Covid crisis fails to shake salaries THE Covid pandemic will not hit salaries in Waterford this year, a recruitment agency predicts. The Matrix Recruitment 2021 Salary Guide says earnings here will hold steady across a wide range of sectors, including finance, manufacturing, engineering, IT and laboratory work. The Covid crisis may even have made employment in Waterford more inviting. The agency says businesses have begun exploring the option of extending their operations outside of Dublin, with the South East being a top choice for sectors such as financial services, compliance, IT and supply chain. According to last year’s Salary Guide, finance business partners in the South East had the potential to earn up to €85K but the outlook for 2021 is more positive, with this year’s Guide forecasting a rise of 12% to €95K. Financial controller (accountancy) salaries in the South East, Midlands and West

are set to rise by up to 10% and, in 2021, those with several years’ experience can expect to earn up to €110K. Supply chain manager salaries in the South East are expected to increase by 5% in 2021 to between €70K - €90K, depending on experience. Supply chain directors can command a starting salary of €90K, regardless of geographic location. Speaking about the employment outlook for 2021, Kieran McKeown, MD of Matrix Recruitment, said: “Any measure of sectoral stability is to be welcomed and the outlook is more positive than we would have anticipated six months ago, given the turbulence of the employment market during 2020.” Mr McKeown said wages still tend to be higher in Dublin “but many candidates are willing to consider a slightly lower salary for a better work/life balance outside of Dublin”. >>Anger at ‘Cork bias’ in vaccine rollout: Page 6

House prices rise but slip is showing

HOUSE prices in Waterford fell by €5,000 in the last quarter of 2020 but that still left them €5,000 higher than a year. ago. The MyHome.ie Property Report shows that the median asking price for a property in the city and county is €180,000. The median price is the ‘middle price’. and a more accurate guage than the ‘average price’. Asking prices for a 3-bed semi-detached house here remained unchanged over the final quarter at €185,000. Prices for this type are up by €10,000 compared to this time last year. Meanwhile, the asking price for a 4-bed semi-detached house in Waterford stayed steady over the quarter at €220,000. This means prices in the segment were up €1,000 compared to this time last year, according to the MyHome.ie Property Report in association with Davy. The number of properties for sale in Waterford on MyHome. ie rose by 5% in the last quarter and 10% on this time last year. Ambushed by pandemic Liam speaks

out for heart team that saved his life

JANUARY 7 was the 100th anniversary of the Pickardstown ambush, outside Tramore, the largest military engagement of the War of Independence in east Waterford. For many years an annual commemoration has been organised by the McGrath O’Brien (East Waterford) Cumann of Sinn Féin but Covid rerstrictions put a halt to this year’s plans. Instead, the cumann

pieced together a virtual commemoration which was broadcast live last Sunday on Facebook and has been viewed by more than 3,000 people. The oration was given by Sinn Féin leader, Mary Lou McDonald. In her speech, she acknowledged the sacrifices of the volunteers of the Waterford IRA, particularly Michael McGrath (Poleberry) and Thomas O’Brien

(Dunhill) who lost their lives in the ambush, and for whom the Cumann is named. She called for their memory and legacy to be honoured by the creation of a new and united Republic. The East Waterford Republican Roll of Honour was read by cumann member Billy Smyth. This Roll, is contained within the memorial at Pickardstown (pictured above).

Buy old school ‘and then open a new one’

WATERFORD council has been urged to buy the vacant Christian Brothers School in the centre of Tramore to provide a new school for the town. The building and surrounding site has been put on the market by its owners, the Edmund Rice Schools’ Trust. Fianna Fail Councillor Eamon Quinlan said this was a “unique opportunity for the local authorities to acquire the site, to provide educational facilities for a town now approaching 12,000 in population.” “Tramore is now the largest urban centre in the county after the city and has only one secondary school.” he said. “We need a new school and there is one for sale at the heart of the town. If we don’t snap it up we will only have to build a new one down the line on the edge of the town. “The Trust want rid of it and given how the hall along with the school on the site was built and maintained from local community fundraising, the whole thing should be going back to the community.”

