Cost of renting home hits €1148 THE average rent in Waterford has now soared to €1,148, up 102% from its lowest point. The increase in rents around the country reflects an on-going and unprecedented scarcity of rental homes and rents in the third quarter of 2021 were an average of 6.8% higher than the same period in 2020. But Waterford has been hit hard, according to the latest Daft report for Q3, 2021. In Waterford City, rents have risen by 10% in the last year and the average rent is now €1164. In the rest of Waterford, rents were on average 15.9% higher in the third quarter of 2021 than a year previously. The average listed rent is now €1148. Rents in Dublin are just 2.7% higher than a year ago, while rents in Cork and Galway are 6.9% and 8.3% higher. Inflation in Limerick and Waterford cities is higher again, at 8.9% and 10% respectively, while rents outside the cities are 11.9% higher than a year ago. Reflecting on the latest figures, Ronan Lyons, economist at

Joy for Gailltir’s Alannah O’Sullivan and Annie Fitzgerald after they defeated De La Salle in the Waterford Senior Camogie Final at Walsh Park. Pic Noel Browne

Trinity College Dublin and author of the Daft Report, said: “Covid-19 temporarily reshuffled Ireland’s rental problems but the latest figures confirm those problems of shortages are getting worse over time. “While Dublin had initially seen an increase in rental availability, with the number of rental homes on the market doubling from 1,600 to nearly 3,200 in 2020, those trends have reversed rapidly, with just over 800 homes available to rent on November 1st. In Ireland’s four other cities, there were 81 homes available to rent in total. “While some argue against the construction of large numbers of purpose-built rental homes, any solution to the chronic shortage of rental homes in Ireland must include building new ones. “In this regard, the pipeline of almost 45,000 new build-to-rent homes – while concentrated in the Dublin area – is particularly welcome. A bird in the hand ... can boost happiness levels

A NEW Waterford company is on a mission to raise happiness levels in the county by encouraging householders to feed birds the right food to ensure they survive winter. Studies have shown feeding birds increases people’s connection to nature and leads to feelings of wellness. But birds are now facing into the ‘hungry gap’, the

most challenging time of year, when natural food sources are at their lowest. And Patrick , Technical Officer with Waterford-based Connecting to Nature claims “the happiest Europeans are those who see the most bird species in their day-to-day life”. “Studies have shown that greater bird biodiversity can

make people more joyful. Feeding birds is a very good way of feeling closer to nature and bringing wildlife closer to you, and Ireland has a wonderful array of small wild birds that you can feed,” he added. Connecting to Nature specialises in different types of food depending on the time of year: connectingtonature.ie

Cost of renting home rises to €1148

Continued from front page more rental homes have been proposed. Their construction would help improve the availability and affordability of rental homes, something for policymakers and planners to consider,” he said. At present, there are just 12 properties to rent in Waterford County and only 13 in Waterford City. To compound issues, a surge in demand is sending asking prices up for those hoping to buy outside the capital, as more people consider working from home. A report by real estate group RE/MAX found that asking prices increased 9.1% nationally in the year to the end of the third quarter of 2021, putting the average list price for homes nationwide in the third quarter of this year at €287,704. In Waterford city, asking prices rose 6.3% in Q3 2021; however, in Waterford county, list prices rocketed by 17.5%. In areas within commuting distance of Dublin, like Carlow, asking prices rose by 14.4% on the year to an average list price of €226,391.

53% of us could not pay €56k for deep retrofit

DESPITE the pressing need to do so, over half of all Irish people say they could not afford an average cost of €56,000 to ‘deep retrofit’ their home if came to it. The findings of a survey by Liquid Gas Ireland, follow the launch of the Climate Action Plan 2021 recently, which reiterated the Government’s ambitious target to retrofit 500,000 homes and install 400,000 heat pump systems in existing dwellings by 2030. Respondents were asked how they would react to this cost when considering lower carbon options, in a situation where their home heating system broke down. Not only were one in two not in a position to foot an average retrofit bill, but 66% were also unaware of the Government’s intention to ban the installation of fossil fuel boilers in new homes by 2023. Reflecting on the results of the survey, Chair of Liquid Gas Ireland, Brian Derham, said: “While we very much support the overall objective of the revised Climate Action Plan, it’s clear that more lower carbon options need to be embraced and promoted by Government to encourage homeowners to engage with Ireland’s decarbonisation journey. “We must broaden the scope of the current ‘one size fits all’

