Rescue 117 ‘life or death’ issue THE Waterford Council of Trade Unions (WCTU) has called for the retention of Rescue 117, saying the service has proved its necessity and worth over the years in rescuing people at sea, injured on mountains, in river searches, and especially, given the lack of 24/7 Cardiac Care area at UHW and throughout the South East, in medical emergencies. It comes as transport Minister Eamon Ryan has admitted in recent days that the potential loss of the Waterford search and rescue base is a “life or death” situation, as fears grow the base will be lost under a new contract worth hundreds of millions of euro for the renewal of aviation services for the Irish Coast Guard. The current bases from which these search and rescue helicopters launch are in Shannon, Sligo, Dublin, and Waterford. However, the tender for the €800m contract states that there should be a “minimum” of three

helicopters included in the new deal; this has prompted fears that Waterford could lose its helicopter base, which would have ramifications for the south and south-east region. The R117 helicopter operates out of Waterford, and its crews had a busy year in 2021; typically it responds to around 700 calls a year but that increased to over 900 last year. “Waterford has seen a huge loss of public services over the years”, the WCTU said in correspondence to Waterford Today, “without a whimper from official Waterford. Sadly, this service like many public services, has been outsourced to a private operator, which means it’s never fully guaranteed, due to the regular tendering for services, the drive for profits by the operators, and cost cutting by central government.” Along with the loss of what is an essential rescue service, the continued on next page

It’s back to business as top firms vie for awards

Enerpower jobs

Enerpower, the Waterford-based Renewable Energy Company, is to hire 100 new staff over the next three years in response to the growing demand for renewable energy solutions. . “As more and more organisations start taking climate change and energy security more seriously we are seeing both our market and our business grow,” said Owen Power, Enerpower MD. Enwerpower was founded in 2008 to provide sustainable energy solutions.

Waterford’s top businesses have been shortlisted for the eighth annual Waterford Business Awards. Organisers Waterford Chamber have joined forces again with partners WLR and Dungarvan and West Waterford Chamber for the gala awards ceremony, which will take place virtually via live stream on Friday,

March 4th. Waterford Chamber President John McSweeney said, “It has been an incredibly difficult year for our business community, so I think we all need some positivity and the Waterford Business Awards are sure to provide just that.” The shortlisted businesses were nominated by the public and also through a selfnomination process.

An independent judging panel decided upon the finalist shortlist after a rigorous judging analysis of each application (see above) WLR will broadcast features on all the shortlisted companies on ‘The Hot Desk’ in the lead-up to the awards on March 4th and you can listen back to the programmes on podcast on WLRfm.com.

Fears for Rescue 117 grow

Continued from front page loss of jobs and the service at Waterford would be another body blow regarding the future of the Airport, the WCTU continued. Speaking on RTÉ radio recently, Mr Ryan said that the next phase of the tendering process will provide more details on the requirements for the search and rescue service. This would include greater specification on the number of bases in the country, he added. He said the current phase of the tender process is about scoping the interest for providing the service. Mr Ryan said that it was a “critical” issue and the Government will ensure the tender is handled in a “proper, organised way. He called it a “life or death” issue and said “we have to get it right”. Council meetings in Waterford and Kilkenny discussed the service’s future recently, while Waterford City and County Council agreed as part of those discussions to write to the Transport Minister stressing the need to retain all four search and rescue bases in the State.

