WATERFORD’S mayor, John Pratt, has launched a Take 3 for the Sea litter initiative in Tramore. It asks everyone to take action against coastal litter by bringing three pieces of litter from the beach, stream or countryside and putting them in a bin. The campaign focuses particularly on plastic pollution. A teachers’ handbook has

been developed to help primary and secondary school teachers to explore the issues with their class. It is available online at www.waterfordcouncil.ie. Meanwhile, a new group, aimed at helping Tramore transition to a low carbon future, is set to hold a brainstorming workshop in the Coastguard Cultural Centre on Thursday at 7pm.

Zero Carbon Tramore hopes the public will attend and contribute ideas.

BORIS GUDONOV BORIS Gudunov was a Tsar in Russia just after the reign of Ivan the Terrible. He came to the throne not because he was born to it but because the legitimate heir, a young boy named Dimitri died at the age of 7. The inference always was that Gudonov had Dimitri killed so that he could take control of the country. Gudonov was was one of the highest ranking advisers to the previous Tsar and had ranked around him enough nobles to make a claim on the throne. For the Russian people a country without a Tsar was unthinkable and within a short amount of time he was begged by the masses to become Tsar, w h i c h he did. The problem was that this was a very unstable time in Russia’s history and there were a lot of enemies on their borders looking on and seeing that this was a time of opportunity. This they found in the form of a former monk who declared himself to be the real Tsarevich Dimitri who hadn’t died after all. He Ă€HG DEURDG DQG ZKHWKHU WKH UXOHUV WKHUH DFWXDOO\ WKRXJKW KH was the real Dimitri or not, they saw in him an opportunity to attack Russia. Opinion&Comment

Camogie makes us â‚Ź7,000 richer

A date for the Diary

I

t would appear that the Taoiseach has taken the surprise element out of the date of the next General Election by coming out and publicly stating that he would prefer if it were held next May, 2020. It seems that this particular date has already been mooted in Government circles for some time and even the leader of Fianna Fail Michael Martin was made aware of the date back in August in a letter the Taoiseach sent to him. Leo Varadkar has been quite clear about why he prefers this particular date. It would be well clear of the date set for Brexit and whatever that outcome would be it would allow the Government time to deal with any and all repercussions of what is anticipated to be a very messy time politically and economically. There are also some other Governmental duties that will also be out of the way including various summits and St. Patrick’s Day trips. It all seems unfeasibly well ordered and if HYHU\WKLQJ JRHV WR SODQ WKHQ LW ZRXOG EH RQH RI WKH ¿UVW JHQHUDO elections in a long time that people would have had time to get ready for. The Taoiseach believes that Fine Gael could even win the next election even if this is only to be seen in the last 10 days to a week of the campaigning. Again this all seems very ordered and in a manner in which events don’t happen to unfold in the real world. Naturally enough he has to be optimistic for the chances for his party and he might even be right and Fine Gael might win. But even if it wins it won’t win outright. That doesn’t tend to happen in Irish politics, or even when it does it tends to happen very rarely. No matter how well you try to plan for something there is a tendency that life gets in the way. The fact that the Taoiseach and his Ministers seem to think that they have everything planned out for all eventualities of Brexit is reassuring. What really will happen remains to be seen. Undoubtedly there is much that the Irish public is not being told which is probably all to the better and the image being projected of a Government in control is reassuring. The message of Business as Usual is at this stage a good one, even down to talking about a general election being held next year. Only time will tell if this will end up being the real election date.

