D-day for council on €1m funds gap FRIDAY is decision day for Waterford Council as it struggles to agree a budget despite a huge gap in its finances. The Government has eased the problem by granting the local authority an extra €2 million to help bridge the €3.3m gap caused by a change in the way Irish Water pays its rates. But that still leaves a shortfall of more than a million euro to be met by increasing rates or cutting services. Councillors are deeply divided on the issue with Sinn Féin vowing to “stand firm” against cutbacks and People Before Profit threatening “a people power campaign of nonpayment” against any increase in rates or rents. Others have welcomed the increase in Government funding. It was announced by Fine Gael councillor and election candidate, John Cummins, who said his colleague, housing minister Eoghan Murphy,

had granted the council an additional €2 million to assist in the budgetary process. He pointed out that the council had dealt with a budget shortfall of €1.2m some years ago. “The current shortfall, while challenging. is now commensurate with that figure following our increased subvention of €2 million and I am sure there will be a vast array of opinions on how that gap should be closed,” he said. The shortfall has been caused by a decision to treat Irish Water like other public utilities and spread its rate payments throughout the country, in proportion to use, rather than going to the counties where the company’s properties are sited. “There is nothing unusual about difficult budgets,” said Cllr Cummins. “In fact, our income from Irish Water (separate to rates) has dropped by €3.2 million over the past Turn to page 4

five years while our housing maintenance budget, for example, has increased by €985,000 over the same period. Difficult decisions always face the pact of the day but positions come with responsibility. Over the past decade when we were members of the controlling group we always managed to pass a balanced budget.” If a council refuses to strike a budget, the Government has the power to step in, suspend the authority, and order measures to fix the problem. People Before Profit, in a statement, called on councillors to “ignore any threat of abolition if no agreement is reached”. It said that, if the council were suspended, it would organise a campaign of non-payment “in conjunction with other progressive forces including community organisations and trade unions”. Sinn Féin TD for Waterford David Cullinane called for compensation from the Government. He said the allocation of €2m was for one year only and did not address the problem but was “a sticking plaster solution”.
Centres sought to house 560 refugees
THE Government is seeking accommodation for 560 asylum applicants in Waterford and four other counties in the South East. It has promised to engage with local communities as it moves to finalise negotiations on the locations of new regional direct provision centres. The State has issued tender documents to find accommodation for 5,500 asylum seekers spread across the 26 counties for one-year contracts worth €324 million. The other South East counties involved are Carlow, Kilkenny, Tipperary and Wexford. In the midlands, which covers counties Longford, Westmeath, Offaly and Laois, accommodation for a minimum of 425 people is sought. In the mid-west, which covers counties Clare, Limerick and Tipperary, accommodation is sought for 318 people. Evaluation is under way for bids in the southwest and western region, which covers Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Cork and Kerry.. Accommodation for a minimum of 1,400 asylum seekers is needed in these areas. Bids for the mideast region - Kildare, Wicklow, Meath and Louth - will be considered shortly. According to the tender
documents, accommodation is needed for a minimum of 1,256 people there. Advertisements for bids for the Dublin region were published on September 18 and advertisements for the Border region, covering Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Monaghan and Donegal, were published on October 14. Accommodation for 1,370 asylum seekers is needed there. Details of where the remainder of the 5,500 places will be located have not yet been revealed. The secretary general of the Department of Justice, Aidan O’Driscoll, has written to the Public Accounts Committee, describing as “highly unsatisfactory” that more than 1,500 asylum seekers were currently being housed in hotels. The situation “can only be shortterm”, he added. “The Department of Justice and Equality needs to find new accommodation centres as the numbers of people arriving to seek international protection in the State continue to rise, figures are up 50 per cent so far this year. Because of a shortage of places in centres, there are now, as of October 29th, 1,531 people in emergency accommodation in hotels and guesthouses,” Mr O’Driscoll said.

