Yoga has blessed millions around the globe with good health and an equanimous mind. It is one of the unparalleled & unique contribution of the spiritual masters of India to the entire world. Unlike the aerobics it is cool and relaxed. Its results have been medically verified and thus have been universally accepted too. Even though the word ‘Yoga’ has various connotations, it is now generally understood for the Yoga-Asanas. Yoga-asanas are those set of special exercises which uses one’s own body’s parts to bring about the necessary balance in it, it also stimulates the endocrine glands. Conjoined with proper pranayama it has a holistic effect on the body-mind combine to bring about good health, amazing strength, peaceful & alert mind and thus longivity & all-round wellbeing. Our salutations to the great masters who took its message all over the world with an amazing missionary zeal. However, there are people who in their over-enthusiasm and ignorance start taking Yoga and its associated package as the means to Moksha also, and this is where they cross the line. Yoga never liberates, it just targets our ‘instruments’ and makes them healthy. Moksha is not about having a good body & mind, or even having some profound experience of quietitude or thoughtlessness. No experiences how-soever blissful ever bring Moksha. Moksha is rather freedom from having to crave or depend on any experience what-so-ever. Moksha implies awakening to ones already existing divine truth. There is no ‘becoming one’ with God, there is no ‘joining’ with anything whatsoever, it is pure & simple realization of an already existing fact. Moksha is not by any experience where we need to hook on to something nice & great. Yoga does help us get blissful experiences, but such extricated joy brought about by managing your body, breath & thoughts just reveals a deep rooted lack and thirst, rather than freedom and fulfillment. For Moksha we need to ask this question as to who is it who wants all such blissful experiences and why. A clear & doubtless knowledge about the seeker being the sought alone brings an end to all such endless mind games. Yoga purifies, and then Self-Knowledge liberates. Moreoever, the philosophy of Yoga is one of duality, because it is a package for those who take duality alone as truth. Here Purusha and Prakriti are taken as two separate, mutually exclusive, yet mutually dependent entities. Both limit each other, so there is no question of ‘freedom’ in any such scenario. So do make the best use of Yoga, but thereafter dare to keep aside all such duality-based sadhanas and turn to the royal and ultimate ‘’Brahma Vidya’ - for Moksha. Realize the one, non-dual, reality as your real Self, and end all seekings. The world is yet to properly know about this next & final level of heritage and contribution of the Vedic Masters. Love & om,
Swami Atmananda
Atma Bodha - Shloka 17 Vedanta Section
Atma is revealed in a Pure Mind In the previous sloka we discussed the significance of discrimination between the Real and the Unreal to reveal the nature of the True Self. This sublime Self is all pervading and the substratum of all living and non-living beings. However, an important question arises here, i.e. if the Atman is all pervading why is it that it is not realised by all. The following sloka gives an answer to this question?
17 Sadasarvagatahapi atma na sarvatra avbhasate Buddhavevabhaset svachheshu pratibimbavat Sada: Always, sarvagatah: all pervasive, api: Though; atma: The Atma, Pure Self; na sarvatra: not everywhere; avabhasate: gets properly revealed; Budhhau: In the Intellect; eva: alone; avabhaseta: gets revealed; swachhesu: In a a clean mirror, pratibimbawat: like reflection.
Though the Atman is always all pervasive, it does not get fully reflected in everything. It reveals itself best in a pure and subtle intellect, just like objects get best reflected in a clean mirror. Sadasarvagatahapi atma: The atman is verily the supreme Brahman, it is eternal and omnipresent. It exists at all times and in all beings, inert or living. It is the very substratum from which everything manifests. This whole universe has been created of the Self, so whatever there is in this universe is the Self alone. Just as when we see different toys made of clay, they may apear to have different names, forms and attributes, but basically the cause is only one and that is the clay. So also this entire world of names and forms is born of one common substratum. Just as one thread connects the different flowers in a garland, in the same way one Lord alone connects the diverse and manifold objects of the world. The Lord is the connecting link that lends harmony and order to the whole universe. What appears diverse externally has its Vedanta Sandesh - Apr 2010
basis in one substratum alone, and that alone is the truth. Now if one were to understand and realise this fact, this realisation comes as a blessing and opens the doors to liberation where one discovers the all pervasiveness of the Atma and hence has a vision of onesness amidst all the diversity. But an important question arises here which is the main point under discusion in this sloka, and that is, if the Atman is eternal, immanent and omnipresent, how is it that it is not seen everywhere and by everyone? The Master explains thus: Na sarvatra avbhasate: Even though the atman being all-pervasive it does not get reflected in everything that exists. As it will be explained further the Atman reflects only in an intellect which is pure of all the
