Halligan may not run for re-election

POLITICAL veteran John Halligan may not contest the General Election on February 8. The Waterford Independent TD and Minister of State is reported to be “seriously contemplating retirement”. A source close to the minister said he would he would reveal his decision soon. The local news website WaterfordNow.ie quoted the source as saying: “There is nothing official yet. He will meet with his election team during the week and discuss it with them first. There will make a statement later in the week one way or the other.” If Mr Halligan withdraws it will add further uncertainty to a very open contest in Waterford. Sitting Fine Gael TD John Deasy announced late last year that he would not be seeking re-election. His party and constituency rival, the senator and former junior minister Paudie Coffey, also announced his intention to step away from

politics. So Mary Butler (FF) and David Cullinane (SF) could be the only sitting deputies contesting the election here. Mr Halligan was first elected to the Dáil in 2011. He held his seat at the 2016 General Election, increasing his first preference votes by more than 50%. He was appointed Minister of State for Training and Skills As candidates prepare for battle, it is clear that health will be the major General Election issue in the Waterford constituency and a row has developed over public funding for beds in a private nursing home. Man found dead: son on charge of assault

A MAN has appeared in court charged with assault causing harm to his father who was found dead at his home in Portlaw. Stephen Butler (21), with an address at Ramsgrange, New Ross,was remanded in custody by Judge Terence Finn at a special sitting of the district court in Carrick-on-Suir . He will be back in court on Thursday, January 16. He is charged under Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Persons Act, with assault causing harm to his father John Butler, at Brown Street, Portlaw. The court was told that the State would be objecting to any bail application on the basis of the seriousness of the charge and the likelihood of a more serious charge. Solicitor Ken Cunningham told the court that he would not be making an application for bail and sought an adjournment until 16 January. Judge Finn granted the State application and remanded Mr Butler in custody .

THE installation of a second cath lab at University Hospital Waterford has moved a significant step nearer. Waterford council has granted planning permission for a twostorey extension to house the new facility and interviews are to take place soon for two addition cardiologists atthe hospital. Cllr. John Cummins hailed the developments as “an enormous step forward in our fight for 24/7 Cardiac Care at UHW.” A catheterisation laboratory allows hospitals to make crucial diagnosis of heart problems and Waterford has long campaigned for a second lab and a roundthe-clock service. “The news that the green light has been given for a second cardiac catheterisation laboratory on the grounds of University Hospital Waterford is hugely positive,” said Cllr Cummins, a Fine Gael general election candidate. “It has taken huge determination on behalf of campaign groups, the general public and politicians to get us to this point where planning has been granted for a second permanent laboratory. It is now imperative that the HSE is not allowed to

sit on their hands and that the tender documents for the works are published and a contractor appointed without delay and that is my focus in the weeks ahead”. The development will consist of a two storey extension to the existing hospital on an existing flat roof with accommodation including a Specialist Procedures Room, Preparation and Recovery Room, Diagnostic facilities and ancillary accommodation. Cllr Cummins said interviews would place on Wednesday 22 January for the recruitment of an additional two cardiologists at UHW . One of these positions will fill a recently vacated post and the second is a new post which will bring the staff compliment to four interventional cardiologists “With the fourth position in place, it is envisaged that this will enable the service to expand to an eight to eight, seven-day a week service subject to agreement with the relevant staff and the Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) Programme,” said Cllr Cummins.

Link plan would take Greenway to Tramore

WATERFORD council is drawing up plans for a greenway link to Tramore. Councillor Eamon Quinlan has been told that an application will be made to the Government to secure the required funding .