Happy new year for Faithlegg’s facelift
FAITHlEGG Golf Club is looking forward to substantial refurbishment next year. Its owners, FBD Hotels & Resorts, plan to invest in the green side bunkers on the course, refurbish the locker
rooms and pro shop and to complete the final phase of the machinery upgrades, including a fairway mower and machinery for aerating the greens on the course. And they will be adding more buggies to the fleet.
It will be the fifth year of a substantial investment programme by FBD Hotels & Resorts into Faithlegg Golf Club as they continue to improve the course and facilities. “We are now coming to the end of the large investment programme by FBD Hotels,” said Director of Golf, Karl Cullen. “Having the green side bunkers renovated is a massive undertaking and will improve the course consistency for the large number of members and guests who play Faithlegg.” Faithlegg Golf Club has announced a new dual club partnership with The Heritage Golf Club in Co. Laois. It will allow societies to play both courses for a reduced rate. Societies that play both courses will be invited back at the end of 2020 to play for a prize of a three-night stay at La Cala Golf Resort in Spain to be won by the top society from each club. 2020 is shaping up to be a big year for Faithlegg Golf who are also looking forward to hosting the AIG Senior Cup Qualifiers for the first time. lobal stock markets have been on a bull run for almost 10 years. Analysts and investors now ponder for how long more this Bull Run might last. Investors requiring shortterm access to their funds are faced with a dilemma. Do they withdraw funds now and place them in cash delivering zero returns? Do they hang on, hope there will be more growth in markets and then get out before the next big fall. Predictions about the end of the Bull Run have been around for more than 4 years now. Professional fund managers, no less, have been guilty of reducing their exposure to equities as long as four years ago and increasing their cash holdings. This caused an inevitable impact on their funds’ investment performances especially as global equities have grown in three of the last four years. Their dilemma now is, if equities were too expensive four years ago, when will they be cheap enough to get back into
to the general population and consumers are feeling bullish. US consumers are the key factor in economic growth because consumer spending accounts for 70% of US GDP. Retail in the US is very dependent on sales in the 4th quarter of the year. In 2018, retail sales bucked the trend and fell sharply, putting retailers and suppliers under pressure. Analysts are predicting a return to normality this year. Trade war tariffs have increased prices with the potential to reduce sales. However, the recent cooling off in hostilities between the US and China, with further action being delayed and discussions beginning for a ceasefire are undoubtedly related to the upcoming Presidential election. The incumbent President will not want to do anything to hurt the US consumer before the election.

the market? There seems to be a consensus building that equities could continue to grow for another year or possibly two. That consensus is based on the US consumer and the US - China Trade war. DUBLIN OLD SCHOOL It seems that no matter where you are on the social scale there is no getting away from hierarchy. Even if you are a drug addict it would appear that some drug addicts are better than other drug addicts. In this movie that seems to be one of the central themes when two brothers who haven’t seen each other in an age meet up by accident on the streets of Dublin. One likes to pop pills by the cartload and the other is a heroin addict, the shame of the family, because when it comes to drug addiction heroin, it seems, is the lowest of the low. The pill popping brother has a job in a record shop which he is just about managing to hold down while the other is just back from living on the streets in London to live on the streets of Dublin. There is a lot of chaotic running around, lost phones, bumming money and trying to score in this movie which is something that you might expect. What is more difficult to grasp are the ever increasing poetic flights of fancy that the film takes. It is one thing to try and be all urban and gritty and quite another to be lyrical about those experiences and this movie just can’t pull it off and the overall effect is quite jarring and discordant. The writer and director and everyone involved might have wanted to say something profound with this movie but they don’t quite pull it off.

266 horses seized as council reins in strays THOUSANDS of stray or abandoned horses have been seized by councils in Ireland since 2015, according to the latest official figures. Across Waterford city and county 266 have been seized. Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed told the Dáil the number being seized by county and city authorities is dropping. But the figures reveal big variations in the numbers
seized from county to county. In Waterford 31 horses had been seized by the end of September, compared to 28 for the whole of last year. Mr Creed said the Control of Horses Act 1996, provides the necessary powers to local authorities to deal with stray and abandoned horses. He said the Act contains provisions for the licencing and identification of horses and was introduced to

