ARTIST Maeve Doherty, who lives and works out of her studio in Waterford city, was commissioned to create a painting of the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Bridge. She attended the opening ceremony and presented her painting to Rose Kennedy Townsend, a grandchild of Robert and Ethel Kennedy and great grand-daughter of the woman for whom the bridge was named. The event was especially

close to Maeve’s heart as she is related to the Kennedy family. She was accompanied to the ceremony by her uncle Pat Kennedy, from the Dunganstown ancestral home close to the new bridge, the longest in Ireland. She is pictured here with Pat Kennedy and Rose Kennedy Townsend. Maeve is a full time, professional, registered artist and has been exhibiting her paintings for the past

30 years. Her main solo exhibition is at Butler House gallery Kilkenny throughout the Kilkenny Arts Festival each year. Maeve exhibits at Greenacres Gallery, Wexford Town, where she is a selected artist for the annual show at the Wexford Festival Opera, as well as The Beach House Gallery and The Old Market House Arts Centre, Dungarvan and the Breakwater, Dunmore East.

Flower power at Mount Congreve

Hurling legend ‘Brick’ tells of his great regret

SPRING has sprung - if you don’t believe it you should pop along to Mount Congreve Gardens . The world-famous gardens, just 10 minutes from Waterford city, will open early this year, on February 14, to showcase more than &URFXVHV LQ ÀRZHU During 2019 thousands of Crocus bulbs were added to the varieties within the gardens. Visitors will now be able to enjoy a jewel-like carpet of colour under the canopy of some of Mount Congreve’s largest trees. With 16 kilometres of stunning walking trails meandering through the majestic woodland at Mount Congreve, its the perfect Spring exercise. There s a cafÊ and garden shop, plus 70 acres of gardens including a four-acre walled garden. For further details, see www.mountcongreve.com or follow Mount Congreve on social media.

MANY would rate him among the DĂŠise’s greatest sporting heroes, but Michael ‘Brick’ Walsh says he was “a very average hurlerâ€? who got a kick out of training hard and managed to carve a career from it. “I probably wouldn’t have myself in there,â€? said Walsh, commenting on his inclusion in a Team of the Millennium selection that included the OLNHV RI +HQU\ 6KHྡLQ DQG -RH Canning. “It’s probably all a matter of opinion,â€? he told the Irish Times. “I played for so long that a lot of people might just throw me in for the sake of it too. “Those players are fantastic players but I never really enjoyed individual things, never was a fan of them because, at the end of the day, as I always said, you can argue about an All-Star or Team of the Decade or something like that but you FDQÂśW DUJXH ZLWK +HQU\ 6KHྡLQ having 10 All-Irelands.

“Everything is debatable bar the team that wins, and that’s what I always wanted, I always wanted to win with my group. Unfortunately for Walsh, and Waterford, he never got to experience the ultimate celebration after an All-Ireland triumph. He was captain in 2008 when Waterford were whitewashed by a Kilkenny side at its peak and was there also in 2017 when they lost to Galway by three points. The 36-year-old father of three is a four-time All-Star and alltime record holder for hurling championship appearances. Media mash-up and magic

A new reality in Irish politics

T

o say that the results of the General Election have been unprecedented is to put things mildly. The historic vote for Sinn Fein on the day was perhaps something that no one could have expected, but happen it did. It is perhaps one of the reasons that Sinn Fein GLGQœW ¿HOG DV PDQ\ FDQGLGDWHV DV WKH\ GLG While they were polling well all the way along during the campaigning, so well that RTE had to include Mary Lou MacDonald in a leader’s debate with Michael Martin and Leo Varadkar, the only real poll that matters is the one that happens on voting day. And they did spectacularly well. +HUH LQ :DWHUIRUG WKH\ UHFHLYHG RQH RI WKH KLJKHVW ¿UVW preference votes that has ever been recorded with David Cullinane getting nearly 20,000 votes. If they had run another candidate along with them then it wouldn’t be unlikely that Waterford could have returned two Sinn Fein T.D.’s. As it stands the party decided to have only one candidate and you would have to wonder what kind of internal polling or analysis that Sinn Fein had access to before entering the election. It is not as if the General Election came as a surprise to anyone, it was a long time coming down the tracks and all the political parties had enough time to get their research done. ,I WKH\ KDG ¿HOGHG PRUH FDQGLGDWHV WKH\ ZRXOG QRZ EH LQ D much stronger position to enter coalition talks with either of the two main parties. What was interesting to see and hear was the swiftness the leaders of the the two other parties reacted to Sinn Fein’s success. While they may have numerous statements categorically saying that they would never go into coalition with Sinn Fein it does seem that pride will goeth before a fall into Sinn Fein’s arms. One of the other main stories regarding the election here in Waterford was the number of people who supported the Independent candidate Matt Shanahan whose main campaigning points revolved around the status of the UHW. This is the clearest message that Waterford people could have sent about how they feel their hospital is being treated. If hindsight is 20/20 then there are lots of lessons to be learned from this election. Maybe Fine Gael shouldn’t have run two candidates and the growing power of The Green Party on a local and national stage is only set to become stronger. But there was only one real message to take away from the election and that is the old certainties are gone and a new reality has emerged in Irish politics.

