Why are we the worst for Covid?
City and county have higest rates of virus in country
A WATERFORD GP has claimed we are now experiencing the worst level of Covid-19 in the country because we were effectively spared the brunt of the virus during earlier waves. Dr Niall Macnamara, who is part of the Keogh Practice in Waterford city, said vaccines are “not anything like as effective as we initially thought they might be” in stopping the spread of Covid-19. It comes as five of the six local authority areas in the county have a 14-day incidence rate of more than 1,000 cases per 100,000 of the population, meaning in the last fortnight one person in every 100 has tested positive. Waterford City South has the highest rate in the State with a 14-day incidence rate of 1,481.7 per 100,000 last week. Yet some 96.6% of people over the age of 12 and 99.5% of people over 18 are fully

vaccinated in the county. During the second wave in the late summer of 2020, and the third, wave during January and February this year, Waterford had the lowest rates of Covid-19 in the State. “We were spared in Waterford the brunt of the first couple of waves of Covid. Yes, we got hit like everyone else after Christmas, but at no point did we get hit to the same extent as most of the rest of the country,” Dr Macnamara said. “This means that the natural immunity one would get from people having contracted Covid-19, there are very few people in Waterford who have had that. Therefore, it was fertile soil for Delta to spread once it arrives.” He said vaccine boosters will be successful in stopping the spread of Covid-19 in the community. Booster shots are currently being rolled out to people aged 60 and over, and to frontline healthcare workers.

Better than we Imagined as festival a huge success Waterford author Megan Nolan (right) on stage at Theatre Royal during the Imagine Arts Festival
City road closure RESIDENTS of Broad Street, in Waterford City, and commuters who may use the road, have been advised that the road in Waterford City will be closed from today for two months for the installation of the main city Christmas tree. It will reopen on January 11th, 2022. No vehicular access will be possible from Patrick Street to John Roberts Square during this period.
THE organisers behind the 20th annual Imagine Arts Festival say they are delighted with its success and audience feedback. A full programme of events took place last month across the city, offering a showcase of multi-disciplinary arts events which also included Waterford Writers’ Weekend. Festival Manager Nora
Boland said: “Our 20th annual festival was a huge success and we are delighted to have been able to host our hybrid programme of events, support the artists and bring live events to audiences at venues across Waterford. “The Pandemic has seen the arts sector decimated and last year’s festival was held completely online. We
were therefore thrilled to be in a position to see live events return and the arts celebrated once again.” Some of the festival big names included authors Megan Nolan, Sophie White, Seamas O’Reilly and Ronan Hession and comedian Colm O’Regan took to the stage for a much-needed dose of comedy at the Theatre Royal.
Council to meet again on area’s ‘potential’
THE meeting with all Carrickpherish stakeholders which was abandoned due to Covid restrictions is now back in planning by the Council’s Housing Department, local Fianna Fail Councillor Eamon Quinlan announced. Waterford City and County Council should be in a position to release full details of the community meeting in the coming weeks. The meeting will form part of the council’s strategy to tackle some of the area’s issues with those who live in the wider community, as well as those charged with developing the area in the coming years. Commenting on the need for the meeting, Cllr Quinlan said: “Carrickpherish has a lot of potential but has effectively been paused since the crash . . . Carrickpherish has two primary schools, a library, a sports hub, shop, take away, bus routes etc so the attraction is there if we can get everyone on the same hymn sheet to make a go of the area properly, once and for all. We have no choice but to make Carrickpherish succeed.”
Charity calls for an end to puppy farming
DOGS Trust Ireland has just launched a poignant campaign calling for an ‘End to Puppy Farming’. The charity is urging the public to be the voice for the voiceless mums and pups in Ireland by signing the petition to create a different type of demand – a demand to eradicate puppy farming in Ireland. This year alone, Dogs Trust cared for 130 victims of illegal puppy farming. The dogs suffered from terrible neglect and were described by the charity’s veterinary and behaviour teams as ‘terrified’ of human contact. So bad was the condition of the dogs’ coats, many had to be shaved upon arrival. Vets can usually estimate a dog’s age based on the condition of their teeth, but many of the dogs had such severe dental disease, this proved impossible. Speaking about the campaign, Becky Bristow, Executive Director at Dogs Trust Ireland, said: “While the term ‘puppy farm’ may conjure images of fluffy puppies roaming free, nothing could be further from the truth. The condition of the dogs we took in was appalling. Their physical neglect and the pain many of them were in was shocking enough but their sheer terror and avoidance of humans is something that will stay with our team forever. “When the dogs were discov-
ered and when they arrived into our care, the silence was deafening, they were literally too afraid to bark or indeed make any sound at all. Even the sound of our footsteps approaching, had them running to hide and huddle together for comfort. It was absolutely heartbreaking to witness.” Ciara Byrne, who is Head of Communications at Dogs Trust Ireland, added: “Sadly, the pandemic has been a puppy farmer’s dream come true. “The massive demand for dogs, especially ‘designer crossbreeds, saw dogs advertised online at huge prices, meaning huge profits for many unscrupulous, greedy breeders. “We are pleading with people who buy puppies to please source them responsibly, as failure to get them from a reputable source is supporting this abhorrent trade. It’s also creating lives of misery for the parents, especially the mums who churn out litter after litter from dark, squalid little pens.” Dogs Trust is urging the public to sign their petition to help end the misery and suffering caused by puppy farming in Ireland. Find Dogs Trust on Facebook and Instagram or follow the conversation on Twitter using the hashtag #EndPuppyFarming. For the petition, go to: Dogstrust.ie/ EndPuppyFarming.

