Council’s cash plea draws a ‘big fat No’ THE clock is ticking for Waterford City and County Council. The council faces suspension if it cannot bridge a €1.3million gap in its budget by Thursday, December 12. A plea for the Government to cough up the finance has fallen on deaf ears. Councillors met with John Paul Phelan, TD who is Minister of State with responsibility for local government. One councillor described the minister’s response as “a big fat No”. The Government has already offered €2m to reduce the original deficit of €3.3m caused by a change in the way Irish Water pays rates. “As expected our demands for more Government grant allocation to make up the €1.3m shortfall in the 2020 council budget went unheeded and met with a bit fat No,” said Cllr Eddie Mulligan. The Fianna Fáil election candidate was critical of the

alliance of Sinn Féin, Greens, Labour and Independent members who control the council. “We had previously been advised in writing that there would be no further allocation but the Sinn Féin-led pact used it as an excuse to turn up at last Friday’s budget meeting with their arms swinging and using their majority votes to defer the budget meeting, without even debate on possible solutions,” he said. Another Fianna Fáil councillor warned that the council might decide to slash funding for major festivals to fill the budget gap. Councillor Eamon Quinlan was particularly critical of Sinn Féin, the largest party in the ruling group. He said Sinn Féin councillors had backed themselves into a corner by rejecting a propsoal for a five per cent increase in commercial >>Turn to page 4

Farm feed firm wins €135m US contract Sleeping out for homeless
FIFTY people took to the streets, braving the cold to take part in the Big Déise Sleep Out. They raised funds to support the work of Focus Ireland, helping the homeless here in Waterford. Focus Ireland has provided homeless services in Waterford for the last 19 years and the city is now the charity’s largest centre outside Dublin. More than 300 people ac-
cess its Waterford services every month. In the last year Focus Ireland has helped 491 households in Waterford who were homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. A Focus spokesperson said the Big Deise Sleep Out was an opportunity for the Waterford community to show its solidarity with families and children who face homelessness this Christmas. “Sadly, many parents in Waterford and around
Ireland will have to explain that although they no longer live in their home Santa Claus will still know how to find them this Christmas,” he said. “These families live under terrible stress and children suffer the most.” Picture: Taking part in the Big Sleep Out at the Edmund Rice Centre were Ciara Costelloe, Joanne Whelan, Niamh Rooney and Kandja Kaba. Tramore’s train makes Christmas comeback
ALMOST 60 years after the last passenger train clicked and clacked its way from Tramore to the city a locomotive is back under one of the last remaining bridges on the old line. The red and black Santa Express, designed and built by John Hayes and Tony Doyle of Special Branch Carvings, is standing as the centre piece of the Christmas lighting installation at the entrance to the town. The lights were switched on by Anne Cheasty, chairperson of Tramore Tidy Towns . The switching-on capped a hugely successful year for Tramore Tidy Towns volunteers. Tramore secured its sixth bronze medal in the National SuperValu Tidy Towns Competition. Anne Cheasty was honoured at the PPN Community and Voluntary Awards and eight year old, Thomas Butler was a runner up in the national Clean Coast Youth Hero Awards.
A LOCAL company has clinched a major contract in the US. Specialist Nutrition has secured a five-year deal worth €135m to supply by-products from a US ethanol plant as sustainable feed to farmers in New York. Specialist Nutrition is part of the Arvum Group and a leading international expert in turning co-products produced by the distilling, brewing and biofuel industries into sustainable animal feed. The deal with Attis Industries sees the Waterford company establish a US base in Syracuse, New York, to market and distribute 500,000 tonnes of feed annually into the state’s dairy farming sector from a nearby corn ethanol plant in Fulton. Attis sees the agreement to market the wet cake and syrup co-product streams into speciality feed applications as the first step in transforming the Fulton facility into the world’s premier GreenTech campus. Tracing its origins back to 1859, the Arvum Group comprises a number of agri businesses, renowned for innovation in seed and animal feed. Its co-product business, de-
veloped through working with some of the industry’s biggest names, is highly sustainable for manufacturers as it removes the costly drying at the end of the distilling process and reduces the carbon footprint. “Our expansion into the US market has been achieved following two decades of strong collaboration with international food and beverage companies in Europe,” said Arvum Group CEO Roy Power. “Our team have spent a year working with the team at Attis, stepping them through our process to the point where they are confident in signing a five-year deal that changes the sustainable nature of their business. “We will be providing a consistent supply of locally-produced animal feed to New York state farmers and the plant will be lowering its carbon footprint and increasing efficiencies.” Attis Industries say that the new product offering significantly improves efficiency while reducing the processing time of distillers’ grains, saving over €2.3 million in annual natural gas costs. It also lowers the facility’s carbon footprint and increases operational performance by three to five days.
Council’s plea for cash gets ‘big fat No’ From front page rates while also rejecting cuts in services. “Over the last five years, SF on the council have proposed and voted to cut the Festivals and Events budget several years in a row,” he said. “This is now worrying to the many local volunteer groups who hold festivals from Tallow to Dunmore East and have made Waterford a signature destination for strong event brands with national reach.” “Sinn Fein have been enemies of the festivals and have voted accordingly many times,” said Cllr Quinlan. People Before Profit supported the stance of the ruling alliance and condemned “the contemptuous manner” in which councillors were dismissed by Mr Phelan.
“The definitive ‘No’ was particularly ironic in a week when the FG/FF confidence and supply government, including John Paul Phelan, alongside our own John Halligan, voted to give €84m to Horse Racing Ireland and the Greyhound Racing Board,” the party said in a statement which also contrasted Waterford’s problems with the decision of Dublin Council “to spend €24m on an aquatic vanity project of ‘White Water Rafting’ for Dublin’s city centre ISFC tax haven.” The budget gap has been caused by a change in the way rates are paid on assets owned by Irish Water. They are no longer paid to the counties where properties are sited but divided among all local authorities in proportion to use, as is the way with other State utilities.

