Pesticide in water sparks warning ,5,6+ :DWHU KDV DSSHDOHG WR farmers to follow the guidelines when applying pesticides to their lands after excessive pesticide levels were detected in drinking water sources in Co Wexford. The pesticide Bentazone was found in the Clonroche supply in March, April and November. Clopyralid and Fluroxypyr were noted in the South Regional supply in May and September. There was no threat to public health but Irish Water says it is imperative that users of pesticides are mindful of best practice when spraying their land. Farmers should read and follow the product label and determine the right amount to purchase and use. They shouldn’t spray if rain or strong wind is forecast and should be aware of the location of all nearby water courses. 7KH\ VKRXOG HYHU ¿OO D VSUD\HU directly from a water course or carry out mixing, loading or other handling operations beside a water course.

Our county is missing out on the jobs boom THE South East is missing out on the employment boom. Only a handful of new jobs have been created here in the past year, and unemployment, which has fallen everywhere else, has risen slightly. Figures released by the Central 6WDWLVWLFV 2ŕľśFH VKRZ WKDW fewer than one in every 100 jobs created in Ireland last year was in the South East. Overall, a total of 66,700 jobs was created nationally in the 12 months to the end of September. But only 600 jobs were created in Wexford, Carlow, Kilkenny, Waterford, and Tipperary. Dublin accounted for nearly half of the total employment gains. Dublin and the Mid East commuter belt counties around the capital swallowed up more than 60pc of the new jobs. While the country is

continuing to edge towards full HPSOR\PHQW WKH ÂżJXUHV UHYHDO a major urban-rural divide is developing. $Q DQDO\VLV RI WKH ODWHVW ÂżJXUHV suggests the recovery is heavily weighed towards the capital, which also takes 61pc of new tech jobs. 0HDQZKLOH ÂżJXUHV IURP WKH Labour Force Survey show the unemployment rate in the South East was 8.6% at the end of the third quarter – 2.6% above the national average and up from 8.2% in the same period last year. The Government last week unveiled details of its ‘Future Jobs’ programme, which will replace the ‘Action Plan for Jobs’ set up during the recession. It also launched a â‚Ź1bn fund for investment in rural towns and villages with a population

under 10,000 over the next 10 years. Taoiseach Leo Varadkar acknowledged the widening regional imbalance. “History is littered with examples of regions that thrived economically at one time or another, but were complacent, assumed their competitive advantage would last forever, and fell into decline,â€? he said. But Fianna FĂĄil’s business spokesperson Billy Kelleher warned against a “two-tier recoveryâ€?. “Alarmingly, Dublin accounted for nearly half of total employment gains and the Greater Dublin Area accounted for over 60pc,â€? he said. “This is clear, unambiguous evidence that the twotier recovery is still being experienced by regional and rural Ireland.â€?

Lucky to avoid Euro death group

T

he recent Euro 2020 draw saw the Republic of Ireland eventually land in a favourable group after a momentary scare. Initially we looked like we were being put into the ‘group of death’ with Germany and Holland but the draw rule that no more than two of the 12 host nations could be in the same pot saved us and we landed in the next group, alongside Switzerland, Denmark, Georgia and Gibraltar (and consigned Northern Ireland to the ‘group of death’). That’s not to say that our group will be easy. Switzerland are number eight in the FIFA Rankings, and Denmark are also in the top 10. While we have reason to groan at facing Denmark again, after playing them so often recently, the plus side is that we know what we have to do to stop them playing and get something from those games. Second place in the group is achievable. No disrespect to Gibraltar but that

Oyster Lane Theather Group’s Maria Gore, Elaine Murphy, Natalie Casey-Hynes, Lorraine Busher and Carmel Monahan at theTalbot Hotel Christmas Party nights should be six points in the bank without breaking a sweat. Georgia might see us have to break a sweat but again anything less than another six

points would see us undeserving RI D TXDOLÂżFDWLRQ SODFH We will need to punch above our weight and play our hearts out against Switzerland and

