We are Ireland’s only clean city Waterford emerged as Ireland’s only clean city, classed as ‘Clean to European Norms’, in the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) Anti Litter League table for 2021. The report said Waterford City topped the list by a “long shot”, adding “what is so striking about the top performing sites is not just the lack of litter but the overall presentation and maintenance of same.” Areas such as Plunkett Train Station, People’s Park, Medieval Triangle / Cultural Quarter, Bus Eireann Station (The Quays) and the grounds of Waterford Courthouse, were regarded as excellent sites, were well maintained and a complete absence of litter was noted throughout. The car park opposite People’s Park had been a heavily littered site over several previous IBAL surveys, however, it was observed that a substantial clean-up had taken place. Other sites which performed very well included

the “beautifully paved / pedestrianised” Michael Street, the Tramore approach road, and Kilbarry Nature Park which provided “dedicated novel bins for plastic bottles, a poop and scoop facility” with a virtual absence of litter along the 2km pathway — however litter and dog fouling was noted in the viewing area which brought the Park’s litter rating from an A to a B+. Fergus Galvin, Director of Services with Waterford City and County Council said it was a great accolade for the city. “There has been great investment from local schools, voluntary committees and business communities and that commitment has resulted in Waterford topping the cleanest city table.” awareness “Environmental initiatives such as the antilitter challenge for secondary schools, tackling single-use plastics, Picker Pals, and the Gum Litter Task Force have paid dividends, by not only

Maritime museum THERE are fresh calls for a dedicated maritime museum in Waterford, after People Before Profit (PBP) say Waterford is an outlier among other European port cities in not having a museum given the city and county’s rich maritime history. John Cloono says it’s something people, particularly those involved in maritime groups, would like to see and has called for a public meeting.

Calls for hybrid Leaving

FINAL year second level students have been through a huge amount of disruption over the last two years and a decision on the Leaving Certificate needs to be made soon, according to the Metropolitan Mayor of Waterford, Cllr Seamus Ryan Mayor. Cllr Ryan has backed the call of Labour Education Spokesperson Aodhan O Riordain, for a return to the hybrid model of Leaving Cert 2021, saying: “The Minister for Education needs make a quick decision on the Leaving Cert and she needs to decide to run the Leaving Cert for 2022 on the same hybrid basis as last year. The Minister must accept that the education experience for students is still being negatively impacted by the pandemic and further dither and delay on this is unfair on students who have already suffered enough. “By bringing certainty for students now, the Minister will remove any confusion for the rest of the school year by accepting again that the hybrid system of written exams and calculated grades will be needed again in 2022,” he said.

Price of Waterford houses to rise by 5% in 2022

THE price of the average threebed semi in both Waterford City and county is expected to rise by 5% over the next 12 months, according to a survey by Real Estate Alliance. Three-bed semi-detached homes in the city now cost an average of €250,000, up 9% on the December 2020 average of €230,000, the REA Average House Price Index shows. Prices across the county have risen to an average of €205,000, up 2.5% in the final quarter of the year and an annual increase of 12% from €182,500. The survey concentrates on the actual sale price of Ireland’s typical stock home, the threebed semi, giving an up-to-date picture of the second-hand property market. Landlords exiting the market have accounted for almost onein-four home sales over the past three months, the data shows. “Price continues to be influenced by low levels of new stock coming to the market for sale,” said Eamonn Spratt of REA Spratt, Dungarvan. “There is significant evidence of landlords vacating the rental market by reason of two influencing factors. “Firstly, prices are now at a high level in contrast to previous years and landlords’ properties are now potentially clear of any loans. “In addition, the changing

legislation associated with the residential rental market is becoming a deterrent to the non-institutional landlords.” In the last three months of 2021, prices in Waterford county increased by 2.5%, and city prices remained unchanged. “We are currently seeing a strong demand on the market, with scarcity of supply resulting in competitive bidding and a shorter selling period,” said Des O’Shea of REA O’Shea O’Toole, Waterford city. “The purchasers we are seeing are mostly owner occupier.” Average house prices rose by 2.24% nationally in the last three months of 2021, half the rise experienced between June and September as demand eased and the market calmed. The price of a three-bedroomed semi-detached house across the country rose by €5,900 over the past three months to €269,963, an annual increase of 13%. Selling prices rose in commuter areas (3.34%) and the country’s large towns (2.57%) as buyers continue to move out further from the capital in anticipation of long-term remote and hybrid working situations. Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford cities shared a combined increase of 0.8% in the past 12 weeks, with the average three-bed semi now costing €283,000.

