Green light for St Patrick’s Day AFTER two long years without the fun and festivities that go with St Patrick’s Day, it has been confirmed that the St Patrick’s Day parade will return to Waterford City this year. Waterford Council has also announced the launch of a St Patrick’s Day Festival this year, which for the first time will have the full backing of Failte Ireland. The festival this time around will take place over three days, from March 17th to 19th, with the theme of ‘Waterford, where St Patrick’s Day began’, to mark the fact that Waterford was the first city to hold a parade over a century ago. Organisers say it will “pay homage to Waterford’s people and communities, its culture and heritage, its diversity, and its musical and artistic talent.” Welcoming the return of the parade in 2022, Cllr Joe Kelly, Waterford’s mayor, said: “It really is great to have such an exciting event to look forward to.
Gailltir players, Alannah O’Sullivan, Aoife Hartley and Annie Fitzgerald celebrate their win over Knockavilla in the Munster Intermediate Camogie Final 2021
“Unfortunately, our St Patrick’s Day festivities couldn’t go ahead for the last two years, but we are delighted to be able to reintroduce them, bigger and better this year, with a wonderful three-day celebration of our city and its heritage. “I’ve no doubt that our vibrant and creative community groups, cultural organisations, musicians and entertainers will contribute to an exciting programme that can be enjoyed by everyone over three fantastic days,” he added. There will also be an online element to St Patrick’s Day this year, as the parade will be live streamed, so those who cannot attend or remain cautious about attending large events can still share in the celebrations from their own homes. Details of the St Patrick’s Day Parade and festival event will be revealed in the coming weeks, so keep an eye on www. stpatricksfestivalwaterford. com for the full programme.

Time to spare for Aware?
IF your New ear’s resolution is to make a difference to other people’s lives in 2022, maybe you could consider giving some of your time to volunteering with Aware? The national charity — who support people impacted by depression and bipolar disorder — is seeking 50 volunteers for 2022, increasing its volunteer base from 450 to 500, in a bid to bolster supports on offer. The charity saw a significant spike in the number of people reaching out for support over the pandemic, in addition to the huge prevalence of depression in Ireland. Aware has now put out an urgent call for people who have empathy, compassion and just three hours a week to assist with three key services: the Support Line, which operates 365 days a year; virtual or in-person Support and Self-care Groups; and the Life Skills online education programme. The organisation is seeking volunteers to work on services remotely, as well as in locations around the country. For more on volunteering: aware.ie/getinvolved/volunteering/
Rescue 117 rescued as Cabinet bows to pressure
THE future of the Waterford Search and Rescue base has been secured, after the Government bowed to pressure to retain the vital service for the region. There were fears Rescue 117 would be lost under a new contract, however, following discussions at Cabinet the contract will specify the need for the four bases in Waterford, Sligo, Dublin and Shannon to be retained. The tender for the €800m contract had stated there should be a “minimum” of three helicopters included in the new deal. This had prompted fears that Waterford could lose its helicopter base, which would have had ramifications for the South and South-East region. The R117 helicopter crews had a busy year in 2021, having typically responded to around 700 calls a year — this increased to over 900 last year. Local representatives in the South-East region had pressed the Government to clarify the future of the Waterford base, and ensure it would not be lost under the new contract. Ahead of the crunch talks, Transport Minister Eamon Ryan said it was a “critical” issue and the Government would ensure the tender was handled in a “proper, organised way so that we get the best value and so that we get the best service”.
A statement from the Department of Transport said: “The amendment will ensure the delivery of wider Government policies concerning balanced and even distribution of State services and investment, particularly the needs of island and rural communities. Waterford Senator John Cummins said he had always been hopeful the Cabinet would approve the inclusion of four bases in the tender process. “I stated that I didn’t share the downbeat assessment that such a vital service would be lost to the region,” he said. “I have engaged extensively over many months with Tánaiste Leo Varadkar on this issue and I want to acknowledge the work of the three Government party leaders and Minister [Hildegarde[ Naughton for their commitment to clarifying this matter.” Meanwhile, Fine Gael TD Paul Kehoe said: “This is such an important service for the South-East and have been of great comfort to many families.” And Sinn Féin TD David Cullinane said: “There were fears that one base could be scrapped but thankfully that has been avoided following strong representations from TDs and senators across the South-East. “It is great news that all four bases will be retained.”
Waterford registers 1,157 .ie domains
A total of 1,157 new .ie domains were registered in Waterford in 2021 — a growth of 10.9% on prepandemic figures. Two of the most frequently used .ie domain keywords were home and furniture, as business moved to online stores in direct response to locked-down economy. The 2021 .IE Domain Profile Report, which explores and analyses the .ie database, shows that 36,875 new .ie
domains were registered in Leinster and 57,530 on the island of Ireland, making 2021 the second-best year for new .ie domain registrations. Businesses in Waterford are investing in new websites, integrating e-commerce technology, and making use of productivity-enhancing tools all year round, the report found. At the end of December 2021, the .ie domain accounted for 52.6% of all top-level domains.

