Fire Chief warns of bonfire danger THE Chief Fire Officer of Waterford, Niall Curtin, has issued a warning regarding the dangers of bonfires as Halloween approaches, highlighting the alarming number of callouts last year. “Last year, brigades from Waterford Fire Service attended 46 bonfires and other outdoor fires on Halloween night and the two weeks leading up to it,” he said. “Bonfires are dangerous, potentially leading to burns, inhalation of toxic fumes and injury from exploding cylinders and canisters. They cause significant damage to property and public amenity space. “Unfortunately, on occasion we have been faced with antisocial behaviour at these fires that has hindered fire personnel doing their jobs in a safe manner. I would urge businesses and the public to do their utmost to ensure they do not facilitate such fires. Please report the building of bonfires or storage of bonfire material to Waterford City and County Council.” And in a plea to all businesses, Raymond Moloney, from the

Environment Department, has requested that businesses do not supply waste material to anyone who does not hold a valid waste collection permit. “The uncontrolled burning of waste, particularly in bonfires, is illegal and releases toxic pollutants into the air, which are known to be damaging to our health and environment,” he warned. “The use of accelerants on bonfires can pose a significant safety risk and threat to the public. We would urge the public to report materials being hoarded such as pallets, tyres, combustible waste or old furniture, by getting in touch with the Council’s Waste Enforcement Section.” Meanwhile, while it seems to go against the spirit of Halloween scaretime, parents and guardians have been asked to ensure that if children are wearing dark Halloween costumes, they carry a torch or use reflective aids or hi-vis clothing so they will be seen by motorists, cyclists — and by their own parents when they go trick or treating!

04 | news in brief Waterford has highest Covid rates WATERFORD City has emerged as having one of the highest rates of Covid-19 infection in Ireland, with a recent local incidence rate of 1,486 per 100,000 of the population. This is three times the national average, which currently stands at 493 infections per 100,000 people. Despite the county having the highest vaccination rates in the Republic, Waterford city GP Niall McNamara said there did not appear to be any one single reason why the county has such a high rate. “It’s Waterford today, but it could be any other county tomorrow, given the transmissibility of the virus,” he said.

Irish Audiology Specialists Give the Gift of Hearing Five lucky people from around the country, with hearing difficulty, heard some especially good news this week! Winners in the Hidden Hearing Gift of Hearing summer giveaway were announced, and entrants from Waterford, Dublin, Antrim, Clare and Cork had reason to celebrate. Each will now get the latest new Oticon More hearing aids fitted by their local Hidden Hearing audiologist, completely free, to help restore all the sounds and experiences missing in their lives.
Hidden Hearing is Ireland’s largest exclusive provider of hearing healthcare and regularly gifts hearing aids to deserving recipients who might not otherwise have access to the latest devices. This latest campaign featured the new life-changing Oticon More hearing aids that use powerful software providing 360-degree surround sound, with more definition than ever.
Connecting People Over €35,000 worth of hearing aids as well as Vodafone smartphones were won in the Gift of Hearing giveaway. The initiative was designed to help people reconnect with family and friends after the challenges of the pandemic, which compounded the effects of hearing loss for many. Hearing is essential to connect people, Dolores Madden, Audiologist and Marketing Director at Hidden Hearing, says. “We see the hugely positive impact hearing aids have in our clinics every day. it is to be peripheral to the conversation and denied the sounds of everydaylife, you can’t imagine a persons joy when their hearing loss is restored.

