A summer like no other for the Déise Waterford is set for a summer like no other on several fronts after two years of Covid-19 restrictions. With the county’s hurlers triumphing in the National League last week, the Déise are now expected to make a charge for both the Munster and, dare we say it, All-Ireland titles. And with the summer months fast approaching, Visit Waterford are preparing for an even busier summer season as they get set to welcome an increased number of domestic and international tourists. There is huge optimism across Waterford’s tourism and hospitality industry according to David McCoy, Chairman of Visit Waterford. “There is certainly a lot more optimism and confidence across the industry as we prepare for a very important summer, welcoming more visitors both new and old to the region. “Waterford enjoyed a very busy summer in 2021 in line with domestic travel opening up and we especially look forward to welcoming even more international visitors back, there

are already signs of increased footfall, which of course is a hugely important step in the rebuilding of the industry to pre-pandemic levels.” This week, Visit Waterford launched its 2022 summer tourism campaign, ‘Waterford - Your adventure starts here’ which will showcase what Waterford city and county has
to offer as a tourism destination in Ireland’s Ancient East. Commenting on the launch of Visit Waterford’s summer campaign, Cllr. Seanie Power, Deputy Mayor of the City and County of Waterford said, “Waterford is a fantastic tourism destination and we are certainly spoilt for choice when we look at what’s on our doorstep.”
Tina Darrer, Co-owner of Dooley’s Hotel in Waterford City said hotels in the region are looking forward to welcoming Irish and international tourists this summer, “We are entering into the summer months with a lot more certainty this year, and holidaymakers are keen to lock in their summer plans.” Continued on next page

PUP ends April 4 marked the end of the Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP) and remaining recipients will now transition to jobseekers’ payments, if they are deemed eligible. The scheme was closed for new applications in January and last week, final payments to the remaining 44,747 claimants were processed. The PUP was first introduced as the Covid-19 pandemic struck in March 2020 and was originally intended to be a sixweek, short-term measure.
Following in the footsteps of leading Irish artists who took part during their early lives – renowned figures such as Graham Knuttel, Robert Ballagh, Dorothy Cross and Bernadette Madden – young artists who submitted entries to this year’s Texaco Children’s Art Competition, including a number from Co Waterford, are currently having their works evaluated
as the judging process gets underway. Pictured is adjudicator, Marie Connole, holding two of the entries received from Co. Waterford this year – a work entitled ‘The Best Disco’(left), by a pupil from St. Mary’s Grange National School and another entitled ‘Love Everyone’, by a pupil from St. Joseph’s Special School, Waterford. Winners in the seven age categories, including one
exclusively for artworks by young artists with special needs, will be announced in late May. Currently in its 68th year, the Texaco Children’s Art Competition is the longestrunning art sponsorship in Ireland. First held in 1955, it is hosted by Valero Energy (Ireland) limited – the company that markets fuel in Ireland under the Texaco brand.
Hurlers to push on this year

Meanwhile, Derek McGrath believes that Waterford are the the frontrunners to win the AllIreland title. The Déise brushed aside Cork to win their fourth Allianz Hurling League title at the weekend and expectations have now been raised that the 63-year wait for Liam MacCarthy could come to an end this summer. Limerick, champions in three of the last four years, have beaten Waterford in their last five championship meetings but McGrath told RTÉ that he thinks the Déise are now favourites. “Contenders? We are the team to beat now. Simple as,” he said. “I texted a few of the boys on Saturday. I’ve had little or no contact with them over the years because you try to give fellas space. “But every text that came back was ‘Step One complete’. That was their thought process. It’s very exciting.” And Waterford manager Liam Cahill says his side should not have any excuses heading into the championship after claiming the Allianz Hurling League Division 1 title.
Property prices up €16,000 in just 12 months
Property prices in Waterford have mirrored the national trend by rising during the quarter, according to the latest MyHome.ie Property Report. The report for Q1 2022, in association with Davy, shows that the median asking price for a property in the county is now €195,000. This means prices are up by €16,000 compared to this time last year. Asking prices for a 3-bed semi-detached house in the county also rose by €2,000 during the quarter to €197,000. This still means that prices in the segment have risen by €12,000 compared to this time last year. Meanwhile, the asking price for a 4-bed semi-detached house in Waterford stayed steady over the quarter at €229,000. This represents an increase of €10,000 compared to this time last year. There were 272 properties for sale in Waterford at the end of Q1 2022 – an increase of 5% over the quarter. The average time for a property to go sale agreed in the
county after being placed up for sale now stands at just over two months. The author of the report, Conall MacCoille, Chief Economist at Davy, said that double-digit inflation was now likely to persist until at least the middle of the year. “The broad picture of the market in early 2022 remains similar to last year: impaired supply coupled with robust demand due to Ireland’s strong labour market.” He said that the inflation forecast for the near-term would likely be beaten, given the labour market’s particularly strong performance had contributed to demand. “We had previously forecast Irish Residential Property Price Index (RPPI) inflation to slow to 3.5% in 2022, albeit signalling that we would likely revise that up to a mid-single-digit figure. “Our revised forecast is for 6.5% RPPI inflation through 2022 and 4.5% in 2023.” He added that homes are being sold at 6.5% above asking prices, reflecting the froth in the market.
Landlords must register every year
the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) announced that from April 4, all Waterford landlords must register each tenancy with the RTB every year. This must be completed within one month of the anniversary of when the tenancy began. Landlords of private rented accommodation, social housing provided by Approved Housing Bodies (AHBs) and landlords of Student Specific Accommodation (SSA) have
always been required to register their tenancies with the RTB within one month of a tenancy starting. Previously, tenancies were only required to be re-registered if a tenancy continued into a ‘Further Part 4’ tenancy. With the introduction of annual registration, the RTB’s online registration system will notify landlords in advance of the yearly anniversary of when the tenancy started, to ensure they register on time.