address the issues caused by stray and wandering horses due to public safety concerns. “The number of horses being seized nationally continues to decline,” he said. “This reduction is reflective of a number of factors including initiatives by my Department in the animal welfare area as well as active enforcement of the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013.”
MADELINE CASTAING: A LIFE. Madeline Castaing was as famous for the way she lived her life as she was for genius for interior designing. For some reason she always wore wigs even though her own hair was fine but what was even more quizzical was what she did to her face. To combat the signs of aging she thought it was a wonderful idea to wear a huge elastic band around her face to lift everything up. Those who knew her pointed out that everyone could see the elastic band so why was she doing it to which she always replied ‘but I can’t see it’. Her real innovations were the way in which she approached interior design. Her main credo was to find ‘the perfection in the imperfection’ of a room. When a room was finished being painted she made her workers take the dust from the vacuum cleaners and spread it all over the walls. Nothing should ever look too new or too perfect. She was also a fierce champion of the 19th century manner of decor and reusing old pieces.. It might seem that all of this was quite rarified, and to an extent it was and is, but the way she viewed the world still has relevance to how we live today.
Council policy is blamed for illegal dumping
WATERFORD council is contributing to the problem of heavy electrical equipment being illegally dumped in residential areas, a councillor has claimed. Councillor Eamon Quinlan blames the council’s policy of not taking in commercial electrical equipment at its civic disposal centres. He said the local authority takes in a huge variety of items at its civic centres and disposes of them for people either for a small fee or free of charge. But the council refuses to take office equipment such as photocopiers and printers. “Other county councils do take in this type of equipment for a small disposal fee,” said the Fianna Fáil councillor. “This short sighted policy means we are ensuring the cost of doing business in Waterford is higher
than comparable counties nearby. This is crazy stuff we really aren’t helping either ourselves or local economy with this type of carry on”. “The regulations around this issue are known as the WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) where the costs of recycling the items must be incorporated into the costs at sale. This can be done by the seller or the customer,” the councillor said in a statement. “Environmental authorities have been dealing with an upsurge as people seek to avoid these charges by purchasing without the recycling fee but then illegally dumping them around local communities. This has lead to a domino effect of not just electrical equipment but all manner of office equipment being dumped in traditional residential areas.
“The costs of taking these dumped items away is ultimately born by the council and its taxpayer-funded resources. This is a slap in the face to all those who pay to have their rubbish dealt with officially. If we are ultimately to bear the cost, then let’s take them in at our facilities, charge a small fee, and not have this stuff being dumped on sides of roads and in ditches. “ I have had calls from parents who find dirty chairs left on estate greens and dangerous electrical equipment left out where children stumble upon them . “ We don’t want anyone to get hurt. The council’s position undermines not only our street cleaners but the efforts of local communities who through Tidy Towns are really pushing us out there as a consistent performer.”

Fresh hope for families seeking to stay in homes THERE is fresh hope for Waterford householders disqualified from a Government scheme designed to keep them in their homes. New figures from the Housing Agency show that 77 households in the county were ruled out of the Mortgage To Rent scheme that aims to keep homeowners with unsustainable debt in their current homes. However, a leading expert in the field says many of those who had their applications rejected could now find solutions thanks to changes in the scheme which allows householders to remain in their homes as tenants of their local authority, paying an affordable incomebased rent. “There has been a widening of the house value eligibility parameters by the Government, which have risen to €305,000 in Waterford,” said Paul Cunningham, CEO of the only Government-approved private Mortgage To Rent operator, Home For Life. “Another reason is Home For
Life’s arrival into the scheme. Unlike many other operators, we are happy to consider rural dwellings or houses that need money spent on them to bring them up to a good standard. “In the past, those two categories were responsible for high numbers of termination decisions. “Home For Life is happy to assess each case on its merits and we will do everything in our power to ensure that those wanting their mortgage debt resolved can achieve that. “We do not reject cases because of the location of the property or the level of repairs needed which was a problem in the past.” According to Central Bank figures, there are over 400 family home loans around the county in arrears for two years or more. Under the Mortgage To Rent scheme, 34 cases have either been completed or are being actively progressed, and this number is expected to increase significantly in the coming 12 months.

Region is lagging in education and employment DESPITE the presence of Institutes of Technology in Waterford and Carlow, the South East is lagging behind the rest of the country when it comes to people with third-level qualifications. A new report published by the Central Statistics Office(CSO) indicates that this is hurting employment prospects in the region. It reveals a direct connection between high unemployment rates and the proportion of the population with third-level qualifications. The Educational Attainment Thematic Report survey shows early school leavers are up to three times more likely to be unemployed than those who have educational certificates. The recently published CSO figures reveal unemployment rates in the South East region currently stand at 7.2%, the highest of any region in the country. The Educational Attainment Thematic Report report reveals
that just 37% of people living in the region have third-level qualifications. This is in contrast to Dublin, where unemployment is as low as 4.2% and 57% of the people living in the region have thirdlevel qualifications. The South East ranks lower than the North West and Borders in both unemployment rates and third-level qualifications. Only the Midlands is on a par with the South East for people with third-level qualifications. Unemployment rates in that region there are marginally lower than in the South East. Nationally, the latest CSO figures reveal that 25% of early school leavers are unemployed compared to 8% of people with either secondary or third level qualifications in the 18-24 age group. Nearly half of all adults aged between 25-64 years old now possess a third level qualification (47%) in Q2 2019, while just 5% have no formal education.
Works on way for 15 local schools
FIFTEEN local schools will benefit from improvement works next summer funded by a Government scheme. They are Scoil Baile Mhic Airt, Carrickbeg NS, Ballyduff NS, Butlerstown NS, Scoil Naomh Muire Ballygunner, Fenor NS, Scoil Naomh Gobnait, Our Lady of Mercy Junior & Primary School, St. Mary’s NS Touraneena, Portlaw NS,Waterford Educate Together NS, Presentation Secondary School, Dungarvan College and St. Paul’s Community College. Cllr John Cummins said the works are a vital investment for the future education of students in Waterford. “As a secondary teacher myself I know the importance of continuing capital investment in our education system,” said the Fine Gael general election candidate. “Our students and staff deserve to have a quality teaching and learning environment.” Any school which receives funding for car parking will be required to identify a point for electric vehicle charging.