Denmark. Mick McCarthy is the man to get the players up for these type of games. He’ll have their heads right for the occasion and will ensure they

leave nothing on the pitch. The Danes and the Swiss will know they have been in a game after these occasions. We were always going to be

the third-best team in our group and were always going to be up against it. This isn’t McCarthy’s fault – it’s the legacy himself and Terry Connor have been left with courtesy of the decay and decline under Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane. The games will come thick and fast between March and November next year and there will be no time for experimentation. Mick and Terry will need to look at the players and potential players (both in England and domestically) and decide who they are going with and what kind of system they will play. Then they need to trust their judgement and hope for the best. There remains the potential safety net of a Nations League SOD\ R྾ EXW WKLV LVQœW JXDUDQWHHG and given how poorly we did in that competition it would be a bit of mockery of the system LI ZH XOWLPDWHO\ TXDOL¿HG WKDW way. Dealers hoping to roar back as sales fall 4.35%

Tom and Conall Power, and John Kehoe at the Cooney-Furlong Machinery Company Old Dublin Road Enniscorthy Open Evening. Below, Owen Lacey CAR dealers are hoping for a January strong as new car sales fell 4.35% so far this year, with 124,809 registrations up to the end of October. New registrations fell 11.2 % in October, with just 1,725 new cars registered compared to 1,943 last year. The last three months of the year are traditionally poor for new car sales as buyers wait to register their new purchases in the new year. Brian Cooke, director general designate of the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI), said: “It comes as no surprise that new car registrations are down again this month, in line with the trend in the market so far this year. While the domestic economic backdrop continues to be positive, as evidenced by the increase in commercial vehicle registrations this year, the impact of Brexit and the associated weakness of sterling has seen an increase in the volume of used imports, which has been to the detriment of the new car market.” Volkswagen is the best selling brand on the new car market this year, with 13,682 registrations, giving it a 10.9 % share of the market, ahead of Toyota with 11,978 registrations. Hyundai had 11,556, Ford had 11,230 and Nissan had 9,708. At the premium end Audi is in the lead with 4,909, followed by BMW with 4,204 and Mercedes Benz with 4,124. 2WKHU QRWDEOH VDOHV ¿JXUHV are 116 new car registrations for Tesla so far this year, up from 47 last year, while Bentley recorded six sales in the

Republic, compared to none last year. Tesla’s sales are comprised of 82 Model S saloons and 34 Model X crossovers. The best-selling models this year are the Nissan Qashqai, Hyundai Tucson and Ford Focus. Despite the strong campaigns against diesel, it still represents 54.45 % of new car sales in the Republic, although the number of diesels registered is down 20 % on last year. Sales of petrolelectric hybrids (including plugins) were 7,604, up nearly 60 % on last year, while fully electric new cars recorded sales of 1,211, nearly double what they were last year. There has been a further 600 fully electric used cars imported this year.

Used imports came to 86,418 up to the end of October, the majority aged between two and ¿YH \HDUV The favoured brands to import are VW, Ford and Audi, with the VW Golf the most popular used import model at 4,926, followed by the Ford Focus with 4,711 and the BMW 5 Series with 2,852. Diesel made up 75.4 % of the imports, while there were 1,004 hybrids re-registered here. In the commercial vehicle market, sales are up for both light commercials and heavy goods vehicles. Light commercial sales are up 5.9 % this year to 24,779, while heavy goods vehicle sales are up 4.8 % to 2,460.

22 | WILDLIFE with Justin Ivory

Feed the Birds, Tuppence a Bag

Blue Tit on Peanut Feeder (Photo Justin Ivory) WELL allowing for inflation since the time of Mary Poppins it’s a bit more than tuppence a bag now but is still money well spent. And with the annual BirdWatch Ireland Garden Bird Survey (GBS) starting in December and running though to the end of February it is time to stock up on the bird food, fill those feeders, grab you binoculars, bird id book and the kids (if you have any, if not please don’t grab anybody else’s kids...you can do this without kids), and starting counting the birds coming into your garden remembering to record it all your survey form. The survey has been running for 30 years and provides invaluable data on the trends of our garden birds and how their populations are faring. With loss of natural habitats, changes in farming practice, effects of climate change and increasing pressure from numerous human activities, gardens and the food we provide for birds (and other wildlife) in them are becoming increasingly important. The results of the survey are also an indicator of how our wider environment is faring as well. So how does the survey work? Well from the 3rd of December until the end of February you need to keep note of the highest number of each bird species visiting your garden each week. Just to clarify that means the highest number of that species seen simultaneously in your garden at the one time. It is not an accumulation over the course of a day or a week. The survey also looks for basic information about your garden type and the sorts of food you leave out for the birds. Survey forms can either be completed online or downloaded from the BirdWatch Ireland website at www.birdwatchireland.ie So go on be a citizen scientist this winter and I guarantee you will have loads of fun and entertainment at the same time!
