Shock discovery of 3,000 Famine dead ARCHAEOLOGISTS behind a survey of a 19th century graveyard in a Co Waterford field believe there could be more than 3,000 Famine victims buried there. The survey of the single field on the edge of the Waterford Gaeltacht has already revealed over 300 graves. The survey began as a “lockdown project” for field archaeologist John Tierney and led to the mapping of hundreds of graves while also shedding light on the famineera graveyard. Originally from Cork but living in the Dungarvan area for the last 20 years, Mr Tierney is director of the Historic Graves Project. When the pandemic hit last year, he took an interest in old graveyards, including the Polla (Pulla) in the C o Waterford Gaeltacht. He secured funding from the Royal Irish Academy (RIA) to carry out more research and began a Lidar (light wave-based

technology, similar to radar) survey and drone camera study of the field at Polla — which sits about 8km from Dungarvan just off the N25 Youghal road — to find out more about the graves which are known to have been located there since the famine and subsequent decades. “We were looking for two types of grave in particular; long graves and individual graves. Long graves, where we’ve seen them elsewhere, are related to famine overwhelmingly; large amounts of people dying and being buried in mass burials and then the small singles as well,” he told RTÉ. “What really surprised is that the Lidar showed the small single graves are highly detectable using the publicly-available data set.” Mr Tierney said locals knew a lot about those buried in the field, but not exactly where the individual graves were. The graves, located in the lower section of the two-acre field are covered with vegetation, and need more work to find out more about them, he added. Continued on next page

Art pupils praised for ‘skill and imagination’

Theatre Royal show Theatre Royal will launch its 2021 season with a new production of ‘The Beauty Queen of Leenane’, premiering at Theatre Royal on October 1st and 2nd before embarking on a national tour, in conjunction with Four Rivers Theatre Company. Four Rivers is a new company producing world class theatre for audiences in the South East, and will this autumn bring a second production on the road with a revival of its acclaimed ‘Blackbird’, premiering at Garter Lane Waterford on November 5th and touring throughout the South East region. The Texaco Children’s Art Competition is popularly regarded as the longestrunning sponsorship in the history of arts sponsoring in Ireland, with an unbroken history that dates back to the first competition held in 1955.

This year, as has been the case throughout its life, it has been a platform on which young artists from Waterford and other counties throughout Ireland have had their talents recognised and their creativity commended. This year’s overall winner was PJ Doherty, from St Eunan’s College in Letterkenny, Co Donegal for his work entitled ‘Me and My Dad’.

Continued from previous page “There’s a good, rich biodiversity here, but it’s masking the graves,” he said.. “Our purpose was to maintain the integrity of the place, the biodiversity value, but then find where the graves are. We were hoping to find where the graves are and I think to a large degree we’ve managed that.” Historian with Waterford County Museum William Whelan said it is possible that up to 3,000 people are buried in the “long” Famine graves. “It’s hard to actually get across to people the scale of the disaster… We know that between 1845 and 1855, 3,000 people died in the workhouse system in Dungarvan alone, that’s not counting any deaths outside of the workhouse,” he said. “For me as a local historian, a lot of it is just to be reminded of the scale of the Famine. As communities we’ve forgotten how traumatic the famine was and this project is fantastic to bring it back into the public eye again.” A report is due to be submitted to the RIA next month.

Half tonne of beach rubbish removed AFTER a break in 2020, the Big Beach Clean took place between 17th and 19th September and Clean Coasts were overwhelmed with the incredible support and commitment shown in Waterford over the weekend. The Big Beach Clean is an annual call to action which takes place at the end of the summer bathing season. In county Waterford, volunteers organised cleanups in six different locations, removing over 500 kg of litter. Moreover, Clean Coasts joined Clean Coasts groups in several locations in the region, including Tramore, where two local groups — Tramore Tidy Towns and Tramore Eco Group — hosted two fantastic and very successful beach clean events, also as part of Vitamin Sea Festival. This year, a record number of over 400 clean-ups were organised by volunteers who removed 42 tonnes of litter across the country. In addition, more volunteers joined cleanups facilitated by Clean Coasts officers in eight different locations around Ireland. Sinead McCoy, Coastal Communities Manager, said: “After a break in 2020 due to Covid, we were excited to host the Big Beach Clean again, but we didn’t know what to expect. This year there was a significant increase in clean-ups organised, but in a different format: we saw more people registering for clean-ups as individuals or within their household.” Sinead continued: “This year,

