‘A massive win for Waterford hurling’ B a l ly g u n n e r ’ s historic AIB All-Ireland Club Hurling final win has been hailed as a ‘massive’ moment for hurling in the county. Substitute Harry Ruddle wrote his name into the history books after his last-gasp goal secured the title for Ballygunner against Ballyhale Shamrocks at Croke Park. Brought on after 53 minutes, Ruddle drove through the Ballyhale’s defence in the fourth minute of injury time and slotted into the bottom left corner of the net. Ballygunner were two points behind and Ballyhale appeared set to become the first club to win three All-Ireland club hurling titles in a row. Ruddle’s strike put them one point in front before the referee blew for full time moments later, making his team the first from Waterford to win the title. Meanwhile, former Tipperary star Shane McGrath told RTÉ the triumph will have a “massive” knock-on effect for

Mayor collects tourism top gong for Greenway Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr Joe Kelly and Johnny Brunnock of Waterford City and County Council

Go-ahead for detox centre A Dublin-based religious group has received planning for a female-only postdetoxification treatment centre in west Waterford. Waterford Council granted permission to the Refuge of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (RIHM) to convert a dormer bungalow into a residential care centre, a three-bed dwelling for nuns, an oratory, and Covid-19 isolation unit, on a six-acre site near Clashmore. The RIHM is a collective of individuals from several Catholic organisations and th project has been endorsed by Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan.

This year got off to a promising start as Waterford Greenway added to its trophy cabinet when the 46km walking and cycling trail was named as winner of the ‘Best Visitor Attraction’ in the Irish Independent 2022 Reader Travel Awards. Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr Joe Kelly was delighted to accept the award recently. “What’s particularly special about this award is that it was made on behalf of the

Irish Independent readers who have visited Waterford Greenway. “With their experiences so positive and their feedback so affirming, the Council’s Greenway team, local communities, and stakeholders can take great pride in what they have created in Waterford.” Pól Ó Conghaile, Travel Editor Irish Independent said, “I look forward to the Irish Independent’s Reader Travel Awards because they

provide us with priceless, real-world insights from holidaymakers on the ground. “This year, it was no surprise to me to see the Waterford Greenway top the nominations for ‘Ireland’s Best Visitor Attraction’.” The old railway line from Waterford City to Dungarvan is a spectacular 46km offroad cycling and walking trail which travels through nature crossing eleven bridges, three impressive viaducts and an atmospheric tunnel.

Massive win for Deise Continued from front page:

Meanwhile, Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr Joe Kelly has congratulated Ballygunner Hurling Team on their historic All-Ireland win. “It is a great achievement to win a county senior hurling title and then the Munster title, but to go on and win an AllIreland club title is absolutely fantastic,” he said. “The whole club has done Waterford City and County proud, and we are extremely grateful to you all. “It isn’t every day that a player gets to play in a stadium such as Croke Park, and it was a huge honour for all of the Ballygunner team. It must give the whole team and club a great boost to know that they beat Ballyhale, a high-quality team that has dominated the club hurling scene in recent years. “I wish everyone connected with Ballygunner Hurling Club the very best for the rest of 2022 and into the future, and again I must congratulate you for representing the City and County so well on a national stage.”

€1191

That’s the average rent in City now

Rents in Waterford City have risen by 11.3% in the last year and the average rent is now €1191. In the rest of Waterford, rents were on average 13.2% higher in the final quarter of 2021 than a year previously. The average listed rent is now €1178, up 104% from its lowest point. “This is a phenomenal increase and is a massive additional cost for workers and families to bear; on top of rapid increases in household bills,” Sinn Fein TD David Cullinane said following the release of the report. Nationwide rents in the final quarter of 2021 were an average of 10.3% higher than the same period in 2020, according to the latest Rental Report by daft.ie. The average monthly rent nationwide between October and December was €1,524, up 3% on the first quarter and double the low of €765 per month seen in late 2011. The sharp increase in rents around the country reflects a worsening of the unprecedented scarcity of rental homes. Nationwide, there were just 1,397 homes available to rent on February 1, a new all-time low in a series that extends back over 15 years to January 2006. The recent fall in homes to rent reflects a further tightening of supply in Dublin, where