Cold snap pollution just ‘tip of the iceberg’
AIR pollution is reaching a dangerous level in Waterford, a councillor has claimed. Green councillor Marc Ó Cathasaigh said a combination of slack winds and cold air combined last week to trap
emissions from cars, chimneys and boilers. He said this caused readings for “particulate matter” at the Browne’s Road station to exceed 200 microgrammes per cubic metre, a level that can be
harmful to human health. “These measurements may only be the tip of the iceberg,” he warned. “It’s worth noting that the Browne’s Road station is at one of the highest points in the city. If air pollution readings are this high there, I dread to think what the air quality was like in Poleberry, for example. “We have a huge problem with air pollution in our cities in Ireland. “An EPA report issued in November estimated that our poor air quality can be directly linked to up to 1,500 premature deaths every year, and we know that particulate matter contributes to the incidence of asthma and COPD. It affects our most vulnerable most severely, with older people and children most likely to be affected.” Cllr Ó Cathasaigh said “the first step to tackling the problem is to understand the scale of the problem.” He called for monitoring stations across the city, and “especially in locations where our more susceptible citizens are exposed, outside our schools and hospitals, for example.”
Codeathon a runaway winner
YOU will have heard of a marathon, a triathlon and a decathlon. Now we have the codeathon. Thirteen WIT Computing lecturers held a one-day codeathon in Gaelscoil Phort Láirge primary school. The initiative consisted of a suite of lesson plans designed for children aged four to 12. The Junior and Senior Infants programmed
instructions to move their Bee Bot robots around a map. The 1st and 2nd classes used iPads to code their Sphero Mini robots to knock down skittles and dominoes. The 3rd and 4th classes also used iPads to programme their Sphero Minis, but this time they had to navigate around a maze. The 5th and 6th classes built a game using Scratch
block coding. “We were very excited to host WIT’s first ever codeathon,” said Kate Warren, vice principal of the Gaelscoil. “The children were really looking forward to it as they love coding activities of any sort.” Picture: Twins Cian and Cormac from the Junior Infant class working in a team effort. he landscape for public and private markets has changed substantially over the past 10 years, with a marked shift in capital allocation to the private arena. This evolution is being driven by regulations, new technology and the availability of financing alternatives. Other key drivers are the accommodative monetary policies following the financial crisis in 2007-2008 and more recently, the inflow of significant investment capital from sovereign wealth funds. US listed markets have seen multiple waves of structural change over the last decade with increased application of index trading, exchange traded funds [ETFs], high-frequency trading and factor investing. Mergers and Acquisitions [M & A] have soared while US initial public offerings [IPOs] have fallen by 75% resulting in a reducing replenishment of listed companies. In fact, the number of US listed companies has fallen by 40% from 7,000 in 1996 to just over 4,000 in 2018. The increasing regulatory and compliance burdens cou-
younger and more dynamic; growing strongly in terms of product innovation, sales, employment and profitability. From 1998 to 2017, employment in US private companies grew by 60% whereas all other US companies increased jobs by 24%. Future access to public markets may be mainly by indextracking funds. Active managers are switching their attention to private companies in which to use their research and stock-picking expertise to identify future growth opportunities. Private companies are likely to continue to offer above average growth opportunities but despite the growth of secondary markets, private markets remain largely illiquid. Public market only investors are likely to be unable to participate in the rapid growth and high equity appreciation phase of companies and we are likely to see secondary markets being used as a bona fide portfolio management tool.