of hope inspire Cases of drink Stories Waterford commuters spiking on rise as clubs open
STUDENT Unions have issued warnings of the increasing potential risk of spiking as nightclubs are back open. It comes as gardai are investigating reports from a young woman who alleges she was left with injuries consistent with being pricked by a needle while out socialising in Dublin. There have been several further reports in recent weeks of people being injected with drugs without their knowledge in bars and nightclubs. People can also fall victim to so-called ‘date-rape’ substances slipped into their drinks. The Garda Press Office confirmed that officers at Store Street were investigating a report from a female in relation to an alleged assault. “The nature of the incident is that the female became disorientated whilst socialising in a licensed premises and discovered the following morning physical bruising possible caused by a
needle prick,” a spokesperson said. “The injured party in this case was supported by friends and brought home safely on the night and subsequently received medical treatment. An Garda Siochana continue to liaise with and support the injured party. Gardai have advised any victims of similar incidents or any form of ‘drug spiking’ to come forward and report such incidents. Following the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions on late bars and clubs, the UCD Students’ Union said it been informed of possible spiking instances as young people began to socialise again. The union shared posts across its social media channels to highlight the signs that could mean someone potentially has been the victim of a spiking or that someone’s drink has been tampered with. Union welfare officer,
Molly Greenough, said it was “incredibly disheartening” to see the rise in reported cases of spiking across Ireland and the UK. “It is vital to emphasise that the onus never lies on the victim to not be spiked, but rather on the perpetrator to not commit such a heinous crime,” she said. “Still, it’s important that students are equipped with the knowledge to better help them protect themselves and look out for their friends. Finally, and while these can be tough conversations to have, it’s important for those in a position of privilege to safely call out peers on unacceptable behaviours when you see it happening.” Students’ union gender equality campaign co-ordinator Niamh Scully said there are signs students can look out for if someone had been spiked. Some of the signs include the person feeling dizzy, slurring their words, memory loss or a loss of consciousness.

