Take-off for €12m airport extension AFTER a two-year wait, Waterford Airport has been given the green light by An Bord Pleanala for an extension of its runway. Waterford City and County Council applied for permission for the extension in 2020, and it means the runway is set to increase to 2,287 from 1,433 metres. It is hoped the funding can now be raised to complete the project and make the airport an attractive option to commercial airline carriers. No commercial flights have operated at the airport in more than five years. The project is expected to cost about €12m. Commenting on the longrunning campaign, Waterford Chamber CEO Gerard Hurley said: “Securing the necessary funding will continue to be a priority for us. “We have vigorously lobbied Government on this extension, [right up to last week in fact], as it is one of the key requirements of many of our members in industry.”

He said they are now one step closer to having an airport, which will help the southeast region in terms of attracting foreign direct investment and allowing more tourism. Meanwhile, Sinn Féin TD for Waterford, David Cullinane, said the airport had “no sustainable future without a runway extension or commercial flights.” “Hopefully this is a step forward in a process that will see commercial flights again take off from our airport. Waterford Airport is critical to Waterford and the region,” he added. “The next step must now be to secure the funding to complete the works and, as a consequence, send a signal that Waterford Airport is serious about expansion.” Mr Cullinane said the Government now needs to provide the support as the southeast region attempts to Continued on next page

Airport extension approved

Continued from front page expand, beginning with the airport. Waterford Fine Gael senator John Cummins, who is a former member of the airport board, said it is a critical piece of infrastructure. “It makes the possibility of securing routes for the airport far more likely into the future than what was the case heretofore,” Mr Cummins said. “For too long the runway has been an impediment to the growth of the airport. The types of aircraft that were able to land at the runway were restricted, so the planning application that has been approved will facilitate the landing of the main aircrafts of choice for major airlines,” he added. The airport received a commitment of €5m capital funding from the Department of Transport in 2019, but this was partly contingent on planning. Other funding was to be provided by a local consortium of companies combined with local councils in Waterford, Wexford and Kilkenny. It is understood an investment plan is go before board members and the council imminently.

‘Ambitious plan’ will revitalise towns in the county

A NEW ‘Town Centre First’ policy will revitalise towns across County Waterford and benefit local communities, a Waterford Fine Gael Senator has said. Senator Cummins said: “Fine Gael is working to create stronger, safer communities and this new ‘Town Centre First’ policy is crucial to that. It is designed to support the regeneration of our towns and villages with targeted funding to support above-shop and town centre living. “This ambitious and farreaching policy contains a range of measures and funding supports aimed at making towns in Waterford more viable and attractive places in which to live, work and visit, whilst ensuring they are social, cultural and services hubs for the local community,” he added. “The ‘Town Centres First’ policy contains a major new strategy to tackle vacancy, combat dereliction and breathe new life into town centres. “This has been a key priority for Fine Gael and something on which we have been working hard. Prior to Christmas my colleague Deputy Higgins and I launched a discussion which put forward 26 proposals for consideration, which could enhance by over 10,000 the number of vacant homes becom-

ing available for early use.” Announcing ‘Town Centre First’, Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys TD said: “‘Town Centre First’ represents a new approach to revitalising communities the length and breadth of this country. This is about bringing together our businesses, our local authorities and our town teams, so that they are at the fore when it comes to planning for the future development of their communities.” Waterford will now gain their own dedicated Town Regeneration Officers, who will be crucial to driving future development. They will be full-time dedicated positions within Waterford City and County Council, working with Town Teams and local business groups to design and implement town plans. They will also work to identify derelict buildings and assist in bringing them back into use. Senator Cummins added: “Our towns will benefit from Government funding, which will emphasise the importance of town centres as the central hub of our communities. Portlaw was chosen as Waterford’s pilot for the town centre first plan and an allocation of €100,000 was made last December.”

662 new cars hit the roads in Waterford

A TOTAL of 662 new cars were registered in Waterford at the start of the year, compared with 612 last year. The Society of the Irish Motor Industry released the figures for January 2022 as battery technology cars have seen the greatest increase in market share for January, accounting for over 46% of the new car market nationwide. There was a significant increase in growth for hybrid

(26.5%), plug-in hybrid (8.4%) and electric (10.8%) market share. Despite a large decrease in market share for internal combustion engine type vehicles, petrol is now dominant (28.6%), while diesel declined to (22.4%). Used car imports seen a 40.8% (4,041) decrease in January when compared with January 2021 (6,821). Automatic transmissions (57.1%) have also increased their market share.

