Intro The Boat - Escape from the Fall exhibition showcases a collection of stories from the boat people who fled from Vietnam after the Fall of Saigon in 1975.

Using the story line from the worldwide well-known book The Boat of Nam Le, the exhibition gives audiences, especially Vietnamese young people a fully and closer look on how hard and resilient their grandparents, parents, or relatives had to been through and fought for their survivals. Beside that, the exhibition also wants to draw a connection with the current issue our world is facing with Syrian war refugees in Europe. By that, emphasizing the meaningless and cruelty the war is.

Venue Queensland Museum & Sciencentre is located at South Brisbane at the heart of Brisbane’s cultural precinct alongside the State Library of Queensland, the Queensland Art Gallery, the Gallery of Modern Art and the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. It is a museum of natural history, cultural heritage, science and human achievement. A popular destination for South East Queenslanders as well as visitors from around Australia and overseas, the Museum has welcomed over 10 million visitors since it was established at its current site at South Bank over 20 years ago. In the annual 4th celebration of Vietnamese Boat People Memorial (2nd of December), Queensland Museum and The Australian Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) will host the exhibition to unveil all untold stories of Vietnamese boat people.

In the effort of bringing the authentic feeling to the guests and helping them understand the topic and its message fully and deeply, the exhibition will be designed to use as less interior as it can be to lessen all distractions as much as better. The materials are used for the exhibition will be mainly made of wood and canvas.

Design Color Palette The color palette for the exhibition are shades of gray, which is a neutral and balanced color. Gray is a timeless and practical color. It also can be associated with loss, and used as a color of mourning.

Gray is a emotionless color, but sometimes can be used to evoke the feeling of nostalgia and history.

Typeface Avenir was designed by Adrian Frutiger. The design is based on two earlier sans serif typefaces, Erbar and Futura. Frutiger used two-digit weight and width convention for names: 45 (book), 46 (book oblique), 55 (text weight), 56 (text weight oblique). Fresh Script , design by Set Sail Studios is hand-painted typeface designed to help you create the look of stunning custom hand-lettering.

Poster The poster with simple design and all the important information regrading the exhibition will be posted around the town, especially in Vietnamese people area to promoted the event among the community.

The exhibition will be located inside the Queensland Museum with the total area of 4500 square feet, divided into 6 rooms based on the story line. Each room will be equipped with 60in. TVs showing the interview with survived boat people; tables displaying objects, and walls are full of information relating to the story.

Intro room The intro room welcomes guests to the exhibition by introducing two of the important figures to this event which are the author Nam Le, and the illustrator Matt Huynh whose works will be used heavily. There is also the transition wall talking and giving guests the summary about the next room of the exhibition, the first chapter of story - The Fall of Saigon.


Chapter 1 Room The narrations of the beginning of the exodus from April 30, 1975. Here are stories about the situation and how Vietnamese people found their way out of their once home country.

Chapter 2 Room All stories about how Vietnamese boat people survived the hellish journey of their lives in search for the future land. This room will be painted in the darkest black representing the hardship as well as the feeling of dead-end future all the boat people felt at that time.

All the hardship came to an end. After experiencing and enduring the hellish journey, the survived boat people are here talking about their lives after the journey; how they settled in the new country and got ready for the new future.

Chapter 4 Room The happy ending stories from the most successful Vietnamese boat people in the United States. All the stories are used with the mean of sharing and seeking the mutual understanding from people with different point of views.


Chapter 5 Room The room is dedicated to the current situation about refugees and asylum seekers from around the world. In the middle of the room is the statue made from the famous photograph “Death of Alan Kurdi.� The statue is made to remind all of us the cruelty of war, and how badly our future has been suffering with it now.