Council to build homes for elderly
Waterford City and County Council will go ahead with the development of the old Summerland site across from the grotto at the Mercy Convent. The land sits in between a number of houses on the Yellow Road and the Nuns Convent Building and has been in the ownership of the Council for some years now but has laid dormant due to a number of factors. The site has now been earmarked for 12 apartments that will house elderly couples and individuals, including an apartment adapted for wheelchair users. The development will be three storeys high but will be in line with the height of the adjacent houses on the yellow road, to ensure there is no clash with planning standards for the area. Welcoming the development, Fianna Fail Councillor Eamon Quinlan said: “This development will be a Godsend for older people who are in unstable living conditions, who are worried about their tenancies or are on fixed low incomes.”

48,500 Treatment of women by on lists local consultant ‘unacceptable’ athospital TWO more women have received apologies from University Hospital Waterford over treatment by the same consultant at its emergency department, it has emerged. It brings to four the number who received the apologies following their interactions with Dr Brendan McCann. As reported in the Irish Examiner recently, apologies were provided to a teenage girl and a 29-year-old woman, Two other women aged in their 50s had also contacted the newspaper about their experiences. UHW’s General Manager wrote to both saying “it is completely unacceptable that any staff member would communicate with anyone in that way”. All four women were told that the treatment by consultant Brendan McCann was “completely unacceptable” in the letter. One woman, from West Waterford, was not a patient but had brought an elderly relative to the hospital in July 2020. She told the HSE that she
Dr. Carmel Mullaney and Dr. Sarah Doyle with members of the Department of Public Health, HSE South East who were virtually presented with a HSE Excellence Award by Chief Clinical Officer Dr. Colm Henry
had been allowed to stay with her family member by nurses present, but was asked to leave the department repeatedly by Dr McCann. She said she was left “shaken and crying”. The hospital apologised to her the following month. Another
woman in her 50s visited UHW last year as a patient and alleged she had been mistreated by the consultant. She received an apology from the hospital last November. A teenage girl received an apology in recent days, after she had presented to A&E in pain
but was refused entry and not assessed. In the other case, a 29-yearold woman was in severe pain with long-term ovary issues and alleged she had been “verbally abused” by Dr McCann in front of other patients and staff. She received her apology in 2020.
University Hospital Waterford (UHW) now has 48,500 people on waiting lists, and there are “growing concerns” that cancers are being missed. The Irish Hospital Consultants Association (IHCA) has found almost 5,000 people waiting for in-patient care and 43,500 waiting to see consultants as outpatients. The spiralling lists also include the largest number waiting anywhere in the country for ear, nose, and throat care, with 10,734 on this single list, including children waiting for tonsilitis care. Meanwhile, 6,331 people are waiting for orthopaedic help, including hip replacements, and 6,000 are waiting on dermatology, including eczema and other painful conditions. The overall number is now almost the same as the population of Waterford City and suburbs, the IHCA said. Only one extra intensive care bed has been opened at the hospital in five years, the association added.
Dog owners told Waterford to watch for lambs student progresses at UCC
Minister Charlie McConalogue, with Minister Heather Humphreys, farmer Donie Anderson and Minister of State Martin Heydon. DOG owners have been warned to keep a close eye on their pets as lambing season begins across the county. Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys has reminded dog owners of their responsibilities and the vulnerability of sheep to attacks. The issue is one of grave concern to the farming community and attacks on sheep are happening far too often in the countryside. The latest figures show there were 240 incidents of ‘Livestock Worrying’ in 2020 – with a similar number expected when the 2021 returns are
completed. It comes as Ministers Humphreys visited a sheep farm with Minister for Agriculture, Charlie McConalogue, in South West Dublin recently, where she announced the start of an awareness campaign that will run over lambing season. Ms Humphreys said: “Attacks on sheep can have a devastating impact on farmers, their businesses and their families. “So I’m appealing to dog owners, particularly in rural areas, to please keep your dogs under control and be vigilant at all times.” The minister has also advised pet owners that dogs must be microchipped under the law.
WATERFORD student Lauren Turner was among 11 University College Cork students recently presented with scholarships at a virtual awards ceremony, as part of the Johnson & Johnson Ireland Women in STEM2D (WiSTEM2D) Award Programme. Now in its fourth year at UCC, the WiSTEM2D programme will provide the scholarship recipients with extensive industry mentoring and leadership training. WiSTEM2D refers to Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Manufacturing and Design. The WiSTEM2D programme underlines Johnson & Johnson’s commitment to developing and implementing high-impact strategies to support female students undertaking STEM2D degree courses at UCC and in universities around the world. While there are 117,800 people across Ireland who are working in jobs that require STEM skills, just 25% of these roles are performed by women.