TD urges tough new curb on people smuggling A TD has called for stronger measures to prevent people being smuggled into the country. Mary Butler, Fianna Fáil TD for Waterford, made the call after eight men were discovered on a ship which came into Belview Port from France. The men, reported to be from Albania, have since been deported. “Thankfully all of the men appear to be in good health,” said Ms Butler. “But the reality of the situation is that we have seen a number of high-profile deaths in England this year, as people place themselves at risk by travelling in the back of container ships.” “While I appreciate that larger ports like Rosslare and Dublin command the bulk of resources, I believe (the Belview) discovery highlights the need for measures to be extended to smaller ports like Waterford,” she said. “The Port of Waterford is a huge strategic asset in the South
East and is a substantial driver of the local economy. “The majority of trade is with mainland Europe and. with Brexit still on the horizon, I believe that its more essential than ever to ensure that measures are in place to protect against people smuggling and trafficking.” The men were discovered by the crew of a cargo ship that was travelling from St Nazaire in France to Belview Port. Three men fled the ship after being discovered, but were apprehended by gardaí a short time later. A garda spokesperson said the eight migrants, were found to be in good health. After the men were medically examined they were interviewed with the assistance of an interpreter to try and establish their exact movements prior to boarding the ship. They were deported under Garda escort on a ferry from Rosslare.
Court gives Ballyduff windfarm a week to trim its sails
A WIND farm has been given until next Monday to comply with EU regulations. The windfarm at Ballyduff has been constructed with turbines that are higher than stated in the planning permission and stipulated by EU law. The developer for Barranafaddock Sustainability Electricity said the deviation of the rotor height from 90 metres to 103m was immaterial in terms of the planning permission. The matter was referred by Waterford Council to An Bord Pleanála which refused to allow the modifications. The developer challenged the decision in the High Court where, separately, seven local residents had sought a planning injunction in relation to the turbines. Mr Justice Garrett Simons said he wished to give Barranafaddock Sustainability Electricity an opportunity to regularise the planning status of the turbines so that they comply with EU law.

When ‘non medicine’ is the best medicine A SCHEME which allows doctors to refer patients for non-medical assistance is to be expanded. Social Prescribing increases the range of options available to health professionals. They can refer patients to a social prescribing co-ordinator who, in turn, can connect them with activities which range from cookery classes to fitness training and debt relief. Precriptions in Waterford have included linking with a self-esteem course, a youth arts group, a men’s cookery group, and Pieta House. Patients have also been referred to the Sports Partnership, dog handling training, the Solas Cancer Support Centre, dance classes, yoga, a women’s group and to the National Learning Network. The conference of the AllIreland Network of Social Prescribing was held in Waterford last week. It heard that the scheme is to be expanded in Waterford and may be extended to Carlow, Kilkenny, South Tipperary and Wexford.

The kindest cut - beard shave raises festive funds
ONLY Santa’s beard is safe when festive fund-raising gets going. It was a close shave for solicitor John O’Donohoe but he managed to get his beard trimmed in time for Christmas. The sponsored shave has raised funds for the Lions Club Christmas Hamper Appeal. The razor was in the steady
hands of Richard Hannigan of Richard Hannigan Hair Design, who hosted the event. The Christmas Hamper Appeal is the biggest fundraiser for the Waterford Lions Club and all the money received is spent on providing food for the hampers. This year 1,230 homes in the City and surrounding areas are to be the recipients
of hampers distributed by the St. Vincent de Paul. Among the fund raising events is the Christmas concert at 4pm on Saturday December 14 in the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, Barronstrand Street. Picture: John O’Donohoe and Richard Hannigan at the sponsored shave. Photo: John Power
the irishman It is rare that a movie happens along that from the very first moment that you begin to watch you know without a shadow of a doubt that it is going to a masterpiece. Martin Scorsese is the sort of director that takes his time in getting his films right. The script, the casting, every little detail of what is going to end up on the screen is thought through and nothing is left to chance. He is also one of the few directors with enough clout to get his own way when it comes to dealing with studios, or in this case Netflix, and you feel that there are very few compromises that he has had to make. Even the length of the The Irishman tells you that. It’s over 3 hours long. There are other movies that clock in at over the 2 hour mark and for much of that time you feel that things are just being strung out and the film could do with some serious editing. Not with this film though. It is the sort of movie that gets you from the first moment and never lets go. The story itself is about what happen to Teamster Union boss Jimmy Hoffa. Long a punchline for American comics Jimmy Hoffa was immensely powerful in mid 20th Century America. His connections to the mob were no secret and the FBI tried to get him on many occasions - he was eventually sent to jail for 5 years for fraud. However it was his mob connections that in the end proved to be the most difficult problem he would face. The issue was that the Teamsters Union had a huge pension pot and was on the whole a very wealthy organisation. Through Hoffa the mob had some access to that money. When he went away they found that they had even more access to the Union money. When Hoffa came out of jail and started campaigning to be reinstated as the boss of the union he came into conflict with the mob who understood that he would put a stop to the gravy train. The main actors in this movie are all legends in their own right. Al Pacino plays Hoffa, Robert De Niro plays Frank Sheeran, the eponymous Irishman who is the liasion between the mob and Hoffa while Joe Pesci plays the main mob figure. All of the other actors are quality roles as well, even the cameo roles are played by outstanding actors. In the end Hoffa doesn’t heed the warnings to back off and it is The Irishman, his friend, who is told to kill him and dispose of the body. A long and involved movie, nevertheless the time flies and undoubtedly one of the movies of the year.