“While it is only at its preliminary stages, with years of work required across the board to deliver, it is seen by stakeholders as exceptionally positive that the council has now declared publically its

intentions,” said the Fianna Fáil councillor. Cllr Quinlan raised the greenway idea at last week’s meeting of Waterford City and County Council. He wants to take the Waterford Greenway out to Tramore and connect it to the Waterford to New Ross section of greenway that is currently under development in conjunction with Kilkenny and Wexford councils. “Waterford spent a lot of money on the Dungarvan to Waterford City Greenway,” he said. “We were led to believe we would be reimbursed by the Government. When millions of euro were announced by the Government for Greenways, it was only for ‘new’ Greenways. We lost out and placed other counties at a competitive advantage to catch up on us. “The solution here is to create a ‘new’Greenway to Tramore that links to the current Greenway. “A Tramore route would add significant value to the Greenway experience for tourists and provide a manageable trail that populations of the city and Tramore could avail of.”

Great or worst? Candidates clash over job figures GENERAL Election candidates have clashed over employment in Waterford. Fine Gael’s John Cummins claimed the city and county had been “a great benefactor of employment growth”. But Fianna Fáil’s Eddie Mulligan said Waterford had “the worst unemployment in the country”. The clash came as new data showed employment at foreign multinationals throughout the country increased by nearly 14,000 last year. In Waterford 7139 people are employed in companies backed by the IDA, an increase of 37%, and 6853 people are employed in companies backed by Enterprise Ireland, an increase of 24 per cent. Cllr Cummins welcomed the latest data. He said: “More people are now employed in companies supported by Enterprise Ireland than at any point in the 20-year history of the agency. Sixty-five per cent of total employment

by Enterprise Ireland backed companies is now outside of Dublin and as we can see from these figures Waterford has been a great benefactor of this employment growth with a 24% increase in EI client companies from 5537 in 2011 to 6853 in 2019. “This phenomenal increase since Fine Gael came to power and launched the Action Plan for Jobs is also reflected in IDA supported companies with a 37% increase since 2011. Employment has increased in IDA supported companies in Waterford from 5217 in 2011 to 7139 in 2019. 2 But Cllr Mulligan said Waterford had the worst unemployment in the country “and the third worst average wage increase.” He said CSO statistics showed there are 677 under 25s unemployed in Waterford city, Waterford’s under-25 unemployment is treble that of Galway and double the figure for Limerick, he said.

Time to turn junk into top fashion

SEC0NDARY school students in Waterford have a week left to register for the popular contest that recycles junk into fashion. Registration for the tenth Junk Kouture contest closes on January 20. New judge Michelle Visage – star of RuPaul’s Drag Race and Strictly Come Dancing - has urged all hopefuls to get in their designs. She will join Louis Walsh, teaming up to bring their expertise of the entertainment industry to the event and help choose the overall winner of Junk Kouture 2020 Last year, everything from burnt pieces of toast to bike tyres were used by imaginative entrants in their bid for Junk Kouture glory, so anything goes when it comes to a Junk Kouture creation. dracula It was always going to be interesting to see the manner in which the very well known story of Dracula was going to be switched up and brought to life in a way that would engage viewers in a totally new manner. The bones of the original Bram Stoker’s Dracula were there in this new adaptation - Jonathan Harker going to Transylvania, his meeting with Count Dracula, the introduction of the vampire killer Van Helsing and the final showdown, via Whitby, in London. But the way in which things were switched up were fresh and interesting. At least for the first two episodes of the trilogy. Count Dracula was more like a camp gangster than anything else, menacing but with a comedic undertone to almost everything he did. Jonathan Harker was quickly written out of the plot which was for the good. The best though was Van Helsing, who in this incarnation was Sister Agatha Van Helsing, a nun who explained her relationship to God as being like an old married couple who didn’t particularly like each other any more but stayed living together so as to have a roof over their heads. Sister Agatha sparked and fizzed, always asking the uncomfortable question in the most direct way. She really was a breath of fresh air. The problem was that when she wasn’t there everything felt flat and more than a little bit uninteresting. The idea to have the final episode set about 130 years from the sinking of the Demeter off the coast of Whitby might have seemed like a bright idea but it just didn’t work. Bringing so many new characters in at the last minute didn’t work and having Sister Agatha’s descendant speak in her voice for the last couple of minutes of Dracula’s life just showed how much the decision to bring the story into today’s age didn’t work. This was a clever adaptation of the Dracula story that had much going for it, great actors and genuinely creepy in parts but in the end it was just too clever by half to really succeed.