A pint, a coffee, a cinema seat ... a few of my favourite things
A
s the old Kitty Kellen song told us, little things mean a lot. And so, having done a bit of shopping, I bought a newspaper and wandered into a pub. I ordered a pint at the bar and exchanged some aimless chatter with the barman while he poured it. Then I took my paper and my pint to the end of the counter where, seated on a comfortable bar stool, I read one and sipped the other. Bliss. It’s not something I would do often. Bars are for socialising, I think. For meeting friends, swapping stories, putting the world to rights. They are places for fun, a nice drink and, increasingly nowadays, for good food. But I could enjoy all these things under Covid restrictions.

Michael Wolsey More or less. Booking a table and sitting at it wasn’t a great hardship and I didn’t mind showing a vaccination certificate or wearing a mask on entry. Early closing was a pain in the ass some evenings but suited me fine on others. These things all took a little preparation, a price worth paying for an hour or two in pleasant company, but more trouble than the pleasure of a quiet drink was worth, even if I knew

exactly when and where I wanted to enjoy the solitary pint. It’s just a little luxury but it’s nice to have it back. And next day, when I met a friend in the street, we walked into a café for a cup of coffee. Just like that. We didn’t have to plan it, like a military manoeuvre. She didn’t mind that she had forgotten her mask and I didn’t care that I couldn’t locate the Covid cert on my phone. No fuss, just a coffee. More bliss. Now I have booked tickets for the theatre and, by the time you read this, I will have been at a cinema to watch Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast. Our family has a holiday in the sun on hold for the past two years. Now I’m feeling confident enough to start checking on flights for July. We can’t do much about the big things. I hope with all my heart that
a new Covid variant won’t spring up to wreck our lives or, worse still, a conflict in eastern Europe. But If these things happen, I won’t be able to stop them. However, I can do things to help preserve the small pleasures I am now rediscovering. I can support the local shops, bars and cafés, the cinemas and theatres that I have too often taken for granted. Even on bad days, I can try to be pleasant to all those people who provided me with vital services over the pandemic months. And I can abide by the few Covid rules that remain. I can take a test if I feel ill and isolate if the result is positive. I can wear a mask in shops and on the bus or train, stand at a social distance in public places, keep my vaccines up to date. Little things. But as Kitty said ...

Screaming Banshees
podcast of the week book of the week
with Justin Ivory
Red Fox mating season (Photo Justin Ivory) It is a dark, still, winter’s night as I pull up outside my house. As I make my way towards the front door a blood-curdling scream rents the night air. Is it a banshee bringing omens of death, or has some unfortunate soul just been brutally attacked? This is a sound that can freeze the blood of those who have never heard it before. Luckily, I am well familiar with it and it is one of my favourite sounds in the natural world. It is the cries of a Red Fox. Relatively taciturn for most of the year, between December and February they turn the dial up to 11. This is fox mating season. Red foxes make a variety of sounds during this period barks, howls, squeals and screams. A distinctive triple bark is used to locate each other in the dark. The banshee like wails and blood-curdling screams are typically made by the vixens, but will also be made by the dog foxes. Vixens are in heat for approximately 3 weeks during the mating season, but only fertile about 3 days of those 3 weeks. Before mating there is a period of ‘wooing’ which involves scent marking and the shrieking/screaming vocalisations. The dog and vixen will mate various times over this period. It can be quite bizarre to see them mating as they look like they are stuck together bumto-bum! This is called a tie, or copulatory lock. It is perfectly normal, so don’t be tempted to disturb them or intervene, they don’t need help! So after this period of weird noises and strange sexual positions, the vixen with any luck will become pregnant. Gestation is typically around 52/53 days and cubs are typically born in March and April. The cubs are blind and deaf at birth. They have chocolate brown fur and startling blue eyes. They emerge from the ‘earth’ after about 3 or 4 weeks.

