Threats halt stray horses round-up CONTRACTORS employed to round up stray horses have been subjected to “an intolerable level of intimidation” in some parts of Waterford city. The situation is so bad that the City and County council now fears it may have trouble finding people to do the job.. And a councillor has said Garda or private security protection may have to be included in the contract. , Fianna Fáil Councillor Eamon Quinlan raised the issue of loose horses in the Carrickpherish/Gracedieu area at a meeting of the Metropolitan Council, held in the Tower Hotel, because of Covid restrictions. Cllr Quinlan said the problem was getting worse. “We have loose horses on the side of the road that are taking use of footpaths from locals. They are getting into local housing estates and damaging communal green areas, denying them to local families. They are making their way further and further down Gracedieu as of late.”

The council’s Director of Services, Fergus Galvin, said there had been an attempt to deploy a contractor to remove horses but it was called off due to an “intolerable level” of intimidation towards the contractor when trying to do their job.. He said the council would re-issue a tender to try to attract a new contractor but the role needed a specialist and not many people wanted to take it on because of the level of intimidation. Cllr Quinlan said Garda or private security protection might have to be rolled into the contract to protect contractors. “If not, they run the risk of assault or other forms of intimidation,” he warned. “ After all, people can always be followed home and scores settled at a later date.” Cllr Quinlan said the new tender would be advertised soon and it was hoped that all the horses could be removed by early next year.

AN award-winning blogger and nutritionist has launched a new campaign to encourage healthy eating and help boost people’s immune system during the lockdown. “People have obviously been under a lot more pressure since the pandemic hit and this has impacted on many areas of their lives, including their financial, mental and physical well-being,” says Laura Warren . Her new website ( www.
elitelivingnutrition.com ) features a 58-page book with 24 recipes which is free for anyone to download. Laura, who is from Ferrybank and now lives in Inistioge, says: “People have obviously been under a lot more pressure since the pandemic hit and this has impacted on many areas of their lives, including their financial, mental and physical well-being.” Laura, who was recently
named Health & Nutrition Influencer of the Year (Ireland), rejects yo-yo dieting and short-term weight-loss programmes as “dangerous fads”. “Healthy eating and living is not about defining your shape or size,” she says. “It’s about nourishing your body with the right food, nutrients and vitamins to have a meaningful and happy life. You need to nourish to flourish.”
Creepy little pest is plaguing our homes
WATERFORD is suffering from infestations of a creepy little pest called a silverfish. Rentokil, the pest control provider, has reported an increase in numbers of the insect everywhere but Waterford is one of five counties worst hit. The others are Dublin, Cork, Galway and Kildare. Silverfish are about a centimetre long, silver or grey in colour, with tiny scales and two antennae. The insects can lay up to 60 eggs every day, so a small problem can quickly become large. An infestation of silverfish can result in damage to books, photographs, paintings and plaster as they feed on starch and cellulose. They also feed on human debris such as dead skin and hair Silverfish eggs are hidden in tiny cracks or crevices, making them difficult to locate. Rentokil advises householders to deny them food by vacuuming and keeping dust and debris to a minimum. and to store your own food in containers with tightly sealed lids.
Students pay rent but can’t study on campus
THE majority of Third Level students here expect to spend no time on campus this year but many have paid in advance for accommodation and have been unable to get a refund. A survey has found that 64% of students in the South East - at Waterford Institute of Technology and IT Carlow - do not believe they will personally attend either college. It found that seven per cent of students in the South East believed they would spend less than five hours a week on campus and a further seven per cent thought they would spend between six and 10 hours there. Some students thought their courses would require them to attend, but only 21% of those surveyed in the South East expected to be spending more than 10 hours a week on campus. The survey was conducted for Sinn Féin among more than 300 students at eight locations. It found that in the South East, most students (89%) rented private accommodation and 11% of them had paid up to €500 in advance. Considerably more than half (67%) of students at the Waterford and Carlow ITs had paid between €500 and €1,000 upfront and 22% had paid between €1,000 and €2,000. In
Dublin, more than half the students surveyed had paid between €2,000 and €5,000 in advance but nobody in the South East had paid more than €2,000 upfront. Sinn Féin spokesperson on Further and Higher Education, Rose Conway-Walsh, accused private landlords of “gouging” students. She said: “Students have been gouged for large sums of money upfront by private landlords who did not give refunds during the first lockdown and seem unlikely to willingly do so now.” The Mayo TD called on the Government to ensure all leases can be ended early without incurring any fee or penalty and that all deposits and advanced rent paid to private accommodation providers is refunded to students. Ms Conway-Walsh said lack of connectivity in parts of the country had forced students to find accommodation even though their courses have moved online. She called on colleges to explore the possibility of using on-campus accommodation for students with no internet connectivity at home. The Sinn Féin Student Accommodation Survey was carried out in October before the shift to Covid-19 Level 5.
Down and dirty in the local makeup bag WOMEN in Waterford splash almost €30 a month on make-up , a survey has found. Their average spend is €27.91, according to the fashion retailer PrettyLittleThing. which studied spending habits in the five main cities. The ladies of Limerick are the nation’s make-up moguls, spoashing an average of €35.41 a month, followed by Dublin on €33.75. Waterford comes third, followed by Galway (€25.77). Either the cailíní of Cork use less make-up or its chapeer down there. They are bottom of the list with an average monthly spend of €24.31. PrettyLittleThing also also
dug into the dirty secrets of makeup bags. It found that 12% of women never ever clean their makeup bags. Some of the items in the bags are even more neglected: 17% of women never clean tweezers or pencil sharpeners, more than 10% never clean eyelaash curlers and almost 6% don’t clean makeup brushes. There is a seriou message behind the survey. “Going long periods of time without cleaning your makeup, in particular un-sanitised makeup brushes, can result in the transfer of germs, which can irritate your skin,” wartned Amy Simon, head of PR at PrettyLittleThing

