Love is the way to a healthy, wealthy and happy life. That is the way of God too, so God always smiles on such people, and even enlightenment is got by such people alone. Be blessed with love. Love life, love the world, love the people, the birds, the animals, plants everything, but most important of all, love your work, because this is what you have to do most of the time. Your work is the medium by which you connect to the world around and serve it. It alone is responsible for your livelihood. So always love your work, seeing it as a command of your beloved Lord. Real education is to facilitate a person to discover ones love and then get the strength to follow & pursue it. Discovery of your ‘field’ of work is all about identifying your love. Take your call not by looking at the possible opportunities outside, but by listening to the call of your heart. This may be a luxury for the weaker majority, but a person who can listen to the call of heart alone is a free, fulfilled and a truly big man. It is such people alone who make the best of life. If you cannot do what you love, then obviously the next best thing is to start loving what you have to do. However, it has to be the path to love alone. Devoid of love everything is a burden, and then we tend to tire soon and even start planning our retirement; but never a person who is tickled and inspired by love to do something. The mid-night oil effortlessly burns for such a person, while others run away or sleep at the first given opportunity. One who loves his/her work alone is a potential creative person, and excellence is seen in such people alone. Every moment of life is a blessing for a person who is inspired, creative and dedicated. They know not any stress, because every moment is an excitement. They just have challenges and opportunities. Stress come to those who ‘have’ to do something even when they dont want to. It s simply an indication of absence of love. World without love is dark indeed. There is dejection, disappointment and soon enough diseases. When a person doesnt love ones job, then obviously success becomes elusive too, and the ignorant ones arrogate the responsibility on to the stars and foolishly even on God. When I just love to do something then the success & failures also do not really matter, every so called failure is a challenge, it is a continuous learning process and such people soon start excelling too. Later too it is not the joy of success which excites them, but the opportunity of having got an opportunity to really do something which you truly loved to do. All this is the spirit of Karma Yoga as revealed in Bhagwad Gita. Love & om,
Swami Atmananda
Atma Bodha - Shloka 16 Vedanta Section
The Five Koshas veil the Self In the previous sloka it was discussed that the entire spectrum of the anatma is divided into five parts known as ‘koshas’. This panchakosha viveka(discrimination) gives us a deeper understanding of the anatma and reveals the self effulgent and blissful self. The immaculate atman owing to its contact with the five sheaths appears to partake of their qualities, just as crystal reflects the blue cloth and the like. In the present sloka is explained how the atman is to be discriminated from the sheaths with which it is identified.
16 Vapustoshaadibhih koshaih yuktam yuktyavaghatatah Atmanamantaram shuddham vivchyat tandulam yatha Vapuhu: The body etc, tushadibhihi: husk etc, koshaihi: the five koshas; yuktam: joined, yuktya: by logical understanding; avaghatatah: forcefully; atmanam: The Pure Self; antaram: the innermost; shuddham: pure; vivichyat: discriminate, tandulam: the rice, yatha: just as.
