Candlelight dinners, do-it-yourself wine tastings trump drugstore stuffed animals and chocolates anytime By Josh Dulaney josh.dulaney@langnews.com @JoshDulaney on Twitter
Her boyfriend presented her flowers, candy and a homemade card that featured a photo of a couple in love. There was only one problem on that Valentine’s Day six years ago, according to Amy Armstrong, while heading for a coffee in downtown Long Beach recently. “He shows his gifts and explains, ‘no, this is for my mother,’” Armstrong said. The photo was of his parents. He even got a heart-shaped toy for his Dalmatian. Armstrong nodded her head and pursed her lips, as she remembered giving him a camera and receiving nothing in return. “I think he literally forgot I existed for a second,” she said. Armstrong can laugh about it now. But there may be a few couples out there where a partner is waking up to what he thinks is just another Saturday and can’t be counted among the millions of American men who, according to a National Retail Federation survey, will spend an average of $190.53 on their sweethearts this Valentine’s Day. The NRF reports that total spending for Valentine’s Day this year will reach a record $18.9 billion.
Shipping yards are ‘chock full’ of cargo midway through long holiday weekend work shutdown From staff and wire reports
The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are bracing for increased congestion during Presidents Day weekend, with work partially halted amid a labor dispute between port employers and the dockworkers’ union, harbor officials said Friday. As of early Friday morning, as many as 27 ships waited at anchor outside the two ports, with just as many at berth, according to Port of Los Angeles spokesman Phillip Sanfield. The shipping yards — “chock full” of cargo — are 95 percent full, well beyond the “efficient” ideal of 80 percent, he said. The ports are at a “breaking point,” and there are fears that this latest labor dispute could drive companies like Wal-Mart, Target and others to shy away from West Coast ports, opting instead for Canadian, Gulf Coast and even East Coast PORT » PAGE 8

Despite Punxsutawney Phil seeing his shadow this Groundhog’s Day, signaling a longer winter, unseasonably warm temperatures this week have made it feel more like summer in the Southland rather than well into the ski and snowboarding season. And local ski resorts are feeling it. “This has been an unnaturally warm period,” said Chris Riddle, spokesman for the Bear Mountain Resorts in Big Bear Lake. “But we’re actually in really good shape. Both mountains are open and all of the lifts are available.” The resorts have nearly sold out of many of its special packages, including one billed as a
