Munster cycle raises €522,201 A grand total of €522,201 has been raised for the Munster branches of Down Syndrome Ireland, following this year’s Tour de Munster Charity Cycle which passed through Waterford in August. The total was revealed at a recent cheque presentation with cycling legend and long term supporter of the Tour, Sean Kelly. Sean, who celebrated his 16th Tour de Munster, once again led the 150 cyclists through villages and towns of Waterford, Tipperary, Limerick, Clare, Cork and Kerry, covering an average of 150 km per day.
Vaccine rates soar
HSE figures reveal Waterford has the highest vaccination rate of any county nationwide for adults, teenagers and children aged 12 years and older. According to the latest data, 99.7pc of people aged 18 and older who live in Waterford are fully vaccinated, while 96.8pc of teenagers and children aged 12 and above have also completed a Covid-19 vaccine course. The south and east come out on top, with Carlow, Wexford, Tipperary and Wicklow close behind Waterford in the rankings for both categories.
Green Flags awarded for our ‘wonders of nature’
NOT only did we retain our two Green Flags for the Waterford Greenway and Kilbarry Nature Park, but Kilbarry Nature Park was also chosen as the overall winner in the Pollinator Projector Award in the 2021 Green Flag Awards. The nature park is located upon the site of a rehabilitated landfill site, so
it is great to see that a former environmental problem for Waterford has evolved instead into an environmental asset. Fergus Galvin, Director of Services Waterford City and County Council, highlighted the excellent work done by the presentation staff in securing this award, saying “this award is testament to
the great effort shown by them.” He added: “These awards not only showcase the calibre of wonderful natural amenities that we have in Waterford, they also highlight the importance of shared public spaces as a place for people to relax and meet up safely outdoors, and experience the wonder of nature on our doorstep.”
Winterval to light up city again

Census ‘22 offers jobs that count with pay of €3,200
IT’s that time again — Census time — and with it comes some very worthwhile job opportunities, as the Central Statistics Office (CSO) has announced it needs to hire 124 Census Enumerators in Waterford to deliver and collect census forms next year. Enumerators will nee to be available to work for 10 weeks part-time, between 28 February and 6 May 2022. Census 2022 will take place on Sunday, 3 April next year. The results from the Census are vital to planning the future of public services in Waterford and across the country. To deliver a successful Census the team of 124 enumerators will be required to deliver and collect census forms to approximately 43,000 households across the county. Speaking about the role of a Census Enumerator, Eileen Murphy, Head of Census Administration, said: “A Census Enumerator is a job that really counts. Those who undertake this rewarding position will be providing a valuable service to the people of Waterford, by ensuring future policy decisions are made based on their community’s needs. “The job of Census Enumerator is highly flexible, so a perfect option for many people not in a position to commit to full time work. Over
the 10 weeks enumerators will work approximately 22 hours per week and can largely pick their own hours. Each enumerator is responsible for the delivery and collection of around 400 census forms in their local area.” According to Ms Murphy the role of Census Enumerator is best suited to a people-person who enjoys meeting and engaging with new people. “It is important that you can work well on your own. The job does require some persistence, as you may need to visit some homes multiple times to secure a response. Good weather in spring in Ireland is not guaranteed, so you need to be ready for working outdoors in all weathers. The application process is expected to remain open until 3 December. However early applications are recommended as the CSO will cease taking applications once they have reached the required number. The online application process is available at www.census.ie. The hours are flexible, approximately 22 hours per week. Typically, this will include evenings and weekends (when people are most likely to be at home). Enumerators can expect to earn €3,200 gross on average over this 10-week period and must be aged at least 18.
B is for . . . nearly every dog in town
THERE seems to be a bit of a thing for the second letter of the alphabet when it comes to the naming of pet dogs in Waterford, with Bella, Belle, Benji, Bosco and Rolo emerging as the favourite names. The poll, by Petmania, also showed a rising trend for names as Gaeilge, with Puca, Suile, and Poiginí making the list. The survey also shows that many of Waterford’s
new four-legged friends are named after gods and mythical characters, like Athena, Ares, Zeus, Loki and Apollo. Pet parents also gave a nod to designer brands, Dior and Coco, plus some well-know celebrities like Bowie, Wonka, Rambo, Indiana, Ice Cube and Simba. Bo-Jo Carrol was named Waterford Puppy of the Year, while top dog when it comes to breeds is the Golden Retriever.