WATERFORD’S water quality has significantly improved, following the investment in wastewater infrastructure in Lismore, Ardmore, Ballyduff/ Kilmeadan, Cappoquin, Dunmore East, Kilmacthomas, Stradbally and Tallow, Irish Water said. The upgrades have also supported the development of new housing, tourism and businesses in these areas, including seaside towns with busy tourist trades and popular fishing locations, the utility added. Margaret Attridge, Regional Operations Manager at Irish Water, commented: “Having a modern, sustainable and functional wastewater network is critical in order to protect our environment and to support housing and economic growth in the years ahead. “Irish Water is working closely with the EPA and our other partners, including local authorities, to ensure this can be delivered in the most
efficient and sustainable way through the use of cuttingedge technologies, science and engineering expertise, and meaningful engagement with local communities around Ireland. The news comes as The latest Environmental Protection Agency publishes its Urban Wastewater Treatment Report, showing the progress being made, while also highlighting the need for continued investment in our essential wastewater services. Some 60% of Ireland’s raw sewage discharges have now been eliminated and 93% of treatment plants have been found to be compliant with the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive. Nationally, the majority of all raw sewage discharges are on track to be removed by the end of 2025. The largest remaining location that is not compliant with the Directive is Ringsend, which treats 44% of the country’s wastewater load.

Want to be a soccer star? Then get yourself a hyphen
T
here was a time when you could safely assume that anyone with a double-barrelled name was a chinless wonder, an upperclass toff like Britain’s former prime minister, Alec Douglas-Home, or its would-be prime minister, Jacob Rees Mogg. Now he (or, indeed, she) is more likely to be a professional footballer. You can accelerate with the pace of Mo Salah, swerve like Lionel Messi, or display the trickery of Cristiano Ronaldo, but for soccer success it’s hard to beat a hyphen. It is 28 years since England’s Premier League allowed clubs to display players’ names on the backs of their shirts. Across the 22 clubs there was just one player with a doublebarrelled name: Chris Bart-Wil-
Michael Wolsey
liams, a defensive midfielder with Sheffield Wednesday. Today there are more than 30 of them. Sorry to be vague about the number, but it keeps changing, partly because of transfers, but also because some players just like the sound of a second name and add one, usually the name of their mother. This name-game has drawn the attention of Debrett’s, the handbook of Britain’s upper classes, with one of its editors explaining: “Many women prefer to retain their maiden name in some form after marriage and to pass it on to any children. “A double-barrelled surname can be a form of compromise, ensuring that both members of a marriage feel that their family is represented through a combined surname.” Lawks! What will the ladies think of next? Some of them have even taken

to playing professional football. Like Caroline Graham-Hansen (Barcelona and Norway), Kim Maslin-Kammerdeiner (Patriots and USA) and Niamh ReidBurke (Peamount United and Ireland). It’s good news for those market traders who sell football shirts as a blank canvas and charge for each letter of a player’s name they put on the back. But where will it end? Trent Alexander-Arnold is expensive enough. Suppose he teams up with Kim MaslinKammerdeiner and their offspring is a talented footballer. Even if there’s room for the name of Bartholomew Alexander-Arnold-Maslin-Kammerdeiner, the shirt will cost more than the player. I was talking about this naming phenomenon with some friends and we decided to pick our top international hyphenated team. (Thank god pubs are
back, or important projects of this sort would never get done.) I have doubts about some of our choices, I must admit. Peacock-Farrell is only there because we couldn’t think of another double-barrelled goalkeeper and Dina-Ebimbe makes the team because the PSG man has the distinction of hyphenating both his first and second names. Still, it was fun. More exciting than some football matches. And here are the names of our First XI, or should that be First XXII Bailey Peacock-Farrell (Sheffield Wednesday), Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Eric-Junior Dina-Ebimbe (PSG), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (Man United), ) Ruben LoftusCheek (Chelsea), Emile Smith-Rowe (Arsenal), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Liverpool), Jose Carlod-Parrales
(Real Madrid), Callum Hudson-Odoi (Chelsea), Allan Saint-Maximin (Newcastle United) and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (Bayern Munich) .
In the days before footballers’ names took up so much space, the number on the back of a shirt told you the position he was playing: 2 for a right-back, 3 for a left-back, 4 for a righthalf and so on. Today the numbers are meaningless, but I can read the name of the player, probably the name of his father, possibly the name of his mother and definitely the name of the club’s sponsors. It’s a growing business. Schoolboy players used to taunt opponents with the jibe: “My granny could do better than that.” Soon they may be able to add: “That’s why her name’s on the back of my shirt.”

