ORGANISED crime gangs driving high-speed vehicles are using the M9 to rob Kilkenny homes and businesses before returning to the motorway to make their escape. And despite Government promises to erect CCTV along key sections of the motorway to combat local crime, there is no evidence that anyone is actually monitoring the footage, Kilkenny TD Bobby Aylward told the Dáil. Deputy Aylward was speaking at a debate on a motion on rural crime tabled by the Rural Independent Group in Dáil Eireann last week. He said criminals are “terrorising” local communities and asked the Junior Justice Minister David Stanton to clarify what sections of the motorway are being monitored via CCTV. Deputy Aylward said: “Two motorways go through my constituency of CarlowKilkenny, the M9 and M7. Organised gangs are targeting businesses, robbing them and using the motorway to aid their escape.”
“Billions of euro of taxpayers’ money have been spent on upgrading our motorways over recent decades, and the advantages of this investment speak for themselves, but we must do more to police our national primary routes H൵HFWLYHO\ ´ Deputy Aylward said one text alert group in his constituency LV VHHNLQJ FODUL¿FDWLRQ IURP the local authority and gardai as to who is responsible for monitoring CCTV footage along the motorway. He told the Dáil: “We all know of terrible cases in which they have 40 or 50 cases against them and they are out on bail.”

KILKENNY has received a major employment boost after food giant Glanbia announced plans to create up to 80 jobs at a new chess manufacturing facility at its Belview plant. The news has come as a huge boost to the region amid growing fears over the potential impact Brexit may have on food producing companies in the South East. The 80 full time jobs will be created as part of a new deal to build a new continental cheese manufacturing facility at Belview. Continental cheese includes types of Gouda and Edam cheeses. The new â‚Ź140m plant will be commissioned by 2022 and will have a production capacity of 450 million litres of milk a year. A further 100 temporary jobs will be created during the construction phase. Glanbia Ireland said milk used
in the production process on site will be sourced from local suppliers and the cheese will be marketed and sold to global customers. Glanbia Ireland chief executive Jim Bergin said the new partnership deal will create a new route to market for Glanbia Ireland suppliers’ milk. “This proposed new investment is now required to diversify our product mix and to ensure that our suppliers have the RSSRUWXQLW\ WR IXOÂżO WKHLU JURZWK ambitions,â€? Brexit, in terms of developing new products and new markets,â€? the minister said. In July 2018, Glanbia plc said it plans to open a new â‚Ź130 million mozzarella cheese-manufacturing plant in Co Laois in a bid to bolster its position as Europe’s leading mozzarella manufacturer. WILDLIFE with Justin Ivory
Climate Case Ireland
BOOK of the week
TV SHOW of the week
FILM of the week
HOROSCOPES
I KNOW the title at the top of the column each says ‘Wildlife’ but really you should read that to include wider environmental issues not just wildlife. The biggest issue of our generation (in fact probably the biggest issue in human history) is that of climate change. By the time you read this column, depending which paper you read (the column appears in 7 papers in 6 counties), Climate Case Ireland will either be about to start, under way or just finished. So what is Climate Case Ireland? It is the name given to the case that FIE (Friends of the Irish Environment) are taking against the Irish government on behalf of every citizen in this country. This legal action is the first case in Ireland in which citizens are seeking to hold their government accountable for its role in knowingly contributing to dangerous levels of climate change. FIE argue that the government’s approval of the National Mitigation Plan in 2017 was in violation of Ireland’s Climate Action and Low Carbon Development Act 2015 (the Climate Act 2015), the Constitution and human rights obligations. We also claim that the Plan falls far short of the steps required by the Paris Agreement on climate change. The case was inspired by similar actions in other countries, in particular the highly successful case in the Netherlands where the group Urgenda won their case and the follow-up appeal against the Dutch government. The Dutch court held that the State is acting unlawfully (in contravention of the duty of care under the European Convention on Human Rights) by failing to pursue a more ambitious reduction in carbon emissions. The Irish case is asking the High Court to quash Ireland’s National Mitigation Plan and request the government to remake it in accordance with the law. This will involve making an ambitious emissions reduction plan which will help avert dangerous climate change. The case starts on 22nd January and is scheduled to last 4 days. To find out more and sign up your support to the case please visit www. climatecaseireland.ie

Documentary series presented by physicist Brian Cox. Professor Brian Cox travels around Australia to explore how the size of a creature is connected to the forces acting on its environment. From the safety of a steel cage, he faces a great white shark and explains how the streamlined contours of this massive predator have been shaped by the physics of water. In Queensland’s rainforests, he explains how insects and other smaller creatures can appear to defy gravity, using electrostatic force to scale vertical windows.
From Unbreakable, Bruce Willis returns as David Dunn as does Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price, known also by his pseudonym Mr. Glass. Joining from Split are James McAvoy, reprising his role as Kevin Wendell Crumb and the multiple identities who reside within, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey Cooke, the only captive to survive an encounter with The Beast. Following the conclusion of Split, Glass finds Dunn pursuing Crumb’s superhuman figure of The Beast in a series of escalating encounters, while the shadowy presence of Price emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men.

The Lonesome Ace Stringband brings grit, skill and abandon to old-time, Appalachian folk songs and fiddle/banjo tunes. These are songs and tunes for life and all of its occasions: festivals, dances, wars, parties and funerals. The music comes from a tradition that has inspired and brought together generations of people. Its themes are love, loss, hard work and hardship, faith, and everyday life. They bring a deep respect for the roots of the music, a keen sense of innovation to the performance and material and a passion for the sound that transcends both.
A trip to Jerpoint Glass Studio offers a truly unique experience. Watching glass blown by hand is a most exciting spectacle! You will see the skilled glassblowers perform their magic as they turn flowing red-hot molten glass into the beautiful shapes. In the adjacent building you will find our shop and gallery where the full Jerpoint collection is available including one-off glass blown pieces and seconds available at reduced prices. Nearby are walking trails for those interested in beautiful scenery. Artisan cafes and restaurants also available.
Fishamble are delighted to bring together Niall Buggy and David Ganly once again, in this production which critics called ‘superb’ (Irish Times), ‘phenomenal’ (Sunday Independent), and ‘outstanding’ (RTÉ Arena). In Sebastian Barry’s unique style, On Blueberry Hill features best of friends and worst of enemies Christy and PJ, played by Niall Buggy and David Ganly. This new play is bursting with humanity, as it explores murder, forgiveness, survival and ultimately, love in the prison of the human heart. Truly gripping.

The Black Abbey of Kilkenny is a Catholic priory of the Dominican Order dedicated to the Holy and Undivided Trinity. It was founded in 1225 by William Marshal the younger, Earl of Pembroke. The name derives from the use of the term “Black Friars” to describe members of the Dominican Order. Steeped in history, in 1558, Ireland was under the rule of Elizabeth, a Protestant queen and the property of the priory was confiscated by the crown.
Eva O’Leary is an artist with a distinctive vision of contemporary society, which results in work that is reflective, challenging and always compelling. The Butler Gallery is delighted to present an exhibition by New York based photographer, her first in Ireland. This exhibition includes previously unseen work from her award-winning series ‘Spitting Image’, portraits of American girls, photographed through a two-way mirror as they respond to their own reflection. Open Daily/Free Admission.
