IRISH soccer has been awash with rumours that former FAI boss John Delaney is planning to lead a takeover bid for Waterford FC. But the club’s owner, Lee Power, says he is unaware of any such attempt. He told The Irish Times there has been no approach from Delaney, who has longstanding connections with the club and is believed to have

advised on the purchase of the Blues by Power, owner of the English side Swindon Town. Power’s commitment to the Blues has been the subject of speculation since they missed out on a place in the Europa League this season over a licensing issue. +DYLQJ ¿QLVKHG IRXUWK ODVW season, Alan Reynolds’s side slipped over the course of this

Kelly wants an end to turning back clock IN the week the clocks went back, a local MEP has urged the Government to reconsider scrapping the bi-annual time change. Seán Kelly is Ireland’s only member of the European

parliament’s working group on the clock change, and has been campaigning for the best part of a decade to scrap Daylight Savings Time. Speaking from Strasbourg, he said the need to keep step with

the rest of Europe out-weighed the risk of having two time zones on the island of Ireland. “The EU-wide public consultation on daylight savings time, which was carried out last year, received 4.6 million responses – the highest ever engagement for an EU public consultation,” he said. “EU citizens overwhelmingly supported the abolishment of the biannual clock change, with 84 percent of respondents voting in favour of ending this outdated practice. “Studies have shown that the disruption caused by the clock change has a detrimental impact on our health. It can lead to weakened immunity and sleeping patterns and in some cases, increased anxiety and depression. It can also impact on tiredness in drivers. “Amid the uncertainty of Brexit, it made sense to delay the issue, as there was a risk of having two time zones on the island of Ireland. However we DUH QRZ ¿QDOO\ VWDUWLQJ WR VHH progress on a Brexit deal, and as the rest of Europe moves to end daylight savings time, it makes sense that we would follow suit.”

THE HOOLIGAN FACTORY THIS British movie sees a football hooligan get out of prison and the only thing on his mind is the fact that he wants revenge on the man that he holds responsible for the death of his young son. It might sound a very heavy premise for D FRPHG\ EXW WKLV LV ¿UVW DQG IRUHPRVW just that, a comedy. “absolutely delightedâ€? to be on the ticket. “For the past 10 and a half years I have served the people of Waterford as a local representative and I have had the privilege of being elected mayor on two occasions,â€? he said. “However it has always been my aspiration to represent the people of Waterford at a national level in DĂĄil Éireann and it’s an honour to get the opportunity to stand as a candidate.â€? Green MEP Grace O’Sullivan said she would be putting her full weight behind the party’s candidate. “Many people, both nationally and locally, would have liked to see me run,â€? she said. “However, I’ve always felt that the European Parliament is far too important to be considered a waiting room for national politicians.â€?

Autumn Visitors

ninenottomiss BOOK of the week

THE LONG TAKE

by Robin Robertson

Snow Bunting at Kilcoole a visitor from Greenland (Photo Justin Ivory) AUTUMN is the season that every birder and twitcher loves best. Why? It is the time of year that rare and scarce birds are most likely to turn up in Ireland. Again – why? Well given that this is the reverse of the spring migration, the numbers of birds on the move have been swelled by the offspring that have been born during the summer and have successfully fledged and survived. So why do they end up here in Ireland? Young birds making their first migration can wander off course either due to inexperience or just some youthful exploring. Birds form North America making their migration southwards can get blown off course by bad weather systems which if blowing in a westerly direction, is easier for a bird to fly with rather than against until it makes landfall again – Western Europe. Ireland at the westernmost edge of Europe often receives its fair share of these yankee visitors. Whether these vagrants from America make it here can depend on several factors such as body size and shape, speed of the weather system and the fat reserves an individual bird has. If these birds successfully make landfall in Ireland, they will rest and feed up for a while before heading back on their migration. But what about birds from Eastern Europe and Siberia that should be migrating south-east towards China? Yes, weather or inexperience can push them off course towards the west, but these birds are flying over land. They could simply rest up somewhere for the weather conditions to improve before heading back on their migration south-east again. Studies would indicate that these visitors from Siberia most likely have a defective internal compass which compels them to perform reverse-migration – instead of flying south-east they fly north-west! The last few weeks has thrown up lots of rare and wonderful birds around the country which I will give a round-up of next week.

TV SHOW of the week

THE MYSTERY OF AGATHA CHRISTIE Virgin Media 3, Fri Nov 1st @ 6pm

Walker is a D-Day veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder; he can’t return home to rural Nova Scotia, and looks instead to the city for freedom, anonymity and repair. As he moves from New York to Los Angeles and San Francisco we witness a crucial period of fracture in American history. The Dream had gone sour. While Walker tries to piece his life together, America is beginning to come apart: deeply paranoid, riven by social and racial division. The Long Take is about a good man, brutalised by war, haunted by violence and apparently doomed to return to it - yet resolved to find kindness again.

