Spring into the Garden!
Y
our garden will probably be starting to show signs of life after the winter storms and the many types of weather we get hit with in March. Now is the time to get out there and get your hands dirty! A gardener will work smarter not harder - when they have the right tools, but also by having those tools in tip top condition. Clean any dust or dirt that may have accumulated from your tools with soapy water and dry well. It’s a good idea to do this when you’re putting your tools away in autumn but it doesn’t hurt to give them some tlc in spring time too. Start by clearing debris from garden beds and corners and tidy up any broken branches or battered shrubs. By clearing these out of the way you’ll be making space for VSULQJ ÀRZHULQJ EXOEV WR JURZ unencumbered and put on their best display. <RX FDQ DOVR GR DQ\ ¿QDO pruning to trees to make the most of the light that gets into your garden. There’s a good chance your soil will need some help to prepare it for any new planting ideas you may have. Clear any weeds, give it a good rake and even turn it over with a fork if it needs it. Add fresh compost or manure to give your soil a nutrient boost and make it ready to receive any new plantings in a couple of weeks time. Make a plan as to what you’ll keep, what you’ll get rid of,
It’s time to turn over a new leaf
what you’ll move and what you’ll add when it comes to your garden. as to whether or not to move a plant or shrub, especially if it’s one that you’re fond of. IF you’ve got grass, spring is an important time to turn your attention to your turf. Clear the lawn of winter debris and look for areas that need reseeding before mowing. You can start a compost pile, at any time of year but spring is a great time for new beginnings of all sorts so if you haven’t begun one already, start now. Begin by collecting plant debris and leaves raked up from the garden. Find equal amounts “brown (carbon-rich) materials like dried leaves and straw and

THE BLESSING OF THE GRAVES
A
pattern in Irish Roman Catholicism refers to the devotions that take place within a parish on the feast day of the patron saint of the parish, on that date, or the nearest Sunday, called Pattern Sunday. The name pattern is a corruption of patron, as in “patron saint”. In the earlier days of the Church, festivities began with religious devotions at the church, but this came to DQ HQG ZLWK WKH FRQ¿VFDWLRQ and/or destruction of Roman Catholic churches between the 1540s and the 1690s, during the Reformation. By 1700, the devastation was such that very few, if any, churches in Ireland remained under Catholic control and public religious ceremonies almost disappeared. With the passage of the Penal Laws, the institutional church was an outlawed religious society; its churches few, its clergy scarce. With the central location of
The name pattern is a corruption of patron their devotions gone, people found alternative ways to honour their saint’s feast day. While many of the faithful paid homage at the saint’s shrine or in the ruins of their local church, most devotions took place at a nearby holy well, celebrated for
its curative power. The earliest reference to the Pattern in Ardmore can be found in the calendar of State Papers of June 12, 1611, which mention “a grant of a fair to be held at Ardmore Co. Waterford, on St Declan’s Eve or Day.
Before 1800 St. Declan’s Stone and the Oratory containing his skull formed the centre of the festivities on St. Declan’s Day. Other places noted for large attendance include St. Patrick’s Purgatory and Croagh Patrick. Priests would often assign
making a pattern at a local well as a penance for sins; pilgrimages to such sites as Croagh Patrick also had a penitential purpose. The largest patterns would attract thousands of people. Although held in rural areas, the patterns attracted
crowds from nearby towns. People would “pay rounds” by circumambulating a Holy Well a prescribed number of times in a clockwise or sunwise direction, reciting a rosary during each round, replicating an ancient Celtic rite known as the deiseal. At some sites participants would proceed to various “stations”, such as a small oratory, the saint’s grave, or a Celtic cross in a predetermined and customary order. Having completed the religious devotion participants would also engage in activities such as gaming, singing, dancing, and horse racing. Some patterns lasted for several days.

White rumped Wanderer
Male Wheatear (Photo Justin Ivory) IT’S March and the annual spring migration is well under way with the first of the migrants starting to turn up on our shores including Northern Wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe). The entire world population of these smart looking, Robin sized birds, winters in subSaharan Africa in a strip from Senegal to Somalia. In early spring the entire population moves to the northern hemisphere including Ireland. Males are usually first to arrive, closely followed by the females. I was lucky enough to come across two very handsome males hanging about the rocks in Greystones last week, gorging themselves on flies that the mild weather had brought out. These birds will quickly move inland to setup breeding territories. Many Northern Wheatears go to Iceland and Greenland to breed. Since spring arrives later at those more northerly locations, these birds leave the wintering grounds later and can be seen passing through Ireland in April. By that stage most of ‘our’ summer resident Wheatears have arrived and moved inland. These later birds are a subspecies often referred to as Greenland Wheatear. When Wheatears fly they have a very distinctive white rump and black T-shaped tail band. The name Wheatear derives from Norse/Anglo-Saxon which means ‘white arse’! Can be found in a variety of habitats including mountains, upland bogs, pastures with short vegetation and rocks, scree or stone walls and along rocky coasts. They like to build their nests down Rabbit burrows, in holes between rocks and have a particular penchant for old drystone walls, which makes Wheatears particularly widespread in the west of Ireland. Wheatears lay clutches of 5-6 pale blue eggs and can have up to two broods in a season. Keep your eyes open for these lovely visitors along our coastlines in the coming weeks and then inland over the summer.

ANN DEVINE READY FOR HER CLOSE-UP by Colm O’Regan
CHOOSING DEATH RTE 2, Wednesday 3rd April 9.35pm
US General Release: 22 March 2019
Meet Ann Devine, a riddle, wrapped up in a fleece, inside a Skoda Octavia. Now that her youngest has flown the nest, Ann finds herself at a loose end. Until, that is, she is put forward for the Kilsudgeon Tidy Towns Committee. Yet all is not neat and tidy in Kilsudgeon. There are strange sightings of people who aren’t local driving 4x4s with a yellow reg, a man bun requesting kefir in the restaurant and a quad bike at a funeral. What does this have to do with rumours of a brand new television series to rival Game of Thrones? And what will it all mean for Kilsudgeon’s newly proposed town park? A lot, as it happens.
Louis Theroux continues his Altered State with the second in his series of documentaries with Choosing Death. The documentary-maker visits California, one of six states in the US where the terminally ill have the right to end their own lives. He investigates the moral and legal issues surrounding this situation, meeting people who have made the choice to die, but now need to decide when, as well as a group that helps people who do not fit the legal criteria.
Accompanied by her husband, son and daughter, Adelaide Wilson returns to the beachfront home where she grew up as a child. After spending a tense beach day with their friends, the Tylers (Emmy winner Elisabeth Moss, Tim Heidecker, Cali Sheldon, Noelle Sheldon), Adelaide and her family return to their vacation home. When darkness falls, the Wilsons discover the silhouette of four figures holding hands as they stand in the driveway. Us pits an endearing American family against a terrifying and uncanny opponent: doppelgängers of themselves.

Kalen, an Irish-American playwright, examines the relationship to his long-dead immigrant grandmother, Ellen. In creating her character, he engages in a dialogue which results in both deeply personal revelations and a serious examination of their shared 20th (“American) century. Through Ellen’s life, she experienced two World Wars, the Spanish Flu, the American Depression, the advent of labour unions and a strong socialist agenda setting the stage for a virtually uninterrupted rise of American industry and world leadership for the first three quarters of the 20th Century.
