Mullins land a 1484/1 treble!

CARLOW’S own Willie Mullins landed a huge across the cards treble the other weekend but few punters were on it. For once the legendary trainer was a friend of the bookies as he landed the 1,484/1 treble between Limerick and the Curragh. Paul Townend got the ball rolling on Listen Dear in the 2.35pm contest at Limerick, winning at odds of 14/1. Just under two hours later

the Mullins team were celebrating again when 17-yearold Joey Sheridan rode 10/1 shot Royal Illusion to victory in the Irish Cesarewitch at the Curragh. The feature contest at Limerick also went the way of the champion trainer when Cabaret Queen took the Munster National at 4.35pm under Townend and while that selection was popular with punters, it was the bookies who were celebrating!

HOROSCOPES

Little Grebe ready to be relocated (Photo Justin Ivory) I got a phone call the other day from a friend about a strange duck in the industrial estate where he works. He reckoned it was a young duck whose wings were still too small to fly. Apparently, it didn’t look like your usual duck (Mallard) but was a bit more exotic looking. When approached it had made its way into some rough long grass beside his unit. Could I come and take a look? So, I hopped in the car and made my way to the location. By time I got there it had moved inside a warehouse where the owner had locked it in and provided bread and water until my arrival. A quick search revealed the bird hiding in the dark between a filing cabinet and a wall. There staring back at me was not a duck but a Little Grebe! Knowing the area, I reckoned it had probably come from lake/pond which was only about 300m way as the crow flies (but longer by human paths/roads). Placing the frightened thing in a box we relocated it to the lake where it happily took to the water, diving and swimming, and looked in perfect health.

DEAD AT FIRST SIGHT by Peter James

FATHER DELANEY, SILENT WITNESS RTE 1, Thursday 24th October @ 10.15pm

GEMINI MAN Released 11th October 2019

Roy Grace, creation of the award-winning author Peter James, exposes the dark side of the internet in Dead at First Sight. A man waits at a London airport for Ingrid Ostermann, the love of his life, to arrive. Across the Atlantic, a retired NYPD cop waits in a bar in Florida’s Key West for his first date with the lady who is, without question, his soulmate. The two men are about to discover they’ve been scammed out of almost every penny they have in the world - and that neither women exist. Meanwhile, a wealthy divorcée plunges, in suspicious circumstances, from an apartment block in Munich.

Joe Duffy narrates the story of Dublin priest and amateur film-maker Father Jack Delaney, who captured all walks of Irish life on camera in the days before television. Highlights include broadcaster Pat Kenny and his 101-year-old aunt Nora Whyte watching footage of her father and his grandfather performing tricks with an elephant at Dublin Zoo, and 100-year-old Nan White looking for herself in school footage from the 1930s.

Gemini Man is an innovative action-thriller starring Will Smith as Henry Brogan, an elite 51-year-old assassin who’s ready to call it quits after completing his 72nd job. His plans get turned upside down when he suddenly becomes targeted and pursued by a mysterious young operative that seemingly can predict his every move. To his horror, Brogan soon learns that the man who’s trying to kill him is a younger, faster, cloned version of himself. The film is directed by Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Ang Lee and produced by renowned producers Jerry Bruckheimer, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger.

Little Grebe in its natural habitat (Photo Justin Ivory) So, what exactly is a Little Grebe? The Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis), or Dabchick, is one of five species of Grebe found in Ireland. Two species breed here (including the Little Grebe) and three species are non-breeding visitors. Grebes are small to medium sized aquatic birds who hunt by diving underwater. They breed on inland lakes and canals and are regularly seen along the coast in winter. They have short legs set far back on their bodies and lobed toes (not webbed like other aquatic birds), which allow Grebes to propel themselves powerfully through the water, particularly when diving after prey.