Just as grains of rice are pounded to be seperated from its husk, so also one should deligently put efforts to discriminate the pure, inner Atman, from the five Koshas by logical intelligent undertanding. Vapuhu tushadibhih koshaih: Ignorance of Self results in imposing the dharma of the five koshas on the pure, immaculate Atman. Thus the Self appears endowed with the proerties & limitations of these five Koshas, namely Annamaya etc. As we had discussed in the previous sloka the Atman which is basically of the nature of Sat-Chit-Ananda, pure self-effulgent & blissful existence, and is untouched, as though appears to be of the qualities of the five koshas. The infinite appears as finite. This limitless appears to have become limited in our day to day lives, only by giving the non self that is the Body, Mind and Intellect undue importance. The Acharya says these five layers of our personality, vapuhu, which seemingly cover the atman l;ike husk covers the rice. This Vedanta Sandesh - Mar 2010
is a fundamental error we make because of the ignorance of the true nature of the self. Since these are directly experienced and percievable, our total attention is focused on these five layers and we innocently take the physical and mental faculties as ‘I’. But our physical and mental body being limited, we pay an imaginable price of this error by imposing the limitations of this body on our Self, and take its limitations as our own limitations. As the very ‘I’ is erroneously & baselessly taken as limited, the chapter of our lives thereafter becomes a journey of somehow fulfilling this sense of limitation into satisfaction. Thus also begins the journey of endless seeking running after one experience to another. Sruti (Vedantic scriptures) say that the Atman is beyond these five sheaths. But how does one
come to see this truth. This is expalined further. Yuktam yuktyavghat: The teacher says this truth is only seen through the process of discrimination and reasoning. By discrimination between the self and the non-self, by seeing the limitations of the anatma. The atma is not of the nature of the food sheath for it is inert, like a pitcher, is seen to non-exist before its formation, when existing it undergoes six types of modifications and is non existent after destruction. Nor is the atman the sheath of Prana or Vital air, for this layer is subject to feelings of thirst, hunger and the like and is of the nature of a particular kind of air. Atman is also not the sheath of the mind, for it asserts its egoism in the body, shows a sense of attachment and aversion and changing emotions like love, hatred, jealousy, joy and sorrow. The mind is inert too. Likewise the atman is also not the sheath of knowleldge for in deep sleep this faculty too is dissolved. Its intellect too is nothing but a reflection of pure consciousness. The atman is also not the sheath of bliss because one wakes up from deep sleep to say that one slept most happily, and had a deep and sound sleep, thus asserting the presence of the subtle conciousness in sleep. The atman thus has to realised by such process of reasoning and negation, dropping everything that is non-self. We as a ‘subject’ objectify our body, mind and intellect. This alone reveals that we are something different from it. We all know that subject is always different from the object. With this process of discrimination the importance of
reality given to these five layers is dropped thus awakening us into our natural healthy state of the atman. A significant point which one must understand in the process of negation is that negation does not mean non-interaction with the world at the level of the Body and the mind. This is totally impractical. As long as one lives one will interact through these faculties and experience the world, but negation is realizing their ephemerality, which implies dropping the sense of ‘I-ness’ with these layers. Atmanamantaram shuddham: The atman is verily the innermost, indepth substratum of everything, our body, mind and intellect, the world of objects and all the experiences attached. Truly the word ‘innermost’ also loses its relevance and so is finally dropped because the word ‘inner’ is also used with reference to the outer. In case of the Atman it alone ‘is’, the one without a second. It is shuddham - immaculate. The real self cannot be made impure by the limitations and impurities of the five sheaths. Truly, the five sheaths incorporating the body, mind and intellect are an illusion and do not have any real independent existence and so their limitations and impurities too do not have any real existence. So the Atman is ever pure and untouched, like a lotus in water. Vivichyat tandulam yatha: The acharya says this process of discrimination between the Real and the Unreal should be brought about by deliberate efforts just the husk is seperated from the rice grains.
The Five Koshas 1. Annamaya Kosha: The physical body, which is made up of Anna, the food we eat. 2. Pranamaya Kosha: The Energy Kosha, which sustains all physiological activities. 3. Manomaya Kosha: The Mind & Sense organs of perception. The thoughts & emotions. 4. Vigyanamaya Kosha: The Intellect level of personality, where all our decisions are. 5. Anandamaya Kosha: The layer of the experiences of Joy. Atma transcends all these layers of personality, meaning we are none of these. Page # 5
Spring Time Lo! Once again with the coming of Spring Dull shades of life will soon be vanishing With countless promises in store I foresee life, a multi-heathered core And with umpteen joys in offing to rejoice Happier life is the remnant choice So, let's not continue the lugubrious ponder For spring comes only once in a year Let's all dance, spring and spree Spring brings joys and colors all for free.