there was an over 5% decrease in litter found across Ireland. Overall this is an incredible improvement. “The work that Irish volunteers do all year round to tackle litter and less waste dropped by more conscious beach users mean that we are heading in the right direction!” Big Beach Clean volunteers have also taken part in an excellent worldwide citizen science project, which will help shape future policies and campaigns to help protect our oceans. The project entails collecting litter on Irish beaches and filling in Clean Coasts’ Marine Litter Data Cards. This will help heighten awareness about the issue of marine litter and serve as an indicator of the magnitude of the problem. Once more, volunteers were asked to join the call to action, no matter how far from the coast, thanks to the involvement of An Taisce National Spring Clean programme. Statistics show that the number one cause of marine litter is litter dropped in towns and cities and getting involved in the Big Beach Clean has been a way for residents of non-coastal counties to help prevent litter entering our waterways tackle the problem at its source. Meanwhile, Cully and Sully supported the Big Beach Clean initiative again this year. “We were blown away by the amazing response to this year’s Big Beach Clean”, they said.

City Square on the market for €24.5m ONE of Waterford’s mostloved shopping centres has been placed on the market, with a guide price of €24.5m. City Square is perfectly located in the city centre, with pedestrian access from three points. There are two retail floors, including a two-storey department store that Debenhams used to occupy. The centre also has 34 retail units and kiosks and footfall averages around 110,000 a week. It currently brings in around €1.58m a year in rental income from tenants

including River Island, JD Sports, Peter Mark, GameStop, Peter Mark and Holland & Barrett. Anchor tenant, Dunnes Stores, is not included in the sale. The sale also includes the former Debenhams department store, which comprises 7,432sqm (80,000sq ft) of prime retail space over two floors. The facility has recently been upgraded and extended with a new food court, extra retail units and mall improvements. It also has direct access to 450 car parking spaces.

We’re down to the five best places to live!

Waterford has made it into the last five in the Irish Times Best Place to Live in Ireland 2021 competition. Ireland’s oldest city joins Galway City, Killarney, Clonakilty and the village of Glaslough in County Monaghan as they vie for the coveted title. Waterford was one of the 470 locations nominated by more than 2,400 people from across the 32 counties. The campaign began in June, when members of the public were invited to nominate their favourite place to live in Ireland. Earlier this month, Waterford was one of three cities that had made the top 20. Derry and Galway were the other two. Each location was then looked at by a panel of judges on specific criteria. These included community spirit, local services, diversity, transport links, vibrancy of the local economy, cost of living, safety and the unique ‘X factor’. The judges have visited each

location over the past few weeks. Waterford was put forward as a city which “hits the sweet spot for size: not too small, not too big. Most amenities, from shopping to cliff walks, are within 15 minutes of the city. Tramore and Dunmore East are hubs for surfing, sailing and all things in between, and the Waterford Greenway has opened up the region. “There’s a booming IT and pharma sector, and the local housing market provides many reasonable options for all types of housing.” The Irish Times was also full of praise for the city, saying: “Nobody here was surprised to hear Waterford was being considered as one of the best places to live in Ireland. It isn’t perfect, and suffers from the same problems as other cities, though perhaps on a smaller scale. It continued: “But what it lacks in those attributes, it

makes up for with its rich history, walkability, liveability and the ease of access to outdoor amenities.” Affordability was also a deciding factor in the panel’s choice, and Waterford performed well. Property prices are just one of several measures judges applied in choosing the Best Place to Live, but in the midst of a housing crisis they are an important consideration. They visited villages where houses are quite cheap, and city suburbs where property is out of most people’s reach. In Waterford, the average current asking price is above the Government definition of an affordable home in the city, the judges said. Nevertheless, there are 51 houses at or below the affordable level of €250,000, and 44 of these are €200,000 or less. Affordability and variety of supply are good in Waterford city, they said. The winner will be revealed on Saturday, September 25th.

Mount Sion upgrades path for easy access to Play Park MOUNT Sion GAA club is to receive a public safety investment by Waterford Council to install a brand new footpath, as well as various ancillary works, to improve access to the new Community Play Park. The funding will come from a council-operated Slaintecare fund that is geared towards shovel-ready projects to improve access to, and promote a healthier lifestyle for, Waterford City communities based in areas of general social deprivation.