Four new hubs Give a dog a good name ... to help beat the commute WORK is underway on creating remote working hubs in four Waterford vilages. The ‘smart working’ centres will be in Tallow, Lismore, Cappoquin and Villierstown and will be part of the Blackwater Valley Economic Development Zone. It is a joint venture by Waterford Leader Partnership and Waterford City and County Council. The hubs will help meet the demand for remote working space that has arisen since Covid-19 restrictions forced many people to work from home. They will help remote workers avoid a commute to Waterford city or further afield. Waterford Leader Partnership chief executive Jimmy Taaffe said the project could attract as many as 80 new residents to the
Blackwater Valley. “This capital infrastructure project will develop much needed Smart Working locations in the four West Waterford villages,” he said. “In total 80 office spaces will be developed. “With a total capital spend of approximately €3m it is envisaged that the project will create 40 construction jobs during the duration of the development and the completed project will create 90-plus full-time jobs in the area with an estimated economic salary value of €4m per annum.” A recent study found that 6,000 jobs in Waterford city and county could be done from home or a hub,. The Regional Co-Working Analysis found that a further 6,000 jobs could be
switched to remote working in Co Kilkenny and 2,800 in Carlow. The study, which was prepared by the three Regional Assemblies of Ireland, found that 387,000 private sector workers are capable of operating remotely in Ireland. Analysis from the Southern Regional Assembly area found that more than 90,000 private sector jobs were capable of being worked remotely in the area it covers, The region takes in Waterford, Kikenny, Carlow, Wexford, Tipperary, Cork, Limerick, Kerry, and Clare. The study identified 90 hubs in the region: 12 in Waterford city and county, three in Kilkenny, five in Carlow , 23 in the Cork city and county, 14 in Limerick, six in Wexford, 13 in Kerry, four in Tipperary and 10 in Clare.