Pampering at home has never been easier Waterford native, Elaine Doheny, has launched an app that allows you to be literally pampered in your own home. Elaine, from Portlaw, has been based in Australia for the last seven years and the app, uGlow, was developed in Melbourne during the strict lockdown in May 2020 and brought to life during Elaine’s maternity leave in 2021. The uGlow app is a booking platform for health, beauty and wellbeing services wherever, and whenever you want to avail of them. If it’s a facial, a blow dry, personal training, a massage, personal styling or a spray tan you’re after, you can book it through uGlow. In the first phase of the launch, uGlow are looking for professionals (GloPro’s) to sign up to the app. The services will be available from April. The idea came about after Elaine had heard many friends and family wishing how they’d love a service that allowed them to be pampered in their own homes. Elaine is planning on returning home to Ireland soon,

Housing subsidy ‘driving poverty’

THE poverty risk of households in receipt of housing subsidies is two-and-a-half times greater after they have paid their rent, according to Social Justice Ireland’s latest study, ‘Housing and Poverty 2022’. Far from supporting families out of poverty, housing subsidies are so inadequate as to be driving greater numbers into it, according to the report. Dr Sean Healy, CEO of Social Justice Ireland said: “It should be a national priority to provide all with sufficient income to live life with dignity. “We have argued for years that housing subsidies such as the Housing Assistance Payment and Rental Accommodation Scheme did not work. This latest study provides further proof of that. “The poverty rate among households in receipt of housing subsidies is 22.7% before they make any rent payments. After these payments have been made, that rate increases to 55.9 per cent,” he said. To view the full report, go to: www.socialjustice.ie

Fresh appeal for Funding missing Imelda available Imelda Keenan disappeared on a January afternoon in Waterford in 1994

THE brother of Imelda Keenan — who went missing after leaving the apartment she shared with her boyfriend on William Street, in Waterford, on January 3rd, 1994 — has revealed how he visits a plaque as he has no grave to visit. Gerry Keenan (63), believes she didn’t leave of her own accord and rather met a sinister end. The father-of-six said he is not out for revenge but just wants to end his pain and know where her remains are so he can give her a proper burial. It comes as gardai have made a fresh appeal on the cold-case investigation into Imelda’s disappearance. Reports from the time say that on the day

she went missing, 22-yearold Imelda, originally from Mountmellick, Co Laois, put on a pair of leopard-skin trousers and a denim jacket and informed her boyfriend that she was going out to collect her dole. She left her rented accommodation, walked past the bridge where her memorial plaque hangs today, and was never seen again. Speaking to the Irish Sunday Mirror, Gerry said: “I believe there are two or three people in Waterford holding back vital information, who know what may have happened to her.” Anyone with information can call the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.

to boost angling

WITH 18% of adults in Ireland saying they are “likely to try” angling in the future, now is the chance for Waterford’s clubs to apply for funding under the Inland Fisheries 2022 Sponsorship Programme. The programme is one of the main funding mechanisms used to promote angling in Ireland. It awarded funding to 41 events in 2021 and Suzanne Campion, Head of Business Development at Inland Fisheries Ireland, said: “As more people in Waterford enjoy the health and wellbeing benefits of being outdoors, mainly driven by Covid-19 guidelines, we are seeing greater levels of interest in angling nationally. In addition to supporting those who would like to go fishing for the first time, we also have a unique opportunity through the Sponsorship Programme to highlight the importance of biodiversity, conservation and sustainable angling.” The deadline is Friday, January 21st 2022, see: www.fisheriesireland.ie

