€12m boost for ‘best little city’ THE ambitious North Quays development project has moved nearer with the allocation of €12.6m towards necessary infrastructure. The money will be mainly spent on a new bridge to connect the South Quays and the North Quays development zone, with a transport hub replacing Plunkett rail station. The boost came as Waterford was named one of Europe’s best small cities for investment. The influential Financial Times newspaper put Waterford in the top 10 list in three categories: European Micro Cities of the Future (8th), European Micro Cities with the greatest Economic Potential (5th) and European Micro Cities with a defined Foreign Direct Invertment strategy (7th). The newspaper also said the South East was one of the top 10 regions in Europe for economic potential. Its Foreign Direct Investment

Report said: “Ireland South East is crowned the winner among small regions, with the Ireland South East Development Office (Isedo) established in 2018 to promote investment into the region’s five counties ... Carlow, Kilkenny, Tipperary, Waterford and Wexford. “Isedo is well positioned for open channels of engagement and communication around investment opportunities “ The €12.6m North Quays funding is part of a €15,175,000 allocation from the National Transport Authority towards the city’s transport infrastructure. The rest will be spent on an extension of the greenway, from Bilberry to the city centre, and other transport schemes. The city asnd county council hopes to clear final planning hurdles in the coming weeks. The funding is part of a €100m Government commitment and further alloctions are expected over a three to five-year period.

Supreme Court makes legal history
LEGAL history was made in Waterford on Monday when the Supreme Court, in a session, partly televised, decided to refer a number of issues to the European Court of Justice. They relate to phone data retention and are crucial to Graham Dwyer’s appeal against his conviction in 2015 for the murder of Elaine O’Hara. It was the first sitting of the court in Waterford. Before the start of business Chief Justice Frank Clarke praised the “magnificent remodelled and extended courthouse”. In conjunction with the visit, the Chief Justice laid a wreath at the bust of John J. Hearne on Monday afternoon. In the evening, Mr Justice O’Donnell presented a talk on ‘The Irish Constitutional Tradition: today’s memory, tomorrow’s dream’ in the Garden Room of the Medieval Museum. Yesterday (Tues) Chief Justice Clarke, visited St. Brigid’s Family and Community Centre in Ballybricken.
TWO of the front runners for Taoiseach got a vote from Waterford TDs. David Cullinane (SF) and Mary Butler (FF) voted for their party leaders. The new Green Party deputy Marc Ó Cathasaigh voted for his party leader, Eamon Ryan. The other new Waterford deputy, Matt Shanahan, didn’t vote for any of the nominated candidates but said he hoped to give his support “in the future to a progressive programme for government.” The hospital campaigner used his maiden speech in the Dáil to highlight the lack of 24/7 cardiac services in the South East. He said that, as a mark of protest, he would not be voting for any of the four candidates nominated for Taoiseach. “I was elected to represent the constituency of Waterford. I also represent the people of the Sout East region,” he said. “I will not be supporting the nomination of a Taoiseach tonight as a protest against the fact that the South East and Waterford suffer significant discrimination in the provision of cardiac services at University Hospital Waterford.” He said: “I will not vote in favour of a Taoiseach this evening but I hope to give support in the future to a progressive programme for Government. However, it must have equity and fairness at its heart. When people look at that programme
I want them to see themselves reflected in it in terms of the challenges we face in education, housing, healthcare and homelessness. I will do all I can to work with every member of the House to achieve that.” Ms Butler used her first speech of the 33rd Dáil to highlight housing and healthcare issues. She told TDs their task was to put in place a secure, responsible Government that can deal with all the issues. “Today I stand proudly reelected to the thirty-third Dáil with a mandate I received in Waterford,” she said. “My mandate is as important as anyone else’s and must be respected the same as everybody else’s. Some 160 people were elected to this Dáil a few weeks ago, and we all deserve the same respect. “The main job at hand is to put in place a secure, responsible Government that can deal with all the issues, but which can also deliver on those issues within the fiscal space available to us. “ She explained her support for the Fianna Fáil leader: “I support the nomination of Deputy Micheál Martin for Taoiseach. He is a man of integrity, commitment, experience, grit and determination, with a proven track record who can and will deliver if given the opportunity.” Mr Ó Cathasaigh has still to make his maiden speech.