WIT tops the league and aims for space WATERFORD Institute of Technology (WIT) has been named Institute of Technology of the Year for the third time. In topped the league in the Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021 . WIT won’t be able to repeat the achievment much longer. If all goes to plan it will merge with IT Carlow and become a Technological University of the South East in 2022. Alastair McCall, editor of The Sunday Times Good University Guide, said: “WIT has celebrated its 50th birthday this year by driving forward with plans that will eventually see its name disappear, emerging as a technological university that will have a big impact on the South East region and far beyond. “That can only be good news for the regional economy and for the students who are lucky enough to study there.” IT President Prof Willie Donnelly said the institute waas honoured to have been awarded
this prestigious accolade as it marked its 50th anniversary. COSMIC: WIT has agreed to boldly go where no Third Level college has gone before. It has joined with Cork Institute of Technology to form the Society, Economy and Environment (SEE) Space network. It will have the potential to build links to international space organisations such as the European Space Agency. Working together, the new research team, headed by Dr Mark White in Waterford and Dr Niall Smith in Cork, says it will use space to solve problems that are relevant to the region and the country. It aims to attract investment from national and international sources. Professor Donnelly, said: “Bringing together two of Ireland’s top performing research institutions to conduct multidisciplinary research and innovation in space will create exciting new funding opportunities.”
votes at each location in round two will go forward to the grand final. The winner will be announced on November 20. “We have been overwhelmed with the response to this year’s Puppy of the Year competition,” said Craig Power from Petmania Waterford. It’s the old car for the hard road
THERE are more old cars on the roads of Waterford than in most of our neighbouring counties. The county has 649 cars with ten owners or more. The figure for Kilkenny is 464, for Carlow it is 370. Tipperary, at 654, has a similar figure to Waterford. Across the 26 counties there are 17,166 vehicles that have had 10 or more owners - 3,598 of these are in Dublin and 1,883 in Cork. The figures are from Cartell. ie. a company that specialises in tracking vehicle histories. It found thart the majority of vehicles in Ireland are on their first, second or third owner. The average age of a vehicle in the Irish fleet (all vehicle types) is 8.60 years and the average number of owners is 2.54 owners per vehicle. The vehicle that has changed hands most is a Honda Civic registered in County Carlow. It has had 43 owners.

-RTE NEWS REPORT e’ll need to make a start soon,” said Nick. “We can’t just sit around things will
here hoping improve.” His wife could see no reason to hurry. Lots of time yet , she said, but he just brushed her opinion aside with that extraordinary laugh he had. “No! No! No! We need to make a move. We should be logging the orders at least and starting on the delivery schedule. Sure you never know what problems will crop up in these uncertain times.” His wife gave a crooked little smile. If she had a euro for every time her husband mentioned ‘these uncertain times’ she would be a rich woman
Michael Wolsey and could give up this seasonal work. “Is the production team ready for an early start?” she wondered. “Aren’t they just back from their holidays?” “No holidays this year,” explained Nick. “Sure the only place left on the Green List is Saudi Arabia and we’re not allowed to land there. The production guys are all bored stiff and rarin’ to go. We’ve all got to do our bit in these uncertain times.” His wife gave that smile again and added another euro to her virtual bank balance. She hardly liked to raise a problem about the delivery team, but she had noticed Ruddy sniffling around the dispatch department
that morning and she thought he didn’t look well. Nicholas gave that stupid laugh again. “No! No! No! He’ll be right as rein. We’re all in this together, you know.” She did know. He had told her often enough. She added two
euro to her bank balance for that one. All the same, she wondered if Ruddy should maybe get tested, but Nick was having none of it. “No! No! No! He always looks like that - it’s that ridiculous nose of his. If he gets tested
they could all end up in isolation and then where would we be? We’ve all got to stick together in these uncertain times.” Nick went off to talk to the production team and his wife added another euro to her account. She hadn’t time for this early planning malarky. She had important things to do. She had banana bread to make and she was learning Welsh from an online platform. And if that wasn’t enough, she was in training for a marathon in her living room to raise money for Tibetan llamas. She was worried about Ruddy, though. Nicholas looked worried too when he returned from the production floor. “Trouble? she asked. “Trouble!” he said. “It’s that bloody Legolas. Sneaked off to Rivendell to visit his uncle Elrond and, if that wasn’t bad enough, they went
to a football match together.” His wife couldn’t see a problem there. Hadn’t the GAA said football was perfectly safe? “The GAA!” exploded Nick. “I wouldn’t trust the Gnome Athletic Association to run a piss-up in a brewery!” “Oh, I don’t know about that,” said his wife, and Nick had to concede she might have a point. But whatever about breweries, they had made a hopeless job of running the Covid restrictions at Rivendell Robert Emmet’s . Half the team had tested positive and now most of the supporters had been ordered into isolation, Legolas included. “If he’s a superspreader we’ll have to shut up shop,” said Nicholas. “Oh! Woe! Woe! We’ll never get the job finished on time. And then what will we do? You know I have to deliver - there’s no Covid claus in my contract.” “Uncertain times,” said his wife, beating Nicholas to it. “But you can’t say you weren’t warned. I remember them telling you way back in March ... if the virus gets in here, your elf system just won’t be able to cope.”
What options do I have setting up a retirement plan?
YOUR options depend on if you are an employee or selfemployed. If you are an employee, the first thing to do is find out if you have a pension scheme through your job. If not, you will need to consider making provision for your retirement and you should think about other options such as a personal pension or a Personal Retirement Savings Account (PRSA). If you have already got a good pension arrangement through work, you may not need to make any additional provisions or you may be able to top-up your benefits by making Additional Voluntary Contributions (AVCs). There are two types of pension schemes. If you have a Defined |Benefit Pension Scheme – a pension related to your salary, for example a pension of two thirds of final salary at retirement –