Opinion&Comment
news in brief
Never complain, never explain
T
he guiding principle of the British Royal family down through the decades of the 20th Century was ‘never complain, never explain’. The Royal Family always considered themselves above the fray of ordinary life and no matter the vicissitudes they encountered they always stood back relying on their natural reserve and the deference of the British public to carry them through whatever crisis they were embroiled in. That all began to change with the advent of a much more adversarial media towards the end of the century and the all out war that broke out in the Prince and Princess of Wales’ marriage. The British Royals might have had the indignity of seeing pictures of the Duchess of York having her toes sucked by a man other than her husband splashed all over the tabloids but it was the Wales’ marriage that had the potential to cause the most damage to the Royals. The Duchess was dealt with and packed off to America to tour the talk shows and flog tat on various shopping channels but Princess Diana was a different matter altogether. It was only when the Queen intervened and instructed the Prince and Princess to divorce did some semblance of normality return to the British Royals. There have been minor moments of scandal since then but nothing on the scale that has engulfed the Royals with the Duke of York’s involvement with child sex abuser Jeffrey Epstein culminating in a car crash interview a number of days ago. Not very bright, indulged and pampered as well as being feted wherever he goes through an accident of birth the Duke is the epitome of what the British Royals are all about. What has happened though, is that he and those around them have not fully understood the rules of the game they are involved in. In America the Royals are treated as celebrities, there is an intense interest in them. But they are not treated as Royals in the manner they are back home and in much of the rest of the world. So, when they mess up on a scale like the Duke has through his continued friendship with Epstein he is now suffering the backlash of the American public who would treat any other celebrity in such a manner. The Royals are not used to being questioned and put under scrutiny in such a manner and with Gloria Allred being one of the attorneys for some of the Epstein sex abuse victims this problem is not going away anytime soon. Dropping under the radar won’t work. The Duke of York will have to do a lot of explaining about his relationship with the child sex abuser Epstein yet.

It’s the €3bn National White Elephant Plan
W
ork on installations for the National Broadband Plan will begin in January and the Government believes it will all be completed by 2027. Well, that’s what it says. But there are elections looming and politicians would say Mass if they thought it would get them a few extras votes. Judging by other State projects, 2037 is a more realistic date and, given the problems that have jinxed this particular plan, we should probably add a few years to that. The saga began in 2012 with an announcement by the then Minister for Communications, Pat Rabbitte. His officials estimated that the scheme would cost €350m. Today the price is put at €3bn. By the time the work is finished, it will, I have no doubt, be the most costly project any Irish government has ever embarked on - one that will make the National Children’s Hospital
look like a model of fiscal rectitude. And I fear it will also prove to be a white elephant. When the Children’s Hospital is finally completed we will at least have a hospital. But there is no certainty that the Broadband Plan will deliver what is promised - high-speed broadband cabled to every house that wants it. That’s not what the contractor, National Broadband Ireland (NBI), is offering. NBI is a wholesaler, not a service supplier. It will lease lines to other retail operators who will then sell the broadband services to individual customers. NBI will bring its broadband to somewhere near your house. But if that house is at the end of a boreen, halfway up a mountain, you will still have to find an operator who is willing to hook you up and maintain the service come hell, high water, or the usual winter storms. Retail operators may not be easily found but, there again, I’m not sure there will be any great number of customers
clamouring for the service. We have been told by countless politicians that this plan is vital for the survival of rural Ireland but where is the proof of that contention? Of course, most people would like access to reliable and speedy broadband. But how fast does it have to be and why does the fibre have to be brought directly into every house? Quietly, without any fuss, several wireless services have been delivering broadband to homes around the country. One, called Imagine, has been supplying large swathes of the South East, including some pretty remote areas. A company called Viatel has brought excellent broadband to the Aran islands and another, called Ivertec, has brought it to Kerry’s Black Valley, the last place in Ireland to get electricity. It is not as fast as a full fibre service and it might not do for, say, a major company trading worldwide. But it is fast enough for home use and for small rural businesses. If you want to run an Amazon-
style company from your rural kitchen you may need the sort of service promised by the National Broadband Plan but for the vast majority of users, there are viable alternatives and advances in technology will make them more viable still. Work on the broadband plan will begin with a survey of ducts, poles and other infrastructure. Ducts? Poles? It’s sounding very dated already and the work has not even started. In the seven years since this plan was mooted, technology has advanced enormously. In the seven years it will take to complete (believe that if you will!) telecommunications will have changed beyond recognition. The Government is proposing to spend a fortune on a scheme which is not really needed, may never be fully supplied, and will probably be out of date before the work is finished. And they think that’s a vote winner? Think on, ministers, think on. - Michael Wolsey

