City flies the flag to show its Pride WATERFORD rallied to support its gay community in response to a number of homophobic incidents across the city. Pride Flags, in the rainbow colours that symbolise LGBT equality, were destroyed on two occasions and posters boasting about ‘Straight Pride’ were placed around the city. But the rainbow flags on The Mall went up for a third time on Monday - and they have been flying at many other sites, including business premises, the Waterford Treasures museum, Tramore Amusement Park and Garda stations in the city and Dungarvan. City Hall was floodlit in the rainbow colours and the landmark Misery Rock has become Pride Rock. temporarily taking on some of the rainbow colours. Bank of Ireland was among the businesses speaking up for the LGBT community. Keep eye out for nesting Swifts
THEY are the lightning raiders of the bird world and they visit us for a brief time every summer, catching insects in mid-flight. Much is known about the locations of nesting Swifts in the west of Waterford county due to the efforts of West Waterford Eco Group . But little is known about where Swifts nest in Waterford city and towns and villages in the east of the county. So if you are aware of a street or a building where Swifts nest in Waterford city, Tramore, Dunmore East or other localities, BirdWatch Ireland is asking you to email the information to swifts@birdwatchireland.ie. Swifts are sometimes confused with Swallows and House Martins but have no white underparts as both the others do. Swallows build their halfcup nests in a shed or lean-too, while House Martins build their mud dome under the eaves of a house. Swifts nest in cavities so the nest cannot easily be seen.
Bio giant picks city as first site for production
A MAJOR pharmacutical company is establishing a manufacturing base in Waterford. Horizon Therapeutics is to buy the plant operated by EirGen Pharma in IDA Ireland’s business park. Horizon will retain the 40 staff employed there and increae the number by a further 50. It is the company’s first move directly into manufacturing in Ireland. The announcement was welcomed as an important addition to Waterford’s manufacturing strength. Fianna Fáil TD and Minister of State, Mary Butler, said: “It is a really positive indication that a company of this stature, with such an established presence, has decided to expand its Irish operations in a regional location and further underlines the depth of the abundant talent pool in this sector within the region.” Horizon has had its global headquarters in Dublin since 2014 . Fine Gael senator John Cummins said it was great to the see the expansion. “This is a fantastic vote of confidence in Waterford and adds greatly to our growing biopharma sector here in the South East,” he said. “There is ample room for expansion of the existing plant and I wish
Horizon every success with their ambitious growth plans in the time ahead.”. “ The Waterford operation, which is supported by IDA Ireland, will produce products for Horizon’s rare, autoimmune and severe inflammatory disease portfolio. Horizon’s chairman, president and chief executive, Tim Walbert, said the Waterford plant will add to the company’s network of contract manufacturing organisations and will play an important role in its global expansion. “We look forward to leveraging our existing technical operations expertise in Ireland, along with the expertise of the EirGen employees, to build a robust and effective manufacturing operation that will enable us to meet the unmet needs of people impacted by rare diseases around the world,” he said. MORE JOBS: Waterford is one of several sites where McDonald’s is increasing the staff. The restaurant chain is recruiting 800 staff, bringing its Irish worforce to above 6,000. It is also recruting for restaurants in Kilenny, Carlow, Tipperary, Wexford, Dublin and 12 other counties.