Three-card trick with SF the only winner

H

is poll-toppng triumph has made David Cullinane the uncrowned king of Waterford although, as a staunch republican, he will probably reject the royal title. It’s a pity he blotted his FRS\ERRN ZLWK WKDW RŕľľHQVLYH ‘Up the Ra’ nonsense at his victory celebration. It has detracted from a hugely impressive performance that wiped out Fine Gael in Waterford and helped elect hospital campaigner Matt Shanahan and Marc Ă“ Cathasaigh of the Green Party . He has contributed VLJQLÂżFDQWO\ WR D QDWLRQDO UHVXOW which has dealt Sinn FĂŠin a winning hand when it comes to forming a government. There are three feasible options. ‡ )LDQQD )iLO )LQH *DHO DQG some independents form a grand coalition. ‡ 6LQQ )pLQ DQG )LDQQD )iLO form a government or work

Michael Wolsey together in some variation on FRQ¿GHQFH DQG VXSSO\ ‡ 7KHUH LV DQRWKHU JHQHUDO election. Mary Lou McDonald has hopes of leading a leftwing coaltion but the numbers are not there for her. She would need the support of almost every LQGHSHQGHQW LQ WKH 'iLO VRPH of whom are far from leftwing and would not work with her even if she is prerpared to work with them. She needn’t worry. Whatever way the three-card trick plays out, Sinn FÊin will be the winner. Voters will not want another election and would punish parties they believe forced it

on the country. They would not blame Sinn FÊin. Ms McDonald has expressed willingness to discuss government formation with anyone. Whether she will make the compromises necessary to get a working government in place is another matter, but at this early stage she cannot be accused of intransigence. If FF and FG refuse to negotiate, they will be blamed. And Sinn FÊin would not make the mistake of running too few candidates for a second time. It would have people in place to EHQH¿W IURP WKH KXJH VXUSOXVHV the party clocked up in. If Sinn FÊin does go into coalition negotiations with )LDQQD )iLO LW ZLOO GR VR IURP D position of strength. FF may have a few more seats but SF has the high ground. Ms McDonald will be able to demand key ministries and insist on implementation of most of her party’s policies, safe in the knowledge that failed negotiations would lead to an election she will win. Smaller parties rarely have

a happy time in coalition but, in this case, regardless of the actual numbers, it is Sinn FÊin who would be in the driving seat. The possibility of an FF-FG coalition may come into play if all else fails, but it is an unlikely option. It would look like an arrogant rejection of the voters’ wishes and the parties would VX྾HU IRU LW ZKHQ WKH\ QH[W ZHQW to the country. In any case, those two parties do not have the numbers to form a government by themselves; they would need the support of some independents. That is the proof of how far they have slipped. Forty years DJR )LDQQD )iLO ZDV FDSDEOH of forming a single-party government. If anyone had then forecast a day when the combined numbers of FF and )* ZRXOG QRW DGG XS WR D 'iLO majority they would have been laughed out of court. Those parties aren’t laughing now. The old certainties are gone. All changed, changed utterly. But we don’t yet know what has been born.