Bumper crowd for St Patrick’s
The return of the first St Patrick’s Day Parade to Waterford since 2019 saw record crowds in attendance on March 17. The spectacular Parade was the main event for the inaugural three-day Waterford St Patricks Festival which generated a real carnival atmosphere throughout the City Centre. With a total of over 70 contributors, including Spraoi, drama societies, community groups, sports clubs, youth groups and more, the organisers say they were delighted to see the number of diverse groups taking part. Johnny Codd, Festival Director from Waterford City & County Council, explained that “We only had a few months to prepare for St. Patricks Day, and we honestly didn’t know what to expect, given that it takes time to design and create a parade entry. We were blown away by the enthusiasm of the participants and by the standard of entries”. Mayor of Waterford City & County, Cllr. Joe Kelly highlighted the great atmosphere in the City, by saying that “I was honoured to be Mayor at the return of the St. Patricks Day parade.”

Power play: Seamus set for Masters bow
A year after being ranked outside the world’s top 450, Waterford’s Seamus Power last week solidified his place inside the top 50 golfers in the world to earn a maiden Masters appearance this weekend. This time last year Power was bouncing between second-tier Korn Ferry Tour events and the PGA Tour before enjoying his breakthrough win in the Barbasol Championship in July. Power finds himself at 35 years of age, after more than 10 years as a professional, playing in his first Masters and indeed, first major championship. The Waterford man admitted to being a little overawed when he spoke to RTÉ Sport’s Greg Allen in Augusta after a practice round. “It’s so far beyond even what I thought it would be,” he said of the fabled course. “Even as a spectator walking in here, there’s a different feeling. It’s so special. You feel you are in golfing Mecca. “I played a practice round yesterday. There were not many people around on the first tee,