Feed the Birds
gig of the week
with Justin Ivory
the lost brothers Friday November 19th, St Patrick’s Gateway Centre, Waterford
Blue Tit on a peanut feeder (Photo Justin Ivory) With autumn rapidly drawing to a close, and the colder, shorter days of winter looming ever nearer, now is a good time to start feeding birds in your garden if you have not already being doing so. Although the weather has been unseasonably mild and warm to date, and there are still quite a few insects on the wing and wild fruits, nuts and berries to be found, these food sources will soon be running out. Also, the shorter days give less daylight hours for birds to look for food and in lower temperatures it takes more energy to search and find less readily available food sources. In wintertime every little bit of extra energy expenditure can ultimately spell doom for an individual bird. So that’s where we come in. Putting out food for birds gives them an easy and reliable source of food. It can literally mean the difference between life and death for them. While birds obviously benefit from supplementary feeding in winter, food shortages can occur at any time of year. Feeding all year round gives birds a better chance of surviving food shortages whenever they may occur. So, what foods should you feed birds? Below is a list of the best options: Nyjer Seed – tiny black seeds which need a special feeder, they have a high oil content and are rich in fat. Sunflower Hearts – the most popular food in my garden, I literally can’t keep the feeders topped up with the stuff. Peanuts – the traditional favourite but make sure to get from a reliable source as they can contain a natural toxin, aflatoxin, which can kill birds. As well as they above, seed mixes, fatballs, mealworms and specialist mixes for Robins are all great choices. Remember to clean your feeders about every 2 weeks with warm soapy water to avoid the spread of disease.
‘THE Lost Brothers harmonies are to die for, as near as a duo have got to the mastery of The Everlys and The Louvin Brothers’ tender close harmony singing that I’ve heard anywhere near these shores.” How is that for praise from none other than the great Richard Hawley? And well deserved it is too. The duo return to Waterford on the back of their sixth album After The Fire After The Rain, produced in New York by Tony Garnier (Bob Dylan’s long time bassist) so expect tickets to go fast. YET another dead rubber in a line of dead rubbers but vitally important for the gaffer, Stephen Kenny, who really needs to win this to save his job. Judging by the sell-out crowd at the Aviva for the Portugal game, he certainly has won over the hearts and minds of the loyal Irish supporters, but it’s the head honchos at FAI HQ who will need to assess this — let’s not sugar coat it here — very poor campaign and weight it up carefully. Another defeat to the minnows, Luxembourg, will certainly leave many calling for his head but on recent form, that’s unlikely. C’mon ye boys in Green!
THIS incredible movie celebrates the life Fergus O’Farrell was the charismatic voice of Interference, one of the most compelling and influential bands to emerge from the Irish music scene in the 1980s and 90s. He died in 2016 aged 48, after decades in a wheelchair and although best known for his timeless song Gold, which featured in the soundtrack to Once, his reach went wider than that, touching many, including Glen Hansard. The film was 15 years in the making, a labour of love by director Michael McCormack.

Scoring was good too, with the greens recovering well after recent treatment for disease. Taking the day’s honours and of course the bragging rights, were the Wexford/ Kildare/Kilkenny combination of Michael Kavanagh (19), Andy Ronan (20), Michael Brennan (28) and Jamesie Murphy (29), with a cracking score of 108 points. There was a tie for second place two teams locked together on 106 points, but a better back nine gave that prize to John Aylward (20), Billy Redmond (23), Sean O Neill (29) and Jim Kehoe (29). Placed third were Jim “Ross” Ryan (21) Seamus Aylward (21), Donie Cody (27) and John Farrell (29) also with 106 points. Martin Murphy (17), Michael Gannon (23), Tony Wallace (26) and Fr Jim Curtis (29) scored 103 points to claim fourth prize.
