€100 for everyone as fuel bills rocket EACH household in Waterford will get €100 deducted automatically from their electricity bill in a one-off scheme by the Government to try and ease the financial burden of rising energy prices. The total cost is estimated to come in at €170m. The credit will cover the first two months of next year and will be deducted from household bills in February or March and will not be means-tested. According to figures released by the Central Statistics Office, electricity, gas and other fuels are up 29% on an annual basis. Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe said the Government is working on a number of options to try to ease the burden of rising living and energy costs for people. “What’s really important is that we can do something that is fast,” he said. Mr Donohoe said targeted measures, including changes in the tax and the social welfare system, have been made to assist people with rising costs all year long.

He said resources are concentrated where they are needed most, but that the price of energy is one issue that will affect everyone. However, Social Justice Ireland (SJI) claimed the move was largely symbolic, as hardpressed households were faced with growing cost of living expenses all round. SJI’s Michelle Murphy said: “€100 on an electricity bill is a gimmick when you consider a year of price increases with no corresponding increases in welfare,” she said. “For those in arrears, €100 means next to nothing.” In response, Taoiseach Micheal Martin said the Government was very conscious of rising bills, and that the €100 was “a bit more help” to hard-pressed families. “We’ve already taken measures in the budget,” he said. “We are very conscious that we are going into a period of significant inflation in energy prices — not just in Ireland, but globally,” he added.

news in brief Council to review halting site plans Waterford Council will rework plans for a halting site “in the shortest time frame possible” following its refusal by councillors recently. The proposed Traveller accommodation in Waterford city was rejected by local politicians — the third time it has been voted down — despite the High Court quashing a previous decision by councillors not to go ahead with the accommodation. Waterford Council’s executive said it would now look for meetings with councillors, Traveller accommodation representatives and local residents to discuss the project in the new year.

US firm to bring 250 jobs to Waterford city centre

Waterford Fine Gael Senator, John Cummins, has praised the “positive work” required to bring 250 new jobs to Waterford. Infosys, a New York Stock Exchange listed company is planning a state-of-the-art delivery centre in Waterford City. The new centre will provide voice support, customer service and technical support operations for large global enterprises. The new roles will cover several functions across various job levels, spanning a multitude of skills from customer and technical support roles to finance, HR, planning, and capacity management. Mr Cummins said: “It is fantastic to see another IDA jobs announcement for Waterford on the back of recent announcements by Bauch and Lomb, Repligen, Horizon Therapeutics and Tegus. Today’s announcement brings to 660 the number of IDAbacked jobs that have been created in the past five months and they are a further vote of confidence in Waterford as an attractive location for inward investment. “I want to personally wish the company every success as they grow and expand their team in Waterford. He added: “I have been working closely with Tanaiste and

Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Leo Varadkar to emphasise the importance of job creation in Waterford and the wider South East region. Since Fine Gael came into government, we have seen the continued upward trend of IDA supported employment in Waterford. “Job numbers have increased by over 50% from 5217 in 2011 to 7875 at the end of 2020 and this trend has continued throughout 2021. “What is especially great about this announcement is the location of the jobs, right in the heart of the city centre at Railway Square. I have to acknowledge the positive work that has been ongoing in recent times to improve and populate this area. “These 250 new roles will not only benefit Railway Square, but it will also undoubtedly result in a very positive spinoff for the entire city centre, he said. Mr Varadkar was also delighted with the decision by Infosys to expand in the region. “This is a great boost for the South East and demonstrates the attractiveness of Ireland as a location for investment from leading companies from around the world,” he said. “The best of luck to the team, I trust you will be very happy in Waterford.”