Feed the Birds
BOOK of the week
with Justin Ivory
Blue Tit on a peanut feeder (Photo Justin Ivory) WITH Autumn rapidly drawing to a close, and the colder, shorter days of winter looming ever nearer, now is a good time to start feeding birds in your garden if you have not already being doing so. Although the weather has been unseasonably mild and warm to date, and there are still quite a few insects on the wing and wild fruits, nuts and berries to be found, these food sources will soon be running out. Also, the shorter days give less daylight hours for birds to look for food and in lower temperatures it takes more energy to search and find less readily available food sources. In wintertime every little bit of extra energy expenditure can ultimately spell doom for an individual bird. So that’s where we come in. Putting out food for birds gives them an easy and reliable source of food. It can literally mean the difference between life and death for them. While birds obviously benefit from supplementary feeding in winter, food shortages can occur at any time of year. Feeding all year round gives birds a better chance of surviving food shortages whenever they may occur. So, what foods should you feed birds? Below is a list of the best options: Nyjer Seed – tiny black seeds which need a special feeder, they have a high oil content and are rich in fat. Sunflower Hearts – the most popular food in my garden, I literally can’t keep the feeders topped up with the stuff. Peanuts – the traditional favourite but make sure to get from a reliable source as they can contain a natural toxin, aflatoxin, which can kill birds. As well as they above, seed mixes, fatballs, mealworms and specialist mixes for Robins are all great choices. Remember to clean your feeders about every 2 weeks with warm soapy water to avoid the spread of disease.

ON THE ROCKS Streaming from October 23
Colm Tóibín was first introduced to the photographs of Tony O’Shea when he was an editor at a magazine called In Dublin back in the late 1970s. O’Shea is 73 now and this is basically a retrospective book of his life’s work to date. The Light of Day, is full of vignettes, moments, little stories in themselves, the rituals and recreation of his city that he went out to explore and capture like the Cartier-Bresson of Dublin. The Light of Day is published next month by RRB Photobooks and the Gallery of Photography Ireland. An exhibition is planned at the Gallery of Photography, Dublin, in 2021.
If you’ve missed the first few instalments of this latest reality caper, don’t worry, you’ve still time to dip your oars in. From British politicians to Olympians, this motley crew of semi-celebs like Fleur East (?) and Joe Weller (?) have to row the Irish Sea the full length of Britain, without getting pelted by rocks from the Irish along the east coast. Well, forget that last bit. Wishful thinking. This episode sees them reach Northern Ireland and the Scottish islands and ‘tensions emerge on board as the famous faces deal with rough waters’. Poor souls. Any room down there, Davy Jones?
Who can forget the great Bill Murray in Lost in Translation? While this reunion doesn’t quite reach the heights of Murray and Coppola’s previous collaboration, Lost in Translation, any film that features Murray’s wry, deadpan talents is a winner in most homes. This romcom of sorts, follows a father and daughter (Bill Murray and Rashida Jones) as they tail her suspicious husband (Marlon Wayans) to see if he is having an affair with a co-worker. Life, love, parenthood, ageing drinking, anyone? One for the couch, in the PJs, with the partner.