just 712 homes were available to rent on February 1, less than one quarter of the average seen for February over the last two decades. Outside Dublin, supply improved marginally between November and February but with just 685 homes to rent, availability is less than one third of the pre-pandemic level of February 2020 and one twentieth the level seen a decade ago. Regional trends in rents point to a readjustment in rental demand. While rents in Munster, outside its three main cities, had seen some of the strongest growth in recent quarters, Dublin is now seeing the fastest percentage growth in the country. Rents in the capital rose by 4.1% between September and December, compared to just 0.5% in Munster – a reversal of the situation in the second and third quarters of the year. Commenting on the report, Ronan Lyons, Associate Professor of Economics at Trinity College Dublin and author of the Daft Report, said: “The strong rebound in economic activity, as public health restrictions relax, has translated into a strong demand for rental accommodation. Coming at a time of very weak rental supply, this has pushed rents up further, with inflation at its highest rate nationwide since early 2018.”

‘€505m will help with cost of living’ Waterford Minister Mary Butler has welcomed a range of measures announced by Government as part of a half a billion package to mitigate the cost of living. “The sharp rise of inflation and the increase in consumer prices in recent months, especially the increase in fuel and other energy prices is being felt by many people in Waterford and throughout

the country,” the Fianna Fail TD said. “A temporary 20% reduction in public transport fares will apply from April until the end of the year. “A lump sum payment of €125 on the fuel allowance will be paid in early March to 390,000 recipients. “We’re reducing the cost of the Drug Payment Scheme from a €144 to €80, benefiting over 70,000 recipients.”

Feed the birds to kill pests

Gardening enthusiasts and vegetable growers in Waterford are being encouraged to feed their local bird populations over the coming months to ensure they are around in summer to play a vital role in pest control. Bird expert Patrick Croke says that several common bird species are invaluable for eating the kinds of caterpillars, moths and larvae that can ruin a gardener’s year. “For gardeners and farmers, birds are helpers, not pests – in fact, they play an important role in balancing the local ecosystem,” said the Technical Officer with Connecting to Nature, a new Irish company that specialises in all-year-round bird food and wild flower seed. “When insect populations rise in summer time, birds swoop in like the cavalry and feast on them,” said Patrick. “In fact according to the Smithsonian’s Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, birds reduce the pest insect population by almost 30% – and can significantly reduce the need for insecticide, which can only be a good thing. Coast cleaners want us to break up with plastic

Valentine’s Day is a time to reflect and appreciate the relationships in our lives. However, it can also be a time to reflect on our relationship to things that may not be benefitting us or our environment. Such as single-use plastic. Waterford-based Clean Coasts group Tramore Eco-Group have been tackling plastic pollution on their local beach for a number of years. Through their social media channels, the group has been trying to also raise awareness about the quantity of plastic found on our coast. The group has been finding plastic bottles, wrappers and packaging, wipes, cigarette butts and plastic toys, including some retro rubbish that dates back to up to 20 years ago. The aim of the group is to highlight how plastic never dies and can take hundreds of years to biodegrade. These plastic items can harm marine life, as they can get entangled in plastic items

Some of the waste collected from Waterford beaches recently

or ingest them. As a group, reducing plastic has been top of their agenda for five years now. “We contacted our Council and asked to have bins put in just for plastic bottles. We were given two that we placed at each end of the promenade here in Tramore and these are collected daily by our Council, and the

bottles are sent for recycling. There was such interest in these bins the Council had more made for the Waterford Greenway and Waterford City.” said Ann Nolan, a representative of the group. Join the campaign on social media @CleanCoasts and at www.cleancoasts.org.

Quish’s win big at grocery awards

Stephen Bergin, Cormac Quish, Colm O’Carroll, Niall Shanaghy and Aidan Bourke Quish’s are no strangers to winning awards and have once again flown the flag for Waterford at the National Grocery Awards by winning the Irelands Best In-Store Off Licence and being finalists in Irelands Retail Store of the Year and Irelands Best Fruit & Vegetable Offering. “We have always pushed for excellence in everything we do in Tramore, we are proud to be trading in the heart of Tramore for over 25 years, “Cormac Quish said, “and supporting the local community through our sponsorship of Tramore GAA, Tramore AFC and of course

Tramore Tidy Towns who themselves won a silver medal at the National Tidy Towns Awards, these new National Grocery Awards are highly competitive with entries from across the country from all the big national retailers and we are delighted for all the team in Tramore to once again be winning on the national stage.” The new awards scheme is an amalgam of Ireland’s premier awards for fresh food retailing, the Checkout Best in Fresh awards, and the leading awards for suppliers to the industry, the Checkout National Retail Supplier awards.