Dreaming of a greener ‘conscious’ Christmas WHILE people have traditionally hoped for a ‘white’ Christmas, here in Waterford, the theme this year is for a ‘green’ Christmas. Spearheaded by Brian Gormally, founder of Sherpa Events and VIPSanta, the ethos being promoted at this year’s Santa spectacular, at the Old Postal Sorting Office on the Quay, is one of sustainability Not only has Brian and his team dressed the venue in leafy greenery and festive decorations, the interior is illuminated with low-level LED lighting to give the grotto a warm, festive feel. Brian’s journey into the events world started with Body&Soul Festival, Ireland’s most pioneering and progressive festival when it comes to creativity, innovation and sustainability. Inspired by their green sustainable spirit, he has continued to implement these principles into all of Sherpa’s corporate and public offerings. And for the first time, Winterval’s Santa Experience

Sky’s the limit for fireworks display

Visual Arts, Experimental Music, Jazz, Trad, Rock, Poetry, and Story-telling are among the specially curated events taking place across Waterford in the lead-up to Christmas, culminating with a spectacular Sky Firedance fireworks display on December 21st. The twin goals of the Waterford Winter Firedance are to give as many people as possible the chance to get out, be entertained and celebrate in a safe fashion as well as to employ the professionals who were hit especially badly over the past two years. While there are a variety of events taking place on the evening of the winter solstice, the finale, which will be visible all over Waterford, is the fireworks display, which will last all of seven minutes, making it Ireland’s biggest fireworks extravaganza this side of the millennium. The Sky Firedance fireworks display will be launched at 9pm sharp. So pick your spot. For full information on other events: www.waterfordarts.com

Don’t trust your gut: Call for use a thermometer budding

business students

Chef Gareth Mullins recommends using a thermometer for safe cooking this Christmas. AS we get closer to the big day, new research has emerged showing ownership of meat thermometers is increasing — but over three-quarters of people (78%) are not aware of the correct temperature to which turkey should be cooked to. To help Ireland cook their turkeys the right way this festive season, safefood is launching its ‘Trust the Meat Thermometer’ campaign to encourage people to use a meat thermometer when cooking turkey, poultry or any meat product that needs to be cooked all the way through. Gareth Mullins, chef and Safefood’s campaign ambassador, explains more about cooking Christmas

dinner, heating up leftovers and preventing food waste. Take your turkey out of the oven and pop the thermometer in the thickest part between the leg and breast, he says. When it reaches 75 degrees Celsius it’s cooked and ready to eat. For poultry, like turkey and chicken and other meats that need to be cooked through, it is important they are cooked until piping hot, with no pink meat and juices running clear. And when it comes to leftovers, Gareth says any food standing at room temperature for more than two hours is high risk and has the potential to make you, your family and friends sick.

Barra: The Tempest or just a storm in an RTÉ cup?

R

TÉ’s newsroom loves a good storm. They have all their r e g i o n a l correspondents out, looking at empty streets or wind-blown beaches and trying, like Dickens’s Fat Boy, to make our flesh creep. The station was derided for its hysterical coverage of Storm Lorenzo, two years ago, when its reporters across the land spent 24 hours warning that Armageddon was approaching and the next 24 telling us that, really, nothing much had happened. That experience didn’t chasten the storm petrels of Montrose. They have been in rehearsal with every small weather event since and they put the whole show on the road for Storm Barra. It was a costume drama, with

Michael Wolsey

intrepid reporters out in padded jackets, hats, scarves, gloves and, in one case, goggles. They predicted a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions. But Storm Barra was not The Tempest, more Much Ado About Nothing. Yes, there was some flooding,

which was unpleasant for the people caught in it, and powercuts, which caused disruption in several areas. And there were, as always when the weather turns bad, sad stories of individual tragedies. But overall, Storm Barra brought nothing unpredictable for Ireland in December, just a couple of wet and windy days. Even the determined newshounds of RTE had difficulty trying to present it as anything more than a storm in a tea cup. Radio had a reporter on Dun Laoghaire pier whose main revelation was that a rainbow had been seen in the sky over Dublin. Biblical legend has it that a rainbow was shown to Noah as a sign that the Great Flood was over. Even RTE would not go so far as to make that comparison. Its man in Dun Laoghaire confined himself to the cryptic