approach to retrofitting and heat pump installation. This is particularly important for rural communities who must continue to have access to financially viable technology choices that meet their unique needs and allow them to positively support Ireland achieve its climate action targets. Mr Derham added: “When looking for lower carbon home heating alternatives, it’s clear to see that cost remains the number-one barrier in deterring homeowners from ‘deep retrofitting’ their houses to facilitate the installation of a heat pump system. Our findings also reveal the real concern that exists around a potential lack of financially viable lower carbon heating options that many homeowners could face if they wish to switch their home heating source.” The average cost of a fullscale retrofit in 2020, including heat pump installation, was €56,000. In response to what would concern respondents most about having to carry out extensive energy upgrades on their home heating systems, 66% cited the high cost to deep retrofit a home for installation of a heat pump system. Meanwhile, 57% pointed to a resulting lack of other low carbon options should their heating system break down.

Council installs 129 solar panels at depot

SHOWING it is committed to reducing CO2 emissions by 51% by 2030, Waterford City and County Council recently installed solar panels at its machinery yard depot in Dungarvan. The installation includes 129 solar panels which will help reduce 17 tonnes of CO2 being emitted to the environment through the elimination of electricity being imported from the electrical grid.

The solar panels were installed by Dungarvan Engineering company, Solar Evolution, which is working exclusively in the green economy and specialises in solar PV installations. Funding of 30% was received from Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland under the Better Energy Communities Scheme, with the grant funding application coordinated through Three Counties Energy Agency.

The infection destroying sport for our children

T

HE referee said it was a foul but Bruno Fernandes disagreed; he ran over to the official and wagged a finger in his face. Soon the midfielder was joined by most of his Manchester United team-mates and they surrounded the ref, waving and gesticulating in a fruitless effort to make him change his mind. Their protest drew a response from the stands. Sky’s broadcast unit picked up only a little of the vitriol but, even from that, it was clear the supporters were baying for blood. A week later I saw a similarly unpleasant scene playing out around me. I wasn’t at a Premier League stadium or even a League of Ireland ground. The venue was the local park where my 10-year-old granddaughter

Michael Wolsey

was playing. The trouble didn’t arise from her game but on an adjoining pitch where boys were playing; they looked in their early teens and I was told later that it was an under-14 side. I don’t know what sparked the incident. When I turned to look, all

of the players from both teams had surrounded the referee and were waving and shouting at him. One youngster pushed an opponent who fell into the ref, knocking him sideways. As with my Premier League example, some of the supporters added their voices to the argument. There were no TV microphones to pick up the unpleasant comments - none were needed since there were only about twenty people standing around the pitch and they could be heard clearly. That made it worse. These people on the sidelines were, presumably, parents or relatives of the young players. They could easily be identified but were still prepared to shout abuse at a man who had given up his Sunday morning to help their children. Boys were the on-pitch culprits here, but a neighbour, who

used to be a referee, tells me he also had trouble with girls and that some level of abuse was common from spectators at any juvenile match. My neighbour is a former footballer who thought refereeing would let him give back something to the game he loved. He packed it in because he found the young players impossible to control and the parents as ill-disciplined as their offspring. He quit a couple of years ago, just before the Dublin District Schoolboy League (DDSL) controversially revealed that, over the course of six weeks, it had abandoned seven games because of fights and other violent incidents. Things have not improved. The North Dublin Schoolboys/ Schoolgirls Soccer League, a successor to the DDSL, was forced to cancel a whole week-

end of matches because referees were no longer prepared to put up with threatening behaviour from supporters, players, coaches and managers. I referred to the Bruno Fernandes incident because I believe this bad behaviour is a problem that starts at the top and spreads down. Every week on television we see the super stars of soccer arguing with referees, huffing and stomping around the pitch, while their managers go ballistic on the sidelines. They set a bad example but the infection might not have spread if juvenile leagues had backed their referees and made it clear that discipline would be enforced with yellow and red cards and that spectators who misbehaved would be banned from grounds. The problem is not confined to soccer. It also arises in GAA

club games at all age levels because there, too, criticism of the referee is tolerated from both players and spectators. It is not a problem for rugby where the convention is that only the team captain speaks to the referee. If he has a complaint, he makes it politely and if the complaint is rejected he accepts the referee’s ruling without protest. It’s a custom not a rule and it is not always followed, but in general it works and imposes order on the game at all levels. Last week a rugby player told a radio interviewer why discipline was better in his sport. “I played rugby for ten years,” he said, “and I can remember the name of the referee in every match I played - it was Sir.” Soccer and Gaelic sports will continue to have problems unless and until their young players can say the same.