Farming’s a mystery in land of urban myths

here does m i l k c o m e f r o m ? Straight from the fridge, s a i d 18% of British schoolchildren interviewed for a recent study. And they weren’t trying to be funny. Well, I suspect some of them were. But 40% of the children interviewed genuinely did not know that milk comes from cows. It was clear from other answers that many of these kids had never seen cattle. When asked to illustrate the size of a cow, 10% compared it to a double-decker bus while a further 10% thought it was about the same size as a cat. This study was conducted ODVW \HDU IRU WKH FKRFRODWH ¿UP Cadbury. I don’t think there is such ignorance in Ireland where it is impossible to make a journey of more than a few miles without SDVVLQJ ¿HOGV ¿OOHG ZLWK HLWKHU crops or animals. But in trawling through these surveys, I came across one commissioned by the Grow It Yourself people in Waterford which found that one in every seven Irish children believes fruit and vegetables originate in supermarkets. So if we haven’t yet plumbed the British depths, we could be heading in that direction. The gap of understanding between urban and rural dwellers is widening and that cannot be good. The dispute at beef factories is a matter of mystery to most city folk - they would have a better grasp of the issues dividing North and South Korea. The threads that join our urban and rural communities are unravelling. There was a time when most of us had, at very least, a relative in farming - an uncle, an auntie, a grandad. That is no longer true and there are fewer points of contact. One might be the National Ploughing Championships, the biggest agricultural event of the year. But is anyone who does not have a strong farming connection among the crowds in Carlow? I doubt it. When my children were young we lived in Dublin and we took them every year to the Spring Show at the RDS. It was as big an event for city folk as it was for farmers: a chance not only to see livestock but to actually handle farm animals - pet them, feed them even.

The demands of modern life drove the show from Dublin, ZKHUH WUDྜF JRW LQ WKH ZD\ of farmers delivering their livestock and made driving and parking a problem for visitors up from the country. The Ploughing has replaced it on the agricultural calendar. I brought my children to the RDS but I do not bring my grandchildren to the Ploughing Championships. I just wouldn’t feel at home there and, besides, the farms where it is held are, for me, more trouble to reach than the entertainment is worth. I have no doubt, though, that my grandchildren are losing out. If they grow up believing that eggs are produced by cows the size of a double-decker bus, I will have only myself to blame. - Michael Wolsey

Future lack of candidates with second language RECRUITMENT website Jobs.ie warns of potential skill shortage for roles requiring workers with a second language following a decline in CAO points required for modern language courses. Of the total language roles posted on the Jobs.ie website since the beginning of 2019, 29% of those require workers with the ability to communicate in German, followed by French (22%), Dutch (13%), Italian (6%), and Spanish (6%). A rise can be seen in the number of jobs requiring non-European languages, such as Korean (+2,050% on 2018) and Chinese (+40% on 2018). Jobs requiring a foreign language competency made up almost 4% of total job postings on the site. Language course points The recent CAO results charted a decline in the points

Grey Seal pup along the Wicklow coastline (Photo Justin Ivory) GREY SEAL pupping season is well under way along our coastline. The pupping season typically lasts from late August to early December. I was lucky enough to find three pups at different little coves along the Wicklow coastline last week. These were observed from about 1 km away using good optics to avoid any disturbance. While seals are always prone to disturbance when hauled-out they are particularly vulnerable at this time of year when they are giving birth i.e. ‘pupping’.

Seal colonies up and down Follow all instructions to avoid disturbance (Photo Justin Ivory) the East Coast are coming under pressure from increased human recreational activities, particularly from dog walkers. Here is a reminder of some things to note in relation to Grey Seals this time of year: 1. Mothers will leave seal pups unattended on the beach for long periods. In most cases they are not abandoned and don’t need rescuing. 2. Do not approach pups or adults and keep dogs on a lead. 3. Grey Seal pups are born with a white coat called lanugo. This coat is not waterproof. If they are scared into the sea, or, as has happened before, put into the sea by people ‘rescuing’ them, they will drown or even if they make it back to shore end up dying of hypothermia. They shed their white coat after 3 weeks and replace it with a mottled grey waterproof coat. 4. Grey Seals are protected by law and it is a criminal offence to disturb or harm them. 5. CHARITY COFFEE MORNING In aid of Waterford Hospice Society, Thursday 19 September, 10am.

CULTURE NIGHT @ THE ROYAL Friday 20 September, Theatre Royal www.theatreroyal.ie

MENTAL HEALTH MATES GROUP WALK Sunday Ocober 6, 10:30am – 12pm People’s Park Waterford.