Wall art moves to a global audience WATERFORD’S Walls Project has gone international. As part of the Brightening Air/Coiscéim Coiligh Festival, people all over the world are now able to download the free Bepart app and see a selection of murals in the city . They experience moving mural artwork animated by students from St Pauls Community College, Waterford, and Limerick School of Art and Design. “We are delighted to be part of this great festival experience with Brightening Air, and are so excited to share this fantastic new way of accessing art,” said Edel Tobin, Founder and Artistic Director of The Walls
Project. “The students really went above and beyond, working together to create some really fantastic animated artwork, and we just can’t wait for everyone with a smartphone to be able to access it.” The Walls Project says the app will bring art to the public in a new and engaging way, “experimenting with and extending the possibilities of public art, and making street art relevant, accessible and free in real life and online to the public”. You can download the Bepart free smartphone app via the App store and Play store, via the Waterford Walls QR codes on every mural in the city, or by going to linktr.ee/WaterfordWalls

Whiskey wears art on its sleeve
ARTIST Leah Hewson has created an original work for the label of The Cuvée, a new whiskey from Waterford Distillery. She says the work, called Binary Assimilation, reflects the many layers and complexities within the distillation process for the whiskey, which will be launched in the autumn. Two computer-generated images, depicted in paint, have been divided into strips and overlaid with opaque and transparent red and green stripes, and a neon squiggle . “Binary Assimilation celebrates the many layers and complexities of Waterford’s approach to whiskey production,” says the artist, whose exhibitions include Ammo Veil at the Hillsboro Fine Art gallery and Scrintilla at The Royal Hibemian Academy. Leah Hewson won the Whyte’s Award for painting at the 190th RHA Annual Exhibition and was shortlisted for the Hennessy Craig Biennial Award. Her uncle, Paul Hewson, is better known as Bono.

A musical lesson for Van the Mad Man
I
N 1964, Ivan Morrison formed a band with four other lads from around Belfast. I knew a couple of them. We weren’t mates, for they were a few years older and, in your teens, three or four years is a huge gap. But I knew them to see, was friends with somebody’s brother, and I was excited when I heard they had made a record and had gone to England to promote it. Baby Please Don’t Go was not an immediate success and Them, with Van on sax and vocals, returned to Ireland and were playing around small venues. That’s when I saw the band play the most exciting gig I have ever been at. It was in the unlikely setting of a crown green bowling clubhouse in the seaside town of Bangor. The tiny hall was
Michael Wolsey packed to an extent that would horrify any modern health and safety officer. The stage, a temporary arrangement made partly of packing cases, was in constant danger of being trampled. The band hardly had room to move but that didn’t stop them playing. And god, they were great! In an era when Irish music was dominated by showbands and schmaltz, these lads were hammering out rock
and blues. Van was a mesmerizing little figure on the rickety stage. I particularly remember his Gloria (consigned to B-side obscurity by the record producers), a version that seemed to go on forever. In the middle of this smallclub tour Baby Please Don’t Go shot up the British charts and Van and the lads went back to England and on to greater things. His music has remained one of the loves of my life and he has given the world some wonderful work. So I am sorry to see him morph into an ageing eccentric, the sort of nutty old uncle you try to avoid at family gatherings. He was always prickly, but the pressures of Covid lockdown appear to have pushed him beyond the edge of reason, as demonstrated in a track he
released last year, called No More Lockdown, which talks of “scientists making up crooked facts’ ‘. Covid 19 has killed close to four million people around the world. And that’s a plain fact, nothing crooked about it. “No more lockdown,” sings Van, in lines that could be taken from the handbook of the conspiracy theorists who believe reptilians are trying to take over the world. “No more government overreach. No more fascist bullies, disturbing our peace, pretending it’s for our safety, when it’s really to enslave.” It was these words - not Van himself - which Stormont’s health minister Robin Swann called ‘very dangerous’, provoking an extraordinary and rather nasty rant from the singer, who was joined by Ian Pais-
ley Jnr on a stage at Belfast’s Europa hotel. Side by side with Mr Paisley, Van the Man erupted into Van the Mad Man. Just a few hours earlier, another northerner had surprised us with a musical contribution. Arlene Foster bowed out as DUP leader with a verse from Sinatra. “That’s life,” she sang at a press conference. “That’s what all the people say. You’re riding high in April, shot down in May.” That little musical moment revealed a nicer side to Ms Foster than she had previously shown to the public. She has an ability to laugh at herself - a quality Van Morrison has never displayed - and she hasn’t a bad singing voice either. Van Morrison has suggested that Ms Foster should be arrested for singing at a public
event. In the world of Northern Ireland politics stranger things have happened. And Van, by his rant with Mr Paisley, has made himself part of that world. Maybe Jeffrey Donaldson will nominate him for First Minister. Van said Arlene Foster had “banned singing in any shape or form in this country”. On his YouTube channel he warned: “I personally am not just going to take this lying down.” You know Van, I think a wee lie-down wouldn’t be a bad idea at all. Lie down and calm down and then, maybe, come back and join the rest of us in the real world. And while you’re recovering, Van, you might reflect on Arlene Foster’s behaviour. She can’t teach you anything about singing but she could give you a lesson in grace and good manners.