Worst time of year for abuse in the home
CHRISTMAS is a time of joy for most people, but it’s the most terrifying time of the year for people who are trapped in abusive and violent relationships, an event held in Waterford has heard. Almost 100 people attended ‘Learning from the Legacy of Loss’, which took place at Carrickphierish Library as part of the international campaign ‘16 Days of Action Opposing Violence Against Women’. Guest speakers at the event, which was organised by the Waterford Local Area Network Opposing Violence Against Women, included Priscilla Grainger, the founder of the Stop Domestic Violence in Ireland (SDVI) group which is campaigning for domestic violence to be made a criminal offence.
In a moving account of her own personal story, Priscilla told how she thought she was in a perfectly normal and happy relationship “with the man I loved” ... until he beat her senseless on the second night of their honeymoon. She suffered horrific physical, emotional and financial abuse for more than a decade. The beatings even continued when she was pregnant. Priscilla said Christmas is the “worst time of year” for victims of domestic violence, and SDVII has reported a surge in calls over the past fortnight from desperate women and men seeking their help. “Christmas brings it all back. I remember it was like waiting for a grenade to go off every year. They’d [abusers] rob, they’d steal, they’d take Santa’s
bits and pieces, whatever they need.” For more information, or if you are affected by domestic violence or abuse, you can contact: Oasis House Women’s Refuge: 051 370367 Lo Call Number: 1890 264 364 Waterford Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre 051 873 362 24-Hour Freephone Helpline: 1800 296 296 Waterford Women’s Centre 051 35 1918 The Samaritans 24-Hour Helpline – 1850 60 90 90 Stop Domestic Violence in Ireland (SDVII): Founder Priscilla Grainger Phone: 086 869 7022 or 087 212 4896

Our View
hat quote from Joseph de Maistre, a 19th Century French Philosopher, is often referenced but no where does it seem more apt that when viewed in relation to what is going on in Britain at the moment. Tomorrow (Thursday), Britain will be going to the polls to elect it’s next Government and at the moment it doesn’t look particularly certain who will be entering 10 Downing Street. And certainty is the one thing that the British public seems to crave at the moment more than anything else. Since the Referendum where they elected to leave the EU Britain has torn itself apart over how they are actually going to achieve this. They have lost two Prime Ministers and an incalculable number of Ministers over Brexit and still they don’t appear to be any closer to getting what they want and what the British electorate voted for. It is not only the Government that has torn itself apart with vicious infighting but the main opposition party Labour has also followed suit. Instead of offering a coherent alternative to the Conservative party they have given nothing more concrete than vague platitudes about how they would handle the situation in a better manner. Pressed on the particulars they retreat into obfuscation and never offer a real, viable alternative. It seems that with this election there will be more than one party political leader with their neck on the line. At this moment in time it does seem that the Conservatives will win, but will they win an overall majority or will the election be for naught with everyone arriving back at the same point where they started? If there were little at stake for us here in Ireland then it would be an interesting spectacle. However with Britain as our main trading partner everything that goes on in that country, (especially something as big as Brexit), has profound consequences for us here, particularly given that it looks increasingly likely that we will have our own general election sometime in the near future. What is clear is that Britain has sown the wind and is now reaping the whirlwind. With a toxic mix of jingoism, hubris and misplaced nationalistic zeal they are getting what they deserve. It is a hard lesson to learn but we all get the Government we deserve no matter the country we live in. After all they only govern by our mandate.

Move over Tweedledum, it’s Tweedledee’s turn
W
e don’t have a Conservative Party in Ireland. We don’t need one - all of our major parties and most of our politicians are inherently conservative. And we seem to like it that way, for we keep electing them. Sometimes we give the big job to Tweedledum and sometimes to Tweedledee. Either way we can relax; in stormy waters this pair won’t rock the boat. Whether it was rocked or not, Good Ship Ireland almost sank back in 2008 when recession put a hole in the economy. The austerity measures that followed were hugely unpopular and for a time it looked as if the country might be prepared to abandon its traditional voting patterns. But we didn’t, not quite, and last week’s by-elections suggest that we have since resiled from any such intention and are returning to the status quo. That status quo was set in back in 1948 after a string of Fianna Fáil election successes threatened to turn our recently independent country into a one-
party state. Such an outcome was prevented by a coalition - a collision, as the bar-stool comedians had it - of Fine Gael and Labour. It was an unlikely pairing, since they had almost no policies in common and shared very few with Clann na Poblachta and the scattering of independents who helped them form the Government. Nevertheless, it worked well enough and set a pattern that lasted for the next 30 years or so. You could have Fianna Fáil in government by itself or a coalition of Fine Gael and Labour, sometimes helped by a third party or independents. Charles Haughey altered the equation when he took Fianna Fáil into coalition with the Progressive Democrats in 1989. But the basic formula remained the same until the election of 2011, which was dominated by recession and smashed Fianna Fáil, and the election of 2016, which was dominated by austerity and almost wiped out the Labour Party. These elections also saw the rise of Sinn Féin and some small parties on the Left. They
changed the Dáil arithmetic and, for a time, it looked as if next year’s general election would finally put an end to the 1948 status quo. It seemed distinctly possible that Micheál Martin would be the first Fianna Fáil leader not to become Taoiseach and that his party might be pushed towards coalition and eventual amalgamation with Fine Gael. For Labour, with only seven TDs, there was the grim possibility that further slippage could leave it a party in name only, a flag of convenience for two or three independents. Neither Fianna Fáil nor Labour can relax just yet but the trends of the past year and the results of the by-elections would suggest that both parties will survive. Fianna Fáil will never return to the glory days when it could provide one-party government, but it remains strong enough to be a major force and comfortably ahead of Sinn Féin. Labour, which had already seen a revival at local government level, looks likely to return enough TDs to at least be a player in any government formation. So what has changed since
1948? There is no single dominant party. Sinn Féin, which is now prepared to go into coalition, will take on the role then held by Labour and Labour will play the part of the traditional fourth party, held by the likes of Clann na Poblachta, Clann na Talmhan and Democratic Left. The next government will, of course, bring a fresh approach to specific issues such as housing and transport but there will be no radical shift. That’s how the voters like it. And they are right. Look at the shambles of British politics, the instability in Spain and Italy, the rise of the Right in Hungary and Poland, and you can only conclude that our dull old parties, governed by pragmatism not ideology, have served us well. I hesitate to predict the outcome of a general election on the basis of four by-elections with very low turnouts, but I do think Fianna Fáil will be the biggest party next time out. It’s not that their policies are wonderful, just that their time has come. Move over Tweedledum, it’s Tweedledee’s turn now. - Michael Wolsey