observation that in one direction he could see dark clouds over Bray and, in the other, blue skies above Malahide - a contrast that could as easily be observed in June as in December. The BBC was much less excited about Storm Barra, confining it to a minor slot on most of its bulletins. But it delivered a discussion in which a dubious link was made between Barra and the wider problems of global warming and climate change. It is tempting to conflate the issues but the link cannot be proven. No matter how bad the weather may be, records nearly always reveal a time when it was worse. And in many cases that time was long before Arctic ice had shown the slightest sign of melting or any problem had been detected with the rain forests. Carbon emissions may have

encouraged Storms Barra and Lorenzo. But were they also to blame for Hurricane Charlie that crashed like a wrecking ball through much of the country in 1986, bringing death and destruction? Maybe they were. But what about Hurricane Debbie, in 1961, which ripped up trees, knocked down walls and killed 18 people in Ireland? Nobody had even heard of global warming back then. Nor is it likely that the burning of fossil fuels contributed to Ireland’s most infamous storm on the Night of the Big Wind. That cyclone, which came blasting in on January 6, 1839, left hundreds dead and thousands homeless. It blew down the chimney of Kilkenny’s new gas works and leveled all the buildings nearby. And it is hard to see how human activity can be blamed

for the savage weather in the 1740s. It was a period when unprecedented amounts of rain were accompanied by storms and extreme frosts. In Ireland it led to a famine that is estimated to have killed almost 40% of the population, a proportionately bigger disaster than the Great Famine a century later. Don’t get me wrong. I think we should stop polluting our planet with plastic. I think we should stop poisoning the atmosphere with carbon fumes. And I think we should reduce our reliance on fossil fuels which, other considerations apart, will eventually be used up. All these actions are very desirable but I am not sure that they will reverse the course of climate change, because the climate has always been changing. They certainly won’t bring an end to storms - or alarmist reporting from RTÉ.

All Department offices, including Intreo Centres, will be closed on Monday 27 December, Tuesday 28 December and Monday 3 January.

The Holly and the Ivy

Holly “The holly and the ivy, Now both are full well grown. Of all the trees that are in the wood, The holly bears the crown.” We are familiar with the Christmas Carol but maybe less so with the association of these plants, in particular the holly, with winter festivals and especially with Christmas. Holly, ivy and other evergreen plants such as mistletoe were used in pre-Christian times by druids to help celebrate the Winter Solstice. The holly was believed to represent masculine power and is the King of the winter months, ivy representing feminine power, is the Queen. One old tradition maintains that whichever of the two plants is brought into the house first over winter would determine whether the man or woman of the house would rule that year. But another tradition says it is unlucky to bring either into the house before Christmas Eve.

Ivy Given that the holly is so verdant during the austerity of winter and appears impervious to harsh weather, disease or infestation, it is not surprising that the Ancient Romans believed holly could repel all kinds of malice such as natural disasters, dark magic and vicious animals. Druids believed holly attracted good spirits and offered protection against evil spirits, and so, often wore it in their hair during religious rituals. Now back to the association of holly and ivy with Christmas. In the carol holly (male) represents Jesus while ivy (female) represents Mary. The prickly leaves of the holly represent the crown of thorns that Jesus wore when he was crucified and the red berries represent the drops of blood that he shed. In Scandinavia holly is known as the Christ Thorn. In Germany it was believed that tying a piece of ivy to the outside of a church would protect it from lightning!

Based on original research and over a hundred interviews with cabinet members, public health officials, frontline workers, and ordinary people on whom the crisis exacted a personal toll, A State of Emergency is the untold story of Ireland’s response to the biggest public health emergency of the past century. Hailed as a landmark work of journalism and a riveting insider account of the struggle that well still be raging for some time to come.

