Gardaí embarrassed by Covid gathering TWO gardaí tested positive for for Covid-19 after attending a social gathering at the Garda station in Tramore. An inquiry is being conducted into the event which marked the transfer last month of a colleague who had been promoted. The two gardaí are not thought to have contracted the virus at the event. They tested positive after being in contact with an infected person and divulged their attendance as part of the contact-tracing process. No officers who attended the event were working and no alcohol was consumed, according to the Sunday Independent, which first reported the story. The newspaper quoted a Garda source as saying the situation was “embarrassing”. The Garda press office subesquently issued a statement saying that on Novembner 13 “Garda personnel in attendance and working in accordance with Covid-19 guidelines made a brief presentation to mark the occasion of a

transfer, complying with social distancing guidelines”. It explained that the next day “a person was identified and contacted by HSE as a close contact of a family member who had tested positive for Covid-19. This person also subsequently tested positive for Covid-19. This person was appropriately in work prior to being contacted by HSE.” The statement insisted: “There is currently no impact, nor has there been any impact, on any services of An Garda Síochána as a result of Covid-19.” A chief superintendent has been appointed to lead an investigation into the gathering. The invesigation will seek to establish if the event at the station may have breached Covid-19 regulations. The legislation states that “a person shall not organise or cause to be organised” a social or recreational event unless it is held outdoors and “all reasonable steps” are taken to ensure that it is attended by people living in no more than two households.

WATERFORD athletes, Jessie and Thomas Barr, have launched a campaign to get people running on a regular programme. ‘Run January - don’t let it run you’ is the message of the Runuary campaign, launched in Dunmore East and developed by Irish Life Health in conjunction with Athletics Ireland . It will start on January 1 and will encourage runners, from beginners to the more experienced, to commit to
challenging but realistic running programmes, with a target distance to be completed by the end of the month. “While we can’t remove many of the unknowns from our lives at the moment, we can add some sense of certainty through our daily actions,” said Jessie, who in recent years has switched from competing on the track to supporting some of Ireland’s leading Olympic hopefuls as a performance
sports psychologist. “ Having a weekly running routine can provide stability. It can help us feel more at ease by enabling us to regain some control of our lives”. There are programme options available for training three, four or five days a week, building up to completing a selected targeted distance on Sunday, January 31. Entry is free of charge and runners can sign up at irishlifehealth.ie.
Top class: 5 schools win awards for science
FIVE Waterford primary schools have received awards for their science work. The Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Discover Primary Science and Maths Awards have gone to Ballymacarbry National School, Ballyduff National School, Kilrossanty National School, Fionnabhair National School, and Scoil Naomh Seosamh The Discover Science programme aims to increase interest in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) among primary school students and teachers. The awards recognise the achievements of children and teachers in the application of STEM in their curriculum. Minister for Innovation and Science, Simon Harris, sent his congratulations to the schools. “Science and maths matter now more than ever,” he said. “We need our primary school students to become the next generation of innovative leaders, creative thinkers, and problem solvers. These awards show how excited we can all be for the future.”
Minister gives Quays plan his seal of approval THE transformational development of Waterford’s North Quays took another step forward with a visit by the the Minister for Housing and Local Government, Darragh O’Brien . Mr O’Brien visited the site l ast week, a month after he announced €110m in state funding for the development which is a key elelement in a complete reshaping of the city centre. He said the project would be a major boost for the entire South East region. “The potential here is massive for jobs, for further inward investment, private investment, for housing and new commercial development,” the minister said. “I think it will be transformational.” The project will bring reridential amd retail development and a hotel to the North Quays. When it is completed, the North Quays will be linked by a new bridge to a transport hub and a new plaza which, in turn, will link to to an extension of the Greenway. But a local politician says the massive development is “only a fraction of what is needed to transform our city into a vibrant space for all”. Úna Dunphy, of People Before Profit, welcomed the development, but said: “We need to be sure that the sale of sites with planning permission at the North Wharf and Michael Street at the knockdown price of €9m, is the beginning of a process of transforming Waterford city
centre into a people-friendly living area and positioning the city as a transport hub for the South East”.. She said it was essential that the Waterford council gets assurances this project will be undertaken and completed. “The development at the North Quay must avoid the high-rent gated community type residential development and must create a real community joined to the city centre by a new bridge.,” Ms Dunphy said in a statement. “The location of both railway and bus stations on the north of the river is essential to the reopening and development of the South East Rail network reopening Rosslare to Waterford and Limerick. “This is essential in view of the vital importance of the Rosslare and Bellview Ports to the post Brexit freight business and the need to radically reduce emissions from road freight. “We believe that the 2020 2028 Development Plan offers a real opportunity to reimagine our city and county. “A tree lined Linear Park along the South Quay’s, from Rice Bridge to Adelphi Quay with a river side boardwalk, mooring areas, landing stages, kiosks, sculpture, shrubs, seating and performance areas etc., along with walkways and a light rail loop line should revitalise Waterford’s spectacular riverside location.”
We’re paying, and staying, with plastic
THE Covid crisis has led to a big increase in contactless payments across Waterford. Some 80% of consumers here have used mostly card to pay for goods and services in-store during the pandemic, according to a report published by Payment Acceptance, a marketing alliance between the Bank of Ireland and EVO Payments International. Before the crisis just 55% of local consumers say they used contactless payment. Card payment has been encouraged by many shops to avoid contact with coins and notes. The ability to tap and pay has
further reduced contact. It seems likely that the trend towards contactless payments will continue when the pandemic has ended. Around 50% of consumers in Munster believe they will be cashless in the next five years or already consider themselves to be, according to Payment Acceptance. It reports that almost half of all consumers believe that either some or all physical cash should be withdrawn in the next 10 years. “Consumers are using contactless payment on a massive scale,” said Brian Cleary, Managing Director of BOI Payment Acceptance. “