Blues’ skipper tells of addiction to betting
MICHAEL O’Connor has spoken out about his gambling addiction The Waterford FC striker says he doesn’t gamble any more and attends one-onone support sessions. But he added: “I’m not saying
I’m an angel, or that I’m cured. I won’t be for the rest of my life. I’ll always be a gambler. That will always be inside me.” O’Connor, who captained in the Blues in their opening legue match against St Patrick’s
Athletic, told the Irish Mirror: “People’s first impressions would have been ‘Jesus, what are they doing making him captain?’ But I’m working hard to be a better person.” He attributed his recovery to the support of girlfriend Aisling, his parents and siblings, Waterford boss Alan Reynolds and his staff, and team-mates. In a frank interview, the former Dundalk, Shamrock Rovers and Linfield player told Mirror Sport: “For me, it started when I was getting paid at Dundalk. I was 16, living at home without rent or bills. “In football, you’re in an environment where people are talking about this horse and that horse. After training, I was straight down the bookies throwing my wages at them.” O’Connor says last season he played with a smile on his face but admits it was all an act. “I was in bits mentally. Playing on a Friday, I’d worry about who I’d bump into afterwards or who I owed money to. Now the smile is real. The support from my girlfriend, my family, Rennie, Fran Rocket and the lads is incredible.”
Badge of honour at the RSC WATERFORD FC have revealed their new jersies with a logo supporting the campaign for round-the-clock cardiac care services in the city They wore them for the first time on Friday when they played Bohemians at the RSC. General Manager Jack Power told RTÉ News that the Blues didn’t want to sell their jersey space short. “We said, look, we’re going to
take a different direction this year and we’re going to do a bit of goodwill and the cardiac campaign took our eye,” he said. The reaction has been “very positive” from the footballing public across the South East, he said. “I think it’s great now for people to see that we’re looking after the town as well as the soccer club.”
The move has been given the all-clear by the FAI. It bans political slogans but the cardiac care campaign is not considered political. What is Adviser’s Alpha?
V
anguard Asset Managers conducted a UK study in 2014 and published the results in a white paper entitled “Putting a value on your value: Quantifying Vanguard Adviser’s Alpha in the UK”. Following that, Vanguard set up a programme for financial advisers that had been running very successfully in the US for many years. The programme starts by defining Adviser’s Alpha as the difference between the return that investors might achieve with an adviser and the return that they might have achieved on their own. It then sets out seven key areas where advisers add value before estimating values for each area, arriving at a total Adviser’s Alpha figure of around 3% per annum. It is important to say that the
The programme provides tools and training to help advisers maximise their own alpha, so they can be confident in describing and demonstrating the value each adviser adds to their clients. These tools represent best practices that can influence the success of the adviser’s clients’ in achieving their goals. The programme underlines the importance of trust and regular communication between advisers and their clients; these are the two vital ingredients that will ensure clients will listen to their adviser when they need them most. Below is the table of the areas where Vanguard calculated advisers add value.

Top firms go for gold on the big biz night THIRTY-NINE of Waterford’s top businesses will be honoured on Friday evening (February 28) in the Tower Hotel at the sixth annual Waterford Business Awards. There will be 13 category winners, who will then go head to head in the hope of claiming the Overall Waterford Business of the Year award. This year there will also be an Ambassador of the Year award, which will be presented by EirGen Pharma, for the person’s contribution to the cultural and economic climate of Waterford and for inspiring others through their commitment, motivation, and vision. The awards are sponsored by Waterford City and County Council and will be presented by Mayor John Pratt “The Waterford Business Awards is one of the most important events on our calendar as it is a showcase for the outstanding achievements by our business community,” said Waterford Chamber President Jonathan Earl.