worldly impurities. At this point, first of all, one must deeply realise the profound value of the human birth. It is only as a human being that Self-awareness can be brought about. Neither animals nor the celestial Gods have the previlege of knowing the true nature of the Self. Both, the animal yoni(life) and the form of Devatas are categorised as ‘Bhog yoni’i.e. being born as any animal or devata, one only exhausts his previous karmas, sinful karmas in case of animal life and meritorious karmas in case of devatas. But in both the cases there is no opportunity or freedom to modify or polish one’s actions and make any changes at the level of the mind and intellect. Only a human being has the previlege of bringing about Self-awareness by purifying the mind with righteous actions and gaining Self knowledge, which is why unlike animals and Devatas a human birth is known as a ‘Yog yoni’i.e. a human being alone has the faculties of the mind and intellect where realisation of the Self as Eternal, self effulgent and blissful nature can be brought about. But as the Acharya warns that this not enough. Being born as a human being is not the only quality required to bring about this divine realisation but as a human being too one must have a pure mind and intellect which is then the right surface to reflect the sublime nature of the Atman. Here one needs to understand that even at the level of ignorance we all have an understanding of the Self, we do know ourself as something, but this awareness of the self is what is visible to the eye or felt at the level of emotions and intellect as the body, mind and intellect, but this knowledge of the self is an illusion because the Body etc themselves are not real. True awareness is only brought about when we know our true nature as timeless, limitless and blissful self. The significance of a pure mind to attain this realisation is explained in the next part of the sloka. Buddhavevabhaset: The atman has a self-protective security system. It naturally does not reveal its glorious nature in minds sullied with self-centred desires, individual likes & dislikes, attachments etc. even if a person were to gain the theoritical knowledge of vedanta, the knowledge will not benefit the per-
son with direct realisation and willl only remain as intellectual understanding. On the other hand if a person’s mind is pure the true nature of the Self is revealed once the person gains the knowledge of Vedanta. A pure mind is a mind which aims for spiritual growth as the goal of life. A person with a pure mind has discriminated between that which is real and unreal and is consequently free from self-centred desires. Only such a person rises above personal likes and dislikes for people, objects and situations. A sattwik person or a person with such purity does not aim to make external situations favourable to himself but creates a mind set which adapts humbly and intelligently to any kind of situation, as an instrument of God. Only such a person is a master of a pure, quite, intelligent and subtle mind, creating an ideal mental atmosphere to gain the knowledge of the Self. Therefore the scriptures suggest such a pure mind set alone as a pre-requisite for this knowledge. So here the Acharya says that although the Atman is all-pervasive, only a person with a purified mind alone has the potential to discover the reality of the Self. This is explained with a classic example of a mirror in the last part of this sloka. swachheshu pratibimbavat: The acharya says just as images reflect on a clean and polished mirror, so also the awareness of the Self as eternal, self-effulgent and blissfullness reflects only on a surface of a pure mind and intellect. Objective Sciences reveal that the light which falls on every object creates a reflection on any external surface around. But it is only a few selected surfaces like a mirror which clearly reflect the image created on them. In that case too only a clean polished mirror reflects an image very clearly. One may note that a dusty mirror will reflect a very vague and unclear image and a distorted mirror too will show distorted images, so also a very significant implication revealed here is that even though as a human being, having an intellect we all have the potential to see the Real nature of the Self but if the mirror of the intellect is veiled and distorted by mental impurities we will lose the previlege of knowing the divinity of our very own self, disrespect it and continue to suffer the pangs of ignorance and misapprehension. It Couldn’t be Done Edgar Guest Somebody said that it couldn’t be done, But, he with a chuckle replied That “maybe it couldn’t” but he would be one Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried. So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin On his face. If he worried he hid it. He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn’t be done, as he did it. Somebody scoffed: “Oh, you’ll never do that; At least no one we know has done it”; But he took off his coat and he took off his hat, And the first thing we knew he’d begun it. With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin, Without any doubting or quiddit, He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn’t be done, and he did it. There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done, There are thousands to prophesy failure; There are thousands to point out to you, one by one, The dangers that wait to assail you. But just buckle right in with a bit of a grin, Just take off your coat and go to it; Just start to sing as you tackle the thing That cannot be done, and you’ll do it.