Brighter future for Theatre Royal

A project led by Theatre Royal Waterford has been selected as one of the five arts projects in the country for funding from the ESB ‘Brighter Future Arts Fund’. The €250,000 fund was established in 2021 to support artists and arts organisations to deliver creative projects that will promote awareness of climate change and inspire positive action. On the back of the funding, Eco-sculptor Elaine McDonough will create a large-scale willow and recycled metal pollinator sculpture in the theatre’s ‘All the World’s a Climate Stage’ biodiversity garden, which will be designed by Eoin Dullea, Horticulturist with Waterford City & County Council. The sculpture and garden will be the first step in Theatre Royal’s transformational ‘green journey’ and will be in alignment with Waterford Council’s 2040 ambitions to become Ireland’s first decarbonised city. The Project is due to begin in March 2022 and be ready for public use by October 2022.

Only way is up: Deise mountains are tops ONE of the leading manufacturers in outdoor and adventure gear, Blacks, based in the UK, has placed County Waterford in sixth place when it comes to the best destinations for a mountain and walking holiday. In carrying out the research, for the blog, Blacks compared a number of mountain ranges around the world, as well as each county in the UK and Ireland, analysing several

factors to calculate the score. While The Pyrenees came out on top with an overall score of 7.9, Waterford was placed sixth with a score of 6.2. The criteria used to calculate the score ranged from the number of trails, the number of global Google searches made for each destination, the number of Instagram posts mentioning the destination, climate and of course, hotels and accommodation.

Offering some advice for anyone thinking of heading to the mountains this year, Kiera Baxter, Adventurer and Marketing Executive at Blacks, said: “A great mountain holiday is all in the planning. “It’s vital to take your time planning everything from your routes to your accommodation to ensure you’ve considered all eventualities and don’t get caught out. “Back up your routes with

safer alternatives and have a plan in mind for the unexpected. “The biggest priorities being a close eye on your weather conditions, daylight hours and a solid idea in mind about your supply stops and accommodation. My three top tips if travelling overseas are: to make sure you are familiar with national holidays, understand your destination’s mountain etiquette and to learn some basic phrases in the local language.”

WOMEN for Election aims to encourage at least 1,000 women to contest the next local elections in 2024, including a significant increase in the number of women on election tickets across Waterford’s electoral areas. Of the 32 elected members to Waterford County Council, just four are women, giving an 13% representation, under the national average of 25%. Of the four Waterford seats available in General Election 2020, one woman was returned. Caitriona Gleeson, CEO of Women for Election, said that if Waterford and Ireland is to reach the stated aim of 50/50 gender representation in politics by the end of this decade, things have to change, ensuring that there is at least 50/50 representation on the ballot papers from the 2024 local elections. So whether you want to drive, walk, dance, hop, skip, or jump your way along the parade

route, now is the time to get involved. As Waterford was Ireland’s first City to hold a St. Patrick’s Day parade, back in 1903, over the years the Waterford parades have become synonymous with colour, culture and creativity. tV of the week

Redwing (Photo Justin Ivory)