Out of the people who are invited onto the course only one or two will make it. A great show for the depths of winter, sitting at home, all comfortable and warm while those on the telly suffer.

Forecast points to year of wage and job growth

THE Irish economy will enjoy a good year with GDP growth expected to remain among the strongest in Europe at 3.2%. This is the key forecast in the EY-DKM Economic Advisory’s predictions for 2020. It says the outlook is slightly cooler than the two buoyant years Ireland has just enjoyed but “this is not entirely unwelcome as the pressures of fast growth are beginning to become more visible.” The predictions assume the avoidance of a no-deal Brexit in 2020 . Commenting on the outlook for 2020, Ronan Clinton, Managing Partner in Waterford for EY said: “Despite weakening global conditions, we believe the Irish economy is entering 2020 in rude health and expect domestic strength to continue. We predict the labour market

will slow only modestly as supply tightens and wage costs increase but with an expected 40,000 net jobs created and a 4% rise in tax receipts, we see a positive economic climate in what will be an election year. “The rate of job and wage growth should support a healthy 2.4% growth in consumer spending in 2020. “With the national savings ratio at a healthy level and confidence largely restored in the property markets, fears over Brexit and the global economy appear to be only having a modest effect on consumer behaviour.” The EY-DKM Economic Advisory predicts that employment will rise by 1.7%. “Consumer and government spending will boost domestic businesses and strong migration will allow firms to

keep recruiting,” said Ronan Clinton. The report predicts wage growth of 3.5% and consumer spending growth of 2.4%. “Despite signs of ebbing confidence in consumer surveys, the rate of job and wage growth should support a healthy 2.4% growth in consumer spending in 2020,” said Mr Clinton. “With the national savings ratio at a healthy level and confidence largely restored in the property markets, fears over Brexit and the global economy appear to be only having a modest effect on consumer behaviour.” The report predicts inflation of 1.6% with house prices rising by 3.2% It predicts net migration of 40,000 and a four per cent increase in tax receipts.

The end is nigh

anuary has always been somewhat of an ill omened month. It’s as if all of the bad news of December has been soaked up by the good cheer and festive spirit of Christmas and put into abeyance until it can be dumped out to join the deaths, the strife and assorted disasters that are common at this time of year. This is one of the darkest and coldest times of the year. It is not by coincidence that it is at this time of the year that people are planning their summer holidays to somewhere warm and sunny. Although we live in such an interconnected world and it has brought many benefits one of the other things it has brought it is bad news on a scale that we have never had to encounter before. While, of course, being informed is a good thing, when there is very little you can do about something that is happening on the other side of the world there is very little point in adding to the ever increasing levels of death and destruction that you have to deal with. It is not as if we don’t have enough problems here in Ireland to deal with. And very soon we will have another one. It is already clear that all of the political parties are gearing up for a the imminent General Election. At the time of going to print it had literally just been announced for Saturday Febaurry 8th. Some of it will depend on what happens in Britain with Brexit and also some of it will depend on what the relationship between Fine Gael and Fianna Fail will be. Ultimately it will be the Taoiseach’s decision but make no mistakes the end of the Government is nigh. For all that is wrong with Ireland, you can pick from at least any one of half a dozen issues to prove the point, there has been a level of stability for the last number of years. Following from the age of austerity as the country staggered from one crisis to another that has to be welcome. Now however we are supposedly going through a new ‘boom’ phase but for the majority of people in the country they might as well be living back in the times of austerity. Wages have not gone up, some maybe by a little, but the prices of goods and services that people need to live have gone up by a lot. It will be interesting to see what vision the political parties will offer to the voters and who will understand the mood of the electorate the most. We know that it will be either Fine Gael or Fianna Fail as the main partner in Government but will it be a coalition and who will back them? The end is nigh for this Government and the electorate should be looking to see what sort of country they want and who can best give it to them.

