Women appeal for return of rings
Online shoppers look out, there’s a thief about
A WOMAN is hoping “some good person” will return the wedding ring she lost at a hen party in Carlow. Nikki O’Rourke admitted it was “a really, really long shot”. In a Facebook posting she explained: “We were in the Barracks Bar, and from there we moved to the Tower, in the Dinn Rí hotel to see ‘Smash Hits’ playing. This is where I discovered the ring was missing.” A Carlow woman, meanwhile, has issued an appeal for the return of two very precious rings which were stolen from her house. Emma Maher, who lives just outside Ballon, told the website Carlow Live: “One is an engagement ring Alannah’s dad gave me. As most of you know her dad has passed away and that ring was something that meant the world to me but was going to be hers. “The other ring was my grandmother’s wedding ring which she left for me after she passed away.” Anyone with information is asked to contact Tullow Garda Station on 059 918 1160.

Saint’s trail puts village on road to award MYSHALL is in line for a National Enterprise Town Award with its plan for an ‘Irish Camino’ trail. The project is based on the life of St Columbanus who was born in the Carlow village. It traces life of the sixth-century saint from Myshall to Kildare, Meath and Bangor in Co Down, before he left to found monasteries and universities across Europe. They have recruited the help of Carlow, Kildare and Meath county councils and thousands of volunteers in other countries. The village is also the birthplace of St Finnian and next month will unveil statues to both saints. The Myshall Columbanus Commemoration Committee has set out to develop a number of walks and cycle tracks along St Columbanus’s route. Their impressive plans formed
part of the nomination of Myshall for a Bank of Ireland National Enterprise Town Award. The awards aim to reward Irish communities that have come together to encourage enterprise in their area. There is a total prize fund of €157,000 to help these businesses grow. If it wins an award, Myshall plans to build an interpretative centre and a restaurant in the community centre. “It’s a tourism development where tourists wouldn’t come otherwise, deep in the heart of Ireland’s Ancient East,” says Brigid Fox of the Commemoration Committee . The Bank of Ireland National Enterprise Town Awards will take place at the Lyrath Hotel, Kilkenny, on November 28. The overall winner will receive a cash prize totalling €33,000 and there will be other category
awards. The overall winner of the awards in 2017 was Tralee. In total, 38 towns shared in the overall prize fund. St Columbanus was born in 543AD. After studying at a monastery on an island in the River Erne, in what would now be county Fermanagh, he joined the monastery of St Columba in Bangor and then, at the age of 51, set sail for Europe to become a Christian pilgrim. In France, he is thought to have founded around 60 monasteries. He aslo founded monasteries in Italy, and what is now Germany and Switzerland. One of the founders of the EU Robert Schuman. called him: “the patron saint of all those who now seek to build a united Europe.” St Columbanus was mentioned by both Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis on their Irish visits.

HFL say that there is a strong possibility that they can come up with a solution in many cases of serious mortgage arrears. Why local businesses deserve our support Comment AS we count down the days, hours and minutes to Christmas, we at Carlow People would like to make one appeal before the festivities get into full swing: Shop here at home in Wicklow! Local retailers play a massive part in making Christmas such a special time so they really deserve our support. For every €1 you spend with a local independent business, between 50c-70c circulates back into the locality, while shopping online or out of town sees only 5c trickle back. Local businesses not only keep the economy humming, but they also add to the quality of life in our community in other ways. Seeing local businesses thrive also gives you the feeling that you’re living in a vibrant community, a desirable place to live, work and raise a family.
Rose Horan, Ann Nolan and Jim Horan at Family Carers Ireland’s 6th Annual Christmas market in the Green Lane Youth Centre Local businesses are owned and operated by local people, while even the chain stores are managed and run by people who live in our community. They work here, coach the local sports teams, eat in local restaurants and live just down the street – so when you buy in
local shops, you’re supporting your neighbours. Customer service of the kind you thought had disappeared can still be found in the smallest of local businesses. And while all the indications are that the country is beginning to re-emerge after the
worst recession in living memory, we must remember one thing - we are more than just an economy. ety We are a society e, of vibrant people, ve and we deserve rs’ each others’ support.