Greenway is country’s most-loved attraction for visitors

LOVED by locals and tourists alike, the Waterford Greenway has been named ‘Ireland’s Best Visitor Attraction’ in the Irish Independent Reader Travel Awards 2022. What was once the railway line from Waterford City to Dungarvan is now a spectacular 46km off-road cycling and walking trail, crossing eleven bridges, three impressive viaducts and winding through an atmospheric tunnel. The popular route in Ireland’s Ancient East is peppered with heritage, history and natural beauty as it runs alongside the world renowned ornamental gardens at Mount Congreve, Waterford Suir Valley Railway, former woollen mills and railway stations. It also offers views of the River Suir, the Comeragh Mountains, The Copper Coast UNESCO Global Geopark, and Dungarvan Bay. Mayor of Waterford City and County, Councillor Joe Kelly was delighted with the win, which is a great boon for tourism in the region. “It’s a much loved amenity here in Waterford and the South East, but it is wonderful to see how much an impression Waterford Greenway has made throughout the country,” he said. And Irish Independent readers

were also full of praise for the amenity. “The surface is perfect,” one user wrote. “It is always alive with people. It promotes exercise, social get-togethers of families and mental well-being through its safe routes,” they said, adding: “It soothes the soul.” Johnny Brunnock, trails officer at Waterford City and County Council, said the combined efforts of locals and the business community had helped to create a fantastic amenity that the county can be very proud of. “It’s been a tough two years for everybody, but amenities like Waterford Greenway give people the opportunity to get out and about, and stay connected, and all the while taking in some of the most breathtaking scenery that the county has to offer,” he said. This is not the first time that Waterford Greenway made an impact with Irish Independent readers. In 2019 it was named ‘Ireland’s Favourite Adventure’ in the Irish Independent Reader Travel Awards, while in 2021 it was awarded silver in the Excellence Category at the 10th European Greenways Award Ceremony. In 2020 it was the first Irish Greenway to attain Green Flag status, which it retained in 2021.

Since March 2021, UNICEF has delivered more than one billion vaccine doses to over 140 countries. Praising the support of people in Waterford, UNICEF Ireland Executive Director Peter Power said the issue of fair global access to vaccines had connected: “It has been a privilege to witness the generosity from people across Ireland,” he said. “This Christmas we saw donations from every single county, including Waterford, and they keep coming. It started out with a simple idea. When you get a vaccine, you can give one to people in some of the world’s poorest countries. The response has been incredible,” he said. Just like riding a bike as kids’ cycle track opens IF you are one of those parents who bought your child a bicycle for the new year but are struggling to find somewhere to teach them the basics, then you are in luck. first — and Ireland’s Dungarvan’s newest — amenity has just opened an outdoor Learn to Cycle’ track at Fairlane Park. The facility will help children learn to cycle on a ‘real life’ road structure with lines, signs and pedestrian crossing — but without the traffic. This latest amenity adds to existing play facilities at the park, which include slides, swings and climbing frames, along with water fountains and bird-feeding points — a firm favourite with young and old. With Waterford Greenway close by, the new Learn to Cycle track will also allow new cyclists to get some practice in before taking to the Greenway proper. Chair of Dungarvan/ Lismore District, Councillor Tom Cronin, highlighted how important such civic amenities are to communities.

“People have a new appreciation of the outdoors, and the numbers using such amenities are continuously growing,” he said. “This new cycle track will give those who are new to

cycling a chance to test out their wheels on a purpose-built track. It will be great to see people using this new amenity here at Fairlane Park in a safe and family-friendly environment.” The overall cost of the cycle

track came in at €50,000, with Waterford City and County Council receiving funding from the Local Government Fund and the Capital Grant Scheme. A skatepark and BMX pump track are soon to be developed.

Judges go wild for wolf project at BT Awards A First Year student at Ard Scoil na Mara, in Tramore, has won an award at the 58th BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition. Cian Ó Cadhla took 2nd place pin the ‘Biological and Ecological Junior Individual’ sector, with the project ‘Rewilding Ireland — Could Glenveagh National Park sustain a Grey Wolf population?’ Cian’s fascinating project asked whether introducing wolves to counter overgrazing at the national park could manage the deer population and allow woodland to regenerate. With no natural predators, Red Deer can lead to significant pressures on the woodland and peatland habitat. As part of his research, Cian visited Glenveagh and Wild Ireland in Donegal to study wolves first hand. Projects were also submitted from students at five other schools in Waterford: De La Salle College, Ardscoil na Mara, Gaelcholáiste Phort láirge, St Angela’s Ursuline and Blackwater Community School.