Children of Lir

TV of the week

with Justin Ivory

Whooper Swan (Photo Justin Ivory) We are all familiar with the ancient Irish myth of ‘The Children of Lir’. The story goes that the four children of Lir, a king and ruler of the sea, Aodh, Fionnula, Fiachra and Conn, were turned into swans by their jealous stepmother Aoife. They were cursed to spend 900 years in this form spending 300 years at each of three different locations. But what type of swan were transformed into? Undoubtedly, it was Whooper Swan (Cygnus cygnus), our truly wild swan in Ireland. Mute Swans have only been here for a few centuries and other than some hisses and snorts, are relatively quiet, and do not call in flight. Whoopers on the other hand are very vocal, particularly in flight, emitting a trumpeting, honking sound ‘whoop-whoop-whoop-whoop’, reminiscent of an old car horn! And as we know from the myth, the Children of Lir were noted for singing Whooper swans are the same size as our more familiar Mute Swan. They are immensely handsome with snow white plumage, a long, slender, elegant neck, usually held very erect and black legs. The head slopes gently into a black bill which has a distinctive, large yellow patch running from the base and ending in a V-shape approximately half-way down the bill. The Whooper Swans we see in Ireland are winter visitors from Iceland where they breed during the summer. The last census there showed a population of 34,000. This Icelandic population almost exclusively winters in Ireland and the UK. They can be found throughout the country at wetlands, lakes, river estuaries, coastal inlets, and lowland open farmland adjacent to these areas. Now is a great time to go out and see these magnificent wild swans.

Anniversary Mass on Sunday, 21st November 2021 at 5.30 p.m. in St. Saviours Church. A face that is always on my mind, A smile I have seen a million times, Two eyes that would light up the sky at night, One last battle you could not fight. I clasped your hand so warm in mine, Soon we would be out of time. To stay with us you fought so hard, Into a million pieces went my heart. Great memories I will always keep with me, Your love in my heart for eternity. - Forever in my heart, your loving husband, James. I have a guardian Angel in Heaven and I call her Mom, So I send this special message To Heaven up above, Please take care of my Angel, And send her all my love. - Hugs and kisses, Sophie XX Long is the road to yesterday That leads us back to you, And memories of us together And happy times we knew. We shared so much together, Laughter, joy and tears, For us who thought so much of you, They were our happiest years. Nothing can replace you Gemma, Nothing ever will, In life we loved you dearly, In death we love you still. The precious years won’t come again When we were all together, But the love and joy you gave to us, Will stay with us forever. - Forever loved and missed every day, Mum and Dad A Sister is a special gift, One you think will stay You never think the day will come When she will go away. I think of you when I need a friend On you I always did depend And when old times I do recall, That’s when I miss you most of all. But when I am sad and lonely, And things are going wrong, I seem to hear you whisper, Cheer up and carry on. And when I see your picture You seem to smile and say, Don’t cry, I am only sleeping, We’ll meet again someday. - Too loved to ever be forgotten, Sarah and Toff

Just a prayer from an Aunt who loved you, Just a memory fond and true, In my heart you will live forever, Because I thought the world of you. - Always loved, John and Eleanor No length of time can take away Our thoughts of you from day to day, Time slips by and life moves on, But from our hearts you are never gone.

- Always remembered, Kenny and Tara We’re thinking of you today, But that is nothing new, We thought about you yesterday And the day before that too. We’ll think of you tomorrow, We will our whole lives through, The day we fail to think of you, Is the day God takes us too. - Sadly missed, but not forgotten, David and Gemma

Carrick on Suir

Those we love don’t go away, They walk beside us every day, Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed and very dear. - All our love, Jonathan and Aisling If roses grow in Heaven Lord Pick a bunch for us, Place them in Gemma’s arms And tell her they’re from all of us. - With love from Jaime, Beth, Alex, John, Mathew, Chloe, Nicole, Bobby and Caoimhe You are the sun shining bright, You are the night turning light, You are the smile on someone’s face, You are the heartbeat in life’s race. Ours are the hearts that hold you dear, Fondest memories, keeping you near. You are forever in our hearts. - Sadly missed & never forgotten. Helen, Jim & family xx Our thoughts are ever with you Though you have passed away. And those who loved you dearly Are thinking of you today. Every day in some small way Memories of you come our way. Though absent, you are always near# - Still missed, loved and always dear- Love Always, Jonathan, Niamh, Lily, Alfie and Frankie xx

Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Take it Dear Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart, where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. D.P.
