Why we should all shop local this year AS we count down the days, hours and minutes to Christmas, we at Waterford Today would like to make one appeal before the festivities get into full swing — Shop in Waterford this Christmas. We’re getting behind the message from Waterford’s Local Enterprise Office which urges people to ‘Shop Waterford, Support Local’ this year. The campaign aims to put the spotlight on the retail options within our county — from artists to designers, food producers to craft makers and everything in between that makes Waterford the first and last stop for Christmas shopping. Every €10 spent locally on Irish products generates more than €40 of benefit to the local community. Commenting on the campaign, Richie Walsh, Head of Enterprise at the Local Enterprise Office, said the aim is to assist local businesses on the back of a challenging couple of years.
St.Anne’s joint captains, Tara Colfer and Katie Dunphy, after they defeated Tramore in the Hooper Dolan U-13 (A) Camogie County Final Replay at St.Saviour’s GAA Ground
“The livelihood of many small businesses has been threatened during the pandemic. However, many of these small business owners and sole traders took the initiative to move their business to include an online selling platform as well as the physical store. Now and in the run up to Christmas, we can browse in store and online when choosing to shop local. Just because people can and do buy their Christmas gifts online it doesn’t mean they cannot support local businesses. In 2020 the Local Enterprise Offices approved over 13,000 Trading Online Vouchers which enabled small businesses to set up an online trading presence. Local businesses not only keep the economy humming, but they also add to the quality of life in our community in other ways. Seeing local businesses thrive also gives you the feeling that you’re living in a vibrant community, a desirable place to live, work and raise a family. Continued on next page

Lessons in recycling at St Augustine’s College
Students of St Augustine’s College, with Margo McGann, Transition year Co-ordinator, Deputy Mayor Seanie Power, Principle Michael O’Sullivan, and Ella Ryan Environmental Awareness Officer. SECONDARY schools in Waterford, including St Augustine’s, got behind National Re-use Month’s campaign to get more people reusing and recycling. As part of the recent national campaign, people were encouraged to re-use more in every aspect of daily life. Schools learned about the benefits of refilling a reusable bottle with water versus using a single use water bottle and disposing of it. The online workshop was
held by Waterford City and County Council and the students of St Augustine’s College, Dungarvan, took action in their community by encouraging local businesses to offer water refills and register to appear on Refill. ie’s Tap Map — a site which shows all the locations in Ireland where a free water refill is available. Ella Ryan, Environmental Awareness Officer with Waterford City and County Council, said: “Schools
across the county have done tremendous work for this competition.” “This campaign has highlighted the benefits of refilling and reusing, not just within the school but across the wider community. “We were delighted to receive LAPN funding from the EPA to run this competition. I would encourage everyone to look at the Tap Map on Refill.ie to check where their local refill points are located.”
Plea to shop local this year
Continued from front page Local businesses are owned and operated by local people, while even the chain stores are managed and run by people who live in our community. This campaign seeks to strengthen that sentiment and to educate consumers on the domino effect local spending has throughout their community. They work here, coach the local sports teams, eat in local restaurants and live just down the street — so when you buy in local shops, you’re supporting your neighbours. Customer service of the kind you thought had disappeared can still be found in the smallest of local businesses. And while all the indications are that the country is beginning to re-emerge after the worst recession in living memory, we must remember one thing — we are more than just an economy. Waterford FC ‘active’ in search for new manager
FOLLOWING his club’s relegation, Waterford FC owner Richard Forrest has reassured fans he is here to stay, and that plans are in place for life in the First Division next season. After a tough spell for the club, Forrest took a period of reflection before committing for the 2022 season, where he has confirmed that the club are “actively” seeking a new manager and will remain a “fulltime” outfit. Speaking for the first time since the relegation blow, Forrest said: “As a football club we were bitterly disappointed to be relegated to the First Division [...], but it’s something that we don’t want to dwell on. “As owner of the club, I have always wanted the best for Waterford, and I’m now firmly focused on leading Waterford FC back to the Premier Division. “We know it’s going to be tough going, but we’re hoping that with the support of the local community, we can hit the ground running,” he said. “The club is currently actively looking to recruit a new first-team manager — a manager that will best suit the club. There was such a good vibe around Waterford when I took over last year, and I’m hoping that we can build on that for the coming year. “I think it’s important that we
remain as a full-time club, and with that in mind, I’m delighted to confirm that we will be staying as a full-time outfit in the First Division. “We received such great support at the RSC last season, and I would like to thank everyone that supported us. “The club currently have a base of players signed for next season, and there will be further additions based on the style of football that we will play once we have a manager appointed. When we have all that in place, I look forward to holding an open session with people as we look to build this club going forward. “We’re hoping to have some exciting local talent in the squad next season, and I’m excited with the plans that we have in place for the 2022 season. “With the festive season fast approaching, work is currently been done on season tickets, and we’ll be unveiling a new jersey. “The club will make further announcements on these in the near future, but they will be ready for Christmas. “I’d like to thank the people of Waterford for their support since I arrived here, and I’ve received some personal messages in the last few days that have been amazing. It has giving me a lift as I try to lead this club forward into a new chapter.”