For many people, the introduction of mask-wearing during Covid showed the extent to which their hearing had deteriorated. Often, without knowing, they were relying on lip-reading to help with poor hearing and missing out on everyday sounds. “I have to say that they are marvellous. I can go out into my garden and hear every trickle and gurgle in the shallow stream that runs through it. I can hear with great joy the crisp leaves rustling in the breeze, especially this Autumn season. And of course, I no longer have to strain to hear someone speak to me nor do I have to say pardon umpteen times.”, competition winner, Richard says.
“The pandemic taught us the value of staying in touch, and the pleasure of engaging with others. So, it really doesn’t make sense to ignore hearing loss, especially when it is easily fixed with the right hearing aids”, she adds. Research earlier this year for Hidden Hearing showed 88% of Irish adults missed the sound of catch-ups with friends in a café during the Covid-19 period. Nearly 7 in 10 (68%) missed the sound of a busy pub, full of conversation, and 1 in 3 (32%) Irish adults said they missed the sweet sound of music and theatre performances.
Crystal Clear Oticon More hearing aids provide the ultimate connectivity, linking to other connected devices like phones or the TV.
Richard and his wife Eilis with Waterford’s Hidden Hearing Audiologist Stephen Kelly Wearers can stream music favourites directly to their hearing aids, make handsfree calls from any smartphone, or have crystal clear sound direct from the TV or radio. Irish Rugby legend, Tony Ward, is an Oticon More user and he maintains “You can pick up every little sound perfectly naturally. Whether it’s birds singing or water lapping, the sounds that I previously lost are back again, and it’s such a lovely feeling”. These new life-changing rechargeable hearing aids make sounds up to 60% clearer and help users understand 15% more of what has been said than any other hearing aid developed to date.
Clinics Countrywide Hidden Hearing clinics operate countrywide. The hearing healthcare providers are Ireland’s longest established exclusive hearing-care experts, with 30 years’ experience in local communities countrywide. Safety protocols are in place at all Hidden Hearing clinics for the utmost patient care, so visitors can attend appointments in complete confidence.

A further five lucky entrants in the Gift of Hearing scheme won a hi-tech new Vodafone smartphone. Due to cuttingedge Bluetooth technology, smartphones can provide the ultimate connectivity to other digital devices like hearing aids, for calls, listening to music, the TV or radio. Ref: A6LY-1

88% of children Volunteers have new way to connect online worried about climate change
WITH Waterford the recent winner in Ireland’s Best Place to Live competition, it is little wonder that our residents — particularly our youth — are having growing concerns about its future. In a new survey of more than 1000 school-aged children, more than three-quarters say climate change is something they worry about — but within County Waterford, that number jumps to 88%, with two out of every three pupils wanting to see climate change taught as a separate subject in school. The survey was conducted by the Climate and Nature Summit, Ireland’s first climate change summit, which is bringing together school-aged children, teachers, educators and activists at the event which will run from the 1st to the 5th of November 2021. Local 6th year student, Matthew Murray, highlighted his concerns and made a plea for people to increase their awareness of the issues.
“The climate and nature emergency makes me feel worried yet optimistic for the future that we can improve the overall standard of life for everyone. It’s vital that people attend the climate and nature summit so it can give you a new perspective of what’s really going on around you,” said Matthew. The summit will coincide with COP26 in Glasgow and aims to highlight the magnitude of the climate and ecological emergency that is happening across the world today and to help equip young people with the knowledge, confidence and skills to bring about change. The summit is open to all schools and will aim to highlight the positive actions that can be taken by all. Interestingly, the survey also showed that just 14% of Irish schoolchildren surveyed had actually heard about COP26. Patrick Kirwan, Founder of the Irish Sustainability Schools Network and one of the summit organisers said: “Our education
system exists to prepare our students for today’s society and unfortunately, that society has caused the current climate and ecological emergency. We urgently need a different approach. The results of this survey clearly demonstrate that our education system is falling short in relation to climate and ecological education. “The Climate and Nature Summit is a unique opportunity for primary and secondary schools to create a space for whole school collective conversations. This summit will energise and inspire teachers and students to realise their own agency to make a difference.” “The climate crisis is so urgent that organisations, driven by their core shared values, are putting their own business interests to one side to arm young people and educators with the skills, tools and knowledge they need.” For more information on the summit or to register your attendance, visit www. climateandnaturesummit.com.
At the launch of the new Waterford Volunteer Centre website were Catherine Power, Chairperson; Sharon Higgins, Centre Manager; and Paul Deegan, Placement & Development Officer. DO you have some free time on your hands? Have you ever considered doing some voluntary work for a cause that you have a passion for? Waterford Volunteer Centre has just launched a ‘one stop’ website for both volunteers and not-for-profit organisations to connect online. The new website follows the official launch of the Volunteer Centre in May this year and features information for individuals interested
in volunteering and also for groups and organisations that involve or require volunteers. The website will enable volunteers and organisations to register quickly and easily with Waterford Volunteer Centre through direct links to I-VOL, the national volunteering database. Commenting on the new website, Catherine Power, Chairperson, said: “We are excited to launch our new website and portal. As a new service to Waterford,
Empty pubs ‘could make good homes’ SOME 17 pubs have closed their doors in Waterford since the start of the pandemic, according to the latest figures taken from an analysis of licence renewals published by the Revenue Commissioners. It is a sorry statistic which reveals Covid’s dramatic impact on the trade over the past 19 months. And with a total of 349 pubs closed nationwide, a planning exemption to enable the use of former pubs for residential purposes would help drive the much-needed supply of housing, a Waterford senator has said. John Cummins, Fine Gael’s Seanad spokesman on Housing, welcomed confirmation from the Department of Housing that a review of planning regulations is under way to examine the possibility of providing for an exemption for the conversion of vacant pubs to residential use. “Waterford has been at the forefront of bringing derelict
and vacant properties back into use,” Senator Cummins said. “Fifty per cent of all Repair and Lease units nationally have been provided in Waterford, and this progress has rejuvenated areas of the city centre, delivering one and two bed family units. “We’ve been able to reduce the number of families in emergency accommodation by 93% in the period 2017 to 2020 and individual homeless figures by 55% despite presentations effectively doubling in the same period and we have eradicated the use of hotels and B&Bs. “While many housing units have been provided over the last couple of years in buildings which once housed pubs or restaurants, many had to go through a lengthy planning process which likely attracted development contributions and other associated professional costs. “Many former pubs would make excellent residential homes for individuals and families,” he said.
we believe it will be a great source of information for those wanting to know more about the supports and services we offer. One click is all it takes to find us, to learn about Waterford Volunteer Centre and the great work we do to assist communities in Waterford.” Visit the website at: www. volunteerwaterford.ie. or to get in touch with Waterford Volunteer Centre directly, call 083 0268144 or you can email info@volunteerwaterford.ie