The recent cold snap has seen an influx of thrushes to the country as they seek to escape the worst of the worst of the wintry conditions. This movement includes my two favourite thrush species Redwing (Turdus iliacus) and Fieldfare (Turdus pilaris). Both species are just winter visitors to Ireland and do not breed here. Redwing is a common winter visitor to Ireland with birds coming from the Icelandic and Scandinavian breeding populations. Smaller than a Blackbird and bearing a passing resemblance to a Song Thrush, Redwing have a distinctive vivid creamy-white stripe over the eye (supercilium) and submoustachial stripe. They also have a distinctive rusty-red patch on the flanks when at rest. In flight they show an unmistakable rusty-red armpit where the wings meet the body. They typically travel at night and on a still winters night you can often hear their tell-tale high-pitched ‘tseep’ call. Its Irish name Deargán sneachta, means ‘red one of the snow’ confirming its association with arriving in harsh, cold conditions. Fieldfare come here from their breeding grounds in Scandinavia and other parts of continental Europe. They are considerable bigger than Redwing almost as big as a Mistle Thrush. They have a very handsome and distinctive plumage – grey head, nape and rump and chestnut brown upper-parts. The breast has heavy spotting/streaking on a buffy-yellow background. They make a loud, noisy chacking sound in flight. The name Fieldfare comes from old Anglo-Saxon meaning ‘traveller over the fields’. Both species favour open fields in lowland areas and tend to avoid suburban and urban areas unless the weather gets really harsh when they will visit gardens. They both like to feed on earthworms, berries and other fruit. They particularly like hawthorn berries. Keep an eye (and an ear) out for these really handsome winter visitors over the next few weeks.

AFTER Maria Kirwan died in a lonely inlet on Ireland’s Eye, it was decided that she had drowned accidentally during a day spent with her husband on the island. This inquest verdict appeared to conclude the case on what was then the small fishing village of Howth, Co Dublin, in September 1852. But not long afterwards, suspicion fell upon Maria’s husband, William Burke Kirwan. Investigations led to William’s arrest and trial for murder. But was he innocent? This book revisits the key evidence, asking sober questions about the fascinating Ireland’s Eye case files.

Dead as a doornail, which refers to a method of sealing coffins in Victorian times, is a little more familiar, but unused by 55% of those surveyed. Oddly, although they don’t use the phrases, many of the

people surveyed were sorry to hear they were threatened, with 73% saying their extinction would be a shame. I agree. So, as 71% of younger people never say, let me nail my colours to the mast and declare that, without them, having a chin wag (52%) will just not be tickety boo (57%) . If nothing else, the idioms are colourful and many have interesting origins stretching back centuries. Some, like the references to knickers and socks, need no explanation. Mad as a hatter comes from one of the characters Alice met in Wonderland and spending a penny (51%) dates to a time when one penny was the price of admission to a public toilet. Others have interesting historical associations . A flash in the pan (51%) goes back to the use of flintlock muskets in the late 17th century. Gunpowder,

in the pan of the musket, would be ignited by a spark and the explosion fired out the musket ball. Sometimes the powder would ignite without expelling the ball. It looked impressive but with no result - a flash in the pan. Nailing colours to the mast also dates back to the 17th century, this time to naval warfare. A ship’s colours, usually the national flag, would fly from the mast when the vessel went into battle and could be lowered as a sign of surrender. If a captain nailed the colours to the mast they could not be lowered, and he was declaring his intention to fight to the end. Some origins are contentious. Knowing your onions (68%) is attributed by many to Mr S.G Onions, a teacher who, in the 1840s, produced a series of fake coins to help English schoolchildren get to know real currency. But World Wide

Words, a website devoted to such matters, says this is a load of codswallop and the idiom was invented by the American magazine Harper’s Bazaar in 1922. Nobody is certain about the origin of codswallop (56%) but all agree it is relatively recent. The Oxford English dictionary thinks the term might derive from London fish markets in the 1950s when a codswalloper meant “a woman who cannot keep her mouth shut’. Later it became a euphemism for something more rude. As did ‘pardon my French’ (48%) which, in the 19th century, was used to poke fun at someone who used French words in affectation. Over the years, the phrase came to be offered as an excuse for some uttered profanity. My mother, who would be 100 this year had she lived, was a fund of unusual sayings.

When confronted with, say, stale bread or overcooked meat, she would declare it to be “as hard as the knockers of Newgate”. She had no idea where the phrase originated and neither had I, but Google says it relates to Newgate, the infamous London prison where, in the 18th and 19th century, debtors might be left to rot unless someone settled their account. The officers who dragged unfortunates off to this jail were known as Knockers, hard men in every way. That phrase has long since become extinct and if we don’t keep using the others it could all go pear-shaped (51%). Maybe I’m making a storm in a teacup (55%) or even flogging a dead horse (54%). But as us old folk say, a nod’s as good as a wink (65%) and stitch in time saves nine (65%). Know what I mean?