Stroll in nature as new Suir River Walk opens JUST in time to plan that bracing walk over Christmas, the enhanced Suir River Walk, with a newly extended pathway from Maypark Village to Cove Lane, has now opened to the public. Improvements to the 3km of woodland trail included the widening of paths, realigning of the path to avoid mature trees, the installation of culverts, fencing, and a new entrance was created at Cove Lane, while the entrance at King’s Channel was improved. Overall, the works have made it more accessible to a wide range of users. Fergus Galvin, Director of Services at Waterford Council said the improvements will undoubtedly make the trail even more appealing. “It was a somewhat well kept secret amongst those in the vicinity. While the infrastructure was already there with a path from the Kings Channel entrance right through to Freshfield, these works have greatly enhanced the trail, and extended it a further 500 metres
From left: Patrick Kirwan, Assistant Engineer; Jennifer Dornan, Executive Technician; Sean Gormley, Executive Engineer; Fergus Galvin, Director of Services at Waterford Council; Mayor of Waterford Cllr Joe Kelly. to Cove Lane. Our ultimate ambition would be to extend the pathway all the way into the heart of the city centre, creating a continuous 4.3km long path from Ballinakill to Georges Quay and we will be developing plans during 2022 to achieve
this,” he added. The walkway is bounded by the River Suir to the north and sloping woodlands to the south. With intriguing glimpses of the River Suir, careful consideration was given to the preservation of the indigenous
woodland, which comprises of oak, yew, holly, beech and ash trees. The works were completed in 2021, after Waterford City & County Council received funding from the National Transport Authority

Covid Consequences: family game where everyone’s a loser
A
S they do every winter, the ESB has been issuing warnings about not approaching fallen wires and the Road Safety Authority is cautioning against driving through flooded roads.
It’s sound advice but you don’t have to take it. If you want to move the cable that is blocking your path, or test your car’s ability to float, nobody will stop you. You will have to live with the consequences but you won’t be breaking the law. And there’s nothing remarkable about that. It’s how we treat
most advice that applies only, or mainly, to our own safety. Check your fire alarm,we are told; get your chimney cleaned, don’t let Daniel O’Donnell service your gas boiler. We weigh it up and, because it is wellmeaning advice from wellinformed people, we go along with it. Or ignore it, if we think

we know better. The choice is ours and we’re happy with that. Except when it comes to Covid. Then, it seems, a lot of us want rules written into law, so we don’t have to make a decision. Thus the fuss over advice that children should mix a bit less with their mates. When Nphet first issued the guidance, airwaves and social media were swamped by a tide of parental indignation. Mothers and fathers bewailed the suffering inflicted on their children by the loss of sleepovers, birthday parties and pantomimes. When the Government finally got round to issuing its own recommendations there was, in fact, no mention of pantos. But it didn’t matter anyway because this was, and is, advice, not law. Wise advice, in my opinion. But if you think differently, and can persuade other parents to send their children to your sleepover, party, or whatever, nobody will stop you. You’ve heard the opinion of experts and the possible consequences of ignoring it. So the choice is yours. The same goes for the guidance on the number of people you should allow in your home over Christmas. If it were a law it would be unenforceable. But it’s not. It’s a choice . You can reject the advice if you want and then you must live with the consequences. Some of us don’t want choice
Michael Wolsey
and a lot of those who do would rather not be faced with consequences. They choose not to let their child wear a mask at primary school but are appalled by the consequence that the child may not be allowed into the school or, at very least, will be the odd one out in their class. A teacher told me of a confrontation with a parent who refused to get her son vaccinated but still wanted him to go on a trip to France being organised for next spring. The teacher explained that the matter was out of his hands. The tour company organising the trip simply would not accept an unvaccinated child. The mother protested vehemently that she had a right to deny her son vaccination. The teacher agreed but pointed out that the coach operators and airlines had a right to pick their
passengers and that the French government had a right to decide who it would let into the country. There was no meeting of minds because, while this woman was prepared to make a choice, she did not want to live with the consequences. This only seems to be a problem when Covid rules are involved. I have heard people complain because they were not allowed to enter a nightclub (remember those?) without a vaccination certificate. The same club would probably have refused them admission if they had turned up wearing runners and a tracksuit. They might not like that either, but they understand it’s a consequence of breaching the dress code. An airline will not allow you to fly if you arrive blind drunk at its desk, some bus companies won’t let you on board if you are carrying food and you can’t play for the All Blacks if you insist on wearing a white shirt. The choice is yours, but you have to accept the consequences. It’s tempting to pass responsibility to someone else. The Government does it all the time: “We follow the public health advice.” And Nphet does it too: “That is an executive decision.” That’s how the game of Covid Consequences is played. It’s a game where everybody scores points but nobody wins.