Thanks for your mail regarding 'Management Lessons from 3 Idiots Movie'. We had the privilege of seeing this beautiful & educational movie day before only. It is indeed nice, jovial & at the same time thought-provoking too. Its message is extremely important for the whole deluded mankind - all over the world.

Anyone who has been a student of Bhagwad Gita will see that this is what our forefathers have always been talking about. 'Swadharme nidhanam sreyah, pardharmo bhayavahah - Follow your love, even if it appears to be relatively less productive' (Gita Chapter 3). I am happy that Aamir and his team appreciated these important facts dearly and have taken pains to effectively bring it out to the world. Hats off to them for such creativity and also for using this modern media for such positive & noble use. Follow your love, and excellence will follow you like a shadow. However, the ignorance of our own heritage is so profound that there is no mention whatsoever of this fact in the entire film that this principle has been effectively, elaborately and logically propounded in Gita. Obviously our masters did not bother about the Intellectual Property Rights regime. Incidentally that is what we sanyasis also do. We reject the blind and thoughtless ways of the world to get into the never ending rat-race of oneupmanship and ego-fulfillment, and just follow our love, our swadharma that which God really wanted from us. This is indeed the way to peace, excellence & the subsequent prosperity, which incidently we never deliberately pursue & follow, but rather it does follow us as a blessing from God. Culmination of such a way of life is in enlightenment. Jai Sri Krishna. Love & om Swami Atmananda

Kumbh Mela is a mega religious event in India that is organized on the banks of select sacred rivers, on such a grand scale that it has been named as a must-see world event at least once in one’s life-time. The grand participation shows that it has great significance for a person of our faith & religion. There are no invitations sent to anyone, no publicity is done, yet at an appropriate time millions and millions of faithful ones start their humble and at times tedious pilgrimage even from the remotest places of the country to

that particular place. Kumbh Mela and most of the other Hindu festivals like Sankranti etc, all reveal the psyche of Cosmic Connectivity of Hindus. They dont live in a small world of their families and society alone, but have an equally intimate connectivity with stars and planets too. They indeed live in a big big world, and the planetary positions guide and even control their lives. Kumbh Mela too is one such event. Kumbh Mela is different

when the Jupiter and the sun are in Vrishchik Rashi (Scorpio) then the Mela is celebrated at Ujjain, on the banks of River Kshipra; when the Jupiter and the sun are in Simha Rashi (Leo) it is held at Nashik, on the banks of River Godawari; while when Jupiter enters Aquarius and the Sun enters Aries it is celebrated at Haradwar, on the banks of Ganga. These configurations at each of these places come once in twelve years, and at that time it is said to be Maha (the main or bigger) Kumbh, while in between after six years comes an Ardha (Smaller or Half) Kumbh is organized at the same place. As the belief and faith in astrology is extremely widespread, so everyone is aware of all these planetary positions, and at the right time, the Mela starts. Kumbha is a Sanskrit word for Pitcher or Pot. The name refers to an old story of Pauranic era. The story which comes both in Mahabharata and Vishnu Purana, revolves around the aspirations of both good & bad forces to partake a drop of Amruta, or nectar of immortality. In fact the objective of all the pilgrims of Kumbh Mela too is just to partake a drop of nectar of immortality. The whole grand event of millions is just & just to awake to the realm of immortality. Amrut flows and rains at that time, and millions partake that prasad. In Hinduism every value and aspiration has an associated mythology, so also here. Kumbh Mela is connected with the famous incident and story of Samudra Maanthan, or churning of the ocean.