EASTENDERS Soaps might be derided by many for, at times, being too far-fetched and convoluted in the story lines but in one very intrinsic way they are about the only form of mass entertainment that reflects society today. They cover everyone. Old, young and inbetween, straight, gay, trans, all ethnicities, soaps are about the only shows that have got it all. They may not be perfect but when it comes to the socio-economic issues of the day they try to be relevant. That is why the current story of Ben and Callum is an interesting one. Putting the implausibilities of the story to one side the core of the story is one man’s love for another and what he is willing to do to keep that man from harm. Who would ever have thought that such a storyline, devoid of subtext would be possible just 10 or 15 years ago. Soaps may be many things but they do seem to have their finger on the pulse of what is going on today and it is no wonder that they continue to draw in audiences of all ages, genders and ethnicities in their millions. BLOODLINE When it comes to thriller movies today it takes more than just the usual fare to get an audience interested and make your film a success. Audiences are cinema literate to an extent that they have never been before. On demand and streaming services mean that watching a movie isn’t an appointment event and audiences can watch them whenever they want. To stand out you have to have a great story. This movie attempts that but doesn’t really pull it off. It is about a counsellor in a high school who, when he and his wife have a newborn that keeps them up with it’s constant screaming, turns to killing those who have hurt the teenagers in his care. This is something he has learned from his mother who has already in the past murdered her way out of some bad situations. It’s a bit like ‘Dexter’, a natural killer who has his deep seated desires focused on only killing bad people. Naturally enough things don’t go to plan and soon the police are on his tail. It comes as no surprise that he gets away with it all. After all he and his mother have been getting away with it for decades. The style of acting and direction in this movie, as well as the way it is shot, might lead you to think that those behind the film wanted to make something very distinctive and different. It isn’t, it ends up being very generic and by the numbers, choosing the safe route at every turn. A hard pass.

Gailltír aim to take the cup ... and avoid snow Get together for a cuppa and help fight homelessness this March
southeastsimon.ie/ coffeemorning
FOR the second year running, Croke Park beckons for Waterford’s Gailltír who will face St. Rynagh’s of Offaly in the Intermediate Camogie Championshsip Final. The Waterford champions are hoping to make amends for last year’s defeat. They have enjoyed an impressive campaign so far and proved too strong for last year’s winners Clonduff of Down, winning out 2-13 to 0-11. St. Rynagh’s are making their first appearance in the Intermediate Final, having accounted for Carnmore in the semi-final. Gailltír star Áine Lyng (pictured) remembers last year’s encounter with Clonduff for the awful weather. “It was about halfway through the first half that the weather started to turn, “she ssid. “We went in at half-time,
and I’d say it was the same for Clonduff - everyone’s hands were frozen so we were sitting there holding cups of hot water. “Ciara Jackman was in the goal holding a hot water bottle there was that great picture. “I felt more for the Slaughtneil and St Martin’s girls after when the snow really came in (during the senior final). I
think the game is remembered more for the weather rather than the result but we got great memories out of last year.” Last year Gailltír beat St Rynagh’s in the semi-final and Áine has the greatest respect for their opponents. “We know they have a very strong team,” she said. “ You have Siobhan Flannery, Kate Kenny, Roisin Egan. A lot of them won an All-Ireland football final with Naomh Pól They know what it tastes like to win an All-Ireland final. “They have that bit of an edge on us. ” The AIB All-Ireland Senior and Intermediate Camogie Club Championships Finals return to Croke Park on Sunday 1 March. Gailltír’s game is at 1.30 and Sarsfields (Galway) play Slaughtneil (Derry) in the senior final at 3.30.

Helping hand for Solas youth project
Panic is not the answer
O
Our View
ne thing that is almost as bad as a disaster, is the prolonged, never-ending anticipation of a disaster. That is the situation that we find ourselves in currently with the news that the Coronavirus is steadily making it’s way across the globe. While there are, as always, numerous news stories that could be filling the pages and taking up the airwaves of our media, there seems to be only one story that people appear to be interested in and that is the Coronavirus. When news broke last week that two Irish people had contracted the virus, many thousands of miles away from these shores, the tabloids went into a feeding frenzy. It was no longer the ‘Coronavirus’ but the ‘Killer Virus’, as if by any other way there were other viruses out there that didn’t ‘kill’. But that doesn’t seem to matter because the Coronavirus has long since taken up the mantle of the bogeyman under the bed. In all of the information that people are being inundated with it is hard to separate the wheat from the chaff. Because the virus is so new and it seems from what we know of it so far that it is so easily spread, the main question is - just how deadly is it? Some suggest that so far, from the data that we have to hand, it has a mortality rate of around 3% while others think that it as much as 10 times more deadly than the Winter flu which claims many lives every year here in Ireland. What is worrying is that there seems to be little reliable information and when that happens it means that not only people but Governments have to act in the broadest way possible to protect themselves. China has to a large extent been put in quarantine and that has had profound effects on it’s economy and of course it’s people. Other countries, such as Russia, are severely limiting the numbers of people that it will allow into the country. Even here now in Ireland you are starting to see people walking around wearing face masks. It might be unusual to see this, but it is happening. This is given the fact that health professionals are saying that to stay healthy it would be far better to wash your hands thoroughly throughout the day than wear a face mask. But as the authorities scramble to find ways to fight the Coronavirus it seems that the panic has already set it and with cases popping up in Europe every day it certainly isn’t going away. However panic and a knee jerk response certainly won’t work. Clear and precise information is what people need.