David Suchet presents The Mystery of Agatha Christie. Episode 1: The Poirot star explores the life and work of the crime writer, finding out what gives her stories such worldwide appeal and why her characters capture the imagination of fans. The actor visits her former home in Devon in search of clues about what inspired one of Britain’s best-loved authors, and travels to Istanbul, Turkey, where Christie wrote one of her most famous novels, Murder on the Orient Express.

OVER THE RAINBOW – The Judy Garland Story. Sunday 10th November @3 pm. Theatre Royal Waterford.

YOGASONICS Monday 4th 6:30-8pm & Tuesday 5th 10:3012pm www.breathewiththebeat.com

DIRTY DUSTING Theatre Royal, Thursday November 7th @ 8pm Price: â‚Ź21.00 / â‚Ź19.00 conc.

From the moment, two and a half-year-old Frances Gumm emerged from a hat box on stage and did a sensational impersonation of Al Jolson, the world was captivated. Her name was changed from Frances Gumm to Judy Garland and when MGM cast her as Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz she became known and loved all around the world. Spellbound audiences watched as child-star Judy grew up on screen and by 1955, was the highest paid entertainer in the world. The song lyrics will be projected too so the audience can sing along!

Senior YA Yoga Teacher Karla Kelly from House of Yoga has developed a great course called Yogasonics. Using the tool of breathing with the beat, with many years of teaching at festivals co-ordinating the breath of 100s of people in the classes, she’s refined and ‘upgraded’ her work into this 7 week course called Yogasonics. Classes have a deeply philosophical slant to them and conscious, constant breathing with rhythm is the backbone of each class. Explore how we are ‘instruments’ in the orchestra of life!

Arriving with a bang this wild new comedy about a trio of 70-something cleaners face the axe... instead of taking threats of redundancy lying down, these game girls set up a phone sex service and that’s when the fun begins! These three girls will have you rolling in the aisles as they turn into ‘telephone belles’ - their bosses don’t know about it, their families would never guess and their very willing customers are none the wiser! A hilarious night starring X Factor’s Mary Byrne, Linda Mc Carthy, Nicole Banim Butler and David Delaney.

NOMINATED for three Irish Times Theatre Awards – Best New Play, Best Set Design and Best Sound Design, Shackleton comes to Garter Lane for two nights, this November 1 and 2. Telling the story of Irish explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton’s failed voyage to cross the Antarctic continent in 1914, Shackleton is a visually spectacular re-telling of perhaps the greatest survival story ever, earning standing ovations wherever it has sailed. Eventually, the crew of the Endurance were forced to abandon ship before it was crushed by sea ice and sank, leaving the 28 men drifting helplessly with just their three lifeboats to get home. The crew spent the next number of months on makeshift camps on the ice, where they continued to drift northwards. In loving memory of Rita Troy, late of Ferndale, whose birthday occurs on November 6th. Mass for the Holy Souls, Sacred Heart Church, 7pm In Loving Memory of my wonderful wife, We knew that morning, That God would call your name. In life we loved you dearly, In death we do the same. It broke my heart to lose you, But you did not go alone, For part of me went with you The day God called you home. You left me beautiful memories, Your love is still my guide, And though I cannot see you, You are always by my side. Our family chain is broken And nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one, The chain will link again. - Thinking of you today and always Your loving husband Jimmy A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands at rest, It broke our hearts to see you go, God only takes the best. Your life was love and labour, Your love for your family true, You did your best for all of us, We will always remember you. In tears we watched you sinking, We watched you fade away, And though our hearts were breaking, We knew you could not stay. Our lips cannot speak how we loved you, Our hearts cannot tell what to say, But God only knows how we miss you, In our home that is lonely today. - Happy birthday mam,

7th Anniversary & Birthday Remembrance ANNE FARDEY

In memory of a much loved mother Anne Fardey (née Bowes), late of Belvedere Ave. whose 80th birthday occurs on the 1st of November and whose 7th anniversary occurs on the 3rd November. Masses offered. Time is too slow for those who wait, Too swift for those who fear, Too long for those who grieve, Too short for those who rejoice, But for those who love, Time is eternity. - Always loved, Annemarie, Niamh, John and families NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours, this time I ask for this one special favour (mention favour). Take it Dear Jesus and place it within Your own broken heart, where Your Father sees it. Then in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour and not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days. I cannot send a birthday card, Or even hold your hand, But one look up to heaven, And I know you’ll understand. And now it’s your birthday, It’s up to God above, To give you all my wishes, But most of all my love. Happy were the precious years, When we were all together, Lovely are the memories, They will live in my heart forever. - Happy Birthday mam, Love Keith, Kathryn, Aoife, Hannah, Sinéad and Cora We won’t forget the face we loved, Or the memories of your smile, Or the countless things you did for us, To make our lives worthwhile. You were always there with a helping hand, To listen, advise and understand. A special mother, so very rare, When we needed you, You were always there. You’re always close beside us, In everything we do, You were our greatest treasure, God’s gift to us, was you. - Happy Birthday mam, Love Aidan, Martina, James and Anthony Sister, I cried when it happened, And still do every day, My world was totally shattered, The day you went away, Little reminders lay around, The photographs remain, I talk about the old days, That bring you back again, I know that you’re with Jesus now, And happy in his care, If we coud just the once, Call and see you there, Just to wish you happy birthday, And I’d hug you for a while, Oh oh! The joys once again, To see your lovely smile. - Loved and never forgotten, Happy Birthday Rita, from your sisters Patty, Noeleen, Teresa and Ruth, and brothers John, Gerry, Tony, Thomas and Mike. O HOLY ST ANTHONY Gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for your neighbour, made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore of you to obtain for me my request....(Pause) The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so you are the saint of miracles. O gentle and loving St Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, intercede for me and whisper my prayer into the ear of the sweet Infant Jesus who loved to linger in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will be yours. A.C.