Finding a builder Continued from previous page Do not be fooled by fake builders. Some builders fraudulently claim membership of trade associations, so verify if one is a bona fide member or not. It’s time for homework! Once you have prepared a

list of potential builders, now it is time to start enquiring about the potential builders and people who have bought homes from them. Visit the builders personally and ask your queries. Check with them if they are insured or not. They should have insurance to protect themselves

and to deal their liability to you in the case of property damage or an injury or accident. It would also be good to visit a few recently built homes by the builder. Try to meet several home owners and collect a few random opinions. Ask them if they are happy with their homes, do they face any issues, was the builder prompt in addressing their issues, etc. This step helps you to get a genuine review in most cases. Short list and quotation Based on your meeting with the builders and the reviews you have collected, short list the builders and ask for quotations. The quotation should cover details like clearance, site maintenance, material supplies, etc. Ask for complete details in writing. Also, enquire if any approvals or permissions are required.

Choose quality and value! While making a decision based on the collected quotation, make it a point to pay attention to the quality of the construction features. Make sure about the quality of the carpeting, cabinetry, paint, etc.

40th Anniversary Mary Butler Birthday Remembrance Mary and Edward (Pop) Butler

40th Anniversary Betty mckenna

14th Anniversary Niall O’Regan

1st anniversary Antoinette Kavanagh

101st Birthday & 7th Anniversary of the late Terry Colbert, Rice Park.

In memory of Anita Doyle, 37 Avondale Lawn who died on the 10th February 2021.

We hold onto our memories, the ones that are so dear. To try to keep you always close now you are not near. You were called, it was your time. But it is so true you have left behind a legacy, there was no one like you.

Anita was a resident in St Josephs Home Ferrybank for four years prior to her death. Anita was predeceased by her husband Bill and her daughters Christine and Samantha and also her son Mark. Also by her parents William and Christine Kennedy 1 O Brien Street and her sisters Eily Guinan and Maryanne Kennedy and her brothers Tony, Paul and Liam. Anita lived for many years in Wales and returned home and started working for The Little Sisters Bunkers Hill. Anita was a co founder of the Suir Active Retirement and also on the committee of The South East Region of Active Retirement Ireland. She was deeply involved with both groups. She enjoyed all the activities and events that were organized. One of her greatest events was when she won The Best Dressed Lady in Gowran Park as Anita loved her style. Anita was involved with the groups until she decided she had to go into St Josephs Home due to poor health. Anita had only just celebrated her 86th birthday. Anita is sadly missed by family, neighbours and friends.

- Rest in Peace, from your son Pat. You are near, even if we don’t see you, you are with us. Even if you are far away you are in our hearts, in our thoughts, in our lives always. - From your son Fran. Today we light some candles, And say a special prayer. We go down memory lane, And know you are there. Our hearts are full of memories. With pride we speak your name. though life goes on without you, it will never be the same. - Happy Birthday from Martin, Jeannette, Rebecca, Christopher, Jack, Holly and Zack. Dearest Dad, Just to hear your voice and see your smile, To sit and talk with you a while, Would be my dearest wish today on your birthday, and every day - All our love, Grace, Paul, Ben, Alicia, Paul Og, Larry and Jamie o holy st anthony Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore of you to obtain for me my request. The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so you are the saint of miracles. O gentle and loving St Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, intercede for me and whisper my prayer into the ear of the sweet Infant Jesus who loved to linger in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will be yours. DP.

In loving memory of our dear mother Mary Butler, late of 36 Dominick Place, whose anniversary occurs on the 11th February and whose birthday occurs 27th February. R.I.P. MIRACULOUS, PRAYER TO ST. THERESA, THE LITTLE FLOWER O Glorious, st. Theresa whom Almighty God has raised up to aid and counsel mankind. I invite your miraculous intercessiodarraghn. In loving memory of Antoinette Kavanagh, Sion Hill House, Ferrybank, Waterford Who’s first anniversary occurs on the 12th February 2022. Anniversary mass offered on Saturday 12th February at 7.00pm in Sacred Heart Church, Ferrybank. I am home in Heaven, dear ones, Oh, so happy and so bright! There is a perfect joy and beauty In this everlasting light. All the pain and grief is over, Every restless tossing passed, I am now at peace forever, Safely home in heaven at last. Did you wonder why I so calmly, Trod the valley of the shade? Oh! But Jesus’ love illuminated, Every dark and fearful glade. And he came Himself to meet me, In that way so hard to tread, And with Jesus’ arm to lean on, Could I have one doubt or dread? Then you must not grieve so sorely, For I love you dearly still, Try to look beyond earth’s shadows, Pray to trust our Father’s Will. Sincere and true in heart and mind Sincere and true to all you knew - Always loved and remembered By your loving Husband George, Daughters Deirdre and Fiona, Sons-in-law James and Ray, Grandaughters Ella and Zoey, sister Ina, brother Pat & Extended Family and Friends.