Vaccine certs aren’t much use if nobody looks at them
B
efore the second announcement, publicans and people who run nightclubs were queing up to criticise the G o v e r n m e n t ’s plans for the re-opening of their businesses - or further opening, in the case of pubs. The publicans were complaining because they had to seat customers at tables before serving them and the nightclub owners were complaining for no reason at all that I could follow, except that everybody else was doing it. The Vintners Federation of Ireland (VFI) said the ban on standing at the bar was “a devastating blow”. When the rule was amended so that only drinking at the bar was banned, Padraig Cribben, the VFI chief executive, said the new regulation had created
Michael Wolsey
“a farcical situation”. The VFI should consider the beam in its own eye before moaning about the mote in the Government’s. Vaccine certificates are crucial to the further opening of entertainment and hospitality but many pubs have not been checking them while others have been making the checks in a cursory fashion that is next to useless. The same goes for some cafés and restaurants. An RTE survey found that one-in-three premises was not making the checks. My own observation has convinced me that the figure is even higher. When vaccine certificates were first issued, bar and restaurant owners were diligent about demanding them before admission, but the high standard was soon dropped. That’s what everyone was
saying and four weeks ago I decided to put it to the test. Since then, I have kept a note of the reception I received at every bar, restaurant and café I visited. To widen the sample, I called at these places more frequently than usual, nipping in for coffee or a drink, for breakfast, lunch or dinner. It’s a hard old job, I know, but somebody has to do it. I called at 10 different pubs. In four of them, staff made no reference at all to a vaccine certificate but simply showed me to a table. Only two of the pubs scanned my cert. The other four just looked at it - so I could have been showing them anyone’s certificate - and only one took my phone number. Restaurants seemed a little more diligent. My sample was smaller: two
out of six scanned the cert, two looked at it but didn’t scan it, one took my word that I had one and the sixth made no mention of a cert, although they consulted a screen to confirm my table reservation. Cafés and coffee shops were the most casual. I sat in 16 across the four weeks. Only four scanned my certificate. Another four just looked at it. Five of them took my word for it and did not insist on seeing a certificate even when I asked if one was needed. Three just waved me to a table. I really should have left the premises that did not ask for a certificate. There wouldn’t have been muich eating or drinking had I done so, but it is the right response and I will take it from now on. Publicans and caterers have had a tough time in the past
two years but it is hard to have sympathy with them on this certificate issue, particularly with publicans who are making such a fuss about the restrictions still faced by their trade. Obviously my survey was not scientific or very wide-ranging. But, for me, it confirmed the widespread impression that the hospitality business has not been taking this issue seriously. In one coffee shop I asked if I needed to show a vaccine certificate. The man at the counter looked puzzled. “Ah it’s all right,” he said. “You’ll be fine.” I sincerely hope so. I hope we will all be fine and that we will get through this latest twist in the Covid story with our public health and our hospital service largely intact. To do so, we need co-operation from everyone, including those on both sides of the bar, at which, for the moment, we are not allowed to drink.