A quick reminder: We are proud to be taking part as a host of Ireland’s Biggest Coffee Morning for Hospice together with Bewley’s, which will take place on Thursday 19th September 2019 in St. Patrick’s Gateway Centre @ 10-12p.m. Coffee mornings are a great excuse to catch up with friends over a hot cup of coffee (or tea) , a slice of cake and some biscuits ,have a chat and raise money for a good cause at the same time. Remember, every euro raised during our Coffee Morning will support Waterford Hospice & Care Services.

Join us for Culture Night 2019 at Theatre Royal Waterford. At 5.45 p.m. come enjoy comedy with the hilarious Stephen Stubbs & Guests at The Stage Door Bar. Followed by Back Stage Tour at 6.15 p.m. where the tour gives you a glimpse of a working theatre while hearing about the architecture and performance history of the venue. Pre-booking at Box Office is essential as places are limited. Please note the tour takes approx. 45 minutes and will leave the viewer captivated and enthralled at the beauty of the building.

When you’re affected by your mental health, sometimes you can’t help but feel like you are alone. We have to remember that we are not alone and that is what these walks are for. A gentle reminder that people are there for us. Bring a friend, partner, kids, pets or just come alone to meet new people. We will be doing a lap or two of the park, and then dropping into the Park Lodge Café to grab a cuppa. It will only be for an hour or so! You can walk and talk, or if you’re more comfortable, you can just walk and not talk at all. It’s completely up to you!

I will never lose you, I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep. I could see that you were crying, You found it hard to sleep. I spoke to you softly as you brushed away a tear. “It’s me, I haven’t left you, I’m well, I’m fine, I’m here.” I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea. You were thinking of the many times, And memories of me, I was with you at the shops today, Your arms were getting sore. I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more. I was with you at my grave today, You tend it with such care. I want to reassure you That I am not lying there. I walked with you toward the house, As you fumbled for your key, I gently put my hand on you. I smiled and said, “It’s me.” You looked so very tired, And sank into a chair. I tried so hard to let you know That I was standing there. It’s possible for me to be so near you every day. To say to you with certainty, “I never went away.” You sat there very quietly, Then smiled, I think you knew, In the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you. The day is over I smile and watch you yawning And say, “Goodnight, Sweet dreams,God bless, I’ll see you in the morning.” And when the time is right for you, To cross the brief divide, I’ll rush across to greet you And we will stand, side-by-side. I have so many things to show you, There is so much for you to see. Be patient, live your journey out, Then come home to be with me. - From your loving wife Teresa

Missed so dearly, Missed in the morning of every day, Missed in the evening as light fades away, Missed in a thousand and one little ways, Around every corner a memory stays. No one knows the pain we bear, When we all meet And you’re not there, We talk, we laugh, we play our part, But behind it all lie broken hearts. You gave us years of happiness, Then sorrow came with tears, You left us lovely memories, We will treasure through the years, Always loved and never forgotten.

He never looked for praise, He was never one to boast, He just went on quietly working, For the ones he loved the most, His dreams were seldom spoken, His wants were very few, And most of the time his worries, Went unspoken too, He was there a firm foundation, Through all the storms of life, A sturdy hand to hold on to, In times of stress and strife, A true friend we could turn to, When times were good or bad, One of our greatest blessings, That man that we called Dad. - From Alan, David, Jean, Neil and Miriam, sons in law and daughters in law, and grandchildren Ciara, Cillian, Sam, Alex, James, Art & Joe. PRAYER TO ST. PIO O God, your gave Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, Capuchin priest, the great privilege of participating in a unique way in the Passion of Your Son, grant me through His intercession the grace of..... which I ardently desire; and above all grant me the grace of living in conformity with the death of Jesus, to arrive at the glory of the resurrection Glory by to the Father (3 times).. A.P.

-From your loving husband John, daughters Louise and Suzanne