The people have spoken translation will take time
T
D after TD stood up in the Dail last week and declared that the people had spoken. Many said the verdict of the electorate was clear. Absolutely clear, said Brendan Howlin. Totally clear, said Pearse Doherty. Really? I don’t think so. The people have spoken but, so far as clarity goes, they might have been talking in the language of the ancient Aztecs or Incas. They could be heard but nobody knows what they said. For the second election in a row, the voters of Ireland have returned a Dáil divided between disparate parties with almost equal voting strengths. In 2016 we returned two front-running parties. This time we have complicated matters further by adding Sinn Féin to the mix and handing the balance of power to the Greens, a small and divided group of left-wingers, and a bunch of Independents with little in common. We have elected a Dáil from which it is, to put it mildly, extremely difficult to form a
Michael Wolsey government, and now we are complaining because the rival politicians we elected can’t strike a deal in three weeks. We, the voters, created the problem. We should have a bit of patience and give our chosen representatives a chance to solve it. Either that, or prepare for another general election. This belief that the people have spoken clearly is just one of the myths that have grown up since February 8. Another is that Sinn Féin won the election. I have heard Mary Lou McDonald say just that on several occasions. Well, she would, wouldn’t she? If I were in her position I would say that too. But it’s not true.
Sinn Féin had a very good election but Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael - parties with a lot in common - got a combined vote which was almost twice that of SF, with whom they differ considerably. I don’t think the country will welcome a grand coalition of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael but neither do I think there is anything unreasonable or undemocratic about the idea that two quite similar parties with a combined first preference vote of just over 43%, and a combined seat total of 73, should seek to form a government together, rather than reach out to a very different party that won just over 24% of the vote and 37 seats. The people have spoken and a grand coalition seems as reasonable an interpretation of what they asked for as any other. Another myth is that the country has swung Left. I’m not sure if Sinn Féin, a party that opposes increased carbon tax and wants to abolish property tax, can really be classed as socialist: anti-establishment,
certainly, and populist sometimes, but you can’t really wrap the Red Flag round them. The increased Green vote is also being seen as a swing to the Left but I don’t see why the environmental issues which drive Eamon Ryan and his party should be the exclusive preserve of socialists. And that leaves those who have always claimed to be socialists: the Labour Party which lost one of its seven seats and got just over 4% of the vote; the Social Democrats who, thanks to Sinn Féin surpluses, went up from two to six seats on less than 3% of the vote and the uneasy coalition of Solidarity and People Before Profit who got 2.6% of the vote and came back with the same meagre total of five seats. The people have spoken but I don’t think they called for a sharp Left turn. Interpreting what they did say will be a slow business. Giving them what they want may prove impossible. As Fianna Fáil’s Michael McGrath astutely observed: “It is a lot easier to organise a protest than to organise a government.”

Hospital orders six-month halt to urology treament WATERFORD’S hospital is not accepting new referrals from GPs for urology out-patient services. The six-month freeze has been blamed on lack of capacity. “I contacted hospital management and they confirmed this decision is down to a lack of capacity,” said Sinn Féin TD David Cullinane. University Hospital Waterford (UHW) announced the move in a letter to GPs in counties Waterford, Wexford, Carlow, Tipperary and Kilkenny . It said that the move was to allow it to deal with the number of patients already on the waiting list to see a urologist. Urology, also known as genitourinary surgery, deals with surgical and medical diseases of the male and female urinary-tracts and the male reproductive organs The letter sent to GPs said: “Given the increasing demand for urology services in University Hospital Waterford, the current capacity constraints
| 19
and the risks associated with delays in access to care and treatment, University Hospital Waterford will not accept any new out-patient referrals for a six-month period effective 1st March 2020.” The hospital said rapid access prostate referrals would continue to be accepted as normal. Mr Cullinane said the problem of capacity at UHW had arisen “time and again”. He said: “I contacted hospital management and they confirmed this decision is down to a lack of capacity. “UHW currently has two full time consultant urologists and one agency post. However this is insufficient to meet demand and wait times to see a consultant can be as long as three years.” He called for additional consultant posts to be filled. “ The solution to long wait times is not to stop taking referrals but to build up capacity at UHW,” said Mr Cullinane.