christmas greetings from tramore
Time for Tramore to sparkle for Christmas
Elaine, Anne and Marie O’Connor. tramore is set to sparkle this Christmas! From Thursday 5th December the Christmas lights will brighten up the town and Santa and the Fairy Snow Queen will be there to enjoy the atmosphere, the musical performances as well as the Christmas Market. Gather at the Fairy Snow
Queen’s House outside Apache Pizza on Thursday, December 5th and follow her and her special friends down Main Street at 5pm in search of Santa, because we really need him to turn on the Christmas lights! There will be musical performances and a fabulous Christmas market on Queen Street, plus more. Santa will be too busy to join us on December 13th
and 20th but don’t worry, the Fairy Snow Queen and her friends will still be there to lead us in song down Main Street and don’t forget to look out for the fairies in the windows on your way! This event is being run by Waterford Chamber, in association with Waterford City & County Council. These are free events for all the family to enjoy!

Mesmerising Murmurations
book of the week
with Justin Ivory
Starling Murmuration (Photo Wikicommons William Baxter) Picture the scene. It is dusk on a winters’ evening. As the last light begins to fade in an otherwise featureless and lifeless skyline a strange phenomenon starts to unfold. Wave upon wave of black shapes arrive from all directions to coalesce into one huge, living, breathing entity. And so one of the most breath taking and awe inspiring performances you are ever likely to witness begins. The gigantic shadow creature begins an aerial, shape-shifting ballet. Constantly twisting and turning, ebbing and flowing so the dance continues. But look closer and you will see that the creature is not a single entity but consists of thousands, even millions of black specks moving in unison, for all the world like iron filings on a sheet of paper being controlled from beneath by a magnet. Suddenly as if a switch has been flicked, they drop from the sky and the performance is over for another day.
Juvenile Starling (Photo Justin Ivory) What you have just witnessed is a flock of starlings, or a murmuration, arriving at their evening, winter communal roost. The Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) is a highly sociable bird and they roost communally throughout the year. During the breeding season these roosts are relatively small and mainly consist of non-breeding birds. It is in late autumn and winter that these roosts can reach an incredible size, some in excess of a million individuals. Typically, the roosts are in small woods, reed beds or suitable man-made structures, although in recent years urban roosts have been in decline. While a murmuration is the collective noun for a group/flock of starlings it is particularly associated with the large winter groups and their pre-roost aerial stunts and acrobatics.

shadowplay
Inside Europe: 10 Years of Turmoil Wednesday 27 November 11.15pm RTE 1
Three extraordinary people begin their life together, a life that will be full of drama, transformation, passionate and painful devotion to art and to one another. Henry Irving, is the volcanic leading man and impresario; Ellen Terry is the most lauded and desired actress of her generation; and following along behind them in the shadows is the unremarkable theatre manager, Bram Stoker. Fresh from life in Dublin as a clerk, Bram is wrestling with dark demons in a new city and with his own literary aspirations. As he walks the London streets at night, streets haunted by the Ripper, he finds new inspiration.
A look at how Europe’s leaders fought one another over how to deal with the arrival of refugees and migrants from north Africa and Syria, bringing the EU to the brink of collapse. German chancellor Angela Merkel managed to wins over French president Francois Hollande to the idea of compulsory quotas for relocating migrants across the EU, but they ran into intense opposition from Eastern European member states - bringing the EU to brink of collapse as the leaders tried to force their deal through. Last in the series. Catch up on player.

film of the week
Last christmas Released 22 November 2019 Kate (Emilia Clarke) harumphs around London, a bundle of bad decisions accompanied by the jingle of bells on her shoes, another irritating consequence from her job as an elf in a yearround Christmas shop. Tom (Henry Golding) seems too good to be true when he walks into her life and starts to see through so many of Kate’s barriers. As London transforms into the most wonderful time of the year, nothing should work for these two. But sometimes, you gotta let the snowfall where it may, you gotta listen to your heart ... and you gotta have faith. Featuring the music of George Michael, including the classic of the film’s title.

