Beware of the Covid conmen
CRIMINALS have been attempting to use the coronavirus crisis to scam money from unsuspecting members of the public. Gardaí are investigating a number of scams and have appealed to the public to be alert. In Waterford and Kilkenny there have been reports of people disguising themselves as charity workers and going door-to-door offering to carry out Covid-19 tests on members for cash. These con-artists have forced the Red Cross in Waterford to issue a statement saying all their volunteers have identification and that anyone who is concerned about the veracity of members they encounter should ask for the ID. A spokesperson said the crimnals were targeting the elderly and offering test swabs for €100. “Please note that we do not offer this service,” said the spokesperson. “Please report this to An Garda

Siochana as they are scamming the vulnerable. Our members when out on duty are required to wear full uniform and each member also has to carry their unique membership ID card.” There are also reports in Waterford about a scam in which people receive a text message recommending selfisolation and asking the person to click on a link. Gardaí warn that this is a fraud - do not click on the link. For accurate information on Covid19, follow the Government guidelines on gov.ie or HSE.ie. Bank of Ireland has urged customers to watch out for the following scams. *Fraudulent WhatsApp messages offering banking advice” *Suspicious social media posts linking back to fake websites *Requests to dial high-cost phone lines operating as advice centres *Calls from fake medical or charitable organisations asking for urgent money transfers.

Volunteers waiting to go to the walls VOLUNTEERS are and always have been at the heart of the Waterford Walls International Street Art Festival From its very first year, Waterford Walls was made possible by the effort and time donated by volunteers of all ages and each year they prove that the festival could not go ahead without them. Because of the Covid-19 crisis, the 2020 volunteer programme is on an indefinite hold. However the volunteers themselves have not disappeared, and have kept in touch with the Waterford Walls team about the upcoming festival, scheduled for August, and the future of the programme. The festival’s organisers say Waterford can be incredibly proud to know that such wonderful and hardworking people are dedicated to their city and being a part of its community through their involvement with the festival. In 2018, Waterford Walls developed a new volunteer programme, with the aim of training volunteers with the skills necessary for different areas of festival preparation and management, and in turn equipping them with as many
benefits and opportunities as possible. Last year this programme flourished and they had more than 50 volunteers from Waterford and beyond come together to make a difference in the city and the community. Some volunteers commuted from as far as Dungarvan, Kilkenny, and even Dublin, in order to
participate in the festival. One of the volunteers last year was a 12-year-old budding photographer, who spent the entire week as the official festival photographer, cycling across the city, meeting the artists and capturing the buzz in the streets. His photography surpassed his age, and on the last day
of Waterford Walls 2019 he was paired with the festival’s professional photographer so that he could learn the ropes in regards to photographing street artists at work. For further details, contact Waterford Walls at: info@ waterfordwalls.ie or go directly to the website www. waterfordwalls.ie.
Mortgage break for crisis-hit borrowers
WATERFORD Council has some welcome news for its home loan borrowers who are suffering financial hardship because of the Covid-19 crisis. Local Authority borrowers may now apply for a mortgage payment break of up to three months on their home loan if they have experienced a reduction, or anticipate a reduction, in their income, arising from the emergency, and they are unable to make repayments on the loan. A mortgage payment break means that the borrower will make no mortgage payments for up to three months. Additional interest will not accrue to the borrowers account during the period of the payment break, ensuring no increased cost. The monthly repayment following the break will increase to facilitate the repayment of the loan over the remainder of its existing term. This facility applies to all local authority home loan products. Further information and the application form are available at www.waterfordcouncil.ie
‘Huge gap’ in city retail as Debenhams shuts up shop THE announcement that Debenhams is to close its Waterford store has come as a blow to the city’s retail sector. The British company, which is sruggling in its home base, had closed all 11 of its stores in Ireland because of Covid-19 restrictions and has now said none of the Irish stores will re-open. Fianna Fail TD Mary Butler feared the Waterford closure might have a knock-on effect on neighbouring stores. “The closure of the store also leaves a huge gap in the retail sector in the city, as it was the anchor tenant in City Square,” she said. “Workers in the concession stores – Top Shop, Miss Selfridge, Oasis and Quiz - will also be affected. My thoughts are with all of the workers and their families at this difficult time.” Ms Butler’s view was echjoed by other local politicians. Green TD Marc Ó Cathasaigh said the closure was a huge blow. He called on Waterford people to make a point of supporting their local businesses where possible. “So many local businesses have closed their doors and unfortunately, not all of them will re-open,” he said. “We all need to make a special effort to spend our money in our city and county so we protect as many of these businesses as possible. It’s only when they are gone that we will truly see what we have lost.”
Sinn Féin’s David Cullinane said it was no secret that Debenhams had been struggling but the appointment of liquidators was still a huge shock . “It is extremely stressful for workers to lose their jobs at any time, but right now - in the midst of a pandemic - and when people are really struggling, it is a double blow,” he said. Debenhams employs some 2,000 people in Ireland, both directly, and indirectly through in-store concessions. It took over the old Roches Stores anchor unit in City Square in 2006. The company’s UK parent is carrying debt of more than €600 million and has gone into administration for the second time in 12 months. It is feared the stores there may also end up in liquidation when the Covid-19 crisis is over. The company said it was “desperately sorry” to liquidate its Irish business. Ms Butler said it was important that Debenhams engages with the workers to outline what, if any, redundancy terms were being offered. She said she would be contacting the Minister for Social Protection to establish what options and supports were open to the workers and also calling on the Government to ensure that retraining and upskilling opportunities are made available to the workers once the Covid-19 crisis restrictions are lifted.