WALK The Line is described as a “brand new high octane musical game show format” that comes from Simon Cowell’s Syco company and Lifted Entertainment, the team behind both I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! and Love Island. Oh God . . . anyway, hosted by Maya Jama, with judges Gary Barlow, Craig David, Dawn French and Alesha Dixon, in each episode, acts will perform to win the audience vote, but they will then be faced with a tough decision. DECLAN O’Rourke’s award-winning album, Chronicles of the Great Irish Famine, was released to critical acclaim in 2017. It illuminated an extraordinary series of eyewitness accounts, including the story of Pádraig and Cáit ua Buachalla. Four years on, in Declan’s meticulously researched literary debut, the story of the ua Buachalla family is woven into a powerful, multilayered work showing us the famine as it happened through the lens of a single town – Macroom, Co. Cork – and its environs.
SET in Montana, shot in New Zealandm, this brooding western of sorts focuses on masculinity in crisis. Think a far more intense Brokeback Mountain. In loving Memory of my Wonderful Mam on your anniversary, I thought of you today, But that is nothing new, I thought about you yesterday, And will tomorrow too, I think of you in silence, And make no outward show, For what it meant to lose you, Only those who love you know, Remembering you is easy, I do it every day, Its just the heartache of losing you, Will never go away. - Your loving daughter Margaret & son-in-Law Colin In loving Memory of my Mam on your anniversary, So many happy memories Mam, Come flooding back today, Of life before you went away, Those wonderful occasions, Never changed throughout the years, But now your smile is missing, Replaced with tears, You may not be here with us, But they mean just as much, And we can feel your presence, And the comfort of your touch,
o holy st anthony Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore of you to obtain for me my request. The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so you are the saint of miracles. O gentle and loving St Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, intercede for me and whisper my prayer into the ear of the sweet Infant Jesus who loved to linger in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will be yours. Birthday Remembrance Kathleen Kelly
In loving memory of Kathleen Kelly, late of 95 Dominic Place, Waterford whose 89th birthday occurs on 11th of December. RIP. Mass will be held on Sunday December 15th in Carbally Church at 11:30am. Softly in the morning, You heard a gentle call, You took the hand God offered you, And quietly left us all. The day you left us mother, Our hearts just broke in two, The smallest part is still with us, And the biggest part with you. For the rest of our lives We will miss you mother, Our secret tears still flow, Oh, how we really loved you, No one will ever know. We miss your smile, your joking ways, We miss the things you used to say, And when old times we do recall, It’s then we miss you most of all. You were always there when we needed you, No task too great or small, With loving heart & willing hands, For us you did it all. Look around your garden Lord, And when she turns & smiles,
12th Anniversary Nora Jacob
They say there is a reason, They say that time will heal But neither time nor reason Will change the way we feel. For no-one knows the heartache That lies beneath our smiles, No-one knows how many times We have broken down & cried. Gone from home that smiling face, Those cheerful, happy ways, The heart that won so many friends, In bygone, happy days. We want to tell you something, So there won’t be any doubt, You’re so wonderful to think of But so hard to be without. - Always remembered & sadly missed by your son Paul, Sharon & Shannon. Do not stand at my grave & weep, I am not there, I do not sleep, I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow, I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain, When you awaken in the morning’s hush, I am the swift uplifting rush, Of quiet birds in circled flight, I am the soft stars that shine at night, Do not stand at my grave & cry, I am not there, I did not die. - Always remembered and sadly missed by your daughter Angela