A BUTCHER who was diagnosed with heart failure has told how the Irish Heart Foundation helped him get his life back from a condition which has a lower survival rate than many cancers. Liam Rossiter (pictured) who is one of an estimated 1,800 people living with heart failure in Waterford, fell ill in 2017 and put his symptoms down to a lack of exercise and travelling long distances to visit his hospitalised father. But when his breathing deteriorated and he began to turn blue, he needed hospital care himself and had fluid drained from his heart. “I was brought to a Cath lab and during that procedure (draining of fluid) it stopped, although with a shot of adrenaline they got me going again,” said the 54-year-old Dungarvan man. “Ultimately, it turned out I had developed a virus sometime in 2017, a bit like a flu and it got to my heart and damaged the left ventricle, which is the pumping side of the heart.” Heart failure or heart inefficiency occurs when the heart is not working as well as it should and is not pumping blood around the body efficiently. Now Liam is encouraging

people in a similar situation to engage with new nationwide supports being set up by the Irish Heart Foundation. He says that an IHF support group, which he still attends four years on, offers him vital reassurance and advice after the “scary diagnosis”. The charity has responded to a sense of isolation felt by people living with heart failure during Covid restrictions by enhancing support it provides with online groups and a podcast presented by retired RTE presenter Michael Lyster, who has experienced heart failure. The supports include a new podcast series, Nurse Support Line, new heart failure web page, Heart Support Network, online meetings, daily exercise on Facebook and peer to peer support. The IHF support service allows people to access regular information sessions on topics such as medication, lifestyle changes, self-management and diet. You can sign up to receive the supports at www.irishheart.ie or contact Lucinda McNerney, Heart Failure Programme Manager on 01 – 668 5001 or at heartfailure@irishheart.ie

From ‘mile-long car park’ to people’s park A POLITICAL party wants to put an end to the “current milelong car park” along Waterford’s South Quays. People Before Profit wants it replaced with a linear park from Rice Bridge to Adelphi Quay. “The park should include boardwalks, sculpture, kiosks, performance spaces or mini amphitheaters, lots of seating, an outdoor gym, children’s play areas, an inner-city summer sandy beach,” he party says in a submission to Waterford City and County Council on the 20222028 development plan. Sinn Féin Councillor Conor D. McGuinness, meanwhile, has called for young people’s

views to be listened to in framing the new plan. “Children and young adults must consulted as we prepare this plan,” he said. “A proactive and age specific approach should be employed to seek their views on all aspects of the plan.” On a separate issue, Cllr Mcguinness has called for “robust measures” to address an increase in illegal dumping. “It goes without saying that illegal dumping is deeply antisocia,” he said. “It’s bad for the environment, its a slap in the face to citizens who pay their way, and its unpleasant for those who happen upon it.”

Anger at ‘Cork bias’ as vaccine rollout begins THE programme of vaccination against Covid-19 stepped up a gear in Watertford this week. Residents and staff at care homes have been receiving the vaccine along with front line medical staff at University Hospital Waterford (UHW). A consignment of the Pfizer vaccine has been delivered to the UPMC Whitfield hospital which has begun a programme to vaccinate a mixture of UPMC and UHW staff who care for patients right across the South East. There was some criticism of how three hospitals in Cork were supplied with the vaccine before any was delivered to Waterford. Independent TD Matt Shanahan blamed the South South West Hospital Group