A mass for Anita’s 1st anniversary is in The Sacred Heart The Folly on the 10th at 7pm.

Citywide community notes The 4 of Us at the Theatre Royal The Murphy brothers make a welcome return to the Theatre Royal,on Friday February 11th, following a major UK and Irish tour with folk legends Fairport Convention, and as special guests of Robert Plant’s latest band Saving Grace. Interspersed by Brendan Murphy’s often hilarious stories and musings on the band’s three decades in music, the set list features all the old hits, such as Mary, Drag My Bad Name Down and Sunlight, as well as tracks from their recent critically acclaimed album, Sugar Island. The success of this most recent album (hailed by Hot Press magazine as ‘excellent’) -along with the band’s awardwinning back catalogue and inclusion in prestigious lists such as TV3’s Top Ten Irish Bands of All Time and Today FM’s Top Five Irish Singles -has led to a string of sold-out live performances and rave reviews. The song choices hit home, delight the crowd and serve as a timely reminder just how many good songs in the tank they have. There is a remarkable freshness and vitality to their songbook. Kickstarting physical activity iniative launched A major new national campaign has been launched to get as many people as possible out exercising and participating in physical activity this year. The Sport Ireland ‘Winter Initiative’ calls on women, men, children, grandparents, cousins, neighbours, friends, work colleagues, aspiring sports stars and those who haven’t yet ‘got going’ in 2022 to get out walking, running, cycling or participating in some form of physical activity. A key focus of the initiative is to help clubs, organisations, gyms and sport & leisure centres bounce back from the challenges placed on them by the covid pandemic by ensuring people renew and reactivate their memberships and get back playing, training and exercising. And with over 750 events and activities planned across the country - including opening the Sport Ireland Campus up for ‘give it a try’

events - there is a specific focusing on encouraging people to try their hand at a new sport they may not have experienced before. Speaking as he launched the Winter Initiative, Minister Jack Chambers said: “We know the impact the pandemic has placed on the sports system, with grassroots clubs and organisations among the most impacted. “A key aim of the Winter Initiative is to support clubs, gyms and sports centres up and down the country by giving more people the extra incentive to renew their club membership or pay that gym fee. “Or even just go for a walk in your local community to get out and get active again this January.” Sport Ireland CEO Una May commented: “The Winter Initiative is a reminder to try and make sport and physical activity a healthy habit in our lives and part of our daily routine.”

A LIFTING OF COVID RESTRICTIONS TOURNAMENT WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 7PM – 10 PM Calling all members. Time to enjoy your club again and get back to play. Meet up with old and new friends again. Dunmore Badminton Club is holding its first club tournament of the season. To enter and play in this team event, text your name to Seamus @ 0894431038. Entry fee is €5.

Common phone charger a step closer

Charger clutter could soon be a thing of the past, with the news that the European Council has backed proposals for a common standard. The new law aims to ensure all smartphones, tablets and similar devices, recharged by a wired cable, use a USB Type-C port, regardless of brand and make. The Council have also proposed an image to show if a charger is offered with a device, and a label to indicate charging specifications. Welcoming the news Ireland South MEP Deirdre Clune says “the delivery of a common phone charger will be more convenient, save money for consumers and reduce electronic waste. These proposals will significantly reduce the number of chargers in homes and could save €250 million a year on unnecessary charger purchases. Electrical and electronic equipment continues to be one of the fastest growing waste streams in the EU. Figures suggest that reducing production and disposal of new chargers could reduce electronic waste by thousands of tonnes a year.”