Rough Edges are a jazz trio formed last year for the final year performance exam of pianist Killian Browne. The group consists of music alumni from the Waterford Institute of Technology, all who are active in the music scene of Waterford. Their repertoire consists of original compositions in the jazz idiom that fuse with other styles, such as traditional Irish music; and classic standards of the jazz tradition reimagined. The band consists of pianist Killian Browne, guitarist Brendan Hickey, bassist Sean Carey and drummer Eddy Blake.
The Christmas Truce occurred when a series of widespread unofficial ceasefires happened along the Western Front of World War I around Christmas. The Island of Ireland Peace Choir travelled to Messines, Belgium in 2014 to remember the Christmas Truce in song 100 years on. They will be joined by the Dublin High Hopes Choir on what promises to be a night to remember. Something timeless spilled out on the battlefields that must never be forgotten. Tickets FREE.
Birds Of Burden bring you melodic musings from Waterford. Consisting of Eoin Dalton Guitar, Vocals; Joe Meaghar - Vocals, Ukulele; Éadaoin Breathnach - Piano; Paul McDonald - Bass and Heather Troy-Whelan - Drums, Birds of Burden return to Downes on the 13th of December for a night of merriment and music that will warm your heart. There is a bridge of memory, From earth to heaven above. It keeps you always near me, It’s called the bridge of love. May you always walk in sunshine And God’s love around you flow. For the happiness you gave me, No one will ever know. It broke my heart to lose you, But you did not go alone, For part of me went with you. The day God called you home. A daily thought, a silent tear, A constant wish, That you were here. - Remembering you today and always from your loving husband Jimmy The day you left us mam, Our hearts just broke in two, The smallest part is still with us, The biggest part with you. For the rest of our lives, We will miss you mam, Our secret tears still flow, Oh, how we really loved you, No one will ever know. As we look upon your picture, Sweet memories we recall, Of a face so full of sunshine, And a smile for one and all. You were always there when we needed you, No task too great or small, With loving heart and willing hands, For us you did it all. Look around Your garden Lord, And when she turns and smiles, Put your arms around her, And hold her for a while. - Always in our thoughts and forever in our hearts; with love from your sons, Aidan and Keith, your daughter, Celine, daughters-in-law, Martina and Kathryn and son-in-law, Brendan

In loving memory of Paddy Dower, late of Lisduggan. 3rd anniversary occurs on Mon 2nd of December Mass will be held in St Pauls church at 6.30pm Saturday30th of November I’m Free Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free, I’m following the path God laid for me. I took his hand when I heard his call, I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day, To laugh, to love, to work, to play. Tasks left undone must stay that way, I’ve found that peace at the close of the day. If my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, As yes, these things I too will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow, I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life’s been full, I savoured much, Good friends, good times, A loved one’s touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me, God wanted me now, He set me free. - Loved and never forgotten by h is wife Marie, sons, daughters, sons-in law, daughters in-law, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail. A.P.
I was thinking today of what a wonderful world it would be, If everyone had the mother God gave me, I remembeer being with you on cold, rainy days, And you would be my friend, Because I couldn’t go out and play, You took the time with me and taught me, Things that only a mother can, Things that ony now I completely understand, A mothers love is the sweetest love on earth, And sometimes mother never knew, Just how much they’re worth, But you were a priceless gift to me, And I want you to know this day, That I had been given a treasure, I know God sent the best my way, You’ve been my dream friend, I’ll never forget the things you gave me, I love and thank God for you always.