Letter of the Month
Real Wealth Hari om ! Greetings !
What we all seek is love, security, peace & joy. That is what we all like, and the absence of these things alone creates the lack or pain. Job, money, relatives are all means for that end alone. - Poojya Guruji
I can see that you are not only a good person, but also a blessed one. God has blessed you with so many things for which so many are struggling & striving. However, the test of our wisdom is not merely in getting what we want, but also in responding to situations when we did not get what we want, or rather lose what we did not want to lose. Holistically speaking life is about both getting & losing, so right wisdom is to be prepared for both the eventualities. Remember our discussions too started on that note alone. Continue to work hard and intelligently to get what you want, but also be aware of the inevitable other side of life. Have the wisdom and strength to take the entire package of life with equal blessedness & equanimity, and learn right lessons. What we all seek is love, security, peace & joy. That is what we all like, and the absence of these things alone creates the lack or pain. Job, money, relatives are all means for that end alone. If money did not give security then it would have no meaning, so also if our relatives did not give us love then they too would be meaningless. How desperately we need these and hold on to anything which gives us all these things becomes clear when we imagine a life without these things. Imagine what would your life be if you lost your job, money and also your loved ones? So who is the really wise & fulfilled one? Not the one who seeks, but the one who already has these in plenty and can therefore can afford to rather give these to others too. Those who have love alone can give love, those who are secure alone can give security. Now ask yourself, do you feel happy that you 'get' love or feel happier that God has given you an opportunity to 'give' lots & lots of love to all those around you - selflessly, of course starting from your own near & dear ones, and then to the whole world, including the birds & animals and what not. Do you feel secure only when you have money or still feel secure without it? This test will not only reveal to you what you really want, but also reveal how much real wealth you have truly got today. Those who foolishly take the means to be the end alone pay the price by their sorrow, grief and stress. Think. Lots of love & om, Swami Atmananda Page # 9

Sri Ram Navami
Ramnavami is the incarnation day or in common language is the birthday of Lord Sri Rama which falls on the 9th day of the bright fortnight of the month of Chaitra (March-April). This day also marks the end of the nine-day long navaratri festival of Chaitra maas. As per the english calendar Sri Ram navami falls on Wednesday the 24th of Mar in 2010. Rama was the Lord Hari Himself, incarnate on earth for the establishment of dharma(righteousness). The incarnation of God or taking an Avatar is a unique feature of Sanatan Dharma. Incarnation of God on earth is not the birth of the Supreme being like an ordinary mortal. But it is the manifestation of the Lord himself at the level of an earthly being with all his glory of knowledge and power, by invoking his own Maya Shakti. Incarnations of God appear for special reasons under special circumstances. Whenever unrighteousness overpowers righteousness and creates chaos in society, whenever individual and selfcentric attitude takes over and crushes under its feet the welfare of living beings in totality, shaking up the very foundations of a dharmic order, God takes an incarnation to re-establish righteousness, restore peace and bring about the holistic welfare of mankind. Sri Rama is an avatara of Lord Vishnu who came to re-establish the dwindling order of Dharma, by destroying the forces of evil, restoring the respect of Mahatmas and pious people and establishing the ideals of righteousness. Lord Rama was the best of men with a sterling character. He was the very image of love. He was an ideal son, an ideal brother, an ideal husband, an ideal friend and an ideal king. He can be taken to embody all the highest ideals of man. He led the ideal life of a householder to teach the tenets of righteousness to humanity. He ruled His people so well that it came to be known as Ram-Rajya, which meant the rule of righteousness, the rule which bestows happiness and prosperity on all. Worshiping the manisfestation of God on such days has special significance. Such occassions are opportunities to express our yearning to unite with God. In our worship of God it is implied that we should embibe his qualities, and live a virtuous life as God himself did. On the other hand, worship of Lord Rama is itself the surest means to develop such virtues. One who worships Sri Rama with love and devotion himself follows the path of dharma, is loving and respectful to all, performs his actions to the best of his abilities and is inspired to VedantaSandesh Sandesh- -Mar April2010 2009 Vedanta

gain knowledge of the Self. He lives a life as a representative of Lord Rama, inspired by his virtues and knowledge. This day is very popularly celebrated not only in India but all over the world. The devotees celebrate the day with special Ramayana parayans(reading of Ramayana), pujas, devotional songs, chanting of Ram nama. As we celebrate Sri Ramnavmi, let us aim to enquire and see the divine nature of the ideal of perfection known as Maryada Puroshottam. Let us make the most of the auspicious day by rejoicing the manifestation of the Lord, by seeking the blessings of our Revered Guru, by offering worship to Sri Rama. chanting Rama nama, singing devotional songs and reading of Ramayana. Jai Sree Ram.