Waterford now Ireland’s ‘only affordable city’ WATERFORD city has been held up as an example of how urban Ireland should be developed. It is the only city in the country that is really affordable to live in, a conference was told. John Moran told the Lisney Outlook 2020 conference in Dublin that the city with the most affordable housing was Waterford . He said higher density neighbourhoods were needed if Ireland is to have any hope of catering for the projected increase of one million people by 2040. “I don’t think the penny has dropped that we will have an extra one million people in the next 20 years,” said Mr Moran, a former secretary-general of the Department of Finance, credited with being one of the architects of Ireland’s recov-

ery in the wake of the Troika bailout. This would require a “ramping up” of housebuilding to 7,000 to 8,000 units per annum, Mr Moran said. “Five, six, sevenstorey apartments is what we need to start thinking about, we don’t necessarily need 20-storeys,” he said. People were going to have to move on from their traditional notion of a house, he said and were also going to have to start thinking about moving away from cars. It was his “personal view” that “we have to talk about not having vehicles at all”, particularly in cities where there were alternate public transport options. “We shouldn’t have cars if we live in (the Dublin suburb of) Ranelagh,” he said. “If you live near a railway station, you don’t need a car.”

The Waterford SPCA has become the latest charity to benefit from Aldi’s Community Grants programme, receiving a €500 grant from Aldi’s ‘The Glen’, Waterford store team. The €500 grant was presented to Michelle Quinlivan and Tony Perkert from the Waterford SPCA by Lucija Kondrat Aldi ‘The Glen’ Waterford’s ‘Charity Champion’. Aldi’s Community Grants programme helps fund local charities and organisations that contribute vital work and services in their local communities. Each local charity supported is chosen by Aldi employees, enabling them to help the local good causes they are passionate about. Commenting, Robbie Kavanagh, Aldi ‘The Glen’, Waterford’s Store Manager said: “Our store team are proud to have chosen the Waterford SPCA for our Community Grants donation. The work they do to prevent animal cruelty and provide homes and care for abandoned animals makes a huge difference to Waterford.”

All change as the election looms

ometimes a new year is something that takes a while to adjust into. Christmas seems to hang around for a while longer than the official holiday period, and the year you’ve moved into feels like it’s stuck in first gear, moving forward at a sluggish pace. Not so with 2020, which is all the more impressive given that it is a new decade we have moved into as well. The abundance of big news items is no doubt the reason why 2020 is well into second gear already. First off have our own General Election on February 8 – with Leo hoping to ‘do a Boris’. Will the electors bring back Fine Gael or will Fianna Fail reclaim what they see as their rightful place at the head of Government? Can the Green continue their resurgence and Sinn Fein arrest their slide from the local elections? The horrific bush fires in

Harry and Meghan spinning themselves off from the House of Windsor. These are momentous times we live in and I’m not expecting the pace of events to slow down as we move through the year, and indeed the decade.

In particular, pressure for action on climate change must keep building until those with the power to effect change have no choice but to do our bidding. The aforementioned bush fires are a stark warning to us of the potential for catastrophe that an ever-warming planet will bring. The rush to get a trade deal between the EU and the UK before December will no doubt be headline news all year. The timeframe seems too narrow so something has to