Deadline looming for WIT scholarship
CAO applicants applying for the Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) President’s Scholarship Programme are reminded they must have an eligible WIT course on their CAO list by 1 March. Each year up to five exceptional undergraduate students are awarded scholarships with a total value of up to €12,000 each. The scholarship application process has four stages. People cannot apply for the scholarship unless they have applied to the CAO and have chosen a WIT course. A lot of applicants apply to the CAO by 1 February deadline and leave the list incomplete or blank until the free change of mind facility opens in May. However, if they wanted to apply for the scholarship they have to make sure an eligible CAO course is on their list before 1 March. Apply for the WIT President’s Scholarship before Sunday, 1 March using the online form on www.wit. ie/caoscholarship.

The world’s greatest hurler is back!
The world’s greatest hurler was last seen in the multi-award winning web series “The Hurler”, which was filmed around Waterford back in 2013. The first Hurler in history to fail a drugs test for PEDs, Gar was ostracised from the sport a few years ago and was forced to move to New York City to train a team of misfits to qualify for the prestigious World Games (think Mighty Ducks meets Erin’s Own). This is where we return to The Hurler, for three nights, from March 5-7 in Garter Lane Theatre. The brainchild of Tony Kelly, The Hurler is an absolute laugh a minute riot. Along with wellknown theatre stalwart Pat Daly, the play was adapted by Tony from a screenplay that he wrote in 2017. It’s a sort of “Audience with Gar Campion” so from the minute you walk into the theatre, you are in the world of the greatest hurler to ever pick up a stick. There’s no 4th wall, it’s just Gar Campion – the man who Ken McGrath and John Mullane dream of being – and an unsuspecting audience. “Gar is a national icon so we’d like to bring him further afield if everything goes well in Waterford Tony Kelly told Waterford Today. The Hurler – The Play, is directed by none other than local Theatre legend Jim Nolan, fresh from his sweeping of boards at the recent Green Room Awards at the Theatre Royal. All the ingredients are there for a brilliant night of local comedy.
Bellefords to play Tramore Saltarrello Trio set to appear at City Hall on March 6 The Bellefords are a local Rockabilly Band who have a rare local gig this weekend. The Band are made up of three female lead singers - Ann Cullen, Paula Marks and Jenny Cullen with their band made up of lead guitarist, Jimmy Shields; bass guitarist, Mark White and Darryl Brazil on drums. Their style is 1940’s/1950’s RocknRoll Rockabilly and RnB and there really is something for everyone. As well as harmonies there are strong solos covering songs from Etta James, Julie London, Ruth Brown, Wanda Jackson, Janis Martin, Connie Francis and Patsy Cline to name a few and not all female artists songs from Big Joe Turner, Elvis, Bill Haley and Jack Earls are among the set list. On Saturday 29th February the Band are featured in a Rockabilly night at O’Shea’s
Hotel in Tramore along with new upcoming Rockin Band The Memphis Misfits who are being introduced to the Rockin Scene, also Dublin DJ Dominic Mallon will be keeping the dance floor full with some great Jives Strolls and Bops. Bopflix Films from the UK have several videos of the Bellefords on their YouTube site and you can also see performances of the band on their Facebook page. The Bellefords are together three years and have performed in festivals in the UK, more recently in Spain, the Derry Jazz Festival. Saturday is an important gig for the Band. ‘We hope this will change as we love performing at home’ Tickets for the night are €10 entry on the door, we hope to see you there!!!