Hanuman Jayanti Yatra yatra raghunatha kirtanam; Tatra tatra kritha masthakanjalim; Bhaspavaari paripurna lochanam; Maarutim namata raakshasanthakam “We bow to Maruti, Sri Hanuman, who stands with his palms folded above his forehead, with a torrent of tears flowing down his eyes wherever the Names of Lord Rama are sung”. Sri Hanumanji is one of the most inspiring and common Gods in the pantheon of Hindu Dieties. On the occassion of his Jayanti we offer our humble pranams at the divine feet of the great Acharya of Bhakti and sewa. If Lord Sri Rama represents what perfection and God is all about then Hanumanji represents what an ideal sewak and devotee should be like. He is indeed one of the best role models which every sewak and devotee should have in their hearts. He was an ideal selfless worker, a true Karma Yogi who worked desirelessly and dynamically. He was a great devotee and an exceptional Brahmachari or celibate. He served Sri Rama with pure love and devotion, without expecting any fruit in return. He lived to serve Sri Rama. He was humble, brave and wise. He possessed all the divine virtues. He did what others could not do—crossing the ocean simply by uttering RamNam, burning the city of Lanka, and bringing the sanjeevini herb and restoring Lakshmana to life again. He brought Sri Rama and Lakshmana from the nether world after killing Ahiravana. Hanumanji had devotion, knowledge, spirit of selfless service, power of celibacy, and desirelessness. He never boasted of his bravery and intelligence. No wonder Hanumanji inspires the masses so much. So its not surprising that in India there are far more temples of Hanumanji than Lord Sri Rama, his Master. This in no way devalues the Master, but all those who are aware of the story of Ramayana, that this is due to the blessings of Bhagwan Sri Ram himself, that may my devotee be more revered than myself simply because immulation of the qualities of a devotees is the way to their inculcation, and when we truly become like Hanumanji then the darshan of Sri Ramji will never be a far cry. Make a Difference A man was walking down a deserted Mexican beach at sunset. As he walked along he began to see another man in the distance. As he grew nearer he noticed that the local native kept leaning down, picking something up, and throwing it out into the water. Time and again he kept hurling things out into the ocean. As our friend approached even closer he noticed that the man was picking up starfish that had washed up onto the beach, and one at a time, he was throwing them back into the ocean. The first man was puzzled. He approached the man and said, "Good Evening Friend, I was wondering what are you doing?" And he replied, "I'm throwing these starfish back into the ocean. You see, it's low tide right now and all these starfish have been washed up onto the shore. If I don't throw them back into the sea, they will die from the lack of oxygen." "I understand," my friend replied "but there must be thousands of starfish on this beach and you couldn't possibly get to all of them. There are simply too many and don't you realize that this is happening on hundreds of beaches up and down this coast ... can't you see that that you can't possibly make a difference? The local native smiled, bent down, picked up yet another starfish ... and as he threw it back out into the sea, he replied, "It made a difference to that one!" You may feel like you cannot make a difference in the world today, but you CAN make a difference in one life at a time.