€4,789,731 allocated to 65 sports local clubs Fine Gael Senator John Cummins has welcomed the news that 65 Waterford Sports clubs and organisations have been awarded a total of €4,789,731 in funding under the latest round of the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme. “This funding is in addition to the Waterford sports clubs that were successful under the equipment only element of the programme which was announced lastAugust,” h said. “At that time €281,318 was allocated 23 clubs across Waterford. “As someone who is a qualified Physical Education teacher and someone who has been involved in many sporting organisations across Waterford, I fully understand the value of sport and physical activity for all our citizens, particularly our younger ones. “Every piece of research shows that physical activity is good for our mental and physical wellbeing and that is why grants like these to such a wide array of sporting organisations is so welcome.”

Sad, funny and soulful - but it’s just not Belfast

L

ike Kenneth Branagh, Belfast is my native city. Like Branagh, I was living there in 1969 when the Troubles began and, like Branagh, I left shortly after. Like Branagh, I was raised in the Protestant community. But my memory of the city in the late 1960s is very different from the one displayed in his loosely autobiographical film, Belfast . The movie, which has been nominated for seven Oscars, was shot in black and white but the film-maker must have been looking through rose-tinted glasses. Branagh was, of course, creating entertainment, not a documentary. Even so, some of the scenes are jarringly inaccurate. Nobody danced between the barricades on Belfast’s terraced streets and the watch was not

Michael Wolsey

kept by comatose old men who woke from their naps to exchange a few pleasantries with the neighbours. The barricades were ten-feet high, built across the entrance to Catholic streets because Protestants from the other side of the main road were trying to burn “the fenians” out of house and home. Too late for Bombay Street.

It had already been destroyed by a rampage similar, but much worse, than the one which opens Branagh’s film. It’s not clear who is rioting on Branagh’s fictional street but I know who attacked Bombay Street. It was loyalists from across the Shankill, helped by B Specials out of uniform and abetted by some RUC officers in uniform. So no, nobody was dancing between the barricades. And nobody was dancing to a jazz band in a local hall after a funeral. Not a Protestant funeral, or any other sort of funeral for that matter. You’d have been hard put to find a jazz band in Belfast in the 1960s, never mind hire one to entertain mourners. Buddy, the character who represents nine-year-old Branagh in the film, has a primary school infatuation for a girl and fears he may never get to marry her because she is a Catholic.

In the Belfast of 1969 that would not have been a problem because they would never have been at the same school in the first place. Even today, the situation is unlikely. There is some integrated education in posh Belfast suburbs like Malone and Stranmillis. But on loyalist Sandy Row, say, or what remains of the Shankill, a modern Buddy is as likely to be sharing a classroom with a child from the royal family as he is with a nine-year-old Catholic. All the characters in Belfast, the movie, sound like they would be at home in Stranmillis or Malone, except Judi Dench, whose Irish accent seems to have been shaped a bit further south. The others are all rather well-spoken, not polite English like Kenneth Branagh, but polite Belfast. That’s understandable - which is more than can be said for the

real accent. Working class Belfast speaks a language that the stranger does not know, difficult for an audience in Holywood, Co Down, never mind Hollywood, California. Does any of this really matter? Maybe not. Not for most film critics and cinema audiences and not, I hope, for the Academy Award judges. The city where I grew up - the grey, divided city of smokey bars, gospel halls, dole queues and beaten dockets - was not short of character and characters, of grit, humour and courage. It was a city with a story, but not the sort of story that gets nominated for seven Oscars. Kenneth Branach did once feature in a screen drama that reflected the real Belfast of the 1970s. He played the teenager, Billy, in a trilogy of plays written for the BBC by Graham Reid. The Troubles were the background, but not a major

part of the story, which was set around a dysfunctional Protestant family in a loyalist area. Like Branagh’s new Belfast it was sometimes funny and could at times be very touching. But it was also dirty, steeped in drink and with violence - personal, not paramilitary - always simmering and sometimes exploding. Now that Branagh has put the city back on the world stage it would be good if the BBC would show the trilogy again. Firstly because they were great plays but, also, to provide a bit of balance. I hope Branagh’s movie wins Oscars. He has made a lovely film that tugs at the heartstrings. The acting is great and the family he puts on screen has charm, warmth and humour along with normal human weaknesses. Van Morrison’s soulful music makes a brilliant soundtrack. It’s great stuff. But it’s not Belfast.