THE pumpkins haven’t even been composted yet, but you know how it goes... the minute Halloween is over - BAM! Christmas... Christmas everywhere! This may either be music to your ears or bring out your inner grinch, but believe it or not, new studies show that people who put their decorations up earlier are actually happier! And furthermore, homes that are decorated earlier, particularly with outside lights, appear to be “happier homes and “more inviting to neighbours and passers by. According to psychoanalyst Steve McKeown, there are many reasons why someone may choose to deck the halls early, whether they’re just ‘Christmas Crackers’ or just like to get an early jump on things before the madness begins and time gets tight. Usually though, this urge to splurge the tinsel et al stems from a sense of nostalgia which leads people either to try to replicate good memories of Christmas times past or compensate for lack lustre Christmas times from their early years. “In a world full of stress and anxiety people like things that make them happy and Christmas decorations evoke those strong feelings of the
childhood. Decorations are simply an anchor or pathway to those old childhood magical emotions of excitement,â€? Steven explains. “So putting up those Christmas decorations early extends the excitement!â€? It may also be that early decorators have loved ones who have passed and fond memories of Christmases spent together spur them to adorn their homes with items that evoke such memories, maybe they HYHQ KDYH VSHFLÂżF RUQDments from these loved ones, which help them to feel connected to them at this time of year. he most euphoric I have seen Irish soccer fans this year was November 21. Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane had gone. Maybe it wasn’t euphoria, but a release of pent-up frustration and disappointment; either way people were relieved that the boys had gone. What would the FAI do? It seemed to be a toss-up between Mick McCarthy and Stephen Kenny (inset). I didn’t envy the people in the FAI who had to make the choice. Pick the younger man and if it didn’t work out the baying mob would scream ‘He had no experience on the big stage’. Pick Mick and if it didn’t work out the same mob would be crying ‘You should never go back’. In the end they made the bizarre decision to appoint both men. Mick to take over the senior side (with Terry Connor and Robbie Keane) with Stephen in charge of U21 side until 2020 at which point he will succeed Mick. I found it all a bit strange, a bit bizarre. Killer Dolphin Alert
Orca or Killer Whale (picture from wikicommons) APOLOGIES for the sensational, tabloid, click-bait style headline but it got your attention though! As I write this the wildlife story of the week has to be the sighting of two killer dolphins off North County Dublin! Of course I am referring to killer whales (Orcinus orca) or in Irish Crain Dhubh which are the largest member of the dolphin family. The sighting of the pair of killer whales by trawlerman James Mac Cluskey and his crew took place over a two hour period 6 miles east of Rockabill on the afternoon of Saturday 17th November. The animals were so close to the boat at times the crew were able to capture decent video footage of them on their phones. James believes that one of them was an individual known as John Coe (W01). John Coe is part of the Scottish West Coast Community group from the Hebrides. Animals from this group are recorded in Irish Waters most years. Given that James indicated in his report to the IWDG (Irish Whale and Dolphin Group) that he believed the killer whales he observed were actively hunting either seals or harbour porpoise this would strongly suggest that they belong to the Scottish group. Killer whales in the North Atlantic come in two forms or ‘ecotypes’. One ecotype preys predominantly on fish and the other ecotype prey exclusively on other marine mammals such as seals, porpoises, dolphins and whales. The Scottish pod is of the second ecotype. Killer Whale sightings in Irish waters are not that unusual with 216 validated sightings in the last 25 years and certainly there is plenty of killer whale activity in our waters that goes undetected. This current sighting is the second in three weeks from Dublin with a sighting of a pair of killer whales 22 miles east of Skerries by fisherman Rory Wilde on the 30th October.