Paving Paradise

waterford-today.ie February 12, 2020

ninenottomiss BOOK of the week

‘They paved paradise And put up a parking lot..’ So sang Joni Mitchell in her hit Big Yellow Taxi 50 years ago. 50 years on and here we are in the middle of a Biodiversity and Climate crisis that will at best significantly adversely affect life for all species on the planet and at worst threaten the very survival of humankind. Even though urgent and immediate action on a local, national and global scale is needed more than ever, what are they planning to spend our tax euros on in Co. Wicklow? A so-called coastal ‘green’way from Greystones to Wicklow Town that will see an existing, well-used natural trail running through an area rich in wildlife with magnificent vistas of mountains and sea, tarmacked and suburbanised. An area protected under EU law (it is a designated SAC and SPA) for its unique habitats and biodiversity, already visited and walked by thousands of people annually, (for not just decades but probably centuries). They want to throng this very special place with 250,000 visitors annually and fill it with human noise and activity. Destroying the very reason people go there in the first place for peace and quiet, to get away from it all and enjoy nature.

Beautiful vista from the Wicklow coastal trail (Photo Justin Ivory)

Why is this needless vandalism of nature even happening? The financial selfinterests of a few business people in Wicklow Town with some populist and dubious PR around human recreational activities appears to this writer to be the primary motivations. This is symptomatic of the lack of a long-term sustainable approach to all our activities in favour of short-sighted, human-centric, short-term benefits for a minority with a long-term negative impact for the majority, future generations and other species that has been played out locally, nationally and globally over the last few decades. It beggar’s belief that this sort of thinking and project is still being given credence and funding. We owe it to ourselves, our children, future generations and other species to do better than this.

AUTOPSY USA: MICHAEL HUTCHENCE Thursday 13 February, Virgin Media 2 @ 9pm

A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD Running Time: 1hr 49min.

Set in the Irish Famine, a young woman’s searches for fulfillment in love and happiness in life. She encounters on that quest , sadness and joy to eventually find what she is longing for true love in the arms of an unlikely hero called Michael. This book is a work of semi fiction and is loosely connected with the song “The Fields of Athenry “ while the characters are fictional the hurricane and the Irish Famine are not. hese two major events within a short space of time devastated the very lives of people who lived during this time.

Episode 1: Dr Richard Shepherd returns to investigate further cases of celebrities who died unexpectedly, beginning with INXS frontman Michael Hutchence, who was found dead in his Sydney hotel room in November 1997. The forensic pathologist is helped by coroner Derrick Hand and psychologist Anjula Mutanda to chart the events and consider the rock star’s state of mind at the time, and there are detailed dramatic reconstructions and interviews with those who knew him

Tom Hanks portrays Mister Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, a timely story of kindness triumphing over cynicism, based on the true story of a real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and journalist Tom Junod. After a jaded magazine writer (Emmy winner Matthew Rhys) is assigned a profile of Fred Rogers, he overcomes his skepticism, learning about kindness, love and forgiveness from America’s most beloved neighbor.

In Loving Memory

4th Anniversary & Birthday Remembrance MICK (PLUS) POWER

Unseen and unheard but always near, So loved, so missed, so very dear 19th Anniversary BRIAN WINTER

In Heaven you rest, No worries no pain, In God’s own time, We will meet again.

A tribute of love to a sister so dear, So close to our hearts each day of the year, We will always have memories to cherish and hold, Of a wonderful sister more precious than gold. - From your brother William, Julie, Elizabeth, Luke & Adam, Alan, Sinead & Niamh God saw you getting tired, When a cure was not to be, He closed his arms around you And whispered “come with me”. Not a day do we forget you, In our hearts you are forever near, As we loved you so we miss you, As it dawns another year. - Always loved and remembered, brother Jimmy, Marie and family

60th Birthday Remembrance PATRICIA MCEVOY

In loving memory of Brian (Martin) Winter late of 125 Ardmore Park, Ballybeg, Waterford, who died 11th of February, 2002. R.I.P. I know all my life I’ll miss you For you meant the world to me, I have such precious memories That others cannot see, They are mine to keep forever From which I’ll never part, I’ll hold them very close to me, Locked within my heart, In Heaven someday I’ll find you And all this hurt will go, I’ll put my arms around you And say Brian I’ve missed you so. - Loved today & everyday your wife Phyllis. You never said a last farewell Or even said goodbye, For you were gone before we knew, And only God knows why, We often sit and think of you And think of how you died, Many times we’ve talked of you And many times we’ve cried. - loved & remembered by your son BJ, Taylor & Bobby, Alfie & Lexie Softly on that morning You heard a gentle call, You took the hand God offered you And quietly left us all, No matter how life changes, No matter what I do, A special place within my heart Is always kept for you. I remember a voice I would love to hear

Birthday Remembrance of Patricia McEvoy, late of Pinewood Avenue. Patsy, The days go by without you, And each one is the same, My mind is filled with thoughts of you, In tears I call your name, They say that times a healer, And that life has to go on, But my life will never be the same, Now the one I love is gone. - Happy Birthday from your husband Joe NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Take it Dear Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart, where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. J.S.