Mamma Mia!
book of the week
with Justin Ivory
It’s December and officially winter and with it comes an influx of visitors from Scandinavia. Sporting spiky hairdos, heavy eye-makeup and some flashy outer-ware between them, these tourists could well be a raggle-taggle bunch of punks, goths and new romantics! So, who are they and why are they here? They are wild foragers and they are here to feast on our food. In this case they are wild foragers of the feathered and non-humankind, so have a perfect right to stuff themselves on mother nature’s larder. This mobile marauding club consists of a trio of members – Fieldfare, Redwing and Waxwing.

THE BODY
The Funeral Director Wednesday 11 December 9.35pm RTE 1
knives out Released 5 December 2019
Full of extraordinary facts and astonishing stories The Body: A Guide for Occupants is a brilliant, often very funny attempt to understand the miracle of our physical and neurological make up. A wonderful successor to A Short History of Nearly Everything , this new book is an instant classic. It will have you marvelling at the form you occupy, and celebrating the genius of your existence, time and time again. ‘What I learned is that we are infinitely more complex and wondrous, and often more mysterious, than I had ever suspected. There really is no story more amazing than the story of us.’
Documentary offering a glimpse into the world of funeral directors, told from the perspective of pioneering Sligo funeral director, David McGowan. The programme follows David as he shares his personal perspective on the sombre business, and recalls some of the most difficult situations he has faced in this career. A uniquely insightful and sensitive portrayal of the work of the person responsible for the last ritual any of us will undergo – preparation for burial or cremation.
A fun, modern-day murder mystery where everyone is a suspect. When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday, the inquisitive and debonair Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is mysteriously enlisted to investigate. From Harlan’s dysfunctional family to his devoted staff, Blanc sifts through a web of red herrings and self-serving lies to uncover the truth behind Harlan’s untimely death. With an allstar ensemble cast KNIVES OUT is a witty and stylish whodunit guaranteed to keep audiences guessing until the very end.

Waxwing (Photo Justin Ivory) Last, but not least, is the Waxwing (Bombycilla garrulous) who get their name from the bright red tips on some of their secondary feathers that is reminiscent of wax seals used on letters in bygone times. They have a fondness for red berries, particularly those of the Rowan tree, quite a few of which can be found in urban and suburban areas.

Fieldfare (Photo Justin Ivory) The Fieldfare (Turdus pilaris) is a large, colourful thrush, like our Mistle Thrush in size, shape and behavior. They particularly like to feed on Hawthorn berries.
Redwing (Photo Andreas Trepte www.phot-natur.net) The Redwing (Turdus iliacus) is also a member of the thrush family. Smaller than our Song Thrush, they have a very distinctive creamy stripe above the eye (supercilium) and orange-red flank/underwing markings. They roam across the countryside feeding in fields and hedgerows and only venture into gardens in the coldest of weather.