A myth that has pushed up the price of drink

A

v e r a g e consumption of alcohol in Ireland has been falling for the past decade. It’s not much of a drop, nothing to

get excited about, but the trend is down. The World Health Organisation measures consumption of pure alcohol and its figures show that the difference in consumption between most European countries is quite small,

about a litre a year. On average, we consume more of the demon drink than Italians and Danes, less than the Germans and Czechs, about the same as the Spanish, the French and our neighbours in Britain. That may come as a surprise to you, because, as a nation, we are constantly upbraided for our drinking by bodies such as Drinkaware and Alcohol Action, who have pushed the Government into a number of measures aimed at making the perfectly legal purchase of alcohol a bit more difficult. Shops have been forced to fence off their beer, wine and spirits and exclude them from promotions such as voucher schemes and loyalty points. Since January 4, they have been obliged to enforce minimum pricing which, contrary to the claims of its supporters, does not apply only to very lowpriced drinks. The minimum price is imposed per gram of alcohol. It doesn’t hit products at the very top of the range, but it pushes up the price of many drinks that are widely enjoyed. A survey in the Irish Independent estimated that it will add more than €6 to the price of a bottle of Corley’s gin, €2 to a bottle of Power’s

Michael Wolsey whiskey, €5 to the Smirnoff sold by Aldi and almost €23 to the 24-pack of Budweiser sold by SuperValu. I doubt if this measure will curtail drinking. Some people will shop across the Border. Most of us will just spend a bit more of our money on alcohol. Since drink consumption has been falling anyway, we will never know for sure whether minimum pricing works But, in any case, why is this the Government’s business? We have a wide range of laws to regulate the sale of alcohol and punish any anti-social behaviour caused by drinking: laws against drink-driving, under-age drinking and being drunk and disordely. There is even a law against simply being drunk in a public place, al-

though I cannot recall it being enforced. So why does the Government feel the need for other measures, aimed not at anti-social behaviour but at changing our social habits? It’s because we are always being told that Ireland has a uniquely serious problem with drink and we cannot be trusted to regulate our individual alcohol purchases. And that’s just not true. Ireland is not an outlier. In every country that allows the sale of alcohol there is sometimes some degree of excessive drinking. A few years ago I was invited, along with some other Irish journalists, on a tour of Swedish industry and we enjoyed wonderful hospitality at several boardroom dinners. At the end of the meal everyone was given a small glass of a fiery spirit called aquavit. The most senior of our hosts would make a speech of welcome and propose a toast “to our delightful guests”. After a suitable reply, every one of the Swedes would make a little speech, ending with a toast and another glass of aquavit. Swedes, who had been models of sobriety earlier in the day,

became incredibly drunk. One man quite literally fell under the table. They don’t fall under the table in Japan. But in Hiroshima, I watched in amazement as tired businessmen, having consumed too much beer or sake, would slump down on the bar and go to sleep. I have seen Germans, on their way to work, drinking beer at 8am and (much more worrying) French truck drivers downing a quick brandy at the same hour. When an attempt was made to introduce “dry January ‘’ to France, 42 sports stars, chefs and actors signed a letter protesting at this “Anglo-Saxon puritanical madness”. And Claire Touzard, a Parisan who decided to give up alcohol, complained in a book she wrote about it, that “saying you are giving up drinking in France is like putting a bomb on the table. Nobody in France is sober”. There is no reason why Ireland should emulate the bad habits of other countries. But there is no reason either for our constant self-criticism. Ireland is not an exceptionally heavy drinking country and the myth that it is should not be allowed to dictate our laws and regulations.

WILDLIFE

ninenottomiss

Go wild in 2022

podcast of the week book of the week

with Justin Ivory

As we head into 2022 and a new year, we are all very much aware of the two big issues of the day – the climate crisis and the biodiversity emergency. Our wildlife (biodiversity) is in real trouble and needs all the help it can get. There are millions of gardens of all shapes and sizes in Ireland and together they can form a massive potential refuge for many species. So, go wild in your garden in 2022 and bring the wonders of nature to your doorstep. The good news is that in a lot of cases the steps needed involve doing less work – a win-win situation for all! Spread over the next 3 columns I’ll list some simple actions you can take to help make your garden a wilder place in 2022. 1. Open a bird café One of the easiest and most rewarding things to do is start feeding the birds. Bird tables, feeders and feeding stations come in many shapes and sizes. The more the merrier. Putting out a variety of food will attract the greatest range of species. Some of the best foods are sunflower hearts, nyger seed, peanuts, dried mealworms (or live mealworms even better!) and special Robin mix.