Cashback due for mortgages wrongly sold HUNDREDS of homeowners in Waterford city and county could be in line for substantial compensation because their mortgage was mis-sold by banks during the Celtic Tiger years. This is the view of mortgage expert Ben Hoey, a Chartered Certified Accountant and former investment banker. He claims that many mortgages were mis-sold across Waterford and that compensation could be as much as €40,000 per mortgage, based on a national average mortgage of €270,000 at the time. A mis-sold mortgage is one where the bank took no proper consideration of the suitability of the loan for the borrower and no assessment of their ability to repay.
Characteristics of a mis-sold mortgage include: *A mortgage ending after retirement age; *No proof of income requested (also known as self-certification); *No evidence of ability to pay; *Interest only payments with no plan for the repayment of the capital sum borrowed. “A substantial number of mortgages sold between 20022010 in Waterford were totally unsuitable for the consumers,” said Ben Hoey . “The issuing banks did not follow the rules and principles set out under the various Consumer Protection Codes, Codes of Practice, internal handbooks and Central Bank guidelines. “From my experience, mis-
selling was widespread before 2010, but particularly in the years 2005 to and 2008. The mis-selling of mortgages is well established in the UK where compensation for consumers has been obtained through the UK Financial Services Ombudsman.’’ Mr Hoey said compensation for mis-sold mortgages is available for homeowners in Waterford through the complaints process of the Irish Financial Services and Pensions Ombudsman. Possible victims of misselling are advised to request a free review of their mortgage on Misselling.ie where they will receive guidance on whether they have a basis for a complaint to the credit institution and/or the Financial Services Ombudsman.

Old name for port’s €1m new pilot boat
THE Port of Waterford is to invest almost €1m in a new pilot boat. It will be named Port Láirge, which is not only the county’s name but the name long associated with a steampowered dredger that served Waterford for more than 70 years until the 1980s. The 15-metre long pilot boat will provide safer working conditions for pilotage personnel. Safehaven Marine, a company based in Youghal, Co Cork, won
a tendering process to design and build the new boat which will be fitted with the latest marine technology and is due to come into use in September next year. Captain Darren Doyle, Harbourmaster at the Port of Waterford, said: “We look forward to the new Port Láirge being brought into service next year. Our pilot boat crew and pilots do vitally important work year-round and it is essential that they have the best possible vessel to operate from.”