Other topics from the local pupils included how seaweed affects plant growth, the efficacy of energy drinks, and the effects that plants have on students. The overall winners of the BT Young Scientist Exhibition were Aditya Joshi (15), and Aditya Kumar (16), 3rd year students from Synge Street, in Dublin. They have taken home the top prize for a project entitled ‘A New Method of Solving the Bernoulli Quadrisection Problem’. The students presented their project in the Intermediate section in the Chemical, Physical & Mathematical Sciences category. Commending the winning project, Professor Pat Guiry, Professor of Synthetic Organic Chemistry at UCD and Chair of Group Chemical, Physical & Mathematical Sciences Judging Panel said: “The students presented a new approach to a problem that dates back to 1687, while also identifying areas of possible application in contemporary engineering.”

Your Wildlife Needs You!

podcast of the week book of the week

with Justin Ivory

Image by Richard Allen Firstly, I’d like to wish all the readers of this column a Happy New Year. While I am not one for making new year resolutions, as we head into 2022 I am making a plea for everybody to resolve and do more for wildlife and the natural environment. We are all aware of the Climate Emergency, and hopefully equally aware of the Biodiversity Emergency. They are separate emergencies, but climate change is accelerating the speed and scale of biodiversity loss, but is just one of many factors driving this loss. We should also be aware that not addressing biodiversity loss is going to have more cataclysmic consequences for humanity in a quicker timeframe than climate change. Basically the other species we share this planet with can survive happily without us, but most certainly cannot survive with other species and properly functioning ecosystems. Below is a list of simple things that we can all do to help. Pick one, several, or all of the below and do your bit to help halt and reverse biodiversity loss. 1. Make your garden wildlife friendly 2. Join an environmental NGOs such as Irish Widlife Trust, Bat Conservation Ireland, BirdWatch Ireland etc. 3. Join a local community group who are doing something for the environment. There are more of them than ever. Your local Tidy Towns group is always a good place to start. 4. Adopt your local river, stream or lake and help look after it. There may already be a local group that you can join. Water systems are a key and vital part of our environment and need local communities to help raise awareness of them and protect them. 5. Responsible Recreation. Follow local rules, keep to existing tracks and trails, keep dogs on lead or under control, follow the Leave No Trace principles, only park in permitted areas and move on if there is no safe parking left.

Cameras and gardaí might serve us better than gender crime lectures

M

any people h a v e expressed a hope that the murder of Ashling Murphy will prove a watershed; that the tragedy will re-shape the pattern of Irish society, making men more respectful to women and giving women less cause to fear men.

Michael Wolsey

I share that hope although I am doubtful whether the platitudes and vague promises will really translate into new ways of thinking and acting. I won’t be holding my breath. If the killing does prove a watershed it will be the start of a lengthy process. It could make Ireland a better place in years to come but it will not reduce the possibility of a similar crime being

GRADE V STAFF OFFICER

committed next week or next month. For that to happen we need to learn lessons from the killing of the young teacher on a walkway beside a canal and that won’t be possible until there has been a trial and the full facts are known. The few facts to emerge so far have been swept out of sight by a tide of emotion and people have been jumping to all sorts of unfounded conclusions. There has been a lot of talk about misogyny and genderbased violence. Misogyny means a hatred of women and there is not the slightest reason to suppose it was a factor in this crime, which was gender-based only in the simple sense that it was committed by a man on a woman. When the full facts emerge we may learn the motive for the attack on Ashling Murphy. For the moment, we know nothing about it. But we know that in crimes of this sort the motive is usually robbery and that the consumption of drugs and alcohol often plays a part. And crimes of this sort are common, although generally not with such terrible consequences. The attack on Ms Murphy was unusual because it happened in