The Saltarrello Trio will take to the stage in The Large Room, City Hall, Waterford on Friday 6th March, 7:30 pm. This exciting group comprises Garth Knox (medieval fiddle, viola d’amore, viola), Sylvain Lemêtre (percussion), and Agnès Vesterman (cello). The programme will include works by Hildegard von Bingen, Dowland, Purcell, Vivaldi and much more, as well as a specially commissioned Music Network composition by violist and composer Garth Knox. Combining their collective and vast experience of classical and contemporary music with the textures and colours of folk music, the Saltarello Trio fuses all three styles to inform the tour’s witty arrangements. This programme will highlight the many connections that exist between the music of today and that of hundreds of years ago. Tickets €17, Concession €15, Students €5. Hunger Games
book of the week
with Justin Ivory
The Sleeper Lies €9.99
Early emerging Bombus terrestris (Photo Justin Ivory)
by Andrea Mara
Bumblebees are probably the most important of our pollinators and their numbers in Ireland have plummeted by 14% in just 7 years. One third of our 21 species are in serious trouble. In general bumblebee queens come out of hibernation in February and March and need nectar from flowering plants for food to energise themselves enough to start new colonies. The problem is there just aren’t enough flowers early in the season. Hunger is killing our bumblebees. They are literally starving to death. Our obsession with tidying up nature means that our grass and parkland areas are devoid of dandelions and other early essential wildflowers. Climate change is adding additional challenges. Bees react to temperature, and as winters get milder they are coming out of hibernation earlier. On the other hand, plants flower when light levels increase i.e. when the days get longer. So, early emerging bees are finding little or no flowers to feed on.
The Sleeper Lies is a mystery thriller by Andrea Mara, author of the Irish Book Award shortlisted One Click. Set in Wicklow, the story is about Marianne, who wakes one morning to find footprints trailing across her snow-covered garden. Marianne’s nearest neighbour lives a mile away, and she has no idea who has been creeping around outside her house at night. Is it somehow linked to her interest in true crime? Or perhaps to her mother’s unexplained death, twenty years earlier? Or maybe the answer lies closer to home. In the end, 24 days is all it takes for everything to come crashing down.
Blackthorn coming into flower now. Important food source for bumblebees. (Photo Justin Ivory)
Queens of one bumblebee species in particular, Bombus terrestris (Bufftailed bumblebee) are now establishing nests in late autumn and maintaining them through the winter and not hibernating at all. Studies in the UK have found that these non-hibernating bumblebees are relying on mass flowering exotic garden species such as Mahonia, Lonicera fragrantissima (Winter Honeysuckle), Hebe spp., winter-flowering Erica, Jasminum nudiflorum (Winter Jasmine) and Helleborus spp. These plants flower at their peak during winter, providing bumblebees with an abundance of nectar to develop their colonies. As we reach the end of winter and enter early spring, early-flowering species such as Lesser Celandines, Blackthorn and Dandelions are beginning to appear. It is vital that we not only increase the numbers of early-flowering species but that we leave them be as they appear.

In March 2010, two American women, including one who named herself ‘Jihad Jane’, were arrested in a number of high-profile arrests in Waterford, Ireland, which were trumpeted by the US attorney’s office as ‘the new face of terrorism’. Facing huge jail sentences, the two women pleaded guilty but now for the first time ever, with unprecedented access, JIHAD JANE tells the story of the most absurd terror cell ever to come together. If I could write a story, It would be the greatest ever told, Of a kind and loving mother, who had a heart of Gold, I could write a million pages, but still be able to say, Just how much I love you and miss you every day. - Always in my thoughts and prayers, Ger and Marea. Have you ever lost a mother, That meant the world to you, One you loved so dearly, And miss her like I do, Have you ever had a heartache, Or ever felt the pain, Or shed a thousand tears, That drop like falling rain, If you’ve never had that feeling, Then I pray you never do, Because when Mam went to heaven, A part of me went too. - Loved and missed always, from your son Seamus and Noeleen.