Warning - this sport can seriously damage your health
T
Michael Wolsey
I had the pleasure of meeting the great out-half when he was inducted into rugby’s Hall of Fame in 2008. He was a lovely, modest man, with a fund of interesting stories about his rugby days and his career as a surgeon in Ireland and Africa. He reflected on how the sport
had changed and he paid tribute to great modern players. He would not, he thought, have wished to compete in the professional game. He was shocked to discover that players from opposing teams no longer enjoy a dinner together on the evening after an international match. The camaraderie of this event - where the referee was guest of honour and ceremonially toasted - was almost as important to Kyle as the game itself. Dr Kyle also had concerns
he late Jack Kyle is regarded by many as the finest athlete ever to play rugby for Ireland. An amazing solo try he scored against France in 1953 inspired the correspondent of The Irish Times to poetry: They seek him here, They seek him there, Those Frenchies seek him everywhere. That paragon of craft and guile, That damned elusive Jackie Kyle
about the health risks involved in playing such a physical sport at professional level. We were only chatting and he didn’t press the point. “I have doubts about it,” he said, or words to that effect. His doubts have been brought back to me by the news that former England international Steve Thompson is suffering from dementia at the age of 42. He blames rugby and, along with six other former professionals, is suing the sport’s governing bodies for failing in their duty of care. Steve Thompson’s rugby world was vastly different from the amateur game enjoyed by Jack Kyle. Kyle played for Queen’s University and a club called North of Ireland. He didn’t play every week because there was no league to organise regular fixtures. All club games were

what would now be classed as ‘friendlies’. For Irish players, the only really competitive games were three inter-provincials each year and four internationals against the other Five Nations teams. There would be visits from southern hemisphere sides and Kyle might go touring with Ireland or the Lions. But, tours apart, he would have played no rugby in the off season. And the game was less physical. I am looking now at old black and white pictures of Kyle. He was extremely fit but his build was quite sleight. Reports describe him as ‘wiry’ and ‘trim’. The same could be said of Kyle’s team-mates. There were no giants. It was a hard game but there were few bone-crunching tackles and scrums were not the menacing mastodons they have become.
A modern player meets more aggression in a day’s training than Kyle would have faced in a year. Not that Kyle often did a day’s training. Like the rest of the squad he was a full-time student or had a day job. Rugby, played as Kyle knew it, was a safe sport. I don’t think the same can be said of the modern game. There are limits to the amount of punishment a human body can absorb without long term consequences and, when I look at a young man like Johnny Sexton, limping from the field week after week, I feel that modern rugby is pushing its players beyond those limits. Some sports were always and obviously dangerous - professional boxing being the one that leaps to mind. But others have only become dangerous since they turned professional. Tennis, even at its highest level, was an amateur sport until the relatively recent 1970s. There were fewer tournaments
and the play was less intense. Competing at the top on a never-ending circuit has left some players burnt out by their early twenties and others with injuries that will haunt them for the rest of their lives. Gymnasts suffer for their sport and so do some swimmers, their problems made worse by the fact that they start so young. Professionalism is also taking its toll on runners, jumpers and all types of competitors on track and field. Like rugby, these sports were intended for recreation. They could be tough workouts that required high levels of stamina and fitness, and, like most things in life, they had risks - but they were not hazardous in the long term. Turning them from recreations to occupations has made them dangerous. Should rugby balls and tennis rackets now carry a warning? Caution: these sports can seriously damage your health

book of the week
with Justin Ivory
It’s December and officially winter and with it comes an influx of visitors from Scandinavia. Sporting spiky hairdos, heavy eye-makeup and some flashy outer-ware between them, these tourists could well be a raggle-taggle bunch of punks, goths and new romantics! So, who are they and why are they here? They are wild foragers and they are here to feast on our food. In this case they are wild foragers of the feathered and non-humankind, so have a perfect right to stuff themselves on mother nature’s larder. This mobile marauding club consists of a trio of members – Fieldfare, Redwing and Waxwing.

