Padre’s Peace

Good neighbours become good friends…

This summer we saw (or some of you would have done) the media furore of the final EVER episode of Neighbours! I must confess, it is a long time since I watched the show, but nonetheless, I had a little dust in my eyes when I recalled Mrs. Mangle, Scott & Charlene’s wedding, and Plain Jane Super Brain becoming…well Jane!

In the years that I did watch the programme, and as with any soap or similar series, we get involved in the lives of the characters and families; we’re drawn into their day to day; we almost immerse ourselves into the storylines and believe we actually know them characters as our friends!

What this demonstrates, though, is that we crave being in relationship with others. On the whole we are made to be in relationships with others: humanity would cease to be if we completely stopped all relationships: fewer babies being born, support not being received, individuals being nurtured, and so on.

We immerse ourselves into the lives of other – usually real people (!) – and as we get to know them, we tend to get to understand them. We know the favourite foods of our partners (or ought to!), we know our best friends’ preferred cake when it is their birthday, we choose gifts for the people in our lives based on their like and dislikes… and we know those things about them because we invest in them. We invest time and energy; when they weep, we often do too; when they celebrate, we’re front of the queue for the party; when they simply need us…we’re there in a heartbeat.

One of the things I love about my role, is that I get to know many of you very well; you trust me with your stories: the good, bad, and the ugly! You share your concerns with me, and you listen to my suggestions. Thank you.

And by listening to one another, we get to know each other better, what we share and what is different. And then work out how to cope with each other’s differences!!

Chaplaincy, on behalf of the Station Commander, are hosting an Inter Faith Week event on Monday 14 November 22, 1300-1700 in the Hive. During the afternoon, representatives from the major World Faiths will be on hand to chat to you, hopefully offer some cultural delicacies, and present some real time stories of their life connected to the defence.

Please do come over, coffee will be served; ask questions, hear stories, learn about others, and maybe become friends with new people?!

If you would like to be involved in the event, either as part of the Working Party, or as a contributor then please get in touch with Padre Jo at Chaplaincy:
