month old mid street Greek restaurant. It's just a touch but it's all about playing a role in the success of this street. Owner Joubin Mahmoudi was given the scooter for his 30th birthday but now rides it rarely. "It's become more of a feature for the restaurant," he said.

Welcome to Voice on Pako Welcome to Voice on Pako! It’s been a fantastic and interesting journey getting this news and lifestyle paper to come together – we’ve met some characters, become acquainted with every blend of coffee known to the area and become more convinced that this truly is the most vibrant area of Geelong, if not Australia. In our first edition you’ll see a huge range of topics. From our interview with the local Nardi

siblings to our spectacular Fashions on the Field spread. We've talked with Sticks and Grace about their summer plans and asked King of the Castle’s Robbie Lecchino some big questions. We believe Geelong West and Newtown has everything you need – community groups, local schools, a multitude of cafes and restaurants , supermarkets and fresh produce, real estate and so

much more. In fact, when you can get your hair done next to your favourite cafe and then pop across the road to pick up your drycleaning – where else would you want to be? VOP is all about the people – we want you to take ownership and make this your newspaper. Let us know when you have events coming up, when you have a news story, or simply want to say hi to us. We look forward to hearing from you.

WHAT THE? There's always something to catch your eye in Pako, whether it's a smart car, a lunch menu - or a snappy dresser. That's especially the case when the St Joseph's boys have a 'muck up day' and take a stroll in the sunshine. CAMPAIGNING PAKO Moved THE Leukaemia Foundation has moved to more accessible offices on the corner of Pakington Street and Gordon Avenue. The new office offers better access for people with mobility issues. The Leukaemia Foundation provides emotional support for cancer patients and their family as well as education about blood cancer diseases and the relevant treatments.

SEVEN years ago Lainey Carrs fit, healthy and energetic mother Florence was diagnosed with Leukaemia. “It was literally having a chat normally one day and the next she had cancer it was a huge shock”. Sadly Florence passed away, after ‘never really leaving the hospital following the diagnosis’. After six years of ‘being in a bit of a fog’ Lainey decided that she had the power to do something and help make a change. She started up the Leukaemia Challenge 2015 with an aim to raise $10,000 to donate to the Leukaemia Foundation. Through various

fundraisers she has had along the way and a few barbecues here and there, she had already nearly reached that goal, when she decided to go out and get the tight knit Geelong West community involved. And involved they have gotten. Recently Lainey has been taking Tuesdays off her full time job in Queenscliff to patrol the Geelong West streets and get people on board with her next venture - Shop Pako for Leukaemia. On November21, Lainey is hosting the Shop Pako for Leukaemia day where all of the businesses who have come on board will have a poster of the event

in their window, and have a donation tin on the counter. Some shops haven't taken a tin but have made donations instead, which has blown Lainey away. “I knew this was a great neighbourhood having grown up here, but the support has been amazing. Everyone I have asked has come on board and is willing to help out any way they can.” On the day, Lainey and her volunteers will be walking the streets in Shave for a Cure t-shirts, blue wigs and flyers to promote the day and help get people involved. “My son couldn’t be prouder, sometimes I

Lainey Carr forget when I’m talking about it in a business meeting that I’m talking about a real person, his nanna, and he says to me "Mum, Nanna would be so proud”. And it doesn’t stop here

for Lainey who is shaving her head to raise money at another organised event ‘West Fest’ on March 22, next year. The Neighbourhood House has been helping with this. They are also hoping a local celebrity will jump on board. If you would like to help Lainey and donate money to the Leukaemia Foundation, come along to the Shop Pako day, or simply go to worldsgreatestshave.com and search for Lainey Carr. Donations are tax deductable. You can follow Lainey's journey on facebook.

PEOPLE OF PAKO story MADELIN BALDWIN

On the Nardi village HEAD down to the iconic spire in the small Pakington Village that was once an almshouse, and is now the bustling hole in the wall cafe Mister Miller and you’ll find Stephen Nardi, the owner. A few doors down at Berdi Hair Salon (a play on her name Rebecca Nardi), his sister Bex has set up shop and the two siblings peacefully co-exist in sibling harmony managing the two separate businesses. Stephen, a panel beater by trade, had applied to the CFA twice in the last few years and was gearing up to go for his

third try when his sister noticed the old Miller Building was up for rent. When she suggested he take it over he was at first hesitant, having no previous desire to run his own cafe, but having always wanted to “be my own boss”, he took up the challenge almost three years to the day since Bex opened Berdi. Alexander Miller was a philanthropist who owned many houses around the Geelong area and loved donating his wealth to help people. Stephen locked onto this spirit and decided to name his cafe Mister Miller

because “coffee helps you with your day”. He's now made a passion of creating really beautiful, simple coffee. His blend is unique to his business, as Cartel Coffee Roasters make the four bean blend just for Mister Miller. When deciding on a roaster he originally had thought of going Melbourne based but ‘why go to Melbourne, when we have the best stuff here?” Berdi have a similar approach with their hair care - they use an Australian brand O&M, who use ammonia free products and

all shampoos and conditioners are sulphate free and contain no harsh chemicals. Bex has worked in salons since year 12, (all of them based on Pakington Street), and thought of no other area she would like to have her own business. Bex also has a Cartel coffee in her salon which the customers can receive free as part of their treatment, but says it's great because “a lot of my customers come in with a coffee they’ve brought from Stephen, or order one while they are here because they know they are supporting my brother, and a

local business”. When Stephen brought Mister Miller the two were living together, and working three doors apart but this became "a little too much". And they now live separately, while still owning other property together. They both have business in their blood, with their parents and four uncles all being business owners. With five combined years of business experience between them, and plenty ahead, it will be fantastic to watch these two play their part in the Pakington Street success story.

BEHIND THE COUNTER THEY don’t get more one-eyed than Bombers supporter Keryn Woolcock. Her Geelong West shop is wall-to-wall Essendon and probably comes only second to Windy Hill’s Hall of Fame for a public collection of memorabilia. Keryn is flat out because she’s one of the last few watchmakers remaining in the area. Having worked on both sides of Pako for more than five decades, she has a good measure of the street and the community. She’ll often burn the midnight oil toiling over the intricate parts of a Rolex – or unfortunately for some – something that looks like a Rolex. She loves her work, she’s one of the few left and wouldn’t do anything else. “It’ a shame more women didn’t take it up,” she said. Keryn’s football and work often interconnect. She’s big on James Hird and it’s clear the ongoing saga has damaged her faith in the game. “He’s the best player I've ever seen at Essendon". She has a framed, autographed number 5 jumper. She’s also had the last word when the occasional Cat fan – or player – has bagged her beloved Bombers. To the extent of craftily inscribing ‘Go Bombers’ on a battery. That support has lasted nearly 50 years now and is as dyed in the wool as her dedication to her trade.

Ok ladies it’s Spring Carnival! Curling irons, hot rollers, product after product, hair extensions, and don't forget hairspray to concrete that look. Wow a lot of preparation just to look good. But what happens after all of this? Your poor hair is dry, lacks shine and doesn't look attractive any more. What's the solution, a hair cut maybe? Start again? Fear not, here are some simple ways to keep your hair looking and feeling good for this Spring Carnival. For coarse thick hair that lacks moisture and very dry, try smothering it in some olive oil and avocado. Eggs eggs eggs. This gives great shine, filled with protein and moisture for all hair types. To keep any hair, dry through to normal, beautiful, use coconut oil regularly –this gives great moisture and calms down flakiness on the scalp.

A PLACE story MADELIN BALDWIN

Sticks and Grace with Nathan Lightfoot I HAD the chance to sit down with Sticks and Grace owner Nathan Lightfoot to pick his brains on family, business and why he loves Pako. Nathan family has a long history in the food industry. His parents owned a fish and chip shop in Portarlington while he grew up and his mother has been a chef for over 30 years. Nathan ran Pepe's pizza shop in Bell Park for eight years prior to Sticks. After having his first baby almost three years ago the late nights and weekends were taking their toll and Nathan decided to make his move into the cafe industry. He had scouted a few different venues in Pakington Street, before settling on Sticks and Grace. “I originally came in a few times to eat and have a look

at the way the business ran and thought it would be too busy for me to handle. But I’m glad I decided to take it on as it’s actually been a lot easier than I thought.” Whilst being a family oriented man (he co-owns the cafe with his mum Carmen), and having his third baby just three weeks ago, Nathan is quick to stress that he is more than just the owner. “I’m in here four days a week, all day in the kitchen cooking, working on the seasonal menu and doing the bookwork”. In fact, the same day that Charlie, his youngest, was born Nathan was in the kitchen doing prep for the menu which was going to launch the following day. It’s no wonder then that he is looking to increase business and take Sticks and Grace to a new level.

Beginning Friday October 3 he is opening later until 6.30pm for coffee and cake, and expects to be open even later by the end of November with a light food menu, music and drinks. Sticks is licensed until 1am seven days a week and they take advantage of this with their functions. At this time of year they are super busy running these most weeks, starting with a minimum 20 people with a chef on hand at each event to cater to individual needs. Sticks and Grace also boast their use of a huge range of local produce, from Kossies Free Range Eggs, Siketa Meats, Portarlington Mussels, Leaf Tea (also located on Pakington Street), to Hepburn Springs and Geelong Milk. They use the renowned Allpress Coffee, and take full advantage of

having a successful florist next door by getting great displays from the Flower Dispensary. The seasonal menues always keep a few staples the same, like Nathan's favourite the Cevapi Burger, and the popular Grilled Chicken Wrap, but they also change it up with their new toast range for the ‘in between’ meals, a huge gluten free menu and the new take home range including lasagnas, burgers and wraps. And if you think Nathan wants to keep the late night trade on the river end all to himself, you’d be mistaken “I’d be glad for others to follow suit and bring the customers down to fill up the street with a great late night vibe.” All menus available online and are mobile friendly and downloadable.

Kinder delight with extension funding DELIGHTED: Liberal candidate Paula Kontelj with kinder teacher Jennie McNaughton and senator David Koch.

GEELONG Mayor Darryn Lyons welcomed last month’s announcement by the State Government to contribute funding towards an extension of Fyans Park Kindergarten in Newtown. “I’m delighted that State Government is contributing $350,000 to the extension of Fyans Park Kindergarten”, said Mayor Lyons.

“It’s f itting that in its 50year anniversary year this popular kindergarten will benef it from an extension to more than double capacity and a refurbishment in line with a 21st century early childhood centre.” Kildare Ward Councillor Stretch Kontelj said the extension is much needed. “Fyans Park Kindergarten

has a well-deserved reputation for its high quality program and professional staff, and as a result there is high demand for places.” “The $1.2 million of works will increase the number of places from 29 to 66 and vastly improve off ice space, storage and playground areas”, said Cr Kontelj. “A new shared consulting

space/parenting room will be created to accommodate visiting services including maternal and child health as well as other early childhood professionals.” “This is a big win for the many young families in the Newtown and Geelong West area”, said Cr Kontelj. Community Development Portfolio Councillor

Kylie Fisher said the City of Greater Geelong’s contribution of $863,000 to the $1.2 million project continues Council’s strong investment in early childhood services. “Research continues to tell us that high quality preschool programs pave the way for bright futures”.

Students take up the art challenge THE Arts Show at Newtown Primary School started out four years ago after receiving a grant from the Council for Children’s Week. Each year it has grown and grown, but it has always maintained the focus of being about the Arts and celebrating that as a school community. The Artwork was bright, colourful and creative. The children were able to create visual Arts pieces that showed the skills that they had been working on developing in their Arts classes. This year the Preps created colourful Japanese carp windsocks and bright paper butterflies which they dyed with various colors of food dye as they experimented with color mixing.

They also displayed some of their new work with stitching. The Junior school students created mixed media works of Trees using drawing (pencil, pastel and pen), watercolour painting and paper collage. They looked stunning! Just like the children, each one was colourful and unique! The Middle school students hosted the inaugural ‘Newtown Archies’ based on the concept of the famous Australian portraiture prize called the ‘Archibald Prize’ students drew and painted a staff member from Newtown Primary school! I’m not sure who had the most fun, the children seeing their artwork displayed, or the parents and staff members guessing who was

who! The Senior school students worked diligently for several weeks on creating their major piece of art. The design brief was to create a 3-Dimensional sculpture from cane and tissue. The students worked in groups and incorporated their learning about space and shape as they came up with their ideas. They planned, reflected, recorded and made changes. One of the biggest pieces of learning came about when they discovered that it was when they made ‘mistakes’ or when things didn’t go as planned was when they had to be the most creative to solve the problem and come up with something new or innovative. The students were encouraged

to create their artwork based on a theme that meant something to them. They were also challenged to incorporate something hidden about themselves, possibly a secret wish or fear. Many of these were words that were written onto the tissue paper and then torn up and then glued amongst the paperwork of their sculpture. As well as the Visual Arts there was lots of Music too! We were fortunate enough to have the talented students from the ‘Sweethearts Academy’ based at Matthew Flinders, perform on the night. demonstrated their beautiful and tuneful harmonies This year there were creative market stalls with arts, crafts, books and delicious foods, as well

as a big queue for the jumping castle! A beautiful bike angel was also available for students to pedal and power up the lights in the big glowing towering wings! Pedal power at its best. There were Auction items, lucky numbers, excellence awards, student art installations and even art in the garden! The goal was to celebrate Arts in the community at Newtown Primary School. With the input of caring, interested and supportive parents, staff, students and the wider community and the impetus of a Children’s Week grant from the City of Greater Geelong – I think this was achieved! Now…. Probably time to start planning for next year?.... Kerrie Bedson

ROBBIE LECCHINO

Birthday party fit for a King of the Castle Robbie Lecchino is the owner of King of the Castle cafe which has just celebrated its first birthday. After starting as a ‘hole in the wall’ take away

coffee business, his huge success quickly meant Robbie and the team had to relocate to a bigger venue. They now occupy an old warehouse on

Pakington Street, with ‘the Little Rascal’ coming soon and a summer filled with #thecastlepictures - Pako’s first moonlight cinema!

1. If you could choose three people, dead or alive to come to a dinner party, who would they be? I’d like to have have Wolfgang Puck (only if he was cooking), Kylie Minogue (to discuss things) and probably my mum because she will tell everybody how proud she was and probably insist on doing the dishes and cleaning up afterwards 2. If you could dress up as anyone for a fancy dress party, who would you choose? Probably Hercules, any excuse to get the gear off. 3. What’s the funniest moment you’ve ever had at work with a customer or colleague? Hands down when a lady thought KOTC was a drive through and drove her car in, wound down her window and ordered a coffee. 4. If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? A monkey- because they can get away with murder but we still love them and think they're cute and all. 5. If you could sing one song

on Australian Idol, what song would it be? This could vary depending on when you ask, but right now it would have to be No Doubts "It's my life" 6. If you were on a desert island and could bring three things, what would you bring? * A life supply of tin tuna (with a ring pull) *An old Vietnamese lady to cook me all the Vietnamese I want *And definitely Cal (partner) 7. If you were 80 years old, what would you tell your children? As cliche as it sounds don't waste your life doing things to fill in time, chase your dreams. And don't put me in a retirement home. 8. What was the last gift you gave someone? I bought a watch for Cal 9. If you could be a superhero, what would your super power be? X-ray vision of course. 10. If you won $20 million in the lottery what would you do with it? I’d look after friends and family foremost.

TASTINGNOTES

PROVENANCE Golden Plains CHARDONNAY 2013 When winemaker Scott Ireland handed me his new release Chardonnay he was visibly very excited, and on tasting it is easy to see why. In the glass it is a beautiful golden colour and has aromas of buttery toast

inter mingled with light, crisp fruit. As for taste, it is beautifully balanced, not too oaky, but not austere either. It has a silky smooth texture, vibrant melon and lime characters and a line of acidity which gives it a freshness if drinking now or indicates great cellaring potential. RRP $30

MERMERUS Bellarine PINOT NOIR 2013 Mermerus is a small independent vineyard situated on the Bellarine Peninsula and uses traditional winemaking methods. The fruit is all hand picked which encourages intense and delicate fruit characters.

The 2013 vintage is a rich ruby colour and has chocolatey aromas with hints of spice. On the palate it is velvety smooth with nuances of black cherry and plum. A lingering dry finish makes this a mouth filling wine and leaves one wanting more. Drink now or over the next five years. RRP $25

Mountain bike track for Newtown NEWTOWN is set to get a beginner's mountain bike park. The development of this Bike Park in Newtown will cater to beginner mountain bikes as well as providing a crucial central training hub for any level of mountain bike. The facility will combine three core elements of mountain biking: cross country trails, a pump track, and a skills track. City of Greater Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons has welcomed the State Government funding announcement for the Beginner Mountain Bike Park. This Bike Park will be funded by the City of Greater Geelong who will provide $300,000 and the State Government will contribute $100,000 to the works. Mayor Lyons said “our goal is to have as many people as possible taking part in sport. To achieve this

we need to have the facilities in place for a wide range of sports that appeal to all. “Mountain bike riding has a strong following locally and this new Bike Park will provide a “one stop shop” for mountain bike riders of all levels and abilities.” Sport and Recreation Portfolio holder John Irvine said, “We are hoping this development will increase participation in the sport. “Having a training hub will allow for newcomers to explore an interest or a hobby in mountain bike riding that they may have always had but never had the opportunity to partake in. “The new Mountain Bike Park will allow for this. This park allows for all levels and all types of mountain bikes,” said Cr Irvine. Works are expected to begin late next year.

Vicki Pitcher and the team at V+R have been working hard to bring constant changes at the popular fruit and veg warehouse.

Always change at V+R IF you’re a V+R Fruit regular, chances are you’ve noticed some great changes in the last 12 months. When friends Vicki Pitcher and Steve Palamara took over the fresh fruit warehouse at the Melbourne end of Pakington Street they knew it was going to be hard work. But they’ve put in the time and with a team that Vicki “can't praise enough”, they’ve got a fantastic place for locals and visitors alike to get all sorts of fresh, organic and delicious produce. Every morning at 4.30am, a team starts their shift bringing out all of the fruit and veggies (hand picked by Steve fresh from the market), and stack them for the day. “Who would have thought, I never knew prior (to having this) the huge effort that goes into keeping everything of the highest

quality” says Vicki. And thats one of the keys to the success of V+R, a fantastic team who don’t just turn up for the shifts, but are here because they genuinely love what they do. And for the time and effort they put in, you’d have to love it. Another huge element of what sets V+R apart, is the variety of stock they have – from the well known and loved Irrewarra Sourdough and Zealley Bay through to A Hidden Secret (pre packaged vegan, vegetarian and frustose free meals), ready made meals from Annie's Provedore, Cossies Eggs, the Egg Man and the range of biodynamic eggs from the Spring Plains. On top of this they have an amazing range of cheeses and deli meats, fresh flowers daily and have recently collaborated with local

Cartel Coffee to start serving their coffee. Not only this, but all employees will be trained by Cartel before being let loose on the machines, to guarantee only the best quality coffee! It’s this attitude from Vicki that keeps this tight ship moving “I’m a mum and I don’t have time to return things – I do quality control walks around the venue constantly to make sure everything is what I would take home myself." And V+R is not just a walk in for customers, they also deliver wholesale to local businesses, and will happily head as far as down the Great Ocean Road with their produce. Out the front, the Amazing Yoghurt van is back with her delicious fresh selection of preservative and gluten free yoghurts. And right in front of that Vicki has placed recyled

appled crate planter boxes to create a lovely entry and ambiance. In about three weeks time, there will be carrots popping up, and she intends to harvest all different kinds of vegetables throughout summer. Vicki is

also encouraging local kids to come and help her tend to them. V+R are also running cooking classes with local chefs, with Matt Dempsey on board for the first lessons. Stay tuned on their Facebook page for more details.

WELCOMING FACE: Basil Birgona.

FACETO THE NAME

Paula Kontelj I MUST admit – I’m not hugely into politics. It’s not that I’m not passionate about anything related to my community, but I find politics to generally be a bit over my head, with a lot of people promising the same thing. So when I had the chance to interview our local candidates I was quietly curious, and asked family and friends what they thought I should be asking – Do I go in there and write a soft bio, that’s been read and written before, or do I ask the awkward hard hitting questions? I decided on a bit of both, and I have to admit I came away pretty surprised. In general, I don’t believe in or connect with a majority of the Liberal Policies. Walking into Paula Konteljs house, I was definitely inquisitive as to what I would have in common with her. As a 25 year old, who is about to start a family – What changes are you making that actually affects me? M “I didn’t grow up in a family where politics was

discussed around the table – is this the environment you grew up in, and encouraged you to end up here (as a candidate for the Liberal Party?” P “Not at all. My mum was a school teacher, and dad was a butcher. The most passionate I got was about the clubbing of baby seals in Canada. I can certainly attribute marrying my husband (Stretch Kontelj) to having an impact on my interest, but the biggest turning point would be the Pyramid collapse in Geelong. As a young woman, I lost savings and very nearly lost my job (at the radio station) and we worked for free for six weeks in the hope that someone would come along and buy over the station and we could keep our jobs. I was hugely impressed at this time with the way Jeff Kennett handled everything and this impacted my political beliefs’ M “What is your response to Geelong having a 15 year high of unemployment – this is something close to my heart as I know many people who

have lost jobs. Is something genuinely going to change soon?” P “Alcoa and Ford were always going to shut down – Can public money really prop up private enterprise? Yes there is the East/West Link promising a minimum 150 jobs to people who have lost theirs recently, the Energy Australia call centre which has recently opened opening 300 jobs, the NBIA opened 500 jobs, there is a new Waurn Ponds police station and we are campaigning to bring the ‘Land 400’ project. I’m quietly confident we will get this. M “I polled family and friends about what they wanted me to ask you – It’s probably the most asked questions of any Liberal Candidate, but given that 75 per cent of Australians are in favour of Gay Marriage being legalised, do you think the Liberal Party can avoid this forever? P “Honestly – No I don’t. I am actually in favour of gay marriage, and have many gay friends. I was a celebrant and

31 interview MADELIN BALDWIN

Re-tuned to a political career would happy to marry any gay couple. There will come a time - I would hate to see a time when churches and religious places are picketed because of their opposition to it however. M “And finally Paula, my most hard hitting question – If you were on Australia Idol what song would you choose?” P “Miley Cyrus – The Climb. Because I think it’s in my key range (haha), and it’s about my political journey as well I guess. Aren’t you glad I didn’t say Wrecking Ball?” Other candidates. I also got the chance to have a quick chat to both Greens Candidate Bruce Lacey and Labor Candidate Christine Couzens. Bruce Lacey has lived in Geelong for 13 years, and has two young sons. He currently works in an environmental law firm in Melbourne and previously worked at Deakin as a student advocate. He’s been involved in the Greens for quite a while, and “every time we have managed to increase the Greens vote in (those) elections”. He hopes to achieve a strong investment in the green economy jobs, and ensure a strong renewable sector. And if Bruce could choose one song for Australian Idol? “Oh, Green Day – you know that one from Seinfeld? Time of your life.” (Unfortunately a photograph was not provided in time for our publication deadline). Christine Couzens is a mother of four and lifelong

member of the Geelong community. She has been active in a number of womens groups, and a volunteer with Barwon Crisis Response to natural disasters, as well as the local community sector, predominantly in housing and with disadvantaged youth. She became involved in political life a number of years ago after experiencing first hand the "devestating affects an uncaring and out of touch Government policy can have on people's lives”. If she could sing one song on Australian Idol, it would be none other than Happy by Pharell Williams.” These were Geelong state election candidates as of October 30.The State Election is on November 29. Nominations open on November 5.