The story of Samudra Manthan is a legendary one. Once Lord Indra, the King of Gods, while riding his elephant came across Rishi Durvasa who offered him a special garland. Lord Indra received the garland but placed it in on the trunk of the elephant. The elephant got annoyed by the aroma of the flowers and threw the garland on the floor. The sage Durvasa got infuriated as the garland was a dwelling of Sri or fortune and was to be treated very reverentially. But Lord Indra unknowingly committed a sin and also insulted the sage by throwing the garland. Durvasa cursed Indra and all Devas or gods to be deprived of all their celestial power & strength. Subsequently there was a combat between the devatas and demons, and as expected the Devatas were defeated by Asuras. The leader of the demons army was King Bali who achieved control of the universe. All the Devas went to Lord Vishnu for help and Vishnu advised them to churn out Amrut present in the Ksheer Sagar and then alone the devatas will regain their strength. For this he advised that they need to take help even from asuras, and then team together to get the nectar out of ocean. The gods formed an association with asuras to jointly stir up the ocean for the nectar of immortality and to divide it among them. Lord
Vishnu
additionally
informed the Devatas that
later he would organize a
plan in which the gods
alone will receive the nectar
of immortality, so that
goodness alone shall
prevail. Fourteen divine
things came out of ocean
and the last was this
Amruta, which was brought
out by Dhanvantari. When
the time of distribution of
amruta came, devatas
were supposed to sit on one
side and the asuras on the
other. Vishnu had plan to
give this amruta to devatas
alone, but some asuras
came to know of the plan
and in the tussle few drops
fell down in some places -
and these are the four
places where Kumbh Mela
is organized. It is believed
that during these times the nectar still falls in these rivers and anyone who takes a dip gets blessed by it. The saints are given priority to take the dip first and thereafter others follow. Behind all this symbolic story is the conviction and belief of Hindus that it is the knowledge of Self (as Brahman) which alone liberates an individual from the clutches of time and all limitations. Moksha or liberation is just by Self-Realization, whose knowledge is got from the awakened saints. Satsang of the saints is considered to be the greatest thing, a ultimate blessing of God and also the result of the fruits of our millions of virtues done in this or earlier lives. Amruta flows from such masters, and all the faithful ones bathe in this divine nectar. The country being such vast and at times tough that it was not physically possible for all to get satsang of the masters & saints, and here came the role of such events. The enlightened sages also made it a point to take the trek to these places and share their wisdom with anyone who cares to get any such knowledge. Free & divine knowledge flowed like Ganges there, and all take dip in this nectar. Page # 11
The Third Eye Modern physiology says that between the two eyebrows is the gland that is the most mysterious part of the body. This gland, called the pineal gland, is the Shivnetra, the eye of the Shiva, of tantra. Between the two eyes there exists a third eye, but it is non-functioning. You have to do something to open it. Otherwise, it remains closed. Close your eyes and focus both eyes on space in the middle of your eyebrows. Give total attention to it. This is one of the simplest methods of being attentive. You cannot be attentive to any other part of the body so easily. This gland absorbs attention like anything. If you give attention to it, both your eyes become hypnotised with the third eye. They become fixed; they cannot move. The third eye forces attention. It is magnetic. Your attention is brought to it forcibly. It is absorbed. It is said in ancient tantra scriptures that for the third eye, attention is food. And once you feel that the gland itself is magnetically pulling your attention, it is not so difficult. For the first time you will see thoughts running before you. You will become the witness. It is just like a film screen: thoughts are running and you are a witness. - Osho

Stories from Shiv Purana n o p e u .. c n . O e m a ti
Shiv as Mahakala Shiva is worshipped as Mahakala in Ujjain and the Mahakala Shiva Temple in Ujjain is counted third among the twelve Jyotirlingas. There is an interesting story which explains about the Mahakaleshwar form of Shiva – a fierce form which is beyond imagination and description. The story took place when Ujjain was known as Avanti and is mentioned in the Shiva Purana. Once there lived a pious man in Avanti who was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. He had four sons and the family worshipped Lord Shiva daily. Not far away from their home in a hill named Ratanmala there lived an Asura (demon) named Dooshana. Demon Dooshana hated all forms of Shiva and vedic worship. He went around killing people who worshipped Shiva. Soon Dooshana came to know about the family in Avanti that worshipped Shiva. Soon the demon arrived with his army and attacked the city. But the family continued to worship Shiva in the form of a Shivling. Finally, the demon and soldiers reached the home of the pious man and started hurling weapons. The demon broke open the door and advanced towards the Shivling by raising a sword. Suddenly, there was a deafening sound and there appeared a dreadful form beyond explanation before the Shivling. A single glance by the Mahakala form of Shiva burned the demon and his army into ashes. Uncontrollable and unsatisfied, the form of Shiva gave a huge roar; the entire universe trembled in fear. The family was but delighted to see Lord Shiva and continued chanting his glory and prayers. Before his true devotees, Shiva is always the Bholenath – one can be easily influenced. Hearing the prayers of his devotees, His anger subsided. But the family who was aware of the dangers of the world realized that the form of Shiva as Mahakala was essential for peace and prosperity and asked him to reside in this form at Ujjain. Since then Shiva remains at Ujjain Mahakala Temple as Mahakala – the one with the power to annihilate all living and non-living.

Mar’10 VM / VA Programs Sanyas Day of Sw Poornananda, Indore:
Vedanta Mission / Ashram Programs
As per the english calendar Sanyas Deeksha day of Poojya Swamini Poornanandaji was on 12th March. It has been eight years since she got initiated into this fourth ashram. For a sanyasi the Sanyas Deeksha day is far more important than any other day. It is the day which refreshes the resolve of the individual to keep aside all individual-centric relationships and aspirations and negate this superimposed individuality, so as to awake to ones true self and identity. All that which is connected to the individual alone sustains his or her individuality. In order to wake up one needs to stop giving importance to the dream. The prayer is only to appreciate the mesage of scriptures and reflect deeply on its message. She is seen offering her respects to her teachers.
Visit to Vaishnav Devi Temple, Indore: Indore now has a new and also a unique attraction - a replica of Vaishnav Devi Mandir. The temple has been constructed by a Sikh devotee of Mataji who has given his heart & soul for its construction and now its maintainance. Poojya Guruji alongwith Swamini Amitanandaji and Swamini Samatanandaji visited the temple on 9th Mar. The trip was organized by Sh Chaturvedi who has organized all security equipments for the temple. The Mahatmas were recieved respectably by the owner and then taken around. The whole RCC structure has caves and passages, including one where one has to go down on ones knees and crawl, remiscient of the Ardha Kumari on way to main Vaishnav Devi temple. In between the passages are statues of Ganeshji and other saints. The entire mountain like structure is well-ventilated and secure with necessary CC Cameras and PA System. There are two main caves, one, a very big one of Bhagwan Mahakaleshwar. The Shiv linga is of the same size as that of the Mahakaal temple of Ujjain. In this cave devotees can sit down for some meditation and bhajans also. The ambiance is very good. Further ahead after few more curves is the cave housing Mata Vaishnav Devi. It is a smaller cave, very similar to the original cave in J&K. Good arrangements have been made for prasad distribution also. Devotees get the entire prasad back along with the blessings of Mataji. There is a cellar for Bhandarass also. Later Shri. Bagga took the Mahatmas to his house next door and offered fruits etc to all. We are happy that now Indore has another nice place to visit.

Vedanta Mission / Ashram Programs
Rudrabhisheka by Ahmedabad Devotees: On 11th Mar, three devotees from Ahmedabad came to Vedanta Ashram. Chandrikaben, Kokilaben and Ashaben visited Ujjain and Omkareshwar and then stayed at Vedanta Ashram for few days. They performed Rudrabhisheka of Bhagwan Sri Gangeshwar Mahadev one of these days. Chandrikaben stayed back at Ashram for a fortnight more, and participated in all the classes & programs apart from actively doing sewa at the Ashram. The Ashram Mahatmas relished Gujrati delicacies during her stay at the ashram. She left back for Ahmedabad on 30th Mar, and looks forward to visiting Ashram again.
Ram Navami Celebrations, Indore: On 24th Mar was Sri Ram Navami, the day when Bhagwan Sri Ram took his Avatar as Dasharatha-nanda. A beautiful altar was made on the occasion in the Shiv Mandir, and all the ashramites as well as various devotees from the neighbourhood, gathered at the Ashram and together sang stotras and bhajans. First there was chanting of Vishnu Sahasranama Stotram and then the special Aarti was done. Later the section from Sri Ramcharitmanasa pertaining to the manifestation of God was sung. The principle of Avatar is one the unique features of Sanatan Dharma. It says that the freedom of one who transcends all the limitations of time, space & objectivity does not get limited even when he manifests in some form. Forms have all kinds of limitations - of time as well as space, yet one who takes up the form at will is not affected by them. That is why God can come and help us, guide us and even enlighten us.
Hanuman Jayanti, Indore: On 30th Mar was Hanuman Jayanti, and we have a consecrated idol of Hanumanji at our Ashram Temple. Hanumanji was tastefully decorated on that day, and special puja was also conducted. Evening there was chanting of Hanuman Chalisa. Hanumanji represents the best of Knowledge, Bhakti and Sewa. He is am embodiment and personification of the knowledge of Bhagwad Gita. In him we can see all the principles and values of someone who has not only understood but also imbibed the wisdom revealed by God. Mind of an ignorant jiva is as fickle as a monkey, and Hanumanji with his vanar roopa as though assures that our mind has all the divine potentials as revealed in such a manifestation. Hanumanji touches the heart of millions of devotees all over. Celebrations were held all over the city.