A Good Year for the Roses
Rose-coloured Starling on June 3 (Photo Justin Ivory) We are not talking flowers here but birds that are even more stunning than the bloom. Over the last two weeks Ireland has seen an invasion of Rose-coloured Starlings (Pastor roseus) with sightings of birds in 11 counties so far. I was delighted to catch up with a group of three at my local patch in Kilcoole on June 3. The same size and shape as our Common Starling (Sturnus vulgaris), Rose-coloured Starlings have a pink body with glossy black head, wings and tail, pinkish beak, and pale orange legs. These birds breed in easternmost Europe and south Asia, and winter in India and tropical Asia. They are prone to periodic irruptions where relatively large numbers migrate well beyond their normal range and end-up in western Europe, the UK and Ireland. It is believed these irruptions are linked to changes in the populations of their favourite food-source locusts and grasshoppers. These irruptions are happening more regularly and appear to be linked with warmer, calmer, more settled late-spring conditions across the continent, conditions that are become more regular because of climate change. There were irruptions in 2018 and again in 2020 and now 2021 is seeing another such irruption. The other change that is being seen is that typically these birds usually show up singly, but there are more occurrences of multi-individual sightings starting to come through such as the three birds seen at Kilcoole, Wicklow and Donegal this June, and several sightings of two birds together. The record number of Rose-coloured Starlings seen together in Ireland was five back in 2002. The species has also slowly been expanding its range and has started colonising parts of Bulgaria and Romania since 2000. In 2020 Rose-coloured Starlings bred in France for the first time after 20 pairs settled in a colony in the Alpes-deHaute-Provence region, with 15 pairs having active nests. Maybe in the future if they start visiting Ireland in larger groups the same could happen here.

the shape of history Thursday June 24, 10.15pm (RTE 1)
once upon a time in hollywood Netflix (early July)
IN Rememberings , O’Connor tells her story in her own way — the heartache of growing up in a family falling apart; her early forays into the Dublin music scene; her adventures and misadventures in the world of sex, drugs and rock’n’roll; the fulfilment of being a mother; her ongoing spiritual quest — and through it all, her abiding passion for music. Rememberings is intimate, replete with candid anecdotes and full of hard-won insights. It is a unique and remarkable chronicle by a unique and remarkable artist. So please do not send her to the Eurovision . . . whoever thought that would be a good idea?
Internationally acclaimed sculptor and artist Rowan Gillespie has been commissioned to create a very special project – a set of sculptures for Hobart’s waterfront in Tasmania, depicting and honouring the untold story of the Irish female convicts and their children who came to Hobart Town from Ireland. Using local women and children as models he creates a living link between past and present and reignites emotional and historic ties between Ireland and Tasmania. This absorbing documentary follows Gillespie as he finds the inspiration for his work.
FINALLY on Netflix, Tarantino’s excellent revisionist movies folows actor Rick Dalton, who gained fame and fortune by starring in a 1950s television Western, but is now struggling to find meaningful work in a Hollywood that he doesn’t recognise anymore. He spends most of his time drinking and palling around with Cliff Booth, his easy going best friend and longtime stunt double. Rick also happens to live next door to Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate — the filmmaker and budding actress whose futures will forever be altered by members of the Manson Family. Expect mayhem to break lose — just not the way you actually expect it.

Wicklow Wolf’s Darryl Murphy said: “Our head brewer Peter Reynier, the first ever Wicklow Wolf employee, is leaving us at the end of May to move to France with his fiancee. This was the first beer he brewed for us, and will be the last beer that he brews for us.” Well, it was nice having you Peter. Thanks for the beermories.
