Carlow Tips for finding owners a good builder spend €10m renovating homes By Jake Maxwell
LOOKING for a good builder is a time-consuming task. Whatever is the type of the house you are going for, you must ensure that it is a good quality one from a reputable builder. Here are some tips to help you choose a builder. Start with a list of potential builders. Make use of the property section of your local newspapers to search for builders and projects. Check with friends and relatives for recommendations and opinions. If they recently had the same work done, ask them about the builders they were associated with and how was their experience with them. Do not be fooled by fake builders. Some builders fraudulently claim membership of trade associations, so verify if one is a ERQD ¿GH PHPEHU RU QRW
It’s time for homework! Once you have prepared a list of potential builders, now it is time to start enquiring about the potential builders and people who have bought homes from them. Visit the builders personally and ask your queries. Check with them if they are insured or not. They should have insurance to protect themselves and to deal their liability to you in the case of property damage or an injury or accident. It would also be good to visit a few recently built homes by the builder. Try to meet several home owners and collect a few random opinions. Ask them if they are happy with their homes, do they face any issues, was the builder prompt in addressing their issues, etc. This step helps you to get a genuine review in most cases. If you are meeting a number of homeowners who have bought homes from various builders, it would be wise to note down the
information you collect so that you can make an elaborate comparison later.
Short list and quotation Based on your meeting with the builders and the reviews you have collected, short list the builders and ask for quotations. The quotation should cover details like clearance, site maintenance, material supplies, etc. Ask for complete details in writing. Also, enquire if any approvals or permissions are required.
Choose quality and value! While making a decision based on the collected quotation, make it a point to pay attention to the quality of the construction features. Make sure about the quality of the carpeting, cabinetry, paint, etc. Do not hesitate to ask quesWLRQV DQG FRQ¿UP WKLQJV EHIRUH PDNLQJ WKH ¿QDO FRQWUDFW VR WKDW you do not have to regret later!

Awesome Avocet HOROSCOPES
FOR BIRDERS, Spring and Autumn are their favourite times of the year, as with huge movements of birds on migration, anything could turn up anywhere. Of the two, autumn is the season that holds the most anticipation and excitement as, after completion of the breeding season the numbers of birds on the move are substantially larger than during the spring migration. By the time this goes to print, Storm Ali will have been and gone, and in all likelihood will have brought some unusual feathered visitors with it – so keep an eye out on all headlands and coastal locations for something out of the ordinary. One of the more distinctive birds that sometimes visit our shores is the Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta) and one turned up on Bull Island, Co. Dublin on September 16th and was still there as I write this. With its striking black and white plumage, long legs and slender body, uniquely long, thin, strongly up-curved bill, the Avocet is a handsome and graceful wader. It is well known as the emblem of the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds). While in recent years one or two individuals have been turning up in Ireland, most sightings have been in Wexford, with a group of 5 turning up there for a few days in April 2017. It is 25 years since an Avocet was last sighted at Bull Island. With breeding populations and wintering populations increasing in the UK it is hoped that the Avocet will start to breed in Ireland. There have historically been sporadic records of Avocets breeding in Wexford but no such records since the first half of the 20th Century. The genus name Recurvirostra comes from the Latin recurvus which means “curved backwards, and rostrum which means “bill. When feeding it sweeps this distinctive bill from side to side through shallow water to seize shrimps, insect larvae, small crustaceans and worms.
THE CHALK MAN by CJ Tudor
THIS CROWDED HOUSE Wednesdays RTE 2 9.30pm
THE NUN ROI Rating: - 16
You can feel it in the woods, in the school and in the playground; you can feel it in the houses and at the fairground. You can feel it in most places in the small town of Anderbury . . . the fear that something or someone is watching you. It began back in 1986, at the fair, on the day of the accident. That was when 12-year-old Eddie met Mr Halloran - the Chalk Man. He gave Eddie the idea for the drawings: a way to leave secret messages for his friends and it was fun, until the chalk men led them to a body. Thirty years later, Ed believes the past is far behind him, until an envelope slips through the letterbox.
This Crowded House is a new four part series for RTÉ2 that intervenes in the not-sounusual phenomenon of adults in their 20s and 30s who are living at home with their parents. Presented by Brendan Courtney, This Crowded House follows the journey of eight different Irish families as their adult children try to figure out how to move out. Brendan helps these adult children explore their options in this current tricky housing market, as well as helping them get on the right financial path to independence, calling on the necessary expertise where needed.
When a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania takes her own life, a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together they uncover the order’s unholy secret. Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront a malevolent force in the form of the same demonic nun that first terrorised audiences in “The Conjuring 2, as the abbey becomes a horrific battleground between the living and the damned.

Plane - noun - a flat or level surface; a longitudinal section through the axis of a column; any of various woodworking instruments for paring, truing, or smoothing Ali Kirby creates sculptural assemblages and installations that physically respond to the built environment. Ordinary construction materials are re-used to create seemingly solid structures that reveal their fragility upon closer inspection. Her approach to materials is intuitive, often using muted colours, soft textures and hard edges to create various surfaces and forms normally associated with architecture.
The Stateless at VISUAL documents the journey that the Rohingya community in Carlow have taken, and reflects on the tragic inhumanities that continue to be inflicted in Myanmar. Photographs taken by Mohammed Rafique in 2017 show the suffering endured by the Rohingya in Myanmar and the camps in Bangladesh; drawings and paintings reflect on the communities cultural identity and an archive of information about the Genocide of the Rohingya calls on the public to witness and be aware of this crisis, and the lives of those who have been displaced.
