01. THE CHOSEN SITE: FUKUTOSHIN AREA
The chosen new city is the central area located in the Fukutoshin Area headquarters skyscrapers, historical hotels, and the Tokyo Metropolita abashi Purification Water Plant. After the relocation of the plant, the site development happened and until now it is still under change. The reas suggests the fast changes in our daily lives and the built environment, Instead, a site or a building no longer has a purpose to serve and bec people to make fast changes and works around the existing site.

01. REFLECTING
The project tomorrow is not today is inspired by Arata Isozaki’s quotes and his project City in the Air. With his suggested idea of architecture only lives for a fleeting moment and understanding the rapid development over the just over 50 years in the Fukutoshin area, it is persuading to believe the existing skyscrapers will sooner or later be eliminated and rebuilt for a new change; as it has been a common practice to most of the Japanese historical buildings. Reflecting on why architecture is believed to be not long-lasting as each of them serves for a specific purpose and once the purpose is no longer dominant, the architecture became useless and a new change is demanded. Apart from accepting the fact that the city is destined to be destroyed and fearing the future demolition of the erected building, we can make the best out of the present time by aiming to make architecture more adaptable and flexible to changes. Creating architecture that does not only serve one single purpose and has a fixed setting, but makes it easily changeable and customizable. The new city is the mega modular interconnected system installed into the site. The structure is created according to the combination of grid systems of the Yodabashi water plant and current land distribution. The shapes of the modules are inspired by Kenzo Tange’s Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building to apply a more uniform architectural language to the city. The structure consists of numerous lift cores that have different heights and their heights are according to the nearby skyscraper, allowing adequate breathing and expansion space between buildings and cores. The three different levels of pedestrian walkways allow better accessibility for transporting. The structure is designed to respect the currently existing buildings and perhaps one day might even be used as a historical trace to the current situation. The adaptability of the project is the changeable location of the modules as long as they are connected to a lift core or another modular and changeable modular setting. (Please refer to the Modular Guidelines) The changeable modular settings provide a wide range of flexibility to people such as the customizable exterior walls, the easy changeable interior walls, etc. Comparing a skyscraper to a modular unit, modular units are more independent and allow easier and faster reconstruction without interfering with the other modular unit. Ironically, with the fast-changing culture and the rapid development in Japan, this project will always stay uncompleted and always set to be refined for better changes. Tomorrow is not today but today makes tomorrow.
“Our contemporary cities…are destined to live only a fleeting moment. Give up their energy and return to inert material. All of our proposals will be buried. And once again the incubation mechanism is reconstituted. That will be our Future”
"Tokyo is hopeless…I am leaving everything below 30 meters to others. If they think they can unravel the mess in this city, let them try. I will think about architecture and the city above 30 meters. An empty lot of 10 square meters is all I need on the ground. I will erect a column there, and that column will be both a structural column and a channel for vertical circulation." Arata Isozaki