and I was more nervous than I have been for a lot of shots under pressure in tournaments. I’m just so happy to be part of it. “(The challenge is ) going to be around the greens I think. I’m long enough, from what I have seen so far, to be able to play the course, but it’s the precision into
the greens, precision to put it in a place where you might be able to get up and down. “If you are out of position, get it back on the spot where at least you can maybe give yourself a chance for par or bogey, don’t turn one mistake into a big number. It’s going to get tough,
Rotary raises €15,500
Waterford Rotary has raises €15,500 for Waterford Hospice and Solas Cancer Support Centre through its 24th annual Memorial Christmas Tree. The Memorial Christmas Tree took place at in John Robert’s Square, in December, while Memorial Trees were also hosted by UPMC Whitfield, Supervalu Hypercentre and Ardkeen Quality Food Store. “For so many years the Rotary Club of Waterford Memorial Christmas Tree has been at the heart of Christmas in Waterford and we’re delighted that Solas Cancer Support Centre and Waterford Hospice are sharing the proceeds,” Keith Palmer, Waterford Rotary Club President said. Organiser Orm Kenny said “Thanks to Waterford City and County Council; Caulfield’s Supervalu, UPMC Whitfield; Waterford Shopping Centre, Lisduggan; Ardkeen Quality Food Store; Quish’s Supervalu, Tramore; Anne and Aidan Maguire of Old Farm Christmas Trees; Nolke Opticians; McDonalds; and Georges Court Shopping Centre.”
Heritage sites Jobs on to get €339,755 way as
Well-known Waterford heritage sites, including Curraghmore House, Mount Congreve House, Mount Melleray Abbey, T&H Doolan’s and the Spider Light, Passage East, have been awarded funding to conserve notable historic structures under the Historic Structures Fund 2022. The sites have been awarded funding for diverse reasons including essential roof and chimney repairs, stabilising works, and, in the case of T&H Doolan’s, repairs to the historic shopfront and lettering A total of €4m was awarded
nationwide through the Historic Structures Fund (HSF) administered by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage in partnership with the 31 Local Authorities. The announcement follows that of €4m in funding under the Department’s other built heritage grant scheme, the Built Heritage Investment Scheme, earlier this month. Through grants of between €15,000 and €200,000, the HSF assists owners of heritage structures – including those on the local authorities’ Record of Protected Structures.
Funding to improve homes Waterford City & County is set to receive increased funding to continue its work in supporting older people and people with a disability to live independently, Fine Gael Senator John Cummins has said. The Housing Adaptation Grant is 80% exchequer funded through the Department of Housing, Local Government and
Heritage, with 20% funding from the relevant local authority. The Waterford City & County allocation for the grant scheme is €2,250,625. “This is both good news for people who need and deserve the support to live in their own homes for as long as possible, and is also positive in terms of reducing dependency on our health service,” Mr Cummins said.
Eirgen expands
A series of job announcements are expected to be announced after EirGen Pharma unveiled a new €12m expansion of its operations in Waterford. The local company acquired a new building at the IDA Industrial Estate in Waterford to facilitate the expansion of its Oral Solid Dose manufacturing and packaging capabilities. The expansion - which will provide an additional 3,500m2 of state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities - will see millions invested locally throughout the construction phase in 2022/2023. The Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation, Leo Varadkar, called the decision “a testament to the local team and talent pool” of the South East. CEO Damien Burke stated: “The acquisition of this building and adjoining 1.2-hectare site strategically positions the business for sustained growth over the next ten years.

Sonia and the census got the gender question right
T
HE first personal question on your census form asked your name; the second said ‘what is your sex’. You had a simple choice, male or female. If you had been living in Scotland when its census was conducted last month you would have found that question more complicated. There you would have been able to select a third option of ‘transgender’. The Scottish form offered this guidance: “If you are transgender, the answer you give can be different from what is on your birth certificate. You do not need a gender recognition certificate.” So if you were born a man but feel you are a woman, that is how you would be recorded for Scottish statistical purposes. Some people wanted the Irish census question framed in the
Michael Wolsey same way and are urging the government to change it for the next one. Ministers should approach this issue with extreme caution. It is a bomb in a minefield, a weapon in a war over transsexual definition that has deeply divided society in Britain, although it has so far had little impact in Ireland. The Scottish census question
is in line with legislation passed by the parliament in Edinburgh which allows anyone to change the gender on their birth certificate simply by making “a legally-binding declaration that they intend to live permanently in their acquired gender”. This has led to contradictory rulings from the Scottish courts. They upheld the parliament’s right to pass such legislation but ruled that public boards have a duty to ignore it. The boards are governed by another piece of legislation which obliges them to ensure fair and equal treatment for women. That law says public bodies in Scotland must reserve places for women. It becomes pointless if men can claim the places simply by declaring themselves to be women. Scottish courts were also worried the legislation might damage the accuracy of data. You can’t, the appeal court ar-
gued, defend the rights of women if your data does not reliably distinguish between men and women. There are particular worries about the accuracy of criminal data, because a number of male rapists have self-identified as female and been recorded as such. Maya Forstater, executive director of campaign group Sex Matters, says police are putting the feelings of a perpetrator of a sexual crime ahead of the reality of the victim. “Imagine being the victim of that kind of crime and hearing the police and the courts calling your abuser a woman when you know that the person that assaulted you was a man.” In Britain, the gender war has claimed a number of prominent names, including the writer JK Rowling who was subjected to extreme levels of abuse after she took issue with an article
that referred to “people who menstruate”. “I’m sure there used to be a word for those people,” she wrote. “Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?” Our own Sonia O’Sullivan has run into similar, if less vicious, criticism for saying that ‘transgender women’ should not be allowed to compete in sport against ‘biological women’. It wasn’t fair, she said, that women who had been competing and training throughout their lives should suddenly face a competitor who had been a man and who retained the greater physical strength of s man. Sonia’s comment was prompted by the case of swimmer Lia Thomas who competed without much success on the University of Pennsylvania men’s team, then became a winner on the women’s team. Sonia O’Sullivan made it
clear that she had no issue with transgender women in general. JK Rowling said she “respects every trans person’s right to live in a way that feels comfortable to them” . I agree. The issue is not with biological men who say they are women, or women who say they have transitioned to be men. The issue arises when we try to define their claims in law, be it the law of the land or the law of a sport. I am perfectly happy to refer to a trans woman as Ms, or any other title she wishes to use, and I do not want her to be disrespected or stigmatised in any way. But there are times when a distinction needs to be made. There are places and spaces and events that have, for good reasons, been set aside for women. Before we remove the dividing walls we need to be very clear about the consequences.