give; perhaps Boris will have to eat humble pie and ask for an extension to the stand-still period. The Presidential election in the US will be big box office too – just what lengths will Trump go to ensure he gets a second term? Can the Democrats unseat him? I know I’m ready to consign him to history, he has been a huge disappointment for me. Aside from all the politics and world affairs that will unfold, 2020 looks set to be a busy sporting year. How will Ireland fare out in the Six Nations, post Joe Schmidt? Will we qualify for Euro 2020 in the soccer? We are one of the hosts of that tournament – a first for us – so we have that to look forward to even if we are not playing. It is an Olympic Games year too, with Tokyo the hosts this time out. For those who are coming straight from school to college, whether it's for a certificate, diploma or degree course, or for a Post Leaving Certificate choice can make the transition seamlessly enough from one to the other. However for people who have been out of a learning environment for some time, it can be a bit of an adjustment. For many people, making the important decision to go back to school is the easy part. Actually getting back into the swing of things and remembering how you managed your studies before can be a bit more challenging. Don’t beat yourself up if everything doesn’t instantly come flooding back on the first day. Just like it took you some time to ease into professional life, becoming a student again is a transition.

Think about your learning style Different people process information in different ways, so don’t panic if you can’t instantly recall all the information thrown at you in a class. This can be particularly overwhelming in the early days, so try to be prepared before you start. Some people like writing things out, some use visual imagery, and others read their notes aloud and record them on mobile devices. Find out more about different learning styles, identify yours, and stick to what works best for you. Use your resources Re-entering the academic environment with younger classmates can be intimidating. As a mature student, don’t let the fact that you may be older keep you from asking questions and admitting gaps in your own knowledge.

Going back to school as a responsible adult is a fantastic opportunity to do all those things you meant to do last time around. Read your course materials, take notes, and actually study those notes later. That’s what you’re here for, so remember to seize every available opportunity to learn and develop. Take it seriously Years of practical employment can make studying seem slightly self-indulgent, or not as important as “real” work. This will be particularly true if you’re studying part-time or have a family, but it’s crucial that you make your coursework a priority to get as much as possible out of your experience. Be sure that you’re scheduling in time for your studies, and although it’s bound to be hard, don’t let the other stuff get in the way of your routine.

very January we each get an opportunity to put our best foot forward as we start the New Year. And although many of us have tried, and maybe failed (maybe many times!), to reach certain goals and achieve certain resolutions, leaving us wondering why we even bother, what’s the alternative? Realistically ask yourself ... if not now, then when? If the momentum and group energy of the worldwide movement towards self-improvement at this time of year isn’t reason enough to tap in, and to harness some of that feel good factor, and can-do attitude, then how likely are you to try at any other time of the year, or even at all? We all know how a looming

wedding or holiday gives us the impetus to shed a few pounds, well, in much the same way, having a date to begin or finish a task, seems to make it easier to plan and achieve it. With today’s penchant for mindfulness and self care, we are seeing a different approach to new year resolutions. The old classics such as losing weight, quitting smoking, eating healthier and excercising more are still there, but a more holistic approach to tackling these issues is now coming to the fore. So whether it’s to stop smoking, lose weight, exercise more, go vegan or whatever your aim is, and regardless of how many false starts you may have already had, refocus, recommit and restart, as many times as it takes and give yourself the best chance to realise your dreams.

Welcome to part 3 of our Go Wild in 2020 series, as we continue our list of simple actions you can take to make your garden a wilder and more environmentally friendly place. 7. Install a Wildlife Pond Probably the best thing anybody can do for wildlife in their garden is to put in a pond. This does not have to be a major or costly project. Something as simple and small as a rectangular basin that would fit in your sink can make a perfect little pond submerged in the ground until level with the soil and filled with rainwater, some rocks and native aquatic plants. This will soon attract frogs, newts, dragonflies and damselflies, and provide water for birds to drink and bathe in.