The Living Dead!
art of the week
with Justin Ivory
Piles of leaves provide shelter and food for many creatures (Photo Justin Ivory) Depending on when and in which paper you are reading this in, Halloween is either just about to happen, or has just happened. Whatever the case we are not referring to flesh eating zombies or blood-sucking vampires, we are talking about leaves of all things! Through their death and decay leaves provide vibrancy and life to the world in a myriad of ways. With the wonderfully warm, mild, and sunny autumn we have been having there are still plenty of leaves on the trees and what a riot of amazing colour they have been painting. Yellows, reds and golden browns of many shades and intensities. In autumn leaves stop producing chlorophyll the pigment that gives them their green colour, revealing other pigments (xanthophylls and carotenes) that have been present all along but masked by the green chlorophyll. Xanthophylls are yellow and carotenes orange/red. Warm dry, sunny days followed by cool, frost-free nights lead to further chemical reactions that produce anthocyanins which are scarlet or purple. When the leaves finally die and fall to the ground, they become a vital life support for many other creatures and organisms. Leaf litter contains eggs, pupae, and caterpillars of many species of moth and butterfly. When leaves form piles, they provide shelter and food that help protect and sustain many creatures through the winter months. If the leaves are dry, then a hedgehog may make a hibernaculum in them. If they are damp, then frogs and newts may hibernate there. Many invertebrates, including millipedes, woodlice, earwigs, and beetles will shelter in leaves and may even lay eggs there. They in turn provide a food source to may birds such as blackbirds, robins, and thrushes. Earthworms and microbes break the leaves down to a mulch that feeds our soil. So this autumn and winter give yourself a rest and leave the leaves.

Waterford Distillery has launched Biodynamic: Luna, the world’s first biodynamic whiskey, described as ‘uber-organic’. The whiskey, which is the vision of CEO Mark Reynier, has been in development for several years and is the first to be made with solely biodynamic barley. It is the second instalment in Waterford Whisky’s Arcadian series, which showcases the flavours produced by forgotten ways of historic farming and rare barely varieties. It don’t come cheap . . . but good things never do! The new whiskey retails at a smooth €90.
THIS Oscar-nominated drama tells the story of the events leading up to the Srebrenica massacre, in which 8,372 Bosnian Muslims were killed. It focuses on one UN worker who was caught between trying to protect her family, herself, and helping people in need. The film is as horrific as it is relevant: up until the actual killing starts, people are constantly being assured that everything is under control and that there is no reason to panic. It stops at depicting any of the acts that were committed that day but it is an unforgiving portryal nonetheless.