IF the dancin’ isn’t enough for you, then you can always peel off the dancin’ shes and join the likes of Lottie Ryan, Lyra and Brian Dowling. Fans of Dancing with the Stars Ireland have even more reasons to follow the journey of their favourite celebrities and their professional partners to see who will lift the glitter ball trophy. New podcast episodes come out every Monday and Thursday after h the show on RTÉ One every Sunday at 6.30pm. Pictured is Grainne Seoige with partner John Nolan dancing to the tune With You I’m Born Again. Indeed. .
FOR hundreds of years, the islands and their constituent tribes that make up the British Isles have lived next door to each other in a manner that, over time, suggested some movement towards political union. It was an uneven, stop-start business and it worked better in some places than in others. Still, England, Wales and Scotland have hung together through thick and thin . And, for a long time, it seemed that something similar might have been said about the smaller island to the west . . . In a witty narrative, historian Fergal Tobin looks into our past.
Filmed over 12 months by Galway’s Tua Films and presented by RTE’s courts correspondent, Orla O’Donnell, Finné is a warts and all re-telling of riveting first-person testimonies. Finné delves deep and narrow in to one person’s story rather than giving a general overview of these events that made the news over the past 40 years. Here, we recount intimate stories of triumphs and traumas, of Davids and Goliaths, of dogged resilience and human frailties. Previous seasons were awarded the Human Rights Justice Media Award and the Best series at the Celtic Media Festival. Pictured: Lisa Lawlor, who was orphaned as a baby following the Stardust fire.

COMEDY-THRILLER? Drama-comedy? Romcom-thriller? Who really knows. And after watching this parody, you may even ask yourself, was that a parody? But at eight episodes, there is a lot to get through to reach that point. And if this review sounds very rambling and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, then that is exactly how you will feel watching it. But to sum up: After splitting from her husband following their daughter’s tragic death, Anna (Kristen Bell) doesn’t have much going on. She spends her days drinking . . . ah yes, there’s an idea.

maverick sabre Don’t Forget to Look Up IT’S 10 years ago that this Wexford-born (well, he moved from London to new Ross when he was four years old, so . . . ) artist released his debut album and quickly became a rising star. Michael Stafford aka Maverick Sabre released two successful albums before pursuing the independent route. Once again, these are fantastic pop songs, displaying a sophisticated level of musical versatility that always come out tops thanks to the star’s immaculate voice.

TWO times ‘Dancing with the Stars’ winner, performer and choreographer Pasquale La Rocca is calling on members of the public to support The Alzheimer Society of Ireland’s (The ASI) annual nationwide Denim Day for Dementia fundraising campaign, on Friday, March 4th to raise funds for vital dementia supports and services. The new ambassador for The ASI is asking everyone from around Ireland to don their denims and donate just €2 to support the 64,000 people living with dementia and their carers. Mark the diaries!
HAVE you ever read a book that includes a toilet visitation, a bar room brawl, an act of seduction, naughty shenanigans on a beach, lewd thoughts, adultery, a drunken orgy, and a detailed description of urinating in a back garden? And all of this happening in just one day! If you haven’t, then you haven’t read James Joyce’s Ulysses. Strolling Through Ulysses, with Robert Gogan, tells the fun-filled story of Bloomsday — June 16th 1904 — the iconic day on which James Joyce’s Ulysses is based.