We had 3 3-balls and two 4-balls and the front nine to ourselves and we all got back to the clubhouse safely, if somewhat wet and wind-beaten, on our first social golf outing of the new year and the first since December 11 would you believe! We introduced a new rule that each team member must have two drives each (tough for the 4-balls especially), which made things more challenging and more even we believe. The sun shone in West Waterford on Sunday afternoon as our new Captains Diarmuid Horgan, Lady Captain Phil Kelly and Junior Captain launched the 2020 season before a large crowd of members. On behalf of all the members I would like to wish all of them a successful year. Winter League: Round 2 of the Winter League finishes on next Sunday 19th January. The 3rd round sees the all important Matchplay matches get underway. The Draw is as follows: West Waterford vs Templemore, Castletroy vs Lahinch and East Cork vs Ballybunion. These matches must be played by the 2nd February. Aoife McGovern cleans up in 13 Hole: Aoife McGovern is one of the most consistent players in the Club . Playing off 25 she wone the Jean Conway sponsored competition with 28 points. The course was well tested by the wind and rain that arrived on Friday night and stayed through Saturday. Recent work on draining the fairways proved once again how invaluable the course staff are. This weekend saw the resumption of the winter league with the fourth round being played. Even with Saturday being a horrible day a total of 114 played in this round. Milne said “Golf is so popular because it is the best game in the world at which to be bad”. On a day like today only 7 people could win prizes but getting out in the sunshine without wind or rain wasn’t a bad consolation. Seniors The Christmas festivities well over we had our first outing of 2020 last Thursday. Despite a number of players being absent through injury and the raging flu virus, we had a great turnout of some 13 teams. Weather conditions were almost perfect calm, dry, overhead and underfoot. The cobwebs were well and truly dusted down as far as scoring was concerned and the high scoring pattern of 2019 continued unabated into 2020. Waterford Wildcats are through to both the U/18 and the U/20 National Cup finals after coming out on top in two tense semi finals this past weekend. Both teams are coached by International coach Tommy O’ Mahony who has already guided the Mercy Secondary U/16 and U/19 teams through to the schools Cup finals just days prior to the club Cup finals. A number of players are involved in both events so there’s a massive task ahead for coach O’ Mahony and his players over such a short time frame. All finals will be played in the National Basketball Arena, Tallaght, Dublin in the last week of this month. At 8pm last Friday night, Basketball Ireland’s festival of Cup semi finals at various age levels in both codes tipped off in the Neptune Stadium Cork City. The first game to get the event up and running involved Waterford Wildcats, the pride of the South East, and midlander Portlaoise Panthers who had 5 youth internationals in their line up. This Wildcats outfit who lost the U/18 Cup final by a single basket last season have all eyes on the big prize this year and their determination was obvious as they led by 16 points at

the half way stage and looked on track to achieve their goal. However, this Panthers side include a number of amazing shooters and those same hot shots cut the deficit to just 8 points midway through the third quarter as Wildcats found scores hard to come by. Debbie Ogayemi made two from two on the line to steady the ship leaving Wildcats 10 to the good with the final quarter to play. Now it was a matter of some solid defence from Wildcats and a couple of baskets to get the job done but Portlaoise had other ideas as they blitzed the Wildcats net with 4 three pointers in succession while Wildcats responded with a single three pointer. Two more of the same from the opposition making it six three pointers in the later minutes leaving Wildcats leading by the minimum and unlikely to hold on. But this Wildcats team have faced similar situations in the past and the experience stood to them as they held out to hit the final points of the game which gives them a place in the National Cup U/20 final at the end of January. Final score Wildcats 81, Portlaoise Panthers 77. Wildcats will face the pick of Ulster in the shape of UU Tigers after

they proved 8 points too good for Dublin’s Templeogue in the other semi final. While every Wildcats player gave the best of themselves there were some outstanding performances. Top three scorers were Debbie Ogayemi who played with a broken finger strapped up and contributed 13 points while the always reliable point guard Abbey Flynn notched up 17 and Kate Hickey who had her finest game in a Wildcats shirt finishing as the games top scorer with 26 points. SUPER LEAGUE This Saturday Wildcats focus on the Super League with a home game v table toppers DCU who must be reeling after their shock Cup semi final defeat to Corks Brunell BC. Wildcats are in joint second place after some good results recently. This is as tough a game as they will face but home advantage may prove crucial in what is sure to tense affair. A a win for Wildcats would put the cat among the pigeons. A full house is expected at the Mercy Sports Hall with the tip off at 7pm .