Look around your garden Lord, John won’t be hard to find, For he had a heart so full of love, And a face that always smiles, Call his name out gently Lord, And when he looks your way, Please tell John that we love him, And miss him every day. - With love, Ray, Maria, Kirsty and Grace. From the depths of my heart, Come the words of a brother, Where our souls and our minds, Are like that of no other, The spirit of competition will always be there, In the look of our eyes and the glance of our stare, Protecting each other is always a must, Good times or bad times, never losing that trust, Like a vision of Indians, riding across desert sand, Or the heart of a raider when he conquers new land, We never lacked courage, or showed too much pride, With no thoughts of guilt or feelings put to the side, It’s important to strive forward, and not live through regret, But savour the memories and never forget, To be such close companions always made me so proud, Never scared to express feelings, our emotions speak loud, Wheather it’s heaven or on earth, our souls are always together, We share that sacred bond, knowing that brothers last forever. - Always loved Mark, Edel, Jessica, Holly and Millie. John since you passed away, Life just hasn’t neem the same, I would move heaven and Earth, To have you here again, The time we spent together, Meant the word to me, I have many treasured memories, As we grew up together happily, I’m so grateful for the years we had, And the closeness that we shared, Your thoughtfulness and loyalty, And the way you always cared, You were more than just my family, You were a kind and supportive friend. - Always in our thoughts, Lisa, John, Katie and Darragh. Novena to the Sacred Heart Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Take it Dear Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart, where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days. The good news is that all our bunkers are in play unless otherwise stated in local rules. Please keep an eye on the notice board for additional local rules and the number of holes being played in different competitions. Ladies Phil Kelly at the Helm: On Wednesday night last despite the horrendous weather conditions we had a very good attendance at our Annual General Meeting. Phil Kelly donned the 2020 Green Jacket and on behalf of all the ladies I would like to wish Phil the best of luck for her year as Lady Captain. Phil has been one of our most committed members for many years and I have no doubt she will make a great Lady Captain and will ensure that we are all out playing! Phil thanked all the members and commended Jean O Donovan on her very successful year. The only other change on the Committee was the appointment of Bridget Blackwell as Club Secretary. Bridget replaces Ciara Donnelly who has taken a well earned break from Committee duties. Winter League: The Winter League has got underway with the Singles competition. All matches must be played by December 15th. Members have been circulated with the teams and there are some very interesting combinations. Please consult the noticeboard. The competition will now run over 13 holes. This is a great opportunity to keep your golf game ticking over. Christmas Celebrations: On the 8th December Phil has organised a 9 Hole Ladies
Scramble. There will be a shotgun start at 1.00pm followed by some beverages, hot or cold and some Christmas Treats. Unfortunately Santa Claus is otherwise engaged, but there should be plenty of fun and banter. Everybody is welcome. Coastal Alliance: The Coastal Alliance competition certainly encounters bad weather and last Thursday event in the Gold Coast had to be deferred to the New Year. We are hopeful that the December event will take place on December 5th in West Waterford. On-Going Competitions: At the moment there are 2 competitions running – the 13 Hole and 9 Hole competitions
New Ross The course, like the rest of Ireland, has taken a battering from all the recent rainfall which has seen some other courses closing in recent days. However it is still in remarkable order. Members can play a part in this continuing by heeding club decisions about buggies and also taking care with trolleys an as always repairing pitch marks and divots etc. Please make sure to check the rules of the day when playing in competitions so as to avoid any confusion on the course. The Annual General Meeting of New Ross Golf Club will take place in the Clubhouse on Friday 6th December 2019 at 7.30 pm. All members are invited to attend. A good number of over 100 golfers took part in round 2 of the winter league with strong scoring again. The results were: 1st Richie Aylward (20) 33pts 2nd Mick Kavanagh (17) 32pts (last 9) 3rd Mick Butler (10) 32 pts Gross Derek Ronan 29pts Cat1 Tom Healy (6) 29pts Cat2 Seamus Power (15) 31pts Cat 3 Johnny Kinsella (18) 31pts. Young Blues too hot Double win
Waterford Youths easily accounted for Kilkenny in the FAI Youth Cup at Ozier Park on Sunday afternoon last. Callum Stringer was the two goal hero for the young Blues as he hit two terrific goals to seal a comfortable win for Anthony Browne’s side. Blues striker Jamie Brazil set up the first chance Salim Ahmed on six minutes, but his shot was saved by Kilkenny keeper Vinny O’Grady. Minutes later Brazil whipped drove in a left-wing corner kick but Joe Hawkes headed over the bar. The young Blues continued to create the chances with Jack Brennan joining close on eight minutes, then captain John Fredrick Tamen got free at the far post but he headed a Jamie Brazil cross narrowly wide. It was Brazil that broke the deadlock on 27 minutes, Callum Stringer found winger Ben Grace and he played a clever ball into Brazil who beat keeper O’Grady with a neat right-footed finish from 16 yards. Salim Ahmed should have doubled the Waterford lead three minutes later when he got on the end of a Ravelli Kilonda cross from the right, but he couldn’t direct his close-range effort on target. Kilonda then forced the Kilkenny keeper into a good save seconds later with a pow-