Love and lust in the shallows

book of the week

with Justin Ivory

Common Frog (Pic: Justin Ivory) With Valentine’s Day just gone, it is not just humans that are getting all loved up with spring in the air. In the world of Irish amphibians, love and lust is rampant in the shallows and at its peak during February and March. First up is the Common Frog (Rana temporaria), the most familiar of our three amphibian species. They are so highly variable in colour that to the untrained eye it appears like we have many different species, but they are all Common Frog. They can range from yellowish green, olive-brown to shades of red, and almost black. Contrary to popular belief, frogs spend most of their lives on land only returning to water to breed in late winter and early spring. Females will typically lay 1000 to 4000 eggs which are fertilised by the males. The eggs are protected by a jelly-like substance and laid in clumps forming the well familiar spawn. When the frogs are cooling down after all their ardour, it is the turn of our only newt species, the Smooth Newt (Lissotriton vulgari) to take up the love reins. Just like the Common Frog, the Smooth Newt is mainly terrestrial only returning to water bodies to breed, typically from late February to early April (but can go on until June). At this time of year male newts develop a dorsal crest, a bright orange underside and their hind feet become more webbed. Then like John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever they take to their watery dancefloor to bust their moves in a courtship dance to try and impress the females! Female newts lay up to 300 eggs individually, wrapping each one in the leaf of an aquatic plant. Our third amphibian species in Ireland is the Natterjack Toad (Epidalea clamita) but this only occurs in a few locations in Kerry and Donegal.

And for those among us whose connections not only with our language but with our rich and diverse ancient past have been severed, this is an eye-opening read. Magan does not set out to expose people’s ignorance — though again, he does that rather well — but rather tries to rekindle a passion for our language and heritage and in the hopes that we fall in love with it once more. And this he does rather well too. A book bristling with an eccentric infatuation that is impossible not to admire.

RTÉ’s Home of the Year is back for a new series and with a new judge on board. This year returning judges, architect and founding partner of Douglas Wallace Consultants, Hugh Wallace and award winning architect Amanda Bone are joined by new judge, award winning interior designer Sara Cosgrove. The three judges will each score the homes out of 10 and the home with the highest combined score in each programme will go through to the final in April, where the winner will be crowned.

That “Death on the Nile” is a more satisfying mystery in almost every respect (and the best Kenneth Branagh movie of the last six months) has a lot to do with its source material, which eschews the twisty legalese of “Murder on the Orient Express” in favor of human pathos and crimes of the heart. And yet, the real strength of Branagh’s seemingly cursed second outing as detective Hercule Poirot — a movie postponed by COVID and hexed with actors (plural!) who spent the pandemic sabotaging their careers — is that it doubles down on what the first one did so well.

How to fall flat on your face Garter Lane Arts Centre March 8-12 WATERFORD actress Katie Honan is back in town preparing for a show she has written herself called ‘How to fall flat on your face’. Katie has wowed audiences in recent years in award winning productions and received a Best Actress nomination in 2017 for her performance in ‘Let the Right One in’ at the Abbey Theatre. Katie plays Anna, a Waterford woman who falls flat on her face and spends a day in a London hospital corridor, waiting. Her face is broken but from the neck down she is unmarked with red nails, skinny jeans and heels. Sitting in a city that is not her own, Anna’s mind wanders between past and present.

Finding Jack Charlton Virgin Media Player

ON the lookout for more comfort food, we stumbled on this. What’s more comforting than a curry in pie form? This one-pot paneer pie is filled with a makhani-style filling and topped with a crisp puff pastry lid. So it’s a meal in one. You will need to make a trip to your local Asian food store for some of the ingredients, like fenugreek seeds, but it’ll be worth the effort — don’t skimp! Although, if you can’t find paneer, try halloumi. If you can’t find halloumi, try feta. If you can’t find feta, then you probably shouldn’t be reading this.