The male MEN-opause
T
he menopause is a natural part of the female aging process, with the ending of menstrual cycles, typically when women reach their 40’s or 50’s. Symptoms from the hormonal changes associated with the menopause include hot flushes, irritability, depression, fatigue, insomnia and so on. The menopause is not an illness as such - it is simply a natural part of a woman growing old but there are various traditional and complementary treatments (eg hormone replacement therapies and homeopathy) that can be used to help and support women through this stage of their lives. So … women have the menopause, but is there such a thing as the “men-opause?” Some people might simply define the “men-opause” as a male midlife crisis (!), but there is now a school of thought that believes that there might be some truth in the idea. What is certain is that as men
breda gardner Natural Healing
grow older, their testosterone levels decline (although this drop is not as drastic as the major hormonal changes that take place with the menopause). Men in their fifties may also find that their body loses elasticity, with stiffness in the joints. If they don’t keep exercising, muscle tone and mass may fall, allowing arthritis to set in. Some men experience a midlife identity crisis, causing moods swings, anger, irritability, poor sleep patterns, obsession with their appearance, fatigue,
low sex drive and uncertainty about the future, especially leading up to or after retirement. In many respects, those symptoms are the same as for the female menopause. And in many respects, my advice for men who think they are going through the “men-opause” is largely the same as for women:
• • • • • •
Exercise: move the body. 30 to 60 minutes walking in nature every day works wonders (I recommend you get a dog or two!) Eat a well-balanced, healthy diet containing proteins, fats and carbs, and cut out the sugar. Remember that your dietary needs change as you grow older. What used to be good for you in your youth may not serve you now. Drink two litres of water every day. Get some sunshine or take a vitamin D supplement to aid bone strength and calcium absorption. Get plenty of restful sleep. Minimise stress by talking
time out daily for yoga or meditation. • Enjoy life, stop worrying, and don’t take things too seriously. Is the male menopause real? For me and many medical professionals, the jury is still out for a formal diagnosis for the condition. In our modern day society, we have done a good job in promoting and educating people about women’s health issues, but men’s health sometimes has been pushed to the bottom of the pile. This is exacerbated by the fact that men often shy away from working on themselves and plough on regardless, so anything that makes men think more about their health is a welcome change.

Qween ended 2018 with a sold out tour of the country’s best venues including a brilliant debut at Project in Waterford just before Christmas. in it’s near 20 year history, with a full house singing the words of all the band’s classic hits Qween return to Project on the same night this year, Friday 20 December, after even more success in 2019 with a host of major festival appearances and sell-out shows at bigger venues all over the country. So join us for the perfect Christmas night out, with a 2 hour Greatest Hits live set followed by a ‘Muldoons style’ 80s disco with DJ Bernie. Advance tickets are on sale now at www.projectwaterford.com.
Wild Youth Project Debut!
It’s been a busy summer for Wild Youth, which included two sold-out shows in Croke Park supporting Westlife, performing at the sold-out Longitude and Indiependence Festivals and a main stage slot at Electric Picnic! Continuing on from the massive success of their EP ‘The Last Goodbye, which debuted at #5
in the Irish Albums Charts, the Dublin pop-rock superstars went on to sell-out their first ever headline show in The Olympia Theatre in March, support The Script in London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall and perform to a packed-out house in London’s OMEARA, run by Mumford & Sons member Ben Lovett.
In addition to a string of live shows, their outrageously catchy song ‘Can’t Move On’ has earned them over 2 million streams and was the most played Irish song on Irish radio in 2018. They make their much anticipated Waterford debut on Saturday, 14 December, with advance tickets available at Projectwaterford.com

Simon’s Christmas, the rose and the Furey
An accidental meeting at the Rose of Tralee Festival in 1978, led to the writing of Waterford’s most popular Christmas song, called SIMON’s Christmas. Waterford Band SIMON were performing at the Rose of Tralee Cabaret Festival. While there, they became firm friends with
the Furey Brothers and Davy Arthur, they actually played at the wedding of the late Paul Furey. Finbar Furey told the band that he had an idea for a song and gave what he had written to the band. The band then completed the song. It was recorded at Wind-
mill Lane Studios in Dublin and released in 1978. At that time Simon was the most popular band in the South East, packing out venues. Forty one years later, they have reformed and have sold out their first six venues. They decided to release a newly recorded
version of the song, “Simon’s Christmas”, with the local High Hopes Choir. It is hoped it will raise money for local charity SOLAS. Produced by local musician Sean Kinsella, its available only at Rainbow Records, Michael St. The cost is €5.

Birthday Remembrance Kathleen Kelly
Mam and Dad, There is a bridge of memories, From here to heaven above, It keeps us very close to ye, Its called the bridge of love, No one knows the heartache, Of what your parting cost, But God in all his glory, Has gained what we have lost, We often lay awake at night, When the world is fast asleep, We think about the parents we lost, With tears upon our cheeks, We cannot get over losing you, No matter how we try, We will always love and remember you both, Until the day we die, Love them Lord as we do, Don’t let them see us cry, For the years we spent together, No millionaire could buy, Father in heaven hear our prayer, Look after our parents with loving care, A prayer each night, Keeps us in touch, With our parents we loved and miss so much, Too dearly loved to ever be forgotten. -From your loving sons, daughters, sons in law & daughters in law. Nanny & Grandad, Happy memories keep forever, Of days when we were all together, Each of us in our own way, Have special thoughts of you both today. -Loved forever, from your grandchildren & great grandchildren. Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Take it Dear Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart, where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail.O.K.