Holly Blue
book of the week
with Justin Ivory
Holly Blue butterfly (Photo Justin Ivory) A walk with the family mutt and my teenage kids in glorious April sunshine on Saturday was brought to an abrupt halt when I hissed the command ‘Everybody freeze’. Quickly handing the pooches’ lead to my daughter to hold, I stealthily took my camera from my shoulder and dropping to one knee started firing off shots. A flash of delicate blue out of the corner of my eye had brought about this turn of events. My bemused teenagers were curious to know what it was. ‘It’s a Holly Blue butterfly’ I replied. ‘Is this the first time you have ever seen one?’ they enquired. ‘Not all. It’s just my first of the year’ I explain followed by eye-rolling and incredulous looks from the interrogators! The Holly Blue (Celastrina argiolus) is a beautiful, small, delicate gem of a butterfly. The upper wings are a beautiful light, lilac-blue. The male has very thin black borders on the wings. These black borders are much broader in females. The under-wings are a pale silvery, powder blue speckled with black spots.
Holly Blue (Photo Justin Ivory) We have two other species of blue butterfly in Ireland – the Common Blue (Polyommatus icarus) and the Small Blue (Cupido minimus). While the Holly Blue bears similarities to Common Blue males, it lacks the orange under-wing spotting of that species. Also of the three blue species, Holly Blue is more likely to be seen flying above head height around bushes and trees whereas the others fly lower to the ground. Eggs of the first (spring) brood are laid on Holly as this is the preferred food plant of the pale green caterpillars. When this second generation come to lay eggs completely different food plants are chosen for the larvae (caterpillars) with mainly Ivy being chosen but also Bramble and Dogwood. So it is really important we protect and promote these plants.

IN 1962, Emil Clément comes face to face with Paul Meissner at a chess tournament in Holland. They haven t seen one another in almost two decades. Clément, once known only as The Watchmaker, is a Jewish former inmate of Auschwitz. Whilst there, he was forced to play chess against Nazi guards. If he won, he could save a fellow prisoner s life; if he lost, he would lose his own. Meissner, a soft-spoken priest, was also at Auschwitz. He was the SS Officer who forced The Watchmaker to play. Gripping historical thriller.
A NEW comedy panel show, Clear History, fronted by Kevin McGahern, with team captains Joanne McNally and Colin Murphy. In the brand-new RTÉ2 series, which will rewrite the past in the name of comedy, weekly guests will be asked to put comically cringey moments from their personal histories on public display. Opposing teams will re-live iconic moments from the nation’s history as well as their own personal embarrassments, hoping to make them much funnier the second time around. Stars team leads Joanne McNally and Jason Byrne.
KEIRA (Elisha Cuthbert) and her husband Brian (Eoin Macken) move into an old house in Ireland with the hope of rebuilding their business and staving off financial ruin. However, the house’s cellar holds a dark and powerful entity and when their daughter (Abby Fitz) disappears into the cellar, Keira must venture after her in order to find her... it’s claim to Irish fame is that it was filmed in Roscommon and uses Clonalis House as its setting — but if could have been shot anywhere. A bit of a by the numbers scare, but worth a night out to support the domestic movie industry.

THE new series couresy of Amazon Prime, ’Hacks’ explores a dark mentorship that forms between Deborah Vance (Jean Smart), a legendary Las Vegas comedian, who is trying to salvage her waning career, and Ava (Hannah Einbinder), an entitled, outcast 25-year-old television writer. The duo realises they could help each other and decide to team up, but very reluctantly.