Planning for a bereavement
waterford-today.ie October 27, 2021
Losing a loved one is a heartbreaking time and trying to plan a funeral can be extremely difficult while greiving. This is why more and more people are opting to preplan their funerals - to ensure that their life is celebrated as they wish and to relieve some of the pressure and stress for those left behind. Planning a funeral or memorial service is a highly personal process, and your decisions will be shaped by your life experiences, your relationship to the deceased, what the deceased wanted or what you desire for yourself after you die, what you can afford, and a myriad of other factors. Making funeral plans at the time of death are particularly difficult because the time frame is short and emotions are high as survivors are dealing with their grief. By making the choice to preplan, funeral plans can be made at any time and offer many advantages. Funeral Homes, cemeteries and other funeral service companies can help you preplan a funeral for yourself, your spouse or a parent. There are many things to consider when planning a funeral and it can be helpful to leave a guide for those who will be organising it. Make sure that you have made your wishes known, such as whether you would like to be buried or cremated, if there is a specific song or reading you would like at the ceremony. Funerals are quite expensive and so it is worth looking into funeral insurance or other financial planning to ease the financial burden. If planning ahead, be sure to look around at the different services offered and before signing any contracts be clear about what is included in the price. For those who find themselves planning for a loved one, many websites offer a useful ‘checklist’ to assist you in the process. You may want to think about other ways of making the funeral reflect the life of the person who has died. People sometimes like to include elements that will add a special touch to the funeral service. Some of the things people choose include horse-drawn hearses or the release of balloons. Following the funeral service, you may want to consider a memorial. Memorials are a way to remember our loved ones and can range from headstones at a grave to a simple flower in a garden of remembrance. Memorials provide comfort for many people, giving them a place to visit to remember the person who has died. When choosing a memorial it is important that you have time to reflect on your decision and understand the different regulations that may affect your choice.

Too young to die, too precious to lose, Precious people are very few, That’s why Gavin, there was only one of you. That awful day you left us Is always on our mind, And though we try to reason why, No answers we can find. God must have known how much we’d hurt The day he made us part, When he took away our lovely son, He surely broke our hearts. He must have had his reasons, A mystery, still to us, He must have had a special place That no-one else can fill. We miss your sunny nature, Your smiling, happy face, And no-one else in the world Could ever take your place. You’ll never be forgotten Gavin, I’m sure you know that’s true, You can’t forget someone you love As much as we love you. One special person, one special face, And in our hearts, a special place, Gavin no words, no verse can really say, What we feel on this your anniversary. We want to tell you something Gavin So there won’t be any doubt, You’re so wonderful to think of But so hard to do without. - We will never forget you Gavin, we love and miss you now and always, from your broken hearted Mam and Dad xxx Along the road of yesterday That takes us back to you, And memories of us together And happy times we knew, We shared so much together, Laughter, joy and tears, For us who thought so much of you, They were our happiest years, Nothing can replace you Gavin, Nothing ever will, In life we loved you dearly, In death we love you still, The precious years won’t come again When we were all together, But the love and joy you gave us Will stay with us forever. - remembering and missing you always, from your brother Ricky and Paula. God took the strength of a mountain, The majesty of a tree, The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea, The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night, The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagles flight, The joy of a morning in spring, The faith of a muster seed, The patience of eternity, The depth of a family need, Then God combined these qualities When there was nothing more to cover, He knew his masterpiece was complete.... Yes, he is my brother. - Gavin, ‘I miss you like the desert misses the rain’, thinking of you always, your sister Jennifer. I often lie awake at night, When the world is fast asleep, I think about the brother I lost With tears upon my cheek. I cannot get over losing you Gavin I don’t even want to try, I will always keep you in my heart Until the day I die.

Spokes featuring guest poet Frank Farrelly Spokes is back on site at Phil Grimes pub Waterford City on Fridya November 19th at 8pm. with an open mic slot for people to bring one of their own poems or a poem to recite... music slots open too. Blackbird at Garter Lane On Friday November 5th at 8pm at Garter Lane Arts Centre OConnel Street, Blackbird is a complex portrayal of two people whose damaged lives are inextricably intertwined. Winner of the Olivier Award for Best Play, produced by Four Rivers in association with Theatre Royal Waterford. Fifteen years ago, Una and Ray’s relationship had a profound and devastating effect on both their lives. They haven’t set eyes on each other since. Now in a tense confrontation the past returns to torment them as they unravel their deeply conflicted feelings for each other. Revelations and recriminations fly in this lacerating and controversial story of betrayal, abandonment and lust. Tickets bit.ly/3mUU4ZK
Wet weather doesn’t deter sand art activists On the morning of Saturday the 9th over sixty members of the Bonmahon community descended on the Co. Waterford beach in an effort to highlight needed improvements to the areas present waste water facilities. This was a follow up to a petition signed by over 650 residents, submitted to Waterford City and County Council as part of a group submission to the County Development Plan. This submission requested an upgraded sewage treatment plant for Bonmahon, given that all of its current public group systems are designated as being “at capacity”. Environmental Artist Sean Corcoran facilitated a collaborative sand art event
where all the attendees got involved. The participants were encouraged to draw H20 in the sand and then circle the design in order to demonstrate how serious their community is about protecting the water quality in the area. The event highlighted the commitment, passion and collective drive for continued improvements to the beautiful seaside village. Jamie Power, local resident, engineer and member of the Bonmahon Water Quality Initiative said ‘Bonmahons current public system of waste water treatment is what can only be described as antiquated. The systems are simply not capable of catering for the additional loadings which have been
added to them over the past fifty years since the tanks were first installed. As a result the water quality issues of Bonmahon need to be addressed now as a priority”. The event was attended by several local politicians including Cllr. Conor McGuiness, Cllr. Seanie Power and Minister Mary Butler who expressed their interest in supporting the community in addressing the issues raised. To date the group have sought feedback from Irish Water, The EPA, Waterford City and County Council and An Taisce, and they hope to see a collective effort made towards the implementation of a fit for purpose waste water treatment plant for the area.