Quietly today your memory is kept, No need for words, we will never forget, When thoughts go back, as they often do, We will treasure the memories we have of you. Of all the gifts in life, However great or small, To have you as my friend Julia, Was the greatest gift of all. - Always remembered, from your friend Peggy and Richie. A tribute of love to a nan so dear, So close to our hearts each day of the year, We will always have memories to cherish and hold Of a wonderful nan More precious than gold. - Always in my heart, your grand daughter Eve Mam and Dad, Death leaves a heartache, No one can heal, Love leaves a memory no one can steal, Deep are the memories, Precious they stay, No passing of time, Can take them away. - Your loving son Paddy, Joan and family. Along the road of yesterday, That takes us back to you, And memories of us together And happy times we knew, We shared so much together Laughter joy and tears, For us who thought so much of you, They were our happiest years, Nothing can replace you, Nothing ever will, In life we loved you dearly In death we love you still The precious years won’t come again, When we were all together, But the love & joy you gave us, Will stay with us forever. - From your son Brendan and grandchildren Stephen, Anthony, David and Donna.

Hurlers maintain momentum Waterford retained their top of the Allianz League following a hard earned 0-17 to 0-16 win over Galway at Walsh Park on Sunday last. Following wins over both Cork and Westmeath there was quiet optimism among the followers going in this encounter with over 3600 patrons making their way to the Keane’s Road venue. Liam Cahill and his management team welcomed back Austin Gleeby the son and Villager J a m i e Barron and both were included in the starting fifteen. Patrick Curran and Stephen Bennett saw Waterford ahead in the opeing five minutes but points from Sean Loftus and Brian Concannon had Galway level almost immediately. There was little to seperate two hard working teams and neither could muster a comprehensive lead in the opening twenty minutes. Stephen Bennett created space in the 23rd minute but a brilliant save from Galway goalkeeper James Skehill kept the “clean sheet”. Galway edged in front (0-8/07) but Calum Lyons levelled following a Waterford move in-

John Pratt. volving Jamie Barron and Neil Montgomery. Two points from Pauric Mahony and one from Kevin Moran saw the Deise into the break, ahead (0-11/0-8) Two points from Tadhg Haran on the restart closed the lead to a single point. However four unanswered points, three from Pauric Mahony and one from Jamie Barron, opened a five point lead (0-15/0-10) for the hosts. As the game entered the final ten minutes Waterford led
(0-16/0-12) but three Cathal Mannion points and one from substitute Evan Niland seemed to have booked a draw for the Tribesmen. However as the clock moved into additional time a superb point from Peter Hogan edged the Deise back in front although a final Galway effort from Sean Loftus went narrowly wide of the posts. Two points and a quarter final place for Waterfod left the home crowd happy and certain-

Last chance for Wildcats
Waterford Wildcats were at the wrong end of the score line when the lost 64-72 to Cork side Glanmire BC at home last Saturday night at the Mercy Sports Hall . In the early stages there was good reason for the home supporters to be up beat as their favourites matched the visitors score for score with co-captains Jasmine Walker and Steph O’ Shea doing the business for Wildcats. One major concern was the display of American Shrita Parker who had totalled 13 points by the end of the first quarter to leave Glanmire ahead by the minimum 18-19 at the end of the first quarter. The focus was now on closing down Parker and it worked to some effect as she was contained to a single 3 pointer in the second quarter. However her teammates stepped up and made the best of every opportunity to lead 32-43 at the half way stage. Wildcats did have their own opportunities but failed to take them as they passed the ball around time after time in the hope someone else would take the shot. But for late baskets from Sinead Deegan
Debbie Ogayemi at full stretch trying to prevent Glanmire’s Louise Scanell from gaining possession. and Debbie Ogayemi the deficit would have been much greater . At this stage things were not looking good for Wildcats in spite of the fact they were giving it their all. Scores were traded like for like as the game progressed with Walker plus Maria Palarino and Helena Rohan netting for Wildcats. But Parker who is possibly the best player in the league was on the rampage again totalling 12 points in the penultimate quarter leaving her side ahead 50-62 with the final 10 minutes to play.