State-of-the-art pilot boat arrives in Port of Waterford PROUDLY named ‘Port of Lairge’ the new pilot boat, which was commissioned in 2019, was received recently by the Port of Waterford crew at the Dunmore East pontoon. The state-of-the-art vessel is a 15-metre interceptor and was christened ‘Port Lairge’ after a much-loved steam-powered dredger, which served on the Suir for over 70 years until the 1980s. Port of Waterford currently operates two pilot boats — one based in Dunmore East at the primary boarding position and one in Passage East. The new vessel replaces the ‘Dun Mor’, a purpose-built pilot boat, designed and built in 1996. The new all-weather boat will provide safer working conditions for pilotage personnel. The vessel is self-righting and capable of recovering if capsized by a large breaking wave. Taking delivery of the new vessel, Captain Darren Doyle, Harbourmaster, Port of

that this work can be carried out year-round in all weather conditions.” Piloting the new vessel on her maiden voyage to the pontoon at Dunmore East following the completion of her sea trials was boatbuilder Frank Kowalski,

can carry five pilots and two crew in comfort. The vessel will be berthed at the Pontoon in Dunmore East. The new vessel also offers a reduction in fuel emissions and is a more sustainable boat for the Port of Waterford.

THE impact of Covid-19 could last a decade for many young people, a startling fact that is explored in a new documentary. To highlight the issue, the Irish Youth Foundation (IYF) teamed up with presenter and musician May Kay to launch A Stitch in Time – a new on-line documentary series that hears directly from young Waterford people and their youth workers – about the impact of Covid-19 on their lives and their potential futures. The Waterford episode is one of three, powerful 10-minute documentaries in the IYF’s Stitch in Time series, which sees May Kay visit young people in their communities, including Declan O’Driscoll, a Waterford youth worker, and Ellen, a young woman who opens up about the effects of the pandemic. The docu-series was prompted by a major IYF report called Generation Pandemic, which highlighted concerns about young people’s mental health. To view the Waterford episode, go to: www.iyf.ie

The ‘most sensational woman ever’ takes her rightful place
T
HE Panthéon, the national mausoleum in Paris, is dedicated to the great men of France. ‘Aux Grands Hommes, La Patrie Reconnaise’ (to the great men, the grateful homeland), says the inscription. It houses the remains of Voltaire, Rousseau, Victor Hugo, Emile Zola and some 70 others the nation has chosen to honour over the course of the last 220 years. The remains of a few great women also rest in the Panthéon. Precious few: Simone Veil, radical politician and Holocaust survivor, the scientist Marie Curie, and two Resistance fighters from the second world war, Germaine Tillion and Genevieve Anthonioz . Another woman is about to join this legion of the distinguished dead. Josephine Baker is the first black woman to be
Michael Wolsey
interred in Panthéon’s crypt, the first woman so honoured who was not born in France and the first from the world of show business. . The role of honour describes her as an entertainer, Resistance fighter and civil rights activist. But that only outlines the life of a woman who saved the lives of many, many others
- a singer and dancer who was painted by Picasso and hailed by Hemingway as “the most sensational woman anybody ever saw, or ever will”. Josephine Baker was always a fighter. She had to be, for she was born into poverty, extreme even by the standards facing black families in her native Missouri in 1906. She was married twice by the age of 15, never had money and sometimes lived on the streets. She danced in a chorus-line but, as a black woman, had no prospect of going further. Her break came when the company performed in Paris and Josephine was recruited for La Revue Nègre, a show featuring black singers and dancers. Her erotic dancing made Josephine the star of the show in which she appeared on stage naked, except for some beads and a skirt made of rubber bananas. On both sexual and racial terms, the act might fail a mod-
ern test of what is correct, but it made Baker into a superstar, touring Europe, playing at the Folies Bergère and in a number of silent movies that were successful in France but ignored in America. She was grateful to France for recognising her talents. She became a French citizen and recorded her feelings in her most successful song, J’ai Deux Amours: “I have two loves, my country and Paris.” By her country she meant France and when it was occupied by the Nazis in 1939 she risked her life in its service. She worked as a spy for French counter-intelligence, socialising with Germans and charming them while gathering information, “France made me what I am,” she told spy chief Jacques Abbey. “The people of Paris have given me everything. I am ready to give them my life”. As an entertainer, Baker had
an excuse for moving around Europe. She carried information for transmission to England, about airfields, harbours and German troop concentrations Notes were written in invisible ink on Baker’s sheet music or sometimes on scraps of paper which she hid inside her knickers. “Who would dare stripsearch Josphine Baker?” she later asked. Well, the Gestapo would have dared, but Josephine managed to keep one step ahead of them, moving to different locations and fooling German border guards who seemed as star-struck by her as everyone else. “When they asked me for papers, they generally meant autographs,” she recalled. In 1951 Baker was invited back to the United States where she led a parade in front of 100,000 people in Harlem. But her refusal to perform for segregated audiences, and a sub-
sequent appearance in Cuba, ensured that she never got the acclaim there she deserved. Her strong, active support for the Civil Rights Movement prolonged her rejection by white American society. “I have walked into the palaces of kings and queens and into the houses of presidents,” she said, explaining her motivation. “But I could not walk into a hotel in America and get a cup of coffee.” America has never properly honoured Josephine Baker, but France has never forgotten her. And now this very great woman is joining the nation’s “great men””. If you have never seen Josephine Baker perform, I recommend that you search for her on YouTube. Some of the videos have been remastered, others are old and shaky and the sound quality is poor. But Miss Baker’s star quality cannot be dimmed.