6th Anniversary MARIA BRESLIN

11th Anniversary PHILIP TYRRELL

And a father I loved so much, As each day dawns & starts anew, As each day ends I think of you, And in between no matter where Deep in my heart you are always there, If love could have kept you Dad You never would have died, So with a broken heart I whisper low, God bless you Dad I love you so. - Always remembered by your daughter Laura & Brian

In loving memory of Betty McKenna (nee Stacey) late of Skibbereen Lawn, Lismore Park, Waterford who died on 11th February 1982.

- From your sister Sharon, Derrick, Evan, Daniel & Lydia

2nd Anniversary ELIZABETH (LILY ) RYAN

O HOLY ST ANTHONY Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore of you to obtain for me my request....(Pause) The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so you are the saint of miracles. O gentle and loving St Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, intercede for me and whisper my prayer into the ear of the sweet Infant Jesus who loved to linger in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will be yours. A.P. NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Take it Dear Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart, where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. I.D.

God must have thought you special, To take you the way He did, They say He only takes the best And this He surely did, Look around your garden Lord For an angel with a smile, He won’t be hard to recognise, He must stand out a mile, So put your arms around him Lord And kiss his smiling face, For he is very special And can never be replaced, They say that time heals everything But I can’t believe that’s true, For the ache in my heart is still the same As the day I first lost you. - Always be remembered & loved by your daughter Dawn, Quinn and Baby Trinity & Bodie The most wonderful father ever to live, Whatever he had he was willing to give, He never complained He was not that kind, He was one of those people hard to find, Thank you Dad for the times we shared For the love & the way you cared, Look after him Lord as he takes his rest, For he was my beloved Dad And one of the best. - loving you always your daughter Linda & Philip, Jake & Jorgie

You can shed tears that he is gone, Or you can smile because he has lived, You can close your eyes and pray that he’ll come back. Or you can open your eyes and see that he’s left. Your heart can be empty, Because you can see him, Or you can be full of the love you shared, You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday, Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday, You can remember him and only that he is gone, Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on, You can cry and close your mind, Be empty and turn your back, Or you can do what he’d want, Smile, open your eyes, love and go on. “Love and Light” - Loved and missed by your wife Moya, daughters Lynn and Hazel, and grandchildren Chloe, Colyn and Matthew Never more than a thought away, Loved and remembered every day, Will those who think of Mick today, A little prayer to Jesus say. - From Mam, sister Margaret and brother Noel

8th & 34th Anniversary MAY & PETER HEARNE

In loving memory of Paula Fennelly, whose 3rd anniversary occurs on 22nd February. Mass offered in Ballybricken Church on Saturday 15th February at 7pm. Sometimes when we first awake, We think that you’re still here, And for a fleeting moment, The clouds all disappear, For you brought endless sunshine, Until you went away, And now we miss you desperately, Each minute of the day. You would not like to see us sad, So what we say to do, Is live a bright and happy life, In memory of you, For though we’ll always miss you, And it’s dreadful being apart, We haven’t really lost you, You’re still here in our hearts. - From your loving husband George and daughters Rachel and Lisa. A date that’s filled with sadness, Returns to us today, it marks the day you left us, In such a sudden way, No sad farewells were spoken, No time to say godbye, You were gone before we knew it, And only God knows why. - Always remembered by your sister Kathleen and family.

In loving memory of Tommy Kelly, late of Hennessy’s road, Waterford, who died on the 11th of February 1963. God called your name so softly, That only you could hear, And no one heard the footsteps, Of angels drawing near, In broke my heart to lose you Dad, It broke my mams too, But when you left, you did not go alone, For part of us went with you too, The day God called you home. - Always remembered by your son Frankie and family. R.I.P. Dad