Ups and downs of indoor athletics
S
taying in is the new going out and twiddling your thumbs has become a training exercise as people learn how to keep fit without leaving their living rooms. I have been developing a little routine myself and I thought I might share it with you. I have, in fact, been working on this for some time now, but since the lockdown I have got it off to perfection. It is very simple and requires no expensive equipment - no rowing machines or cross trainers, or any sort of special gear. All you need is a set of stairs, a pair of reading glasses and a coffee-maker. When you get proficient you may want to add a few other household items to your fitness pack, but those three will do to get you started. It works like this. I remember something I have left in a bedroom. It is a very important something and urgently required for the very important things I am about to do. So I go upstairs to fetch it.
Michael Wolsey
I get distracted by something that is also very important, like the headline in an old newspaper which is lying on the bed. It’s shocking news. Or rather it was shocking news last week. Today it’s old news . Unfortunately this old news has made me forget the very important thing I came upstairs to fetch. So I go back down. A more recent newspaper is on the table. It may have better news, so I look for my glasses to check it out. My late wife was very good at finding my glasses. She could
never find her own but she was great at finding mine. I am not so good - and if I don’t find them I will not be able to do those very important things. I check in the kitchen. No sign of the glasses but I see the cof-
fee machine has a capsule ready for insertion. I left it there before I got distracted by the very important things I have to do. I’ll make that coffee now but ... I wonder are my glasses upstairs? I sometimes leave them
upstairs in the room with the computer. I go up and into the bedroom. This is not the computer room, I know, but I’ve a very important thing to collect here. If only I could remember what it is. My glasses? No - they
might be in the computer room, though. But there’s no sign of them there so I go downstairs. Hey, here are the glasses. In the kitchen, beside the coffee machine. Wrong. Beside the coffee machine is the case for the glasses but it is empty. Where are the actual glasses? Upstairs, I’ll bet. I’ll just put on this coffee and then I’ll check. Or maybe I should look for the glasses first. I have very important things to be doing, after all. I go upstairs. On an average day I may make 40 pointless journeys up the stairs. Add to that another 40 necessary return journeys and I’m notching up a minimarathon every 24 hours. Frustrated but fit, that’s me. I note that two researchers at the University of Toronto have concluded that forgetting is just as important as remembering. “It’s important that the brain forgets irrelevant details and instead focuses on the stuff that’s going to help make decisions in the real world,” they say. Very wise. I must remember that.
Get financially fit while in lockdown
The lockdown is helping us stay healthy and we’re doing it for ourselves and our families our most important focus. Here are some thoughts on how you can emerge from this in the best financial shape possible whether or not your income has been affected. Some have seen jobs disappear for good; others are facing a temporary lay-off. Many more have seen a reduction in their income. Each of these events needs attention. This situation has not been caused by you or your employer, and there are supports to help you through it. Start by establishing what income support is available and start claiming it. Establish what other benefits may be available, such as rent supplement etc. Start a family budget and examine your spending currently. This will help you understand where where there is unneces-
Expert VIEW John Smiles Qualified Financial Advisor sary spending. Compare your income levels to show if you have surplus money, or whether you don’t have enough to cover the bills. If your income exceeds your expenditure, save the money and add to your pension fund. If your new income doesn’t cover the bills and you don’t have a financial nest egg, get tough on the big expenditure items. Conserve whatever cash you can. Talk to your mortgage lender about a break. Do you need two cars? Look at all discretionary costs that are not absolutely necessary over the coming months. This is a good time to review your impulse spending – takeaways, treats and alcohol etc. Those who built up a cash emergency fund can now put it to good use. Tap into surplus cash in the bank first instead of your investments, due to the recent fall in markets. Many have been unaffected by the crisis and have the bonus of spending less money while in lockdown. This is a great opportunity to bolster your emergency fund; keep saving money into any regular investments and your pension plan. As markets have fallen, investing now can be seen as a temporary sale - you are buying assets at depressed prices. Rather than just hoard cash, keep topping up your investments and pension.