Now down 12 points Wildcats had to make a final push to save the day. Abby Flynn blazed a 3 pointer and then Walker and O Shea added more fine scores and now just five points separated the sides with under five minutes remaining. But that was as good as it got as again Parker settled the Glanmire nerves with a 3 pointer her final score in a game high magnificent 31 points. The final score of 64-72 does not reflect the effort Wildcats put in as they gave it their all and were more than a match for Glan-
mire who had Parker who made the difference. Top scorers for Wildcats were; Jazz Walker 20 points with Steph o Shea on 11 and Helena Rohan on 9. Wildcats need to stay positive as all is not lost yet. Other results in the league went their way which means should Wildcats win their final two games of the regular season they will quality for the play offs. Those games are both away to Kilkenny’s Marble City Hawks and Brunell of Cork. The first of these games is in Kilkenny this Saturday at 5pm . The Hawks playing their last home game of the season would love nothing better than to quash their near neighborurs chances of a play off spot. ABBEY ABU All members and supporters of the Wildcats basketball club wish to congratulate Abby Flynn on winning the prestigious Park Hotel Award for January 2020 , Abby was the magnificent captain of Wildcats U/20 team who recently captured the National U/20 cup title .
travelled to Markievicz Park on Saturday last to face a Sligo team harbouring ambitions of winning the Division. However the hosts, beaten the previous weekend by Wicklow had their challenge severely dented as Waterford came away with a (2-12/0-16) win. Waterford playing against a swirling wind were behind 0-9 to 0-6 at the break with good scores for the Deise from Jason Gleeson, Conor Murray and Robbie Flynn. Indeed Waterford did carve out a goal chance just before the break but a well struck shot from Dylan Guiry was brilliantly saved by keeper Aidan Devaney. The second half saw the hosts maintain their narrow lead with Liam Gaughan and Cian Breheny keeping the scoreboard ticking. However that was all about to change as Waterford’s Dylan Guiry sent Sean O’Donovan through to goal on 50 minutes. The lead was back to a single point and the Sligo nerves were beginning to fray. A second goal from Guiry fifteen minutes later saw Waterford ahead (2-9/0-14). Gaughan landed a levelling point for Sligo but Darragh Corcoran hit two superb scores for Waterford in the closing minutes to see the Deise over the line for their opening win of the campaign.
Rovers beat the Blues at RSC
Luck seems to be against Waterford FC at the moment. An own goal followed by a second goal within a minute of having a man sent off was enough to do the Blues at the RSC on Monday. To Waterford’s credit, the ten men dug in and ensured Rovers did not score again, a full 70 minutes of football. The game had barely started and Waterford were already picking the ball out of the back of the net, an own goal by Akin Odimayo saw the Dublin giants take a fortunate lead. Seconds later Andre Burley picked up his first yellow card. Ten minutes later he picked up his second and was off to the line. A goal down and a man down, worse was to come for the Blues from the resultant free kick. The free saw a decent ball floated into the box from the right wing was cleared, but broke to Rover’s debutant Rhys Marshall curled a beaut in from outside the box. Waterford FC travel to Sligo Rovers this Saturday night in a match where the three points at this point of the season could already be vital.
Vikings lose out to Carlow in close game
Too many unforced errors and lapses in concentration cost WIT Vikings in a tight game with IT Carlow. A lighting start from WIT Vikings with baskets from Sheehan, Jay Kavanagh and O’Neill saw them 8 points up before IT Carlow registered their first score. Carlow hit back with three pointers from American Harper and Butler. WIT Vikings dried up offensively and let the visitors take control and take a six-point lead. A big three from Vikings under 18 player Colin O’Reilly cut it to three as the period ended, 19 to 16 in favour of the visitors. O’Reilly continued where he left off as the second period got going with a two and another three. Pepper added another and the Vikings offence was moving again. IT Carlow hit back with Whelan having not scored in the first quarter stepping up with a three and a pair of baskets to keep his side four in front. With the clock winding down to half time and IT Carlow in possession they went for the final shot and missed. They got
the offensive rebound and put it in. WIT Vikings were now 6 down starting the second half and needed to put in a big effort to get themselves back into the game and to their credit they did just that. They produced their best period of the game working hard on both ends of the floor. Little in it as the final period goth under way, baskets from O’Neill, Dale Kavanagh and Grassey keeping the pressure on IT Carlow but the visitors just made the baskets at the right times. At the other end Vikings were trying to force the issue and turned over the ball too many times. In all they had 18 turnovers in a game where the opposing team were not pressing. In the final minutes IT Carlow were 4 in front and WIT Vikings fouled to put them to the free throw line but instead of reducing the margin it increased to give the Visitors an 8-point win 76 to 68. On the plus side WIT Vikings have gotten closer to the teams well above them in the league since Christmas.