Reading More & Dusting Less I'm reading more and dusting less. I'm sitting in the yard and admiring the view without fussing about the weeds in the garden. I'm spending more time with my family and friends and less time working. Whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experiences to savor, not to endure. I'm trying to recognize these moments now and cherish them. I'm not 'saving' anything; we use our good china and crystal for every special event such as losing a pound, getting the sink unstopped, or the first Amaryllis blossom. I wear my good blazer to the market. My theory is if I look prosperous, I can shell out $28.49 for one small bag of groceries. I'm not saving my good perfume for special parties, but wearing it for clerks in the hardware store and tellers at the bank. 'Someday' and 'one of these days' are losing their grip on my vocabulary. If it's worth seeing or hearing or doing, I want to see and hear and do it now. I'm not sure what others would've done had they known they wouldn't be here for the tomorrow that we all take for granted. I think they would have called family members and a few close friends. They might have called a few former friends to apologize and mend fences for past squabbles. I like to think they would have gone out for a Chinese dinner or for whatever their favorite food was. I'm guessing; I'll never know. It's those little things left undone that would make me angry if I knew my hours were limited. Angry because I hadn't written certain letters that I intended to write one of these days. Angry and sorry that I didn't tell my husband and parents often enough how much I truly love them. I'm trying very hard not to put off, hold back, or save anything that would add laughter and luster to our lives. And every morning when I open my eyes, I tell myself that it is special. Every day, every minute, every breath truly is a gift from God.

Mahashivratri Celebrations, Indore: On 12th Feb Mahashivratri was celebrated with great devotion & enthusiassm at Vedanta Ashram, Indore. There were special pujas throughout the day. The first Rudrabhisheka was in the morning, second in the afternoon which concluded just before the evening Aarti, and then a late night puja which ended around mid-night. In the evening special decoration of Bhagwan Sri Gangeshwar Mahadev was done. Smeared with ashes, the kingly demeanour of Lord looked very gracious in the midst of a beautiful flower rangoli. Hundreds of devotees are given an opportunity to have darshan of Shiv-linga on the ashram terrace on this day, and offer their respects at the Shiv-Paduka. Later devotees came and sat down quietly for some dhyana too.
Sanyas Day Bhandara, Indore: On Mahashivratri day was also the Sanyas Deeksha day of Poojya Swamini Amitanandaji and P. Swamini Poornanandaji. However, as that is a fasting day, it was decided to have a special Bhandara to commemorate the occasion on the week-end, the 14th Feb. Smt Vidya Awasthi took the privilege of offering the special Malwi feast of Dal-Bati to all devotees. Both the Mahatmas were specially felicitated by her and others.
Gita Gyana Yagna, Lucknow: A seven days Gita Gyana Yagna by Poojya Guruji Sri Swami Atmananda Saraswatiji was organized at Hari om Mandir, Lalbag, Lucknow from 20th to 27th Feb 2010. The subject matters of the two morning & evening discourses were Bhagwad Gita Chapter 1, and Ashtavakra Gita Chapter 1. The evening discourse series was for the Bhagwad Gita, in which Poojya Guruji revealed the profound importance of studying the first chapter of Gita, which is often overlooked & bypassed. Every specialist takes lot of time to specifically diagnose the problem before jumping on the bandwagon of solutions. The celebrated author of Bhagwad Gita who does not waste even a single word, has given us an entire chapter, which obviously cannot be redundant. It is often said that because of Moha there is Shoka, which is like saying that because of infection there is fever, but the real test lies in identifying the nature of Moha, then alone specific solution, if any, can be given about the problem. In the moring session Poojya Guruji revealed the profound dedication of Ashtavakra Rishi for Brahma-Vidya. Knowledge alone redeems and not any Karma’s whatsoever. Karmas are just to prepare the mind and thereafter it is just knowledge and knowledge alone which as though liberates. During the Yagna P.Guruji also visited the famous Lucknow Zoo.