Game firm turns hand to medical test kits
CARTAMUNDI is the world’s leading manufacturer of card, board and digital games but its workers in Waterford have taken on a new challenge. Its plant on the Cork Road has partially reopened to assemble essential medical test kits. Barry Morrissey, Managing Director of Cartamundi Ireland said: “A small team of employees will work on some of the plant’s production lines to package components of essential medical test kits. We are delighted to be in a position to use our expertise to support this important and essential activity at this time. “We could not do this without the support and dedication of our employees and their health and safety remains our top priority.” Cartamundi Ireland has put in place specific protection measures for workers on the production lines, including plexiglass screens and distancing measures, and will continue to follow the strict guidelines and health measures recommended by the HSE.

Bishop takes a message of Hold onto your hope to city’s empty streets Trócaire box and start tip tapping BISHOP Alphonsus Cullinan walked through an empty Waterford city carrying a large cross over his shoulder in commemoration of Good Friday. He invited people to take out their own cross, crucifix, or light a candle and spend some time in silent prayer. “Some people stopped, some knelt,” he said. “There is something about the cross which strikes us all. The cross is always something awkward to talk about, in one sense its always out of place and yet, it is true to say it is also totally relevant no matter who we are, all of us know something about the cross, our burdens in life.” In his pastoral letter for Holy Week, Bishop Cullinan said all our lives have been utterly changed in the past few weeks. But he said the crisis had also revealed heroism and genuine neighbourliness. He thanked priests who are looking after the sick, the lonely, and those in mourning. “And I thank all those who contacted their priests to enquire after their wellbeing,” he said.
TRÓCAIRE has urged the people of Waterford to hold onto their Trócaire boxes until it is safe to return them . The agency’s Lent campaign continued despite the COVID-19 pandemic, but Trócaire cancelled all face-toface events and outreach work. Eithne Brennan, a Trócaire worker from Tramore, said this would reduce the money it can spend in the developing world. “We are urging people to please keep a hold of their Trócaire boxes and return them when it is safe and possible to do so,” she said. “In the meantime, we are urgently trying to save lives during the Coronavirus outbreak. Supporters can continue to make donations online or over the phone to fund this work.” You can support Trócaire’s work and Lenten 2020 campaign at trocaire.org/ donate or phone 1850 408 408. Humanitarian aid agency GOAL, meanwhile, is calling on families throughout
Waterford to build their own ‘tippy tap’ hand-washing device to highlight issues facing vulnerable communities around the world fighting the coronavirus. A tippy tap is a simple but ingenious device used in many developing countries to wash hands when there is no access to running water. It can be built using an empty plastic container, sticks and string, easy to find even during lockdown. The #GOALTippyTapTag online campaign provides a fun activity at a time when we are all confined, but will also send out a message that while we may be far apart in this time of a global pandemic, we can stand together in solidarity no matter where we are in the world. Tippy Tap Tag will be taking place online including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. You can find details on how to build your very own tippy tap at https://www.goalglobal. org/goaltippytaptag/

of business supports, Richie Walsh, Head of Enterprise with Local Enterprise Office Waterford said: “There are a lot of opportunities in online selling and by accessing this Trading Online Voucher scheme, small businesses can develop a sustainable strategy for increasing sales.” Mr Walsh also welcomed a reduction in the interest rate for Microfinance Ireland loans. “If your business needs access to finance, applying for microfinance loans through Local Enterprise Office Waterford will secure the lowest available rate and you will get valuable assistance in the application process and free one-to-one mentoring along the way,” he said. COMMUNITIES and voluntary groups across Waterford city and county are receiving more than €70,000 to help them provide vital services during the Covid-19 emergency . The money comes from a national fund of €2.5 milion provided by the Department of Rural and C o m m u n i t y Development. Waterford has been allocated €73,177. Minister Michael Ring said the money would provide “immediate and urgently needed funding to groups that are participating in the Government’s Community Call initiative.” The purpose of the Community Call is to coordinate community activity and direct community assistance to where