Local Fianna Fail Councillor Eamon Quinlan, who put the project in for funding and attended the onsite meeting, said: “Our community department, who part financed the new Play Park, are well aware of just how popular it has become and how it is a true meeting place for families from all over. “As such, when funding became available to improve the infrastructure in the area, it was a no brainer. The footpath will be longer than a full pitch and will cost a pretty

penny but it’s very much worth doing. We will be going from the top of Oznam Street to the main car park adjacent to the Play Park near the Marian Park entrance.” The area has been a resounding success and now hosts community game events, a recycling centre, facility for physiotherapy, a social centre, yoga classes and outdoor coffee dock with picnic benches. The Club and Council are reminding people that it is a free public asset and no club affiliation is required.

Each of us threw City to away €365 in food wheel out new bike during Covid BELIEVE it or not, the average household throws out just under one tonne of rubbish each year — which is around the weight of a small car! Now, a new study has found that Waterford shoppers threw away almost €365 worth of food each during the Covid-19 lockdowns. A third of Irish adults (36%) bought more food during the lockdowns, with one in three of these adults stating they wasted or threw out more food during lockdown restrictions compared to ‘normal’ prepandemic times. However, despite food wastage increasing nationwide, three out of 10 adults reported knowing someone who struggled to buy food, had to make sacrifices to pay for food, or had to avail of a food bank during the pandemic.The study, by Coyne Research on behalf of Aldi, showed that between March 2020 and August 2021, charities sought 53% more food donations compared with the previous 18 months, with 4,822 tonnes of food — equating to 11.5 million meals

— distributed through retail partners and FoodCloud hubs during this time. Aldi has just launched its 2021 Food for Good campaign, whereby shoppers can buy and leave food donations in their local Aldi store, which will be collected and distributed to local charities by FoodCloud. Starting on October 4 and running until October 10, Aldi shoppers can donate food items to one of the ‘Food for Good’ drop-off points in Aldi stores. “It is clear from our survey and FoodCloud’s experience that Covid-19 has exacerbated the issues of food waste and food insecurity. Aldi was the first retailer to donate nonsurplus food to FoodCloud at the height of the pandemic and is committed to playing its role in continuing to support FoodCloud to combat these problems through Food for Good,” Aldi Group Buying Director John Curtin, said. “We are asking Aldi shoppers to help us in by making a donation at our stores. The food donated will be distributed to over 233 partner charities.”

THE National Transport Authority is launching a new public bike scheme in Waterford City, which will see up to 14 docking stations distributed across the city for members of the public to use. Bikes will be available to hire 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, so residents and visitors can always access the bikes when they need one. Every bike comes with a useful basket on the front for a small bag, back and front lights which are lit whenever the bike is ridden. The bikes have continuously variable gearing, which allows the rider to constantly adjust the gearing to the cycling circumstances and offers a smooth, seamless shifting with no steps. There is an Anti-Theft lock on the bike, if you need to leave the bike unattended for short periods. Annual subscriptions start at €10 and a three-day paass will cost €3. IF you have any inspirational ideas as to how Waterford’s Medieval City Walls should look, then Waterford City and County Council wants to hear from you. The council has commissioned an Interpretation Plan for the Waterford Medieval City Walls and is inviting input from members of the public. The Medieval City Walls and Towers have a huge influence on the character of Waterford, while also providing a tangible link to the story of Ireland’s first city. However, there is very little interpretation of the Walls and Towers, their significance and the stories associated with them. The Interpretation Plan has been made possible with funding from The Heritage Council and the team leading the initiative would like to hear from members of the public about the relationship they have with Waterford City’s medieval walls. Waterford credit unions to invest in housing

WATERFORD Credit Unions have been given the green light to invest in approved social housing units. A newly established CU AHB Fund (Credit Union Approved Housing Body Fund) will oversee up to an €800m investment in social and affordable homes, with an initial investment of €200m in the next 12 months. This fund is a collaboration between Credit Unions and Tier 3 AHB’s and paves the way for Credit Unions in Waterford to invest in Tier 3 AHBs. Tier 3 AHBS are developments of more than 300 units which include the use of loan finance for development. The announcement has been widely welcomed for its collaborative approach to helping solve the housing crisis. The initial planned investment of €200m by Credit Unions will allow for the delivery of upwards of 1,000 homes, with the fund ultimately approved for investment of up to €800m in the medium to long term.

Approved Housing Bodies now have a new competitive lending partner that is aligned with their own values and objectives, while Credit Unions get to put their members’ money towards a productive important local initiative. “It also frees up significant Government resources to address other essential projects, while providing much-needed homes. In essence this is the cooperative model operating at the highest level with ordinary people coming together and helping each other,” he said.