The day you left us mother, Our hearts just broke in two, The smallest part is still with us, And the biggest part with you. For the rest of our lives We will miss you mother, Our secret tears still flow, Oh, how we really loved you, No one will ever know. We miss your smile, your joking ways, We miss the things you used to say, And when old times we do recall, It’s then we miss you most of all. You were always there when we needed you, No task too great or small, With loving heart & willing hands, For us you did it all. Look around your garden Lord,
12th Anniversary STEPHEN CARBERRY
They say there is a reason, They say that time will heal But neither time nor reason Will change the way we feel. For no-one knows the heartache That lies beneath our smiles, No-one knows how many times We have broken down & cried. Gone from home that smiling face, Those cheerful, happy ways, The heart that won so many friends, In bygone, happy days. We want to tell you something, So there won’t be any doubt, You’re so wonderful to think of But so hard to be without. - Always remembered & sadly missed by your son Paul, Sharon & Shannon. Do not stand at my grave & weep, I am not there, I do not sleep, I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow, I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain, When you awaken in the morning’s hush, I am the swift uplifting rush, Of quiet birds in circled flight, I am the soft stars that shine at night, Do not stand at my grave & cry, I am not there, I did not die. - Always remembered and sadly missed by your daughter Angela

In loving memory of John Power, late of Priory Lawn, Ballybeg, whose anniversary occurs on 18th December. Time slips by but still you stay, As near and dear as yesterday, No longer in our lives to share, But in our hearts you are always there, Memories are something no one can steal, Death is a heartache no one can heal, Some will forget you now you are gone, But we will remember you no matter how long. - Missed every single day, Mam and Dad I often lie awake at night, When the world is fast asleep I think about the brother I lost, With the tears upon my cheek, I cannot get over losing you, No matter how I try, I will always love & remember you, Until the day I die, - Love always Ray, Maria, Kirsty and Grace, Imagine if I was given one moment, Just a single slice of my past. I could hold it close forever, And that moment would always last. I’d put the moment in a safe, Within my heart’s abode. I could open it when I wanted, And only I would know the code. I could choose a time of laughing, A time of happiness and fun. I could choose a time that tried me Through everything I’ve done. I sat and thought about what moment Would always make me smile. One that would always push me To walk that extra mile. If I’m feeling sad and low, If I’m struggling with what to do, I can go and open my little safe And watch my moment through. There are moments I can think of That would lift my spirits every time. The moments when you picked me up, When the road was hard to climb. For me to only pick one moment To cherish, save and keep Is proving really difficult, As I’ve gathered up a heap! I’ve dug deep inside my heart, Found the safe and looked inside There was room for lots of moments; In fact, hundreds if I tried. I’m building my own little library, Embedded in my heart, For all the moments spent with you Before you had to part. I can open it up whenever I like, Pick a moment and watch it through, My little library acts as a promise I’ll never ever forget you. -Sadly missed, Mark, Edel, Jessica, Holly & Millie. In memory of a special brother, So full of loving deeds, Who always thought of others first, And helped fulfill their needs, Someone who loved to bring a smile, As he never failed to brighten up, A dark and gloomy day, Someone who’ll never know how much, He’s missed and thought about, For when he left, it seemed as if the stars had all gone out, You mean so very much, In every single way, And you’re remembered with much love, Today and every day. - missed so much, Lisa, John, Katie and Darragh.

In Loving Memory Unseen and unheard but always near, So loved, so missed, so very dear
6th Anniversary FRANK McCArthy
In loving memory of Frank McCarthy, late of Larchville, whose 6th Anniversary occurs on the 15th December. Mass will be held in St. Pauls Church on Sunday 15th Dec at 11:30am. A smile for all, a heart of gold, One of the best the world could hold, Never selfish, always kind, These are the memories you left behind, To hear your voice, to see you smile, To sit and talk with you a while, To be together in the same old way, Would be our dearest wish to day, Though absent, you are always near, Still loved, still missed, still very dear. - From your wife Bridie and daughter Emer No longer in our lives to share, But in our hearts you are always there, A silent thought, A quiet prayer, For a special father, In God’s care, Quietly with love your memory we treasure, Missing you always, forgetting you never. - Your loving daughter Mary, son in law, Alex and grand daughters Jane, Lorna and Evelyn. Our lives go on without you Dad, But things are not the same, It’s hard to hide the heartache, When someone speaks your name, If memories keep us together, Then we are never far apart, For you are always in our minds, And forever in our hearts. - From your son Tony, and grandson Luke. Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us every day Unseen, unheard but always near, Still loved, still missed but very dear. If memories bring us closer, Then we are never far apart, God has you in his keeping, We have you in our hearts. - From son Robbie, Linda and grandson Reece.
Please Note: The deadline for inclusion in the Memoriam Pages is: 4pm on the Friday prior to publication.