(SSWHG) for a “continued Cork bias”. “Yet again SSWHG leadership has shown its complete inability and dysfunction in overcoming its Cork-centric management ethos,” Mr Shanahan said. He said a vaccine rollout plan that prioritised Cork hospitals “while ignoring the significant Covid case burdens and staff risks existing in other regional acute hospitals in Waterford, Kerry, and Tipperary is a further signal of failure in SSWHG equitable recognition or governance.” Fianna Fáil councillor, Eddie Mulligan, said the delay in getting the vaccine to Waterford was “utterly unacceptable”. He sdaid UHW’s frontline workers had been “ treated as second-class care staff by the

SSW Hospital Group”. Sinn Féin spokesperson on Health, the Waterford TD David Cullinane, raised another issue when he called on the Minister for Health to publish more details on required staffing levels, vaccinator training and infrastructure plans for the mass rollout of Covid-19 vaccines to the wider population. He also called for a sevenday a week rollout in residential care facilities. “We need to see much more detail on staffing requirements for delivering Covid-19 vaccines from the Minister for Health,” he said. “We also need far clearer information on how many vaccinators will be needed, how many of them are being trained and how we will build capacity for a mass rollout of vaccines.”

New rule for birth partners

BECAUSE of Covid restrictions, partners are no longer allowed to attend the routine 20-22 week anatomy scan at the maternaity unit in University Hospital Waterford (UHW). The rule was imposed from Monday by the South/South West Hospital Group and also applies to its hospitals in Cork, Tralee and Tipperary. At UHW, birthing partners will still be able to attend

as soon as the mother is in established labour, for the birth itself and for delivery by caesarean section. After the birth, parents can stay for some time in the labour ward or recovery room. A statement from the hospital group explains: “We are sensitive to specific situations regarding pregnancy loss, stillbirth and unexpected complications and we have adapted our visiting

‘Odious’ web group moves to Waterford A GROUP described as “an odious campaign that has spread fear and disinformation” has moved its official location to Waterford. Leave.EU is a British group that campaigned for Brexit. Ironically it has made the move to maintain its eu domain now that the UK has left the European Union. Leave.EU was fined £70,000 by Britain’s Electoral Commission in May 2018 for exceeding spending limits for “non-party registered campaigners.” A criminal inquiry by the Metropolitan Police found insufficient evidence to justify further action. Fine Gael TD and party spokesperson on European Affairs, Neale Richmond, has referred the move to ComReg, the online communications regulator “Leave.eu is an odious campaign group that spread fear and disinformation throughout

the Brexit referendum and subsequent negotiation process,” he said. “The group is the subject of numerous legal disputes and has a reprehensible record in the UK. “Following the end of the transition period, the group has moved its registered office from the UK to Waterford in order to maintain its .eu domain name. Such a move not only maintains the domain name but also retains the group’s prominent profile on the internet through search engines, social media sites and existing references.” Mr Richmond said it was his understanding that to maintain a .eu registered domain name, an organisation must be an EU citizen or business based in the EU with other qualifying conditions. “We cannot allow Ireland to be a brass plate of convenience for this grouping and this requires rigorous scrutiny,” he said.

Please come back St Patrick

A

round this time last year I was enjoying a long weekend in Clare, a Christmas present from my daughters who joined me on the trip. Rumours of a new virus were in the air but the virus itself was mainly confined to China. When we saw some Chinese visitors wearing facemasks a normal precaution in Asia against ordinary colds and flu we joked that soon we might all be dressing that way. Some joke! Within weeks the virus had spread to Italy and shortly after that came the infamous Cheltenham meeting when hundreds of punters caught Covid and brought it back to Ireland. I still found it hard to take the threat seriously. Indeed, I wrote a piece saying this was just another variant on winter flu and there was no need to panic. The moral is that you should take your medical advice from a doctor, not a journalist. And not from a politician either,