THIS surely will be the last piece of outdoor garden furniture you will buy this year, so it’s only right to make it a good one. At their best, the Kings sound deceptively effortless, and while the facade is sometimes too smooth, it’s brilliantly evocative. What harm in that?
depaul sleepout ie.depaulcharity.org/event/sleep-out-fordepaul-2021/ YOU are all warmly invited — get it? — to brave the elements on Friday, the 25th of June, by swapping your cosy bed for a sleeping bag to take take part in Depaul’s Sleep Out. The event will help raise funds for people experiencing homelessness. You can help by hosting your own Sleep Out in your back garden. All funds raised will ensure that Depaul can continue to support vulnerable individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Register online.
the laughs of your life www.podbean.com THE Laughs of your Life is a podcast with Doireann Garrihy at the helm. The series has almost reached its end, but you can still play catch-up and, well, have a laugh. Doireann delves into the beauty of having a laugh, speaking to guests from all walks of life. From first memories of laughter to being laughed at to “if I didn’t laugh I’d cry” moments, these markers will shape the interviews, bringing out the best in some of Ireland’s most influential people.

In Loving Memory
Acknowledgement Stanley COUCH
4th Anniversary Michael Drohan
Unseen and unheard but always near, So loved, so missed, so very dear
2nd Anniversary Teresa O’DoNoHue
way, For all eternity. - Loved and missed Mam by your loving son Ger, Autumn and Lily
In loving memory of Stanley Couch, late of Elm Park, Tramore. Couch, Stanley, Elm Park, Tramore. Stan’s wife Eilis, daughter Fiona, sons Fergus and Justin, grandchildren, Zoe, Ronan, Donal, Jody, Gaby and Scott, son-in-law Padraig, daughters-in-law, Vicki and Marina, and extended family express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to all who sympathised with us in our sad loss. Thank you to those who sent messages, mass and sympathy cards, letters, floral tributes, texts and emails and left wonderful messages and memories online. To those who could not be present but joined with us in the celebration of Stan’s funeral Mass on live stream and all who accompanied Stan on his journey from his home to the Church, thank you. To Sean Hennessy for his wonderful music, Fr. Tadeusz who celebrated the funeral Mass and the Reverend Trevor Sargent who presided over Stan’s burial and to undertaker, Patrick Hennessy for his professionalism and advice, our thanks. Our gratitude to all the medical teams who provided care, Dr. El Hassadi and the staff of the Cherry Ward, UHW, Dr. Nolan and Tramore Medical Centre, Paul Kenny, Pharmacist, the palliative care team and all the carers who were wonderful especially Tanya, Melanie, Michelle and Jackie. As it is impossible to thank everyone individually, we hope that this acknowledgement will be accepted by all as a token of our appreciation. The holy sacrifice of the mass has been offered for your intentions.
26th Anniversary PADDY FOLEY
In loving memory of Paddy Foley, late of 32 Newport Square, who died on June 22nd 1995. The Lord bless you and keep you, May He show His face to you, And have mercy, May He turn His countenance to you, And give you peace. The Lord bless you and keep you. -Always remembered by your loving family.