In Loving Memory Unseen and unheard but always near, So loved, so missed, so very dear 14th Anniversary JOHN GREY If I could only see you, For just a little while, To tell you that I miss you, And see your lovely smile, No matter how I spend my day, No matter what I do, Before I close my eyes at night, I pray and think of you. Meet me in my dreams, Please talk to me once more, Ease my everlasting pain, That makes my heart so sore, I know you walk beside me, And when my life is through, I pray that God will take my hand, And lead me sraight to you. Of all the things that I have done, Or as I listen to the words of a song that you have sung, Often I feel so sad, That the tears start to flow, It’s then I really miss you, More than anyone can know. When last I looked upon your face, I tried hard not to cry, I bent down and kissed you, And then I said goodbye. To hold you close, And talk to you, And see your gentle face once more, But God would never grant this wish, God knows if I had you back, I would never let you go. - Love always, your heartbroken Mam We are just an average family, We never ask for more, Then life was changed completely, With that knock upon the door, This awful thing had happened, And none of us knew why, You were never coming back John, We never said goodbye, Our world just fell to pieces, We cried in disbelief, We had to stick together, To overcome our grief, We’ll never understand it, It all seems so unfair, We wish we’d hear that knock again John, And see you standing there. Rest in peace. -Love always, your heartbroken Dad The moment that you died, My heart was torn in two, One side filled with heartache, The other died with you, I often lie awake at night, When the world is fast asleep, And take a walk down memory lane, With tears upon my cheeks, Remembering you is easy, I do it everyday, But missing you is a heartache, That never goes away, I hold you tightly within my heart, And there you will remain. - Always loved and remembered by your brother Mark. When we last saw your smiling face, You looked so bright and well, Little did we know that day was to be your last farewell, To us you were someone special, Someone kind and true,
We will never forget. When thoughts come by, as often they do, We will treasure the memories We have of you. - From Carmel and family Out of our lives you may be gone, But in our hearts you still live on, Will those who think of him today, A little prayer to Jesus say. -From Catherine, Annette Birmingham
In loving memory of John Grey, late of 215 Ballybeg Square who died on the 8th December 2007 You will never be forgotten, For we thought the world of you, Sunshine passes & shadows fall, But love and memories outlast them all. - Love, your brother Michael We won’t forget the face we loved, Or the memories of your smile, Or the countless things you did for us, To make our lives worthwhile, You were always there with a helping hand, To listen, advise & understand, A special brother so very rare, When we needed you You were always there, - Always loved and remembered by your sister Michelle, nieces Kiana & Paige and baby Daniel John xxx Eight years have passed, How quickly time goes by, Our thoughts of you go on and on, But the memories never die. -Love from Sinéad, Daniel and your nephew Zack and niece Sofia Out of our lives you may be gone, But in our hearts you still live on, Will those who think of them today, A little prayer to Jesus say. -From Lillian and niece Eria December is here with sad regret, The day, the month, we will never forget, You left us quietly without a fuss, And broke the hearts of all of us. Memories are something no one can steal, Death is a heartache no one can heal, Time slips by and life goes on, But from our hearts you are never gone, Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed, but very dear. -From your friend Linda, Coireall, Michael & Aaron Quietly today, your memory is kept, No need for words,
Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Take it Dear Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart, where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. A.W.
I speak your name with love and pride, I smile through tears I cannot hide, Death does not part us or distance divide, Each day of my life you walk by my side. Thank you for the years we shared. The love you gave and the way you cared, Look after him Lord, as he takes his rest, For he is my grandson, and one of the best. -From your loving Nanny Blondie Moran To take you the way he did They say he only takes the best And this he surely did Look around your garden Lord For an angel with a smile And kiss his smiling face For he is very special And can never be replaced. - John, sadly missed, your Uncle Johnny You always had a smile to share, Time to give and time to care, Time shall pass and tears shall dry, But memories of you will never die. - Mudball, you will always be remembered. Sadly missed, your uncle Davy Like falling leaves the years roll by, But memories of you Will never die, Sunshine passes, shadows fall, But memories of you outlast them all. - From Helen, Tony and family There is a sadness in my heart, That I cannot explain, Each time I think of you John, All I can feel is pain, The memories that I have of you, Are when you were young and full of fun, I know that one day I will see you again, So goodbye my dear John, Until then. - From his Godmother Ann, and Seamus, Patrick, Kyle and Kaylim They say there is a reason, They say that time will heal, But neither time nor reason Will change the way I feel, We cannot bring the old days back When we were all together, But memories live forever. - Your cousins Jayo, Robert, Kathleen & Emma

Cheers! Distillery is tops again
Waterford Distillery won Distiller of The Year - the industry’s main award - for the second year in a row recently. In a return to in-person awards ceremonies, Irish whiskey’s great and good gathered together at the Iveagh Garden Hotel in Dublin on 25th November for the Icons of Whisky Ireland 2022 regional awards, hosted by Whisky Magazine. The Icons of Whisky awards aim to celebrate the best and brightest people and places in the sector – not just the distilleries and the teams that work in them, but also the individuals and businesses that work to support and promote them and their products. “Our distiller of the year - Waterford Distillery - has demonstrated exceptional attention to detail in its whiskey making, with provenance at
the core of its production. This was highlighted perhaps most interestingly in its recent participation in a peer-reviewed American research project, which, with the expertise of leading spirits researchers, sought to show that barley’s provenance has a clear influence on the finished whiskey. Our winning distillery, unsurprisingly, also has a clear commitment to Irish barley, and local farmers. Furthermore, this ties in with its commitment to sustainability. This distillery doesn’t value one thing above another; rather, it recognises that there are myriad factors that must be considered to create great whiskey – and they’re showing us just how it’s done.” Pictured: Head Distiller, Ned Gahan, is pictured on the night with the prestigious Distiller of the year award.