broad daylight near quiet Tullamore. If it had happened beside a canal in Dublin nobody would be surprised. A woman was murdered by the banks of the city’s Grand Canal four years ago. Another woman suffered serious injuries there a few months later and last year two men were charged with a string of attacks and robberies on the same canal stretch. In December, a group of youths were arrested for muggings on a canal near Clondalkin. An Asian woman was pushed into the Royal Canal in what appeared to be a racist incident. And last October, a man told the extraordinary story of how he had swum across the Royal Canal to escape attackers who had robbed him at knifepoint. These attacks near canals are in line with a general increase in crime in public places. The Liffey boardwalk has not been a pleasant place for years and is simply not safe at night. There are other parts of our capital city’s centre that are best avoided, where, even if you don’t become a victim of crime, you are likely to witness drug dealing, drug taking, aggressive begging and public urination. Crime and disorder in public

places has increased in the past two years because the streets have not had their usual footfall. And while Dublin, because of its size, has suffered most, there are reports of similar deterioration from Limerick, Galway, Waterford and Belfast. There may be societal reasons behind the rise in street crime. But while we are trying to figure out what they are, and what to do about them, there are practical remedies that can be taken: better lighting, more CCTV cameras, more Garda patrols on public walkways and a ruthless crackdown on public drug use. It’s possible that the need for some of these measures may be reinforced by the facts of Ashling Murphy’s murder, when they do emerge. The emotion aroused by her killing is understandable because she was a lovely young woman with her whole life ahead of her. But, away from the emotion, there are practical actions that need to be taken to prevent crimes of this sort. While we are waiting for the watershed to take effect, a few extra lights, cameras and Garda patrols could be more valuable than a million words about misogyny and gender-based violence.

NEWYEARNEWYOU

Ditch the winter blues with these healthy tips Physical fitness should be a vital part of everyone’s daily routine, but that doesn’t mean committing to a fitness programme is easy. Staying active and fit costs time and effort. Without the proper drive and desire, you may not be able to turn an irregular exercise into a daily habit. By understanding the various benefits or advantages of staying physically fit, you may be better motivated to commit to making exercise and physical activity a part of your daily life. Improve Health A primary benefit to staying physically fit is improving your body systems’ function. For example, your cardiovascular health improves through a stronger heart, resilient blood vessels and decreased blood pressure. Other health benefits

include improved mood and selfconfidence, along with increased energy levels. A well-rounded routine that includes aerobic fitness, strength training and flexibility exercises is ideal for improving overall health.

Weight Management One of the most tangible and obvious benefits of staying active is proper weight management. As you take in calories through healthful eating, physical activity burns calories, allowing you to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight. Staying physically fit allows you to burn calories and shed excess body fat. Disease Prevention By managing your weight and cholesterol levels through exercise, you may prevent certain chronic diseases, such as Type 2

diabetes, some cancers and heart disease. Exercise helps to lower your low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, cholesterol – which contributes to plaque in the arteries – and raises your highdensity lipoprotein, or HDL, cholesterol – which cleans your arteries of LDL cholesterol to improve blood flow.

Stronger Immune System One often unknown benefit of staying physically fit is the advantage to your immune system. In short, people who are physically fit are less likely to be affected by sickness, such as the cold and flu, and they have less severe symptoms when they do get sick. Iindividuals who exercise for at least 45 minutes five times per week are less likely to suffer from respiratory infections.

Better Quality of Life Your overall quality of life is vastly improved when you stay physically active. Exercise helps relieve stress, improves your self-esteem and confidence and boosts your mood – thanks to the stimulation and release of endorphins, which are feel-good chemicals that are released into your system when you exercise. Maximise Performance Athletes and other competitors stay physically fit to maximise athletic performance with the ultimate goal of maximising an athlete’s overall fitness. Regular Exercise A sustained regimen of strenuous physical activity is the most effective way to achieve physical fitness.