The Blues scored a second goal on 39 minutes, Jamie Brazil did well on the left-side of the area to play the ball into the feet of Ben Grace and he outpaced the Kilkenny defence before firing past Vinny O’Grady from inside the area. Waterford keeper Gavin Buckley was called into action just before half time as he had to make a top save, Kilkenny striker Cian Franey tried his luck with a cracking shot from distance, but his shot was superbly tipped past the post by
Buckley. The home team continued to dominate the tie in the second period with Jamie Brazil bringing the best out of keeper O’Grady on 49 minutes when his stunning effort on the run was tipped around the posts before Ravelli Kilonda should have done better with a chance soon afterwards as he blazed over from a good position. Brazil was denied his second goal of the game when he struck the far post with a stunning effort from the left-side of the penalty area on 68 minutes. Then Callum Stringer
stretched his sides advantage with a goal of quality three minutes later when he burst into the area before firing past Vinny O’Grady from 12 yards. Blues striker Kealon Graham brought a fine save out of the Kilkenny keeper soon afterwards when he looked certain to score. Callum Stringer grabbed his second goal and Waterford’s fourth in the closing minutes when he took a pass from Jamie Brazil just inside the area and beat O’Grady with a powerful right foot finish.
A step too far for Ballygunner

GAA
Despite a final push from Ballygunner, who saw their crown slipping away, some magnificent defending by the McCormacks and Maher held the citadel together and Borris-Ileigh were champions. Huge disappointment for Ballygunner but they could never put “clear water” between the teams and in the end 1-2 in the final thirty plus minutes was never going to be enough. BALLYSAGGART JUST FAIL Waterford Intermediate champions, Ballysaggart, suffered defeat in the Munster final as they went down (215/0-17) to Cork champions Fr O’Neills. Indeed this is three in a row for the representatives of the rebel county as both Charleville and Kanturk were successful in 2018 and 2017 respectively. It has been an outstanding year for Ballysaggart. Achieving senior status for 2020 was the priority and winning a Munster title
would certainly have been the “icing on the cake”. Despite some terrific point scoring by Stephen and Shane Bennett and Christy Murphy it was the Cork side who led at the break (1-8/0-9). The goal midway through the half from Billy Dunne. Fr O’Neills had a second goal just after the restart from Declan Dalton and despite a huge effort the Waterford representatives just could not claw back the deficit. However Ballysaggart can be justifyably proud of their 2019 efforts and we look forward to seeing them in the senior championship in 2020. ST MARY’S THROUGH Against all the odds Waterford Junior Hurling champions St Mary’s have continued on their winning ways with a 1-13 to 0-14 victory over Carrick Davins. This result will see the deise club contest the final on December 8th in Mallow against Russel Rovers. The year is not finished yet lads.
WIT Wildcats Abby Flynn in possession against Marble City Hawks. Photo: Noel Browne Waterford Wildcats recorded two vital wins over their Kilkenny neighbours over the past weekend when their U/18 team proved too good for Kilkenny Stars in the U/18 National Cup quarter final in the Watershed arena Kilkenny on Friday night. Then on Saturday night in front of a packed Mercy Sports Hall Wildcats Super League team came out best winning by 73
points to 43 over Marble City Hawks. These past two weeks have been exciting for all involved in Wildcats as they had similar success the previous week when they beat Glanmire of Cork to progress to the U/20 National Cup semi final and the Super League team recorded a massive away win over reigning champions Liffey Celtics.
Vikings self-destruct against Tolka Rovers
WIT Vikings started this game against Tolka Rovers on fire with some excellent team basketball allowing them to score at will, Grassey, O’Neill, Jay Kavanagh and Sheehan all getting on the score sheet. The ball and player movement were excellent and aside from some poor defensive lapses it was almost the perfect quarter of basketball, Vikings leading at the end 34 to 26. Both teams tightened their defence in the second period resulting in a drop in the scoring rate. Starters Sheehan and O’Neill both picked up their third fouls before half time curtailing their playing time. In what was anything but a dirty game from either team the total foul count was 46 making it the highest total of any of the Vikings this season. Jay Kavanagh added 9 points coming up to half time ensuring that WIT Vikings extended their lead slightly 52 to 42. Knowing how to take back control of a game that is running away from you is something this WIT Vikings team
still has to come to terms with, as Tolka mounted their comeback they seemed to press the self-destruct button. The team play that was so good at the start of the game disappeared and they paid the price. By the end of the period Tolka had cut the lead to a single point 61 to 60. The fourth quarter followed the same pattern. The Viking players trying continuously to force the game instead of letting it come to them The harder they tried the worse it got. It was nothing spectacular from Tolka just good solid team basketball while the Vikings continued to try and force it on the offensive end. Other than a short period with about three minutes to go when Vikings pulled the lead back to seven, Tolka kept control and ran out winners 95 to 84. The big difficulty for WIT Vikings this season is the amount of points they are giving up. They have to improve on the defensive end to have any chance of putting a few wins together.