COVID-19 OUTBREAK Don’#t forget to wash your hands
COVID-19 OUTBREAK Don’#t forget to wash your hands
Coalition ball now in court of smaller parties
THE Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil parliamentary parties have given the green light to the joint policy document that could pave the way for the formation of a government. The smaller parties, whose support is needed, are now considering the proposals. Sinn Féin has dismissed it as “a wish list of vague promises”. Waterford’s Sinn Féin TD, David Cullinane, said the aim of the agreement was to keep Sinn Féin out of government and hoodwink people into thinking FF and FG will deliver change. The 24-page policy plan is aimed at charting a course for economic recovery in the aftermath of the Covid-19 crisis. It proposes to give the State a greater role in the areas of health, childcare and building homes. But Mr Cullinane said: “The
reality is that most what is in this document will never see the light of day. They (FF and FG) have proved - during their previous carve-up of power that they are not short of spin, but are light when it comes to delivery. Everyone knows they can’t be trusted.” TDs and senators from FF and FG considered the document at meetings conducted online. There was little dissent at either meeting although some concern was expressed at both about how the pledges would be funded. There were also worries about what such a government would mean for the longterm identity of the parties . Fine Gael Minister of State, Johnn Paul Phelan, the Ferrybank TD, is reported to have told the party that he has deep reservations that Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael could end up in a “death struggle” after
such a government. Minister for Rural Affairs Michael Ring spoke against a coalition and Agriculture Minister Michael Creed expressed concern but said he cold see no alternative. The main criticisms from the Fianna Fáil camp were about lack of detail on how targets would be achieved and how they would be paid for. Kikenny TD John McGuinness told the meeting that the only things the document lacked was free Wifi and Netflix for everyone. He said no party in the Dáil could actually reject the policy framework due to the wide breadth of the comittments. His sentiment was echoed by other Fianna Fáil representatives who described the docujent “aspirational ” and said it needed more “meat on the bones”.

Birthday Remembrance Danny MacCormack
Birthday Remembrance & 37th Anniversary MCBRIDE
In loving memory of Patrick (Paddy) Dunphy, late of 20 Ashley Drive, Cherrymount, who died on 10th April 1995. To lose a dad as we lost you, The heartache remains our whole lives through, The pain, the tears, we learn to hide, But our hearts are broken deep inside, Silent thoughts with tears unseen, Still wishing your absence was only a dream, We will love you forever, And miss you each day, We think of you always, Not only today. We miss your smiles, Your joking ways, We miss the things you used to say, And when old times we do recall, It’s then we miss you most of all, We hold you close within our hearts, And there you shall remain, To walk with us throughout our lives, Until we meet again. -Always loved and missed by Paul, Therese, daughter in law Sharon, grandchildren Ben, Cian, Anna, Reece and Leah. Time may pass and fade away, But silent thoughts and memories stay, No longer in our lives to share, But in our hearts you are always there. -Always missed by Mary MIRACULOUS, PRAYER TO ST. THERESA, THE LITTLE FLOWER O Glorious, st. Theresa whom Almighty God has raised up to aid and counsel mankind. I invite your miraculous intercessiodarraghn. So powerful are you in obtaining every need of body and soul, Our Holy Mother Church proclaims, you a prodigy of Miracles. The Business Saint of Modern Times, now I fervently beseach you to anser my petition (mention here) and carry out our promise of doing good upon earth, of letting fall from Heaven a shower of roses. Henceforth, Dear Little Flower, I will fulfil your plea to be made known everywhere and I will never cease to lead others to Jesus through you. Amen..D.P
In loving memory of Margaret ‘Peggy’ Stacey, late of St. Anthonys, Lower Yellow Road, Waterford, who died 19th April, 2006.
In loving memory of Catherine Duggan (née Hearne) late of 52 Farran Park, Upper Grange, Waterford, who departed
We speak your name with love and pride, We smile through tears we cannot hide, Death does not part us or distance divide, Each day of our life you walk by our side, Thank you for the years we shared, The love you gave and the way you cared, Look after her Lord as she takes her rest, For she was our mother and one of the best -Loved and missed always, William and Julie, Elizabeth, Luke, Adam, Alan, Sinead & Niamh.
Our prayers fly Heavenward, On angels wings, And He who walked by the Galilee, And touched the blind to make them see, And cured the man who long was lame, When he but called God’s Holy Name, Will keep you safely in His care.
Once I had something, that money could not buy, I had a special mother, But had to say goodbye, Photos of you I treasure, But they are all I have to touch, Of a mother I loved so dearly, And miss so very much -From Sharon, Derrick, Evan, Daniel and Lydia Mam, you suffered much in this sad world, And you tried so hard to smile, But still you kept on trodding, Over many a weary mile, Wishing God could have spared you, If just for a few more years, But you fell asleep without a fuss, And broke the hearts of all of us. A silent thought a secret tear, Keep your memory forever near. -Sadly missed by son Jimmy, daughter in law Marie and grand children
- Always remembered by your loving husband Pat

Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Take it Dear Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart, where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. O.W. Birthday Remembrance for Olive McBride, late of Roanmore Park whose Birthday occurs on April 14th. In loving memory of her son Jeremy McBride, whose 37th anniversary also occurs on the 14th of April. They say there is a reason, They say that time will heal, But neither time nor reason, Will change the way I feel, For no-one knows the heartache, That lies behind our smiles, No-one knows how many times, We have broken down and cried, Gone from home that smiling face, Those cheerful, happy ways, The heart that won so many friends, In bygone happy days, We want to tell you something, So there won’t be any doubt, You’re so wonderful to think -Loved and remembered, every day, Derek, Ian, Belinda and families

o holy st anthony Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. April Flowers
book of the week
with Justin Ivory
April showers.....we’ve certainly had our fair share of them in the last few weeks or so! There is an upside though. All that rain mixed with some sunshine and warmer temperatures leads to lots of April flowers. Our countryside, hedgerows, parks and gardens are bursting into a dazzling kaleidoscope of yellows, whites and purples/ blues, enough to brighten any dark, wet day. With the collapse in pollinators and insects in general, every one of these wildflowers is worth its weight in gold as a food source to our invertebrate populations. Below is a selection of flowers that were on display on a recent short walk near my house. Keep your eye out for these and others in the next week. If you struggle with plant identification then there are good free apps that can identify plants from a photo you take with your phone. Otherwise just take a shot and look it up online or in a good id guide later.

lockdown By Peter May
The tommy tiernan RTÉ One, Saturdays, 10.25pm
contagion Netflix and various streaming sites
Many writers may be setting out to chronicle Covid-19, but Peter May has already done it. In 2005, he wrote a crime novel set against the backdrop of a bird flu pandemic. London is in lockdown; a hospital is erected in Lambeth Palace when the bones of a child are found in a suitcase and detective Jack MacNeil is told to investigate. The book was never published because “Editors at the time thought my portrayal of London under siege by the invisible enemy of H5N1 was unrealistic,” writes May in a foreword, which is out in ebook, with a paperback to follow.
Improvised chat show in which neither the presenter nor the studio audience are told the identity of the guests in advance. With the comedian in the dark about who he will be interviewing until they walk out to greet him, anything can happen - especially if Tommy doesn’t have a clue who they are. Obviously RTE are showing repeats at the moment but still worth a look as Tommy is always entertaining - even if the guests always aren’t!
If ever there was a film for our times it’s this. Released in 2011, it’s as if they had a crystal ball for what’s happening right now. The plot concerns the spread of a virus which originates in China and attempts by medical researchers and public health officials to identify and contain the disease, a lockdown and the loss of social order in a pandemic, and the introduction of a vaccine to halt its spread. Its ensemble cast includes Marion Cotillard, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Bryan Cranston, Jennifer Ehle, and Sanaa Lathan.

The ISPCA has issued an appeal for funds after the animal chairty saw a significant drop in its fundraising. “ISPCA is greatly concerned to already see a shortfall in fundraising income due to the COVID-19 crisis,” the organisations has said. “Our vital services are dangerously stretched at a time when many of our fundraising activities have been cancelled or postponed. “But our life-saving work cannot stop. That’s why we’re launching an EMERGENCY APPEAL to help ensure all vital animal welfare services continue during this unprecedented crisis and beyond.”
Samaritans Ireland is appealing for donations to help ensure its volunteers can continue to support people struggling to cope during the Covid-19 pandemic. “Samaritans is a critical service, needed now more than ever,” Executive Director of Samaritans Ireland, Niall Mulligan said. Those worried about their own mental health or someone else during the coronavirus outbreak can find some useful online resources and advice on the Samaritanswebsite - www.samaritans.org
In this timeless retelling of the 1955 animated classic, a pampered house dog and a tough but lovable stray embark on an unexpected adventure and, despite their differences, grow closer and come to understand the value of home. The film was released direct to Disney+, making it the first Disney remake to not receive a theatrical release but on an on-demand streaming service platform. If you’re looking for a reason to splash out the €6.99 a month for the Disney+, this is as good a reason as any to get it. The kids will love it, while the parents will enjoy the trip down memory lane.’