You might be waiting a while for that train, minister ...

amon Ryan wants a high speed train from Cork to Letterkenny. I don’t want to worry the Environment Minister, but in this country you can wait an awfully long time for a train. While you’re waiting, minister, here are a few figures you might ponder. Japan’s famous Bullet Train has achieved a top speed of 581km/h and averages 300km/h. France’s TGV beats that with an average speed of 574km/h as it glides from Marseille to Paris. In China, the Harmony Express has a more modest top speed of 350km/h but still averages a pretty nippy 250km/h between Beijing and Shanghai. Ireland’s intercity trains travel at around 45km/h on average. Their top speeds really don’t matter because none of them

ever reaches top speed or anything like it. On some stretches of line they will exceed 120km/h, and you may see them pass cars travelling at this speed, the legal limit for a motorway. At other times, trains may be overtaken by a cyclist or even a pedestrian. Sometimes, for no obvious

reason, they come to a complete halt and wait for a while. I have calculated the average speed from the departure and arrival times given on Irish Rail timetables, but these averages are almost as meaningless as the top speeds for, as any regular Irish Rail user will tell you, intercity trains rarely stick to schedule. General inefficiency apart, there is one clear reason why Irish Rail’s trains travel so slowly: they are using an infrastructure that is not fit for purpose. Most of the routes, for most of their length, have a single track running in each direction, so any breakdown has a lengthy knock-on effect. If an inter-city train is late it will hold up commuter trains which use the same track. If commuter trains are given priority, the inter-city services have to wait, which is why they often crawl into stations or

come to a complete halt a little outside them. If Minister Ryan’s train from Cork to Letterkenny travels at current intercity speeds the trip would take about 10 hours. The journey by car, allowing for a couple of stops, takes around six hours, so I don’t think there would be any rush for train tickets. But, there again, I doubt if many people want to go from Cork to Letterkenny. What many of us would like to do is to travel by rail, at a reasonable speed, on the relatively short distances between our main cities. To achieve this, governments need to spend money updating the service we have, not waste it on routes nobody wants. And we are talking about a huge amount of money to make Mr Ryan’s dream come true. For more than a decade now, the British government has been struggling with plans for

a high-speed rail link between London and Leeds, in the north of England. It still hasn’t got past Birmingham and probably never will, because the cost is so enormous. It rises by the month - a bit like the price of our children’s hospital - and is now put at more than €110 billion. If the British project is ever completed it will join London, which has a population of just under 10 million, with Leeds (pop 780,000), passing through several large cities on the way. The final destination for Mr Ryan’s dream line is Letterkenny, with a population of just 16,900. But the lack of potential passengers will not reduce the price of getting a track there. If it costs €110 billion in England, you can bet your life it will be no cheaper here. There is no demand in Letterkenny for a direct line to Cork.

What people there would like is the reopening of an old rail link to Derry, the nearest city. With the co-operation of the Northern Ireland Executive that would be quite feasible and is the sort of project money should be spent on. Reopening the Wexford to Waterford line would be another good investment. Irish Rail needs direct links between more of its lines, so that every service doesn’t have to run through Dublin. It needs more track and more platforms at the bigger stations. It needs more carriages, because so many trains are recklessly overcrowded. And it needs expansion of its freight service. All this can be achieved for a lot less than €110 billion. I doubt if even that expenditure would get us a rail line from Cork to Letterkenny but might be a fast track to the international bankruptcy court.

A sea of sunflowers at The Bee Sanctuary of Ireland (Photo Justin Ivory) Nestled deep in the southwest corner of Wicklow on the border with Wexford there is a field. Nothing unusual there, this is farming country after all. Ah yes but this field is a bit different. It is full of Sunflowers. A field full of magnificent 8ft tall Sunflowers in Ireland in September! Are you mad? A field full of Sunflowers! Is this for the cutflower industry? Nope. These flowers will not be cut and sold. They are being grown for food. Food? Are sunflowers edible? No… well not by humans anyway. They are being grown to provide food for bees and other pollinators. Ah ok… so it’s somebody with an apiary and trying to produce loads of honey. No… there are no artificial beehives or honey production here. So, what is going on? This is the Bee Sanctuary of Ireland. This is 55 acres of the Wicklow countryside being planted with field after field of wildflowers to feed all our wonderful wild pollinators – bumblebees, solitary bees, wasps, hoverflies, and butterflies. It is ponds and wetlands, unkempt and uncut hedgerows, copses, brambles, nettles, thistles – a wild and re-wilded haven for all our biodiversity. A refuge not just for bees but all manner of biodiversity – birds of prey hunt overhead, squadrons of dragonflies and damselflies patrol their territories, hedgehogs, stoats, squirrels, deer and all manner of birds and invertebrates.

