Re-qualification of an old warehouse into a capacity & cultural space in Gerland, an historical industrial area of Lyon, France. PROJET DE FIN D’ETUDES ECOLE NATIONNALE SUPERIEURE D’ARCHITECTURE DE LYON PROMOTION 2010
PRISE DE VUE DES PHOTOGRAPHIES PANORAMIQUES
GLOBAL SCALE & CURRENT SITUATION
A cultural & “capacitaire” space The proposed work is part of a process of increasing the level of activity in the town centre. This new, unique and multifunctional cultural space exemplifies the imminent transformation of the neighbourhood, the last relic of the city centre’s industrial past. Such a “capacitaire” space broadens the range of ways of using the area, thus allowing users the opportunity to express themselves freely in it. The glass facade made with reglit, an industrial building material, allows us to see how people use the space and move within it. This new form of the building is the result of research into the phenomenological and structural requirements and the atmosphere created by the new activities. The fracture at the entrance is an invitation to put on exhibitions or hold workshops in the public space. The concert hall opens onto the garden, put together using recycled materials from the former factory. This recycling process could be repeated for other sites undergoing transformation. By recycling functions as well as materials, this is an economical project which aims above all for sustainability.

Who we are: A group of local artists and architects who live around Blackstock road and believe that this street should be celebrated. What the project is about: For several generations, Blackstock Road has been a home to migrant communities from all over the world, and has become a place where many different cultures meet. Individuals and families with rich and diverse backgrounds live and work side by side, and their story should be told and celebrated. Where the event is going to be: 24 Rock Street is an empty site behind Blackstock road that is currently used as a dumping ground. Our project is to transform this neglected space into a temporary exhibition space which will host a series of artistic and cultural events.