IN West Side Story, Spielberg takes on his first project in the musical genre. The remake brings the classic musical numbers into fresh light, elevating them to another level and bringing the tensions between two rival street gangs in 1950s New York into sharp focus for contemporary viewers. Whether we need a remake of this masterpiece is a valid question, having won 10 Oscars, the 1957 Broadway musical hit remains a much-loved and much-watched classic that would remain forever timeless. Still, it is Spielberg and this is a cinematic treat.

Goat Island’ by Donna McGee

Art makes UHW “A Better Place”

Artist Donna McGee has been selected as this year’s A Better Place artist at University Hospital Waterford (UHW). Donna’s solo exhibition at UHW runs until mid-February 2022. The A Better Place exhibition, which aims to make the hospital ‘a better place’ for all, is managed by Waterford Healing Arts Trust (WHAT). Further details are available from www. waterfordhealingarts.com Now in its sixth year, A Better Place has been a consistently popular exhibition among staff, patients and visitors to UHW,

humanising the clinical space and helping to alleviate stress and worry. Any visual artist can submit two samples of their work for consideration. Voting is anonymous, with each artwork identified by a number, rather than the artist’s name. Previous winners include artists Anne McLeod (2020), Deirdre Dunne (2019), Sinead Hehir (2018), Barry Edwards (2017) and Gemma Hodge (2016). This year, submissions were received from 55 artists, with Donna McGee receiving the highest number of votes. Donna is a self-taught artist who has been working from

her studio in Dublin for over 20 years. Observing and capturing the restless elemental forces of the Irish landscape, and celebrating its timeless beauty, are central to her work. On hearing she had been selected for A Better Place, Donna said “I am very honoured to have the opportunity to exhibit my paintings at UHW. It is important to me that my work as an artist is uplifting and inspirational to viewers. It’s my hope that my paintings deliver some lightness and release.” www.artsandhealth.ie

The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so you are the saint of miracles. O gentle and loving St Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, intercede for me and whisper my prayer into the ear of the sweet Infant Jesus who loved to linger in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will be yours. CD

Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Take it Dear Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart, where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. J.P.

17th and 35th Anniversaries KITTY AND EDWARD CULLETON

In loving memory of Kitty and Edward Culleton late of 159 Hennessy’s Road, Waterford, Kitty who died 19th of December 2004 and Edward who died January 10th 1987. RIP. Life is not measured By the years you lived, But by the love you both gave And the kind of things you did, Loving smiles, hearts of gold, These are the memories we dearly hold, We never part from those we love, No distance can divide For everyday along life’s way We still walk side by side, Just a prayer from the family Who loved you, Just a memory fond and true In our hearts you will live forever Because we thought the world of you. - Loved and always remembered by your son, daughters & grandchildren and great grandchildren Eva & Nathan Grandparents, Softly the leaves of memories fall, Gently we stoop and gather them all, Unseen, unheard, yet always near, Still loved, still missed, Still very dear, We remember the smiles We would love to see, And the hands we would love to touch, We remember your voice We would like to hear And our Grandparents we miss so much, So rest in peace dear Nanny and Grandad And thanks for all you’ve done, We pray that God has given you both, The crown you truly won. - Always in our thoughts from your grandchildren Jeanette, Caitriona, Richard, daughterinlaw Mary and great grandchildren Conor, Chloe, Adam Jamie & Dillon

2nd Anniversary Gerry McCarthy

In loving memory of Gerry McCarthy, Tramore whose 2nd Anniversary will be on 18th December. Anniversary Mass will be offered 28th December at 10am in Holy Cross Tramore. Always loved and never forgotten - From your wife Eleanor, granndchildren Jordan, Ciara, Niall, Shauna, Aoibhinn, Gearoid, Fionn, Gerard and Xavier. Dad Although we smile and make no fuss No one misses you more than us And when old times we do recall That’s when we miss you most of all - Missing you Dad, Sinead, Roisin, Gearoid and Niamh