Michael Wolsey although our politicians, just fresh from a general election campaign, were coping well with some very big decisions. Their biggest decision was to cancel all the St Patrick’s Day events. This announced, in effect, that Ireland was closed to visitors, and dealt a terrible blow to the tourist trade. However it was undoubtedly the right move. It stopped Covid’s first attack from turning into a total rout of our health service. Few thought then that this plague would still be ravishing the country a year later. The situation now is as bad, if not worse, than when the crisis began - with the big difference that we now have a vaccine and

can be confident that an end to our woes is in sight. However, the vaccine won’t have turned the tide before March 17 and I think it about time the Government announced that St Patrick’s Day events will be cancelled again. Even if the current Covid wave has been crushed by then, it would be very risky to let the full show go ahead and, any-

way, I doubt if all the arrangements and bookings could be made in so short a time. The best course would be to cancel - and announce plans for a Better Late Than Never St Patrick’s Day. It would be tempting fate to put a specific date on the event just yet, but Fáilte Ireland could pencil it in for late May or early June and confirm it as soon as possible.

The Better Late festival would not only salvage the St Patrick’s Day business but would be a great way to kickstart our tourist trade, bringing Ireland back with a bang. If it caught on, maybe we could stick with the new date. Let’s face it, mid-March is a terrible time to hold a big outdoor event in Ireland. How often have we seen majorettes

turning blue with cold, bandsmen bailing out rain from their instruments and elaborate floats destroyed by high winds? I don’t know what the Church would have to say about a move. But St Patrick’s Day has long ceased to be a religious event . It’s a time when all the world pretends to be Irish and a large part of it descends on this country for a bit of fun. That would go a lot more smoothly in May than in March - not just this year, but this year most certainly. For more than 50 years, Michael Wolsey has been writing columns and comment pieces for newspapers in Ireland and Britain and a collection of these has now been published by Amazon. ‘As I was Saying - Fifty Years of Comment from the Columns of Irish Newspapers’ is a wry look at changing times and issues that are sometimes serious, more often humorous. All proceeds from sales of the book will be donated to Nala, the National

WILDLIFE

with Justin Ivory

New Year, New Planet

Birdsong became more obvious during lockdown (Photo Justin Ivory, far left ) LAST year was a year unlike any other, a year we are all glad to see the back of. But as we head into 2021 and hopefully some light at the end of the pandemic tunnel, let us reflect on some of the positives from last year. In a world of calm and silence during lockdown nature and wildlife thrived. Birds could be heard singing louder and for longer, foxes and other secretive animals of the night were active during daylight hours as they were now free to move around with little or no disturbance. The public for the first time began to really notice the wonderful wildlife we live side-by-side with and they loved what they were seeing and hearing. What was there all along but for the most part went unnoticed. We have seen this evolve into biophilia on a scale not seen before. What is biophilia? Biophilia is a hypothesis first put forward by Edward O. Wilson which suggests that humans have an innate tendency to seek connections with nature and other forms of life. So, what does all this mean as we enter 2021? I will leave it to Sir David Attenborough from his New Year message: “Today we are experiencing environmental change as never before and the need to take action has never been more urgent. This could be a year for positive change for ourselves, for our planet and for the wonderful creatures with which we share it. A year the world could remember proudly and say we made a difference. As we make our New Year’s resolutions let’s think about what each of us could do. What positive changes could we make in our own lives. So, here’s to a brighter year ahead. Let’s make 2021 a Happy New Year for all the inhabitants of our perfect planet.”

the great irish farm book by Darragh McCullough

operation transformation 13th January, 9.35pm, RTE One

Did you know that there are almost 2,000,000 pigs in Ireland? And that sheep have rectangular pupils, which means they have amazing vision? Would you believe only 10% of the milk produced in Ireland is consumed here? These are all facts that you can share, courtesy of celebrity farmer and journalist, Darragh McCullough, who writes with an infectious passion. This wonderfully quirky book will appeal to nostalgic adults as well as curious children, with its wealth of information and charming delivery. Did you know, hens are pregnant for just 21 days?