THERE are some great summery wines in stock now at Lidl with our favourite being the demi-sec Alsace Grand Cru Mambourg Gewurztraminer (€14.99). The wine bursts rose water aromas and has textured creamy fruits. While it might not be sweet enough for most desserts (fruit desserts might work), try it with a plate of cheese instead. Also look out for the Grand Tokaji Selection Furmint (€9.99) whihc is also lightly sweet and worth a try. And for that price, you can’t go wrong.

We will treasure the memories we have of you, We can’t believe you’re gone, You were a caring grandad, You were there for us a lot, You will always hold a place in our hearts, A loving treasured spot, You were really one in a million, A cut above the rest, All who knew you would agree, You simply were the best, So grandad we will say goodbye, We love and miss you with all our hearts, But as long as we have our loving memories, We will never be too far apart. - Thinking of you always grandad, love Ricky, Michelle, Jennifer and Johnathan, great grandchildren, Craig, Abigail, Aaron and Aoife
In loving memory of our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and aunt, Kitty Flynn, late of 91 Hennessey’s Road, Waterford who passed to her eternal reward on the 4th April 2007. Our hearts are full of memories, With pride we speak your name, Though life goes on without you, It will never be the same. Those special days will not return, When we were all together, But with love and memories You will walk with us forever. - Always remembered by your son David, daughter-in-law Ber, and grandchildren David and Ciara. A loving nature, a heart of gold, The very best this world could hold, Never selfish, always kind, These are the memories you left behind. A silent thought, a quiet prayer, For a special person in God’s care. - Loved and remembered, your son William, Fionnuala and grandsons Gary and Bill. Mam, I have a book of memories, It’s not upon a shelf, It’s deep within my heart, And I keep the key myself. I turn the key quite often, And I think of bygone days, I miss you so very much, In oh so many ways. - Loved always, your daughter Mary o holy st anthony Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore of you to obtain for me my request....(Pause) The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so you are the saint of miracles. O gentle and loving St Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, intercede for me and whisper my prayer into the ear of the sweet Infant Jesus who loved to linger in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will be yours. A.C.
Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Take it Dear Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart, where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. A.W.
A smile for all, a heart of gold, One of the best this world could hold. Never selfish, always kind, These are the memories you left behind. To hear your voice, to see your smile, To sit and talk with you a while, To be together in the same old way, Would be our dearest wish today. Though absent you are always near, Still loved, still missed and very dear. - Always loved and remembered by Kitty, Frank and family. Mam, When the emptiness of missing you, Is more than I can bear, I whisper “Mam I love you”, And always find you there. For you left behind your spirit, It guides me like a light, Your gentleness surrounds me, To be with me all my life. And when the road is rocky, And I’m down and need a crutch, I remember you’re beside me, Just an inch too short to touch. - Loved and missed every day, Anne. They say there is a reason, They say that time will heal, But neither time nor reason, Will change the way we feel. I’d give the world If I could say, I’m going to see My mam today. - Loved and missed, Des and Bean. In heaven you rest, No worries, no pain, In God’s own time, We will meet again. Simple words but very true, I will always remember and pray for you. - Always remembered by Harley. O.W. PRAYER TO ST JUDE Most holy apostle St Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus. I am so helpless and alone. I implore you to bring visible and speedy help. Come to my assistance in this great need (ask for favour). I will be ever mindful of this great favour, to always honour you as my special and powerful patron. Amen. Promise publication and favour will be granted P.G.
In loving memory of our dear mother Joan Casey, late of 9 Cherry Terrace, Lisduggan, whose anniversary occurs on the 5th April. Little we knew that morning, The sorrow that day would bring, the shock was great, the loss severe, to part with someone so very dear, Your end was sudden, Your thoughts unknown, But you left us with memories, We are proud to own. - Loved and remembered by your son in law Dave and grandson David Along the road of suffering, You found a little lane, That took you up to Heaven, And ended all your pain, You may be out of sight, We may be worlds apart. But you are always in our prayers, And forever in our hearts. - Loved always and never forgotten, your daughter Moira, son-in-law Eddie We had no time to say goodbye, But we know you are near to us, We love you now as always, And you are in our thoughts each day. - Always remembered, your sister Mary, brother-in-law Nicky and family Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us every day, Unseen, unheard ut always near, Still loved, still missed, still very dear. - Loved and always remembered by your god-daughter Caroline We thought of you today, But that is nothing new, We thought of you yesterday And the day before that too, We will think of you tomorrow As we will our whole lives through For the day we fail to think of you Is the day God takes us too. - Loved and remembered, from your sister Breda and family. o holy st anthony Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore of you to obtain for me my request.