In loving memory Mixie Barry, late of Knockboy, Dunmore Road, Waterford whose 9th Anniversary occurs on 3rd November.

Fond memories of a loving mother and grandmother, Kathleen Walsh nee Connolly, late of 3 Rice Park, Waterford, who died October 26th 2009.

November comes with sad regret, The day the month I will never forget, A heart of gold, a precious love, The angels sang Amazing Grace, The Lord came down and touched your face, He held your hand and whispered low, “Come with me, it’s time to go” The gates of heaven opened wide, The angels lined up side by side, A special guest was on his way, The day they took you away, We shared some laughs, We shared some tears, But most of all we shared great years, An empty space no one can fill, I miss you Mixie and always will. -Remembered every day with love, Mary.

Quietly today your memory is kept, No need for words, We will never forget, When thoughts go back, As they often do, We will treasure the memories, We have of you. - Always in our thoughts, your daughter Marian, son in law Robbie, grandchildren Laura, Bobby, Marian, Owen and Evelyn, great grandchildren Holly, Kayla-Lily, ShannonRose, John , Jaida, Alex and Aubrey.

You gave me everything you had, Your time your love and care, You never asked for anything, And you were always there, Your needs were simple, Your wants were few, If your family were happy, So were you, A heart of gold a life so true, Loved and respected by all you knew. -I miss you Dad. Love Joe. No special day is needed, For us to think of you, For you were someone special, And we thought the world of you. -Still loved and missed by your daughter Adrianne and son in law Brian. Remember him with a smile today, He was not one for tears, Reflect instead on memories, Of all the happy years, Recall to mind the way he spoke, And all the things he did, His strength, his stance, The way he talked, Remember those instead. -Missed always by your daughter Gillian and son in law Liam. When one door closes another one opens, But we so often look so long, And so regretfully upon the closed door, That we do not see the ones, Which opened for us. -Miss you Grandad, Love Ryan. Sweet is your memory, Dear is your name, Deep in our hearts, You will alway remain, It does not take a special day, For me to think of you, Still loved, Still missed, Still very dear. -Love Kathleen, Leon, Aishling, Reiltin and Donnacha.

16th Anniversary JAMES MORRISSEY

In Loving Memory

30th birthday Remembrance & 3rd Anniversary e GARY POWER

Unseen and unheard but always near, So loved, so missed, so very dear 20TH ANNIVERSARY GAVIN CONNOLLY

In loving memory of James Morrissey late of 81 Central Ave, Lisdugganwho died on 4th of November 2003. A beautiful star shines on your grave, For a Dad I loved and could not save, Your memories are treasures no one can steal, I speak your name with love and pride, I smile through tears I cannot hide, Death does not part us nor distance divide, Each day of my life Daddy you walk by my side, I think of the times, the laughs we shared, You are not just a memory or part of the past, You are my dad to remember as long as life lasts, A prayer each night to keep in touch, With a dad I loved and miss so much - Always remembered, never forgotten, loving you always, your loving daughter Ann and son-in-law Gerry I once had someone special, That money could not buy, I had a special grandad but I had to say good bye. If I I were asked one question, Why I thought the world of you. I could give a million answers and they all would be true. I have photos of you to treasure, That’s all i have to touch, Of a special grandad, I loved and miss so much, We feel you all around us, You are always on my mind, And when we talk about you, We remember happy times, It broke our hearts to lose you, Your parting caused great pain, I will never forget you Grandad, In a world that is never the same - Always loved and missed by your loving granddaughter Louise, and Keith and great grandchildren Adam and Shane Grandad, You gave us everything you had, Your time, your love & care, You never asked for anything And you were always there, Your life you lived unselfishly, With you’re gentle loving ways, No verse can say, No flowers repay, The wonderful grandad We lost that day. - Loved always, from your grandson Ian A gift in life so precious and rare, Is the love that a Grand- daughter, And grandad can share, We shared that love Grandad you and I, From the day I was born, Till the day that you died, The hardest thing in life to bear, Is to want your grandad, And he’s not there, So forgive me Lord if today I weep, Fro the grandad I loved, And wanted to keep, I was proud you were my grandad, Thanks for all you’ve done, I pray that God has given you, the crown you’ve truely won. -Sadly missed by your loving granddaughter Emma