Wonder woman 1984 In cinemas now
For more than 50 years Michael Wolsey has been writing for newspapers in Ireland and England — including this newspaper. This collection is a ramble down memory lane, a wry look at issues that are sometimes serious, more often humorous. The articles open a window on recent social history with all its fads and fashions. The changing issues of politics and the changing face of pubs get their place alongside the author’s frequent battles with public transport and modern technology. This is a book to dip into — to read, re-read and enjoy. It is published by Amazon and can only be ordered online, in e-reader and paperback.
IN a world exclusive, two of the biggest names in entertainment come together for a special one-off show, as the music icon is interviewed by the Golden Globe-winning actor. McCartney talks about his writing process, which has produced some of the best-loved and most performed songs ever. As a producer and musician himself, Idris is fascinated by the Beatles legend’s prolific output and delves deep to find out what inspires him to continue to innovate creatively, as he releases his 26th post-Beatles album, McCartney III.
Wonder Woman 1984 — or just WW84 is the sequel to the 2017 movie which made a big splash and screamed out for a follow-up. Why is it called Wonder Woman 1984? Drum roll please . . . because it is set in 1984. Perhaps the producers thought that the Generation Z viewers, who only care about their own futures and very little else, would be surprised to know the eighties actually existed. Or maybe it’s just a way to sneak in a little history lesson and give them a break from cancelling anyone over the age of 23. Otherwise, expect to see a wonderful woman kick some serious ass. Which is no bad thing.

Redwing (Photo Andreas Trepte www.phot-natur.net) The Redwing (Turdus iliacus) is also a member of the thrush family. Smaller than our Song Thrush, they have a very distinctive creamy stripe above the eye (supercilium) and orange-red flank/underwing markings. It has brought people together in villages, towns and cities across Ireland to help others. So, even though we have to stay apart, we can still stand together for the world’s most vulnerable people. AS Christmas approaches and the focus is all on the big day, it’s all too easy to take the eyes off the little prizes, the comfort food that will warm up the winter evenings mid-week. There are lots of variations on this classic, but we like this one because it includes a splash of veg and, well, before Christmas that’s no bad thing for the waistline. The veg, in this instance, is shredded sprout. Did some mention sprouts already? Yes. Sorry. But it is almost Christmas.
THIS fantasy drama includes Michael Caine and Angelina Jolie in its stellar cast and is a loose homage to the stories of Peter Pan and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Here, Peter and Alice are brother and sister in biracial family (of course) filled with all manner of adult problems — the parents, Jack (David Oyelowo) and Rose (Angelina Jolie) deal with addiction, money problems, booze and the death of a child, while Peter and Alice escape into a whimsical fantasy world full of familiar elements from their own storybooks. It sounds bonkers. But for Christmas, an absolute hoot. Bring the hip flask.

15th Anniversary MARY KIELY
Deep in our hearts, Your memory is kept, To love and to cherish, And never forget.
It was a sad December morning, I stood by an open grave, I watched them lower, The mother I loved, And tried so hard to be brave, I knew I could not awaken, Your silent remains in the clay, So I laid my heart down beside you, And sadly walked away, The next time we meet, Will be at Heaven’s door, You will be there to greet me, And I will cry no more, I’ll put my arms around you, And kiss your smiling face, Only then will my broken heart, Fall gently into place, It’s hard to put on paper, The feelings we have inside, Of a broken hearted family, Who have missed you since you died, You often used to say to us, You’ll miss me when I’m gone, Believe me I never knew, That heartaches last so long. - From Trevor and Stephen No length of time can take away, Our thoughts of you from day to day, Time slips by and life goes on, But from our hearts you are never gone, And as each day dawns and starts anew, And as each day ends we think of you, And in between no matter where, Deep in our hearts you are always there. - Always remembered by Trevor, Leanne, Shiona, Brona and Tommy. Although I never knew you Nanny, Because you’re in Heaven above, Please be my guardian angel, And watch over me with love. - From Aisling and your grandaughter Harper Rose and grandson Billy. Memories have such lovely ways Of bringing back our yesterdays, As you were you will always be, Very special in our memories.
- Lovingly remembered by all the family Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour).