Irish Garden Bird Survey
TV of the week
with Justin Ivory
Robin tops the list in the annual Irish Garden Bird Survey (Photo Justin Ivory) With the weather starting to get colder the number of birds visiting our gardens will start to rise again after the usual autumn lull. And of course this heralds the annual BirdWatch Ireland Irish Garden Bird Survey, their most popular citizen science survey with over 1,000 gardens taking part! Anybody, can take part, whether you have a big garden or small, or whether you feed the birds or not! Taking part couldn’t be simpler and is a great fun family activity. All you have to do is record the highest number of each species you see at any one time using your garden each week. It doesn’t matter if they are feeding or not, if they are in your garden whether it be on the ground, in the trees or bushes etc. you can count them. Count all species including birds of prey that you come into your garden, not just the cute and cheeky Robins and Blue Tits! So what exactly does it mean when we say record the highest count of each species? For example, if on the Monday of a week you see 3 Chaffinches at the one time in the garden in the morning and then in the afternoon you see 5 Chaffinches at the same time, your count for Chaffinches for that day is 5. If later in the week you see 7 Chaffinches at one time, then your count for Chaffinches for that week is 7. So head over to the BirdWatch Ireland websitewhere you can register and get full details, and even better have a warm glow inside as you know are contributing to important data about how are birds are faring.

FOR some this will be a nostalgic trip back to the 1980s; for the younger moviegoers, it might be the first outing to a Ghostbusters film. But in this rehash, everything that appeared in the original reappears here, as if in an effort to appease both camps. It might have been better not to resurrect this ghost at all, but now it is among us, you could do a lot worse for a family film over the festive period. Here, following the passing of her estranged father, Dr Egon Spengler, Callie (Carrie Coon) and her two children (Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard) set off to his remote farmhouse to try and start over. The legacy of Dr Spengler’s work changes that.

