitants of Marseille, and acts as a stepping stone to access the French society. The proposed new ground of the incubator is created as an extension of the natural ground, creating a single-story, low-cost cantilever, based on a nonhierarchical grid that incorporates through the creation of courtyards the existing social housing buildings as well as the vegetation of the site. It accentuates the contrast between a robust, resilient public workspace and the more refined and compact character of parasiticly attached privately-run programs in the courtyards. Above the incubator, a terrace forms the prolongation of the public space, hosting recreational uses as well as exterior workspaces for the incubator users.

urban waterfront regeneration TEAM: a. proimou, s. pantelia, v. malami, e. dova RESPONSIBILITIES: part. in concept, design, visuals TYPE: landscape / urban design YEAR: 2013 LOCATION: chania, GR, 35.515866, 24.028060
Koum Kapi (gate of the sand in turkish) is the only sandy beach within Chania’s dense urban context, as well as one of the few parts of the city where the small scale of the past centuries has not been totally replaced by multi-storey apartment buildings, but, on the contrary, co-exists with them. Aim of the urban/landscape approach was the redefinition of the relationship between the city and the sea through diverse means, the free motion of people and bikes along the waterfront (which is now confined due to vehicle circulation), as well as the activation of various -predefined or not- land uses which do not intervene in the scale of the urban context, preserving the character of the intervention area. A large ‘promenade’ traverses the whole length of the waterfront, dividing itself into a pedestrian and a bike route, which create throughout their length different relationship types between the quay and the water. Throughout the proposal, the area acts at the same time as a passage with steady width and as a recreational platform, bringing the people by the sea.

P E R I P T E R O N design for the kiosk of athens TEAM: individual TYPE: retail / pop-up YEAR: 2015 LOCATION: squares & pavements of athens
“Peripteron” is a typical kiosk-like retail structure that has filled the past century every greek public space. It takes its name from the homonymous ancient temple typology (peri+pteron: the one that has “wings” outside of its boundaries, which lean on perimetrical pillars). The product display has changed the last years due to the new needs, with every extra product being adapted to the basic typology. This has resulted in formal and functional complexity, turning an emblematic structure into a misprint. The project aims to create a single form, into which all products and supplying devices (such as refridgerators) are incorporated. In order to achieve this aim, a basic cube of 70x70x70 cm (which corresponds to the width of the refridgerators) is 3-dimensionally multiplied, in order to include the various products. In order to deal with the warm climate of Athens, a double shelter acts as thermal insulation, with the air flowing through it, after its course through the whole structure. “Peripteron” transforms itself during the day, with moving panels acting either as sheltering for the customers when the kiosk is open or as curtain when it is closed. Furthermore, variations of the typology and the materiality are being proposed, so that the structure gets capable of adapting to the various urban characters into whom it shall be placed.

design for a typical hotel room TEAM: a. proimou, v. malami, l. michaloutsos RESPONSIBILITIES: concept, part. in design, visuals TYPE: temporary accomodation / interior design YEAR: 2016 AWARD: honourable mention
The three standard zones of a hotel room layout are re-examined in the context of the activities of the modern day traveler. The relevant functional areas are neither isolated nor grouped. Instead, superimposed, moveable layers of transparent and semi-transparent glass panels and opaque fabrics, from floor to ceiling, create some softer and some harder separations: Different areas, various uses, private/shared, interior/exterior. These negotiable boundaries are complemented by the formation of a unified landscape, integrating movement and use. This is achieved by a continuous wooden surface, folded and cut along the lines of the human body in relation to the occupant’s activities, and by a series of long, polygonal metallic beams traversing the space. The resulting overall design is proposed as a collection of modules that, almost like life-captules, can be easily integrated and placed into an existing structure in situ.

The lighthouse does not only form an orientation point for ships but also an attraction point for visitors. In this scope, on Rikkos Beach, the end of the touristic extension of the city of Paphos, we pursue the creation of a landmark that will produce social concentration and interaction, not only during the day, as the inherent character of the beach suggests, but also during the night. In this course, we propose a floating platform that develops around a caged ladder that hosts the use of the lighthouse. On this platform, the different acts that accompany swimming, such as diving, relaxing in the water and sunbathing, are introduced, while for the night activation of the place, a big projection sheet converts the area into an open-air cinema, inviting the visitors to spread around the platform, either in or out of the water, to watch a summer-night movie under the moonlight.