If you jmissed this when it was released in 2020, catch up now. Virgin Media Television’s film ‘Finding Jack Charlton’ was announced winner of Best Documentary at the prestigious Broadcast Awards 2022 in London recently. The film has already picked up a host of awards and nominations, and anchored Virgin Media’s ‘Donate For Dementia’ campaign, raising over €1m for the Alzheimer Society of Ireland. The documentary tells the remarkable story of Jack Charlton and followed the last 18 months of his life and his previously undocumented battle with dementia.

FAMED for its Fairy Trail which has been greatly missed by so many of us during these cruel times, Wells House is back open this week and has a lot more to offer on its some 450 acres of land. The Animal Farm has sprung into life, it being spring, with pygmy goats, rabbits, guinea pigs, budgies and the kids’ favourites, the meerkats. And once you’ve exhausted the gang, the Brambles restaurant will be open for some delicious treats after a day of exciting adventures.

THIS stunning set of Organic ‘Liberty Nages’ wines which include a red, a white and a rosé, are made using local Rhône valley grape varieties and grown organically in the southern Rhône valley. The ‘Liberty Nages’ range has no added sulphates, are lower in alcohol (11-12%) and made using natural yeast, so you can be assured of a smooth passage into that land of wine make believe.

We all know the format by now: celebrities choose eight songs, a book and a luxury to take with them to a desert island. First broadcast in 1942, more than 3,000 episodes have been recorded and last year it was voted ‘Best radio programme of all time’. Given desert islands are not an option at this point in time, this is comfort listening at its finest and you’d be surprised who you might find choosing the discs. (Pictured is current host Laurene Laverne).

o holy st anthony Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore of you to obtain for me my request....(Pause) The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so you are the saint of miracles. O gentle and loving St Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, intercede for me and whisper my prayer into the ear of the sweet Infant Jesus who loved to linger in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will be yours. 7th Anniversary Edward (Eddie) walsh

In Loving Memory of Edward (Eddie) Walsh, late of 158 Ceannt Road, Cork Road, Waterford who died on the 20th February 2015. Miss me but let me go: When I come to the end of the road, And the sun has set for me, I want no rites in a gloom-filled room, Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little but not too long, And not with your head bowed low, Remember the love that we once shared, Miss me - but let me go. For this is a journey that we all must take, And each must go alone, It’s all part of the Master’s plan, A step on the road to home. When you are lonely and sick of heart, Go to the friends we know, And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds, Miss me - But Let me Go! - Loved and missed by your sister Angela, Paddy, Noel & Michelle, Alexei, Mick, Emma, Aoife & Niamh I was honoured and privileged, To have a brother like you, A kind and gentle person, A loving brother too, Your heart was too open, Your smile so warm and sweet, Your arms so full of love, You made me seem complete, A photo to treasure is all that I can touch, Of a wonderful brother that I miss so much. - Sadly missed by your brother Tommy, Helena, Michelle, Lyndsey, Ann & Jake Our thoughts are ever with you, Though you have passed away, And those who loved you dearly, Are thinking of you today. - From Our Pat and Norah God called your name so softly, That only you could hear, And no-one heard the footsteps, Of Angels drawing near, The golden gate stood open, God saw you needed rest, His garden must be beautiful, He only takes the best, Of all the things in life, However great or small To have you as my brother, Was the greatest gift of all. I don’t need a special day, To bring you to my mind, For a day without a thought of you, Is very hard to find. - Loved and dearly missed by your sister Mary, Tony, Jeanette, Caitriona, Richard, Susan, Leanne & extended families Softly from the shadows You heard a gentle call Taking the hand of Jesus You quietly left us all. Will those who think of Eddie today, A little prayer to Jesus say. - From Jimmy, Ruth, Sinead, Aisling, James and extended families. PRAYER TO ST JUDE Most holy apostle St Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus. I am so helpless and alone. I implore you to bring visible and speedy help. Come to my assistance in this great need (ask for favour). I will be ever mindful of this great favour, to always honour you as my special and powerful patron. Amen. P.G.