With eight teams to qualify for the match-play stages and only 9 points separating the bottom four teams, the scene is set for a battle royale in the quest for qualifying places. Despite the mixed weather conditions players have turned up in number right through the week with the 13 hole format being very well received. The league will take a short break over the Christmas period and will resume with round 2 on Friday 27th December. This round will also be played over 13 holes. Whereas the alphabetical listing of teams has simplified the task for players wishing to know their teams we will be adding area names shortly. If you would like to act as team captain and choose your own team name, please contact Pat Power or Jimmy Murphy. There has been great competition for the weekly prizes and the category system has led to an even distribution of prizes. Of course the domestic handicap system also helps towards an even spread of prizewinners. Players are reminded that the domestic handicap system applies only to the weekly compettion. So thank you to everyone who has supported our winter league. A special word of thanks to Malcolm who keeps the entry fees in order and also to Pat and Tony for their help in sorting the cards each week. Wildcats get back to winning ways
Waterford Wildcats were quick to pick themselves up after their Cup exit last week and focus on the main event the Super League with a majestic victory over Cork City side Brunell at the Mercy Sports Hall on Saturday last. All previous encounters between these teams have been hard fought with very little between the sides. This was quite the opposite with Wildcats playing some delightful basketball that saw them win all four quarters and inevitably the game on a scoreline of 96 points to 66. Wildcats were tenacious in defence forcing the visitors into making rash decisions which produced little reward on the score board. On the other hand Wildcats were making the most of their chances with many high quality baskets that brought a rousing response from the faithful home support. Co-captains Steph O’ Shea and Jazz Walker were involved in making or creating most of their 31 points in the first quarter. More scores from young guns Abby Flynn and Debbie Ogayemi put distance between the sides with Wildcats having a 50-28 advantage at the half way stage. As the game progressed Sinead Deegan got in on the scoring act with some blistering

three pointers that saw her finish the game on a 17 point total which was matched by her team mate Jazz Walker. By the three quarter way stage Wildcats led 75-48. Brunell to their credit battled on and got some reward for their effort. None more than from their Lithuanian import Greta Tamasanskaite who finished as the
games top scorer with 21 points which included 6 three pointers. But Wildcats will be most pleased that no less than 6 of their players had 10 points or more. This crucial victory has moved them up to third in the Super League with one more game before Christmas. That game takes place this Thursday night against Carlow
IT who have been performing well with former Wildcat American Alyssa Velles in their line up. She is their top scorer for the season and hit a hot 27 points v Galway side Maree BC on Saturday last. Please note the game is on Thursday night Dec 12th at the Mercy Sports Hall with a 7-15 pm tip off .

St Marys had the elements to face in the second half but they got the perfect start when Kevin Sheehan landed a point to see them ahead for the first time. However Josh Beausang continued to hit the target for Russell Rovers and he had his team three ahead 1-9/0-9 shortly after the three quarter hour mark. St Mary’s had a huge opportunity to goal as the clock hit the fifty minute mark but some superb goalkeeping kept the Cork net intact. Russell Rovers were a relieved team and when Brian Hartnett goaled a few min-
utes later the Waterford chance was more or less gone. The East Cork side eventually ran out 2-13 to 0-11 winners with Josh Beausang (1-8) and Brian Hartnett (11) their big match winners. They now go on to face Miceal Breathnachs of Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final. St Mary’s can certainly take great pride in a terrific year. Their first objective of winning the domestic Junior Championship achieved and they must gain considerable confidence from the Munster exploits. They will surely be another competitive name in the Intermediate “hat” for the 2020 season. On the day Eoin Kearns (0-7) was their scoring talisman with Dermot Tobin, Sean

The scoreline finished WIT Vikings 78 LYIT Donegal 61 Having given up close to 90 points a game in their previous outings the main objective for the WIT Vikings team in this game was to make a big improvement in their team defence. LYIT Donegal areriding high in the league at present and with an average scoring rate of over 90 points a game it was a big task for the Vikings to hold them below that. Vikings had the better of the opening minutes with baskets from Sheehan, O’Neill and Grassey putting them into an early lead. LYIT came back strong big man Uhl making three baskets and a three pointer to level the score. Nothing in it for the remainder of the quarter and the teams went in level at 19 each. WIT Vikings stepped it up in the second quarter starting with a three from Jay Kavanagh. Shortly after he added another. The defensive effort from the WIT Vikings was huge. American Payton and Spanish guard Garcia getting little change from the defensive team effort the home side were putting in. Again it was Sheehan getting to the basket for a couple of scores and when Kavanagh hit his third three of the
quarter the Vikings went in 41 to 34 ahead at half time. The third period has often proved the undoing of this team in the past and the focus of the half time talk was to get through the first five minutes without letting the visitors get control of the game. Again it was the defensive effort from the Vikings that made the difference they gave up just 8 points from play and 6 from the free throw line in the quarter while managing 16 themselves mainly through O’Neill and Sheehan. A 57 points to 48 lead going into the final quarter. As expected a big push by LYIT at the start of the fourth to get back in the game and get the home side rattled but a three pointer from Pepper and another from Murphy just when they weremost needed settled the Vikings and they never really looked back after that. Some excellent controlled basketball found Sheehan open time and again and the big man obliged with four baskets in a row, Jay Kavanagh added two more and pushed the gap out to 17 and that was it. A much needed win for the WIT Vikings. WIT Vikings Team and Scoers: Kavanagh Dale, O’Neill (15) Kavanagh Jay (15), Pepper (5), O’Rorke, Grassey (9) Robinson, Sheehan (26), Murphy (8), Kudrovs (2). This weekend WIT Vikings are on the road with a long trip to Sligo to take on the All Stars, tip off in Sligo is 7.30 PM. on Saturday.