2. Leave the leaves Save yourself time and effort and leave those dead leaves be. Dead leaves provide food and shelter for a myriad of minibeasts. They also break down and enrich the soil. If you can’t bear them scattered everywhere then make a couple of piles of them in secluded spots in the garden. If moving such a pile at any stage don’t forget to check for hibernating hedgehogs!

It is full of reassuringly grounded advice and nuggets of wisdom on how to navigate the pressures of life and find joy in the everyday. THIS fantastic novel from Northern Ireland writer, Han Carson, centres on the absorbing story of young Hannah, a teenager who lives in a small community in Belfast. As other teenagers in her class start dying from a mysterious disease, Hannah finds herself in a very unusual position, as the only one who seems to be immune. Hannah, ever the outsider, is haunted by guilt as she remains healthy while her friends are struck down. Isolated and afraid, she prays for help. What happens next will force her to question everything she believes.

IT’S San Fernando Valley, 1973. Gary Valentine (Cooper Hoffman) is a 15-year-old actor and something of a hustler. Alana Kane (Alana Haim) is a 25-year-old photographer’s assistant who’s fed up with her job and family life. He’s cute and dorky; she’s feisty. The two form a friendship and over one summer, they face trials and tribulations as they start a business together and navigate what could be first love. This cracker of a coming of age movie features some very funny cameos, with Sean Penn, Bradley Cooper and Tom Waits . . . not to mention an amazing 1970s soundtrack.

In loving memory of Ellen Foskin, 3 O’Connell Steet, Waterford 6th January 2017. If Roses grow in Heaven Lord, Please pick a bunch for me, Place them in my Mother’s arms, Tell her they’re from me. Tell her I love and miss her And when she turns to smile, Place a kiss upon her cheek And hold her for a while. Remembering her is easy, I wish she could have stayed, But you called her to your garden Lord, Where we’ll meet again some day - Forever in our hearts, from Teresa, Richard and Laurence

In Loving Memory Unseen and unheard but always near, So loved, so missed, so very dear

7th Anniversary KEVIN MORRISSEY

10th Anniversary JASON MARSHALL my brother, missing you always, sister Jane and niece Kyra

Sadly gone but not forgotten, Not the same world when you’re not here. - Your loving niece Amie You went away so suddenly, We did not say goodbye, Brothers can never be parted, Precious memories never die. - Love your brother Kicker. 7th anniversary of Kevin Morrissey, late of 59 Farran Park and 31 Catherine’s Grange, who died on the 11th January 2015. Mass offered in the Sacred Heart Church on Wednesday 12th January at 7pm. We were honoured and privileged. To have you as a son, A kind and gentle person, A loving dad too, Your heart was always open, Your smile so warm and sweet, Your arms were full of love, You made us feel complete, A photo we treasure is all we can touch, Of a son we will love forever, And miss so very much. - From your heartbroken Mam and Dad xxx. Walk alongside me Daddy, And hold my little hand, I have so many things to learn, That I don’t yet understand, Teach me things to keep me safe, From dangers every day, Show me how to do my best, At home, at school, at play, Every child needs a gentle hand, To guide them on as they grow, So walk alongside me Daddy, We have a long way to go. - Missed today and always by your daughter Abbey Today’s the anniversary, Of the day that I lost you, And for a time it felt as though, My life had ended too, But loss has taught me many things, And now I face each day, With hope and happy memories, To help me on my way, And though I’m full of sadness, That you’re no longer here, Your influence still guides me, And I still feel you near, What we shared will never die, It lives within my heart, Bringing strength and comfort, While we are apart. - Always loved and sadly missed from Christina God saw you getting tired, When a cure was not to be, He closed his arms around you And whispered “come with me”. With tearful eyes we watched you, We watched you fade away, Although we loved you dearly, We could not make you stay, A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands at rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best. - Love your brother Mark and Mary xxx.