IF you haven’t got off the couch by now, don’t despair, it’s early days in the 2021 outing for the Operation Transformation team and still time to get up and do a few press-ups. The lockdown is sure to make things difficult for most of us who were genuinely planning on running more than 5K away from our front doors in the new year. But no doubt, Catherine Thomas (pictured) and the OT team will find a way to wheedle and starve you into a thinner self by spring, even if that does mean working out in the wardrobe. Good luck!

BASED on the Jodi Picoult novel, this may not be one for the current situation we find ourselves in, but it’s still a wonderful if heartbreaking tale of Anna, a young girl, who seeks a lawyer’s help to earn medical emancipation from her parents when they force her to donate organs, blood and tissue to her leukaemia-stricken elder sister. Melodramatic at times, it does however treat the subject matter sensitively. Have the tissues ready and expect a barrage of questions on ethics from the kids.

10th Anniversary BRIAN GANLEY

6th Anniversary KEVIN MORRISSEY

In loving memory of Stella Kelly late of 46 Hawthorn Dr., Hillview who died 12th of January 2001.

- Love your brother Kicker. No special day is needed, For us to think of you, For you were someone special, And we thought the world of you, - Always remembered by Jane and Kyra 4th anniversary of Kevin Morrissey, late of 59 Farran Park and 31 Catherine’s Grange, who died on the 11th January 2015. We were honoured and privileged. To have you as a son, A kind and gentle person, A loving dad too, Your heart was always open, Your smile so warm and sweet, Your arms were full of love, You made us feel complete, A photo we treasure is all we can touch, Of a son we will love forever, And miss so very much. - From your heartbroken Mam and Dad xxx. Walk alongside me Daddy, And hold my little hand, I have so many things to learn, That I don’t yet understand, Teach me things to keep me safe, From dangers every day, Show me how to do my best, At home, at school, at play, Every child needs a gentle hand, To guide them on as they grow, So walk alongside me Daddy, We have a long way to go. - Missed today and always by your daughter Abbey Today’s the anniversary, Of the day that I lost you, And for a time it felt as though, My life had ended too, But loss has taught me many things, And now I face each day, With hope and happy memories, To help me on my way, And though I’m full of sadness, That you’re no longer here, Your influence still guides me, And I still feel you near, What we shared will never die, It lives within my heart, Bringing strength and comfort, While we are apart. - Always loved and sadly missed from Christina God saw you getting tired, When a cure was not to be, He closed his arms around you And whispered “come with me”. With tearful eyes we watched you, We watched you fade away, Although we loved you dearly, We could not make you stay, A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands at rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best. - Love your brother Mark and Mary xxx. Sadly gone but not forgotten, Not the same world when you’re not here. - Your loving niece Amie You went away so suddenly,

Precious memories hold you dear, As time unfolds another year, No longer in our lives to share, But in our hearts you are always there, If memories bring us closer, We are never far apart, For you are always with us, In our thoughts and in our hearts. - Sadly missed by Johanna and John When nights are cold, And stars are few, I close my eyes and think of you, A silent hope, a silent tear, A silent wish that you are near. - Thinking of you today and everday, love Eamonn and Louise and Darragh

In Heaven you rest, No worries or pain, In God’s own time, We will meet again. Simple words but very true, On this your anniversary. Loving memories of Brian, Airmount Villas who died 12th January 2011. Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us every day, Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed, still very dear. - Love Carmel, Brendan, Karen, Eamon, James, Audrey, Teddy, Heather and Amy.