42
LETTERSCAPE large-scale urban furniture TEAM: a. proimou, s. pantelia, v. malami, z. balabani RESPONSIBILITIES: part. in concept, part. in design, visualization, part. in construction study TYPE: urban installation YEAR: 2013-15 LOCATION: Athens, GR, 38.044550, 23.790802 Letterscape is an outdoor installation of 4-meters-high and 2 X 3,5-meters-wide metal constructions shaping the name of THE MALL. The 3-dimensional letters are placed at a wide, empty and windy oval-shaped terrace of The Mall Athens – a large shopping center in Athens. The open-air terrace is a rather transitional space where people move from the train and bus stations to the entrance of the shopping center or the street. It is elevated above the street level, with an outstanding view of Imittos Mountain and the surrounding cityscape, but was initially lacking urban accommodation that could provoke or generate any type of activity. The installation of Letterscape serves – among others- this particular purpose: it creates an urban landscape that can be inhabited by the people, as a seating or play area. At the same time it organizes the space, creates an entrance corridor to the mall and -from a specific point of view- presents the brand name of THE MALL ATHENS as a sign. The 3-dimensional metal constructions transform the letter-symbols into useful 3-dimensional spaces or urban furniture: a bench, a bed, a canopy, a planter, a gate, a wall, a slider, etc. At the same time they serve as a symbolic background for photos and selfies. The red color of the letters –the color of the original logo of the shopping center- transforms them to gigantic playful pieces of sculpture, while the perforated skin creates interesting motifs of light and shadows, allowing for various levels of transparency. The skin and the inner structure of the installations form a single structural system that strengthens the homogeneous, abstract nature of Letterscape.

MEATING BUTCHERY butchery / meat market TEAM: a. proimou, l.michaloutsos, v. malami RESPONSIBILITIES: part. in concept, part. in design, visualization, part. in construction study & supervision TYPE: retail/restoration YEAR: 2015-17 LOCATION: Chania, GR, 35.515840, 23.907007
“Meating” is a butchery in a touristic area of Crete. Main problematic of the project has been the fact that, due to the touristic clientele, the shop before the intervention had ended up acting as a grocery store, losing its initial character as a butchery. The design aims to restore meat and cold cuts as main points of interest and therefore a continuum of displays is created in order to define a route, which the clients follow inside the store, never losing eye-contact with the main product. Entering the shop, the customer faces a large display of the raw products, element that intensifies the general “meat experience”. The area behind the displays becomes a preparation space converting the meatcutting procedure into an attraction for the customers. At the same time the full height of the shop has been revealed, allowing a large wooden surface with built-in refrigerators to reach the ceiling, increasing the feeling of familiarity in the butchery. The facade of the store is transformed from a parking lot into a transitional space between the provincial road and the shop, defined by the parallel surfaces of the floor and the canopy, framing the interior through large, full-height glazings.

LEGO PLAY FACTORY lego® interior playground TEAM: a.proimou,s.pantelia,v.malami,f.skroumpelos RESPONSIBILITIES: part. in concept, part. in design, visualization, part. in construction study & supervision TYPE: playspace in a mall YEAR: 2016-17 LOCATION: Marousi, GR, 38.044369, 23.790164
“LEGO® play factory” is a LEGO® brick playground in the interior space of a commercial center of Athens. Main idea of the design is the creation of a vast surface that will host the playing activities of children (and adults!) of various ages. According to the theme and age specifications of the company, we created subareas that differentiate from each other not by splitting the common surface of the table but through the diversification of levels, on which the kids stand. This acts as a parameter of safety as well, as younger kids cannot reach the playing surface of older ones. Each area is signed by the characteristic color of each playtype, while interweaving tubes full of bricks create the impression of a LEGO® factory. Seating benches all around the table permit the parents to attend the children, while the different flooring levels enable them to play as well. The playsurface extends in the interior of a former commercial space, allowing the creation of different lighting qualities, as well as a LEGO® cinema, showing trailers of upcoming movies of the brick-toys company.