No special day is needed, For us to think of you, For you were someone special, And we thought the world of you, - Always remembered by Jane and Kyra Precious memories hold you dear, As time unfolds another year, No longer in our lives to share, But in our hearts you are always there, If memories bring us closer, We are never far apart, For you are always with us, In our thoughts and in our hearts. - Sadly missed by Johanna and John When nights are cold, And stars are few, I close my eyes and think of you, A silent hope, a silent tear, A silent wish that you are near. - Thinking of you today and everday, love Eamonn and Louise and Darragh Your needs were simple, Your wants were few, If your family were happy, so were you, Loved and respected by all you knew, Always willing, helpful and kind, What beautiful memories you left behind. - Sadly missed by Paddy and Joan He left us quietly, His thoughts unknown, But left us a memory, We are proud to own, So treasure him Lord, In your garden of rest, For when on earth, He was one of the best. - Rest in Peace Mossy Cuz, God only takes the best, love Steven, Brooklyn, Aaliayah, Savannah-Rae, Richard and Dillon xxx Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us everyday. Unseen, unheard but always near, Still loved, still missed and always dear. - Sadly missed by Steven, Arianna and Makayla Just a thought of sweet remembrance, Just a memory, sad and true, Just the love and sweet devotion, Of the one who thinks of you. -From your friend Derek

In loving memory of Jason Marshall who died on 15th January 2012. Mass offered in the Sacred Heart Church on Wednesday 12th January at 7pm. Do not stand at my grave, I am not there I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle Autumn rain, When you awaken in the morning hush, I am the soft uplifting rush, Of quiet birds in circled flight, Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I did not die. - Always loved and never forgotten by your brother John and sister Johanna You gave no-one a last farewell, Nor ever said goodbye, You were gone before we knew it, And only God knows why, A million times we cry, If love alone could have saved you, You never would have died. In life you were loved dearly, In death we love you still, In our hearts you hold a place, No one can fill. We will meet again someday, I know in a better place. - I thank God He made you

Today is full of memories, Of a brother laid to rest, And every single one of them, Is filled with happiness, For you were someone special, Always such a joy to know, And there was so much pain, When it was time to let you go, That’s why this special message, Is sent to Heaven above, For the angels to take care of you, And give you all my love. - From your sister Louise and brother-in-law Eamon and Darragh Today we light some candles, And say a special prayer, We go down memory lane, And know that you are there, Our hearts are full of memories, With pride we speak your name, Though life goes on without you, It will never be the same. - Love from your sister Christina, niece Abbey and Shane As time unfolds another year, Memories keep you ever near, Silent thoughts of time together, Hold memories that will last forever. - Sadly missed your brother Stephen, partner Michelle, niece Arianna, & goddaughter Makayla A tribute of love , So close to our hearts, Each day of the year, We will always have memories, Of a wonderful son, To cherish and hold. - Missing you Jason forever, Dad and Mam

Thank you to everyone who played and entered a score in round 1. Well done to the team managers who got players out to return 4 scores for their respective teams despite the awful weather conditions over the past few weeks. As the round 1 leaderboard indicates, there is very little seperating the 12 teams and all is set up for a hectic battle for the qualifying matchplay stage. As always the Winter League committee have done an excellent job in selecting the teams and in keeping the managers informed on a weekly basis. With weather conditions set to improve and a stretch in the evenings we look forward to an improved turnout in round 2. Remember it’s your team and it’s your club, so let’s all do our bit to make 2022 a year to remember. Power surges to 63rd in the World after top 15 finish in Hawaii. Seamus Power shot a final round of six under 67 at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii at the weekend to climb to a career high 63rd in the official World Golf Rankings as his rapid rise continues. The West Waterford man played his final 54 holes blemish free to finish in a share of 15th on twenty-underpar. Considering this was his first appearance at the event this was quite an achievement when you look at the big names behind him on the leaderboard. Seamus will rue a catalogue of missed opportunities on the greens but must be encouraged by his stellar play from tee to green. Following four opening pars in his final round on Sunday Seamus birdied the two par-fives (5 and 9) to turn in 34, and followed with a brace of birdies on 11 and 12 to put himself

within reach of the top-10. Two more birdies on 15 and 18 saw him complete the back 9 in 33 for a cheque of €132,500.