With love we remember Eileen Kennedy (née Butler), Skeard, Kilmacow, Co. Kilkenny, who departed this world on 27th November 2016. Mass offered on Thursday 27th November at 7pm Edmund Rice Chapel We gathered near your bed, So very close to you, For we knew the pain and suffering, That you were going through, I thought about so many things, As I held tightly to your hand, And heard your last words said to me, Before you left this land. So I gave to you life’s greatest gift, The gift of letting go. Now my heart will carry memories, Of the love you gave to me, Until we meet again in Heaven, Where the best is yet to be. Death changes everything, Time changes nothing, I miss you as much today, As I did the day you died - Martin. I was thinking today of what a wonderful world it would be, If everyone had the mother God gave me, I remembeer being with you on cold, rainy days, And you would be my friend, Because I couldn’t go out and play, You took the time with me and taught me, Things that only a mother can, Things that ony now I completely understand, A mothers love is the sweetest love on earth, And sometimes mother never knew, Just how much they’re worth, But you were a priceless gift to me, And I want you to know this day, That I had been given a treasure, I know God sent the best my way, You’ve been my dream friend, I’ll never forget the things you gave me, I love and thank God for you always. - Your loving son Alan You can only have one mother, Patient, kind and true, No other friend in all the world, Will be the same as you, When other friends forsake you, To mother you will return, For all her loving kindness, She asks nothing in return, As we look upon your picture, Sweet memories we recall, Of a face so full of sunshine, And a smile for one and all, Sweet Jesus take this message, To our dear mother up above, Tell her how we miss her, And give her all our love. - From son Brian & Sam, grandchildren Leanne and Calum. Although we smile and make no fuss, No one misses you more than us, And when old times we do recall, That’s when we miss you most of all. - Sadly missed, your brothers and sisters.
Birthday remembrance of Theresa (Tessie) Healy (nee O’Sullivan), late of Marian Terrace, Tramore and formerly of Sion View Terrace, Waterford whose birthday occurs on 27 November. You did your best It’s all we could ask Each child so different No easy task You gave us music You gave us word You gave us lau’ghter Yours the loudest and always heard Your pearls of wisdom You often shared A friend and mother To each you cared Although you’re gone I still hear your song And feel your presence felt I love you more Than words can say With you, we were truly blessed A mother and friend - Always in our hearts and thoughts and forever missed John & Rosie ------------------As the days pass into season And your absence spins the time Only now can my heart see That I was blessed to call you mine Those times I didn’t tell you Because I always thought you knew How much we all adored you And all the little things that you would do Deep in our hearts Your memory is kept To love and to cherish always And never to forget - Forever loved and missed Eamonn & Nan ------------------So many happy memories mam, come flooding back today. Of birthday celebrations before you went away. This wonderful occasions never changed throughout the years, but now your smile is missing, replaced with birthday tears. You may not be here with us, but the day means just as much. And we can feel your presence and the comfort of your touch. We’ll celebrate your birthday mam, the way we always do. Treasured memories of my loving mother Catherine Halligan, 84 Upper Yellow Road, whose birthday My mother kept a garden, A garden of the heart, She planted all the good things, That gave my life a start, She turned me to the sunshine, And encouraged me to dream, Fostering and nurturing the seeds of self-esteem. And when the winds and rain came, She protected me enough, But not too much, She knew I’d need to stand up strong and tough. Her constant good example, Always taught me right from wrong, Markers for my pathway, To last my whole life long. I am my mother’s garden, I am her legacy, And I hope today she feels the love reflected back from me - Loved and missed by your daughter Mary and family and son Thomas and family. o holy st anthony Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore of you to obtain for me my request. The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so you are the saint of miracles. O gentle and loving St Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, intercede for me and whisper my prayer into the ear of the sweet Infant Jesus who loved to linger in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will be yours. DP. Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Seamus produced another excellent performance at the weekend in the RSM Classic at Sea Island in Georgia. Three rounds in the 60’s saw the West Waterford man in serious contention for his second PGA Tour victory in the final round on Sunday. So we can talk about the (what ifs), but the fact is that Seamus is playing and performing at the highest level in his golfing career. The US golf networks have come to realise his talent as evidenced by the extra exposure he is now receiving. Seamus was playing to win at the weekend and came very close to doing so.
He finished on 15 under par for a share of fourth place and a cheque for $288,000. Seamus was the first to congratulate Taylor Gooch on his maiden victory on 22 under par. The weekend result sees Seamus move up to 44th place in the FedEx cup rankings and 70th place in the World rankings. As the wraparound season draws to a close, Seamus Power can be duly proud of his performance in 2021, the highlight being his first PGA Tour victory. Thank you Seamus for the hours of enjoyment you have given us throughout the year. We look forward to congratulating you personally in the near future. Continued success in 2022.