BEEF AND GUINNESS STEW goodfoodireland.ie
A CHRISTMAS GIFT FROM BOB Out November 6
It’s November, the cruellest month of the year, so time for something suitably angry. A liquid ode to our past, 19 Crimes is said to be inspired by those who, beginning in 1788, were transported to Australia for a life of hard labour. Many did not survive the journey: for those that did a new world awaited. The rest is a chequered history and this wine honours the history they wrote and the culture they built. Criminally good and with a heady whack of 13.5% ABV, you can settle into winter in good company. Available now for special price of €9.84.
This winter warmer from Guinness Storehouse Executive Head Chef Justin O’Connor is a true winner and, as with al stews, gets better once its left to, well, stew for a day or two. With a prep time of just 70 minutes, this is a relatively easy dish to prepare and you can always cheat by buying the mash instead of making it yourself. Just don’t cheat on the Guinness, otherwise you’re left with just Beef Stew. Not the same thing. Full recipe here: www.goodfoodireland.ie/recipe/signaturebeef-guinness-stew-guinness-storehouseexecutive-head-chef-justin-oconnor
This is the much-anticipated sequel to A Gift from Bob, lazily cut and pasted to cash in on the Christmas market. In the first outing, we met the busker who met the cat that saved him from a life on the streets. Here, we meet them both again only it’s Christmas. Actually, there’s a bit more to it, in that it looks like the inseparable pair are about to be separated forever. Who will save the day? Look, if you like feelgood tales with animals then this is a harmless treat for the family and a novel take on the recycled Christmas theme. You can also buy the book . . .

54th Anniversary JAMES O’NEILL
Too young to die, too precious to lose, Precious people are very few, That’s why Gavin, there was only one of you. That awful day you left us Is always on our mind, And though we try to reason why, No answers we can find. God must have known how much we’d hurt The day he made us part, When he took away our lovely son, He surely broke our hearts. He must have had his reasons, A mystery, still to us, He must have had a special place That no-one else can fill. We miss your sunny nature, Your smiling, happy face, And no-one else in the world Could ever take your place. You’ll never be forgotten Gavin, I’m sure you know that’s true, You can’t forget someone you love As much as we love you. One special person, one special face, And in our hearts, a special place, Gavin no words, no verse can really say, What we feel on this your anniversary. We want to tell you something Gavin So there won’t be any doubt, You’re so wonderful to think of But so hard to do without. - We will never forget you Gavin, we love and miss you now and always, from your broken hearted Mam and Dad xxx Along the road of yesterday That takes us back to you, And memories of us together And happy times we knew, We shared so much together, Laughter, joy and tears, For us who thought so much of you, They were our happiest years, Nothing can replace you Gavin, Nothing ever will, In life we loved you dearly, In death we love you still, The precious years won’t come again When we were all together, But the love and joy you gave us Will stay with us forever. - remembering and missing you always, from your brother Ricky and Paula. God took the strength of a mountain, The majesty of a tree, The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea, The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night, The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagles flight, The joy of a morning in spring,
In loving memory of my dear father James O’Neill, 17 Leamy St., whose 54th anniversary occurs on the 28th October. Always in my thoughts, Forever n my heart. - From your loving son FrankFrankie

Long is the road to yesterday, That leads us back to you, And memories of us together And happy times we knew, We shared so much together Laughter joy and tears, For us who thought so much of you, They were our happiest years, Nothing can replace you Mam Nothing ever will, In life we loved you dearly In death we loved you still - Love and miss you, your daughter Bridie. So many people loved you, That makes us very proud, You were a special mother, That stood out in a crown, As time goes by without you, The days turn into years, They hold a thousand memories, And a million silent tears, For those who loved and lost you, And whose parting brought such pain, We will treasure your memory forever, In a world that is never the same. - Sadly missed by your daughter Mary, John and Jasmine I sat with you today you know, I sat right in your chair, I know I could not see you, But I knew that you were there, I couldn’t hear your voice at all, But I heard every word that was spoken, I sat with you today you know, Calm, but yet so heartbroken, I know you follow me around, I have known it from the start, But sometimes I am afraid to look, So heavy is my heart, I often feel you touch my face, Or think I feel you near, But when I try and see you, It’s like you just simply disappear, I love you more and more each day, And I beg for you to know, I find it harder every day, Just to let you go, I sat with you today you know, I’m sure that was your scent,
Grandma, Your life was full of loving deeds, Forever thoughtful of our special needs, Today and tomorrow, our whole life through, We will always love and cherish you. -Sadly missed, from grand daughter Laura, and great grandchildren Seán, Eoin, Hannah and Charlie. God saw you getting tired, When a cure was not to be, He closed his arms around you And whispered “come to me”. With tearful eyes we watched you, And saw you pass away, And although we love you dearly, We could not make you stay, A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands at rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best. - Sadly missed, your grand daughter Donna and great grand daughter Kasey. There was magic in our Nanny’s touch, And sunshine in her smile, There was love in everything she did, To make our lives worthwhile. - Sadly missed, your grandchildren Darren and Tara, great grandchildren Darragh, Mollie, Kyra and Jayden.