10.4.19

How do you put words on paper, The feelings I have inside, The heartache and the emptiness, That is with me since you died, I don’t tell people anymore, Instead I cry a tear alone, Where no one else can see, They say that time will heal, But neither time nor reason, Will change the way I feel, So God forgive me if I weep, For the one I loved and wanted to keep. - Always remembered by your daughter Michelle, son-in-law, and loving grandchildren Dale, Aaron and Katie. In Loving Memory 9th Anniversary JASON MARSHALL

8th Anniversary Joseph Millea

sister Jane and niece Kyra

In loving memory of Jason Marshall who died on 15th January 2012. Do not stand at my grave, I am not there I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle Autumn rain, When you awaken in the morning hush, I am the soft uplifting rush, Of quiet birds in circled flight, Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I did not die. - Always loved and never forgotten by your brother John and sister Johanna You gave no-one a last farewell, Nor ever said goodbye, You were gone before we knew it, And only God knows why, A million times we cry, If love alone could have saved you, You never would have died. In life you were loved dearly, In death we love you still, In our hearts you hold a place, No one can fill. We will meet again someday, I know in a better place. - I thank God He made you my brother, missing you always,

Today is full of memories, Of a brother laid to rest, And every single one of them, Is filled with happiness, For you were someone special, Always such a joy to know, And there was so much pain, When it was time to let you go, That’s why this special message, Is sent to Heaven above, For the angels to take care of you, And give you all my love. - From your sister Louise and brother-in-law Eamon and Darragh Today we light some candles, And say a special prayer, We go down memory lane, And know that you are there, Our hearts are full of memories, With pride we speak your name, Though life goes on without you, It will never be the same. - Love from your sister Christina, niece Abbey and Shane As time unfolds another year, Memories keep you ever near, Silent thoughts of time together, Hold memories that will last forever. - Sadly missed your brother Stephen, partner Michelle, niece Arianna, & goddaughter Makayla A tribute of love , So close to our hearts, Each day of the year, We will always have memories, Of a wonderful son, To cherish and hold. - Missing you Jason forever, Dad and Mam

F.W. o holy st anthony Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore of you to obtain for me my request. The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so you are the saint of miracles. O gentle and loving St Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, intercede for me and whisper my prayer into the ear of the sweet Infant Jesus who loved to linger in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will be yours. D.G. Novena Prayer to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Remember, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, the great things the Lord has done for you; He chose you for His mother, He wanted you close to His cross, He gives you a share in His glory. He listens to your prayer. Offer Him our prayers of praise and thanksgiving. Present our petitions to Him. Share your petitions silently with Our Lady. Let us live like you in the love of your Son that His Kingdom may come. Lead all people to the source of living water that flows from His Heart, spreading over the world hope and salvation, justice, and peace. See our trust in you; answer our prayer. Show yourself always, our Mother. Amen. R.A.

58% hit by ‘lockdown loneliness’

Almost TWO-thirds of adults in the county have admitted to feeling isolated or lonely as the pandemic takes its toll on the nation’s mental health. The stark results of a survey by HaloCare shows 58% of us of all adult respondents (18+) said they “sometimes” or “often” feel down due to the impact of reduced social engagement. When posed with the same questions, almost half (45%) of elderly people aged 65+ nationally claimed they felt down due to the impact of reduced social engagement, while 56% say they have been left feeling isolated. However, showing that technology has helped so many of us overcome the hurdles of the pandemic, 78% of elderly

respondents said technology helped alleviate isolation and loneliness somewhat, by being able to engage online. Halocare is a new Carlowbased startup which aims to address the issues of isolation and loneliness in the elderly by using new software to focus on social interconnectivity via technology. The service is backed up by 24/7 live, ondemand medical professionals, who will check in regularly by phone with those requiring it. Some 37% of survey respondents have said that a daily call from experienced professionals would make them feel more secure in their homes. Commenting on the findings, Dr Johnny Walker, CoFounder & Clinical Director of

HaloCare, said: “We founded HaloCare based on what we were hearing on the ground – that is, that there is a large cohort of elderly people who are capable of living at home yet nevertheless need a little extra support to enable them to continue living independently. “From the onset of Covid-19 especially, these people were being overlooked when it came to maintaining regular contact with friends, family, and support services. The research results validate our findings and highlight the gap between those who are comfortable using technology, but have not recognised its capability to alleviate loneliness, isolation, and sense of security.”