91st Birthday Remembrance JAMES KELLY
In Loving Memory Unseen and unheard but always near, So loved, so missed, so very dear 19th & 55th Anniversaries Jim & Mamie whelan
40th Anniversary ERNIE CARBERRY
11th Anniversary MARY O’KEEFFE
Birthday remembrance for James Kelly late of 95 Dominics Place, whose birthday occurs on the 4th February. Mass will be offered on 6th February at 11:30 a.m. in Carbally Church. Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning’s hush, I am the swift, uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine in the night. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there: I did not die. - Sadly missed by your daughter Angela I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one, I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done. I’d like to leave an echo, Whipering softly down the ways of happy times, And laughing times and bright and sunny days, I’d like the tears of those who grieve, To dry before the sun of happy memories, That I leave when life is done. - Sadly missed by daughter Marie, sons Michael, Bernard, John, daughters in law & grandsons. God saw the road was getting tough, The hill too hard to climb, He gently closed your loving eyes, And whispered peace be thine, A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands at rest, He broke our hearts to prove, He only takes the best, Your life was love and labour, Your love for your family true, You did your best for all of us, We will always remember you. So keep your hands around him Lord, And give him special care, Make up for all that he suffered, And all that seemed unfair. We have many things to thank you for, We just don’t know where to start, Just to tell you that we love you, From the bottom of our hearts. - Happy Birthday, love, your son Paul, daughter in law Sharon and grandaughter Shannon
In loving memory of our parents Jim and Mamie Whelan, late of 9 Barrack Street. Mamie, whose 19th anniversary occurs on 4th of February and Jim whose 55th anniversary occurs on the 10th of April. Mass pffered on Saturday 5th February at 7:00 pm in Ballybricken

7th Anniversary Richard Deady
I’m memory of Richard Deady of 7 Blake’s lane Waterford who’s 7th anniversary occurs on 2nd February 2019. They say there is a reason, They say that time will heal, But neither time nor reason Will change the way I feel, For no one knows the heartacche, That lies behind our smiles, No one knows how many times, We have broken down and cried, We want to tell you something, So there won’t be any doubt, You’re so wonderful to think of, But so hard to be without. - Lots of love Aileen,Connie, Susan and John and grandchildren and great grandchildren.
13th Anniversary RITA O’MAHONEY
In loving memory of Rita (Margaret) O’Mahoney née Cuffe, late of 9 Elm Terrace, Lisduggan, who passed away on 2nd February 2009. To a wonderful mother, I thought of you today, But that is nothing new, I thought of you yesterday, And the day before that too, I will think of you tomorrow, As I will my whole life through, For the day I fail to think of you, Is the day God takes me too. - Love from your daughter Rita
Time slips by and life goes on, But from our hearts you are never gone. - Loved and remembered by your loving family
11th Anniversary RAYMOND DOYLE
In loving memory of my brother late if 15th Ursuline Court, who died on 5th February 2011. R.I.P. Mass offered. As time unfolds another year, Memories keep you forever near, Silent thoughts of times together, Hold memories that will last forever. - Never forgotten, always remembered by your sister Breda, brother in law Sam, nieces and nephews.
6 Ballybricken, Waterford. Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Take it Dear Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart, where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. C.D.

In loving memory of Mary O’Keeffe, late of Mayor’s Walk, Waterford, whose eleventh anniversary occurs on 29th January 2022. This day will always be one that means so much to us. For though we sometimes long for all those yesterdays, and sorely miss your chats and your understanding ways. We know that our memories of you don’t fade; they grow. These gifts in memory help us to relive the good times that we shared, Reminding us of how much you loved us and how you truly cared. It’s in the air memories when we hear your voice calling to us in the morning birdsong, or in the moon at night where your love shines though so bright on us; in the fire memories of a warm summer haze, or in the water memories of a seaside spent day; and it’s in the earth memories of your favourite yellow roses, as we awake to your joy-filled ways. We take comfort in these loving memories for we know they hold us up to grow, endlessly rich and blessed. And as we stay strong and connected to you in these worldly prayers, we know too that you await to meet us again one day beyond the horizon, heavenly, where all the rainbows go. Thanks for the memories. - From your loving children Maria, Philip, Jim, Anne and Dominic, daughters & son-inlaw Ann Brett, Phil Regan and Nicholas Walsh, grandchildren Heather, Joss, John, Mark, Saoirse, Isabel and Oran, and your great friends Guenter Bens, Barbara McEvoy and especially Cathleen Morris.