1st Anniversary & Birthday Remembrance Stephen Whittle
In loving memory of Stephen Whittle, late of, Marian Park Dunmore East Co. Waterford, whose 1st anniversary takes place on 17th October, and whose birthday occurs on 5th November
Who died 7th October 2021. The O’Sullivan family wish to acknowledge with thanks everyone who sympathised with them on the recent death of their brother Addy. Thank you to those who sent mass cards, floral tributes and who placed condolences on RIP.ie. As it is impossible to thank everyone individually, we hope that this acknowledgement will be accepted by all as a token of our appreciation. The holy sacrifice of the mass wil be offered for your intentions. Addy’s months mind mass will be held on Sunday 7th November at 11:30 in Ballybricken church. PRAYER TO ST JUDE Most holy apostle St Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus. I am so helpless and alone. I implore you to bring visible and speedy help. Come to my assistance in this great need (ask for favour). I will be ever mindful of this great favour, to always honour you as my special and powerful patron. Amen. Promise publication and favour will be granted O.W. Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Take it Dear Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart, where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. A.P. Death is nothing at all. It does not count. I have only slipped away into the next room. Nothing has happened. Everything remains exactly as it was. I am I, and you are you, and the old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged. Whatever we were to each other, that we are still. Call me by the old familiar name. Speak of me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference into your tone. Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without an effort, without the ghost of a shadow upon it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was. There is absolute and unbroken continuity. What is this death but a negligible accident? Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just round the corner. All is well. Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before. How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again - From his Loving Family o holy st anthony Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore of you to obtain for me my request. The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so you are the saint of miracles. O gentle and loving St Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, intercede for me and whisper my prayer into the ear of the sweet Infant Jesus who loved to linger in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will be yours. J.P.

Play will be stableford off the white markers and you must use the small 18 hole scorecard taking your shots as they fall on the 18 hole card. No Yellow Cards please. Our weekend competition will be 16 hole stableford off the white markers. A Domestic penalty points system will apply to all winter rules competitions. Penalty points are based on the cumulative value of a players winnings. All this means extra work for your committee and we would appreciate your full cooperation. Enjoy your winter golf. Inactive Season Winter rules Golf The mens committee at West Waterford have agreed to introduce winter rules with effect from Monday October 18th. This means that scores in club competitions at West Waterford are not eligible for handicap purposes until further notice. We are also requesting members not to return scores on the Golf Ireland app for casual golf played in the club during the inactive season. Members playing at an away course may qualify for handicap adjustment based on the current rules on the particular course. Members can check their handicap index from the list on our notice board and calculate their playing handicap (95% of course handicap). Of course you can also use the Golf Ireland App. Players are reminded to check their handicap index regularly for any changes, bearing in mind that your handicap is your responsibility. We would appreciate your cooperation in complying with the current rules of play and should you have any queries just mark your card as usual and please write (check my Index) on your card. Winter rules mean that
you can mark, lift, clean and place your ball on the fairway and in the rough. Bunkers are in play unless otherwise specified.