HAVING been exiled from the neverending saga that is Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey Buckingham decided to just go and make an album and call it after himself for the Hell of it. This is his seventh solo work and was originally slated for a 2018 release, but what with falling out with ex-partner Stevie Nicks, being sacked from Fleetwood Mac, undergoing open-heart surgery and the collapse of his marriage, he was otherwise fairly busy. Surprisingly, despite the turmoil, his knack for catchy pop hasn’t waned.

2021 is the Irish Georgian Society Year of the Country House Garden and Waterford artist Andrea Jameson features in an exhibition celebrating four hundred years of Irish gardens and designed landscapes. Stepping Through the Gate: Inside Ireland’s Walled Gardens, takes place from 23rd September - 26th November 2021 at City Assembly House, 58 South William Street, Dublin 2, where fifty specially commissioned paintings of Irish Walled Gardens will be on display, including the above by Jameson of Tourin.

SUNDAY (September 26th) is National Walking Day and the St Declan’s Way Committee are marking the day with a 10km walk around the seaside village of Ardmore. The walk promises bracing sea air, plenty of stories and tales, and magnificent scenery. Starting on Halla Deagláin on Main Street, the walk proceeds north along the beach, loops around by Ballynamertinagh and Bóthar Ard, back into the village and then around the spectacular Cliff Walk. Presidents Prize 2021 Last weekend saw the staging of our final major of 2021 when our President Mr David Condon hosted his presidents prize for 2021. The 18 hole event was played over two days in brilliant sunshine and attracted a large entry on both days. As it transpired the big scores came in on Saturday with a number of players reaching the 40 point mark. However, it was long time member Phil Kinsella (20) who carded a magnificent 43points to pip Martin O Driscoll (17) by a single point. Colm O Callaghan (8) won the gross prize on a countback. The presentation took place on Sunday evening with David’s family, friends and prizewinners present. Our captain Edward Hickey welcomed David and his family and acknowledged David Condons contribution to West Waterford down through the years. David was loud in his praise of the condition of the course and thanked all responsible. He also expressed his gratitude to everyone who helped with the staging of the presidents prize and to everyone who had played in the event. As David presented the magnificent Criostal na Rinne trophy to the 2021 champion Phil Kinsella it marked the end of another successful year at West Waterford golf club. More significantly it was also marking the end of an era in our club as we look forward in confidence to a new and exciting future. New Ross With the home course closed for coring and sanding, we took off on a “Trip to Tipp” on Tuesday and Wednesday last. We were based at the picturesque Dundrum Golf Club situated on the banks of the Multeen River made famous by the ballad group “Ryan’s Fancy” some years ago. Here, we were greeted like long lost friends by Dolores Thornton in reservations and by club professional, Marion Riordan. The weather, accommodation, and the food, was also top-class, and it certainly was a bargain at the price. Our own group were delighted to be joined by our club captain, Mr Sean Furlong, who like the rest of us thoroughly enjoyed the break and of course the golf and the card game. We played on a long beautifully manicured course which provided a stern test of our golfing capabilities. This was where a long hitter off the

tee was needed and we did our best to facilitate all teams in this regard. Monster greens, one in particular measuring 49 yards from back to front gave all a chance on being on the dance floor in regulation. Day one saw exceptional scoring on this strange course although some members may have played it before. Taking the honours were, Billy Redmond (24), John F Roche (26), Jim Kehoe (29) and Donie Cody (31) with a cracking total of 105 points. There was a tie for second place on 99 points, but Mossy Ryan (13), Tony Sexton (26), John Joe Murray (26) and Tom Kent (29) edged it by virtue of a better back nine (52/51). The third spot on the same score (99 points) went to Jim “Ross” Ryan (21), Willie Wallace (23), Jamesie Wallace (26) and Jamesie Murphy (29). Day two saw changed teams and this time round, Mossy Ryan (13), Tony Sexton (26), Jim Kehoe (29) and Donie Cody (31) clinched the number one spot with another great score of 105 points. Again, we had a tie for second place before Captain, Sean Furlong (14), Jamesie Wallace (26), John Joe Murray (26) and Tom Kent (29) were the runners-up on 98 points again having the better back nine (47/46) over Denis Kirwan (20), Pat Coady (21), Jamesie Murphy (29) and Paddy Bennett (29) who also clocked in with 98 points.
