O’Connell Street set for massive revamp THE Capital’s iconic O’Connell Street is to get a massive revamp which will see it “re-established as Dublin’s pre-eminent street�, under new proposals for the area. The “unique character and vibrancy� of Moore Street will also be returned to its former glory as part of the revamp of the north inner city. Property group Hammerson, which also owns Dundrum shopping centre, has scrapped

its existing planning permission for the â‚Ź1.25b “Dublin Centralâ€? shopping complex. Plans for 200 units co-living A PLANNING application has been lodged for a development of more than 200 coliving homes in south Dublin. If approved, the building in DĂşn Laoghaire, planned by Bartra Capital Property, will be the largest such development in the country. The co-living model provides en-suite bedrooms with shared, communal living areas and is similar to student accommodation but aimed at young, working professionals. Co-living has only recently been included in planning regulations. Fake euro taxi scam warning

A DUBLIN taxi driver has warned other operators about an ongoing scam in the capital where a group of people are trying to pay for fares with counterfeit notes. The driver released footage of a recent fare where he caught a passenger out red handed as he tried to pay with fake money. The passenger hands over the cash while the car is stood still and immediately, the driver holds it up to the light. Suspicious, the driver then uses a money detector pen to ÂżQG RXW LI WKH QRWH LV D GXG RU not. The passenger visibly becomes uneasy when the driver shows him that he’s checking the note. The driver tells him “I can’t accept thatâ€? to which the passenger replies: “Are you serious?â€?. He also said that he “had no cardâ€? and was unable to pay for the fare as it was the only form of payment that he had. Instead of challenging the pas senger, he just tells him to leave the taxi. There has been reports in recent weeks about tourists using fake notes.

THE 15th annual Dublin Dance Festival opened this week in the capital - and it promises to be a celebration of brilliant dance from across the globe. Robin in song. (Photo Justin Ivory) IT’S MAY so it is time to set your clocks early to get up and celebrate the beauty of birdsong with one of nature’s great events – the dawn chorus. If you have never been privy to this magical experience, then I urge you to at least once make the effort to drag yourself out of bed before dawn. You will be in for a treat. What is the dawn chorus? It is the time of day when birds are at their most vocal and it reaches a peak in May in the Northern Hemisphere as by this time most of our summer migrants have arrived in and join with our resident birds. The highest number of individuals and range of species are singing this month to create the best free daily concert you’ll ever hear! Which birds sing? It is mainly male birds that sing with one notable exception being the Robin, where females also sing (but mainly in Autumn/Winter). Why do birds sing? Two main reasons; to mark and defend a territory, and to attract a mate. Why sing at dawn? Many reasons. It is an efficient use of time as it is still too dark to search for food. It let’s rival males know you survived the night and the territory is still occupied. There is not much predator activity at this time of the day, so it is safer. Females are also at their most fertile early in the morning. There is less air and wind turbulence, and less background noise, so sound carries further. International Dawn Chorus Day Sunday May 5th marks International Dawn Chorus Day and Sunday May 12th marks National Dawn Chorus Day and there will be events happening across the country. You can join me at 4am in the wonderful Killruddery estate in Bray on both days where I will be leading walks followed by breakfast (need to register in advance).

No one safe from terror attacks

hile we basked in a mini heatwave here at Easter, Sri Lanka was hit by terrorist attacks that sent shockwaves around the world. Nobody is safe from terrorism or atrocities, no matter how progressive or insulated you think your society is - we in Ireland have had our fair share and the rise of the New IRA is a cause for concern. In the modern, globalised world where we all travel extensively for work and holidays, being caught up in

Three Rock Hockey Club hosted the Masters Interprovincial 2019 Tournament from April 26-28. Ladies Hockey teams representing Leinster, Munster, Connacht, Ulster & South East all participated with Leinster Over 40’s, Ulster Over 45’s & 50’s winning the championship within their groups something like what happened in Sri Lanka is unfortunately on all our radars. The scale of the attacks in Sri Lanka was staggering. Consecutive suicide bombings at Christian churches in Negombo, Colombo and Batticaloa while Easter services were taking place. Coordinated attacks on luxury hotels in Colombo, the

country’s commercial capital. Attacks in Dematagoda and Dehiwala also. In total more than 250 dead, including more than 40 foreign nationals. More than 500 injured. Responsibility seems to lie with people associated with National Thowheeth Jama’ath, a local militant Islamist group with suspected

foreign links. Retaliation for the attacks against Muslims in Christchurch in New Zealand in March cannot be ruled out as a motive, although it is too early WR FRQFOXGH GH¿QLWLYHO\ WKDW WKLV was the case. These shootings – which left 50 dead and the same number injured - were carried out at two mosques by an Australian white supremacist.

Sri Lanka is no stranger to terrorism. Tamil militants looking for an independent Tamil Eelam state in northeastern Sri Lanka waged a terror campaign for many years. Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), A Marxist-Leninist political movement, were involved in separate armed uprisings in 1971 and 1987-89.

Most of Sri Lanka’s previous terrorist attacks have targeted Buddhists (the country’s religious make-up is 70% Buddhist, 12% Hindu, 10% Islam and 7% Christian), so attacking Christians is a new departure. Terrorism knows no religious or geographical boundaries though, and kills indiscriminately. Hatred is a global currency and whether spent with bombs, guns or words it produces the same grim and inevitable consequences. Victims of terrorism have had their lives cruelly cut short. 7KHLU SRWHQWLDO VQX൵HG RXW Their families have to live on without loved ones, meaning that the true cost of the attacks is more brutal and extensive than the number of casualties. When will we learn a better way? We’ve had our own terrorist past here and moved on from it, although the spectre of it is still in the shadows. Humans have the intelligence and capabilities to resolve their GL൵HUHQFHV E\ SHDFHIXO PHDQV but increasingly choose to bypass these.