In loving memory of Teresa O’Donohue late of Larchville, and Killure Bridge, whose anniversary occurs on 24th June. We were we, Before we became you and I. We heard the rhythm of your heart From the inside. At birth the cord was snipped Placed on your chest. You took your five babies, Home to nest. We were born rich, In love and laughter. We have the family bond It’s all that really matters. All along the way, There were trials and tribulations. You sang your heart out. At every celebration. For you their was nothing. We wouldn’t do. You are the rythem of our hearts And we love you. We drove a thousand miles, Just to be together. You never once complained. You battled on and braved the weather. The mortal cord now snipped, The bond remains unbroken. In heaven hear our hearts. If any words were left unspoken. As God whispered low your name Angels sang Amazing Grace. Our Gerry took your hand Your Mother kissed your face. Your Father held you tight. Lucy and Laurence danced Surrounded by pure love now In another land Tears they fall for you, Like rivers from our eyes. Your the Phoenix from the ashes. Fly free now in blue skies. Grief a gift from love. And parting such sweet sorrow. I miss you much today Mam. I’ll miss you more tommorrow. - Always Loved and missed From your sons and daughters It’s been 2 long years without you Mam, our lives have changed so much. I know that you are all around, sometimes I can feel your touch. And for a minute when I am still, I think of all the good times we had, before you got ill. I know that you are “pulling strings” like favours from above, But Mam all that I can do for you is remember, pray and love. - Always remembered Always loved and always missed The World may never notice, If a snow drop doesn’t bloom, Or even pause to wonder, If the petals fall too soon. But every life that ever forms, Or even comes to be, Touches the world in some small
Shortly after midnight, She danced along the beach, Moonlight made her hair shine Bare her golden feet. She sang a happy song Her eyes they seemed to smile All in the world was right, If only for a while. One of your favourite sayings Mam was “Enjoy the good times while you can”, We trust in God and keep on going, For he surely has a plan. We sang as you set sail, Home again across the sea. You sailed lifes stormy waters Heaven set you free. - Always loved and missed by your daughter Joanna Damien and Nicole When God sends his angel down from above, To bring home to Heaven the Mother you Love. Its hard to have faith when your Hearts full of pain. And you wonder what’s the point, When your Worlds not the same. On my darkest days Mam, I called to you for a sign. You said look out the window. There, four siblings of mine. Together as always. Close by through the tears. We’ve laughed and we’ve cried Our way through these two years. Yet there’s Love always Love, What a bless-ed thing. God reunites, Till then, Hear us sing. Have I told you lately that I love you. - Always loved and missed Mam, by your son John Paul The angels gathered near your side, So very close to you, For they knew of the suffering, That you were going true. I thought about so many things, As i held tightly to your hand, Oh how I wished that you were strong, And happy once again. But your eyes were looking homeward, To that place beyond the sky, Where Jesus held his outstretched arms, It was time to say goodbye. I struggled with my selfish thoughts, For i wanted you to stay. So we could walk and talk again, Like we did..just yesterday. But Jesus knew the answer, And i knew you loved him so, So I gave to you lifes greatest gift, The gift of letting go. - Always loved and missed by Tracey & Eoin Dont think of her as gone away, Her journey has just begun. Life holds many facets, The Earth is only one. Just think of her as resting, From the sorrows and the tears, In a place of warmth and comfort, Where there are no days and years. Think how she must be wishing, That we could know today,
7th Anniversary PAULA BERGIN How nothing but our sadness, Can really pass away. And think of her as living, In the hearts of Those she touched. For nothing loved, Is ever lost, And she was loved So much. - Missed by your grandkids Patrick Letisha & Tianna I wish you sweet sleep, my sister dear. Although there’s so much that you’ve left bare, I hate that you had to endure such pain. On my mind, your saddened eyes have left a stain. I want to know what crossed your mind. Unspoken words you’ve left behind. Undone things we’ll never do. No sharing thoughts you never knew. A peace has fallen upon your head, A taste of sorrow we have been fed. It really is like a hole in our lives, One swiftly dug but carved out by knives. But I have hope that those sleeping will rise. The Bible says that God will open their eyes. No suffering, sickness, yes not even pain. Those who did good, eternal life they’ll gain. So...sleep on, my dear sister; sleep tight, For now with you the sky is night. But after night will come daybreak. Therefore, I will wait hoping to see you awake. - From Always in my thoughts and prayers, your loving Sister Mary; brother-in-law Thomas; nieces Rebecca, Elaine, Laura, Catherine; nephew Tim; grandnieces; grandnephews and extended family. I wish you sweet sleep, my sister dear. Although there’s so much that you’ve left bare, I hate that you had to endure such pain. On my mind, your saddened eyes have left a stain. I want to know what crossed your mind. Unspoken words you’ve left behind. Undone things we’ll never do. No sharing thoughts you never knew. The lonely stars are shining on a grave not far away, Where I laid my husband Michael, four years ago today.
